In a fantasy world where martial artists can split mountains and creeks with a wave of their hand and break rivers with a kick, there exists a little restaurant like this.

The restaurant isn’t large, but it is a place where countless apex existences will rush into.

There, you can taste egg-fried rice made from phoenix eggs and dragon blood rice.

There, you can drink strong wine brewed from vermillion fruit and water from the fountain of life.

There, you can taste the barbecued meat of a ninth grade supreme beast sprinkled with black pepper.

What? You want to abduct the chef? That’s not going to happen, because there’s a divine beast of unfathomable level, the Hellhound, lying at the entrance.

Oh, that chef also has a robotic assistant that killed a ninth grade supreme being with a single hand and a group of crazy women whose stomachs were conquered.

I personally find this a bit better than the gourmet food supplier, but only because there are actually people that don't fall in love with his cooking (a few just because they antagonize, but a specific group actually didn't like most of his dishes, which is a nice twist on the usual "you fall in love with the food as soon as you even smell it from afar").

Still, it's very basic writing and storytelling and is just good for a bit of entertainment when you are bored, but it doesn't... more>> seem to try to be anything else, so it's not bad. <<less

Was this written by the same author as gourmet food supplier? Because so far its literally the same story just in a xianxia type world.

Of the two im more inclined towards gourmet food supplier. Its more relatable and less ridiculous

Gourmet of Another World is very similar to Gourmet Food Supplier, and if you enjoyed GFS, chances are that you'll enjoy this too.

I thoroughly enjoyed GFS when I read it a few years back and was having a great time enjoying Gourmet of Another World as well. There are many strong arguments as to why you might enjoy this. The descriptions of food are good enough and the way many dishes and characters are introduced make for a very entertaining read. It's also a good mix of cultivation and cooking/food... more>> genre.

But with that being said, the weaknesses are very apparent as well. The plot developments follow a very standard template. If you've read a few xianxia/wuxias, then you've come across pretty much everything that happens in this book. The characters also fall into the generic archetypes you can find littered across similar works, i.e. To say, there's not a single character that's a breath of fresh air, and coupled with the template arc/plot development, nothing really gives the world any weight.

Regardless of its flaws, Gourmet of Another World was is an entertaining read and I'd have rated it a 4 star if I had written this earlier.

Unfortunately, the development at chapter 245 and beyond really pushed my buttons and made me drop it instantly.

Spoiler

The MC goes on a trip to experience the food of the world. He's pulled into a brothel where he orders every dish because he needs to experience the food of that place.

He then takes a bite of every single dish and proceeds to critique it as if he's reviewing a dish presented by a contestant on master chef and he's the judge.

This has happened several times before but in other instances, they are somewhat palatable as he's accompanied by other frequently recurring characters and their reaction makes for a not so infuriating read. But in this instance, it's just pointless.

The critiques serves no purpose and just makes the MC unlikable. The brothel is just running a business and even if he was in that world's best restaurant, he'd still have critiques about the dishes. And the chefs there who had been cooking for over 9, 999 years would listen to his words and instantly admit that everything he said was right and that if they improved the way he recommended, their dish would go from 1 star to 5 stars.

[collapse]

On that note, I wish I'd have dropped this a few chapters earlier as I'd have remembered Gourmet of Another World fondly. The chapters I discussed about in the spoiler really makes me want to rate this as a 1 star but that would be unfair.

Overall, Gourmet of Another World is an entertaining enough read that will certainly scratch your cooking/food related itch. If you're looking for cultivation stuff to be mixed into it, then this might just be the read for you.

It's well translated and there are very few mistakes that have gotten through the proofreading. As long as you can turn off your brain and look over some tropes, it's a fun read. <<less

It was an okay read, not the greatest nor the worst novel.

The start of the novel was good (1/4 of the story). The author introduced some interesting ideas on how to weaponize cooking and some funny characters like the metal puppet guarding the restaurant, who strips troublemakers as an example for others (clothes-stripping crazy daemon). And as you can guess, in CN novels, when you strip someone, they often come back with someone stronger for revenge, creating trouble for our MC. All he wants is to polish his cooking skills,... more>> generate revenue to further his cultivation, or just relax and laze around. And let me tell you, troublemakers flock to his restaurant like moths to a flame.

The MC is a cold and aloof character, mainly expressionless. He is so expressionless that even other characters call him chef with a paralyzed face. If he doesn't need to, he never leaves the restaurant, only doing so when the system gives him a mission or when some guys try to wipe out his customer base. In most cases, the MC is not the strongest in his restaurant, so even if a heavenly emperor were to descend, the MC wouldn't give a sh*t or face. And of course, the MC doesn't engage in romance, nor do women flock to him.

The problem arises when the MC opens a new restaurant in a region where the cultivation standard is higher than the previous one, and nobody knows him. This leads to a repetitive plot cycle, which even I, as a face-slapping enthusiast, had to take a break from the novel and touch the grass (2/4 and 3/4 of the story).

Finally, I reached the 4/4 part of the story, which was, in my opinion, pretty good. The MC stopped spending most of his time in the restaurant waiting for enemies to come to him. And most importantly, the MC finally underwent some character development, although only a little. Many things got explained, such as the system, the Earth, his transmigration, the sole demons, and their weakness against chefs. Some interesting twists at the ending were like icing on the cake. I liked the ending, though.

Overall, it's a 3 out of 5 for me. Just your typical CN junk food. <<less

Everyone complains about the characters in the reviews, but at the very least it's somewhat bearable.

The main character is posed as a super laid back dude that doesn't worry about anything, because he has God itself in the form of a dog and a overpowered puppet. However, sometimes he just seems rather naive. As for the antagonists, they are just straight up s*upid. The main character's shop has literally killed Supreme beings and a Divine being, how have rumors of this not reached the entire continent by now? Why are... more>> people, not even that far away from the capital hes staying in, making enemies with him despite knowing how strong he is, it literally makes no sense. Why does no one in this novel have decent information-gathering abilities. Furthermore, one of the antagonists literally knew that another antagonist was going to die at that city, and for some reason she never told him? Despite the fact that they were inseparable. (From what little is written about them).

However, despite that length paragraph it isn't my main gripe with this novel. It's the ever-constant POV changes between various people who are going to piss of the main character in the future. I can pretty much guarantee that the majority of people reading will not care about how annoying antagonist #308 is marching towards x. Like sometimes it's close to four POV changes in a chapter, hello? It's also annoying how every single time he becomes enemies with these people, even though they have no real reason to be fighting.

Overall, decent idea for a novel, terribly executed. <<less

It was good the first 300 or so chapters... but like same things keeps on repeating themselves not to mention MC has absolutely no competition in terms of cooking. Making him the absolute perfect cook through the system. At that point why bother pogressing through the cultivation? like dude has no reason/need to have cultivation since he got system given "guards" to protect him and his store. (yes, you can argue he has to be this level to cook this thing... but like does he really? I feel like given... more>> how the store works and system works it won't be any issue for him to cook things that require cultivation ranks) I mean there's also his goal is to be the god of cooking blah blah blah... he got no competition so like what's the point? he can already be considered a god if the system wills it to be... I don't know what I am missing here. I feel like I can just skip 800 chapters and read through the novel and stil be fine b/c all it gonna happen is that he got to this new location he made his store well known and now he is preparing to move to a new location????

I mean if that sounds like a good read to you go for it... after reading 867 chapters of it I don't think I wanna read anymore of it. I might comeback and finish the novel someday just to get it out of my list but I don't expect anything from it anymore.

IT IS NOT ONE OF WORST NOVEL BUT IT'S NOT A FUN OR GOOD ONE EITHER... It might've been fun if it only had 200-300 chapters that's about it.

Edit: go read Black Tech Internet Cafe System it's similar to this but it's more fun imo. At least things don't feel as blend as this one. also, it's not as long as this one. <<less

Just finished it. I'm someone who has pretty low standards when it comes to novels that feature food of any kind at its center, so it's not that hard for these kinds of novels to satisfy me. Gourmet of Another World had an interesting and likeable supporting cast, the food bits are nice (food that helps with cultivation was expected, but food as weapons and food as arrays were pretty cool), and the power escalation (and I guess face slapping) was tolerable.

Unfortunately, what really brings down this novel is the... more>> protagonist, Bu Fang. He is, at best, one-dimensionally dull, and at worst, actively infuriating. I don't really mind cold and aloof protagonists, but just because they're cold and aloof doesn't make them automatically interesting or fun to read about.

What's even worse is that he actually does get some interesting character development at the tail end of the novel, but it really falls flat because again, 9/10ths of the novel was spent with Bu Fang being a block of wood (if I had a dollar every time his face gets described as indifferent I would be swimming in money right now). <<less

made me hungry. Decent food-focused cultivation story that sometimes bordered on being slice-of-life at times. There's not much focus on cultivating or practicing anything other than cooking since he levels up with the system and not through normal ways. This made my concept of the cultivation system a little fuzzy and vague.

The MC himself is the calm, indifferent type so the people who prefer hot-headed, impulsive, idiot MC who think with their c*otch probably wont like this; the MC is surrounded by beauties and doesn't lay a finger on them.

overall... more>> it was mostly entertaining but there were some repetitive parts that got stale after a while. A solid 3.5. <<less

    • This novel is not all bad due to the side characters. They are the ones who mostly have characters! They are the reason that I read!
    • But, the MC is just downright unlovable. The author might have opted for a cool MC but seriously, I can't count the times that I want to smack the MC and want him on the verge of death. Like the other reviewers said, most of the time, he is void of basic human emotion. He's shameless, to the point of being ungrateful! For example, there is this Nangong Wuque who he asked to take him to the Secret Realm, which, Nangong Wuque eventually did after MC forced him. But when they got there and got separated, never did the MC worry for his companion. And when he noticed that Nangong Wuque was held captive by an enemy, he just turned away. Not concerned. Even feeling disdain. He never did ever worried for anyone. MC is tr*sh. A simple word or explanation from him could have avoided any trouble but no, he chooses each time to be silent! Does being silent make you cool? Duh! I hate these kinds of MCs. He does take responsibility only if the issue is right on his face! But never, ever, did he even thought that his actions have consequences. He has too much faith with the system. He never tries to practice combat or whatnot. He relies too much with his cultivation level.
    • The story is okay. But the MC made it bad. Seriously!

A lot of effort has been made by the author to create a lot of funny situations and pretty interesting characters so it's not terrible but the MC completely shatters every hope this story has of being more than mediocre.

He is just too boring and detached from the rest of the world.
Cold and aloof characters are fine but the MC here lacks basic human emotions, he has no drive, no motivation, he doesn't really bond with anyone, he is constantly standing in the same spot and if it wasn't... more>> for the system literally forcing him to move forward he would just do nothing.

You could say he is a reactive character but that's not true, he doesn't react to anything because he doesn't care, the system does, he just obeys the system for some reason.

A good example would be the spring festival (happens around chapter 140), the MC goal is to collect crystals to improve his system and he does that by selling food.
The Spring Festival hosts a huge banquet and all the eyes of the empire are focused on it since it's a rare chance for commoners to eat stuff from top tier chefs, cooks from all over the empire go there to show their skills and get recognition.

He gets invited.

Even if the food in his restaurant is really expensive and only affourdable for rich people and cultivators going there would still be good publicity since he has mad skillz and it's not like ALL the rich people and cultivators in the empire regularly eat in his restaurant, but he refuses.

Why? He isn't interested.
After a while the system just issues a mission and he is "forced" to go.

Stuff like this makes for an uninteresting character and since he has a lot of screentime, an uninteresting story.

In a sense this is similar to "Black Tech Internet Cafe System", both share the same positive aspects of good worlbuilding and quirky characters and the same negatives such as a kinda boring MC but while Fang Qi was robotic he was in no way as passive as our boy Bu Fang here, he did stuff and took care of his people.

The direct consequence is that"Black Tech" is readable and also quite good if you don't expect too much, "Gourmet of Another World" instead is frustrating and at times just downright boring.

Overall I wouldn't reccomend this. <<less

A very bland dish. There is only one ingredient I like, which is the dog. Unfortunately, the cook is not able to utilize it properly. I ate stuff like this way too often to bother eating in this restaurant. 3*

This has got to be one of the best webnovels I have read so far. It is a much more human and contemplative work than most cultivation novels which are mostly just wish-fulfillment works with OP protagonists being tyrannical and hypocritical.

The later challenges that face him are answered by Power of Friendship done right. Not giving him instant powerups after being smashed into the ground by the villain, but after long years (and centuries) of introspection and soul-searching to finally have that realization and clarity of purpose that is far... more>> more realistic, visceral and raw.

It is not perfect. It possesses much of the flaws of its genre: deus ex machina, forgotten side characters, mysoginy (though definitely not as bad as many others), over-the-top attacks, and that for some reason the protagonist is always in the weakest land and goes through a linear succession of ever stronger places. But for all these faults, it carries that value of having heart, that being strong isn't only to be a prick who by beating all the handsome men, gets to have women falling all over his feet who for some reason are all enamored by his boorishness. Standing on the top doesn't have to mean heartlessness nor tyrannical domination, but also being able to laze about, enjoying food with friends, and that all troublemakers will be stripped and thrown out. <<less

The system and the world is quite interesting. Not bad even. But there are few factors that drag this novel down to hell. First, the plot holes. There are so much plot holes in this novel that sometimes you question the author's sanity. A level god like robot slacks against a half step level 9, because why not. Sometimes you just feel like smashing your head against the wall because of the inconsistencies. And the biggest turnoff is the MC himself. He is basically a blank template. He doesnt have... more>> a personality, no quirks, no hobbies, no pride, no dignity, no bottom line. He is basically not a human being. Could be labeled as a robot with an AI that cant evolve. Kind of like Siri. All kinds of people like his friends, customers, innocents and criminals alike gets killed or mistreated around him because of his inadequacy and lack of emotion, and sum japanese beta tendencies. All the good stuff. The author is just looking for quick cash at this point. Use this novel to milk as much money as possible, while copy pasting all the past chapters and changing some minimal stuff. <<less

I gave 02 stars to the story for being and following unique cultivation path which is not exactly a cultivation path. Well what can I say except for the plot being unique. It is unique as it only focuses on MC following the path of cook. He just keeps on cooking and nothing else. Side stories sometimes are enjoyable. But that's all their is to it. MC is lazy, expressionless, and arrogant. There's no plot twists and schemes, no sect joining, no adventure. Just simple cooking and conquering people's stomachs.

The story is all about cooking and I don't understand most of it. The character interactions are funny though. Most of the reviews say it is repetitive, so I am dropping it. If there was a plot or proper story line, I would've definitely read this. If you want to laugh a little, definitely try the starting chapters.

This is better than gourmet food supplier simply because GFS threw away the MC's personality as fast as possible. making GFS about the food only. this made GFS boring to read since the food isn't even real or possible to recreate unlike Shokugeki no Soma.

This novel however still tries his hardest to make the MC have some sort of personality besides being the 'cook'.

The customers here also have more personality compared to GFS where you won't miss much even if you call them Customer A, B, C or D...

Unfortunately, the... more>> translation is super slow so i'll probably see you guys in 2020. <<less

This is clearly inspired and blatantly copied Gourmet Foot Supplier. GFS is created on 2016.07 while this is on 2016.09. The author changes the settings to cultivation world rather than modern hence and added some stuffs so it's more fantasy rather than slice of life. Fortunately the copying is only for first 30-40 chapters. After that, it branches on its own to something different, more adventurous, politics, and blood spilling. Unfortunately, looking the numbers of present chapter, I know this will have loop scenarios as the loop setup is already to apparent. The story becomes repetitive when food/liquor becomes panacea, you need to breakthrough? Eat food or drink this. Huh, nobody can cure you? Try this dish. I know this will introduce new power system several times later on (or I usually call it arse pulling to extend more chapters and milk the readers)

Spoiler

MC is already rank 6 of 10 rank described in novel description/synopsis at ch235. Now you tell me there won't be any new power system when there are 1200 chapters to go

This is a great novel, seriously - the greatest selling point is that the novel doesn't ever deviate from it's semi-serious-but-really-just-a-gag-on-a-dude's-cooking-gig feel.

Trying to review this is somewhat complicated, because the novel itself has layers of complexity. On the surface, it's just a story of a guy who levels up while gaining 'exp' from cooking.

Spoiler

He grows his cultivation/level from energy crystals, which is used as currency to pay for his food

[collapse]

Go deeper than that, however, and we start to notice plot lines threaded throughout the whole story. That said, this kind of progression isn't for everyone - there are times where you think, 'ooh he's gonna really blow this time, playing gloves are coming off', our MC responds in the most emotionless, blase manner possible. If you don't find the thought of a low-key, calm, the bartender who is mysterious but also just kinda hangs out while plots keep swirling around, kind of person as a protagonist doesn't seem appealing to you, than this isn't the novel for you. If you love that kind of thing, this is seriously it.

*I'll come back and edit this post later when I can wrap my thoughts together better - thanks for bearing with me*

Overall, a super solid piece of work. <<less

Great cooking novel. At first I thought it was just like Gourmet Food Suplier but while GFS focuses on only chinese dishes (dishes from other nations like Italy, Germany or France don't even get mentioned) Gourmet of Another World, as it's name says is in another world. Because of the true Energy or Qi, whatever you call it, it stays a great read, even after 120 chapters whereas GFS get's really boring ater a hundred chapters.

I know the authors of both novels are chinese but that doesn't mean only chinese... more>> food is tasty and deserves to be mentioned. For an European like me it's just annoying to see that the only thing "The System" gives away are dishes from another CHINESE province.

GoAW does it a lot better because of the special cooking techniques the MC learns and those new types of foods he himself invents. All in all a good read but with pretty low chapter release rate for an Qidian novel. <<less
