Not following the bunch, I want to say about my opinion of this novel

Story: Amazing story with different twist and turns (excluding the romance part)

Romance:No matter what you say 1/3 of story was directly or indirectly related to romantic plot but didn't written well or should I ruined the story, Well think yourself, if you love someone and other party loved you back and there is no obstruction, no opposition, no loss but still why the fu*k you don't get together with them which takes half the part of story. 'Terrible' if you ask me.

In my opinion, the authors other work' WDQK' is overall much much better than this depressing novel

Average at best, it contains pretty much all the wrong thing I look down in a novel.

Lack of diverse plot, all the plot relate to either enmity, treasure hunt, save some old powerful dude or his relative, Alchemy tourny, few fillers, more enmity (created by the last treasures hunt), a beauty pop-out, more enmity because of the beauty, re-treasure hunt cycle, until the end.

The MC is always fighting enemies with stronger cultivation, in case he can't beat 'em (or he flee), he will power-up and come back to kill them.

However... more>> the worst part: I come to KILL YOU, yet you dare to FIGHT BACK AND KILL ME, I'm from X clan you ant. They will hunt you down to the end of the earth. <<less

The story is repetitive and the MC is lucky as h*ll. The story lacks suspense and does not present any surprises, because you always knows that the MC will always get the required materials/resources/person to advance.

Poor writing and poor plot, though world building is ok.

However, the story uses a lot of exaggerated measures. For example, the author often writes something likes 1000 feets wide XXX, 99 feet high gorilla in a cave etc.

Further, the power levels seems to be ignored and the author often forgets what he wrote earlier, and... more>> the MC seems really really s*upid.

I regret spending so much time on this piece.

Just poor quality.

I give it a 1 star. <<less

Too much repetition and fillers. Translation in the latest chapters also is not the best. Many basic errors or names switched with other novels.I really like this autors works, but this time a few hundred chapters were unnesesary or stretched - wasted time.

This is one of the first novels I started reading, and one of the first I completely finished.

The good part of this novel is that, although the setting isn't that original and it does have a lot of cliches, the story gives a real feeling of adventuring through a mysterious world and uncovering its secrets, the progression of the MC is also very satisfying.

The global concepts in the world are relatively interesting, such as the heavenly flames, alchemists and pill refining (and MC being one), the vanished overlords in the... more>> world and their story (Dou Di).

The main problem of this series is that it is 1648 chapters, but you can skim 70% and read only 500 chapters. The global story is interesting, but the individual arcs are boring as they are all the same.

MC goes to new area, gets into fight with young master of a big local sect, the MC has to train - fight - train - fight etc climbing his way to increasingly strong people. The sect has someone MC can't handle: MC his luck comes into play and he gets a strength boost or new strong ally. He wins, and the sect acknowledges his strength. Of course the sect has some ice-queen beauty, who melts for MC his good looks / strength.

Other annoying habits of the author:

  • The author takes every, and I mean every chance to describe the looks / strengths of a character. Who is this beauty? Oh its the MC! In the middle of a fight? Describe the good looks! Did MC get a power up? Describe how powerful! Did someone sneeze? Explain all again!
  • The MC always comes to safe the day at critical fights, however first you get 3 chapters of how they are waiting and getting their ass wooped.
  • The fact that every element in the story which is introduced, is used. Someone talks about some super treasure? MC gets it. Introduction of a legendary item or place? In MC's pocket.
  • The MC and allies are unable to reason or think. The main villains are strong experts, black-clothed and surrounded by black fog, however MC or allies are unable to think of who this 'black-clothed mysterious expert surrounded by black fog' could be (every arc at least 5 times).
I would not recommend this novel. I thought the global story was interesting, but you will have to read through so much repetitive and boring story which actually doesn't add anything, that it is not worth the effort. <<less

One of the most hypocritical, egoistic, self-centered, indifferent, selfish MC's I've come across. Whatever he does is right in the name of his so called justice. The plot story is good enough but the main character's hypocritic mentality leaves you really frustrated. I rather find the side characters more interesting.

This Chinese novel is the type of adventurous epic that really reals me in. I really enjoyed reading how it builds the world, the fights, and the characters. The MC is not one that starts out OP but slowly climbs his way towards success. He's one of those hide'em until its necessary type of guys and its quite understandable from how sneakily he has to handle things in the beginning. Though the story isn't perfect as I really wished that they would flesh out Yao Lao's, his mentor, story a... more>> bit more. But what matters the most is how enjoyable the story is to read and for that it's an easy 5/5. <<less

I had such high hopes for this story and it delivered up to my expectation as one of best novel but that was just the beginning after that it deteriorated into a story which is commonly seen in almost all the stories in its genre. The fight scenes are absurd as the author start telling the awsomeness of MC between fights.. but this novel has its plus also as some character are pretty solid and quality of the writing is top notch too.. so all in all this is above... more>> average novel and a good time pass...I will give it a 3.5/5 but thats not an option so I am giving it a 4 stars.. <<less

Awesome novel. Great plot, pretty good MC who never gots super tresures without suffering to obtain them or work like a s*ave for them so there is not much seeing him get everything just because he is the "chosen one".
Pretty good antagonist and well manage of the suspens during the conflics.

Truly a masterpiece of work.

The real gem of the story is how well it flows together, you never feel as though a ridiculous leap has been taken or something completely ridiculous will happen next chapter if feels like a rough draft was written for everything leading to a concatenated world. If you have ANY love for crafting Xianxia I strongly recommend.

PLUS ITS PLAIN AWESOME!

One of the best CN I've read (on par with Against the Gods, I Shall Seal the Heavens, and Transcending the Nine Heavens <- this is the best CN I've ever read by the way, it's a must read if you haven't checked it out yet) and the one that got me hooked onto the CN category. The story and power levels are well fleshed out, with exciting plot points and iconic scenes on the Lord of the Rings-esque level. Forgive the fool a couple comments below me who ranked... more>> Desolate Era and Tales of Demons and Gods above BTTH; those who have read those webnovels will naturally understand that they're markedly inferior (lots of loose plot threads that are introduced but then are forgotten a few chapters later, inconsistently pacing, one dimensional villains & characters). All in all, this is one of the great classics of this genre and definitely deserves its ranking as Qidian's #2 most recommended Xuanhuan of all-time ;D <<less

Ah, BTTH. For some reason I never really wanted to read you. After reading stories on these websites for like 6 months, I finally was bored enough to read this. My verdict: not bad.

BTTH is actually alright, but it isn't nearly as good as some of the other popular stories (ATG, ISSTH, HJC, DE, etc). There isn't really anything outright wrong with it, but everyone in the story is just kind of dumb. A group of fighters waits until their leader is attacked and almost killed before taking action. An... more>> obvious plan somehow gets saved until the critical moment and then it becomes the genius plan of the brilliant MC. That kind of stuff. Fortunately it's at least executed sort of well so you're not just mad and saying "You're all f*cking ret*rded."

The writing style of the authour also isn't that great. There's always a lot of repetition in these stories, so you just sorta have to accept it as a quirk of the genre. However how it's handled in BTTH is definitely a bit sub-par.

Because of these two issues, this novel is definitely not amazing. If TDG is 2, ATG is 1.5, and DE and ISSTH are 1. Then BTTH is 2.5 or a 2. Decent, but nothing amazing. Though the plot overall seems alright and the Flame Manta cultivation with alchemy and the heavenly flames is kinda cool. <<less

One of the better ones out there. Got yourself an amazing MC and an amazing world and one of the best teacher-student relationships. The author might take a lot of chapters to build up a few things but it only creates a positive hype. The concept of heavenly flames is REALLY good. The harem is there but only to be shipped.... more>>
Spoiler

he ends up with two wives only, though

The TL are great as well. I am look forward to more of it. Would definitely recommend it.

EDIT: ah.. CN. Why you do this to me? I dropped this around c700 or so. Actually, way earlier than that. Ratings dropped to 3 in my book. Why? Terrible arcs, with terribly bad pacing to the point where I can tell with guarantee that there is at least 400 chapters of fillers in this 1.8k chapter long series. I am hugely disappointed at what this became, and even the increased release rate couldn't help. Similar to WDQK, great start but the plot was completely lost in between.

THIS IS NOT MANGO APPROVED. <<less

The author has much higher writing skills than many other Xianxia but sometimes one can feel a deliberate attempt to increase the number of chapter with fillers. Too many parallel side-plots are sometimes not good if you are reading along with the translation since one tends to forget about all side stories. For example, there are about 5 side-stories progressing in parallel at the moment (which would be interesting if reading in one go) making it feel like it is slow (because all plots are progressing, the overall pace for... more>> each plot is delayed significantly). <<less

One of my favorites, it is a typical Chinese novel (MC is weak at the start, he finds some kind of treasure (in this case its a ring which contains Yao Chen), he goes on a journey and is strong or relatively strong compared to the people that looked down on him when he comes back), however, what I really like about this novel is the plot, although the MC is lucky, he doesn't become op instantly and has to work hard, he has to endure many hardships to... more>> get together with xun er, I didn't expect the MC to get together with medusa (it was extremely unexpected), there are many fights (MC is extremely arrogant) and he is dedicated to his loved ones, the only reason I give this novel 4 stars is cuz the ending is a cliffhanger. <<less

I also like Yun Yun very much, I hope they can be together. As the original book party, I can only say that I want to give the director of the anime a big compliment. After all, Tudou was only in his early 20s when he wrote the book, and he was still very young. It is understandable that Xiao Yan and Yun Yun have no ending. When you are young, you will always choose to People who can fight against the world for themselves are together, Medusa is such... more>> a woman, and she has the energy to love whoever; But Yun Yun, she can't do it, she can't do it, because she is too mature and has too many worries. LOL, this story is terrible. Terrible characters, too much author's interference to protect the MC's ego. The women, yikes. Well, admitedly, subpar romance is the norm I guess.
Alrighty then, our MC, whom has been maddened with vengeance for his face because someone broke their engagement. Well, while he was engaged, our MC did echi things with our FL, Xun'er. That was part of the story, reminisced by the MC, stuff he did while he was like 10, falling in love with Xun'er while engaged to another woman. Well, it... more>> is a different time you say, doesn't matter, the MC is suppose to be from this era, which really doesn't show at all. Besides, in a world with power where women can be as powerful as well, why should a woman not make her own choice and have a harem of men of her own.
No one in the Xiao family had any growing concerns about the budding relationship between our MC and the FL. Of course, we cannot blemish the MC and his hypocrisy with things like critical thought. Nope, the MC must be the righteous one, no shades of gray, all to get his man ego placated. Same thing when he came across s*avers, his thoughts, none of my business, but when it came to his family and others that stood by, those with connections to him, well of course he had a problem then.

Now, like above, to save the MC and his ego and reckless behavior, there has to be something to happen or come along to keep him from learning a lesson or face actual permanent consequences. In the end, there is nothing consequential that happens to the MC that affects his character in any way because there is always something that the lazy author keeps inserting in the story from something actually happening.

I did find some points interesting, and maybe this is all meant to be brainless entertainment that goes from point "a" to point "b:. But the author wrote in a style where this is suppose to be a serious world or if he did not mean it that way, I must of failed as a reader or he failed as a writer to portray it as such. The females were plot points, a beauty then and there while the other bland female had to be taken off stage because all she does is praise the MC and is always waiting around for his attention like a doormat, so the writer had to put another beauty to start that whole process off again, until she is the one that pines after the MC and is willing to follow quietly behind him and forgo all to any little independence priorly written. All females are place there to highlight the MC, not actual people of their own agency. Kind of like the plot and the world itself. The MC comes along and triggers all these flags while the people in the background move around like robots until the MC shows up in a new location. Pretty much the world revolves around the MC and feels dead otherwise. No secret realm opens up until he arrives on scene and he happens to come to the right place and time for things to be triggered like a trial, a competition, just something or another that happens once in a while but happens to just conveniently happen because the MC is there.

Another reviewer is right, it seems like everything just belongs to the MC, like the fire in that one tower in the academy arc. But don't worry, the writer would never make our MC in the wrong and something happens to rectify that once our MC gets a hold of that fire.

And that is what happens when you read this story with a critical eye. The only reason why I was interested is because other Chinese writers kept putting this template, or a character that represents this particular MC or the actual MC himself in their own story, especially ones with a story revolving around a master or one of sect development. I cannot believe that this crap is held in such high regard to many web novelists that they keep praising this story in their own works like it is some masterpiece. <<less

BTTH doesn't waste time when beating down the MC within his Sect, only for him to rise back up and commence the slapping of many faces. Aided by his very own Super Secret Spirit Elder stuck in an ancient artifact, who honestly is way too helpful, making a good chunk of the story feel like an extended tutorial. Beyond the usual clichés, it's the playful relationship between the MC Xiao Yan and his mysterious childhood friend Xun-Er that made going through the opener more enjoyable.

Followed by Xiao Yan's low stakes... more>> adventures containing random encounters with Arrogant a**holes and Jade Beauties... Way too many beauties. Unfortunately most characters seem to be mentally deficient, leading to the same old s*upid dialogue & conflicts repeating ad nauseam. Even worse is how every capable faction seems to ignore the big bad Hall of Souls, which goes against their best interest. Occasionally something like an Auction or Competition will break up the monotony. But over 1, 600 chapter even these become repetitive, making this novel a drag to read, right up until its forgettable end. <<less
