ExR’s summary:

An average, ordinary university student had his first life burned away in a painful death from a fire, causing him to transmigrate into a prince of another universe. However, never did he expected that his younger brother, who he fiercely protected and ultimately brought to the throne, would be the one to betray him. Upon being on the brink of death after suffering three years of torture, he was thrown into a river.

Scarred physically and mentally, he ended up being washed up at an eccentric yet peaceful place he had never heard of before. Having nowhere to go, he began working as a helper in the government office, apathetic about his life.

Will he be able to heal from his traumas and rediscover the beauty of life?

Tldr: A healing story of a transmigrator who slowly recovers from his trauma, finding happiness and fluffy romance in a strange yet peaceful place.

Author’s summary:

An average, normal university student transmigrates into the royal family in another world, where he becomes one of the successors of the throne. Life in the palace is inevitably difficult though, what with all the scheming enemies around him. This man’s only wish in this world is to be able to protect his “younger brother,” and for that, he’ll do anything–whether by hook or by crook–to ensure his brother’s safety and have him succeed the throne.

The man never once expected, though, that the person whom he swears to protect would be the one to stab him in the back. He got locked in a dungeon where he was tortured for three years. And when he was on the brink of death, his body was thrown away into the river.

When he wakes up, he finds himself in an eccentric and peaceful place, where everyone is suspiciously more than what they seem…

One of the best! A story about a traumatised and disfigured character, who finds love, acceptance and a new peaceful life in a quiet mysterious village. Relationship with ML is so sweet and fluffy. No angst and drama, just a lovely, beautiful and heartwarming read. No complex plot or exciting action sequences. This is really all about how MC finds a new lease in life, trying hard to find a reason to keep living, slowly (very slowly) healing by doing mundane routine tasks like gardening, cooking and raising chickens. Slow... more>> pacing is coherent because how in hell does one get over such a torturous past? Re-reading this, I always ask myself if I can be as strong as this MC ? <<less

The story itself is average. A decent filler read, but nothing I would go out of my way to recommend. I get that they're trying to portray the MC as depressed and empty, but since the novel only skims over what should be a tragic backstory before jumping in right away, it makes it hard to sympathize with him.

I just have to say that the translation quality is... not great. There are sections that make me think they just gave up and ran it through Google translate. The editor definitely... more>> didn't do their job since there are frequent typos, and the tenses can jump around in one sentence. The inconsistency with how they translated things was jarring enough to throw me out of the story several time. Especially using things like "policemen" instead of a more historically accurate "guards". <<less

The summary is REALLY misleading. This awful story is definitely not heart-warming and definitely not about recovering from trauma.

I have trauma after reading it.

It's a badly written story about a depressed trauma victim succumbing to more emotional abuse by a band of psychopaths. It's hard to believe this is not a troll work. The plot really goes out there by the end and enters horror territory FAST and out of the blue. The MC is bland, whiney and unpleasant, the ML is PSYCHO (not in a good way), the plot... more>> is insane, the writing poor. Read it, if you must, like a curio of the genre, because I promise you that you won't find a similar 'masterpiece' easily. <<less

I am glad I found this and read it. It was so sweet, short and heartwarming. It's really an intriguing Slice of life with mystery. I love MC and ML interaction and their slow relationship progression (totally my thing). There are lots of deep emotional moment and I really like how it helped our MC to recover and lead to happiness and how although it's tagged under shounen-ai, we still got some detail on their first time~papapa (͡° ͜ʖ‪ ͡°)

Although I... more>> really loved the story, it really had potential to be better. It sad that all the depth of main character was given at the near end of the story which can lead to not being able to grip their characteristics properly. Honestly even though we know MC got betrayed and tortured and almost killed, his character really didn't shown us that and so even if he ended up healing from depression and trauma, it's not much emphasiz deeply and properly (for me)..... except for the time when they were outside (and it was very sudden too). It would have been better if we got the detailed story on MC as prince and how he grown up and suffered betrayal and how it traumatized him and how he then ended up recovering and healing with love and care. It would then have made better impact (afterall detailed version hits totally different from summary).... well, It's still good the way it is.

As for ML
Spoiler

It was a real surprising to see him as psychopath cold blooded person. Well, head off to MC for still loving him as for who he is.... I know a lot of you might not agree and won't like it but, Everyone deserve to get loved, even if they are psychopath. well, it's better if they can change for better but it is not easy to change one characteristics, especially if had it for long times and so if someone is okay to love them for who they are then who are we to interfere. And so I heads off to MC for still loving ML and willing to stay with him and as long as ML doesn't hurt MC, I don't give a f*ck (This is fictional afterall)

Lastly, I want to be in Guang Tian too. Where can I find such a sweet, peace, lovely place.

The things that Xiao Xia said to MC near the river, totally hits me differently everytime and so hard. Wish someone had said that to me.

This is a delightful short piece about the redemption of a broken man as he's brought into a sanctuary after being thrown away. It a story of acceptance and moving on, teaching us that the past is not as important as the future.

Because of this, MC makes the decision not to tell ML about his prior lives, and also withholds the history behind ML's mother. Having this knowledge would only have negative impacts on their future and thus, MC decides not to disclose this information.

The following excerpt form this novel really sums up the novel magnificently:

A different life, scenery, and people. Bit by bit, his broken spirit was melted by the warmth slowly. After that, it congealed into a new shape and color gradually. Neither was it intentional nor was it unnatural. He was, truthfully, noisily, then gently, integrated here after starting afresh. And then, presently, a specific person said it was worth it no matter how long it took.

In terms of the actual setting, it's a bit similar to the manhua Lanxi Zhen.

Spoiler

The small town of Guang Tian is a little hidden utopia filled with talented individuals of remarkable influence who occasionally go out into the greater world.

There's really not much angst or adventure in this novel because, like the summary states, this is about recovery from trauma and finding happiness. <<less

It goes: calm, calm, calm, calm, HOLY SHIT, calm, calm.

Hahaha... yes, well, other than the shocking intensity of Ch. 37/38 it's a very sweet and heart-warming tale. The description is well-worded - this story is about recovery, growth, and finding meaning in life once more. No angst or drama. The slice-of-life vibes for the majority of the story were actually quite moving still, it really makes you want to cherish the peace and normalcy of everyday living. And their relationship is just so adorable, with the doting-husband-ML and tsundere-floofball-MC dynamics,... more>> I'll never get tired of it.

A hidden gem!

This novel is beautifully written! A mix of philosophy and surrealism perfectly blend together this bittersweet bl novel and present a different perspective of transmigration/revenge novels!

A more in-depth summary:

The MC, who used to be a university student, has already died twice. The first death was when he was burned alive in the modern world and transmigrated into an ancient world. The second death was when he was tortured and thrown into the ocean by his younger brother in the ancient world. Even though the MC technically drowned in... more>> the ocean, the MC was somehow saved and rescued by a godly doctor, which is where the story begins. After going through a series of death, torture, heartbreak, and betrayal, the MC ends up in a city full of OP MCs. Every person in the city can be considered to be an OP MC in their own right, a "chosen one of heaven" or a "born once every hundred year talent" cliché protagonist that is in every cultivation novel. Simply put, the MC landed in a peaceful city loaded with OP MCs that can dominate the world, but instead of choosing to showoff to the world, the OP MCs choose to live a peaceful retiree lifestyle in a city full of other OP MCs. In this way, the MC starts a process of healing his past traumas/wounds while living among powerful martial artists.

MC+ML Intro/Romance Plot:

MC: an average college student, a little tsundere, heavily traumatized by his past

ML: a powerful martial artist, lack common sense/morals, foolish at times, doting and loving towards the MC and kind towards the citizens of his city (city is called Guang Tian)

The romance is neither slow or fast even though the ML falls in love first. Instead of the usual romance clichés, the love built by the MC and ML is based on healing and understanding. Healing past traumas while understanding that love needs compromise and sincerity. The love between the MC and ML is natural and sweet.

Overall:

Instead of a block bluster novel full of adventure and actions, this story is more focused on the turmoil of an average person transmigrating, then meeting with betrayal and death. Unlike the novels where the protagonists can easily accept the fact they had transmigrated and easily start building up power or those protagonists that have a second chance at life for revenge, this novel present a realistic transmigrated protagonist that has lived two lifetimes and is tired of living. Some may say this novel is depressing/gloomy or has too many fillers with no plot, which is true to a certain extent since this novel is a slice of life genre. The only plot is the journey of the MC's spiritual healing, which provides a very therapeutic sensation. I highly recommend this novel to those who want a break from all those high-strung novels with swords and bullets flying everywhere. <<less

As a slice of life novel it is really good. It's unique on it's own way, differing from others reincarnation in another world in the aspect that MC doesn't want to use his past knowledge to strike rich but just to pass by (have enough money just for their necessity).

The characters have their own stories, personality, quirks, defects and traumas.

In general it's an enjoyable read, mostly light and funny.

H just a bit on the end..... nothing detailed though......

Uuuhwa~ This story hits me right in the feels. The narrative of the MC's struggles to overcome his traumas (he experiences things like depression, severe PTSD, existential crises, suicidal tendencies) after being burned to death, reborn, betrayed, tortured, and left for dead is exceptionally well-crafted. I'm actually a bit surprised that I haven't come across any other stories that take a deeper look into the existential side of finding yourself alive again after death. The MC's despair over the value of existence after living two extremely different lives and the pain of living even after essentially dying twice really struck a cord with me over the contradiction of a person's coexisting fragility and strength.

Luckily, there's a lot of fluffy moments and some comedy to balance things out. The ML is so wonderfully loving and doting, to the point where I can see why the MC turns into a tsundere around him. All that sweetness being tossed around, someone needs to rein it in. The ML is sooo sappy, he was probably a tree in his last lifetime.

[collapse]

The summary might be a bit misleading. If any new reader is expecting a grand scheme/fight for the throne, this really isn't that type of story. This is a story about a man's struggle in finding meaning to live. TRIGGER WARNING: emphasis on the Trauma tag. Discussed more under my Spoilers above.

The county is like a paradise and the birth place of the most powerful people in that world. They go out in the world to gain experience but since many of them are coveted by kings because of their power and ability, they are often persecuted so they inevitably go home to that county. It's a very exclusive place. There are only three ways to be a citizen. First, they must be born there. Second, they could be orphans who have been picked up. Third, which is applicable for the MC, you drift there accidentally and have no other place to go.

[collapse]

As for why the brother betrayed the MC

Spoiler

It wasn't really explicitly spelled out in the novel but the author made a note. I think because ppl were clamoring for a chapter about the brother's thoughts. It was not unexpected actually. Basically, the MC coddled the brother too much and our MC was too powerful so when the brother became king, he felt that the MC is a danger to him. He has a short reign because after the supposed death of the MC, he can't control his scheming subordinates, which were being handled by the MC before. In the end, he hangs himself in the palace of the MC. So yeah, I'm pretty sure he regretted it. Of course, I still can't fathom the need for the cruelty and torture of the MC. If the brother feared him, isn't death just enough. Why torture him for 3 years.

I usually favored angsty stories and having a revenge theme in them was the icing on top. So when I saw the premise I was fully expecting to see some dog-blood scenes but on the contrary, I found and hurt-comfort and healing journey that swept me off my feet.

54 chapters were not enough or maybe it was indeed the perfect length. The pacing was slow and gradual, the plot didn't force the MC (Xiao Nan) to heal his wounds both inside out fast but instead, it gave him time... bit... more>> by bit... at his own pace until he could finally claim that he was now a new person. Happy, contented and loved by those he cherished.

"There’s no need to do anything. Just let him take his time. No matter how long it takes; it will be worth it.”

“My Xiao Nan had suffered too much. I don’t have the heart to force him, nor am I willing to add any displeasure to him.”

If our ML (Mo Shu-xiansheng) wasn't one of the most toothachey sweet ML out there, I don't know who is. Just like the people from GT, he albeit being playful and childish sometimes gave Xiao Nan a home, a sense of belongingness and time to wash away the pain of the past. He was a multi-faceted individual with a painful backstory, yet I just loved how he embraced Xiao Nan's entire being (the ugly, the painful, the teasing, the beautiful) parts of him. I've seen a lot of encompassing love from MLs in my danmei reads but I found Mo Shu's love and intention for Xiao Nan one of the purest. I couldn't explain as it squeeze something in my chest every time he treated the MC with every single softness and love that he deserved.

Our MC was very amusingly funny. His inner thoughts took away any boredom that I might have felt while reading the first few chapters that cemented the plot. The monotonous life of GT was given by Xiao Nan color and laughter. So I completely understood why the people of GT adored him so much. He was this ray of sunshine that was covered with barbs yet concealing a pure heart. His trauma was deep-seeted yet with the help of the people of GT, those barbs were shed and the inner beauty was revealed. Fully healed, ready to love Mo Shu and live the rest of his newfound second chance with those he cared about.

This was one heck of a journey. A very unique storyline, funny and extremely sweet CP interaction that you could end up acquiring diabetes and a wholesome slice of life theme that would make you realize the value of healing and acceptance. <<less

Awesome!! 🔥 I love the fact that this novel is more on lines of 'healing' rather than taking 'revenge'. Both leads are quite good.

This novel has a lot of comic punchlines which are mostly MC's inner thoughts 🤣

It's a healing novel... It has a lot of subtle hidden meanings and makes you wonder what actually are you trying to achieve by living. Honestly, I won't say everyone will love it as much as I do as some people may find it too short or not relatable, but it still touches some strings of your heart nevertheless. For me, I am at a stage in my life where I always ponder over the things that our MC here keeps thinking about and hence it did touch my heart... more>> and made me feel like loving yourself is the best thing in the world..... just living a life, where you appreciate yourself and your loved ones... finding joys in your day-to-day activities and leaving this world someday with a satisfied smile is all I wish for..

Also, even though this novel is quite simple, it still has some twists and turns that I did not expect at all... well I did wonder what that wuxia tag was for at first, nevertheless it still shocked me here and there.

Plus, one more thing stunned me a lot. It is super romantic...I really thought it would be more towards slice of life style, but ahhhhhh the romance here will make you feel like....."ahh I want to have a love like that". it's not the cliched kind nor heavy on fluff, but a mild and gentle kind of romance.

it does have some things that may seem very unreal or unnecessary but it does not affect the overall feel of this novel.... to sum it up, imagine the below scenarios

  1. your arm hurts a lot and there is this pain inside that feels like someone is stabbing a needle. someone gives you a herbal medicine, which when applied warns your body, and that pain slowly dissolves..
  2. Its windy early morning, chilled with rain drizzles, you are wrapped up in a warm blanket sitting outside viewing the green lush trees sipping a cup of hot drink and watching the drizzles ripples on a still lake drop by drop
  3. You have waited an hour outside your favourite cafe to get a bite of your favourite cake, after a long time, you finally get a nice peaceful seat beside a window and your favourite cake is finally placed in front of you for a bite.. you savour each and every bite looking out the window and dreaming on.
that's a bit like how you might feel reading this novel... like a warm hug from someone you trust. I had the sweetest smile throughout this short sweet read... <<less

I loved a lot of things about this, but a few elements near the end felt a bit.. Thrown in, incongruent. Still a hurt & comfort story in the end, a story of the MC learning to look forward to tomorrow.

Some of the lines and scenes around his depression and apathy towards living really hit me. Awesome translation!

This novel was a little... confusing for me. For the most part, especially the initial phase, it was a calming read where MC, after his big betrayal, took one step at a time in his "new" life. It's not wrong to call it a recovery phase, but in my opinion, he didn't really recover? But more like after taking life a step at a time, he slowly disregarded the part experience (betrayal) and pretty much start afresh. Nothing wrong with that, but I hesitate to call that "recovery", unlike the... more>> previous reviews. Other than that though, it was pretty calming.

However, the latter half when certain details of ML was revealed, I felt the change a little abrupt and a little like that trait was "for the sake of making the ML special" rather than any contribution to the overall story. The #Yandere tag on NU doesn't quite fit, and instead,

its all really nice to see him heal and there are quite a few tearful moments but everything goes down hill for me once they head out of the county. We suddenly learn that the male lead is actually a complete psychopath with no regard for human lives. Heck we humans feel more compassion towards ants than what he feel towards any “outsider”.
the reason why I didnt like it is not cuz of the bloodshed but because the MC was once an outsider himself. Seeing the ML do that made me think of what might have happened had they met in any other circumstances. Im certain he would have killed the MC and with no emotion what so ever.

then we see the MCs reaction and damn. While his time in that place gave him the will to live it also spectacularly f*ck his head up (which was already very f*cked) . And the reveal of his true identity was so... I cant even find the word, but it gave the impression of extreme contempt as the scholar who knew of him before blatantly says his real name with an arrogant expression on his face almost as if to look down at him and marvel at how low his royal highness has fallen.

in the end these events completely turned the impressions I had of the characters around. The ML turn into a malevolent psychopath, the MC into a white lotus who seems to think his previous self too dirty and his current pure and clean. And the people of the country into arrogant people who look down on all outsiders as tr*sh not worth living.

anyway this novels is very very beautifully written, the way that you get to see the mc’s thoughts change as he heals, we see where he is twisted and why. And it also shows how the torture affected him instead of treating it as just a back story. Its an amazing story. If it wasn't because I personally couldn’t stand the road it was going towards I would have read till the end and continue to love the story as I did in the beginning. But hey thats just how personal taste works

You read that "[This is a story about recovery from trauma and finding happiness.]" at the end of the summary?

That's all you need to know.

The story is all about MC recovering after what happened to him and choosing to live, actively choosing to live, not going through life existing, finding a place where he belongs and he wants to stay. Little by little, day by day, helped by the people of this weird town he finds himself in.

Its a slow, slice of life story where the MC gets to heal himself after what happens with his brother in his second life. I would have given it a perfect 5 just because I love how the ML treats the MC. Someone mentions the MC doing childish things like overly salting the ML's snacks, but he only does that because he always gets teased by the ML.

I only have one issue with this book.

The ML's disregard for the lives of people outside this little town, and how everyone there couldn't care less about an outsider, besides the MC since they figured he wouldn't want to go back to where he was from after being tortured, bothered me. I was okay with the idea of other people that weren't in quite a hopeless state being killed or being tossed back into the river that brought them to the town so they don't spread stories. But from the scene where the ML and MC go back to the MC's old country, my like for the story dropped a bit. I also didn't like that the MC feared the ML after seeing him randomly cut people down because they were in his way, regardless of age or gender, which makes me wonder if he could have killed a child without a thought, since they weren't from his town.

I draw a line there. I also thought the MC should have talked to him about his fear and why indiscriminately killing is bad. Even after getting the warning in the spoilers, it still shocked me.

Thank you, Rikko, for your wonderful work on this novel. It truly is unique amongst a lot of the translated BL out there right now. It has a slow pace and a gentle feeling, but I never once felt bored reading it. The characters are so well fleshed out and the romance is so sweet. The language is also truly beautiful.
