I'm basing my score off of the story and the translation, as both can affect one enjoyment of the novel. First let me say the translation is not good, it reads like a story written by someone with very rudimentary understanding of English. Sentences feel unnatural and a lot of time it feels like the translator used google translate for words they don't know. I don't think they whole story is machine translated, but a significant part must have been. There are also times the translator doesn't bother translating things... more>> into English, like for word plays, puns and the likes. It is readable but for me and maybe some others, makes the story not enjoyable.

As for the story, unfortunately because of my increasing annoyance with the translation made me give up at around chapter 130. From what I've read this story is basically what I would call a "Youth Drama". Youth drama's in Asia, are basically stories of young adults (usually in college or high school) that are living life and doing things that young people are suppose to do. It usually centers around some kind of hobby or passion; be it sports, games or in this case martial arts. Now as for the story itself, its pretty typical of this genre. I don't think many people on here have seen this type of story before, but usual tropes are all there. The know it all friend, the quirky side characters, the fat best friend, and the often too perfect love interest.

The martial arts serves as a backdrop for the main character to experience love, friendship and so on and isn't really the main draw of this novel. If that is what your looking for then I would suggest this story isn't for you. These types of story would be closer to what you would find on the CW network, but more Asian if that makes any sense. If that sounds good to you and you don't mind bad quality translation then I would say read it, if not then stay away. <<less

Edit: Dropped it after after the hero and heroine become intimate, I got super envious of them. Hahaha.

    1. Everything that can be said is already better said by win by dying.
    1. On a personal point of view it really reminds me of my first love and a slight regret that had I read this novel beforehand, maybe my relationship would have been way better then it ever was.

Pretty unique as far as marial arts stories go. Most focus on the fighting with the romance being an afterthought, but here the romance and fighting/training are both prominent. It also doesn't have the usual never ending list of arrogant characters who exist only to be beaten up by the protagonist. At least so far, the story feels very grounded, almost like something that might really happen if such a world existed. The main character isn't some overpowering genius although he does get a lucky break very early on that... more>> allows him to quickly rise past his peers.

One thing I have always hated about cultivation novels is how badly thought out the world is- people just kill each other left and right with barely a reason and somehow the world is still filled with people who have lived for hundreds or thousands of years. Yet these people with all their years of experience behave like teenagers and die like flies. This novel, at least as far as I have gotten, has a far more realistic interpretation of how society would look like if martial arts could make you much stronger than regular people, and it is rather enjoyable for me. The translation is also excellent, again- so far. <<less

But it's also fine it ended there. It is very good modern cultivation novel with its own unique points. Do give it a try if u r bored of usual wuxia stuff.

Well for me it the best modern martial art novel with a good (true) romance. You will enjoy this novel alot if you love fights because it has a good description for the fights.

Rushed Ending.

Good Romance in start to mid of story. But no progressed in the later part.

... more>> Fighting Scene is too detailed that I'm guilty of skipping some part after the university nationals because it went boring... The vacation/war was actually more interesting, but it was short-lived. Then went back to the competition format.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of things I want to see in the ending that failed to satisfy my thirst.

I was hoping to see MC having a child. A good ending for Jingjing who has boy trauma. Zheke's business empire after studying for too long. A more detailed explanation when MC was found out to be their forum member. And Cheng reaching the pinnacle of martial arts. <<less

Overall the story was quite good. I love the uniqueness of the martial art background and power level. But the excess romance between ML and FL are a bit exhausting and keep chipping my interest towards finishing this novel.

This novel revolves around martial arts and romance. Problem is that I enjoy neither, not the way it's presented in this novel.

It might be an issue with the translation but fights are way too techno-babbly and half of it is imagining avalanches and stuff. It's very difficult to follow what is going on. At some point you start skipping over fight scenes entirely.

Throughout the entire novel almost all fights are tournament based. There's a long school tournament arc that takes up 60% of the novel, and when you think it... more>> finally opens up, MC gets a call "hey do you want to take part... in ANOTHER tournament?". And after another interlude "hey there's ANOTHER tournament". Read only if you don't mind it being all tournaments only.

Non-Tournament fighting Interludes are faw and few between. One of the later ones is a carbon copy of a movie plot (Wolf Brigade) that came out of nowhere. Kind of makes you feel you're suddenly reading a different novel altogether.

Everything else is romance, but the romance is just so very shallow. It starts out as a guide on how to pick up girls. MC and GF have no relation he picks her for the sake of picking someone, anyone, and he picks her based on her looks alone (the most beautiful flower in his school).

As it turns out she has a huge martial arts background while MC is from poor family. Thanks to his cheat he is instantly stronger than her and she quickly turns into decoration that literally carries MC's shoes. Early on she's part of his tournament team but half the time she is unable to fight because she's on her period.

Later on she's reduced to a chatting pratner, and although she has notable breakthroughs it goes like this: FC: hey I had a breakthrough, MC: ok go hide behind that pillar over there. Just because the female lead is also doing martial arts does not mean she's getting any screen time. Instead she's getting degraded a lot.

I regret not throwing the towel earlier, this novel was not my cup of tea. <<less

Romance; 10/10

Story; 8/10

Martial arts; 4/10

... more>> Slice of Life; 10/10

There's too much romance, why can't the title be replaced with Martial Arts Romance, that's clearer, right?

The title is martial arts master, but his martial arts are rarely shown at least every 20 episodes, and the story is too real life.

The increase in strength is also not very clear, from amateur Pin 9 to professional Pin 9 it only takes 6 months, while to go up to professional Pin 8 takes about a year.

Whereas Lin Que who was without Jindan could achieve it in a year too.

You could say his martial arts are too long-winded and do not match the title of the novel.

His use of Jindan is also not very clear for what other than to recharge stamina and awaken supernatural powers.

The author is not suitable for this kind of genre.

But if you are annoyed with the plethora of s*upid xianxia novels that qidian circulates, this might be a good choice for you.

Yes, maybe you will stop reading around the 200s episode, because the MC development is decreasing and not too much action and boring. <<less

If you are looking for a novel with a solid romance that is developed from the ground-up, then this is for you. The novel is basically 35% romance 40% martial arts/cultivation 25% family/forum related.

The romance is built up slowly from around chapter 20 and is thorougly developing till around chapter 120+, so if you're looking for some realistic romance where a guy woos a girl from scratch using realistic methods, then this novel will truly be right your alley (the romance development is of Eastern Style so no Western ho*kups... more>> or some sort happening here)

The martial arts in this novel is about a guy with a fortuitous encounter that has given him a biiig advantage over other martial artist, but his development is not solely based on the encounter he had, but how he works towards the goals of being an accomplished martial arts master. Yes, it is still filled with some deus-ex machina occurences here and there, however, it is still how the MC's attitude that help him get to where he is.

And the best part is! No you're courting death, arrogant young masters and all those bullsh*t cliches we get on xianxia novels <<less

Hello, giving my opinion, this novel cannot be considered the best but it is quite balanced in several aspects, the author did not write filler, the good relationship of the 2 Protagonists is quite good teaching me for my future relationships lol, the only thing to criticize about this novel it's suspense... in my opinion, the MC's life is very risk-free and without problems, making it almost predictable, by the end it cost him one more chapter of the wedding !!!, leaving the rest to the imagination if the MC... more>> arrived to the next level of Martial Arts ❤ <<less

Spoiler

An amazing story. The only complaint I have about it is that the ending was very rushed. I don't mean that it should have continued until he became the strongest in the world; what I mean to say is that the last three chapters should have been expanded to at least 10 more chapters and described things better. I mean we waited pretty much half of the novel for Yan Zheke to return and for them to get married, etc. But when she did it just ended just like that. It just doesn't do justice to the emotions that everyone felt.

Great novel otherwise ??

Rating: 3.5/5

Before reading the review, please understand that 3.5/5 is quite good (i haven't yet read a xianxia/xuanhuan novel to which I would give a 4.5, much less a 5).

Pros:

  • Great romance which is a big part of the story
  • Action is fun, doesn't get boring even when reading the same match-up multiple times
  • World doesn't revolve around MC and he isn't the strongest or completely outclasses opponents at his level. There are geniuses at his level that can give him a good fight and win against him
  • Side characters are actual people and don't exist in the story for just a couple chapters and to never be seen again
Cons:

  • Not story related but the translation is bad. Grammar mistakes all over the place, names often mixed up and the translators changed multiple times so there is no stability until the later chapters.
  • Villains were setup just to never be used again (the big bad was foreshadowed but stopped existing in the story from then on)
  • Further expanding the above point, it seemed as if the author had plans for the story that he just scrapped. There should have been more focus on experts internationally and at one point, the story was going that way but then it just never happened
  • Perhaps the biggest con is that near the end, the story just suddenly picked up speed and everything became fast-paced.
    Spoiler

We got multiple time-skips (could have been executed better and it would have been fine), MC's progress towards the pinnacle was glossed over and not as detail-oriented as before and MC never actually reached the pinnacle. There were other things but they were minor relatively.

    [collapse]
Overall, I enjoyed this novel a lot but it is plagued by bad translation and the rushed ending just really left a bad-taste in my mouth. I am inclined to give this 3 instead of 3.5 but the journey was great even with a lackluster ending.

Novel is worth reading because of balance between normal life and martial arts, also for the intelligent conversations.

Fight scenes are good, very descriptive. It can satisfy action fans.

I think josei should be added to tag because this is more of a romance story than a action novel.

... more>> The novel is slow at c202 as it becomes like a daily life of character where daily training, interactions and romance are described. This doesn't affect story quality but does feel like repetition.

If I don't update the review, I might have dropped the novel for later. It is still a good read because the writing is good. <<less

I liked it a lot. Everyone who is tired of normal xianxia, generic novels should read it. This novel is really unique. There is no harem. And the romance aspect is really well done. There are sometimes you feel the story is somewhat lagging because there are not fights continuously and author takes the time for slice of life aspect, but the fights when they happen are really good. I only give it 4 stars because the author ended it too soon, and I understand because author clearly said his... more>> health was not too good, and he took some breaks while writing the last two arcs so I get it. Slow, pure, and fluffy romance story between MC and his one true love set in an alternate modern day where martial arts is a pro sport. Within the first 10 chaps you'll what kind of novel it is and if you will like it. The comedy is nice, the dialogue (banter) between characters is pretty fun. If this type of novel is not your thing, read 10 chaps and then make a decision. This is written by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, so, of course, I had to check it out. The two genres he mashed together for this one are martial arts and romance. I came for the martial arts. The combat isn't as exciting or unpredictable as Throne of Magical Arcana, but it is a refreshing take on fantastical modern-era martial arts. It's a lot of fun to read.

The second, arguably the first, genre is romance. I have zero interest in romance, but the dating tips and development are funny. I definitely... more>> cheered on the couple once they got established. That said, there were so many kissing scenes that I skipped a few...

The plot and development are slow at first but very solid with few plot holes. The framework and background for this web novel are done very well, and the series easily builds up momentum as it goes on.

I don't like this as much as Throne of Magical Arcane, Lord of the Mysteries, or The Sage Who Transcended Samsara, but I believe that just has to do with the genre choices. I like more fantasy, mystery, and action than romance. <<less

This is 50% romantic comedy and 50% magical martial art tournaments.

The romance takes its time and the payback is good, no problems.... more>>
Spoiler

in 400 chapters and a year and a half of dating, two young adults in love finally arrived at second base... lol

[collapse]

But on the other hand, although the martial training and the fights are quite detailed, they are filled with confusing moments, and imo it's getting worse as the story and the level of the fights progress...

I also regret that the author only brushes on what the world would be if supernatural martial artists existed, only looking at the closed sphere of college tournaments (so far at least).

All in all, it's decent but I'm bored with it. <<less

Good novel!

The MC is quite similar to how a human male should be.

The romance is superb. Their relationship is almost 70% on martial arts, because they kept talking about it, on or off phone.

... more>> The downside of this novel is maybe..

There's so, so, so many fights going on that's its quite predictable.

Their romance is very good and heart warming, until at 70% of the story, when somehow it turned quite dull. (Mainly because the part should be of romance, but somehow it feels dull and lacking) but it's still is great. Very great Chinese modern novel! I liked this very much. <<less
