This novel is really good. Each floor the MC has to go through has a different test, but each has its own purpose. Switching back and forth from the sixtieth floor and the old stories behind how he climbed each floor is fairly interesting. My favorite floor is probably the 17th floor whereas the one that's most outstretched and boring is the 35th floor (... more>>
Spoiler

he has to repeat floor 1-34 all over again

).

Overall there's some excellent character development, plenty of tedious level ups without going overboard, and the translating quality is very good with the exception of changing some skill names halfway through the novel.

Alright. I don’t often write reviews since usually other people write what I want to say first, but I had to write a review this time. After all, no one is really agreeing with my own opinion in this story.

WARNING: this story is VERY slow in its progression and is very MC centric. As the MC is basically the only one crazy enough to enter Hell Difficulty, the whole LN is mainly just his thoughts and actions, as he rarely interacts with others. If you’re looking for a... more>> story where the MC is very social, this is not a story you should consider reading. In a way, this is definitely more psychological. The story is told mainly from his POV in 1st person, so I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t know his name, since he obviously doesn’t say his name when speaking/thinking. Since this story is very slow, there are a lot of events that just drag but if you’re patient, there are these huge events and reveals that are very exciting to read. But, yeah, they’re few and far between. Basically, you can skip all of the boring chapters without missing much, but you didn’t hear that from me. (;

The fact that the MC is alone while clearing the floor is what really slows the story down, since the floor’s are made to have teams past the 6th floor, but everyone else is dead, so the MC has to spend huge amounts of time replaying the same floor (on purpose) to grow strong enough to get to the next floor.

Small spoiler (written very long because I ramble), just to bring you some hope for the future of the fic:

Spoiler

The MC is godlike powerful on the 60th floor. He spends the whole story on the 60th floor (between the chapters of him going through the floors and such) which really sucks because it’s certain you’ll be allowed to leave the tutorial once clearing the 100th floor. As such, he’s stuck on the 60th floor and can’t go any higher without help and “help” is still on the 20th floor on C123, so... the pace really turns you off, right? HOWEVER it’s revealed somewhere a few chapters ago, around C120, that he actually broke the tutorial and floor 60 no longer exists. The gods are unable to watch or control him anymore. He’s actually trying to escape the tutorial and is pretty close to succeeding. The story can either go 2 ways: “help” gets there and they both escape the tutorial on the 60th floor OR they finish the rest of the floors together at a much quicker pace, since there’s finally 2 people clearing the floor at once than 1. So, look forward to this. There’s actually a huge chance that we’ll get to see life after the tutorial, which is what the whole story is about: getting powerful enough to save the world. Um, I ramble too much. Heh. SO BASICALLY, THERE’S A HUGE CHANCE THAT ESCAPE THE TUTORIAL ON FLOOR 60 INSTEAD OF HAVING TO FINISH ALL 100 FLOORS. HAVE HOPE.

Really enjoying the grind myself. It reminds me a bit of the modern Battlestar Galactica where the protagonists are just mentally abused repeatedly even as they start to gain some advantage over time, and I think the slow reveal of the true nature of the world is done quite well. The theme of perseverance in the face of psychological hell could not be made anymore clear to me, though it seems like a lot of commenters here still don't get it (Goddess of Slow is clearly best girl) . I... more>> wonder if people who say he has "so many abilities it doesn't fit on one page" are reading it on a Blackberry in 18pt font or are just accustomed to books like Cat in the Hat, because it barely takes up maybe 3 cm of vertical screen real estate on my 10" widescreen. <<less

I would give this 5/5 if it wasn't for the fact it has started to depend on filler material ever since the tournament arc began. They were already shifting perspectives between the present and the past (which is really just lazy writing. I know it's supposed to tease the reader into figuring out what happened during the time period but it ends up needlessly complicating things; it's purposefully withholding information to make it seem more mysterious than what it actually is) but now they're shifting between character viewpoints. I don't... more>> care about some chick's viewpoint we hardly interact with throughout the entire story, it's only done because the main character has had s*x with her twice and is a potential love interest. Beyond a handful of chapters she's hardly mentioned anywhere else. It feels like the author is introducing more varied perspectives because it fills up the page, not because they're necessary to progress the story.

Another thing that bothers me is the slight Lolicon undertones. Thankfully it's rare and short-lived but for a small while the main character really wanted to know one of the girls' underwear color. I get the author was trying to make it funny but it just came out awkward and cringe-worthy. Also it feels like the author spends more time describing the child characters than the other characters. It has happened enough times where I wish no more child characters show up. It's just uncomfortable reading the main character's interactions with children so I tend to skim those parts.

There are a few other things but those two are my main complaints. If you want to kill time and don't care about character development (because the characters are definitely flat and easy to predict) then it's a pretty good light novel. The writing quality has started to drop recently so I'm a little worried it will continually get worse. Something to keep in mind. <<less

It would have possibly been a 2.5 instead of 2 but the flashbacks killed it for me.

The main reason is because the MC is literally mowing through the levels, and the reason being because he is granted power from gods =-= so much for Hell mode.

Note: I dropped this mainly because of the pacing and flash backs, as someone said it's gonna be few hundred chapters before we catch up with present and stop the flash backs lol

Love the way it doesn't only focus on how he gets stronger (which he is), but shows the tidbits of what he'll become later on, as well as how he emotionally connects with it all as other novels may not really emphasize.

Though may take awhile to get to, its a little slow pace with a little bit of funny parts, especially with translator, but its picking up pace.

Wow, so good. MC is interesting, there is a good mix of serious and funny parts. There is an overall plotline and it is good at giving you a little bit of it at time. There is a heavy does of RPG to it, so you will have to at least sort of like that kind of thing. Normally I hate switching viewpoints, but it keeps it to a minimum, and uses it properly to foreshadow some things that will happen, rather than split the novel into an obnoxious series... more>> of short stories. The only gripe is his leveling is a bit slow, I can only guess that either this is going to be a really long series for a Korean novel, or there will not be much of an outside the tutorial arc. <<less

Edit:

As of now, what I said bellow still hold to be trough most of the time, tough the story turn out to be somewhat boring, the set up of the tutorial is one that makes one of the hardest plots for authors I think, it's the loner theme witch it's challenging to keep the reader interested, not surprisingly the author fail to hook me anymore, especially that I can foresee that the MC will keep to be alone for far more time, and even when that ends, it's clear that... more>> he will have only one companion, the only ones that he communicates with, are some random people at the community chat witch I can't remember their names, and some uninteresting manger rabbit, and finally some indirect communications with gods witch is the top most hated styles for me as it always tend to be ridiculous, witch is always complain or curses toward being that holds your fate. Conclusion, it's not a diamond as I though the writing is good but the story is bad.

Original :

I just have to rush back to say this, I have only read 5 chapters so fare I have already have few things to say. First the author is apparently superior, well versed in his writing, he deliver the informations efficiently without wasting your time nor letting anything confusing, I feel impressed, the second thing that I note is that is everything is very well explained without letting any knot that might stress you out, unlike what some comment say, for example the passage between the past and the present is clear and the timing is well picked. Also the fact another person choose the difficulty hell, is demonstrated that you want find yourself questioning it in the first place. I have to say all these because I won't you miss this diamond like I almost did because of some comments, well it's so early to say it's a diamond but based on my experience on jewelry, I have high expectations, I'm gonna come back to confirm or deny my claims later. <<less

Great novel with interesting characters and setting. My only complaint is that the MC scales faster than the tutorial. There's no point in having so many chapters per level if he can clear it on his first run with bare minimum difficulty. Currently it's not like that but it feels like it could head into that direction.

Nothing really novel but somewhat interesting story idea with enough content for 100-150 chapters. The rest of the 430+ chapters has to be skip-read.

Some parts are exciting and some even great but due to too much pseudo philosophical drivel and boring parts it gets only three stars from me.

This novel should be a 3.0/5.0 novel, but the ending of this novel is absolutely terrible to the point that the only reason I don't give it 1.0/5.0 is because I only give that note for the absolute garbage as a whole, is an end at the level of Game of Thrones who made people hate the series that they loved, and after the end of the story it came the sidestories with a second ending... Which is also utter garbage, seriously those endings are revolting, is by far the... more>> worst novel ending I have ever read and I fcking read a sh*t ton of novels.

So if you don't care about a garbage ending and is more about the process maybe you can enjoy this novel, there's not much to say about it, is just a guy struggling to climb a tower and becoming overpower. <<less

This series was interesting. It tried and succeeded to give ou a slow burn of MC and his struggles as he goes through the "tutorial." Now, that falls apart when

Spoiler

You leave the flashback chapters and go to the main time, in which he is trapped on level 60 due to needing 2 people to progress despite the fact that he is stronger than most gods at that time. Gods that are shown to be able to warp through the tutorial world and things of that nature. So he is stuck there how? He mentions he can rip out of the system whenever as well I believe, leading to an inevitable confusion on my part

[collapse]

and as of where I am now,

Spoiler

he still has not left the tutorial so idk, asspull KN plot of him becoming op dragon god fun fun plot armor cheese the last bit and half a chapter? Cause that is where we are heading and failing to stick the landing/ending is a running gag of KN,

[collapse]

so to say I was unimpressed and unmotivated is not far off.

Hard to really give a solid reason why, the middle just takes a very different direction from the beginning I would say.

This novel is a masterpiece lost by time. Its not your typical overpowered main character who demolishes all obstacles. This main character suffers, and grows by overcoming suffering. But they remain changed, permanently scarred by the trauma they have endured. This novel is the perfect counter to all those tr*shy stories where the main character has it way too easy and is given powers for doing nothing. This main character earns their power by recklessly gambling with their life and winning.

Light Novel Bastion has re-uploaded the story and they messed... more>> up their copy pasting. Use Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to read the original translation before it was re-uploaded. Otherwise some sentences and paragraphs will cut off and are missing. <<less

There are three parts to this. The past, the present and the future. The past itself is actually pretty interesting if more than a little edgy. The main character is the type which suffers and struggles to make progress and those struggles pay off. Over time, the tutorial itself become less of a threat but it remains interesting because of how the MC's obsession with improving himself which was originally born of neccessity winds up driving him towards making things harder for himself. His life is no longer neccessarily at... more>> risk while clearing floors later on but that itself is largely because of the measures he goes to to push himself to become stronger. You can say what you want about him, but by the end of it his strength is the earned result of borderline masochistic tendencies. The way he gained his strength is pretty well justified story wise and doesn't just feel like some magical mcguffin is thrown at him.

As for the present... Okay, so I have two thoughts on this. Firstly, the girl being an olympian is a big plot contrivance but I don't really care. I personally feel like this is a minor issue which people are confusing for the major ones which are occurring in the present which is simple honestly. So with that, onto the second thought. We're given a very summarised version of someone else clearing the floors below him. He's doing what are essentially fetch quests without any significant difficulty. The closest thing he's running into which could be considered a real problem is his lack of interpersonal ability. If you haven't guessed what my second thought is by now, then allow me to summarise. IT LACKS TENSION! What is happening in the present never really feels tense or exciting. There are occassionally interesting things which occur but for the most part you're not in the moment but instead you're watching someone who has been trapped there for a long time do stuff in his cage. This is the problem. The plot contrivance is a significantly lesser issue to this in my mind. Even if she'd been struggling in the same way as the MC had to to climb floors this part would be no more interesting in most senses.

Now... The future. I don't think the author really knew what to do with it and it shows. The tension has kind of evapporated completely at this point.
Spoiler

That's the thing about the MC being a god at this point. There's not really a lot which can actually challenge him here.

[collapse]
As a result things just go downhill fast and quite honestly, I kind of stopped caring.

Thankfully most of the novel is set in the past rather than the present or future because it is by far the most enjoyable aspect of the novel. Both the present and the future could have been decent if the other characters had been interesting as, well... Characters but they're not really. They're actually rather bland to be honest and I kind of wish that weren't so as it would have made both of these sections a lot more interesting. Unfortunately they are and so these sections are not. <<less

I really dont understand how this getted 4/5, tutorial too hard, too hard to read;DI dropped this more than year ago and now tryed read a little more, maybe story became a little better, but nope. So what we get here we get jumps in time, written by author bettween current situation and his memories how he walkthrough this trials, sometimes even change the pov to anothers characters and not even says, who is this. So after 54 chaps I became really bored, and just look for toc with some... more>> hope, but what we get?Trials, jumpings in time, he get out from dungeon that 10-20chaps of freedom and conclusion another 20+ chaps thats all, to read fully this novel a real torture and the end you didnt get anything dont reccomend <<less

Novel is really good, level above many novels but I dropped it early.

Novel start at him be at floor 60 alone, waiting for coop partner. Then authors tells the story how got to floor 60 and that's the problem due him being at floor 60 alive that remove the fear of death and him being alone thats tells us everyone will die till he goes after floor 61 so it is too boring.

Chapter length is bit short.

Hence dropped.

Honestly really enjoyed the first half of the novel. The whole dungeon crawl was pretty interesting, but it really starts to lose steam after he finally escapes the tutorial. The biggest problem is the MC has no actual goal, at first it's simply survival, then it's escape and that's it, the only other motivation he has is a very weak promise with a character that feels kinds irrelevant towards the end and a stubborn hatred of losing that just makes the MC feel oddly immature.

All in all, suffers from an... more>> underdeveloped MC with no solid motivation. <<less

Amazing story and wondeful series, character dev. Is come from unexpectedly way. It's not your normal series where MC have happy story or satisfaction ending, neither it's have sad story alike. The type of series that has its own uniqueness, You will found it something like this is scarce.

But autrhor seems like put cliffhanger, even in late game tought w( ̄△ ̄;)w!

One of my worst reading experience.

The plot regularly jumps from present to past. Viewpoints shift from characters without a warning or indication as to whom speaking\ thinking.

Then there are the trope of the genre and Korean tropes in general, which both are not worth mentioning.

There is honestly not one redeeming quality to this novel, but if you insist to read it, I'd recommend the comic. At least up to where it currently is, it's better told than the novel.

It's okay. But decided to stop reading because he's getting too much stronger to the point that he wont meet his match at all. He's not only 2x stronger but 4x or even 10x at the middle of the series. That's where you starts to get bored and read a 1 sided match all the time. And after accidentally reading some spoiler from forum site damn I'm really 100% sure to stop reading this novel. That spoiler killed the novel and fack that!
