I starting reading this expecting a funny romcom and slice-of life... What I got was just slice-of life. The novel up to now is not funny at all, and the characters' personalities are bland as hell. When I read the summary I was expecting either 1) silly comedy like Seto no Hanayome or 2) complex, messy family politics like a Taiwanese drama but there isn't any hilarious or exciting stuff going on at all. Maybe it gets better later but... eh, that's one heck of a slow start, so I'm... more>> dropping this. <<less

First, a small warning: if you like romance where tsundere is the female lead, then my rating will not apply to you, because that is the best part of the novel, but tsundere isn't my "dish, " as Chinese would say, so my score is lower. In that case, the rating would be at least 3 stars.

This is a very generic novel. It's acceptable to a degree because of the comedic tone (comedies don't need to be deep, after all), but the harem is too half-assed for me to appreciate... more>> it (yes, I came for harem/romance, and I was disappointed). I really, really wanted to keep reading coz it's not really long for a Chinese novel (relatively), but it's too dull except for the tsundere thing. Let me go over this novel point by point: setting, plot, characters, translation, and some points other reviewers made.

First, the setting. It's a very generic modern cultivation where cultivators hide from the public eye. There are a few fresh (well, more like unusual rather than original) points, such as human cultivators not being the dominating type, but the setting isn't really deep anyway. It's pretty lackluster, in fact. For example, "dragon cultivators" can technically transform into dragons, but it costs them a lot, and they always walk around and fight in a human form. What's the point, then?

Next, the plot. Perhaps due to comedic undertone, or because the main focus is romance, it isn't really complicated or deep. In fact, plot advances really slowly in this novel, and the relationships develop so slowly a turtle may score all four bases with another turtle from the other side of a sea first before something actually happens. This is a big minus because plot feels like a background for developing ships, but they don't grow, so what's the point. Friends play little role except those in cultivation society, while enemies are often recurring and s*upidly easily dealt with, which would be inexcusable if not for the comedic tone. Also, it's kind of hard to care about the plot because the slow progress in relationships makes me really impatient.

Next, the characters, starting with the protagonist. He's a really dull character. I mean, he's kind of likable (calm, kind, tough when it counts), but he's also shy and incredibly passive in relationships. He's basically a Japanese romance/harem protagonist pretending to be a Chinese cultivation protagonist. I can't overemphasize the word "pretending, " because he's actually very shy yet pretending not to. It's really annoying when I read 5/8 of the novel and none of the relationship really started. In fact, the protagonist only scored the first base (or was kissing the second base?), and not even with all harem members. If you ask me, this novel shouldn't be a harem, but a normal romance with just one ship (or only one ship that sails in the end). Other than the female lead, all other love interests can be easily replaced by other characters who aren't love interests at all, and the novel wouldn't really lose much, because the said love interests are too poorly and boringly written.

Speaking of the harem, the best character is, ironically (because I'm not into it), the tsundere. By that I mean that she has the most depth of all female characters in the novel, that is the author put the most effort into her (even more than into the protagonist, I think, which is rare in CN novels). Sadly, however, she perfectly fits the "violent tsundere" stereotype, which makes her one of the most hateful stereotypical love interests to me. Despite that, I can't help but appreciate how great a job the author has done on developing her feelings for the protagonist from hate to love. I don't like her, but I can't help but objectively appreciate the ship she constitutes with the protagonist.

The other love interests are really dull (I'll toss a few words into a spoiler below this paragraph) in comparison, even though they are more likable to me (with one exception). On the other hand, just like I had already said, the relationships the protagonist has with them are going nowhere. He really doesn't need to do much to get them, but no, he's just passive 24/7. It feels like he doesn't really care. At least some of them are supposed to be his motivation, but it doesn't feel like that at all. Overall, it feels like the author himself has some secondary-school-level vision of romance because the characters in question (the protagonist included) act like they're 13-14 years old with their dull romance, even though they are 18-19 and older in some cases.

Spoiler

So, speaking of love interests, the second after the tsundere is MC's classmate. She's an exemplary student, kind girl, childhood friend, and so on. However, she's pretty dull overall, she's just as passive as the protagonist, and while she's supposed to be the main competitor of the tsundere, she doesn't really feel like one. Then we've got the teacher/inspector woman, who's the typical cold, indifferent woman merged with cultivation maniac. She's really annoying because she keeps on screwing the protagonist over, and while the author bothered to make up one or two cute points for her, she would be a nobody without her beauty (as a character). The twins aren't better, because they are mostly just screwing around, and you can barely tell if they are actually interested in the protagonist or not, yet they are the most proactive characters out of ALL the characters in the novel (of course, the protagonist clumsily evades their advances). Other than their liveliness, they don't really matter, either.

[collapse]

Of the other characters, those random friends and most of schoolmates don't really amount to anything much. After that, we have the protagonist's spirit beast that works mostly as comedic and plot device, a bunch of enemies of varying importance, and finally the family of the protagonist and that of the tsundere, who are the only secondary characters that actually feel important for the novel. The author put some effort at least into the parents of the main ship, plus the grandma. They actually do feel important for the plot and the novel itself.

The translation and the editing are okay. There are occasional mistakes, but the only thing the editor doesn't know is dialogue tags, which 90% of amateur translators don't get anyway, so you can see them in most stories, whether on Webnovel or elsewhere. The only thing I don't like is that we get too much pinyin. This applies firstly to cultivation terms (such names of meridians or acupoints, or cultivation realm names), and I don't like it because it gets too confusing and difficult to remember, and secondly to titles (such as gongzi, little zhumu, big zhumu). Gongzi I still understand (young master), I also get the one that means son-in-law (fuma or whatever), but zhumu is beyond me (I guess it means madam or something, as in mrs.). I think it'd be better to translate such terms because it's not like you can't translate them into English. Too much pinyin just makes it confusing. Chinese webnovels aren't like anime where everyone knows what tsundere, onii-chan, X-san, sensei and so on mean.

So, to summarize, it's a mediocre novel, but if you want to read a slow-paced romance/harem where the main female lead is a tsundere, go for it. This is the only good part of the novel, and I only scored it low because tsundere isn't my thing.

Now, to end, let me address some criticism and such that other reviewers made:

    • The female lead is overly sexualized for a young girl - I think people who think this have gone to boys-only school. The FL is 14-15 years old, which is pretty much when girls start to look like young women - at least in Europe where I live. Some even earlier, especially if they put effort in their appearance (makeup, clothes), and anyone who knows something about teen girls should know that they have a ton of interest in their appearance, and you can see 13-14 years old girls trying to wear sexy dresses and such. Besides, the protagonist isn't that much older than her (he's 18-19 while she's 14-15), so it's kind of reasonable if he sees some emerging feminity in her. The only part I agree the author has overdone is that the author lets his foot fetish show a few times, and it's somewhat awkward (and in bad taste) when he sexualizes that teenager's feet...
    • The primary, secondary wives concept - the only ones in the first 500 chapters who are okay with this are the female lead's parents and one love interest's master, as well as male lead's grandma. Let me remind everyone that having concubines (polygamy) was still legal until 1911 in China, and was de facto a very common situation before 1950. In Hongkong, it was only in 1970s when polygamy got outlawed at last, I think. So, those characters who are all old or part of older, traditional society (cultivators who live centuries) may find it normal. Notice that some characters (such as the protagonist's parents) don't really realize the MC is going to pick more than one girl, and are shipping only one with him. The only idiot who deserves a beating is the protagonist himself as he is as dense as event horizon among all this, and he doesn't get it at all when others are making allusions to his future polygamous relationship (he's pretty much being allowed to have multiple women, but MC is like, eh what the heck they talkin bout)
Shitty female lead - this is, again, wrong. She's a teenager 14-15 years old, it's perfectly normal for her emotions to be chaotic and as a result her actions. Anyone who has a daughter or a sister should know (though it does vary from girl to girl). Besides, she's really in an unpleasant (for her) situation. Imagine that the country made some mistake with your ID, and now you have to marry a fat, ugly woman 20 years older than you and imp**gnate her. Sounds fun? Not enough? Then replace it with a fat, ugly, dirty drunkard. How about now? Of course it isn't as bad for her, but not much better. Her behavior is completely understandable, and it's really cute how she develops feelings for the protagonist.

The true problem with her is that the protagonist just indulges her violent, unreasonable behavior. He's the one who should give her a spanking or otherwise punish her and make her learn how to behave. If he could handle her properly, she wouldn't come off as half as bad, or even quarter as bad. Of course, that also reflects the author's mistake in not developing her properly as a character.

On the other hand, everyone totally has the right to hate on her for being an unreasonable, violent, annoying little wench. In fact, I also do. I only appreciate that she's written very well as a tsundere. It's just a pity she didn't grow up from this.

    • MC is s*upid and others fix problems for him - this is true. MC is smart and has some good moves, but he also makes silly mistakes and takes unnecessary risks, after which powerful backers will wipe his ass for him (sometimes not even intentionally). In some cases, it's fun, but in others, it's just cringe and you start feeling bad for the antagonist when he's hit by a triple consecutive combo of shitty luck...
    • MC is masochistic - I wouldn't really go that far, but he's indeed way too passive when he's taking sh*t from love interests. It's not just the tsundere, but also the cold woman who sets him up repeatedly and the twins who keep on playing pranks on him. He honestly should man up and return the favor. Otherwise, he just stays passive and doesn't feel like a good harem protagonist at all.

It feels like the author had some major rejections in his lonely teenage years. We won't even talk about the sexualization of a young girl, but even ignoring that the rest of the love interests are so bland and have no real depth to them they almost feel like outlets for his own fetishes. The MC is such a wimp he can't even choose between any of them then the author starts introducing the concept of primary and secondary wives which killed the webnovel for me. All of the other... more>> characters are somehow fine with it even though there's no one else that was even said to have done it. The love rivalries was really the only thing that kept me going, but if you're gonna forecast it that early that he's going to marry all of them what's the point.

I gave it 2 since the writing itself was quite pleasant to read compared to other webnovels out there, but the lackluster characters really holds it back. I just think there's way better alternatives out there. <<less

A very good read.

You will definitely enjoy this novel. The characters in this novel feels most realistic among all the other novels. In some reviews people are complaining about the FFL but I think that is how teenagers are. There are some problems with the plots but nothing to make a fuss about.

this story is so bad because author put pressure on MC but it's don't follow the world logic at all. There are so many force plot and to drag the story author use unreasonable logic to do it and this restriction and unreasonable demand only apply to MC

Spoiler

there are so many of this s*upid logic throughout the story, one less annoying example is other dragon can't fight dragon inspector but you can fight among inspector but later on when MC has antagonist weakness in his hand he can't use it to suppress the antagonist and he got bully during examination because apparently you can't fight among dragon inspector

another one is taking mystic crystal is a dangerous process according to author but MC gave most suitable one of a kind mystic crystal for third uncle and apparently MC suppose to be grateful because taking this mystic crystal is dangerous and third uncle is sacrificing him self for this. This is so s*upid because taking mystic crystal itself is dangerous process.

Wooo, a decent and a fun read at last. It's a bit slow on earlier chapter, and less conflict because what did you expect from a novel who has "Slice of Life" tag on it. But honestly I really like this kind of novel, it's just bored with non-stop action.

I kinda like and hate MC's personality though, like it because he's always calm, low profile, stoic and smart. But hate it because he's just too timid at facing on his relationship with the heroines though it get better after he... more>> "tasted" it and completely let loose. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) as for the harem

Spoiler

Zhao Yanzi - she's the Dragon King's daughter, you would definitely hate her on early 500 chapter for reasons. She's extremely childish and rash and sometimes hypocrite (she's still a teen tho). Of course if you watch anime or manga then her personality is Tsundere Violence. But after she experience life and death with one of the harem, she started to appreciate things more and respect them, so she's simply become one of the best heroine in this novel because it's actually her who agree with MC's having harem first.

Xie Yujia - MC's Class Leader and later he found out that she's actually his Childhood Friend/Arranged Marriage at some point, and she also did know about this. Gentle and Graceful. She's definitely my favorite in this novel. Perfect Wife Material.

Liu Linlin & Liu Lili - The Twins from upper realm, they are become MC's maidservant after he released them from punishment in Dragon Palace.

Su Han - MC's class teacher. She's an Inquisitor from Dragon Temple who make a balance between Human Cultivator and Dragon Cultivator. She's a Cold and Stubborn type, but you'll definitely like her. Oh and also she's MC's first time.

*possible harem
Duan Yao - Daughter from the Sect Master of Heavenly Mountain Sect, started as his enemies. MC and their sect are fighting each other which end with Her sect's half destruction. Later their sect sacrifice her as apologies for MC and make her join MC. MC rejected her, and later she's become a disciple of Zhen Fei.

She sacrifice herself for protecting MC from Evil Dragon near end chapter and she's in vegetabled state even after the novel end.

A mix of cultivation novel, slice of life, myths and faction politic in a modern times. The romance are slow burn and could be very frustrating if you don't enjoy harem. The cultivation is quite interesting imho, none of those snap of a finger and I am strong.. Just like the romance it's slow and steady.

Cultivation 4.5/5

it's rather different and paced nicely from many other novel.

... more>> Faction politics, Myth and world building 4/5

I felt like this is the most fun aspect of the series. The many ways the cultivator and mythical creature has adapted to the modern society. For the politics, there is nothing much yet revealed.. Only small hints of bigger scheme or plot running in the BG. It's quite fun to learn along together with the MC as he learns more about the other side of the world.

Slice of life 3/5

Its alright. As of where I have read mostly it's around school life and his bros. Quite typical. The more interesting casts imo are the ones not from his school.

+1in rating just purely on the sweet family interaction the MC has with his own family and with Yanzi family.

Romance 2/5

I hover between 2-3 as I dislike a lot of the potential heroine and I am not into harem. Lastly, The ship I am on board are on express course to jail leaving me feeling mixed about the whole thing. Some spoiler about the pairing..

Spoiler

Personally, I enjoyed reading this albeit the strange underage pairing which does left me feeling uncomfortable but I chose to think of her as high school student instead as it's easier on my sanity level. So after closing my eyes to reality, their interaction are really cute and comedic.

Contrary to another reviewer, I dislike the childhood friend as her action left me feeling disgusted or too pure to be real. Her action that left things ambiguous also gave me goosebumps. Sometime I felt she is rather stalkerish or yandere material in the making.. But it's just a personal feeling.

[collapse]

Overall 3.5/5

Not really a must read but enjoyable to read when you have time to burn in between of travelling. <<less

Decent read

First 600 chapters were slow paced compared to last 150+ chapters which were rushed. Too many new characters were introduced at the end. Action, fighting and leveling up of MC at the end was forced.

Anyway MC isn't bland, harem characters are unique with intriguing personalities. Good read as modern slice of life genre.

Recommended for those bored with your average chinese novels.

A fairly commonly progressing plot, but the characters are so different from the average harem wuxia or xianxia. There are plenty of slice of life bits, with, IMO, seinen/josei style writing. Would be suitable for a rom-com manhua. A good read, but maybe wait for more chapters so the plot can develop further, and capture the reader better.

This novel is just another Xianxia tr*sh that you would pick up when you're bored. To be honest the start. Was good, if you ignore the repetitive aspects of it.

The biggest problem I have is the dynamics between Hao Ren (MC) and Zhao Yanzi (FL). It feels like the MC is a pedo meanwhile FL is a villain herself. Currently at chapter 532 and I can't help but get mad at Zhao Yanzi for outright bullying Duan Yi which is supposedly the MCs lover in the future based off the... more>> wiki. Somehow Hao Ren is willing to let FL to bully an innocent girl just because she's pretty and isn't willing to forgive her even after stealing all of her stuff to the point she gets beat up by her dad because FL framed her. I honestly can't support the MC and FL because of that. It's too excessive when the author kept reminding us of FL's age and innocence. To me FL deserves to go to hell or atleast get injured after doing the that to Duan Yi, She needs a lesson and instead of being a f*cking chad this story wants the MC to be can't and doesn't want to punish her or atleast call her out. Genuinely MC is a f*cking pedo and whoever wrote this had a boner while writing down the scenes where it was romance between the two. I've just about had enough of the FL No normal 15 year old would be that good in my eyes even if she's pretty and lively.

I swear the f*cker who wrote this jacked off to loli hentai back then and that's why he made an account just for this novel so there's no association with him. Sick f*ck 🤢 <<less

In general, I thought it was a good novel and I enjoyed it, it has adventure, action, slice of life and romance. The story seems good to me and the world is well described at the beginning.

I liked the MC at the beginning, making rational decisions, he is just an ordinary university student, without a girlfriend and who spends his time with video games entering the cultivation world, in which he is the weakest person and without any knowledge.

The secondary characters are nice and one can easily empathize with them,... more>> each one has their own personality and their motivations.

But as the novel progresses, details begin to appear that did not let me enjoy it:

- The MC suddenly becomes s*upid and makes decisions that are clearly going to cause him problems, such as going to steal spiritual herbs from a place where there are many people more powerful than him.

- The power level system becomes confusing when the author compares dragons with demons and humans, on many occasions he contradicts himself.

- Almost all the difficult situations of the MC that were caused by his own bad decisions are solved with the help of another more powerful person who supports him and the worst thing is that he becomes more and more arrogant since he does not suffer any damage or loss.

- The mysteries of the world are not solved in a satisfactory way, there are many questions and elements that seem illogical, for example why the dragons that supposedly won the war remain on Earth, which is the place with the least essence to cultivate and the humans that were the losers moved to the heavens that are much better for cultivation?

I would recommend it to hang out as it is a short story, but don't expect any wonder. <<less

First thing you should know is the MC is a immature naive overly arrogant moron who's borderline ret*rded granted he's a college student so the immature part is understandable. For example he frees a couple of criminals despite them literally reaping what they sow for no reason for people he barley knows and risked his life for them for absolutely no reason and didn't even think about the consequences of his actions. Now let's move onto the FL leads she's a pompous arrogant spoiled brat granted that's understandable since she's... more>> literally one of the wealthiest people alive and heir to the dragon clan which might as well be one of the strongest of not the strongest on the planet. That said let's talk about the novel the plot is overall great I have no complains regarding this novels plot since it's quite good for it's time. Now character development it doesn't exist don't think about it they literally barley evolve as people the entire novel which is disappointing since the MC and FL could have become much more than immature moron and a spoiled brat. Now let's talk about the harem they follow stereotypes but if I remember correctly this is a early cultivation novel so I guess they weren't that common back when this came out. Overall a great read if you have nothing to do but be warned the characters can be frustrating at times. <<less

This novel easily surpassed my modest expectations. For a "cultivation" story, it's pretty light-hearted and the good guys have pretty strong plot armours, but it still has some heart-pounding, epic action scenes in the second half. The first half is more slice of life focused. The romances are easily the best I've seen in any Chinese story, with excellent pacing, a surprisingly believable harem development, and most importantly, highly likeable and interesting girls. In fact, not just the harem girls, the major characters generally are more vivid and multi-dimensional than... more>> I'm used to expecting from Chinese stories, I really grew attached to them. The MC is unusual for a cultivation story protagonist: he's highly virtuous, almost never kills, flawed enough to feel human, yet possessing enough attractive qualities for it to be believable for him to be able to attract a harem of beauties. The harem dynamics are very interesting and entertaining; they don't all just instantly get along, but there are also no melodramatic conflicts - the whole picture is complex without being messy. The sweet and intimate scenes are usually very well written, evoking a powerful romantic mood, and the abundant slice of life parts serve both as light entertainment and as a way to get you attached to the characters.

It starts out mediocre, especially in terms of action, but continually improves pretty much throughout the whole story. The only exception is the rushed build-up in the last arc - fortunately, the climax itself is epic and awesome enough to make up for it, so the story doesn't fall flat on its face in the last spurt. I found myself hooked after the first couple hundred chapters, and it wasn't really bad even in the beginning, so it's not like I had to suffer to get to the good part. This story isn't particularly bogged down by clichés, it feels relatively fresh for a cultivation story, though it does have its fair share of common tropes. After some stumbling in the early part, the plot is actually pretty good, and the writing is overall quite skilled. The translation isn't perfect, but it's ok, I have no major complaints.

In conclusion, while the rushed build-up in the last arc is a fairly severe flaw, overall it's still a great story that left me emotional once it ended, both craving more and simultaneously feeling satisfied, because the ending was pretty well executed. While it's not necessarily worth full 5/5 stars, I'd rather rate it 5/5 than 4/5, if deducting just half a star isn't possible. Highly recommended. <<less

Actually decent read though it's getting worse at around 300 chapters~ and finally got ruined in about 600~ chapters in. I actually feel sorry for the author and translators, I can see that they are very rushed in their works. In the last arc I actually have no idea what's going on anymore since there are tons of secret revealings and infodumps while also doing battle that I am not sure who was fighting against who.... The author even forget that the female inspector was supposed to already be reinstated... more>> to lv.4 inspector.

This is actually why I hate long chapters chinese webnovels since they are forced to release chapters daily and tried their best with a lot of nonsense words that didn't actually help building the settings, especially in this kind of action novels just to fill in their daily quota. But then they rushed their writing in the actual contents of the novel when they are forced to end it.

If the author wasn't working for this type of webnovel work and he/she was able to slowly write a quality story like every other normal novelists, without being forced or rushed, this would probably be a masterpiece but alas. <<less

Another tr*sh novel from China.

The main protagonist is similar to a Japanese spineless good guy. He's also a masochist, and likes to be abused by the awful dragon King's daughter.

He's s*upid and won't kill an enemy no matter what. Even if those enemies try to kill him and his family, he just lets them go and cause endless future troubles.

The plot is forced and full of plot holes. It's pure ttash.

I gave it a 4 for Su Han and Lu Sisters, I liked their character the most. And honestly they should have been the FL. Overall the series is ok... The last chapter i.e the ending is rushed as fk. Like literally some CN authors out there have like a 11, 000 chapter novels with a sh*t ass story, this one had a good potential but the author fked it up. Read it if you like slow romance like really slow (It only happens in 700-790) and good story, neat... more>> characters except for the first and second female lead. They get good at the ending tho <<less

The slice of life tag is strong in this one, but I really like this approach. Other novels focus on cultivating and fighting etc.

This one focuses more on Hao Rens daily life/romance and relationship issues etc. Although in the later chapters it shifts more and more to cultivation/fighting, but it never forgets its roots.

I loved his daily life and enjoyed how "the cultivation world" changed him little by little and made an impact on his life.

His whole situation is very interesting and made the slice of life part even more... more>> enjoyable.

Regardless, there are some issues I have to address.

Spoiler

His fiance is a 15 year old girl, but she behaves like someone from a kindergarten (6 years old). She also isn't very likable. Although she changed in the later chapters to some degree, she has almost no depth to her personality.

Hao Rens childhood friend is in a totally different league though. She has much more personality. After you learn more about her, his fiance felt more and more bland.

The novel started out great. Pretty light, without any "uncomfortable feelings", but there were a few drama parts, which I didn't like in the later chapters. For example, a girl in love with Hao Ren was waiting for him her entire life. She even had a special lifestyle, because she wanted him to be attracted to her, but out of nowhere she wanted to move to her parents (they live in the USA) all of a sudden. She thought, he doesn't like her, because there were some awkward vibes between them. This whole story with her, beginning at the "awkward vibes part" didn't feel good.

This felt too forced/extreme and also somehow out of character. It wasn't coherent with their personalities.
