The Special Investigations Unit is a covert organisation that no-one in the city knows about, dedicated to investigating bizarre occurrences beyond the comprehension of the living.

The Chief Zhao Yunlan isn’t a simple guy either, being the inheritor of the Guardian Order, he has always been a righteous conformist, excelling between realms of the living and the dead.

While investigating a school su*cide case, Zhao is attracted to the calm and reserved Professor Shen Wei, but the Professor seems to be rather fickle towards him…

I really enjoyed this novel. The premise was really interesting plus the interactions with the main leads were engaging. The comedic moments in the novel were also a plus.

First, let me start off by saying:

ALL YOU b*tchES WHO ARE HATING ON ZHU ARE ANNOYING TOO!!!!!

I love Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, but if we are going to bash a character based on their flaws, then you b*tches cheering for either or both of the main characters are just as biased, s*upid, and annoying!!

Let's start with Shen Wei: ... more>>
Spoiler

This dude hates himself for a good reason! You hypocrites out there are going "uwu, shen wei baby, no, you are precious" are literally turning a blind eye to ALL his RED FLAGS. Yeah, there is totally something so romantic about setting up and luring your lover to die with you. Even when Zhu proved all you s*upid people wrong in the story, you guys are still going "🥺 omg, uwu, so romantic." Please, get the f*ck out of here with that nonsense. Not only that, let's not forget that it WASN'T Zhao Yunlan who set Shen Wei off. It was Kunlun who made him finally cracked his professor shell. You could argue with me that they are the same person and stuff, but if Zhao Yunlan never reconnected with his Kunlun memories, Shen Wei wouldn't be as desperate for Zhao Yunlan and gambled with Zhao Yunlan's life. And, let's not even begin with the stalking. Come back to me when you also fall in love with your stalker. He and Edward Cullen should be locked up for their obsession.

[collapse]

Now for Zhao Yunlan:
Spoiler

Intelligent, cunning, but royally shallow and spoiled. If Shen Wei was an average looking person this horndog would never look at Shen Wei just like he wouldn't toward Zhu. Even after learning that he "forgot" to erase the professor's memories, he still didn't do it after the professor technically had no connection with them anymore except for coincidentally appearing in the same location. In reality, he is on par with Kanye West kind of arrogance. How is that something worth praising? Do you not see the clownery Kanye does and say sometime? Kunlun may shared some of Zhao Yunlan's traits, but Kunlun was definitely more mature and wiser than a Kanye West knockoff like Zhao Yunlan. This guy is selfish and is not considerate enough to his employees either. The bickerings may be funny to watch/read, but the amount of disrespect they get is worth quitting and suing for.

[collapse]

Unrelated:
Spoiler

Hua Cheng is just as creepy, Lan Wangji is just as creepy, and Wei Wuxian is a mu*derer.

[collapse]

So, f*ck off with your hate on Zhu.

😤😮‍💨

Anyway, I love the story in the end, 5/5, will cry about finishing the story for a few days, and I recommend to give it a read. <<less

sorry, but I didn't like this very much. The plot and all the descriptions of gods, spirits and their relationships are incredibly boring. The plot didn't catch my interest at all, and although I was reading solely for the sake of romance, which is totally my cup of tea, it's not that well-developed, and so, I inevitably found myself disappointed in this danmei. It's simply not to my liking, even though I've heard many great things about it, I don't really agree with them and will not be reading further.

I finished the Guardian a while ago. This isn't my favorite Priest novel, but the writing is still great. There is a lot going on and yet easy to read.

I recommend it if you like fantasy bl novels, it's worth reading! Of course Guardian drama is also very good! It's very similar to the novel (but of course censored).

i loved the novel, I came cuz of shen wei, I fell in love with him even before read the story or watch the drama, only influenced by the arts, like "damnit! This man his so handsome, so i'll give it try" and it's worthy! Well, it's a Priest's work so of course it's perfect.

Overall, pretty good, but not my favorite of Priest's works. Definitely not what I expected going in! A fun cast of characters for sure. I liked that you get some of the backstory and motivations of each character without going too far in depth to the point that it detracts from the main storyline/couple.

I felt that the loose ends were not tied together as well as Priest usually does. The ending felt pretty rushed—the climax and ALL of the (somewhat insufficient) resolution were basically all contained with the very last... more>> chapter. From what I've seen, Priest likes this kind of pacing where the climax occurs very close to the end of the book, but I think it was just not as well done here as in some of her other books, and left me confused. In particular,

Spoiler

it was not clear (at least to me) what was happening with Guo Changcheng that caused the apocalypyse to magically fix itself. It is somewhat explained in the extras, but I feel like the novel should be able to stand on its own without the extras.

[collapse]

And if nitpicking,

Spoiler

There were some random little lines that seemed to be hinting at something, but then didn't really pan out or connect to anything. For example, at some point the ML makes an observation that all the people surrounding MC seem to have one particular thing that they're unnaturally good at or that their life revolves around, so I thought it was hinting that all of the characters had some connection to their past the way that Guo Changcheng does, but in the end Guo Changcheng is still the only one who is special.

[collapse]

Another thing that makes this book 4 stars instead of 5 for me was that it was hard to follow the mythology parts of the story, both in terms of language and content. I thought maybe I was having a hard time just because I am not super familiar with Chinese mythology, but it seems that native readers also had a problem with it, because at the end of the book Priest said she had gotten requests to explain the mythology parts more + which parts were real myths and which ones she made up for the story.

So overall, good read, I definitely don't regret picking up this book, but probably wouldn't read again. <<less

First of all I would like to swear at my own s*upidity and after reading for more than 6 hours I realized that I mistook the MC & ML.

Well the story was good but because of my own mistakes I left at the 40th chapter. The way the story introduced the characters are likely to blame.
Since I didn't complete I couldn't say for sure how will the story end but till the chapter that I had read it was so so.
Be careful not to make dummy mistake like me. 😑

I've watched the drama and I've just finished the book.

They are both very good and there are some differences between the two so it makes it difficult to compare them however both are good individually.

Thank you for translating it =^_^=

I gave this book 5 stars but I feel like some things need to be said about it dspite how much I loved it and the extras.

The reviews explaining how confusing the book is, are not exagerated. This is my 2nd time reading it but so much of it was still confusing, and I have a pretty good handle on how china works.

Spoiler

Specifically Zhao's/Kunlun's memories were a bit confusing, with all the gods and etc. Explaining how the world came to be and how they all died and what it cost and etc.

[collapse]

Granted; for me it did all get wrapped up in a neat little bow by the end, 'thankfully'. So I did understand it by the end. The romance portion was pretty good, I enjoyed it and it actually led me to write fanfiction so I guess it did something right.

I highly recommend you take notes on this story because it is pretty complicated, at least until the end. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed! <<less

Finally read this! I made the mistake of watching the drama (its a disaster) and lost all enthusiasm to read this novel. I am glad I got around to reading it.

The story is slow-paced. A lot of Chinese mythology is explained (boring to some people), but its necessary because our ML and MC ARE mythological beings themselves. I liked MC's character a lot. ML is a shy wolf in sheep's clothing. ML manipulates a lot in the background. I felt bad for the ML. Shen Wei (ML) totally deserves his... more>> HE with MC (Kunlun/Zhao).

The villain hardly has any "screen-time" and thankfully is not annoying. In fact, the villain is pitiful too.

The other members of SIU are well-written. I loved the fat-cat, DaQing. What a tsundere!! lol

A good story. The translation is great. Especially, the last chapters which have been translated by a bunch of people. Thanks a lot guys for finishing the translation. The extras have been translated as well. Not linked for some reason..... <<less

It's so relentlessly mysterious that I got bored of not knowing what's going on and gave up. It's very funny in parts and the supernatural parts are very interesting but the excessive mysteriousness is annoying

Not gonna lie. This novel bored me to death! Which is saying something because I’ve heard such great things about it. But when I sat down to read the execution of storyline didn’t really grab my attention. Plus the distrust between the mains brought me down real quick! I shouldered through it but, man, it was a boring journey.

p.s: the only reason this isn’t 2 stars is because I accidentally cl**ked 3 and I don’t know how to change back!

It's mean of me to rate after such a short amount of chapters, but I can't continue. For one, we were juggled at the start, unsure who was the MC and main pairing. MC and ML so far are basically OP, making it boring. I don't feel emotionally invested in any of the characters. Finally, the first guy who appears would've made a better MC, but he's, like, an idiot, and the MC never fails to reiterate that, which is both rude (because he doesn't even try looking for good... more>> points) and annoying. Like, mate, you're currently thinking with your lower half, and no one's judging you for that.

Overall: disappointing. I don't like any of the characters, the arcs could be written better, and the "humour" isn't funny. That's all. Go for it, though. <<less

The set up is fun, and I really like Zhao Yulan at first but the further I read the more I felt like he was kind of a flat character, especially later when all the big reveals start to happen and he just... doesn't really react to anything. Shen Wei is probably the most complex character of the cast and I thought he was interesting but still wanted more, and he wasn't enough to carry the novel on his own. The side characters were all really underwhelming, they felt really... more>> flat and I had a hard time caring about them.

I really struggled to get to through the novel, the plot is all over the place and there's a series of 'truths' uncovered that are increasingly disjointed, left me feeling confused but also just... completely apathetic.

Even though I only have 5 chapters to finish the novel I haven't been able to motivate myself to read the rest of it.

Overall reading Guardian kind of felt like reading a rough cut or like someone's rough notes of a story and characters. The building blocks are all there but everything feels underdeveloped and rushed. Wouldn't recommend. <<less

Before anything else, let me tell you the novel has nothing to do with the sorry excuse of the drama. Where there was s*upid aliens in the drama, in the novel you'll find ghosts, magic and mythology, which are much better.

Shen Wei... ah Shen Wei, he really broke and then mended my heart. Believe me when I say you won't find any other plot like this ever again imo. MC, ML, side characters, "every" one of them have their own detailed" stories and past. The mystery is great, you learn... more>> lots of things about Chinese mythology! I didn't know what to do with my life when it ended! (I ended up stanned the actor who played Shen Wei.)

MC is soooo shameless and funny. ML is mysterious but such a softie plssssss I'll cry! He made himself into my heart and will stay there for years to come I swear. (shut up he's a cinnamon roll)

Please give this a chance. Especially if you like detailed plot, mysterious characters, action and magic. And fluff and comedy! <<less

This is my first time writing a review here on Novel Updates! I got into Guardian after watching the drama version! I fell in love with it (especially the actors). So I decided to read the novel as well, and dang it is completely different from the drama which I LOVED IT! I love the drama version just for the cast and the main actors Zhu YiLong and Bai Yu~ but the novel is AMAZING!! This is highly recommended, it has good amount of humor in it, the characters are... more>> funny~ the story is written well, and the chemistry between the main characters is just too HOT!! Don’t hesitate! Just start reading if you are iffy about this novel, don’t be! <<less

This novel is one where the past plays such an important role that if you skip the parts with the past you will get so counfused.I love the romance between the leads since the drama didn't really make it obvious but the novel shows such a well placed and mature romance story between the MC and ML that you can't hate it even if you don't like the plot.

Spoiler

I love that the MC is the uke since his personality gives you the idea that he is seme.

Absolutely nothing like the drama, and that's a good thing. It's a delight to read as the MC, Zhao Yunlan, is a shameless flirt that won't let fate/the past/literally anything stop him from getting his man, Shen Wei.

Won't go into too much detail, but know that this has a happy ending, unlike the drama.

100% recommend. Also there have been 70 chapters translated so far, novelupdates is behind.

I came to know about this by the chinese drama with same title. Though there is difference in plotting, drama and novel are interesting it's own way. Drama is detailed and has beautiful actors with extra cases, while novel is more focused on couple's relationship. I find it more and more new to enjoy the story for longer. Lol
