Dont bother reading it... this MCs luck is beyond comprehension, everything changes to his favor the moment he needs something (finding power ups perfectly in time just by doing random stuff and that every time, who needs to plan things right?). For example he charges into a fight with a guy 3 realms above him with no chance of winning and you probably think wtf? he literally jumps into his death... and ofc there are happening things left and right just in time to save his ass etc... (ah yes,... more>> MC not having to think about consequences) happens multiple times.

The power creep is extemely badly written,
Spoiler

the first antagonist literally opresses a whole country just for the next major arc to have stronger guys which are just cannon fodder generals of the neighbor country like wtf? why would they not invade the other countrys with literally several times stronger military power?

[collapse]

And of course every arc has a women he helps for no reason that after will fall in love with him
Spoiler

even tho the story tells he is only interested in the girl from the start so why bother that much establishing a harem?

Not the best wuxia but at least is the best one of the three series (not read the 4th one yet).

MC actually create a new skill on his own (fire nuke) instead of learning the newest super power from some random ancient master's treasure.

World building and plot is average, and no alien world sh*t to confuse you, or make a new rank of level out of nowhere in the few final chapter. Dou Di is the strongest in chapter 1? Still the strongest last chapter.

The story is really slow though.

It is worth reading. The story is slow in the first 200 chapters but it picks up after chapter 300 and after that, there is no stoppage. The cultivation levels are easy to understand and follow and unlike other novels, the author doesn't rushes with the story and cultivation levels.

Overall, enjoyable but could have been better.

The story ends up being good but it follows the classic wuxia formula almost exactly, it did give me some surprises a long the way when:

Spoiler

The Gu Clan ultimately poses no problems for MC and Xun Er to be together, he gets strong enough quickly enough for the people to become accepting of it very quickly. It was just super weird seeing it happen so smoothly in this sort of novel.

[collapse]

The story feels like it was rushed towards the end to reach a conclusion as a lot of story threads were not addressed or somewhat addressed in the last 2 chapters i.e.:

Spoiler

Where'd all the magical beasts go?

Nothing was ever made about MC getting different bloodlines including the Ancient Phoenix Dragon, it was just never mentioned again after the Demon Phoenix Clan just disappears from the story.

What was the point of MC getting the bloodline of the Gu and Yao clan?

Why was the lightning creature introduced in a way that suggests it'd remember MC?

[collapse]

There are more examples but those are the foremost.

I didn't like how the harem was formed: MC rescues several females, sometimes they'll end up following him around for awhile and get stronger after leaving for awhile.

Nothing is ever addressed with their feelings, there are hints at it when each prospective member of the harem meets each other but they just say some pleasant words and then it's dropped.

It is almost an after thought when the last two chapters are trying to tie this up.
Spoiler

They all spend several years apart then he randomly shows up to three of them and brings them with him? It's not clearly explained. Yun Yun, Ya Fei and Fairy Doctor join Xun Er and Cai Lin in the harem, every other female including Qing Lin is never mentioned again.

[collapse]

If you want a story about a person going from nothing to the ultimate, with several hardships a long the way but ultimately a smooth journey with MC always, and I mean always, coming to rescue his friends at the last possible moment then it'll be a good read.

If you want a well thought out story that is finished, there are probably much better options as the ending is framed as it's not the end. <<less

BTTH is The typical cultivation novel... It was nothing out of the ordinary.. just enjoyable for what it was.... This novel stresses on alchemy more than any other novel I have read until now... It can sometimes get booring... It was not a bad novel.. This was my second cultivation novel... So, I had a lot of fun while I read it coz all the cliches were new to me.... It comes to an frustatingly abrupt end... Which forced me to read The Great ruler to know more.... The Donghua... more>> is very cool... Yun Yun is my Fav female lead.... well the novel gives her a very dissapointing storyline and an unknown end... also, His former fiance Nalan yanran lives in regret forever...I have never been a fan of that sort of end for a beauty... This novel does not offer a satisfying end to most female leads... Thats the only point I dont like... It was left as an unknown in this novel where MC invites them and thats it but they were never got mentioned in TGR.. it was so so frustating... but atleast we can come to our own conclusions which we like.. MC is frigging cool.. the best point about this novel... Very popular novel <<less

It's simple, you love cultivation novels or hate them, there is no in between. For those that like alchemy and cultivation novels you don't have to search any more.

This novels plot is kinda a mess. There are so many items, alchemy pills, skills and many other things that come and go, never to be used again. Fights are vividly described and for those who lack imagination there is actually a manhua (Chinese manga) for BTTH, that is how I got hooked on this. The worldbuilding of this novel could be... more>> a bit better.

TL;DR All in all, this novel is an example how cultivation novels should be. It's a classic for sure. <<less

Just another xuanhuan about an unlucky boi who suddenly picks up a ring that changes his life and eventually becomes the most OP person in the world, charming the panties off girls left and right.

Nothing original but nothing unpleasant either. The only surprise was he didn’t end up with a harem large enough to form the United Girls (State) of Xiao Yan.

The best wuxia i've read characters are vibrant and story is well thought out. The only thing I didn't like is that we didn't get enough of the aftermath. I would have loved to see him get married, help his father get powerful so he can run the clan and help his brothers and everyone consolidate power. You know more stuff. Would also love a short about his life as the FLAME EMPEROR in the other realm where the Dou Di's went.

I'll say it's a good read for people who are casual readers and it will be a bad read for people who are smart readers. Well let me give my pros and cons on this novel:

Pros:

  • First 100-200 chapters are good and will make readers hooked to the novel/story
  • MC stayed on being someone who stick to his core values
  • Comedy is fine
  • Harem is also fine
... more>>
Spoiler

Xiao Yan's first wife will be Medusa. And they will have a oh so cute little daughter named Xiao Xiao (the very same person who will be dumped in "The Great Ruler"

[collapse]

Cons:

  • Plot is so highly predictable. Not just predictable. It also repeats.
  • Lucky bastard. Read and you will see what I mean
  • Around chapter 1500+. Read the first 2-3 paragraphs. And you will get what will happen in the chapter. That's how predictable it is.
Welp. Good read for starters. <<less

I quite disagree about the 1-star review and that one who said that this novel is disgusting for 16 y/o above, see this little kid who was probably in his sixteen (Not judging).

I'm seventeen and I found this story is quite enjoyable. Now, I'm not gonna be biased.

The MC have some flaws, some even make me frustrated. For once, his tenderness with the woman who only helped him once, he's simply too kind for some type White lotus girls.
Spoiler

The majority of girls all have flaws, that made me, as a girl, gritted my teeth. The worst is that ex-sect master Yun-girl, she's simply not worth time imo. Then, the ex-fiance, poison girl, the cousin, even numerous disposable female characters.

But there are other girls, like the Snake Queen (My bias), and the Childhood sweetheart (My other bias). those two are not simply there acting like a helpless, angsty, "It's impossible for me, cause I'm too much of a special things" kind of. They actually have nice personality that made me strengthen myself and finished this great story to see which of them the MC will choose.

[collapse]

Spoiler

He chose both. Yay! I can't be more than pleased, at least they got themselves the best man... though they need to share... sigh.

I admit, this novel will have some very boring periods in-between that will make you want to drop it, but believe me. To the end, it will make you reawaken your love for this, and tbh since this is finished already, you can jump the boring periods. I don't understand those 1 stars, at the very least this novel doesn't deserve that much 1-stars, no offense, maybe what they like is more to those like MGA or heck, ATG (Ew).

Now, I also have to say. this novel is not your usual, "MC is weak at the start, run away, the came back extremely strong and then slaughter his way for revenge. Met a strong person from other domain, act like a mysterious A**hole, the strong person is incited and then the faceslapping commenced".

There are many times the MC has to swallow his pride and ran away, but that's only because the other side is an old monster, and everytimes, he'll without a fail gain something from that loss. In another stronger domain, he's not afraid to stay as low as possible unless he needs smth. Unlike those from other majority of ln who are simply too bizzare in quickly posing as a new overlord.

He grows up. That's what I need to tell you.

He grows up from all his hardship. He forgets little grudges and instead befriend his once kinda-opponents, he's not without reason. ofc, disregarding his over-softness towards 'significant girls', he's a very ideal MC even for a girl like me.

He's not all revenge-y type, ofc he's not completely isolated from revenge but he's not overkill kind of "You touch my girl, I'll exterminate your whole clan" or "You insult me, I'll steal your girl and exterminate your whole clan" type, not at all!

He's a hardworking person and made up his shortcomings with hardwork, his talent, his luck and his determination. seriously if I had to rate his determination it will just be slightly below Wang Lin from RI. Though, sometimes the plot just have to wee turn his personality for more spices. *Wince*

Spoiler

Like that one time in the mountain with Yun girl and his accidental making of aphrodisiac = which made the degenerate girl have some 'mixed feeling' that's freaking 'LOVE' for the guy who are more than half her age and her student's ex-fiance. A bit messed up, I tell you. At the very least, Medusa who was unofficially announced herself as 300 y/o in the manhua, never had any kind of relation with him before. but then again, she's a snakewoman which is different from humans.

[collapse]

The story become better to the end, trust me. Although the author seemed to be a bit rushed in the ending, andd cough! He or she seemed to want to focus more on his/her other novels, the ending is rushed *wince*. But hey! it's decent! It's a long ride but it's satisfying nonetheless.

All in all, this is a decent novel. not your usual OP troupe, boys. *rolls my eyes* If you want, you can stick with your MGA or ATG *blegh*. This MC has some morals and treat girls respectfully
Spoiler

aside for some occasional teasing reserved for his wives. And some light jokes to the girls who are more fitted to be his sisters, srsly.

[collapse]
and not a brute who go and seduce every jade-like beauties they found in every turn.

He's also not simply OP TALENTED, who can do any jobs and classes that was thrown to him like he was born with it. Just fighting and Alchemist.

Tbh, amongst Wuxiaworld's novels, this is my favourite one! Alongside, Sovereign Of Three Realms.

Remember, every stories have flaw. boring flaws. plotholes. this one is also the same. But at least better than your average, Weak to FREAKING SO STRONG troupe. Yeah, it deserved 5-stars from me. <<less

The first few hundred chapters are entertaining. However, it gets repetitive. The battles are dragging, the "love story" is blah. The ending is also really... lame. I don't recommend reading it tbh unless you have a lot of time in your hands or if you like the manga and want a deeper story (the manga is more PG-13).

This novel sucks, the author is so lazy to the point that he is not thinking at all when he created conflict, it's more apparent toward the end. Seems like the author only think about the big picture, the arcs, and conclusion, then bulldoze his way through it. There are too many convenient plot triggers that seems to pop-out of nowhere that doesn't confirm with logic nor the world-building in the novel.

Worth reading? Well, this is like 3rd tier novel for me, 1st is must read, 2nd is read when... more>> you ran out of novels. 3rd, when you already read all you want to read and got no suggestions, you can read this <<less

The characters are fun and the author creates a colorful setting, the beginning is a good a read

But after hundreds of chapters of endless repitition the story becomes tedious to read. Logic is absent and everything established in previous chapters gets thrown out the window for new nonsense.

The most annoying aspect is that despite every character shitting themselves over how amazing and talented the MC is... he's really not - he levels up by eating every magic macguffin that falls in his lap, and even then he only levels up... more>> a little, meanwhile every last stooge and his (or her) granddaddy is powering up ten times as much from some bloodline crap. The enemies level up to match the MC like its a video game and if a character is female I garuntee shes gonna be stronger than the MC regardless of how much he levels up; not to mention every single girl is an unparalleled beauty, with a figure that makes men blah blah blah - its nonsense they cant all be unparalleled thats literally a logical fallacy.

The problem is that besides the plotholes this creates, it sort of invalidates all of the MCs work by never making his power that amazing or suprising despite how many times the author repeats those exact words. <<less

The thing that really bothers me is that while the MC is extremely lucky and talented and works himself to the bone to grow in strength, all of that is invalidated by every other character getting free power up after power up to keep them relevant - especially the romance interests, every one of them is perfect and beautiful and so on, and every one of them just pulls infinite power ups right out of their asses with minimal effort - one is from a super clan, another is the... more>> queen of the snake people, another eats treasures that are apparently just everywhere, and another just goes to train in a cave and other peoples power pours into her - they all stay as strong or stronger than the MC even though hes lighting himself on fire and taking magma baths to get stronger - it just starts to make the Mc's struggle seem less significant. <<less

Another generic novel from this author, however I find this one a bit above TGR and WDQK due to the cultivation system used by the MC (the divine fires) and the alchemy.

When reading the story expect a lot of the following:

    • MC shows up to save side characters at the exact moment they are in danger after he closed up for cultivation for a long time
    • A lot of lucky encounters
    • Every single woman described as an extreme beauty has interest in the MC
Overall, this novel is decent, but I would only recommend reading if you haven't found anything else on this site.

I know it is kinda useless review or critizise this novel, since it wouldn't change anything. But I want to express my disappointment. I read its manga first and I think it is not too bad at first, later I feel it is not as interesting as before.

Had to drop my rating to 3 stars, because this story is just... ugh.

I'm a huge fan of the webcomic but the original story itself is too much of a letdown.

This author is great at coming up with storylines, but they're dragged down by (a) extreme wordiness, to the point where you can skim many chapters of the story by reading the first line of each paragraph without missing anything (goes to show you how much filler there is) (b) too much filler between each step of the plot,... more>> (c) unbelievably contrived plot developments with no attempt to make them less eye-rolling, and (c) enemies that CONSTANTLY get away when they should realistically die.

It's still worth reading, though -- there's a good story beneath all the infuriating nonsense. But as you can see from the disparity between the 4/5 and 1/2 star reviews, people have different levels of tolerance for this author's endless BS. <<less

The first initial chapters are alright to draw in the reader, there's a lot of cool interesting ideas that come up but the author never talks about it after the first mention. The only time he talks about a specific point in a fight is when the main character powers up. Also the plot just keeps getting recycled and you can literally see what's gonna happen for 3 chapters and have to slowly read through it just cause the author drags it on probably just for word count. 2/5 would... more>> not recommend. <<less

Nice read. Specially for aspiring teenagers.

It is like harry potter, in which kids are stronger than elders. Kind of s*upid, but hey! Free read!!! Hahah Anyway, story wise, good direction, A somehow cute romance. Feels kinda off because of the world centering around MC.

Besides that, It is nice to read about MC trampling enemy again and again. Not a cunning MC. But more like, everybody around this guy is what makes him stronger. Brash and courageous, an adolescent's dream.

For someone like me that is power-hungry, this is a good read.

I cannot get my self to read from my current chapter until end, because I find it impossible to read after knowing that MC's attainment is not that much. Well, maybe because this was the effect from reading Ieattomatoe's Coiling dragon and stellar transformation, and now currently being translated, Desolate Era.

Generic. That's the best way to describe this novel. Everything that happens in it is what you'd expect from most wuxia novels. At first, this isn't necessarily a bad thing as it's done fairly well. You have your MC being tr*sh at first then rising up, tournaments, auctions, generic cultivation disguised by a "unique method", a grandpa in a ring who teaches him, a haughty ex fiance, etc... While one can complain this is boring, you should pretty much know when you read one of these novels, you're going to... more>> get most of these tropes.

However, it's later on that the generic situation gets too stale. Towards the end of the novel, it's still like most other novels where the MC goes into cultivation retreats for months, then years and comes out a certain amount of levels higher. Gone is the at least somewhat unique story of him traveling around and getting into somewhat interesting situations. It's just, go into a cave somewhere and meditate for 2 years, then come out in the nick of time to save someone.. It gets EXTREMELY repetitive. Happens like 10 or more times in the second half of the novel.

Speaking of saving someone in the nick of time, this got to a be a little ridiculous too. No matter if he hasn't visited a place in years and randomly decided to visit or has been in one of those cultivation retreats, he ALWAYS happens to arrive just in time to stop an attack that's like a foot away from killing someone close to him. This happens MUCH too often. Too the point where I was skimming through the chapters that explained the current plight of whatever friend or lover of his being beat up right before he showed up to save them. When I say it happened too often, I'm not exaggerating. This also happened close to twenty times or so.

There's one thing I want to bring up that personally bothers the heck out of me in these wuxia novels....

WHY IS THE MC A TRANSMIGRATOR FROM EARTH!?!?! There's absolutely no need for this! In the very beginning of the novel, after initially stating this fact, they maybe brought it up one or two more times just to explain why his soul was a little bit stronger than most people. After that? Never brought up again. This happens in a lot of these wuxia novels. I mean.. I'd understand if he ended up in someone else's body, and didn't understand the world he now lived in. It would make sense as thing would need to be explained to him (and us as the readers). However, he was born as a baby in this world. He learned how he grew up just like anyone else who would normally be born in that world. In other words, there's absolutely 0% reason for him to be a transmigrator. I was at least hoping the author would show a scene in the end of him telling his loved ones about it, or maybe this fact helped him in the very end save the world, etc etc. Nope. A completely pointless plot point.

Anyway, I tend to give novels that are completed a higher score than they deserve, but held myself back this time due to one more thing, and that is...

Translation/Editing score ---- 3/5.

For the first 3/4th of the novel, it deserved a flat out 5/5. However, the last 300 or so chapters DRASTICALLY dropped in quality. It wasn't so much the translation it self but the editing. It was absolutely HORRIBLE!!! There are countless words that are just flat out wrong! Not spelled wrong. Just the wrong words in general! This is absolutely littered through out the last 300 chapters or so. Heck, in one chapter, instead of writing Xiao Yan (The main character's name), it was written as Lin Dong!! I mean.. seriously!? Not to mention countless of other times where they mixed up character names, confusing the characters and their genders. Saying him for females, her for males, writing Xiao Yan when it should be Xun Er, etc etc.

Then comes the times where the paragraphs just STOP in mid sentence, as if the translators/editors suddenly got tired of translating that passage. The next paragraph starts underneath it, leaving the readers scratching their heads in frustration, wondering how the first paragraph even ended! We don't even know how many sentences were missing in that gap! Past tense and present tense are absolutely demolished in these last 300 chapters as well, all the way up to the last chapter. Heck, a clan called the Hun clan was being called the Hub clan in the last chapter, countless times!! Really!?

It's obvious that no one bothered to edit these chapters at all, preferring to release three chapters a day, choosing quantity over quality. This has left me extremely disappointed with Wuxiaworld. While they don't have a lot of novels to choose from, they at least always had good quality translation/editing jobs. It seems that era has ended for them though.

This is especially disappointing because I know they actually finished completely translating this novel half a year before releasing the last chapter. That means they had half a year to edit these chapters, yet didn't bother to. They obviously didn't even give them a once over proofread before releasing them. Really leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you're excited to finish a finally complete story only to run into sub-par quality work.

This alone drops the overall rating for this novel from a 4/5 to a 3/5.

TL;DR

If you like generic wuxia stories, this isn't bad necessarily, it's exactly what you'd expect with NO surprises, but be forewarned of an awful or lack of editing job towards the end of the novel. <<less
