A masterpiece or one of novels closest to that, that I've ever read. At some points it gets boring, but don't go dropping it as it would be a real waste. The plot is pretty good and though I'm not really a fan of Harem, I think it was here really nicely done (even though tha MC was a wimp but Mr. MC was here to balance that). The characters are nice (a bit cliche for some) and really funny. The ending is almost perfect and all I have to... more>> say is :" Go read it if you've not already!" <<less

The main character is a fantastic Puppet. He has no personal goals or ambition and just lets himself be controlled by others wills, and rather than working to resolve things that annoy him and drive him to an unhealthy state, he just lets it continue indefinitely.

Really, there's a lot I haven't read yet, but I feel like I can predict the entire plot at this point - and it feels like it will be at least 10 more volumes before this obvious "big plot twist" will be revealed. Heck, I... more>> could even be wrong, but continuing to read past this point is just too painful.

If you want a long predictable shounen where the main character makes steps to get "stronger" while opponents seem to scale perfectly no matter how far it goes, and the main character continues to make the same mistakes never really learning while constantly telling himself to learn... well, then you might still enjoy this.

I sadly, cannot, and want to rant. <<less

A very well written book. If Sun Tzu wrote the Art of Harem, I imagine it would be similar to this novel. This novel has got everything right - and yet, it's missing a soul. It was as complete and well written as my Macro Economics textbook. And just as boring.

Where did it go wrong? Well, to begin with, the Harem, which is the biggest part of the novel. Here is a novel where each one of the Harem members are highlighted, their skills and capabilities all specialized to support... more>> the MC, and not just some forgettable female side character.

And yet, true to real life harem in empires/kingdoms, almost all of them are with MC as a marriage of convenience. There is no romance. Imagine 2 dozen female characters and almost no romance. But don't worry! The MC returns the feelings in kind - he isn't head over heel for any of them either. In fact, in general, the MC treats his female companions as annoying but necessary support in his quest. At the beginning this is forgivable, however as the novel progresses to more than a thousand page, you start wondering if they ever will learn to love each other.

Spoiler

They don't. Or at least, if they do, it is not shown in the novel. Perhaps the first wife and the second one. But the other 23? They are so far remote from love, that when they got married, some of them were so confused as to why they were in the wife line up. And their groom to be, also wondered how a few of these females got roped by his supporters to be his harem member.

[collapse]

Worse, most of them out right hate each other. Talks of assassinating other members shows up in the novel. Factions were formed. This is a novel about a workplace, where everyone is a workforce to be reckoned with, but none of them are friends.
Spoiler

While they maintain a weird peace, their descendants 500 years later went on to kill each other. As any proper real life empire. The novel epilogue fast forwards to 500 years later to one of the only females who is completely devoted to the hero as she is an automaton, who will live for thousands of years with her absolute and unrequited love for her master, taking care of his descendants forever and ever, protecting them from harms way while hoping to raise a descendant that has enough power to one day call out the MC again. Why the MC didnt just marry her is mind boggling to me - considering all the other loveless marriages he has. He probably won't marry an automaton you say? But he married a few non humans, so where is the problem?

[collapse]

Then there are the MC's ancestors, who taught him all their skills. All 7 of them (hence the name sevens). They all have varied history and skills and weird relationship, however, and I don't know if it is the translator or the author, they all have the same speech and commentary pattern. It is so similar, that by the end of the novel, I still don't know their names, or care to know them. None of them seems to have a loving relationship with their wives either, so there is that.

The novel is too long, and has a slice of life style to empire building. The ancestors smartly point out every potential problems in any decision, to the point it really is simply boring. While the MC is not the strongest, the fact that he has so many ancestors supporting him with ease, removes any worry that the MC could possibly ever lose.

I think this novel has the making for a great manga. It has all the ingredients. A Manga would add romance in the form of facial expression, while at the same time likely reduce all the slice of life nonsense that litters too many of its page.

Recommended only if you are bored with an overpowered MC who has too many forgettable harem members. Here is a novel about a not overpowered MC with a cast of memorable harem members. <<less

When you create a character, the character needs to be personalized. This means that the character should have it's own personality, characteristics and so on so that readers know that it is a person.

In great novels, this is done very well. For example in game of thrones and harry potter, each character is distinct, has purpose and you know who they are.

In bad novels, this is done quickly and is inconsistent as the story moves further.

In this novel, the characters are given a gender, name and put in the MC's... more>> harem. Thats all there are to the characters. You might as well replace each of the harem members with a s*x doll and there won't be any difference in your experience of reading this novel.

The most disappointing thing is that the characters who are done well, are the 7 ancestors who die off each volume. <<less

It has been absolutely underwhelming and I'm hanging on by a thread. There have been no positives as of yet, and list of negatives is endless.
    • wimpy indecisive MC
    • characters devoid of personality
    • MC devoid of personality. Even castrated eunuchs would have more personality to them than this guy.
    • bare bones dialogue overshadowed by incessant drivel of MC's ancestors.
    • story lacking any purpose
    • poor world building paired with ambitious political world building makes the whole thing a nonsense. Why would a reader care about political titbits when even the world hasn't been built yet?
    • comedy consists of making the MC appear even more wimpy. He literally keeps on fainting and doesn't even bother to stop it from happening. I ask you, the readers of this review: how many times have you fainted in your lives? If its even once, you'd admit that its not an experience you'd like to have again and again, and you'd probably do something to stop it from happening. The MC does literally nothing.
    • The first potential harem member just tags along with the MC playing the maid-wife role and the MC doesn't even bother to try and understand her situation or her motivation. Later on we're given some shitty excuse like "I watched you MC-sama", as if this sh*t ass wimpy MC is worth watching.
Now don't go telling me it gets better later. A story worth its salt always gets better near the latter portion because thats its climax! But a real good author knows how to keep the reader hooked right from the first page. Either one of the two things is essential for that:

  1. Purpose: the author has to give a clear purpose to the story and the MC. This has to be done in the first few chapters, and this purpose has to be over-arching one that'll last till the very end of the story. Good stories always start with a purpose to them.
OR

2. Crafting the world: The systems and elements that consist of the world should be so interesting that the reader can enjoy figuring it out even if there is a lack of purpose as of yet to the story. Unfortunately in this series neither has been any good. I'll probably try and keep reading for a few more chapters to see if the MC gets more bearable, and if the characters improve from the standard 2d cutouts that they are, but it'll take a miracle for that to happen.

Admittedly, I didn't get very far in the novel. However, the writing style feels fairly slow to me, which alone, I could handle.

However, I couldn't help but feel frustration every chapter after the first few. It felt like this particular event was being forced into the story just as a way to bring the protagonist down. And it honestly got annoying to have the author constantly doing it. It makes no sense and honestly runs counter to the rest of the plot line in my opinion.

Spoiler

The above complaint is about the s*upid [Jewel] and his, frankly inept, ancestors. They have, so far, provided no actual benefit to the protaganist yet drain his magic power just dissing each other like children. They constantly berate him for not doing better while at the same time being the cause for him performing worse and it's honestly annoying how he just takes it instead of leaving the damn thing in a bag or something.

Unfortunately, it's the Japanese attitude of passive retorts and no actual action or just passive complaining that bothers me the most. Several authors are unable to remove this part of their culture from their writing but, in the stories I frequently enjoy, they are able to reduce it or avoid having it be every other sentence.

It would bother me far less if it wasn't that every other sentence is them complaining or talking about something of zero worth. The whole while knowing that it screws over the protagonist. The author has made it clear that they can talk amongst each other without involving his magic or him in the conversation. Yet every time, it devolves into a s*upid shouting match in his head that distracts and fatigues him. Poor writing in my opinion when you make it clear that a situation frustrates a character but never have them work to resolve it, it's against human nature.

OK I give up, I was trying to read it becaues of pretty good reviews but I dont know, somehow this novel doesnt click with me at all. It feels "technically" great, but I just cant get into it.

Characters have depth, goals and work towards them but somehow they are not interesting at all, in 5 volumes I read there wasnt single character I liked or was interested about his/her future.

Both writing and translation is great, never felt it was cringy but the story itself feels dry, not once did... more>> I have that great "I want to know what will happen next" feeling, it felt like reading newspaper.

Anyways I can't really say anything bad about this novel, but at the same time I can't say anything good. It just... is. <<less

I would like to start and say, I know there are a lot of people given this story a 5 star rating but I can't do it and it's disappointing because many parts of this story was good..

The theme of this story is overcoming adversity with your comrades and your lovers. The story does an excellent job of building up camaraderie with the ancestors. It shows the growth of the relationship and learning the skills and the back stories of the heads of the family. A negative at the beginning... more>> is all the unnecessary bickering but I persevered Through that part because I saw the potential.

I really like the different characters the story presented.

One of the issues of why I can't give it 5 stars is because of the absolute fail when it comes to when it comes to the lovers in the story.

All the infighting ruined the camaraderie the theme for the lovers. I understand that not everyone's going to get along all the time however there wasn't really any sense sense of togetherness on the whole. If this was a palace drama then all the one upping would have been OK. If they did this for comic relief it was an epic fail most of the time.

The positives is that every woman in the story has their own personality and their own characteristics. They're not one dimensional.

Lyle proclaimed that these were his women and yet he couldn't even hold their hands or kiss them outside of the use of a skill. He didn't have the Courage to be intimate with them to build a relationship. To have the necessary private moments with each and every one of them. AND I'M Not talking about s*x. I Understand that things being awkward at the beginning of the story but by a certain point in the story that shouldn't be an issue. Him running away from intimacy and his feelings was over the line.

How can you fight on the battlefield and expect your partner to have your back if you can't have important conversations outside of emergencies and crisis.

The author dropped the ball big time.

it would have been better if the story focused on one love interest of interest If he couldn't flush out all the female characters in the story.

The story was so good about Lyle's perseverance in spite of what his family did to him. It was really disappointing for me to see Lyle not being able to be honest about how he feels unless hes not in his right mind.. It was more sad at the end of the story and he was still running from intimacy with the women that he is supposed to have relationships with.

So much so That I stopped reading the epilog out of frustration. <<less

After reading up to v4c64, I can only say that it was a complete waste of time. Some state that things get better later, but I can only say that reading up to that point in hope of the novel getting somewhat interesting is an even greater waste of time.

More details below. No actual spoilers.

Spoiler
  • The author constantly repeats himself.
(Example: Listening to her proposal, Aria refused.
"I'm sorry, I have to refuse."
Aria refused with an apologetic look.)
  • No fantasy in a fantasy world.
(Everything one would be interested in in such a world is boiled down to honourable mentions at best.
Magic, Skills, Races (elves, dwarves), Dungeons, Monsters - a lot of potentially interesting material, and none of it is used. Magical items are the most talked about, but the author tends to just repeat himself, so the end result that you don't actually know much about those either.)
  • Uninteresting protagonist.
(He's one of those uninteresting, weak-minded harem protagonists. He's easily replaceable.
His only saving graces are his spirit guides. His ancestors, who are all interesting in some way, and his
day-long change in personality, which occurs whenever he levels up. There are logical reasons for why he is the way he is, but that doesn't change anything.)
  • Anticlimax and lacking story flow.
(Things just happen - there is no build up, no tension. Just when one would think things are about to explode in a climax, the author either glosses over it like it's no big deal, or it gets resolved 'off-screen'. Sometimes the situations gets a paragraph to itself, but that's about it.)
  • Diverse, likeable, but (debatably) shallow harem members.
(All of the girls are likeable in their own way and are diverse in non-stereotypical way. All of them seem to have a story of their own, but their behaviour doesn't properly reflect that, I think. I'd say this is up to personal preference. These characters are the strongest points of this novel, along with protagonist's ancestors.)
  • Interesting 'spirit guides'
(I've already touched upon it, but I think they deserve a mention of their own, as they really 'carry' the protagonist through the story. One could also argue that without them, there would be room for a much more interesting protagonist, though. In my opinion, the author should have limited their ability to interact with the protagonist, as they completely overshadow him.)

While being a teen he is already one of the strongest 1% or why does he manages to get a record floor level in one of the most famous dungeons?! At least at the beginning of his journey to strength, shouldn't be there other people who are stronger than him? (Besides his sister.) Yes, he has a cheat, but there should at least be some adults who also had a stroke of luck and became powerhouses. In general, the plot feels forced and predictable.

Besides that, many characters are simply bland.... more>> Dumb bcs the story needs them to be dumb. There is rarely a side character that has more than a single personality trait.

This story was tagged as a Seinen before, which was totally misleading. Bcs it's 100% Shounen, for boys below the age of 18. Don't read it if you are older. I understand that I shouldn't rate a story that's simply written for a different audience, but the wrong tagging and the good ratings mislead me to waste a lot of time. <<less

I've given this novel nearly 50 chapters, so far it has been EXTREMELY boring. Recalling what little character development has happened the only thing I can seem to think of is ... more>>
Spoiler

that the main character doesn't have his fiancee brush his teeth for him.

[collapse]
Now, when I say character development I am talking about actual character development, not things like "Oh, he got stronger - character development" I mean maturing and growing as a person.

Spoiler

(Putting this in the spoiler just because it has a few things discussed in the first few chapters) The story goes something like this - Lyle is to be an heir to his families land, however his sister defeats him in a duel thus proving him unfit to take over the house. Lyle than some how or another gets saved by the grounds keeper and given a family heirloom. Lyle sets out on a journey with no real goal in mind; his fiancee forces her way into Lyle's carriage and off they go.. The fiancee is rather devoted to Lyle even though she's suppose to be his ex- due to him being kicked out of the house, meanwhile Lyle is a useless person who often relies far too much on others and never questions people or things.

[collapse]

The main character IMO is what really drags this story down. He is a person, who as other characters in the novel have said, lacks motivation. You would think he would have motivation though, considering his sister is OP and evil and stuff but nope.

Reading should never be thought of as a chore, if it feels like it is than you need to put it down and thus I'm dropping this novel..

On another note, I saw someone mention the beginning of this novel is to shed the naivety of the MC's youth - My response is, if the novel is bland, boring, and irritating in the beginning why waste the time forcing myself to read something in the hopes that it will get better in the later parts.

[Note: Above is my review the first time I tried reading the novel, I'm keeping it as it was my initial impression. I dropped the novel around chapter 48, however I've since come back around to try reading it again. It does in fact get better however that is in 100 or so chapters. The chapters are quite long compared to something like a typical wuxia novel, hence it's quite a chore getting to the good bits. However, the main cast of characters are memorable, the later additions not so much. The story improves as the character grows, though it isn't as dark as I would've liked it is nonetheless a decent story with some darker bits sprinkled here and there. I would say my rating stays the same at 2/5 regardless as the story is average imo, and the intro is just terribly tedious to get through. Though there are some memorable characters and the hook of the story (i.e. The Ancestors) is above average, with such a monotonous and long introduction before it gets good it is just a solid 'Meh' from me though I will be looking forward to finishing this novel be it for a resolution of the story or because of a pride thing.] <<less

It was all good, there was suspense, mystery, action, and romancre. So with this alone it deserves a good rating. Then why did I only give it a 3, simple the MC is so much a pus*y (typical jp MC novel if you ask me). I dont mean him in that way on how he deals his woman, I meant it in a way when someone wants to kill you, I think you would kill them too or at the least make sure that they dont become a threat... more>> in the future right? Wrong he doesnt kill them and even heals them (although accordibg to the MC it was impossible for them to rscape the place alive) but still what if they did somehow, wont you just bring trouble for yourself in the future?

because of said reasons above that I didnt give it 4 or 5, and also I maybe will drop this novel if the MC continues with causing unnecesary possible triouble for himself and the party <<less

It's so bland!

Everything is so average, it's certainly not bad, but it's difficult to get involved with the characters when the MC is so transparent... I thought in the beginning that having his ancestors teach him will make him better in some ways, but no, still the same bland MC.

I like dense main characters, but dense isn't bland, and this one has zero personality.

It may deserve better than a 3, but I disliked the later volumes. Personally love the beginning and middle volumes when Lyle is getting his start, meeting comrades/love interest, and when he goes to the merchant/mercenary city.

Spoiler

I really didn't appreciate the ancestor forcing Lyle to become a King, something he didn't want but had to do because they purposely didn't tell Lyle that in absence of a figurehead to rally people he would have to fulfill that role.

Lyle's goal was just to defeat his sister, and save his country if he could. Not be king, so he could have just created a elite group to assassinate her. I actually made a post about this topic years ago and people argued with me about it how he had to become king, but he really didn't. And he couldn't get away with just killing her as it would cause a continental war.

Lyle's home country is vast and incredibly powerful. Even with his sisters antics and massacring folks that didn't change. Even when Lyle builds a army they admit they wouldn't have much of a chance if his sister hadn't turned the people into s*upid undead on a whim.

This reveals his country was in no jeopardy of losing to any invaders if his sister was killed. And there wouldn't be a civil due to a power vacuum as both the crown prince and the former king and queen were still alive.

The harem is a joke that started well but becomes a gag by the end. New girls that didn't even benefit him really, more than one, and who didn't like or even know Lyle well or at all. And I especially dislike Novem and Miranda towards the end, and if you read the extras you know why. Especially Novem since the author swaps out her personality for a yandere who isn't as supportive or nice as she used to be.

Only good thing about the extras is Lyle finds comfort with Aria and the merchant daughter who he escapes to from his crazy harem in his spare time.

Easily one of my favorite novels to date. One thing I loved is the characters were fleshed out, harem included. The main character starts off weak-willed and naive, but has GREAT character development throughout the story. The relationships between the characters in the introductory chapters are DEEP, more so than you assume when initially starting the series.

Some of the tags might turn people away, mainly the harem tag, but rest assured that this series taking a different approach to its harem. Most harems are relatively friendly with each other and... more>> only get a little jealous, while in this novel it takes a more realistic approach when you gather many girls under one man. Not everyone gets along, which makes for great entertainment. The girls are developed really well and all have very unique personalities, one of the defining attributes of this novel. Plus, the novel has a surprising set of male characters that come from.. An unexpected source.

For me, this is one of those novels you finish and get a little emotional, as their story has come to a close. A novel in which you try to find another novel that matches up, whether its the top tier girls (Monica/Aria best girl) or story.

I can't recommend this novel enough, it might start slow but it certainly picks up. Honestly, ignore the rare low reviews here that have read 5% of this series. If you like a good fantasy novel with great characters and story, this is for you. <<less

Some people rated this webnovel quite low because they hated how most of the male in this novel are scared shyt of their female partner (s), or how boyish or immature the MC was. And how "s*upid" harem characters in it were

Well here some justification.

Spoiler

The MC himself started of as a boy of age 15.. He wont the last battle around 2 years after that.. Only a freaking 2 years... Furthermore, his memories were sealed, and unfortunately he never get it back. As described in the novel, in his early childhood he was a genius, way too sharp and proficient in anything, he could handle everything flawlessly. After his memories were sealed and all his abilities, power and everything were taken from him, he was nothing but baby in 10 years old body.

So what do you expect a 5 years old mind in a 15 years body can do on his own?

[collapse]

He's a boy? Well yep, even a 30 years old guy can be childish, so what do you expect a less than 20 years old boy to behave? In fact, I found his personality way more real than some other novel out there. This is not some wuxia where even a boy in his teenage can go wild and r*pe some country princesses, while making a cool face trying to act mature, way too unreal and showing how childish the author can be.

For the harem.. Well its harem, so it surely gonna be a cliché. If you hate it so much why would you even read it?

At least in this story MC didn't forget anyone in his harem, he even tried to make schedules for them. People who said his harem is shyt must got some really bad eyes and have really bad taste. I dont like the harem too, but some people are being too BS that its laughable.

Future readers, please take at least a glance at the genre or tag. Don't read it if you can't stand harem cliché. Oh and MC is typical Japanese MC because apparently he lost all his memories prior 10 years old. <<less

One of the best novels I have ever read (and I've read hundreds).

The plot, the characters, their development through the story, the screentime and depth of each of the MC's harem members, the MC's reasoning/logic behind his actions - all of these are excellent in the novel.

To point out any flaws, the romance between the MC and his harem could have been more developed, although the author did logically point out it was best for him to make any of them pregnant while he was planning for war.

The MC's growth... more>> throughout the story is satisfying to read.

Again, another typical beta, dense, clueless, undecisive and naive japanese harem series. Except this one dons the tragic emo mask and tries to sprinkle a little anti favor into it, but completely botches it. First of all, this was supposed to be set in medieval setting, but the author instead of doing research just projected way too much japanese culture in it.

Now credit where credit's due, the story is interesting and there is some nice, if slow, buildup of character development that could have been something amazing. Alas, japanese tropes... more>> had to intrude here and makes things way too predictable. Still some decent character development for a japanese novel, even though it's not as good as masterpieces like spice and wolf.

All in all, an enjoyable read, so if dense japanese harems is your thing, go for it, but don't expect something groundbreaking. Do avoid it if you don't like political wrangling and dense beta male leads. <<less
