Rating: 7.5-9/10

It is hard to rate especially when I dropped it so soon. I don't have the patience or fresh memory to review it now, but what made me drop it was the dry wars fought between peoples and lack of interest.

Shortly put, I don't have a problem with slower novels like this one, but I think Mao Ni is overrated. In his novel the world is shrouded in mystery remarkably well, but when people only read this type only in novels by Mao Ni they get so mesmerized by... more>> trying to unravel the secrets that they can't see the true depth of the plot and characters. In Mao Ni the decorations are better than the essence. <<less

Honestly, I'd say this novel does justice to it's overall average rating (4.0 at the time of writing).

It had some pretty goddamn great moments, which were, well, great. Can't say I was a big fan of the conclusion of the big plot nor the execution of the last 15-20% of the novel, at some points, it felt drawn out and I wanted nothing more than to just get it over with. Thankfully, that feeling disappeared, but I still didn't really like it overmuch. This novel is in no way a... more>> masterpiece, but it is different from most other CNs, and thusly, not for everyone. Also, I feel that the author should probably work on the power-creeping, it just felt so completely wrong at times.

Especially after his thousand-year journey into Buddhism

But these are just my 49 cents. <<less

Well, the author's writing style is very unique. If you don't like it, you won't enjoy reading the novel... or you'll grow to like it. I would describe the writing as elegantly detailed. If you don't appreciate this type of writing, then you'll see a lot of info-dumps.

I can't decide whether I like this or Ze Tian Ji better. Both are beautiful and have different types of MCs.

The characters are lovely, and the novel is full of emotions. The romance is deep and emotional. The novel might be slightly confusing,... more>> but it's easy to feel engrossed in it. Overall, the novel isn't predictable. The novel is a deep one. I feel that it's difficult to translate, so props to the translators.

The comedy reminds me of Spirit Blade Mountain, but much more subtle.

Basically, I really love this novel. I am biased, but I completely disagree with the 1 star ratings. Those ratings are probably due to the dense writing style or Qidian. <<less

Ok this novel has an unique way of telling bit by bit the mystery of our MC. It has a solid department of romance, cause they are both are very lovely in their own humble way. The cultivation here is more like a physic power and it is very genuine. The great thing is that it takes a lot of time until the MC can cultivate, while the ongoing story is still very engaging. A better story of ze tian ji in my opinion.. Suprisingly, this is the first time... more>> I read an academy story without getting bored.

This novel is one of the best in my opinion, if not only because the author is taking caligraphy very seriously that sometime it doesnt make sense. <<less

this is a very written story with love and hate and revenge and mystery and the way the author written the story is most the readers stayed to the end even though the story progress rather slowly and the ending wasn't bad even thought it could be better so fellow readers the story is worth the time spend on reading it with low to non-filler chapters

Nightfall has become my favorite book of all time.

I think it deserves more than it's overall score of 4.

... more>> This is my first xianxia novel, and I bemoan the fact that I can't read it in its original language, even if I do know a tiny tiny bit of Mandarin.

A lot of reviews criticize it's "talky" bits, but I think because it is translated work, we miss a lot of the real meat of the novel, and the purpose and beauty of the "talky" parts.

I appreciate the work of the translators. I'm super grateful for their hard work, but I hope a good editor picks it up since much of the flow and appreciation of the novel can be interrupted by things like grammar and diction.

From start to finish, I was drawn into the story and invested in what happens to the characters, main or supporting, because the author makes each so valuable in her/his own way.

Ning Que may seem "distasteful" in the beginning, but as you read on, you would realize the reason, purpose, and even benefit of his being an anti-hero.

Anyway, I am so happy to have found this novel, and I hope Mao Ni decides to write about this world again. I read his author's notes and he said that he believes it is his best work, and I can believe it. <<less

This does take its time at the start, but it never really bored me in any manner. The characters and the moments they shared with each other were enough to offset most of the pacing "issues". There were tidbits of philosophy and politics scattered throughout the novel but they were there in a tolerable amount and didn't really take away much from the novel. Enjoyed it completely.

Worth a read.

Truly unique and one of the best chinese web series I have read. I liked the setting of the world and how it grew. MC was smart in previous life (Nerd with a single mom). In this life his happy childhood is ruined by a tragedy when he was 4. Surviving from the tragedy, he runs far away and finds a little girl, together they try to survive to get his revenge. But his enemy is a grand cultivator at highest state and powerful general in the tang empire. Here... more>> starts the epic journey of our MC to join the ranks of those enigmatic cultivators and finally kill those who killed his family.

The story is captivating, at times it is slow, has philosophical views, good comedy, great cast of characters. The cultivation side isn't that much explained but the action is explained in detail which really helps you visualizing it yourself. The cast of characters is hands down the best you'll ever find, they're well used throughout the story. MC will have twelve senior brothers and sisters who are the best in the world. The headmaster is the strongest and most shameless. The youngest uncle ke haoran (dead in present timeline) was in a class of his own.

Spoiler

Power scale-

Headmaster>Ke Haoran>Abbey dean>Buddha>Eldest brother>Liu Bai>Butcher>Drunkard>Lian sheng>Third sister>Chief Monk>Second brother>Ning que >Middle aged Taoist in zishou abbey

This list is based on power but some characters like ning que can climb to top3 when they use the power of religious faith/ shorten lifspan for power in case of demonic cultivators. I have excluded haotian/sang sang from the list because their power required religious faith which turned to near zero after academy replaced it with new religion. Only ning que and lian sheng didn't break the five states in this list but as explained in the story, you can be as strong without breaking that barrier. It's just you can create your own world with your own rules when you do break it. Middle aged Taoist was the most lame character. Everyone knew he was strong but he likely spent his entire life in zishou abbey so nobody else knew him and he had a boring job of guarding the abbey.

Now Eldest brother is the most talented in cultivation and he had the most potential after he started learning from ning ques habits. His knowledge and comphrension in any given topic is unparalleled except talisman taoism which headmaster was very good at. Given ordinary times he might have surpassed headmaster if he met ning que earlier. Ke Haoran the mad lad is s*upid so he's second.
Nint que is a dumb one in most things that doesn't help him kill grand cultivators and requires more than 11 acupoints opened. So he isn't the best at talisman taoism despite writing talismans capable of killing a character like abbey dean.

I will distinguish the novel in two parts:

Part 1

Marvelous, seven stars. Easily one of -if not the best- read Ive had on this site. The MC is unorthodox, selfish and no hero. The characters are perfectly written, the story is deep and exciting.

Definitely read it if you are in the mood for a smart MC that does not hesitate to kill women or kids to protect his life.

Part 2 (~chapter 450) ... more>>
Spoiler

After the Haotian/Headmaster plot resolves

[collapse]

The story becomes lame. It is only fights after fights. The plot still progresses, but it is focused more on the grande state of things and reads like communist propaganda:
Spoiler

China against the world, the simple farmers uniting, speaking with the voice of the people.

[collapse]
The MC is not as cruel anymore, he even hesitates to kill kids. Shame.

I still give this a 5. If you like "wordy" novels with a deep plot and fresh and unique characters, this is for you. <<less

Good novel with long chapters. But it is DENSE. Definitely not for casual readers. There's action, cultivation and court intrigue. MC uses bow and swords. Also, nobody yells out s*upid move names in the middle of combat. So as you imagine, there's a lot of description with not too many fillers imo, but I would understand why reading this can be a bit of an undertaking. Good novel, nonetheless.

Nice. There were some hohum arcs but it's still a good read. Just be patient. That seems to be the mo op of this author. You wait for the high adrenalin parts then settle for the "moments". I like Ning Que though. His pathetic efforts to get laid are funny as hell. Excellent!

I read it in Thai, which has progressed far more than what Qidian posted. And I have to tell you guys that even at the latest volume, volume 16, in Thai - the story still does not disappoint! (There will be around 40 volumes in total in Thai published version - my money.....)

I really like that this story

and I like how the author makes the MC transmigrated super early, like, ever since he was a baby. So he could not remember much details from his previous life. This world he transmigrated into does not have the Moon at night, yet he remembers it from 'a long, long time ago.' That is a nice touch :)

The actions are super packed and fun. This is such a page-turner! MUST-READ <<less

This is far better than way of choices

I loved every second like outcast and joy of life

It's frustrating that I can't find another novilist like mao ni who takes time and develop a nice plot (has a lot of chapters too), Only novels which I have read that com close are Douluo Dalu, Human Emperor and Gate of God.

Guys any suggestions for a similar novelist and wuxias?

I registered to this website so that I could pay my debt to the author of this awesome story. Mao Ni is the best Chinese Author I have read so far. I read his other books after this one. The language, setup, world, characters are all superb. Each side character can be the main character of another story. All were well built. I have seen some people giving low rates due to MC being castrated at some point in the story. How come you evaluate a story with a single... more>> event. This story would be boring for those looking for constant action because it has slow pace. But as a whole, the story is great. I would definitely recommend it for those looking for a hich quality story. <<less

Just finished reading the entire 6 volumes of Nightfall and it was a terrific read! The plot was well thought out. Dialogues to the point.

The author deserves a gold medal! The storyline is on par with the greatest works of our generation. I bet even Dan Brown would not have done that much research as this author had.

overall. Very good book!
