“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

I find it hilarious that many in the novelupdates community claim that this magnificent piece of prose is one of the typical run of the mill isekai-mmo-fetish-satisfying fantasy of an incumbent author. In fact, it is the best Korean novel that I have read of yet, even going on to rival published books. That's not to say published books have no charm, but this book is significantly more thought out than most of the chinese tr*sh that we read. In fact, it is fair to say that this book is... more>> a blend of east and west; while the storyline is similar to a dystopian novel, there are the traditional confucian values of diligence and filial piety. This makes this book an riveting read, in my opinion.

However, merely existing as a riveting read does not automatically qualify itself for a 4.6-star review, as there are plenty of genuine reasons why this book deserves this score. Let's start off with the good.

Good:

The plot development in The Second Coming of Gluttony/Avarice is unique with many themes similar to One Punch Man, because it's different from the average OP MC story. The story is a non-linear one, starting off with a man dying with regrets and sending only his feelings of regret back in time. This kicks off the butterfly effect, wherein Seol, the MC, is introduced as a complete scumbag that is addicted to gambling. He pulls himself together, and though there are some scenes that seem illogical, it's enthralling enough to omit them.

Throughout the entire novel, it is easy to chart Seol's various stages of growth. He starts off as a manipulative and desperate charity case, to a clueless and innocent adult, to a hardened and battle-tested leader. His pain, happiness, self-doubt, overconfidence, addiction, fear, and ever expanding mindset are explored every bit as much as the world. There are plenty of moral dilemmas that Seol faces, challenging his sense of responsibility, morality and grasp on reality. More often than not, you'll find yourself wondering whether Seol made the right decision in following The Golden Commandment.

In terms of fighting, though there are sudden power jumps, there is enough plot development for the reader to reasonably assume what happened; the author does well in drawing inspiration from DBZ, taking just enough that fight scenes are paced well, training scenes exist, and that Seol's emotions are appropriately portrayed.

The side characters are also unbelievably consistent, as we often see them pop up in the story. They not only reasonably drive the plot forward, but also provide for contrasting views; not every person falls at Seol's feet and cater to his every need. Although they are initially based on archetypes found elsewhere, they slowly reveal their unique characteristics and beliefs.

Bad:

There are a lot of plotholes, especially when there is this shift from the old gambling and alcoholic Seol to the suddenly confident yet shy Seol. Seol struggles with his human vices - addiction and suddenly shifts, becoming is a whole new man. There isn't enough time for us to understand exactly why this 180 degree shift occurred, but I'll chalk it up to the author wanting to skip past the prologue and skip right to the action.

There also is the fact that Seol seems to be able to do things that even the more capable "High-rankers" cannot, and that he doesn't use his ability as much as he should. But eh, it's just a story, and fulfilling these minor gripes would defeat the purpose of reading such a novel with redemption as its central theme. <<less

This is the only novel I've ever considered paying for advance chapters.

Translation (by fudgenouget) is phenomenal.

Loser MC gets roped into going into fantasy alternate dimension where everyone has classes, abilities, and stats.

Becomes less of a loser, gets in a whole lot of shit.

Characters are fun and lively, MC is dense which is both funny and aggravating.

One of the few novels I get goosebumps reading sometimes.

Fantastic and refreshingly different novel, if you liked ‘world of cultivation’ or ‘Avalon of the elements’, I’d highly recommend you give this novel a go, as it gives me the same vibes.

I know everyone has already praised the character development, but I need to repeat it again, because that is perhaps the highlight of the novel. Over 200 chapters, we have gradually got to see the MC evolve from a gambling addict to a hero and it’s been an amazing yet realistic journey.

The author also does an excellent job with... more>> world building, his taken reincarnation, leveling system and harem tropes, and reinvented them, making them feel new and refreshing!

However one negative thing to note, is that around chapter 170 things started feeling a bit ‘Dues-ex-Machina’ like. Hopefully this was only a temporary blimp and things return back on track. <<less

The best book out there in the moment.

I personally think it's a good novel and I don't really mind the plot armor, it's not exagerated and every novel need it so the MC can grow faster.

The MC personality is developing at a good pace so far, except when he is not in tense moments and acts like a teenager.

Why I gave it 3 stars then? Well...

In the last war I honestly think the author forced things a bit too much, like, all of a sudden the MC is on par with Top Level 6 when he's only Level 4, Wtf

"Oh, but he almost died for this"

Almost doesn't mean dead, and we know the MC never dies, I mean, he just got badass and tr*shed himself and 3 months later he's good as new.

I think it doesn't match with what we have seen so far and it's dissapointing.

The problem is the gritty novel soon turns into a relentlessly Deus ex (literally in some cases), shonen-esque piece of cookie cutter BS. The MC or side characters constantly make bad choices and they get bailed out by the fact that the MC always has the lucky item, or luckily meets the right side character that can turn the situation around. Because of this, nobody ever learns any lesson besides 'bring this MC dude along on every recklessly dangerous mission'.

That said, this novel can be a fun, if schlocky, read. 3/5 stars.

PS: Just disregard sersafir's review. The reason companies are willing to invest real world money into the side world is because they can bring back things like new medicines and other magical technology, albeit in limited amounts, which they can use to recoup their investment.

Also, sersafir's points about how one group treats their porter applies to literally one group in the story. That specific group believes in equal share, while most other groups don't. Every group has its own way of doing things, and when multiple groups team up, their leaders have to negotiate the sticking points before the mission.

The point about voting that sersafir brought up was an issue that broke from the negotiated terms, with two people feeling strongly about opposing points that could lead to an exceedingly dangerous but equally rewarding opportunity. So they voted. <<less

Great blend of action with enough SoL to not make the action get dull. Power creep hasn't become an issue yet due to the unique leveling system. Translation is also really well done. Really glad I gave this one a chance.

This is a really good Story, the Author really knows how to write Social Interactions of the Characters. The Protagonist really works hard for his combat prowess and he really struggles in the difficult situation that he is put in

The Time Regression of the Protagonist (Seol) really makes sense as the god in the another world is not omnipotent. It is only the Seol's Feelings that fully came back in time and he is only shown a obscure single dream that the Seol can barely recall. The interactions Seol has in the story can be really childish, but it makes sense, considering the good amount of years of his life in the Normal World is just a repetition of Gambling and Drinking and naturally his relationships with his loved ones is destroyed and Seol really struggles to mend it, and he craves positive relationship with others. So far my only trouble with the story is that when Seol uses his power, but the dialogue does not indicate any of it which causes only some mild confusion as the Author maybe doesn't want it to repeat itself over and over

It's the best-written thing on this site. I have gone here in the past for guilty pleasure reading, for stuff that I knew was cliche and had two-dimensional characters. Not to say this doesn't have web novel tropes in it but it does have originality in it too. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this.

Edit: It had a strong start and here seems to be some actual character development but I just don't really enjoy the themes portrayed in the story. It's can be too dark for my liking... more>> and a lot of people don't really feel human. Still upper tier on NU though. <<less

It's for sure one of the best novel I ever read, and for sure the best ''real'' novel I read, the emotion that it's trasmit to the reader u can firmy touch, not feel or see.

Best. Intro. Ever. Not 1 or 2 chapter trow at only beacouse thay Have to start whit an intro...... a whole friking ark, and it's good! u can't not understand the story, not even if u try. And for sure question like ''why this is appening.... who are this person'' never ever pass in mind

The... more>> lenght of the chapter is soo perfect that I fall in love form the first chapter and the traduction is simply perfet

The only downstar I can find is that u have to pay real money for readind all chapter..... but at the same time I can't call this a real downstar beacouse..... at the end of the day the traslator is a person who spend is time traslating..... <<less

so far this is definitely one of the better written ln/wn novels out there which is a low bar to pass but still an achievement in this day and age.

I dont have any complaints that I can remember, the characters and plot are interesting and we are just really getting started in the story so it remains to be seen if the novel stays good. There are a ton of Korean novels that star off strong and fail about half way through if not a little bit earlier

edit: 3.5... more>> stars

this story has dropped a star and a half for me the MC falls off character wise after around chapter 90, which is where I was when I originally wrote this review. the MC starts acting like a dumb child when around women and considering th is is a harem novel that's frequently. the story is still entertaining but only if you read it in 40-50 chapter chunks. Otherwise you may get annoyed. <<less

Excellent novel with a well developed MC. The MC personal growth, motivations and decision making are perhaps the most relatable and logical in any novel I've read thus far. The action scenes are well written and the world building is acceptable. If you like an action-adventure series with game like elements in another world then its a must read.

Spoiler

I originally disliked the novel due to everything falling into the lap of the MC without any real struggle or personal merit in the tutorial arc. I thought it was undeserved and I almost dropped the fic due to this. However, the author subverted this in the 2nd arc. A poorly though out decision caused the MC a close brush with death. The MC then realized that he's only in a cushy position because he got lucky with a gold badge and his own talents only played a peripheral role. This hardened his resolve to walk a path of personal growth and everything after this was truly earned on his own merit and skill.

It only lost 1 star because of hints of a harem with the princess and his teammate. That's a personal preference for me as I dislike harems. However, if the author subverts this like he did in the above scenario and there's no harem then I'll certainly give it 5 stars.

So far the novel is holding up really well, with a main character that actually has a personality, who interacts with the world around him and simultaneously going through a slow spiritual redemption after ruining his family and life because of his gambling addiction.

The author isn't good at making the reader bond with the side characters, while at the same time he is setting them up in scenarios in which we have to actually feel something for that character beyond "aww, that sucks" for it to properly work.
Spoiler

For example that terribly written drama with Cho Hong which only left me frustrated, and Dylan's death.

[collapse]

The novel does however show, that there is no blind worship or acceptance of the MC, which is a big +

The world isn't very well built as of now, but it does have some interesting elements.

I am hoping that in the next 50 chapters writer steps up his game, because as of now the only really interesting thing is the main character's reason for coming into the another world (and how his future emotions influence him), and that can only captivate me for so long until I get bored and drop it.

No one would send a team to time limited rescue mission with people who are relatives, friends, inexperienced, have mental issues etc. The reason is one: at one point during the rescue mission they become liability. They just can't take pressure or make problems. Let's take Cho Hong for example. She makes problems all the time. MC, he is basically green. Low level, inexperience mentally. They didn't even explain him that there can be situation where they will need to kill his comrades.

Update: 3.5 rating

Pretty good read so far. I just hate the few things that MC does, like forgetting things and assuming s*upid stuff. It's a good read if you like series such as I am Monarch, Reincarnator etc. Plot armor is little obvious when certain action taken by MC isn't reasonable but it's not that bad compared to most novels out there.

As someone said the story is slow though, actions are finished too fast or soon hence the reason for my deduction of 0.5 star from the initial 4 star... more>> rating.

Update: It's dragging a little now, I know the author is building the suspense but I really want to learn more about the girl who dumped him in earlier chapters, I have my suspicion as to who she is or what happened to MC, anyway <<less

I really enjoy the interactions between the characters here. Character growth is fairly large and incredibly interesting to me. And overall I'm really impressed with this novel. It got off to a slow start I think, but lately I've been excited every time a new chapter comes out.

That being said, the game elements of this are really weak and the status pages are confusing. I almost feel the author could just drop the status page completely and I wouldn't miss it at all.

Great second chance story, I recommend it.

Pro

  • MC is changing through the story, and the change is huge from the first chapters. I almost dropped seeing how much an as*hole he was, but fortunately he quickly got better.
  • Fascinating world.
Con

  • Some really one dimensional foes in the beginning.

Edit: I'm really liking this novel so far, the MC is too nice helping everyone that isnt an ass out, but he did get rewarded for it once the tutorial ended, he's not exactly an idiot either so we'll see how the story progresses.

Decent start overall, I'm not a big fan of the translators previous novels, but lets hope this one does much better. Right from the start we learn the MC has a gambling problem due to his ability to see the color green. We also learn that... more>> in the MC's future he turns out to be a person that fought till the very end, and he hopes to use the memories and regrets that hes learned to give the MC in the past a better chance of survival. Therefore from this, we know the MC has done a lot of s*upid sh*t in the past, my hope is the MC will not repeat this again and learns from them.

I don't like how the female recruiter just decides to give him a golden stamp which is like basically handing him a free "I win" card. Just because he told her to give her an invite instead of a contract. If some gambling addict failure tells me that, I'd be suspicious about it, or at most give him a bronze as he refuses to tell her how he found out. On top of that the MC also has a journal that tells him about the future and how to survive it, all this makes the story boring, reinforcing the MC's plot armor. My question here is, how can this kid f*ck up with a future self writing journal, eyes that allows him to avoid danger and know who his allies and enemies are, and future memories.

In the latest chapter, the MC lets a fairly questionable character into his group (selfish and only cares about himself), I'm curious to see what will happen here, is he going to let other people push him around or grow a pair and stand up for himself. <<less

Oookay nothing much to tell from the current chapters right now, but I really feel that this one would become an interesting one due to the fact of the current writing style, pacing and story progression of in the current chapters.

Well the novel is sort of a second chance novel, I said sort of because 'twas only his emotions that was mostly transferred and the memories was in the form of dreams so yeah nothing of those OP like future knowledge so far
