I woke up in an unknown forest.

It seemed like this place was a fantasy world where strange-looking beasts ran rampant. And just like in a game, I seemed to be able to check my enemies’ and my ability.

Let’s hunt monsters and gather titles in order to level up and evolve into a Greater Dragon!

And I heard a mysterious voice in my head, “Let’s aim to be the strongest!”

Sure isn't a perfect story, but as the first novel I read it's fairly decent and made me read it to the end (well, it's up to translators at this point).

Idk why people get so mad at the fact that or lil dragon is a real klutz (whatever, people say that's boring or stoopiiiddd... I think it's cute, but ok...).

I can relate a lot with his choices, lots of naivety and insecurity while longing for company. I like how he's brave and try to stick to his human morals, ... more>>
Spoiler

even with some God plot trying to spoil his plans (seems just like the shitty type of God) he turns into a hero at some point even if he's a evil dragon (again, it was kinda against his choice and HELLO kami-voice) talks a lot about preconceptions when the other *UHUM* "hero" shows up

[collapse]

Dunno what a "freaking expert in novel" would say, but it's a slow paced rpg, isekai history, with a "slice of life" of a dragon with human mind.

Cute? Yes. Funny? There were times, but certainly it's not focused on comedy, it really feels more like slice of life. Fights? I donnu why but I'm used to long fights... I feel like... They are short? (Seems like I'm the only one in this, maybe cause I don't really read novels?). <<less

Read up to Ch125

Great primese but plot is lacking

MC is a lonely SOY Dragon with almost zero aggression and poor decision making and also with an unhealthy obsession with human. So the story can be boring and slow because MC isn't very likeable

Slime villian is evil because for the sake of evil.

Not enough side plot/story to keep the novel spicy and interesting.

You can skim through Chapters and you don't really miss much.

Ok so my problem with this novel is something that happens super early on and it is when he picks the calamity dragon evolution its just so dumb it confuses me. Look I get he wants to make friends but if that is the case then why in he'll would you pick a form that with it everyone will try to kill you on sight. Just for a human transformation skill even if he did get the skill he will always have to hide the fact he is a dragon or everyone even his friends will try kill him. I mean it had evil in its description. And this was when I knew this wasn't for me I need some sort of commen sense in my MC at least enough to not pick the literal evil option. Cause there is a difference between naive innocence and just being s*upid.

Okay, so the way this going was pretty decent, I was hoping for a more cliche story ark, but after 200 it started getting repetitive.

MC is not as strong as opponent, ends up coming out on top, grinds through exp enemies like but. Fights bigger opponent and barely makes it out alive.

Literally the same thing over and over again.

I was hoping the story would dive more into the cliche isekai novel where he partners up with a kingdom, gets a princess as a fiance and defeats evil, just using him... more>> being a dragon as a difference to make the novel seem fresh, but no.

There isn't even a main antagonist in this novel.

Spoiler

All heroes reincarnated are bad by nature so he naturally fights them, he always wins and the heroes only last like 30 chapters each. If you understand though the main antagonist is supposed to be the god that sent him there but the god is helping him destroy all the heroes so it doesn't make much sense.

[collapse]

Further down the road, you'll notice that the story has no regards to the world around the MC. Not much detail has been fleshed out for any character whatsoever.

The main character, is a coward.

The world has many countries, that are being by each battle so like? Can't go back there!

It feels like the author created this vast world, didn't tell the reader much about it and is destroying it limb from limb each chapter. Like, what's going to be left when all enemies are dead?

Spoiler

I thought the whole point of giving the MC humanization was that he can join a guild or something a live a little more normal life. But the author doesn't let the MC do that because he's always moving around.

[collapse]

Idk, I just feel like there is no real basis behind the story after he becomes the dragon. The story feels like it's just imploading on itself.

I rated this 3 stars due to lack of detail in setting/character development, and also due to the author adding minute details that have self confliction and don't matter to the story. <<less

I liked it at first because it seemed like the author was making the MC enjoy being a monster but he constantly pushed the idea of the MC wanting to become human. That idea really pissed me off because anyone with half a brain and even remotely knows what a dragon is, would never want to be human again, for a short period at least, but here is this MC that spent ~1 year< in a dragon body and became companions with a great partner but.... Spoilers =_=

Ugh I can't... more>> express my hatred for that trope. I can stand a MC being absolute garbage weak for over 100 chapters but I can't stand a absolutely s*upid MC. I despise them with a unquenchable rage. I'm sorry for hating really s*upid characters. Like I can stand The Strongest System and A Will Eternal because they get smarter MCs with at least a bit of guts

then again that is my opinion and you might like it more from what I said above but keep in mind that at around chapter 60 it gets heavily MTL which sucks because the text is both hiragana and katakana making a mass of some unreadable parts. I'm done with my rant sorry of this dropped your opinion of it many folds <<less

My thoughts after reading the novel:

The fight scenes drag on faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar too long. Some fights are interesting, but there will be some where you'll be accompanying the protagonist in some excruciatingly grindy battles (and monologue). My recommendation, if a fight becomes uninteresting because 1) it becomes a curb stomp battle or 2) it takes up 2 or more chapters, skip to the end. The author give a "relatively" good "summary" to what had occurred during the battle.

One of my biggest complaints is that there is not enough character development and... more>> relationship building. As as a great person said: "The humans are the focus, everything else is furniture." (In this case, the "humans" would be the "monsters" ironically.) Even though it's nice to see the cast slowly grow in power, their personalities and humanity stagnate, neither improving nor worsening. The author neglects the these human elements in favor of "hey, how powerful can I get?" I do agree that wildly changing characters is a bad thing, but there needs to be at least a change that is moderately noticeable. I'm not going to go into the character of the protagonist. Other far superior reviews have already done a review on the protagonist character. (In short, he sucks and fails to grow.)

If you're looking for a power fantasy, look elsewhere. The author sets up the story in that when the main character overcomes struggles and reaches milestones, the MC spouts out regrets and complaints. The successes are often not rewarding for the reader (in this case, me). If you're looking for a "friendship" fantasy (err... is that what they call them?), definitely look in the other direction. Though this novel may have some interesting relationships, I would personally look elsewhere. <<less

Updated at c288, 03/26/2021... two and a half years after the original review.

It's a fantasy combat isekai down to its core. Having said that, the series embraces the gaming stat/growth system unabashedly, which I have to regard as a considerable plus-- if you're using it, embrace it. Go all in. Commit! Don't just bring it up halfheartedly and wave it away.

The first arc is fun and worth the read, but nothing particularly spectacular, and the third arc is a delight. The problem is the second arc which is... tiresome, not... more>> particularly interesting, and runs from approximately c100 to c210. After getting out of the second arc, it rather recovers the magic of the first arc. If you can tolerate it, then go for it. Otherwise, just stop at the first arc (which is very clearly delineated in the narrative). As such, the rating has been adjusted accordingly.

It also suffers from plot hooks that are unresolved for extremely long durations (though I've been assured that they do get resolved... well past what's been translated at this point in time though).

-----

Note: Spoiler is the original review, written at c194. The bottom of the spoiler section has an actual spoiler, after a linebreak and is in strikeout.

Spoiler

It's a fantasy combat isekai down to its core. Having said that, the series embraces the gaming stat/growth system unabashedly, which I have to regard as a considerable plus-- if it gets introduced, use it, don't just abandon it a few chapters later.

The world, settings, and characters are all fairly stock.

There's a fair bit of combat in here and, after nearly 200 chapters, it drags on a bit. Its saving grace here is that at least some of them have unusual resolutions that aren't a case of a last minute power up.

Middlin', mediocre, average, standard, is how I'd have to wrap. It isn't bad, but there's nothing particularly outstanding. Note that there are some (not many) chapters whose translations are of particularly frustrating quality, if that is a concern.

-----

My primary objection to this series is that there are unresolved plot hooks that have persisted for over 100 chapters, with no movements towards conclusion, or even progress, in sight. It's almost like the author decided to reboot the series in the middle.

I'm suprised I thought we will be able to see the life of a dragon instead we get to see a sissy boy running away from worms and weak creatures and destroying the name of dragons not to mention that he is not that smart normally -.- and gets manipulated and making things difficult for no reason "lets become strong I want to be strong" next day resting in a cave and cooking mushrooms for days to come while chasing monkeys that steal his dried meat.............................................. if it wasn't for... more>> the MC learning ability and thinking he would have died already.

Colclusion: the MC is a normal being that makes mistake BUT Learns from he/she mistakes so if u can pull through the nonsense that's happening u will be fine all in all this novel isn't a most but quite interesting and unusual Worth reading slowly don't force ur way and just enjoy the bad and good. This series had a potential to be great well that passed on, it still has a potential to be good if the author can get his sh*t together. The MC should get over being a human, he doesn’t need to live as a dragon, he has intelligence use it in his development instead of whining all day and just crave for missing the benefits of being a human. Seriously all those whining is killing this series

There are a ton of reviews talking about how it gets better but at least for the first 100 chapters the novel I think just of poor quality. The main character really does feel s*upid, and at least for me there is close to nothing that motivates me to read further. The story I think overuses plot devices and its world building is just overall sub-par, so I completely agree that there was potential but it overall just ends up feeling forced.
Spoiler

So to start a list one of the first issues I can think of is when he is an egg, while things like him being abandoned in this random forest might be explained later his overall luck as an egg just feels unrealistic. For the entire time after he evolves out of his egg he continues to run into more and more monsters, things like wolves, spiders, clay bears, ect. yet during the time he was a weak egg he never ran into any of these big threats. There isn't any reasoning given like him going deeper into the forest, the enemies just end up having strength comparable to him. There are a lot of things like this where the world itself just feels like something painted for that part of the story rather than a realistic world.
The biggest annoyance to me for this story is how s*upid the main character is, to the point where it feels like natural selection for him to be dead. I'm not specifically referring to him picking the plague dragon evolution path because of human transformation, yeah its incredibly dumb but you can at least argue his loneliness fueled that decision. What I'm referring to is just his day-to-day life that just makes MC seem really s*upid. To name a few examples when first learned rest magic (healing) he used all of his mana to restore a tiny bit of his health, thereby sealing one of his strongest weapons, baby breath, for some measly hp for the s*upid reason of "if I use it I might get a skill"
There are tons of things like this in the story, where it just feels like the MC is not thinking through any of his actions, to the point where it makes him feel s*upid.
One of the biggest things to me that made him seem s*upid and highlighted poor world building is how he would fight monsters. Constantly he would be fighting a monster, like the clay bear, where he is struggling against it and instead of retreating and being safe he will charge head first and defeat it in a close fight. This is just an insanely s*upid thing to do, and he should of definitely been killed by one of these rushes without a plan or at the very least been finished off by other monsters after he left himself with little hp and no mana.
Then you have things like Divine voice, which is just a plot device the author uses. It's sole purpose is to give explanations that the author feels like giving out or forcing the MC down the path the MC wants. I'm sure it gets explained later but at least for this part it just feels like lazy writing. I honestly think the story would of been better if the MC wasn't a reincarnated human and instead just saw humans giving justification for him not understanding that plague is something bad, so he would pick these options (which do feel forced, how it specifically mentions human transformation but doesn't phrase it like "this species can transform into humans due to their desire to toy with humans" like it does for every other thing in the series.) and still end up going down this path where people hate him but he wants to get along. Instead we get a reincarnated human who acts without thinking which just makes him feel like an idiot rather than uneducated.
A lot of people mention things like "this isn't an overpowered mc" or "MC makes mistakes" but when he makes mistakes he won't learn from them, he puts no thought into his actions and when it doesn't work out its not a mistake, its poor foresight. Despite being a former human he has never once tried to strategize, some basic examples are leaving pottery/meat/spices near the village over and over. I'm not saying it would work but having this basic level of thought to try to befriend someone is something the MC lacks, so when it doesn't work out and he makes a "mistake" it just feels like its caused by him charging head first without ever thinking ahead. I would also argue that the MC is overpowered... Yeah he is not at satou from death march level of overpowered but he is a mary sue protagonist, where things like exhausting himself because he wouldn't leave an unadventurous fight won't cause him to be killed by other monsters, it just skips to when he is all healed. He never runs into a monster stronger than him that he can't escape from or luck his way into killing. There is no planning on his side, he just charges in, gets a lucky breakthrough, and wins. While its not necessary overpowered its not like this is a story of an MC struggling and being forced to use his brains to avoid enemies that could squash him... Its a guy protected by his plot armor taking unadventurous fights and winning/surviving due to plot armor.

[collapse]

Overall to me this story just feels full of issues like this and it doesn't have anything that makes me want to read further. There's nothing that really hooks readers and makes them want to read to the climax (confessions in romance, final fights in action, ect.) since the MC is just wandering around a forest. Quite a lot of people are saying it gets better later in the series so maybe the authors writing has improved but I'm not going to force myself to read something to get to the point where it might be good.

For a long time, until around chapter 140, it was REALLY boring. Then it gets more interesting. What annoys me the most about this novel is that the main character keeps repeating that he cannot do something because he is human at heart, and then says that he does not remember anything from his past life and that he does not want to go with back to it. He also worries that his bad skills will increase and then he doesn't care. Many of his actions contradict what he... more>> is said to believe. He's also terribly naive, and seems to believe that no human can be evil. It's really annoying. The fights are also terribly long, in many moments it is worth skipping them, because they do not add anything to the plot. Many of the abilities of other monsters or heroes remain unclear, even though they sound interesting.

I don't think this novel is a total waste of time, but “Kumo desu ga, Nani ka„ is a better choice if you want to read something of this genre. “Apotheosis of a Demon – A Monster Evolution Story„ could also be a better choice. <<less

First off this web novel is not at all bad as the reviews told. But I admit that the start of the story will definitely bore you because of how slow the pacing and because his not to OVERPOWERED like the MC'S in another isekai series which literally finish all enemies with a skill they just learned. So if you're tired of reading a LN or WN with op character I would definitely recommend this. Mostly because of its unique theme and plot but this story actually is depicting what... more>> would a normal person do if he is reincarnated as a dragon and not just use all of his power to f*cking screw the world with his unstoppable and phycopathic way of destroying or ruling the world.

I would strongly recommend reading the manga first cuz it's already beyond the somewhat boring phase and is entering the real story. Then start at around chapter 90 below or above I've forgotten but currently the manga has 21+ chapter so read it if you're interested in kindly read haha also the manga's visual are really good. <<less

There is no depth in this story. Excluding the useless MC. The world is dry and the monsters all feel generic. The plot had a lot of place to go but since the story is basically a monologue of the MC there is nothing that makes me invested to read. I kept slogging through the book hoping it got better but it was just contrivance after contrivance with very little to make it interesting. Here's the plot of the book in a nutshell

MC fights something -> Levels up ->Tries to... more>> talk to humans -> fails -> Repeat ad nauseum.

The translation is poor and obviously MTL.

The character are bad.

The MC is a useless nit.

read it if you enjoy long fight scenes but the lack of any coherent plot makes this really difficult to read. <<less

Slow paced story might be even more slow paced than kumo desu, the MC sometimes make s*upid or unrealistic choice? Basically you follow a baby dragon who heard a voice of Gods that tell him to be the strongest or something.

Was it worth reading?

Maybe? It wasn't best but it wasn't bad either there's some interesting part of the stories, tho I'm more recommend you to read the manga since for me personally the manga put the story better and more interesting since there's art and all

As I said it's so... more>> slow paced so it's might turn people off since the progressing too slowly, kumo desu also has a lot of grinding chp but it's lie on world building and plot, in here I guess his goal was to become the strongest because God told him? Other than that it just a dragon doing dragon thing, which is mainly well leveling <<less

I’ve read some bad novels but this takes the cake as one of the worst.

I could go on a long rant about why it’s bad but I’ll cut it short.

It reads like something a middle schooler wrote, not one with writing ability either. Got to 10 pages and all I could think was it’s dry and boring and made me glad I didn’t pay for it otherwise I’d request a refund.

Since I had the immense displeasure of reading this a while ago and not writing a review about it until I bothered to make an account just to diss Manowa and the antics of that author's forced romance plot; I figured I might as well do this the honors.

Story starts off relatively simple with a guy dying and reincarnated as a dragon, the pinnacle of mythical beings and chose to throw all of the positive racial traits of this race out the window.

Bottom line- this MC wants to get along... more>> with humans who think of dragons as nothing but loot. He just oh so desperately tries to not use racial skills in fights because it'd make him "bad" to the humans that he makes things harder for himself and for the reader.

Will never recommed this shitshow to anybody. I wanted to write a more detailed review but I can't be arsed with this. <<less

Im genuinely upset by this novel. It had all it needed to be great but it screwed it up hard. The MC started by doing what he NEEDED to survive. He uses his appraisal on everything beforehand to maximize survival. Later on he becomes an idiot and doesn't use it until it is too late. There are so many better options that he has but he literally refuses to use them. Instead of preparing for a known battle, he would go and cook dinner like nothing would attack him. I... more>> genuinely got angry at the ridiculousness of the MC so many times that I just quit. It is a good read up until the late 90s where it takes a hard nosedive into s*upidity. Not recommended for readers that need to finish novels to enjoy them. <<less

Take this review with a grain of salt, cause it might be edited if I come back to this novel. And let me warn you, this novel is not for everyone, so I dont blame you if you drop it in the first few chapters.

Spoiler

-There is a difference between naive and s*upid-

The MC is an idiot, he believes he is a human while inside an egg, a DRAGON egg.

Thinks he went to Africa cause of the alligators he found while there are also fantasy creatures and elements around him. He even talks about how the bigger creatures probably leave him alone cause of him being a DRAGON egg and not wanting to make his parents angry.

When he gets the system prompt for the first time, he is confused cause its a strange and new thing and just ACCEPTS it as a part if reality.

Refuses to accept reality that he is a DRAGON which is a MONSTER and just wants some interaction with humans and is then baffled as to why humans either avoid or attack him when he is just "harmless".

Has the audacity to call others naive and s*upid.

[collapse]

Now, if you stick with it, it could be a good story in the end.

I will edit the review should I come back and read some more to see if its worth reading and then another edit should I continue and finish it. (But will most likely never return to this.) <<less

3.5-4 Stars from me.

Its not "great", but I had fun reading it.

If one is alright with slow pacing and rather short chapters, this story is actually not that bad.

... more>> The MC is not an idiot, but he's certainly no genius either. His character is kinda weakly developed, but not to the degree of being annoying.

The story is not really something new but still entertaining (except the exp farming chaps with eg. the ants).

If I had to name something that really annoyed me, it would be some of the translators being rather bad. Not the MTL kind of bad (well... most of them) but more like:

- needlessly changing the previous TLs word choices for names, etc.

- weird censorship (eg. "a.n.a. lyse")

- weird grammar choices

... Well I guess it's a good read if you have nothing to do for a few days or so. <<less

It started out well enough, it went from an okay to good, but then just bad after certain plot developments at some key points in a few story arcs. MC starts at the bottom of the food chain and slowly works their way up. Some people have problems with the decisions the MC makes, some are warranted but others are just unfair. I feel the MC is trying to pick something good between tough choices from a set of bad options laid out for him. Honestly things feel too stacked... more>> against the MC every time that happens. There do seem to be some plot hole related issues as well, explanations and rants on those in the spoilers.

It is a bit of a cliche but he was a human now a monster that can't remember their past human life all that well. I think a good example of what our MC is like the blundering of Ainz from Overlord doing things out of his league. He is of course less capable in comparison since he wasn't at the top of the pyramid in either his previous or current life. Also lacking the capable subordinates to fix everything, misunderstand, glorify, and cover for the shortcomings.

Unfortunately I start having some big issues with the decisions of the MC and plot development after a certain point in spoilers below. A non spoiler summary being he made a really questionable decision without any real thought or consultation that have huge impact on everything else, it was even somewhat out of character, like his IQ dropped just to make this more reasonable for him to overlook. At least that is what I feel was going on with the decisions he makes at some points.

Spoiler

MAJOR SPOILERS. After he manages to save the village from the little earth dragon because of a conspiracy, but at a steep cost and having to finish off an almost dead human (at his request and to save everyone, who remarkably understood more about the MC's personality and character pretty fast at that) in front of the townsfolk to evolve from a kid plague dragon to an evil plague dragon, then kills little earth dragon, saves the town, and soon after leaving that big misunderstanding of him slaughtering the one guy trapped and dying from an earthquake crevice, gets into a huge fight with this weird op evil shape shifting, skill stealing slime that set everything up outside of the town that also seems to have some kind of relation to the (possibly a different?) god's voice.

He narrowly wins, kills the slime, passes out for a few days in a stream of water from a dive bombing of some kind and just decides to leave his trusty partner and essentially waifu poison salamander behind (she grew to love MC by the way, even the monkeys think of her as the boss's wife in their POV chapter). Even leaving his monkey troop behind without even thinking of trying to explain why he needs to leave or even go back to them despite the fact they are all intelligent and cunning monsters.

At least until a further evolution who knows when to control the poison he may or may not even be scattering as a plague dragon automatically yet, as it hasn't really affected anything or any one. Not even a feeble F rank bottom of the food chain mob a cute sand bunny with 4 HP. The salamander is resistant to poison and eats poisons as a food. For what reason would he not try AT ALL to get back to at least her? These are all the things and thoughts he had that happened after him drifting downstream. I don't know why he didn't think or seriously consider going back upstream and following the water to at least sort things out for all these different issues. According to some comments in the chapters even at "the latest ongoing chapters" we don't see the old group again. So that is several hundred chapters from the looks of it at least.

Between those two major points is where I feel the story starts getting much worse. Its like we just had some established characters with some backstory ripped away without a good enough reason to just have him start from all over and alone in a new area.

[collapse]

I do get that the gods voice he hears seems kind of skewed against him some kind mischievous, misleading, or evil way since he can't seem to get what he wants to be able to befriend humans etc. But you can only take that so far until it seems too stacked against the MC.

Spoiler

With the evolution system established as is he can't even pick any of the more good aligned dragon evolutions since it would basically bottleneck all future development, even early on in the story as a baby, and he ends up essentially being forced to go into the more evil paths with much more growth which seem to level up so much easier than the good aligned paths despite how desperately the MC tries to become a good dragon, on top of how the survival seems to frequently hinge on picking evil dragon paths. I had even skipped to the latest chapter (202 at the time) to try to see where things go.

MAJOR SPOILER he becomes an Ourobros around chapter 192 which had a description said something about seeing infinity and going against god or something. A two headed dragon with him being a male head and in control of the body, while the other head is apparently female, and a new entity different than him, doesn't share his thoughts, but is a part of him that he has no control over and it does what it wants, he cannot converse with it properly or feel its intents in any reasonable way. And for some reason his traveling companion that knows telepathy which is basically a universal communication, doesn't even mediate a simple conversation between them (yet?), despite the fact it has before for different characters earlier in the story. His recovery magic related skills split with it, and it doesn't even cooperate with the MC very well. So yea, they share his dragon body, sense of pain, stats, and resources like that. Doesn't that just sound like a terrible plot development on so many levels?

The MC even stated in much earlier chapters how much he would have hated the option of being a two headed dragon and here we are.

[collapse]

So yea the reasons in those two spoilers are what really ruin this otherwise promising story for me. It might still be considered reading if you are interested, but it is an interesting story with its own unique experience different from similar novels. One that unfortunately goes pretty downhill over time. <<less
