Another novel like 'Immortal Mortal'

The personality of our MC is non-exist. This is basically Author is the MC aka MyFantasyWorldNovel.

There is several references from other novel, that I found it good to implement. But suddenly it turns out dull because clearly the Author use Heaven-Defying means to continue the story.

The interaction between Character is seriously dull. The dialog is always on face value. A sad*st use her cold gaze and command like a sad*st do. WOW what an accurate presentation that I found useless. This novel will have hard time... more>> for character development, because it always falls on face value.

The IDEA of the story using god gene is really unique. But there is no character in this novel. It just a waiting for the climax novel. <<less

I almost passed up this novel because of the reviews.

I'm glad I didn't because it was an entertaining read. Honestly, if you've got nothing more to read, try it, it's not the best, but it's not the worst. I think exactly the same as Potato Tomo.

This is the kind of novel where you just shut your brain, and enjoy the stuff. This is what I qualify as "junk novel", same as KFC, McDonald's or whatever fast food. You keep eating that sh*t even though you know it's bad.

You like OP... more>> MC ? Romance subplot ? Face slapping ? Interesting world ? Go for it, there's nothing more, nothing less. Just read it for what it is and don't take it for what it isn't.

Also, I don't get it why people get mad and say they are fed up with the MC hiding his identity or that he has no goals :

Spoiler

1) Yes he's hiding his identity but he has no choice, even if I'd like to see him say to the world he is Dollar, I don't really care because his "real" identity, Han Sen still gets hype, so whatever. I'm pretty sure that if he revealed his identity, people here would say how dumb and rash he is for revealing it....

2) He has a goal. Uncover the truth about the death of his father. And along the way there's this Shura like girl ? The thing about his grand father, etc. There are so many stuff to look forward...

A very mediocre story. I recommend it only if you don't have anything better to read.

The idea is interesting, but the story is filled with inconsistencies and plotholes. All kinds of things appear and disappear at random. The plot armor is very strong. An arrogant young master appears out of nowhere, gets killed by MC, and leaves behind powerful cultivation method. All in just 2 chapters. Nothing is heard of him after that, as he appeared only to deliver that method to MC. A katana wielding alien pops out of... more>> nowhere, gets killed by MC, and leaves behind his weapon and fighting method. All in few chapters. Apparently humanity is at war with these powerful aliens, but the fact was never mentioned in the story before, and never after it. <<less

This read has huge potential and I will wait till more chapters to see if it's the usual case of chinese novels starting off great then turning into... well anyways, I do hope that this is one of the FEW exceptions. This story up to chapter 3 is quite interesting and makes me want more chapters dearly. But if I can wait for Dominion's End I can definitely wait for this. Thanks to the translator and the editor (If there is one, I assume there is as the writing is... more>> legible, unlike most novels without editors.) <<less

The translation only gets a little bad for a couple of chapters now it's back to near perfection.
I didn't really enjoy the fact that they added something like "knife mind" and knifes all of a sudden, now the whole story from this arc revolves around it and not so much beast souls anymore which really sucks.

-----------------------------
PREVIOUS REVIEW
I've really enjoyed reading this novel. I had to take a few breaks from time to time because the novel got a bit repetitive but overall its not that bad.... more>> It started getting more interesting when he gets to the fourth sanctuary.

The translation before chapter 1600 is amazing but somewhere around chapter 1650 the translation suddenly dips, there is random mistakes here and there. It's not bad to the point where I'll drop it, it just sometimes interrupts my reading concentration. It's a shame that such a good novel is starting to be ruined because the translation is getting sloppy.

Anyway all in all, its a great novel and I recommend people to read it. Don't read the negative reviews. <<less

This novel has a more natural take on the "super item/super pet" formula which is so common in translated novels. As in, these items are literally called "super" and can actually be obtained by people other than the MC. Someone who succeeds via luck and wit?! Travesty!

In all seriousness though, the main character (MC) has absurd luck compared to everyone else. This happens to the extent that it appears to be some kind of predetermined fate. It can't be called "plot armor" per se because there's plenty of times he... more>> f*cks up and nearly gets himself killed. But it still makes his successes a little harder to accept.

On the other hand, his attitude and disposition toward challenges has proved invaluable in resolving the challenges his "luck" presents to him. Sure, he gets himself awesome loot, but not before risking his life a half dozen times. A few of the "lucky" events were actually traps which he barely escaped. In some cases he was forced to work together with enemies to resolve more immediate problems. These aspects add a bit of realism.

Spoiler

That he ends up crediting his mother for much of his success is also a nice touch.

So far I'm enjoying the story. If this review is any indication; I definitely recommend reading Super God Gene! <<less

its not as terrible as the rest of the reviews make it sound... but its not that great either. read it yourself before you decide whether or not its a good novel or not.

pros:

- not really a harem, has one main girl

... more>> - had great potential and decent story

- stayed for the world building

cons:

- MC calls every girl he meets pretty, he judges them and the author makes it sound like they're all potential wives or some shit.

- the romance in this novel is sus, this isn't a romance novel so im okay with it but its bs.. the main female lead only started liking the MC just because she started realizing that he's actually a genius?

- what made him so powerful??? luck.... he finds this marble in this f*cking sacred blood beetle that lets him grow creatures to another tier

- character development isn't really a thing here <<less

Edit: so damn frustrating MC with a serious case of multiple identity disorder trying to make so many identities 1 for each arena he goes to even when he doesnt need them and dragging useless personas. I understand the first one when be was weak but when that he has strong support and power still using it is dumb.

Great read till now though some plot holes are present and some pretty erratic behavior by the MC. I really like the concept and the cheat of the MC is... more>> not too OP and pretty reasonable. Character Buildup could have been better though. <<less

I've read about half of this, a full 1800 chapters (some 2 million words!), and I'm not proud of that. As endless, shallow junk food novels go, it's creative and original in some respects, but not really thrilling or clever. By some metrics this is really a 1-star series, but rated as junk, I think it's somewhat passable. There's just other stuff out there that does it better. To try and continue the s*upid metaphor, we don't care about the nutritional value of our junk, but we want to minimize... more>> the bad aftertaste.

I say it's creative because it rarely tends to repeat itself outright. True, there are probably a hundred times where Han Sen has to outmaneuver a monstrous beast to obtain some kind of level-up fruit or a rare plant of some kind. There is a formula, no doubt. But there aren't a ton of obvious repeating stock character types, and there are a lot of weird and unique ideas all along the way (like Han Sen being chased by a pair of shoes). Fights don't stretch on forever, and I didn't tend to find the novel *boring*, which is really the only ultimate sin for tr*sh novels.

But I find it wasteful of its best ideas, poorly paced, and prone to unearned developments.

Take for example -- and I will be spoiling things here -- the quick shift from the early chapters, where Han Sen is an average talent who uses a cheat skill to get ahead, only to be rewritten as a naturally-godly talent who turns out to have been born to godly parents as well.

He gets a steady girlfriend too early on and even marries her, and she's not even particularly interesting compared to later figures like Gu Qingcheng. I don't really want a sleeze protagonist, but tying the knot so early just takes all the fun out of it.

I often complain when novels are "too convenient", but there are countless examples of that here. For instance, Han Sen's ability to get a "job" as a bodyguard that he can take off from for months at a time without getting fired. A better novel would embrace these troublesome engagements, using them to keep things from getting too stable. If he has a job, make it entertaining. If he can't hold a job, make his pennilessness a source of conflict, or find a more amusing way to make him get ahead.

All of his favorite adopted pets seem to always coincidentally be of some amazing bloodline or of a nature that transcends realms, making the transition from the first or second sanctuary all the way to the Super Hyper God Realm +1, while barely lifting a finger or even being necessary.

An even better example is the character Zero, who presents a very engaging twist when she initially appears, having completely inexplicable powers, but as soon as she first waits obediently in a shelter for Han Sen while he goes off on his own, the mystique is gone -- there are no longer any consequences. Then the series stalls so long on providing answers that nobody cares anymore. Her strength doesn't keep up with the power creep anyway, so what does it matter where she's from?

Poor planning is a personal peeve of mine -- I know it's impossible to perfectly plan everything when you're pumping out a chapter every day, but the author barely even seems to follow an outline. It seems insane to me that you would give the protagonist a new one-time use beast soul, explain what it does, and then have his entire inventory blow up forever before he ever uses it. It spoils the rush of obtaining anything cool in the first place. I hate these kinds of unintentional red herrings, but that's the kind of novel this is.

The mystery of his family adds some good long-term investment in what's going on, but it gets to feeling artificial. The roundabout way in which any character who knows anything about Han Jingzhi talks about him gets real frustrating after over a thousand chapters of it! I still have no idea what the answers are, and that mystery should have been resolved and replaced with another question two hundred times over by now. I don't care anymore.

The greater world is often largely ignored -- years frequently pass while Han Sen is out hunting down creatures, without any great Shura war or development involving the crystallizers or whatever. Everything goes on pause for as long as necessary, so we can do more power levelling instead. You can be forgiven for forgetting that he has a sister -- it's far more important that we see Han Sen steal his ten millionth magic fruit.

Whole portions of the novel seem to be added without any thought to how they fit into the bigger picture, like mech piloting, and then are completely forgotten.

I did generally approve of Han Sen's character, but at times he goes past the point of 'lovable scoundrel' into just 'kind of a real bastard'. I don't like that. But he's inconsistent. At one point recently before I quit reading, he selflessly intervened to prevent a massacre, which I thought was nice, especially as popular as it seems to be to have main characters who don't care about anything.

The translations are generally decent, but the quality does fall apart at times. Some stretches of chapters are clearly outsourced to other translators, and are not checked for consistency, or just feel markedly amateurish in their wording. Sometimes the basic terms used to compare the tiers of characters and items even get swapped around, such as "primitive" and "ordinary" beast souls, and the "Aristocrat" spirit rank apparently ceases to exist for a few story arcs -- although I have no idea if it's like that in the original Chinese. Maybe this stuff doesn't bother other people as much as me, but these novels are basically video games -- wouldn't you be annoyed if a game kept changing its mind about whether blue or green tier loot was the rarer kind?

All in all, never painfully dull, but I advise you to show more self-respect than I have shown myself in reading as far as I did. Aim higher. <<less

TL;DR: Has it's problems but can be fun overall, you should be able to find out if you will like it in like 10 short chapters so just try it out. It gets bad when it approaches chapter 1000 tho, so watch out. 4 stars is for pre-1000 chapters, and it does go down.

Let's start with the obvious annoyances you will see when you first read:

  1. Genes don't work like that, it's rather annoying how the author just ignores that.
  2. "technology doesn't work in the sanctuary, but this air canister I use to briefly breathe underwater is a-ok! Also, while gunpowder and clocks don't work, I'm able to start a fire normally." Very annoying that the author says tech doesn't work when in truth it's just a rather select few things that don't work, and if tech doesn't work, reality itself would have to work differently, science isn't magic, if chemical reactions still happen normally and things like levers and springs still apply, why the *frick* wouldn't a gun work?
But those two aren't much of a deal breaker.

... more>> What *CAN* be a deal breaker are the flaws of many chinese novels and many wish fulfillment/power fantasy novels you can find on this website.

Things like power creep, repetitiveness, a few side-plots or characters that are left behind because the MC grows strong too fast (in other words, the author wants a change in scenery), sorting algorithm of evil (the enemy is just strong enough to be a threat but never strong enough that the MC can't cope or escape with a deus ex machina or something like that), and so on and on.

Since this is a wish fulfillment/power fantasy novel, you won't get much in the way of character development and tridimensional characters either, what makes it fun is the adventure, the action and the various factors that surrounds those two, and this is where my big no no comes around.

Inconsistency and unsatisfying developments.

The whole point of wish fulfillment is to fulfill wishes (duh), and there's no point in a power fantasy if stuff doesn't feel powerful and fantastical.

Around chapter 1000 the author seems to begin to grow sloppy, various things just start grating on the reader and pay-offs lack the weight they once had because in five minutes a enemy will appear that will be able to block the super attack skill the MC just learned, various things seem to happen because the author wants to, like the MC getting careless (when he's been established to not do that) so that a certain encounter can happen and spice things up and other things of the sort. <<less

What I like about this novel compare to others is that the MC's personality stays consistent from chapter 1 to the latest chapter. This is important because I've read many novels where the MCs start off as this smart kid who sees the world differently than others making them an outlier. They would then go on a journey to become stronger and meet all these idiotic "geniuses" from other clans and win against all of them. However, that is where the descent into madness happens. For some reason, all these... more>> MC become bloodthirsty and arrogant young master type characters, and any trace of their former self is completely removed from their character. They no longer possess the quality and traits that made them different and lovable.

That is why for Han Sen (MC) to stay true to himself after experiencing so many battles and events, should be something to celebrate for. This is a story that follows the perspective of Han Sen's journey to the top, so every action he commits and every decision he comes to will influence how the story will progress. If he descends into madness like every other generic MC, then the story will also fall into mediocrity. We would end up with a story of how MC offends everyone and their mother and how he beats every one of them into submission.

Thanks to Han Sen's quirky personality, we get to have many fun and interesting interactions between him and supporting characters. Through his shameless behavior and glib tongue, he turns many situations that would leave him dead into his favor, while still manages to keep his own reputation positive. <<less

The story started out great but it got boring fast. The struggles were very intense and entertaining at first but the hero grows too strong with no goal. The atmosphere becomes casual and the story becomes a ton of school competitions, so it feels like I’m watching the day to day activities of a random athlete.

Take this from someone who actually took his time and read through all 3462+2 chapters. This book is not worth investing much feelings into.

Don't get me wrong, I rather liked the beginning and early mid of the series but basically you could cut 2000 chapters out of this mess and nothing would change.

There is a plot, its super messy, but it's there. Mostly just feels like it was winged though and author just wrote what he came up with on the spot instead of carefully crafting anything intricate. So I... more>> guess here we land on the slightly positive side? Very slightly.

World building is kind of crap because in this book there are no travel times or anything that would make the milieu appreciable. It's just "this planet has a lot of sand" "there are so many flowers here" etc. Very elementary descriptions. I guess its sort of enough? Won't feel like much but at least I know what's going on most of the time.

Here come the negatives though, borrowing my last sentence "knowing what's going on MOST of the time"; well most is kind of not enough. This novel suffers from really f*cking weird spastic plot jumping that is very hard to keep track off and makes absolutely no sense in any big picture. Our MC might be fighting someone tremendously powerful in space, putting his life on line for something, however in next moment he might just pull out a skill he got 2 chapters back and go inside the eye of the enemy and just walk into a whole different branch of plot.

It's very hard to explain but the situations and things that happen in this book often time get neutered/cut off so suddenly that its very, very taxing for your mind. New things begin constantly and after a while it just feels like author wanted to experiment with popular novel genres like "unbeatable shopkeeper" or "studying X" or whatever was the fad at the time in QI. I even managed to kind of grasp the intent be which might be the reason for these but that's a whole another story.

In conclusion its not a very good book, there was indeed some potential as a short comedic/semi-serious powerfantasy type but what it ended up feeling like was author was surprised of his popularity or something, needed the money, and decided to milk the story for all its worth by making up random crap for 2, 000 chapters. <<less

It's a really good time killer. I listen to books while I work, the concepts stay fresh, the side characters grow on there own for the most part, and you really cant judge the story tell you hit about chapter 1700. I'm being dead serious. Its not even the same book. The entire story gets crazy. I'm not even knocking the older chapters, the story really progresses with how it approaches fights, But for the life of me I cant remember how to mark this with a spoiler tag so... more>> just be warned.

*Spoilers*

*Like big ones*

The fights start as kind of game like, parties, boss fights, that sort of thing. Then they slowly start to shift to one on one to one (few) on many where the main character is always the one or few. Because their are less "people" to group up with over time, after a while it becomes class filtered, you wont see a bunch of small guys attacking one big guy because the powers that the big guy can stack are op. After around chapter 1650 to 1700 it really takes a shift.

These are the huge spoilers

It becomes a cultivation novel, and a decent one at that. The powers aren't learned then never used again, the strong guys are really strong and the main character cant fight them when he is weak, the main character actually gets bullied. He is currently at the strong/weak level, and the strong/strong guys will still one shot him, and he knows it, and he will not fight them. The early sections where all made to strengthen his everything lol, so now while he has potential, he is still just good enough not godly.

When real "gods" that are 4th dimensional show up, he gets clowned on. I really have to stress the plot armor is there but it makes sense, he is not lucky, the characters he is fighting, don't care about time, space, the laws of physics... and I think this is like a Naruto type story, he was made to be powerful, not lucky. There are treasures that can hit you back in time, so you have to dodge them before they happen. Engineering a guys life is not hard. <<less

This is one of the first CN novels I read and I have to say it is one of my favorites. It definitely has its bad points, like any novel does, but I just find it so satisfying when Han Sen beats the sh*t out of enemies that used to tower above him in power.
Spoiler

One of my favorites is when he goes back to the 3rd god’s shelter after becoming a Demigod and mu*ders the f*ck out of all the spirits

[collapse]
The story can get boring at some points, which I suppose stems from how long this novel is, but I always find my self coming back after a few days and getting right back into it. The romance is simple but satisfying. Han Sen never seems to OP as the creatures keep getting stronger and stronger and the battles are never boring because he has to change his tactics along with the weapons and skills he picks up. Another thing that keeps me reading this story is all of the mystery and how things hundreds of chapters apart connect. All in all this story is not with out its flaws and you don’t like this genre or are not enjoying it in the first few hundred chapters I would not recommend continuing. But if you like it, your in for the long haul ;)

One of the best Chinese light novels I have ever read. While the beginning is wonky (stubbing a super powerful chick in the ass?), after 100 or so chapters it's stellar. The author doesn't suffer from mild Alzheimer like many other Chinese authors do, he actually remembers important items and clues even 500 chapters after last mentioning them. The plot is interesting and its hard to see any plot holes, plot twists are interesting and not always predictable. You don't see many Chinese novels of this quality.

Now after finishing the... more>> entire story, I can tell that it really was a great experience. Definitely my favorite Chinese Novel and one of my favorites in general.

What I really liked:

  1. The system, it is very clear and interesting.
  2. The plot, very complex but interesting with many elements, from science fiction to classic phantasy.
  3. The protagonist, very hard working, not the smartest but not dumb either.
  4. The antagonist, he is very smart, menacing, scary and not a s*upid caricature of evil versus good.
  5. There is no harem to satisfy h**ny teenagers. Women are treated with respect here.
  6. The author actually remembered plot lines even after 3000 chapters and closed almost all of them. This is unheard of when reading light novels of this length.
What Ididn't like:

  1. The story is too long. It should have ended in the sanctuaries. Anything after was less interesting, more similar to all other Chinese novels and confusing.
  2. There are no characters here that I really liked.
  3. There are no real stakes. People don't tend to die here unless they are villains.

Another day another novel done.

So Super Gene is about a layered-world story where it is stronger the higher up it is. In this world the characters are "evolving" instead of cultivating and there is this place called "Sanctuary" where the characters will have a game-like system to semi-guide them. I called it semi because it really is not a helpful system.

After reaching the ending, I can surely say that this is not worth the read specifically because of how it ends.

So how bad is this novel actually? I'd argue myself... more>> and say that it's not bad, I've learned to drop novels that are bad and I didn't drop this, 3400+ chapters of it. That's a big number in my libraries and I did actually read it.

I have to praise the author on knowing how to control the fillers properly. This novel has its fair share of pleb talks, flowery explanations, and other known methods in the book, but the author always keep himself in check and keep the story going without ever breaking an established world-rule.

Well, of course this is majorly helped by the layered-world concept where the author has a certain degree of freedom in changing the rules when the layer changed.

Even so, the author really doesn't have that great of a writing. The MC has this weird ease on levelling up that the author needs to find creative ways to hinder the progression, this does adds color to the story but at the same time it put this shackles around the MC that I find annoying as a reader.

The world also feels weirdly small even if the author speaks in "Planets", "Stars", "Solar System". I just can't get that sense of "big" when a punch sent someone breaking through several planets, it's just weird.

And finally, the one thing that made me unable to recommend this novel, the author insistence on 'Secrets'. The characters in this novel are allergic to talking about secrets. It goes from not wanting to talk, not asking the important question, too untrusting to tell something, not having the time (and then goes to speak 10-20 words saying why he/she needs to go), interrupted by something (sometimes an army that just pops out suddenly), and so on and so forth.

It is VERY annoying, the reader doesn't know sh*t about what's going on, I can't even hypothesized since there are so many possibilities. And you'd think that there might be something BIG, but NO, there is nothing so big that it needs to be a super secret.

This, unfortunately only unfolds toward the end. I was quite disappointed on the ending, this will be forgivable if the author managed to tie a good conclusion across all the stories that was going on in the novel, but no, there are questions left unaddressed, the final battle was confusing that even the MC himself doesn't know what's going on, and even at the epilogue the author still unfold more secrets hoping to connect it to another layer above the current one.

It's bad... 2 stars from me, what a shame. <<less

Welp, I read this novel thinking I had stumbled upon a written masterpiece back in 2021. Boyyyy I was so f*ckin wronggggg

Up until about the 300s, Super Gene was an entertaining story, despite the repeated tropes it kept using. Our MC was funny, OP, and

Spoiler

the 'Super Gene Point' being revealed was actually a turning point in the novel, or so I believed at the time

[collapse]

Let's start off with the Pros of the novel:

    • easy-to-understand and kind of unique power system; based on getting gene points from various types of spiritual beasts
    • bad ass MC
    • pretty good fight scenes
    • funny side characters and moments
that's pretty much it. Looking back I don't know how I was able to read nearly 600 chapters of this bs without getting bored

Onto the cons:

    • the FL is so generic and bland and the only reason her character is relevant is because her family is powerful
    • At first I thought our MC was s*upid and this was going to be a weak-to-strong type story, and then its revealed he has unparalleled talent in using weapons like WTF make that make sense
        • the mysteries surrounding his house don't make any sense at all either
    • as there is nearly 3400 chapters of this bullshit, it becomes obvious fairly quickly that this novel has tons of filler and fight scenes with random people.
        • The MC has to fight person A, because they did something even though A is supposed to be stronger than MC. Our MC has some godly cheats on his side so he is able to beat A. Quickly, MC actual strength will surpass A, and now he has to fight person B who is stronger than MC. Don't forget about the hundreds and thousands of a**holes and people who continue to underestimate MC for no reason at all
        • This process repeats to no f*cking end and my only motivation for continuing to read this novel was seeing what types of weapons and beasts the MC would get, and how strong he could become
I hope anyone who sees this review does not ever read a single word from this atrocious novel, because you are just wasting your time.

The premise is interesting but the story is meh at best so it's definitely not worth the long reading time.

Plus it is full of the horrible cliches of the CN novels, i.e, making MC miserable just cause of a petty misunderstanding, typical young masters who get face slapped etc.

Very annoying.
