This is an exciting and fast-paced read that won't leave you bored. I read everything up to the current chapter in one day.

Summary:

After suffering from terminal illness for over 20 years, Ling Lan dies and her spirit is transported 10, 000 years to the future.

... more>> Despite her hopes to live a peaceful life, she's thrown into a military society and family drama. Forced to act as a male in order to retain her mysteriously deceased father's inheritance, she learns combat arts and enters military school as a "young master."

Review:

This novel has a lot of good points: a level-headed but funny female MC, endearing side characters, a unique setting, and great pacing. It's almost like a cultivation novel set in the future.

In particular, I really appreciated how the author takes time to show Ling Lan growing up step by step. It makes her OP skills/cheats seem a lot more realistic when you witness the grueling training she goes through every day. Nothing comes easy for her, and the story takes the time to show her growth and development in an engaging way. Even as of Chapter 80, Ling Lan is still a child at Scout School (not even near her teenage years at the prestigious boys academy described in the novel description).

The translation quality is also very good with daily releases.

Overall, this is one of the best and most attention-grabbing female MC novels that I've read in a long time. Highly recommended for now. I will update this review later as the story progresses.

Update as of ch.262:

I think one of the main problems many reviewers have with this novel (besides characterizing the enemy Japanese nation as arrogant cannon fodder) is that it's not what they expect.

They come here expecting an over-powered, hyper-motivated, dominating MC. Or they want shoujo cross-dressing shenanigans and romantic fluff.

But that's not what you get in this novel -- What you get is a very sensible MC who is doing her absolute best to survive as a man. No, she will not carelessly reveal her gender, engage in forbidden romance, or go on a mu*derous rampage. That is not who Ling Lan is. At her core, Ling Lan is just a grown woman who knows how to endure suffering over many years, and who really just wants to live a simple, free, and fulfilled life. <<less

It's a mix and match of themes. You have a 24 years old female MC from our current earth who died from sickness she endured for as long as she lived. Then an AI that's bound to her took her soul/spiritual energy to a new world. She's basically reincarnated not transmigated cause she is a fetus in her new mom womb, she didn't take/occupy anyone's body.

The new world she's in now is 10, 000 years after. So this world full of futuristic sci fi stuff; hover cars, virtual reality, mecha,... more>> wormhole, planet wars. It's quite interesting that the story is a mix of everything.

Our MC is an interesting person; makes funny monologues, cute dream/goal, tenacious, ruthless and decisive when she wants to (she kicked a monster skull straight into its brain), sly, smart, cautious.

She is forced to live a life as a boy due to family/clan difficulties that threaten her immediate family.

The story is entertaining so far, personally I like it. It's quite hard to find an agreeable female MC for me so far she fits the bill. ;) I usually stir away from mecha theme cause I don't like the theme but the MC draws me in.

The one I enjoy the most is her monologues/antics especially when she was in her mom womb, I find it quite hilarious. <<less

This is an enjoyable read if you want action, comedy, gender bender and an female protagonist!

It is set in a futuristic setting, where something I would normally stay away from because of 'expectations' or 'depictions' of what the future would become. But this novel made me a captivated, even with this setting, which is pretty awesome.

The translation quality is also good, that is understandable and actually readable.

im still quit at the beginning of the novel

but I believe that this is really nice to read!

Its not the usual rebith story where the MC is gonna take revenge and change fate bla, no!- Its far more interesting (even thought there is the sci-fi element because of the futuristic world) its a mix of different elements which show that the story will definitivly be entertaining.

Ehem the socalled elements are for example that shes being acompanied by a "system", or the fact that she is forced to crossdressed and there... more>> seems to be a secret matter with her soul...

all in all its a good read

but unfortunately we are still at the beginning of the novel! <<less

For people contemplating whether to read this, it is a great book but do understand this is not like a typical shoujo themed book that you expect. For the first time instead of there being a man running to her rescue whenever she's weak or her often falling in love after a man domineering tries to woo her the MC is the type to get sh*t done herself - be it using her strength or her cheats. You can look at this as a shounen novel but with a female... more>> MC.

Anyway I've gone off track - I'm only writing this review because certain other reviews for this novel have confused me and also annoyed me a bit.

It's the review that has stuff written like 'since there are AI's and such in the world why do they still need humans to control the mechs. Why waste so many years of training when an AI can just as easily do so?'

And honestly, this confuses me cause when I read this novel I understood the fact the AIs of the world Ling Lan has reincarnated in are intelligent but don't possess an ego.

Meaning they are indeed capable of superior processing but lack the shrewdness and cunning of humans. The way I look at it, if you were to let the AI in Ling Lan's new world control mechs then humans controlling the mechs opposite to them can easily wipe the floor with them. I mean AI can count the probability of which move is most likely to be made next but without ego, I doubt they'd be able to defend against human wickedness and tactics.

Also, I don't know how to make a spoiler tag so there are some minor spoilers below - nothing major that would spoil your fun.

I think in the novel the author has repeatedly stressed multiple times that only little four and others are AIs with ego.

All other AI systems in that world are egoless. Heck, she even outright made Little four cry about the fact that there's no one like him in that world. She highlighted it again by showing how excited little four becomes when he finds an AI with the potential to develop an ego as she is in the baby stage. Meaning the world in the book doesn't even know that AI's could even develop an ego! And the type of control over the mecha these reviewers who annoy me wrote is only possible by an ego developed AI. That means in the world Boss Lan is in right now, only Little four, the 9 teachers, little blossom (not sure since his powers are more on the destructive side) and the baby AI who was hoodwinked by little four on his way to the first men's military academy, can pilot a mech the way they are suggesting.

Also another thing - the humans currently have not just their physical body to control the mech they also awaken special powers that aid them in better perfecting their control and think about it - the world doesn't even know that AI's with ego could even exist let alone for them to reach the level of little four and the 9 instructors. I'm pretty sure the author has also clarified that little 4 comes from a world far more developed than Boss Lan's current world. So for the current AI development to reach little fours level it will take a really long time. Probably even after Boss lan's great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandchildren are born, the AI of that world will still not be able to reach Little fours standard. So I'm confused by those types of reviews....... have we not read the same book or has there been a glitch in the system?

It's not like I'm saying it's a flawless book, it has some issues like the nationalism disguised and placed in the book but you can just ignore it and try to enjoy the story. I just couldn't stand when some reviewers go on and on about the 'oh the AI can just control the mech, why waste 18years of your life training?' Like, have you not read properly? I mean the world is not a chessboard where you can make only a certain amount of moves and are bound by rules. Heck, a random variable can pop onto the board suddenly all because of something happening in the world outside of the board. For example in a chess game - in a battle between kings, Queens, Bishops, Knights and Rooks a f*cking Dragon could suddenly just appear to slaughter everyone on the board. So yeah AI could defeat humans if we are bound by rules but in a lawless world, I don't think they stand a chance unless they develop an ego.

Lastly for the newcomers do give it a try but don't expect it to be a typical female centred book you are used to reading. Romance is the last thing on the MC's mind plus due to her transmigration, she finds it hard to look at her peers as someone eligible for her, even after they've grown up.

Consider it in this way, if you are the older sibling or you know a kid since they were a toddler then despite how much they've grown or how capable and smart they are, you'll always wear those tinted glasses when you see them that makes you think they are still a little cute child that you need to protect. Boss Lan's feelings are exactly the same - so the romance is extremely delayed. Plus the thing I love about this book is that it doesn't conform to the rules we are used to seeing in real life or reading in books where the female always takes the submissive role. Yeah sure she dreams of giving birth to a healthy baby and being a mom, but that doesn't mean she'll act in the submissive way that women are portrayed in a lot. She may want to be a mom but she's still a Boss.

Sorry, I know my review might be confusing but I think after you read the novel you'll get my sentiment.

Also!!! To my fellow fujoshis and fudanshis I bear great news there exists a spark of bl between a pair side characters of the book!! I repeat there is a spark waiting to burst into flames between two male characters in this novel and the interactions between the two are so subtle and adorable but hard to find in first glance but when you do spot it you just can stop giggling!! So do give this book a try!! <<less

I’m not good at writing reviews so if you understand then good for you.

To start off I like this novel because of the refreshing MC, unlike other Chinese novels with a ML that contains harem and an extremely cringey story, or one that has a FL but she has a harem, it either revolves around romance, or the MC is entire purpose is revenge. On top of that, some stories with a cross dressing FL just ends up being romance because some ML decides that the MC is interesting.

Anyways just... more>> to remind you, if you’ve come here for romance I’m sorry to disappoint. I was reading through the comments and I think some of them were mad about the romance. THERE IS NO ROMANCE! There I said it... The author actually didn’t intent for there to be romance in the first place, it’s just that a certain person likes the FL and after that was revealed everyone though it was romance, there was even romance in some of the tags. I don’t know if this will change, I only know about this because on another website someone mentioned it.

I’m already on chapter 1482 and the story is amazing! I love the fighting scenes, and just the general story. I also like how the MC builds up their power over time, like it took 1400+ chapters just for the MC
Spoiler

.

And although I love how the MC is actually serious about keeping her identity a secret, I hope that she’ll be able to freely be the girl she is soon, but I’m very patient with these kinds of things so don’t worry girl keep your secrets 😉 I won’t tell no one.

The story might go a bit slow at first but please be patient! It’ll be worth it, oh yeah btw if you have trouble imagining characters, you can read the manhua first so you can give your brain some breathing room, I mean... I first started on the manhua. You just need to go to a manga site and search up “It’s not easy being a man after traveling to the future.”

Alright I’m dragging this on too long, anyways you should read this novel with some snacks, music, and some nice lighting! :>

So 5 stars, 10/100 would totally read it again, over and over and over- <<less

The story is bland and unimaginative. For a setting that takes place 10, 000 years in the future, the author really has nothing new to add. All the technology is just shiny versions of what we have today. Cars, except they fly; shopping malls except they display items as holograms. It is hard for me to paint an image of the world and the characters are all bland. This novel has no strong points.

For me, it's a love and hate relationship with this WN. The actual rate from me is 3.5 stars.

First, I must say thank you to a reviewer somewhere here that said you need to endure for the first 100 chapters. It was hard, because all the explanation about the world, the system then the introduction of many characters made me so hard to enjoy the story. This novel gives a detailed explanation for everything, a good world-building indeed. Then, after I managed to read past the 100th chapters, everything was... more>> paid for. I couldn't stop but to binge read and without I'm realizing it I was already at 500+ chapters. But I agreed that the author sometimes drags everything too long (most CN novels also like this too), I believe this was the reason why many CN novels are 1000+ chapters. Because of this I rarely read CN novels.

As for our main character, Ling Lan. She is a badass. I give her that. As a woman myself, I couldn't help but admire her effort. It was not easy to pose as a man when you're a woman. If the translation didn't use "she/her" I believe I would forget that Ling Lan is a woman and think of her as a man. I have many things to say about Ling Lan, too many that I'm afraid to overpraise her, so let's just end it with this: I like her so much.

The action and the mecha class in this novel quite good and the way the author combines cultivation/martial arts into the mecha was able to raise the tension of the story, for example when the battle took place in 890-900~ chapters.
Spoiler

I feel too nervous for Ling Lan when she decided to protect everyone with [belief] and almost puke because of the tension. Thank goodness that she was able to live.

[collapse]
I also read this because I didn't see romance as the main focus here, but then got disappointed because the romance even as a subplot enough to made me lost focus to read the story calmly (around 1000+ chapters). It was unreal if it didn't happen when most of them already at that age. I didn't mind but I think it will be better if the romance didn't happen. Even a little. Why?

If you were curious about my reason, then I will place all of my anger on one character.
Spoiler

Li Langfen. He really rubs me in the wrong way since the beginning. Fu*k. He's disgusting. I never met any character like him in my life. That bas*ard always upset me!

[collapse]

If I ignore the romance, everything about this web novel was really good and I give solid 4 stars. <<less

An amazing novel. Period. It opened a whole new world for me. The female protagonist is not a damsel in distress but a strong leader. She isn't downplayed by an OP male lead but she isn't OP either. The only good thing going for her is her system and little four. She is the literal queen of hard work! There isn't much romance in the beginning... around 1000 chapters maybe? It's still worth it though. The plot is amazing and the way the author incorporates low-key humour into the text... more>> makes it a beautiful journey.

Currently, it is my favourite novel. Although there are certain racist comments, like about the Caesar Empire, it is entirely justified. Ling Xiao almost died because of their plots! The nations are at war, obviously, people will be mad. The author doesn't highlight these issues or stand for them. She just shows how it is. In many nations during the 1800s, kingdoms were instilling nationalism into their people to mobilise them for war. A similar thing is at play here as well.

I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone and everyone who love a strong protagonist that values hard work and loyalty overall.

As for those who love romance...

Spoiler

Our male lead is Li Lanfeng or Li Mulan. He is the eldest son of the Li family. He appears quite early in the story when Ling Lan meets him in the virtual world in a mecha competition. They also practice together using beginner mechas!

Lanfeng notices his feelings only at about 1200th chapter or so. He is even willing to bend for Ling Lan.

It's one of my favourite novels. It kinda hurts because it's on a hiatus for more than a year. And the author is not even sure if they could continue with this work.

P.s. It's so good that it became the only Chinese novel I read till date where I actually remember almost all the characters name.

That good. Yes

P.s.s. Please member that sometimes to enjoy a good read keep your logic and common sense aside.

I’d give the first few hundred chapters a 4-5, but after that the quality RAPIDLY decreases.

The military portrayed in the novel is a joke. The entire country is a joke. By any sane logic and reason, they’d all be slaughtered by their enemies because of how incompetent and outright treacherous every officer at EVERY level is.

Military ranks mean nothing. People start sh*t with the main character, outright attacking him or his men inside friendly bases.. With no repercussions.

It’s a time of WAR. In any sane or cold lightly competent military,... more>> someone assaulting a superior officer, or even a soldier lower ranked than you would have you court martialed and likely executed.

The story goes from an interesting plot to outright bullsh*t like every other Chinese novel. Young masters and random people giving the MC sh*t and facing NO consequences.

Spare yourself the brain cancer and just put the novel in your tr*shbin. I think I’ve legit lost braincells reading this. <<less

I have been following this novel 2 years more or less. It doesn't lack anything in particular since it's already good enough for an action novel with female MC.

The only thing I wondered about is: did Madam Ru get pregnant so she couldn't touch her work weapon (keyboard) for months? I missed her chapters so much ?

I literally have no words to describe how breathtakingly amazing this novel is.

Anything and everything here includes most of my favorite such as gender bender (cross dressing), interstellar, comedy, adventure, action and much more!

Some novels skip the entire childhood of their main characters, but in here, we get lead through all of Ling Lan's life, from right after she died and became a fetus up until... an adult!

The suspension and excitement when we, as the audience, are the only ones who know of Ling Lan's secrets is super awesome, and... more>> every time one is about to be uncovered, my heart almost jumps out of my chest!

I've read a few novels that include these genres, but they were all either too "romantic" or too cliche, plus none of them weren't in the ancient or modern eras.

So it's quite nice to have a change of pace and experience something fresh and unique!

My biggest dilemma is the fact that I really want to know Ling Lan's friends reactions when they find our that their boss was actually a woman the entire time!

I've followed this novel for a long time already and believe it or not, it's definitely ranked in my top 3 best BG novels.

I just hope our author-sama comes out of her writer's block soon and presents us with more exciting adventures! <<less

If I would reference a book with the best character development, I'd choose this one...

The MC is not the only character we'd see grow, but also her friends, teammates, 'enemies', and even some passersby..

Though the setting was references to 10 000 years later, I am not still convinced by the culture (still set to the present time?), the language didn't change at all, some cultures/races are pretty obvious, ect...

... more>> The scientific development was too great tho... Each empire/colonies were stationed at particular planets...

The funny thing is that each planets were billions of lightyears apart, thus, creating also a difference in the "culture" of the people in each planet, some highly advanced, some still quite close to the present time...

Well the MC is quite OP, but her difficulties were not that detailed so readers will see her that way... She's ruthless to others and even more to herself, others only see her achievements and not her sufferings so they link it to her as an 'abberant genius'...

But I only wish to witness her and the other characters' development so I'd continue reading...

Up to others if they want to read but I'm highly recommending it... <<less

A bit racist, and a bit homophobic. And, except where the main character is concerned, a bit sexist. It's also as if the author doesn't quite have a handle on foreshadowing, some things you can tell are coming, and sometimes you're just told what's coming. But still very enjoyable.

This novel is extremely overrated, mediocre at best.

If you are coming here with high expectation due to the rating, and you don't have a "Female protagonist" or "Gender bender" fetish, do not expect too much, as those two tags are the only reason this is popular.

The plot is pretty linear, not many surprises, not much suspense as MC doesn't face real challenges/danger, and the comedy is pretty bland.

Overall 3/5, just average, but highly rated because it's an action novel with Female Protagonist who isn't completely ret*rded

The story so far isn't bad and even if Qidian has it under the "Ladies Pick" reccomendation, I believe it is more gender neutral with interesting setting and characters. But it isn't without faults and bad points and these are the reasons why I dedacted 1 star:

  1. The MC, while interesting, doesn't resonates alot with the reader because the author hides her reactions, behind a "mask" if you will, with a cold and expretionless face. And even though it is explained why, it makes the MC a little less interesting and if she didn't have great supporting characters the novel would be a lot worse.
  2. The author spoils her own story by constantly writing lines that say what will happen next and ruins great chances for dramatic or comedic reveals.
    Spoiler

Like saying that the dead father would return or spoiling future enemies and exploits that she has on her academy and military years

    [collapse]
But it has many good points that makes it worth reading like

  • great supporting characters
  • although a little problematic the MC is better than the stereotypical MC in chinese novels
  • the story so far is interesting and funny
and more little things that someone could find and like.

I really liked this novel to begin with, but now that we've run into the Twilight Empire, I feel incredibly awkward reading the very 2-D characterization of the enemy (aka Japan). I've basically skimmed all those chapters. Blatant nationalism aside, it's really difficult to understand how an enemy so incompetent could possibly achieve space travel in the first place, and the thrown-in Japanese sounds just... super childish. I wouldn't mind a more nuanced portrayal of evil Japan in space, but the author is so heavy-handed that I just cannot like... more>> it. There's nothing I hate more by being preached at by my fantasy books, even when I sympathize with the viewpoint. <<less
