Personally I think that till his ascending from his original planet this novel was great, somewhat dark but still good except the romance part (it is pure sh*t), yeah and that he just kill people without a care if they are innocent or not for his own satisfaction. The MC is not some 2D character who just does anything and can do everything from the beginning, he starts as naive teenager and acts like one, he grow up and get influenced by those around him, his personalty become somewhat distorted... more>> later but it's reasonable after all the sh*t he goes through (At least he's not some psycho teenager who basically suffered nothing more than most people in normal life but end up killing anyone even his schoolmates for any d*mn reason without batting an eye). The plot and characters were developing somewhat logically

After that story started to go downhill, not immediately but slowly till I really couldn't bear it and dropped the novel.

Spoiler

For example THE GREAT MC was angry that some race pretend to be gods and kill INNOCENT (as he say) cultivators whom he didn't even know or has any connection to on a whim. For those who read the novel remember this f***** kills a whole family or sec when someone get in his way. To get revenge he searched everywhere in his old country and killed EVERYONE that has ANY connection to the guy who killed his parents, Literally EVERY F**** ONE, no matter the age, gender, close or distant as long as there is any kind of connection no matter how small it's they should die.

Later the writer will try to portray the MC as hero who is supposed to save the humanity. This selfish cold blooded f***** a hero?

Another part that totally got on my nerves is that a woman he f*cked tormented her unborn child over the two hundred years just to leave a mark in his heart and later the writer will try make her (her main body) look like a good person and actually has feeling to him and wants to make it up for the child (whom was supposed to be died but was resurrected).

[collapse]

Also after reading cultivation novels I knew why dead people shouldn't come back to life in novels especially in serious or tragic novels, few writers can handle such plot well. It just make things unnecessarily complicated and destroy the whole mood of the story. Like when someone die and characters become overly sad and dramatic all I feel is he/she just going on a vacation to hell for few days and coming back why are you overreacting. <<less

To be honest, this novel has many holes and math errors. If I were to evaluate it purely in a technical way, my grade would not be maximum,
But, the general story is so good that you ignore any mistake you come across, it's the typical case of "love is blind"

The protagonist is not born a ruthless mu*derer, he becomes one to survive, he does not do good deeds simply to look like a hypocritical hero after committing a massacre, but he still has a moral side, not enough... more>> to make him a hypocrite, but... human, after all even the most cruel of terrorists loves their family <<less

This is a very good novel. Though there are flaws, the writing is still very good. If you were looking for romance, twist your neck right now and look away! This novel does not focus on romance at all. This novel is worth it.

Doing away with the recommendation, I found that this novel has many applications to real life. I won't tell you anything since it would be a deterrent from reading the novel. Additionally, I was a little sad that I finished RI. I wished that there was a... more>> little more to the story and to the interactions between MC and MW. (Main Wife) However, I understand that it would be hard to write without making the story feel dragged on. So, without further ado, I submit my humble review, ending my karma with this novel now...

Will I choose to forget or not... <<less

This was a pretty good novel. The story starts off fairly dark but gets less gloomy the further along it goes. I read I Shall Seal the Heavens before this so I had a general idea of what happens to the MC. I would recommend reading this story first if you want to start the "Ergenverse" set of stories.

The author does an excellent job of keeping side characters relevant throughout the story and it the story itself stays mostly coherent. The ending feels rushed but if you are reading Wuxia... more>> novels, how is this not to be expected?

The MC stays consistent with his personality in the story, but I feel like there is good character growth with him. He is kind of generic but I was ok with that. The romance in the story is absolute garbage and this feels like the author's weakest point when it comes to writing.

I would recommend this story, it is kind of long and halfway through I took a fairly long break before finishing it. After completing it I am glad I didn't drop it. <<less

I liked ISSTH and was expecting this to be great too. It started off great and then kinda became so-so it isnt repetitive and there were many good things that I liked but the writing felt lazy where the characters would blurt out what they were doing as they did it kind of like they the characters themselves unconsciously know they are in a novel. I beared with it cause I know this was the author's first work but what made me drop this was because I started disliking the... more>> MC. I was put off by the MC worshipping and him looking down on his enemies which made him for me just like those arrogant monsters that he previously defeated. He became just like everybody else around him which made me lost interest in his journey. I also became sad because of the heaven defying bead which started the whole journey to begin with became just a background thing where you would look at it but didnt have any particular use around the chapter I was at. The novel is creative but maybe if I had read this before ISSTH I wouldve liked it more. <<less

This is a slow read, lots of times you just want to blow through chapters as most of then are so repetitive and predictable but there are gems in the mortal moments that just kinda brings tranquility in you when reading those chapters. It's a mixed bag of boring and profound.

Classic Er Gen.

Finished reading ISSTH and tried this out. So far so good.

MC becomes quite raw/cruel, but has principles.

Same general "power" world as ISSTH, overall good time.

God, Been reading this novel since practically my entire xianxia career. Renegade immortal, is an amazing novel.
It has it's rough spots but overall it's a beautiful work.
Romance might be.... well yikes. But he eventually works on that, and it's been a blessing to watch Er gen grow from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I think I'm starting to get the hang of this".
Action, drama, character growth, Love, hate, Joy and tragedy are all elements of this novel. Eventually... you're gonna look back at that one... more>> villain or one s*upid moment and realize... how far we've gone.
Writing is excellent, enough said.
I hope for others to be able to sincerely read this in the future and enjoy it.
As I have myself. <<less

This novel was good earlier on, we got a calm protagonist and a good story. Later it transform in your tipical xianxia young-master never ending loop and what could've been made in 100 chapters took 500, also the romance sucks but its Er gen so its okay as his novels are so good that u can ignore the romance part. But the problem is that :
Spoiler

Li Muwan (Waifu) dies and then its a never-ending road to revive her which takes about 1500 chapters. That friends is insane

Dont need to read more, i've read enough. We all know that most author want to give MC lot of "handicap" in the beginning before becoming OP. Orphan, poor, disabled vein etc. In this case, it's a nerd (bookworm). Without knowing what is cultivation, suddenly aiming to become an immortal.

The story is ridiculously inconsistent at times, but it's still enjoyable. The author is pretty daring and allows important characters to die.

The story is pretty realistic. Everything is absolutely ruthless, the protagonist included. I fell for a lot of ploys myself and eventually treated everything that was said to the protagonist as a lie.

Also, the romance is garbage. Ignore all of it. <<less

All of all the novels, I have read, this one is possibly one of my favourites. You know, I usually like stories with op mcs, this however, was kind of a different tatse. The protagonist isn't op from the very start, from what I have heard, he slowly gets op instead. This usually bothered me, but somehow, this novel managed to avoid that feeling. It slowly builds up the story, it even took quite a while for him to reach the first level of cultivation, somehow, I didn't stop reading... more>> and continued on. I like it, so far. <<less

Hesy There...

I am new here as a novel reader, so I dont have so much understanding about novel I only had read a few novel like MGA, PMG and of course all novel from Er Gen (RI, ISSTH, PotT, and AWE)..

Actually Renegade Immortal is the First novel I read, it started when I over-curiosity about the story of the its Manhua (arc. when Wang Lin got Killed by that old Teng Hua), so I search in google and found that it actually adopted from Novel...

so, since then I keep update... more>> reading RI until I meet last chapter. so, I also began to read one of Er Gen novel (ISSTH) wich was complete on wuxia..

So, about RI I cant really determine its the best novel ever.. but as a beginner of novel reader I really love RI (include all Er Gen Novel).. its just amazing on how PLOT and SCHEME are brilliant, how we never get boring on the Story-Line, and how from beginning til now we keep our heart skip a bit of how our MC keep struggle on his path of cultivation.. its really wonderful and great story to keep us reader curios of what would happen next.... But sometime I rather pity for our MC. He keep fight and struggle for his safety and his path for cultivation.. but there is almost never he feel how wondrous its feeling for have a piece day with his beloved Wan'er.. once he reunite with Wan'er she already dying.. I even cant hold my tear drop-down on that arc...

Hope he will meet his happiness later on.

(sorry for bad ENGLISH) :) <<less

Out of all the xianxia novels being translated right now, this is one of the best. The MC isn't very talented but thanks to his intelligence and a mysterious treasure he manages to become a cultivator. The MC isn't as comically clever as some other Er Gen MC's like Meng Hao (ISSTH) or Bai Xiaochun (AWE) though and the novel is very different from ISSTH or AWE because of that. The story and characters are interesting and nuanced. Overall I would say that Renegade Immortal is a very enjoyable read... more>> and I would highly recommend it. <<less

Renegade Immortal is in its essence a true cultivation story. It is unlike your typical xianxia where the MC is just an idiot who becomes the strongest through some dumb luck. Everyone in this world is cunning, brutal, and cruel in their own way that displays what would indeed be a realistic cultivation world. And the growth of the MC who is thrown into this world, as he changes and adapts so he can become strong, taking risks to defy the heavens, can be really exciting and sometimes almost heart-wrenching.... more>> All in all, great novel, I really recommend this to anyone whether they are a veteran or a person who never read xianxia novels before.

As always, Er Gen's novel always keep me intrigued and help me get up in the morning or stay up at night waiting for releases no matter which of his novels, including Renegade Immortal! Although it is much more serious compared to his other novels being translated at WuxiaWorld, it does a fantastic job at bringing in readers, keeping them in suspense during fights and plot developments, and has some of the best cultivator to mortal arcs I've ever read... period.

Like every Er Gen novel RI takes time to build up story, character and pace, however once everything is set and ready to go, you are in for a ride. The momentum keeps on building and it only gets better and better. Wang Lin (MC) ’s character is the best out of like 50+ webnovels I have read so far-cold, calculating, decisive and scheming. Every new chapter just makes the story better and I was never once disappointed. The only thought after everytime I read renegade immortal is, “ MORE,... more>> MORE, MORE!!!” <<less

Whew, it really has been a Long run, since reading this novel years back, those whom still remember, in the pass Renegade only posts twice per week on Saturday and Sunday, Luke and Rex both tackle the novel themselves, time files! But let’s get on with it! So far the at the point where I read, the world is so huge, there is so many things that could occur that leaves my imagination to run wild! I really recommend anyone who is reading this now, to give it a try... more>> and don’t give up early in the story, sometimes it might confuse or frustrate you, but just continue and you will be amazed. One of my best takeaway I love regarding this novel is how the author doesn’t forget the past issues that have been left hanging, it give me a feeling that the author kept in mind the whole picture, and doesn’t leave holes in the story. Well, it is my most favourite story I follow nowadays! Good job Rex!

This is by far the best novel I've read, I still remember wang lin when he climb that mountain, so he can get into heng yue sect, and he met his friends, killed teng something, gets his family killed, and so on...

His life is not the same as generic MC, where MC almost always win against enemy, I would say his life is a traedy, heck I even cried when he was talking to his brother (this happens in recent chapter) about his life, about what could he get if he didn't cultivate up till now, about what is he chasing by cultivate, about how he lost every single f**kin things that matters to him. Er gen is really good at touching our hearts. I can't make a long review cause I'm on my phone rn, but I realllllyyy recommend this novel.
