First of all I love love love GDC and scumbug system... that's what prompted me to look for her next project but to my disappointment it was as though someone else wrote it and just used her name cause damn.... the novel is a messssss. The overview is very enticing and the characters are great as well but it feels like the writer was just not there yet... the comedy was lacking.... most things felt childish to me.... Whoever wrote this could well be a kid somewhere learning to write....... more>> cause this is like 10% of what GDC was....I opened an account just to vebt.... so I am just going to say.... maybe they should sit and redo the whole book and publish it again cause it was exceedingly long and I read it cause of the writer but it just doesn't do her justice..... like everything is there..... use it... the characters are great and the whole heavenly being with a demon is also very enticing but oh my God.... the out come is just sad. So please..... if this can reach whoever wrote this book.... please... please don't go spoling good plots. Thank you. Other wise thanks for GDC and Scumbug system... <<less

It's an okay novel. I rated it a 2.0.

In a nutshell, Hua Cheng and Xie Lan's relationship is underwhelming to say the least however that wasn't what put me off the novel.... what really made me mad was the way Xie Lan, the MC was depicted in the novel.

The amount of times Xie Lan frustrated me due to the way the author established him as a character really put me off.

If your going to do a typical MC who's an annoyingly holy saint, make it make sense. I'm tired of... more>> 2D cookie cutter MC's who could have had 3 generations of their family mu*dered and they are like "I forgive you because I'm sooo pure and virtuous".

Xie Lan and Hua Cheng have an almost shallow existence in the novel polluted by an almost unbearable attitude of morality on Xie Lan's part that's flawed at best and made an otherwise okay novel terrible.

I wanted to like this novel but the MC & ML needed to be fleshed out more.

Although I enjoy the authors style of writing (its descriptive and imaginative), the characters made me wanting more....

I think this novel could do with improving the dynamics between characters.... at the end of the day I couldn't see myself rallying behind a lot of characters simply due to their plain existences..... where is the flavor.... <<less

My rating is a 4 but I feel like it is 3.5 but I do like the main couple

I've read all 3 of the author's books. I've read this one 2 times, first time as it was being translated and 2nd time when it's finish so I can binge it in one go. While I love the setting she's going for, an ancient world with mysterious heavenly court, gods, and demons, I feel like this novel is much weaker than her previous novel MDZS and that is unfortunate because the... more>> main couple is very cute but it cannot make you ignore the novel other weak points.

The 1st thing is that beside the focus on the main couple, the side characters receive VERY LITTLE development. Many of them are interesting characters on their own with their own issues but by the end of the book, those issues were barely resolved.

Spoiler

The bodyguards are still fighting like cat and dog. The senior and junior brothers never talked out their issues. The goblin is still obnoxious af. They never really grew and become better people

[collapse]

The 2nd biggest thing for me is how the author handled the water demon arc. Like some people has complain on other reviews, the author put one of the most well-liked character through hell and never paid any attention to them until the end.

Spoiler

the worst is that for someone who is suppose to be their friend and has such messiah complex that, there's no mention of MC trying to help him afterward even in the background. I guess they just accept he will live out his life like hobo?

[collapse]

The worst part is that my favorite character is fish boy and I want to see how he feels about finally getting his revenge. The writing imply there were affections even with the years of pretending and lying but after that arc I guess he just yeet off to the sea and we don't need to hear anything about him because lOOk hOw cUtE tHe CoUPLe iS

If you are a fujo and your brain is only filled with hot gay couple to heavy breath to then you'll enjoy the book fine. The main couple's interactions are very cute. It is more subtle of the ML pursuing the MC until the MC realize he has feelings for him too. It's sweet. I don't get people complaining about it needing to be more obvious or steamy. You know p*rns also exist if you need it?

If it was not for these underdeveloped writing then I would give it higher eating. The author has very good world building with lots of potential, but she should get over her ego and write proper story instead of sabotaging characters development to make main couple looks better. <<less

I have read grand master of demonic cultivation few weeks ago and I find this a lot better than that. Story-line is a lot better, better characters, the created world is also much more fascinating.

I think hua cheng is a true example of the most devoted and selfless lover and a creepy stalker at the same time.

I fell in love with his character immediately from the very beginning, his love was soo pure and he had a veryyyy cool character.

story is very very very good. It's mysterious, some times thrilling,... more>> sometimes funn, some times like horror movie. Characters are not flawless which is a very good thing for me. It's long but it's really worth the time. First few chapters are a little boring, but when the story picks up you cant put the book down.

I am not one of those people who cry for everything, I barely cry for things not related to my real life. But I cried for this book. It's just amazing.

Male protagonist is not an idiot, he is smart, strong and self-sufficient. Huacheng (ml) always treats him with a lot of respect and he isn't one of those abusive type lovers. ML is quiet obsessed in his love for the protagonist but he is quiet selfless, no matter how much he wants him, he'd rather die than hurt him. He always thinks that he is not good enough for him so he just protects him without confessing his love. <<less

shjhjkhjkhjkjhjkjhjj OK!!

This was by far the longest chinese novel I have ever read. (Seriously !!200+ chapters!!) Honestly after reading my first chinese novel mo da zu shi, I got addicted. Call me fujoshi or whatever but I really got into it. Never had I thought that I would be a sucker for this ancient-chinese-i-want-more-drool-worthy-heart-thumping-eye-bulging-omg-i-gotta-hold-my-pee-until-i-finishhhh kinda yaoi novel. But meh. I am truly blessed to have found them and read them all.

This novel, honestly, was truly long. (It shook me to my core.) At first, I was really hesitant to... more>> read this novel. As a lazy person who gets bored quickly, I truly didn't want to read it and later find it too long to continue. I didn't want to take such a hassle. However now, I am so much happy that I decided to read it. Honestly I wouldn't have had it the other way.

This heaven's official blessing was in a sense truly a blessing to me. (Ok ok lets not be so cliche.)

At first I was dumbstruck and awed at the same time. I couldn't believe the difficulty, the shame, the pain, the humiliation, the MC went through. It was so pitiful and I just couldn't bare to read another chapter in fear of what would happen to him. No one would have survived what he survived. Even as a god one couldn't escape their suffering. *Sigh*

I cannot say if it was like damsel in distress or overpowered hero who saves his lover again. But the "Crimson rain sought flower" waited 800 years (God! 800!!!) to be with him. And not just be with him, it was to protect him. Even if it meant dying. It was his sole purpose. His true believer. (TOT) The plot in itself was enough for me to stick around like moth to a flame. (Now im just exaggerating it) Its awkward beginning and the mystery surrounding the whole story, got me wanting more.

I love it. I cant even begin to fully express what emotions I felt while reading this novel. There is just too much. From the scene that I wanted to fangirl, to the scene that made me have goosebumps. HOF in every sense of way quenched my thirst of addiction. (Lol I sound creepy. I swear I'm not usually like this.)

However *ahem* it didn't quite quench my fujoshi thirst on *ahem* *ahem* you know what*ahem* *ahem* (sorry!! I just really wanted them to have some special scene like in mo dai zu shi. And to read 200+ chapters and still only get "taking spiritual power" is so not fair!!!)

But overlooking that fact. This novel will always have a place in my heart. Of course! I'm not saying that this is the best novel to ever exists. Im simply stating how I feel about it. And how it was my best experience in reading this novel.

Thanking you,

I wanted to like this... and I just don't.

At this point of the story (Finished the 2nd book of the English translation), I don't care for the characters and the story itself. I don't find any of it engaging. This doesn't necessarily mean the book is objectively bad, but it's certainly not my cup of tea.

While I will finish the story and try to keep an open mind, I do believe TGCF will likely remain my least favorite of MXTX's books.

So far there's nothing that draws me into this book. I've finished the 1st book/volume and yet there's nothing memorable about it. I'm hoping this will change over time.

The only character I've come to enjoy is Qi rong (the cousin of the MC). However, I can already tell there won't be a good end for him.

After 130 chapters into this novel, I give up. Nevermind that the concept on which this novel is based makes me uncomfortable, the novel is really boring.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was the first danmei I've ever read and very memorable for me. It had an interesting plot, great comedy, and some really relatable and well-written side characters/stories. Yet, there are some major problems that stop me from rating it higher. I want to give it at least 4 stars but some areas are truly lacking.

My problem with this series is mainly the main characters and the romance/relationship.

The ML is basically just the ideal love interest. Loyal, respectful, and attractive. But his whole character really... more>> just boils to him being unconditionally in love with the MC. Other than being in love/idolizing the main character, he has no other major defining trait to him. It’s cute, but also incredibly shallow. He was written to cater to the audience. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, it wasn't done well as I found his "love" to be quite forced and even artificial. A lot of his actions were... questionable and his general attitude was “I don’t give a sh*t about anything or anyone other than Xie Lian”. It’s romantic, sure, but also bland and boring. I felt that the justification that the author gives for his adoration of the MC was insufficient. I didn't find myself caring much about him.

There was a part in his character that the author could’ve fleshed out, but it was just skimmed over.

The MC is more well written, but not that interesting. He often comes off as a “Mary Sue” who can do no wrong and never loses his temper.
Spoiler

I understand his backstory, but I simply didn't feel that emotionally invested in his character given his current personality.

[collapse]

When you put these two characters together as the main couple, I just can’t look past the flaws.
Spoiler

Hua Cheng being madly in love and dedicated to Xie Lian for 800 years? I know this is fiction but it’s unrealistic. Has he never had any doubts about his idol? Has he ever found someone else? Hua Cheng sees everything Xie Lian does as right and it borders on unhealthy. If it weren't for the fact that Xie Lian was written to be perfect, there would’ve been so many problems with their relationship.

[collapse]
I know this is fantasy, but the complete lack of realism creates a very flat relationship. Their relationship is mainly built off of the ML's unrelenting adoration. He never truly takes Xie Lian off the pedestal that he puts him on to actually evaluate and get to know him.

On a happier note, I actually really enjoyed the side characters, especially with their own depth, nuance, backstories, and relationships. The side characters were well-written and multilayered and I felt much more connected to them.

Basically, it was an entertaining read with adorable fluffy moments (and some good angst), but the second I think about it critically, I see how flawed it was. Personally, I couldn’t feel myself feeling too invested in the main characters and it was hard to fully love this novel. <<less

I just finished reading the novel, it's so beautiful, tragic and wonderful.

I have a pure soft spot for romances that last hundreds of years. That whole waiting for that ONE person for such a long period- my heart :'-)

TGCF is genuinely such a wonderful story. TGCF is more than a BL novel. It's a novel that shows human imperfections, humanity, letting go of past traumas, overcoming insecurities and most importantly, learning to love yourself. TGCF is about humanity was written in the perspective of a god.

It's freaking awesome!! A lot of people talked about Mo dao zu shi, and you can't blame them.... That wo was really really an epic, though being only her second book... And Mxtx is only getting better with time.... Her progress is really exponential, I really love the base characters and the story that is like flowing water, I would suggest anyone to read this book, regardless of what you think, this is indeed a book that is satisfying the anticipated expectations of a readers heart and going much... more>> further than that... I am being honest when I say that this is one of the most fluid and elegant books I've ever read in my life..... this is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed from the bottom of my heart, and I hope that you do so too. If you are not certain whether to read it or not, I would say go for it, trust me it would be worth your while.

Disappointing.

Now don't get me wrong, this was a very enjoyable and entertaining journey, but still, I was majorly disappointed.

  1. There are so many lovable characters, each having their own awesome backstories, awesome personalities, and overall awesome character. But then they're not given good character development, enough appearances, or are just thrown to the side for the rest of the novel. Like, what's the use of giving so much potential to so many characters if you're not going to put it to good use??
  2. What the hell was that final fight? Like what the actual duck? It felt like some low-quality kid's show.
  3. So many arcs, yet not all of them ended properly (*Cough* Black-Water Arc *cough*)
  4. We don't see how Hua Cheng became the way he is (personality-wise and ability-wise), and I can't help but feel like his present character is that of the Male Lead in a fanfiction written by a 12-year-old girl.
  5. I was hyped for the extras because I thought that maybe, just maybe, I could get some stories about the side characters. But alas, they're all about implied interc**rse between the ML and MC and situations that circle back to implied interc**rse or how their love for each other is ever so burning brightly.
  6. Spoiler

What the hell happened to Shi QingXuan? He just magically appears again and turned into a hobo with a lame leg and arm. Absolutely no explanation whatsoever.

    [collapse]
  7. Spoiler

Why do I not see anyone talking about how Qi Rong literally ran away while threatening to kill a CHILD while Xie Lian turned his back to them to take care of his dear San Lang? Like the kid was crying and was hurt, yet Xie Lian just forgot about them the moment he saw San Lang in pain.

    [collapse]
  8. I read BL to get away from cliche shoujo tropes, yet this book is full of it. Maybe it's your cup of tea, but it's definitely not mine.
  9. Kissing without consent isn't sexy <3 and accepting the fact that your first kiss was stolen by someone so easily is also a turn-off.
  10. Comedy may not be a strong point, but it definitely is there, and it works.
  11. Spoiler

The ending was incredibly dissatisfying. The trope where "the villain was actually the top dog of the cultivation world and was responsible for all the 'coincidences in MC's life'"doesn't work well here. It's too large-scaled compared to MDZS, it feels too unrealistic.

    [collapse]
Overall, I think the novel has so many good points, but still somehow managed to mess it up.

I have been postponing to read this novel because I saw a review that says the writing is bad this time. That in MDZS, the flashbacks are put gradually while this has a book just for flashbacks.

That's true, but when I finally read it, I discovered that it wasn't a problem for me. To me, that didn't affect the quality of this novel. Now I regret having my feelings swayed by that review. Maybe because to that person, it's a con. To me it's neither positive nor negative.... more>> So if you don't mind that at all, go ahead and read it.

Some say XL is bland, OP, and not true to his character. Sorry but here's my opinion.

(Some mild spoilers, sorry but I need to include them and I cannot separate them from non spoilers)

    1. There is a difference between being an OP with basis, and being OP out of nowhere (being OP when you think of your nakamas for example). As you can see, XL was born with all the right parameters. He was wealthy, had the ambition, had the wits, and was strong. His thinking was good too, (he always have the so-called "third path"). At some point, he might have been OP, but it was not without a basis. And without those though, it would be not easy to ascend. So think of it as this: The author didn't make XL OP, but the author had chosen him to be the protag precisely because of his qualities (think of him as a significant figure who existed and, now his life is being portrayed on movies). Besides, he even needs to borrow spiritual energy from time to time. And in the whole novel, he never really had to fight strong creatures like Ghost Kings frequently
      Spoiler

he just had to fight White No-Face during the fall of Xianle and at the end of the novel

      [collapse]
that doesnt mean he became too weak because of those. One of those just seals his own spiritual energy. So if he were to borrow... ? Having to borrow is a disadvantage for him already, and I dont see how that is OP. Conveniently borrowing spiritual energy isn't equal to being OP.
    2. Bland, what is being bland? No flavour? Generic? For me he's not bland. He's a gray character, has flaws even. Do we want white characters now? Like if there was a war between two nations and White character's nation is doomed, he would definitely be portrayed as a hero that will lead the revolution and defeat the enemies and not care about them, trample them completely. But would Xie Lian do that? If you read the novel, you know very well what he would do. If by bland you mean generic, then sorry but I disagree, he's not. This character became a protag despite having flaws. That itself it unusual. But highly realistic. And that's what's makes him interesting. He said he will save the common people, but that was back then. Now he denies that he said that. So why are some reviewers here are saying " he said he will save the common people but he's not doing it anymore?" Well there's that, he said it himself too, and he kinda realized that at some point, "he had the heart, but he didn't have the means." (he can't) See? If it's the usual white protag, he would be able to save the common people indeed with the power of "nakama" or something. But XL wasn't able to. Those qualities make him flavorful IMO. People think it's bland because he's balanced. No overpowering flavour. Hes got the taste, it's just that when take a sip of him, everything is in perfect harmony inside your mouth, no flavour stands out because they cancel out each and everyone. But is that bland? Ofc not.
Regarding Hua Cheng:

  • Yes, it's hard to ascend and become a God, but IMO, becoming a Supreme is harder. If I were to ask you to do good, cultivate, and become a master in Taoism (or do something very significant in general) to achieve great power VERSUS take another path and that is to born just to be misfortunate, experience great suffering and turn into a ghost after you die, and then, to be a supreme ghost, experience suffering again, and if you don't pass that, your soul will dissipate into nothingness, what will you choose? Of course becoming a god is easier than being a supreme, but I'm not saying it's easy. Can't you tell? Why do people desire to be gods than being a supreme? Because 1. If you become a god, it's like a good thing. It's like an achievement. But if you become a ghost king (supreme) even tho you're not doing anything wrong, it's already a bad thing to some. That's why people choose to ascend. So what's my point? My point is, this is why Ghost Kings are "OP"cause no one is willing to take the risk they chose to take, and that is probably their "reward". Besides, experiencing great suffering (as in living in the lawless and survival of the fittest - - GHOST REALM) will definitely make someone stronger.
  • Some people here also say that Gods and Ghost kings are natural enemies. Not really. Heavenly officials were afraid of HC and considered him as an enemy cause of what he did to them.
    Spoiler

He challenged the 35 of them and defeated 33 of them

    [collapse]
. This isn't like your usual shounen show where gods and devils are sworn enemies. It just so happens that the heaven itself had corrupt characters and someone had to step in. Besides, if person A has belief A, and person B has belief B, wouldn't they go clashing at some point ? So, the heaven and ghost realms might be enemies at some point, but it's not a taboo for them to become friends. Like I said, this isn't a shounen show where the protag thinks that devils are his enemies but then discovers that he's a devil himself and becomes crazy since heaven and hell are sworn enemies (accdg to him). In this novel, it just so happens that there is a realm for people who achieved greatness, and there is a realm for people who have fallen and suffered. That doesn't mean they're sworn enemies.
  • As for HC's possessiveness, IMO, HC has the right to feel like that, considering that he saw everything about XL. I dont say it's right or wrong. But that can be attributed as HC's "flaw" which makes him a "human". He's not your perfect male lead that only exists in generic fiction.
All in all, I personally like these characters. They're like a puzzle that fits together. Sometimes, one of them has an overbearing personality, but the other accommodates. Theyre not balanced in a sense that theyre 50:50 in character, but in a sense that, if one is 70, then the other is 30.

As for the loose ends, the main point of this novel are the two main protags. The author prolly didnt intend to talk about those heavenly affairs anymore. Think of it like this: those affairs were just included in this novel because they have something to do with the main charas, in order for us to understand them better. Besides at the end, there were hints and clues about the aftermath. For example, about Guzi,
Spoiler

XL asks about Guzi to Lang Qianqiu, hinting that Guzi will prolly stay with Qianqiu in the future

[collapse]
also, this is prolly the author's intention. Kinda like an open ending with hints.

So dear reader, if you are still doubting on reading this. Please dont. Just read it and don't nitpick too much. Enjoy. :)

If you like:

  • To cry;
  • Stories with lots of drama;
  • Romances where the person is completely devoted to the beloved;
  • Characters who suffer;
  • Plots well done.
READ TO THE END!

If you DON'T LIKE stories with heavy drama I don't recommend it. Because the novel was made to make the reader feel sorry and cry feeling the pain of the MC. I am particularly passionate about well-made stories that make me cry in pain for the characters.

If you like it, I invite you to read this novel. After I finished reading, I can't even talk about the... more>> MC's life, and the romance between MC and ML, that I start to cry.

For me, HOB is perfect and is the masterpiece of MXTX. The story, the romance, the characters, the way the events are presented to the reader, everything is perfect.

Other observations:

  • Of the three MXTX novels, HOB is the biggest one. So the beginning of HOB is a little slower than the other two. But keep reading and when you get to the end you will want to read everything again hahaha
  • About the ML: I have seen few comments saying that ML is a stalker, that he acts creepy, etc. I totally DISAGREE with that. ML is completely in love with MC. He is perfect. I honestly don't know how anyone can dislike ML or MC. Unfortunately, if even God couldn't please everyone, also MXTX couldn't.

Shame on you who's still strolling through the reviews not reading the novel, you uncultured swine.

You'll give your heart to this story, and the story will stamp on it, throw it around and shatter it on the ground, until giving it a little peck before it leaves as the ending nears. And your masochistic heart will be moaning the entire time.

Also Hua Cheng (ML) best boy. And an actual healthy (but not easy) relationship wtf.

A lil plot hole (shenqingqiu we need you) ... more>>
Spoiler

what tf happened to our wind boy after his bro's death, how did he end up with the beggars?

[collapse]
but honestly who even cares at this point. Never though I'd say that about plot holes. Also Mxtx usually fills them up after a while (like with mdzs), and this is only one hole so who knows. <<less

If you're going in for a cute fluffy BL romance, then think again.

The whole thing is angst and cringy humour sprinkled all over with a red thread of pure love that was baked patiently for 800 years wrapped around it.

In other words: the perfect mix.

It won't be an exaggeration to say that Heaven Official's Blessing has everything; it has gods, immortals, ghosts, ghost kings, battle scenes, cultivation, cute moments that will warm your cold black heart. Honestly, the comedy alone was enough to hook me up at first. Like all... more>> of MXTX's works, you might laugh out loud at some point making people around question your mental health.

I find so much hate on this novel for no apparent reason. The plot is kind of slow at the begining that I lost interest many times but around the second book out of five, it made me going 20+ chapters per day.

  • Characters lack depth, they say? I've never seen (in my tiny experience with the genre) a BL's MC as deep as Xie Lian. He has a gentle nature but he can be a nasty badass when he feels like it. He also has a Mary Sue's aura but it eventully dissipates as the story progresses and you'll wave your hand exclaiming "Nah! he's as flawed as the rest of us if not more." (Seriously, the man's bad luck is legendary that you'll feel bad laughing at him.). Another thing I love about the story is that there's next to non-existant typical cannon fodder characters running about. Every character has a background and a certain depth. Espicially Mu Qing, Jun Wu, Ling Wen and He Xuan those fantastic four had me in the narrow space between strong disgust and pure admiration. I have something for grey characters.
  • MC and ML's relationship lacks tension and depth? Excuse me but... have you like... accidentally missed the whole novel? It's tension all over! At least from MC's POV. Hualian is cannon but that doesn't mean their relationship will be any less interesting and bumpy. Both lost too much and fell too deep. Both suffered tremendously. Both rolled through the mud and kept on going for a reason. ML's devotion is so pure and sincere (a bit creepy, though. Who stalks their crush for 800 years?) You insolent mortal dare call that boring?
  • It's not as good as MDZS?
Well, can't argue with that one but just because it's the same author doesn't mean you have to compare. Walk in with no expectations and you'll win. TGCF has a fair share of suspense and investigation but unfortunately it can't surpass MDZS in that field. It was still quite interestimg to see MXTX writing about gods and heavens for a change. I found the whole thing about those gods taking strength from their loyal believers prayers quite beautiful; the strong protects the powerless while the powerless provides that strength. Perfect harmony. <<less

I really ended up enjoying this book a lot. It was extremely painful to read. There were parts that were boring but a lot of exciting parts that made up for it as well.
