The story starts off slow and dark but trust me it'll all be worth it as you keep on reading.

The plot is so deep!! Like every little thing that happens is crucial, every character the MC meets is crucial, none of that random rumbling OP BS. It's all about building the plot and characters.

You'll love it.

Initially I was not interested in reading this novel due to low review's. Found out reviews can't be trusted as it is.

After finishing I shall seal the heavens, I wanted to read more of Er Gen and I decided upon A Will Eternal. I caught up with the release then came to this novel.

It's a really great novel. Sure it's different and the MC is more ruthless. But that adds to the character and the story is really good.

I have read a lot of xianxia novels filled with cliches and whatnot but this is the first one that truly felt genuine. Renegade immortal doesn't have good or evil or hero or villain, it's like an entire world so meticulously build that you feel like you are not reading the novel you are living it. The protagonist in this world doesn't always win and every action comes with a consequence. All in all a masterpiece.

This novel is pretty refreshing to read since there's not many well written (at least for a web novel) novels where the main character is completely alone without any friends/teachers. Wang Lin doesn't have any connections or treasures, other than one. Although people say this novel is dark, its just because they have only read the happy go lucky novels where everything is handed to the main character and nothing bad ever happens to them.

I came to this novel because I wanted to know more about the "god" wang ling mentioned in ISSTH, and... I was shocked.

The protagonist seems a lot more real to me than a lot of other ones, the way he is gradually becoming a demon even though he was but a child at the start and the way the characters interact between them.

It has clearly marked arcs, so you probably can remember a general outline of the entire story, something I can't do with ISSTH, so you miss a lot... more>> less of details (and there are a lot of them, spicing up the story)

Of course it has cliches but ¿What novel doesn't? <<less

This novel is quite different from many of the others; the story is very dark and continues to be that way, and that's what makes the story stand out from a lot of the others.

The story is also unpredictable at times because of this dark element, which makes the series take turns you wouldn't expect (a welcome change). What I especially like about this story is that there aren't many "s*upid" things that happen with the story being so vicious and dark. The story is also slow paced at times,... more>> but that's Er Gen's style, slowly building up to a climax of an arc.

I do sometimes wish that Er Gen didn't make it so tragic, but that's the appeal of the novel, and it makes sense why everything happened.

All in all, it's definitely a novel worth reading. <<less

It could have been better if not for the fact that the author introduces several characters that are irrelevant to the progression of the story or are not heard from again. Also, with a couple of time skips one after another, the love and enmity the MC has for other characters loses its luster. The story so far seems to be focused on seclusion for training.

Review as of Ch.130.

It’s by Er Gen, author of “I Shall Seal The Heavens”. Imagine a younger Meng Hao with the same brashness, insights and persistence, and you’ll get Wang Lin of “Xian Ni”. The initial arc tries to remind us that Wang Lin has emotional ties to his parents, and yet time passes as if it means nothing. Months and years are written off as the MC secluded himself and cultivate multiple times, making you wonder what’s the point of all the characters introduced so early if they aren’t... more>> used regularly. At one point his entire sect was defeated and forced to disperse, and Er Gen straight up wrote that the MC is all but forgotten by those who came across him. Even his initial nemesis, the typical arrogant cousin; simply disappeared into seclusion at the time of this review.

What you are going to encounter after the dramatic defeat of the MC’s sect is chapters and chapters of struggling to power-up while in life-and-death circumstances. Lots of description of seclusion and powering up. Lots and lots of it. Power up yes, but to what end? I appreciate the efforts of the translators, but there is no driving force, no motivation to the MC’s behavior except to survive. It’s like reading on and on about some kid painstakingly solving his math homework. The only mystery is in his cheat item which houses a powerful immortal (as usual), but after 90+ chapters I am not aware of any long term goal set by the MC. Initially he wanted to take revenge on the said arrogant cousin, but after the authors made the time skips, the goal seemed insignificant compared to the power scale being talked about.

I thought it would be a carefree MC, annoying infuriating others with his lackadaisical attitude, perhaps causing a woman or two to fall in love with him in the process. But no, we’re getting a serious, no-nonsense MC without a hint of humor or charisma.

If you liked the slow-paced build up of Er Gen’s other works, you will find more of it here. <<less

Seems like the typical xianxia, but with WAY more terms and names to remember.

The beginning was quite decent, but u will notice that this novel focuses on explanations way too much and it gets really tiring. The emotional perspective is close to zero and even if there is any, it will get easily disrupted by another long description of something. It had potential, but the few emotions within the thousands of explanations just destroy the mood and it feels like u dont read in the perspective of the MC, but... more>> the third person perspective of the novel speaker.

No romance at all, so I dont know why people randomly tag that into this novel (which was one of the reasons I chose to start this).

If u like the wikipedia of xianxia, this might be interesting to u. <<less

Its okay if you wanna read this, but after ch.7x, it gets pretty boring.

Also, dont read the manwha, does not do the novel any justice.

Personally I found it interesting with a calculating try hard no talent MC.

But like usual chinese xianxia novels, they come across a godly item that aids them to the point of godhood.

Kinda moots all the hardwork the MC puts in gaining power.

Feels like 2 different stories with same protagonist. After somewhere around 120 chapters there is a story reset and if you actually start reading from there you won't get confused too much. It feels like first 120 chapters were one big prologue.

It is very difficult to read because new techniques, names and places pop up right and left, without ever being used again.
