*This review was written by a user Lkheir on web novel, but it perfectly suited my thoughts. So why do I have to write again? Lol Nevertheless, here we go.

Reverend Insanity is an absolute masterpiece, an example of just about everything good in xianxia, taken to its peak. If you have even a vague interest in the genre, RI is a must-read by all means - even if you do dislike some aspects of it.

What makes RI so outstanding is primarily the plot, structured into distinct 'volumes'. (Though the ones... more>> marked as "1" and "2" here on Webnovel are actually the same volume) The novel starts off somewhat slow, but over the course of each volume slowly builds up to an absolutely massive climax in the last 30-40 chapters of a volume, the likes of which I have not found in ANY other web novel out there - and very few print book series for that matter!

That may sound like an exaggeration, but the first couple of turning points are amazing beyond words - unbelievably intense and unpredictable - yet so incredibly well set up and foreshadowed, with surprisingly few plot holes considering the sheer scale.

And that, in a regular-release piece of ambitious action fantasy is a very impressive achievement.

At its core, RI is a classic xianxia novel, with a 'relatively' traditional cultivation system, clad in the cover of 'gu' - magic insects that form the basis of not just the power system, but society on the whole, from street lights to letters, to houses. While certainly a unique take on cultivation, with some other interesting twists I won't spoil, it's still very much a xianxia, the internal cultivation remains much the same, and many traditional elements, such as dao paths, pill refining, heavenly tribulations, inheritances, blessed lands, and so forth do appear, though often with different names.

Our main character, Fang Yuan, is not only a reincarnator, but originally a transmigrator as well. Don't put too much focus on the latter, but the fact is, this is his third rodeo, and he certainly acts like it. He is mature, driven, and logical. Unlike many reincarnation novels, our hundreds-of-years-old MC does not act like a naive teenager with plot-convenient 'past knowledge' that is only used as deus ex machina, no, Fang Yuan is very much an experienced adult, callous, scarred, hardened, and cynical after his past life.

And while I certainly consider this a good thing, it's also one of the key points that will turn some people off RI.

Because Fang Yuan is not a hero. He is not an anti-hero. He is not neutral. He is EVIL, to the core who has reached the peak stage of budhism. Not your prideful, arrogant villain, your crazed maniacal slaughterer-for-fun, or your edgy brooding git, thank god. But he is cold, cruel, calculating, and utterly amoral. He is a manipulative double-crosser who knows when to act nice for his own benefit. There is no wholesomeness to be found, and very little comedy, this story is DARK and cruel, with virtually no exception.

And don't expect this to change much. While Fang Yuan is a fairly interesting character, he's already a grown man with hundreds of years of experience - there is not much character growth to be found.

Most side characters are fleshed out enough to seem like realistic, grounded people, with their own ideals, beliefs, and motivations, even quite minor characters. There are some characters which receive significantly more characterisation, and remain relevant throughout the story, and very few are entirely forgotten. But ultimately, this is not a story with more than one main protagonist.

The author does not do what oh so many other authors do, in trying to write an intelligent MC by making all other characters utter morons. No, not only is our main character well and truly intelligent, so is just about everyone else. There are extremely few incompetent characters, even throw-away villains, minor characters, and lunatics are generally intelligent and rational, with very little of the clichéd blind arrogance or utter s*upidity so common in xianxia works.

Of course, while characters are generally intelligent, they are still limited by perspective, circumstance, pride, and rules/standards, and certainly, make many errors and poor decisions from an omniscient point of view. What sets our MC apart is not that he is all that more intelligent, but that he is experienced, amoral, and shameless - without the slightest care for pride, rules, or reputation.

And another thing that sets RI apart from many other novels, be they xianxia or not, is that there is absolutely no romance. Zero. Zilch. We have one, perhaps two minor characters with an adoration towards Fang Yuan, but, as one would expect of intelligent characters when faced with a cold, loveless killer, they don't ever bring it up, and merely keep at a distance.

One of the central recurring themes in RI is the idea of individuals versus organised groups. While with a fair bit of bias, seeing as our MC very much stands for the former, this is portrayed in a rather grey sense, with deceit, abuse and corruption, contra caring, love, and fairness being portrayed on both sides. For the most part, the author seems to write from a fairly open-minded perspective, which can very much be a breath of fresh air.

And another praiseworthy aspect is that our MC, while certainly evil, and a complete psychopath, is by no means a hypocrite. He knows full well that he is evil, and makes no attempt to seek a moral high ground - if it gets him to his goal, he has no qualms with being in the 'wrong', and does not attempt to justify his actions. There are no rose-tinted glasses here.

The world itself has a very strong foundation, with clear and distinct world-building, history, rules, and organizational structures - everything 'makes sense', and this is something that really sets RI up for greatness. There is in-universe mythology that permeates through the story, often founding the basis for not just cultivation, but beliefs, ideals, and ways of thought as well. I do, however believe that it is important to see it as such, as much like real-world mythology, it is simplified, over-exaggerated, and metaphorical - which makes perfect sense for abstract stories passed down over countless years.

While I praise it to high heavens, and it is one of the extremely few novels I will ever give a perfect score, there is still no such thing as a perfect novel.

It can absolutely be polarizing to a lot of people, Fang Yuan is definitely not everyone's type of MC, the serious tone doesn't ever really go away, and it is still ultimately a xianxia - which some people will like and others not.

And while basically unavoidable, the lulls between climaxes can feel unbelievably slow. They are undeniably important, as they are dense to the point of bursting with foreshadowing and set-up, but by god can it be slow. The fourth (fifth on Webnovel) volume in particular really drags on, and while the pay-offs may be worth it, getting there can be a slog, especially once caught up and reading chapters as they are translated.

Besides the novel itself, the translation is excellent, with the occasional slip-up here and there, but a reasonable pace and consistently good quality. There is very little to complain about here.

Ultimately, I believe that beyond the plot, what makes RI so bloody good is an incredible consistency. Characters are consistent in their actions and beliefs, the power system is well-founded, with the vast majority of power-ups making perfect sense - in fact, just about everything in the story just makes sense.

Very little feels shoehorned in, little is left out, ignored, or unexplained, and there is an incredible amount of foreshadowing and build-up.

And this is why I believe that while it may not be a perfect novel, RI achieves what it sets out to achieve. There is no such thing as a flawless or universally appealing novel, but for what it is, RI is downright fantastic. Even if you do dislike aspects of it, even if the genre does not interest you, at least the first 400 chapters or so are absolutely worth a read for the quality alone. Said quality does not decay beyond that, but the story does slow down quite significantly, and if you already weren't interested it may be hard to tough it out between the climaxes. <<less

This is a review to all the people probably scrolling past and wanting to know if they should read it or not after reading mixed reviews.

The answer is, a most definite YES! I'll explain why but before..

Disclaimer: This novel isn't for edgelords (since they saw Ruthless MC in tags, muhh), wannabe elitists (who think they are know it all) and s*upid inept imbeciles (because they lack the necessary brains to comprehend this beauty, sorry to be straightforward). If you think you're any of the above, don't bother. You'd... more>> just review it with 1 star and wimp away.

Now then, first and foremost. MC has emotions, rather lots of them. Don't let those half wit reviews tell you otherwise. He has so many damn emotions that he actually has transcended them. MC, infact is what makes the novel. Ofcourse all novels revolve around their MCs, but this novel in particular is what it is because MC's interactions, his perception to life, his philosophies are so realistic and intricate, you'd wonder if he is a Buddha and you're reading a gospel guide to become an achiever, believer.

That also means there's no character development. This novel has no character development at all. You might say he's the same apathetic and mu*derous selfish fool but he's that way because no matter how many lifetimes he lives, his intrinsic nature, his ideals, his way of life brings it back to square one. The only thing he seeks thrill and worth to be alive for is to seek Eternal Immortality. Else, he'd consider himself no better than a pile of ash. This unfettered, unbridled personality filters him out from the casuals.

There are so many equally smart or cunning characters in this Dog-eat-Dog world that even at an apex one can't say quiet confidently that they're the best.

The cultivation is the most unique there is. Nothing comes close in all the 50 or so cultivation novels I've read. There are 'Gu' insects. They are the fragments of the Great Dao in this world. A cultivator without Gu or its essence are just shells, no matter if you're the most supreme entities in this world; the Venerables.

Imagine a Gu as an alphabet in the dictionary. A single alphabet can have thousands of fonts. Two alphabets together can make a 2 letter word. Three, a bigger word. These alphabets can also be used with other alphabets of another language. And there are hundreds of such languages. Now add numbers like you would in your quadratic equations. Yes, yes. I know it is complex but this is the only most suitable analogy I could come up with. It is heavy, unfathomable but it is worth it. No way is it repetitive or an info dump. The Gu World is always researching and discovering new means of cultivation with the 'Gu'. Favourite catchphrase, "There are no powerful Gu, only powerful Gu Masters."

Also, there are no s*upid pills, swords, lucky encounters, martial arts booklets, AI, modifiers, lucky charms, spells, magic, mana, divinity, silver spoon kind of bullsh*t here. Everything Fang Yuan achieves is with metel, schemes, bribery, finance, sugar-talks, plots and blood. He also loses on many occasions. That's how tough this world is.

World building and political situation in the 5 continents and 2 'heavens' is almost infinite. To give a scale, a single continent is like a size of 10 Earths iirc. And one heaven is many times bigger than all the continents combined. And there are 2 of such 'heavens'. This gives us many topographies, resources, humans, variant humans, Immemorial Beasts of all kinds and species.

There are equally many illustritious characters. Everyone of these can become a MC in their own right. They're all very well written.

Miscellaneous, there's also another stroy going on parallel in the novel called the 'Legends of Ren Zu'. Consider it as a Bible of the Gu World. It provides the cultivators to come with wisdom, insights and inspirations. Very 'inception' kinda way of going about it but it is absolutely a gem. Some readers might consider them fillers but they are like a breath of fresh air, giving another layer of richness and flavour to the novel.

This novel is so rouge and unrelenting, Chinese Govt. Had to ban it. Its one major arc emphasised on seeking freedom and breaking away from the shackles of a system. Props to the author. This author has left behind the others by a mile. Imho, this novel could be considered a great fantasy on the global stage. Not just as a xianxia but as an awesome read.

So just read it on Webnovel or download them epubs already! Have fun. <<less

BEST NOVEL EVER! 5/5

World building and wording 5/5,
Scheming and depth in the plot 5/5,
Cliff ends and suprises 6/5,
All Characters and Dimensions 5/5,
Plot Holes: none 5/5
Evil and ruthless MC 6/5,
Ruthless, Naked, and impartial world 6/5,
Plot 5/5,
Consistencies 5/5,
Reasonings 5/5,
Harmony of dark story with light elements 5/5

Fang Yuan is an evil person who has no ethics, bottom lines, any kind of rules... and his only goal is to reach true eternal life, true immortality. However, everyone tries to hinder him on this path, resources aren't given freely, but can only be taken by wits and force! Fang yuan is against the whole world.

Think of a story which doesn't get boring a bit even after 2000 chapters, and not only that, it becomes even more attractive.

However, I also have some critics, that why I didn't give the plot 6 out of 5, but only 5 out of 5.

I think the north arch is unnecessarily too long.
Furthermore there are occasionally few chapters about completely different characters interacting one another parts of the novel which I couldn't care less about (as they're some unknown people).
Out of 2000 chapters only these things problemed me, just a bit.
However, the overall novel has the most perfect and intruging plot I have ever seen in my entire life equals to the plot of Hunter x Hunter with its fantastic 2011 anime.

Warning: the MC of this novel is a monster. Not just the childish kind of monster you usually find in wanxia, who punches anything that annoys him, a real monster who values nothing, stops at nothing, all to return to the height of the cultivation world. For example, he tortures children to death, kills innocents like it's nothing, is responsible for the death of literally dozens of thousands of people who didn't do anything to him, just so he can get a little bit of an edge.

That being said, if... more>> you can look past that, that novel is excellent. Original cultivation system, intense fights, a lot of smart and interesting characters, deep story, etc... It's clearly one of a kind among the cultivation novels which are all more or less build on the same model. You just have to be able to follow a MC who makes most serial killers look like quite nice fellows after all. <<less

MC is very very evil. Be warned before trying to read this.

c286 review:

This story has a unique cultivation method and interesting world building. The MC is actually clever. His reasoning is explained either immediately or some time later. At time he would do things that seemed s*upid to me at first, but when the reasoning is explained it actually makes sense as part of his long term goals.

Spoiler

For example, he intentionally rubs the clan's face in the fact that he is rejecting their system and is disloyal so that he will get spied on... so that he will have an alibi for some other issue. When you realize that he was doing it all for the alibi it goes from s*upid to a viable long term plan.

And later when the issue is resolved he starts to show how he is reforming and integrating into the clan's system. note that he is 15 at the time and as such he correctly believes it will be seen as teenage rebellion, and he doesn't go "too far" with his rebellion

[collapse]

It is refreshing that unlike so many chaotic-s*upid-evil lolrandumb idiots, MC actually has planning and reasoning for his actions. And those are not shrouded in mystery to cover up for the fact the author can't come up with anything, but actually explained in a logical manner. Usually the MC's thoughts are actually used to justify his actions.

For example, when exploring a possibly trap filled treasure site he sends forth a rabbit tied to a string. then pulls it back and sees it is unharmed. Then he kills the rabbit. Seems random? but we immediately receive the explanation on why he did it. That animals have memories, and the rabbit might return to this place, leading a human tracker to finding it.

While MC will happily mu*der for the smallest benefit, he realizes the consequences of such actions and that sometimes, mercy serves him better. (still, expect lots of brutal mu*der of innocents)

About the only flaw I can come up with is that in the first ~200 chapters the MC seems to be too good at predicting people's reactions. Yes, he has 500 years of life experience as a devil dao cultivator. But its still a bit over the top how good he is at it, if he gets in trouble it is because he is being blindsided by something he didn't even know about rather than making a prediction error. Which happens surprisingly often since the MC doesn't rely on plot armor. A lot of times his plans fail, simply because things happen in the world. The author makes sure to show us how and why the plans fail due to the world doing its own thing and not revolving around the MC, which is a really nice touch.

Oh, incidentally. MC was a human from earth, reincarnated (born as a baby! NOT body snatching a corpse) into xianxia world WITHOUT a cheat, lived there for 500 years before being forced into a corner and using a rare magic to rewind time to his youth while keeping his memories. Usually in such a case there is a constant reference to earth stuff, but here it actually most often refers to his 500 years of life in this world with only rare references to earth. Don't worry about this becoming a case of constant time travel abuse, his ability to use it are very strictly limited. Even in scenarios where you are sure he is going to use it, he ends up not using it (since the danger of using it is high)

The world is also full of enemies which have cheat like abilities of their own which the MC has to face.

Spoiler

There are various "typical protagonist" like characters with cheats or heavenly luck. There is literally luck path magic inheritances that let you raise your luck over 9000. There is dream path that let people gain hundreds of years worth of experience quickly. There are wisdom path which can deduce things from the slightest hints and sometimes even pay a high price to get info from nothing. There is a faction with a (heavily injured but they are healing it) fate gu that used to let them control the fate of all people (currently very limited due to its injuries), there are reincarnation techniques that let people cheat death, there are time path masters running around, etc.

And no, MC doesn't just easily collect all those cheats for himself. Oh, he sure tries, but generally speaking he fails or gets inferior scraps. Hundreds of chapters of hard work and effort will give him some inferior lower grade incomplete inheritance of one of the above

[collapse]

The fact that MC doesn't have a cheat is also a refreshing change. The time travel thing is something he earned over 600 years that admittedly happen off screen, and is really not as big an advantage as you would think.

Spoiler

It is constantly worsening his luck, has very small windows of opportunity during which it can be used and for most of the story it is inaccessible, he quickly butterflies away a lot of future knowledge, he has to grow in power above a certain rate or he will explode requiring him to take unnecessary risks, and unless he can ascend to immortal he only has enough energy to go back a very short amount of time and thus not enough time to completely avoid the danger, wisdom path enemies can prevent him from using it, and when MC says there is a chance of death whenever it is used he is taking it seriously. There are times when I was sure he was going to go back in time and yet he did not do so because he is taking the risk seriously

[collapse]

c408 edit:

This somehow managed to get even better. The author really hit his stride, MC started making mistakes in people analysis rather than just being blindsided by lack of info. And the ending of book 2 was just pure awesomeness. Moreover, those "tales of ren zu (first human) " are revealed to be an in universe novel written by an ancient immortal and are actually plot relevant info. Moreover, a lot of what seems like ridiculous metaphor turns out to be literal. I had dismissed it as irrelevant padding and as such did not notice a plot twist which wouldn't have happened had I paid more attention to them. The novel has really matured into one of my all times favorites.

Also worth noting that MC is graduating from picking on mortals with his 600 years of experience and is starting to tassel with immortals who are much more powerful then him, older, more knowledgeable, and each and every one of them is cunning. There is no such thing as a s*upid or naive immortal, although most are not quite as cunning as the MC they are all a challenge. And some are even more cunning then the MC (wisdom path in particular) <<less

I'd recommend this novel to anyone who's above at least of the age 16+. It's not your typical "hero" or "villain" from any other stories I've read but giving a reason for MCs actions. Most martial art LNs are extremely repetitive and boring, same old personalities -> Kind to his relatives, ruthless to his enemies and plot armor every 10 chapters.

MC does anything to gain advantage of situations and benefits for selfish purposes. You'll see he will take righteous or villain routes where needed, simply wonderful when reading and how... more>> Fang Yuan (MC) delivers the work for his plans. I love scheming LNs such as (Legend of Ling Tian, Otherworldly Evil Monarch, Regressor Instruction Manual). RIs scheming actions are satisfying to read and really can tell the difference from night and day compared to others.

Fang Yuan is both a transmigrator (2nd life) and a reincarnator (3rd life).
Why did he transmigrate? And why did he get a second chance at it?
All the questions will be answered after 1000-chapters and trust me, you'll not be disappointed.

Author is very good at writing and even surprises me at the solutions he gives us for the MC, it's not predictable at all and also the solutions are not something that pops up randomly but from combination of the world building and law of how the world works.

Sometimes he gets huge failures which impacts the whole situation he is in (life threatening ones), but still can figure out schemes and solutions for his problems.

The side-characters (Rank 6 Immortals+) are very detailed and well made in a sense where every single one of them could be a MC on other LNs. <<less

The writing is very good but incredibly redundant and the main character does things in such a way that they dont make sense with any justification. If he can do something the harmless, easy, and intelligent way he will always opt for the harmful and s*upid way usually with flimsy justification that doesn't stand to any scrutiny.

Dropped.

I don't understand why so many people recommended this novel, the MC is a loner and barely communicates with anyone else. When he finally does, they're always plotting against him or something similar. What a sad, boring story. The pace is slow, lots of useless details are extensively described, and the MC doesn't have anything or anyone important to him besides himself. He is like a robot, spending every single second of his life in cultivation, looking for gu, and killing people who keep plotting against him for some reason.... more>> Even if that makes him able to live for hundreds of years, is that really a life worth living?

I can only hope the MC will be able to find some friends later on, but I won't be staying to find out.

All the luck for everyone who's enjoying the book! <<less

What can I say, as always this novel has not ceased to amaze me. Each time I try to read another Chinese novel I just get disgusted. This is what a cultivation world should be like, not only about strength but smarts and cunning. At this point in the novel, most of the dumb, righteous idiots are either dead or just unimportant fools, a perfect example is Ma Hong Yun

This novel shows that although luck plays a very important part in a person's cultivation journey, just depending on that will... more>> leave you ending up in a state far worse than death so all those other novels where MC just keeps having fortuitous encounters and killing enemies stronger than themselves due to plot armor would die extremely miserably if placed in the World of Gu.

Another beautiful thing about this novel is, the enemies are so f*cking smart and are as cunning as the MC. Both the righteous faction and the evil faction all strive towards the same thing, which is benefits. The only difference is the righteous faction would rather use offhanded means secretly while appearing pious while the evil factions have no qualms with appearances.

The world building is beautiful, the cultivation is unique and it is just an absolutely fun read. If you're looking for a novel where the MC is a righteous, harem seeking, plot armored bastard then I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a mature novel with amazing world building, smart characters in general and unique cultivation setting, then this novel is for you. <<less

This is top tier. We have a ruthless protagonist who is as ruthless with himself as he is with everyone else. Unlike other MCs who get a 'second chance' at life, he is smart as hell and actually acts like someone who's lived a long-ass life and puts those experiences to good use. The side characters are extremely well written as well. Many of them who've been alive for hundreds of years actually act like they've had that many years of experience instead of having the IQ of 14-year-olds, like... more>> most Xianxia have. <<less

An excellent novel with some flaws that you must accept if you read this. This novel is perhaps the only novel that takes the "i want to live forever" trope seriously. Many novels they make the MC claim to have a goal that is to become an immortal however they dive right into absolute danger without batting an eye. Does that make sense? For example if I intended to save 1 million dollars and that was my lifelong goal. Will I do business deals with 5% success rates? That is... more>> majority of other xianxia and xuanhuan mc's. This MC will not lose a single dollar without making sure he will make returns on it. He does so much planning that just one step he takes it was as if he planned it. And the best thing about this novel is the fact that it isnt wish fulfillment. Not everything goes his way, he wins some and loses some. Treasures do fall on his lap randomly, but they arent like other novels where they increase strength and stuff like that. They are pretty much money which needs to be expended to fight. Also Women dont jump on his c*otch the moment he does something and everyone understands only one language. The language of benefits. People scheme against him and he schemes against literally everyone. He doesnt go randomly slaughtering people for no reason, he has his reasons to pursue immortality. He is still evil tho

I have a few misgivings with this story tho:

    1. Spoiler

the reverse back to checkpoint happened so far I believe twice or three times. It is a big fat gigantic block of plot armor, however it is done absolutely amazing. The MC cannot lose because once he does, he self destructs and turns back to a checkpoint. Now that sounds horrible, but its the whole ability of his gu which has been explained plenty of times. Only reason its called plot armor, is because he has the memories and stuff of the previous checkpoint. He has lost a few times and was outsmarted tremendously, however he reverted back the checkpoint and escaped his previous defeat. However later on its use gets limited I believe.

      [collapse]
    1. Romance, it is virtually zero. This MC is evil and there is no doubt about that. He has burned children to death, skinned little girls and fed them to beasts sacrificed people who loved him and so on. However dont get turned off because of that. After all if you have read any novel with a ruthless MC in this genre then it is acceptable behaviour. Because they destroy entire clans, and those clans definitely have children and stuff. But this novel goes above and beyond. No relationships, everyone is being fooled into thinking he is friends with them. If they had no use for him he would kill them for knowing too much. I love all his companions but I know they always end up in the worst position
    2. Reactions. Oh boy in other novels the peanut gallery watches everything and commentates on the entire situation. In this novel there is no peanut gallery which is excellent during crunch times, however when the dust settles there are no reactions from the enemies. For example lets say MC raids some land and schemes. We get point of views from all enemies that play a role and anyone that plays a significant role will be shown and their intentions will be clear. However after Fang Yuan escapes whether he wins or not, the enemies post reactions isnt shown. Its merely summarised in one line or something. Another example:
      Spoiler

Fang Yuan robbed an entire continents greatest treasure. He was being hunted by the major powers of two continents. They didnt know who robbed them but they were searching for him. This went on for hundreds of chapters. Once they found out it was him, we didnt even get a single reaction from anyone. Everyone just accepted a little kid rocked up and destroyed plans made for hundreds of years.

      [collapse]
    1. Powers and weird worms. The whole novel is based on some weird-ass power structure, but you will get used to it later on. Why I say its weird? Because these people insert worms into their bodies and use the power of the worms. Now thats okay if it was one or two, but some people have thousands and thousands, I just cant imagine thousands of parasites inside a human body giving it supernatural feats. If this novel had a cultivation system like other novels, it would be a notch higher. But I do understand the story requires it to have such a system so it is acceptable, just weird tbh.
    2. Another flaw I would say. Some enemies plot against him, f*ck him up and then he forgets about it. Like he becomes an immortal and he still has some mortal enemies that he didnt take care of. This is a misgiving I have but it related perfectly to the story, because he sees no benefit in bullying some little mortals. Literally he is the type to kill children for the lollipops in the childs hand, however this perfectly relates to his character. I kid you not if he wasnt a villain or evil then this novel would definitely be undisputed best xuanhuan. Unfortunately, he is a villain which many people dislike, however once you get used to him he is a genius.
Now the good stuff.
    1. Schemes. Boy oh boy can this guy scheme. He plans for days on end just for simple schemes tho which does make him seem s*upid. But he did end up in a disadvantaged state so I understand. Anyways, his schemes are brilliant and majority of them work. They dont rely on s*upid moves from his enemies, but overwhelming scheming ability from the MC. I commend him for his ability to f*ck everyone over and profit huge while plotting another robbery at the same time. Although it can be said he would be tr*sh without the knowledge of the future it goes to show the author had to make the MC be able to know what was going down when and where, otherwise the novel would be bland and boring. For example, many novels require the MC to conquer the starting city first and then move on to bigger and better places. This novel doesnt do that, once he gets enough power to be able to move around he is practically everywhere in the planet. He has extended his evil hands to all sorts of places and will steal candy from a baby if he needed it. Not condoning it, but atleast he is consistent. I have heard the "although I am ruthless and evil, I will never hurt innocents." then how is that evil and ruthless. (Other xianxia novels not this one) heck this novel he will kill you if it will give him an extra second of life.
    2. His cheat: the reborn power isnt exclusive to him.
      Spoiler

At one point his enemies take it from him and they use it to turn back time lol. How cool is that? The biggest cheat of the MC is taken and used when the MC won and then he suffered huge losses because someone made him taste his own medicine haha. So the reborn cheat isnt actually a secret, many find out he has it and plan against it. Yes it can be countered.

      [collapse]
    3. MC actaully loses. Despite being the smartest MC I have seen and the plot armor being acceptable he still takes huge losses. Only annoying thing is restarting time which is o.p. But its not exclusive to him and can be countered. Other novels, MC will never be fazed even if the sky is falling because they subconsciously know that they got plot armor. This MC actually has emotions and will be scared and will instantly try to plot his way out. Other MC have straight face and everything is under control because their enemies have a childs mentality. This MC enemies are extremely smart and he struggles sometimes losing and winning. You never know if he is going to win or lose in his plots
    1. Side characters. Majority of them are excellent. They are all fooled to think that they are friends with Fang Yuan, but he has no friends, only benefits. Legit its so funny how he doesnt trust even his shadow. Oh my allies know about my home? Guess I gotta prepare another home just in case." he is literally that cautious and meticulous. Even his current allies wont be trusted to know all his secrets.
    1. The plot, although we dont know much about the grand plot or how the story will advance after rank 9 or 10. The current enemies are enough to overwhelm him so he must be prepared immensely. His only redeeming quality is his knowledge of the future which he absolutely abuses.
overall, a decent read for those who are veterans in this genre. It eclipses many novels in every notion. An MC that doesnt discriminate between his enemies, whether man woman child or beast or insect too lol. He will kill all those who get in his way and if you cant be killed he will plot your death and conveniently rob you too. MC isnt a hypocrite or anti hero. HE IS EVIL. None of that "ohh evil isnt black or white" bullshit. This guy is a last chapter villain worthy character. I wonder how his end will be. <<less

I don't consider the protagonist evil, just rational.

Imagine a world filled with villains but the protagonist is simply a villain who isn't a hypocrite.

Also, lots of business management and trading and many of same promised in the future.

I agree that some actions were hard to swallow and some deaths seemed unnecessary but you have others who are more cruel than the protagonist.

I disagree on the plot armor being thick.

It is not. Protagonist actually loses a lot.

He is simply good at learning to cut his losses

The cultivation in this novel is disappointing in the begining, but has it gets farther, it becomes really good. The MC is evil and as you read you will understand why.

Now for those that says that MC kill without reasons, I would suggest you go see a doctor because you may have a little issue with your brain.

MC kills alot out of necessities and if not this it is to advance with is cultivation, I will not spoil further.

A Great novel if you don't like BS.

I gave this novel a second chance and didn't regret it, it stands above most stories on this website with a truly unique MC and cultivation system. It is truly a shame that it was discontinued and never got a proper ending.

As usual with Chinese novel, it's ridiculously long.

If buddha is the symbol of kindness to all being, the MC is the symbol of stepping on all being equaly. Fang yuan is the type to cheat, kill, backstab everyone and everything to reach his goal. He's very efficient to the point of crazy. He lived for 500+ years before regressing and it shows not only from his knowledge, but emotionally as well. Notice how I didn't mention anyone or anything beside him because every character beside MC is simply replaceable to... more>> him. There's a lot of characters and Gu that are memorable and important to the plot, but there's no attachment from the MC to any of them/it. How he treated a character is based on pure loss/profit calculation.

The fact that he got no one he cherish is a two sided coin. On one side it sure is refreshing to find a MC so calculating and logical. On the other side, it made the reader have little attachment to the story. There's no sense of crisis since the MC is a c*ckroach that can't be killed. There's no side character that make reader cry if they get killed either.

All in all. Fang Yuan will make a really great business man/politician on earth. Too bad he's in cultivation world. <<less

to all people saying "Legend of Ren Zu" isnt interesting, how tf you're reading this novel as everytime the legend is mentioned, the deeper its connection to the main plot..

also ignore "Thefirstread" comment, the audacity to review when he just read 57 chapters lmao.. FY character as most of people here says, he is ruthless to himself and to everyone else just to achieve his goal, basically a hardcore selfish.. I dont wanna spoil stuff but FY understand the Gu world the most, he didn't discard his emotions like love... more>> and etc., he is just suppressing it to achieve something, which is eternal life. <<less

Fang Yuan, the MC of this novel is, Absolutely fascinating! He is a Villain with a Dignity. A Villain with the awareness of a Villain. A Villain worthy of admiration.

There's no eternal enemy or friends, only eternal benefits. There's no absolute good or evil, only absolute benefits.

That's extremely true!

Heroes are, after all, people who kill under the banner of "justice". While Justice itself was something people with power create for their own convenience. On the other hand, villains are people who kill without any hypocrisy or obscuring their deeds as... more>> justice.

After reading this novel, I can only think that other Protagonists are either unnecessarily kind or unnecessarily evil. After I meet with Fang Yuan here, I can only sigh and think that other reborn protagonists are extremely dumb for not acting according to their age.

Yes, this novel gives me a satisfaction I can't get from a lot of other novels! <<less

This is once in a lifetime novel. Other reviews explain other stuff so i'll focus on economy.

Imagine your strong punch cost money, your super strong punch cost more money (or resources) and so forth.... that would make it so in order to be REALLY strong, having a strong economy would be NECESSARY.

So many novels dont treat this topic with enough respect and so ultrapowerful people completely break inmersion.... but think about it, if everything had a cost.... that means ultra strong fights would cost a ton of money.

This is one... more>> of the many things that sets this novel apart. Its not just more qi more power etc, its more of " I need to have the funding to do strong battles" and this makes everything different. Fighting isnt just about strenght but also about is it worth it?

Preparing for a fight means making sure your economy can handle it. I havent seen any novel that takes this topic so seriously. <<less
