Hatou Manabu has a very odd friend at school named Marii Yukari. Yukari has purple eyes and a bizarre way of looking at the world: she sees all living things as robots. This has not always worked out well for Yukari, even costing her a best friend when she was younger. However, Yukari insists that the things she says she sees is true, and her vision seems to give her insight into the abilities of others.

Manabu thinks she’s just weird, but she soon realizes that Yukari has unexpected talents. Her eyes allow her to view the world in a different way, and even the police come to hear her insights. Eventually, her eyes also get Manabu wrapped up in dangerous plots, and force Manabu to not only step up and take a much more proactive role in her own life, but also to question what being a human or a robot actually means.

You can't put it in words. This novel it was really... mind-blowing, and you wouldn't understand even if you read. Only by actually thinking can you "fully" understand.

This is one of my favorite LNs, and the manga adaptation is also magnificently done, including having the same artist. (In fact, I might like the manga adaptation slightly more, though the LN does add some setting clarification for certain events.)

Thinking about it now, though this novel predates the transmigration/reincarnation trend, it's actually kind of a transmigration novel, though it uses hard science (yes, this is a hard SF story!) to back up its protagonist's world-hopping adventures.

Just note, while this story starts off fluffy, cute, and weird, it ends... more>> up in some dark places, though it does end up with a happy ending.

It's actually really hard to describe the story of Murasakiiro no Qualia, because it really goes some really surprising, sometimes funny, more often sad, places. It doesn't really restrict itself to any genre trappings, though at its core, it's a story about a girl trying to save her friend.

As for the yuri, yes, there definitely is at least shoujo-ai in this, though the extent of the skinship is a kiss. It's not bait, though, which is what's the most important to me. (The love is explicit, though this story isn't a romance.)

The only possible criticism I see is the ending, which I personally enjoyed, but your mileage may vary.

Spoiler

It's a "love conquers all" ending, which I really liked, but which might not be to the taste of those looking for a more SF-ish conclusion, considering all the events leading up to it. In my opinion, it's the only way this story could've ended happily, and as an adult who's been inundated with tragic stories, especially tragic queer stories, I really enjoy the breath of fresh air that this ending was. But, again, YMMV, obviously.

TLDR; fantastic LN, especially for those looking for hard SF stories. Happy ending may not be for everyone, but I personally enjoyed it. <<less
