Kōdo Ikusei Senior High School, a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. The students there have the freedom to wear any hairstyle and bring any personal effects they desire. Kōdo Ikusei is a paradise-like school, but the truth is that only the most superior of students receive favorable treatment.

The protagonist Kiyotaka Ayanokōji is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its “inferior” students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination, and was put in D-class. After meeting Suzune Horikita and Kikyō Kushida, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka’s situation begins to change.

Note:- Even though Volume 0 is the prequel of this series, it is advised to read till Year 2 Volume 8 beforehand to avoid getting spoiled (which is precisely the reason why it was released after Y2 V8).

Anime:-

A masterpiece LN.
It's clever, well written, keeps my interest, has subtle romance/harem.

I hope more LN can use that as inspiration to write good MC and side characters.

This novel is simply amazing. The MC is like one of the best characters I've ever seen. This novel is like a mix of Sherlock holmes and a regular high school drama. This is NOT your average light novel. Definitely a must read

The intro to this novel sounded interesting, but it turned out rather boring. It focuses heavily on day to day dialogue which slows down the pace and makes things seem trivial.

For example, the first 60% of volume 1 is just mundane school life. The characters are quirky but cliche (eg, tsundere student, low presence student, sociable student, etc). The dialogue is so weird that it seems forced and cringy. Finally, near the end of the volume, the twist to the school is revealed and the midterm arc was entertaining. I... more>> just wished they didn’t waste time when the mundane stuff at the beginning.

Unfortunately, the pattern repeats for the next few arcs. The problem is introduced earlier, but a lot of the arc focuses on meaningless things. Phone calls to meet up take most of a chapter. When they search for people, we follow the characters to a bunch of pointless locations as they keep repeating the same discussion about some character for the tenth time. Then the resolution comes in the last 10% of the arc and is, honestly, entertaining but a letdown compared to the long buildup. <<less

Welcome to the schools of waifus :v

No more weak girls need MC to protect. Every female character building very well, and don't have anymore weak girls need protected, although they still have few weak moment.

4 Class is like a metaphor about 4 Struct society.

... more>> 1-D like a Democracy society, while have many faction with different benefit but still have same target, every people have same target is being the A-class, but they still have different motivation and benefit.

1-B like a Communism society, while everybody is contribute to doing something great, and because of the contributing, everyone have permission to speech to help class doing final class target" Being A-class"

What an underwhelming story. The author somehow wrote an entire first book without a single sympathetic character: the protagonist is passive and boring, and the first book doesn't even touch on his obligatory "mysterious past". The female lead is th**ny, which could've made for an interesting story with a dynamic like Araragi and Senjougahara in Bakemonogatari, but unfortunately this protagonist is too milquetoast for that. The other characters barely have a personality - there's the two-faced girl, the idiot trio (lecherous idiots without a single positive or sympathetic trait among... more>> the three of them), and on and on. And all girls are the constant subject of pointlessly sleazy and objectifying writing.

Finally, the protagonist demonstrates his supposed smartness via the remarkably lame move of...
Spoiler

being the only one to think of asking for past exam questions from a third-year student. Half the class should've thought of that.

[collapse]

Based on the first novel, I'm flabbergasted that this even received a sequel, let alone that it became an entire series. My recommendation: Read an actually great light novel instead like Bakemonogatari or The Empty Box and The Zeroth Maria. <<less

I just made this review to tell some people who made a bad review that the personality of the MC from vol 1-4 is a fake personality or better to say he is trying to act like a normal highschooler bcz he hasnt experienced anything of sort it was confirmed in the 2nd year vol 1 so I m not saying you should continue to read bcz honestly you all arent worthy of this masterpiece so the purpose of this comment is just to let you know how your reviews... more>> are based on a fake personality of the MC and how dumb they are for someone like me who has read the whole thing <<less

12/10 would read again. I started watching the anime and continued where it left off in the novel and I must say the story gets much more interesting as you read on. The MC is slowly starting to show his true potential in the novel. Lets just say that in the anime the MC was simply using like 5% of his true power then as you continue to read on he is starting to slowly unravel his huge intellect and power towards his classmates.

This isn't your typical one punch man... more>> type where MC is brute forcing his way to fix his problem. <<less

I was surprisingly hooked because of the clever and sneaky schemes Kiyotaka was doing. I'm a rather character-oriented person and he is very interesting to read from, a guy that was raised in a spartan environment but is super clever now wanting to learn about living in the real world. I quite liked how smart he is and how he wants to live a normal school life. Most importantly, I liked how all these little snippets of emotional realization/vulnerability he gets in the books the longer he stays at... more>> the school and forms meaningful relationships. This is because of the extreme clash between these tiny sentences of uncertainty from the guy who is incredibly ruthless and will do anything if it will keep him enrolled, even arranging for his own classmate to relieve her bullying trauma so that she can be useful to him. Furthermore, the relationships Kiyotaka has an impact on are surprisingly intense and have psychological depth, especially with Kei, Yosuke, Ryuen, Asayanagi and Horikita. He is perfectly fine with tearing people down so that they can be built back up stronger and be more useful to him in the future.

The few cons I have, most of the time, especially in the beginning half of the series, is that the setting up parts of the books can get rather draggy to read through where it's just lots of conversations that don't seem to do anything or even if they're important, it's still a drag to get through. I think 2 of the books were kinda boring in that Kiyotaka just didn't do anything, so it was like reading something meaningless. Now that Kiyotaka has chosen to not hide in Year 2, things are definitely getting very exciting and intense. However, most of the Year 1 freshmen seem like copies of the main Year 2 characters but tweaked a bit to not be exactly the same so that was a bit disappointing. For example, Yagami seems like Yosuke and Ichinose, Hosen like an extremely batsh*t version of Ryuen without the likeableness Ryuen brings to the table, Amasawa someone to bring the shock factor of Ryuen but with female options like asking if people would like to see her panties... It kinda feels like the author is running out of interesting characters so he gives them shock values instead.

I am sure everybody has said how good this novel is. I will point out some aspects which I feel are very good about this novel:

    • The so called "tests" or exams in this school are very good and thought out. They are complex enough to leave room for innovation and also logical enough that anybody can find out the trick to solve it with a little bit of effort. These exams really give the story a nice way for the readers to predict what's going to come. Regardless of whether you were right, the endings always makes it more fun it read.
    • The characters. Not just the MC but all other characters. There are so many characters in this novel and yet, the author is able to handle them very well. Each character, their motivations and the actions they take blend in to form the consequences. This is another strength of this novel that I haven't seen anywhere. I have read hundreds of novels by now and I can say for sure, I haven't such a big yet consistent cast of characters.
    • The allegories in this novel are striking and at the very least thought provoking. The readers would know this from the very first chapter when the MC talks about equality. The words may not be at the level of monogatari but the thoughts themselves do play out a lot. For instance,
      Spoiler

Although, Sakayanagi (the soon to be leader of Class A) calls herself a genius, the school's actual purpose is to build unity and bring out the synergy that a single genius can never bring. That's why the exams mostly deal in class points and not single points. That's why only the classes are promoted and not students. Obviously, there are exceptions like the 20 million points needed to change class or some special bonuses to get first prize. This mostly is to encourage competition within individual students.
On the other hand is the white room. Unlike the school, this tries to make geniuses from the alleged "talentless" through hard work. But at the same time, they promote individualism above everything else. That's why Ayanakoji believes that every one else is a "tool" or something.

This simple distinction explains a lot about rival parties in this novel.

Sakayanagi believes herself to be a genius and Kiyotaka as a "false" genius.

The school believes that geniuses can't be created but through unity they can be overcome. The White room wants to prove that geniuses can be created and those individuals would make Japan more prosperous than the school's students.

Nagumo aims to tear apart the schools ideology by introducing rules that remove the class cohesion. Horikita on other hands believes in the school ideology and thus, wants someone to protect the school lest Nagumo will destroy it when he is gone.

      [collapse]
    • The writing style is very distinct. It doesn't waste too much time on the environment but on the characters. The translation is extremely good.
    • The side chapters give the different perspective to the same situation that does spark my interest.
One things I will point out though is that some might think the MC's way of doing things through the shadows is too much pain. Why can't he just do it? Although, it is a light spoiler but basically the MC has his life planned out after the school or at least he thinks that is the case. So, regardless of how he performs at the school, he will do what has been planned. Since, he has been working a lot before, now he just wants to lay back and enjoy the show.

Despite having a massive number of cast, somehow Classroom of The Elite managed to make them memorable enough within a short amount of time. One of the reasons is probably the fact that most of them are one dimensional, such as Sudou Ken being a bog standard jock, for the characters who DO get extra details, they're not explained in deep detail.

Some novel like to explain in excruciating detail just how badly things are for the characters but as with everything, moderation is key and there's diminishing return. Like, I... more>> get it, girl A comes from a broken home, she was bullied hard, her pet cat died, I really don't need to know the details of her parents' quarrel or how sharp the thumbtacks in her shoes are or how mangled her pet cat's body was. Enough, she's pitiful, I get it already

Classroom of The Elite does not make that mistake. Whatever background a character has, is explained succinctly and quickly. This keeps the focus on the plot, and the plot is marvelous, with the central theme being 4D chess. Each mostly focuses on a single incident and the entire plot revolves around it, only for a big 4D chess reveal at the end. It's like watching a magician revealing his tricks

The one problem I have with this novel is the fact that it uses unreliable narrator of the highest degree: the protagonist himself. Sherlock Holmes may not be very reliable because he usually never gives the readers enough information, there's always a big reveal where he suddenly presents a new, vital piece of information that readers couldn't possibly know, which allows him to pull some twists. In this novel, the protagonist himself explains to readers his train of thought: he's thinking in a laid back way and explicitly tells the readers that the situations he found himself in are mere coincidences, even going so far as claiming he really would rather not do whatever it is that others asked him to do and whoever it is that others are suspecting is probably innocent, only to reveal at the end that everything is going according to his keikaku and he knew who the culprit is all along. The novel outright lied, and it really cheapens the whole big reveal

Still, the 4D chess is interesting to follow and the characters entertaining. By checking out the big reveal, subsequent reads are even more amusing as you can pick up various hints author provided <<less

For a school life anime, it feels more like a battle royale.

A mix of mystery, action and very little but nice romance.

For the MC, imagine a poker faced lelouch. A bit emotion less, but everything is in the palm of his hands. When everyone is playing on 3d chess he is playing on 5d chess. For me, he is uninteresting. What really makes the story is that most characters are mostly fleshed out. Note that there are lots of side characters with each of their own interaction with MC. This... more>> isn't rom com. And not every female ally is romantically tied with MC. <<less

Solid 5* for me. Everything gets better after every volume. The tests, the schemes, the reveals, the plots, the characters even the playing field changes every now and then to the story's betterment. From the classroom, to the school year, to all classes across all years - and even against the school higher ups. There's even a mysterious link between the teachers - still not clear what happened to them but they sure are burning in rivalry.

You will not only see the MC's development but the rest of the characters... more>> as well, not just in their class but the whole school. Every major player has their unique back story and man they aren't pleasant at all. Well most of those revealed are where there were a bunch of personality, situational and environmental problems. Bullying, scandals, shoplifting. I'm sure there are those with smooth sailing lives but they don't really stand out since you know, they just continue with their merry lives going along with the flow so there's no need to mind them.

i also recommend reading the short stories because they are too good to be missed out. They are all from the other characters' POV.

The best ones are from Karuizawa. Can't help myself from smiling reading them. Yeah, but make sure you read them along the main story, if you don't want spoilers. <<less

This is the first japanese novel I have read, and it is definitely worthy of being my first. This was very good. At the end of the 3rd volume of the 2nd year, I was left on a cliff hanger. I definitely am interested into seeing what will happen next. Ayanokouji should be able to dodge and defend himself, but I am not too sure if that is what the author is going to do. Anyways I also wish the author wouldn't just reveal everything at the end, and stop... more>> hiding what Ayanokouji is doing from us. Although this is already really good, it could be much better if the author would be build up the schemes and then have everything build up to a really good confrontation (honestly this isn't really what I mean, I just am trying but can't really put it into words) . Anyways Ryuuen is my favorite character so I hope he somehow ends up in class A. Not sure who has the most talent (with information known so far), I originally thought it was Ryuuen but it might be Koenji. Though I don't know the circumstances in how he was raised, he is definitely a prodigy. However, if he was raised in a way similar to Ayanokouji then it would probably Ryuuen who would have a higher talent. I really don't know enough about Koenji to be sure yet though. Anyways I wonder what the author is going to do with Ryuuen. He will be able to easily crush Ichinose, and Sayakanagi should be a little bit harder, since even though she will be easily dealt with (using violence) she still is a much better leader than Ichinose. Anyways I am just rambling with my review but ig thats because the story isn't finished yet. Anyways this would be in a while if it happens, but having a university for elite students that all graudated from Class A's in different countries would be even better than this if done right. Plus the language barrier would be simple since they can just english, since it is reasonable to assume these people would be able to speak english to a certain extent. Anyways I'm just rambling so I will just end this review. All in all this is a really good light novel series, but it could be so much better. <<less

Overall the story is good, but sometimes it can unnecessarily lengthen some topics. Main character super smart
but he is almost 0 in terms of social skills and this can be annoying at times. Also, the character has a power-saving fetish that can be very annoying. Please read at your own risk.

This is currently my most fav novel ever. Imma say this kind of story is really great with good pacing. It's a story about high school teenagers chosen as a students in ADHS (a top school in Japan). And Ayanokouji (The MC is amongs them). He got in class D (class full of defects) bcus they deemed of him as only worthy as those with defects (but is it the truth tho? Read it). He is the irregular, he just wants a peaceful life, a normal life like a normal... more>> students. But as the story goes on, the troubles also theres to cause problems to his peaceful life.

If you want to know the MC, imagine most successful peoples in term of academics and athletically, musically, etc in a body of one. Not really unrealistic since there exists/existed many humans with godly capabilities. There are atleast a hundreds or thousand kids records as a prodigies. It's not like Ayanokouji created any time machines or something like that. The only things that unrealistic is the environment he grew up in (Maybe it's unrealistic.. But well they were also something like that in the past years).

Ayanokouji is like most human even as exceptionally capable human he is still curious about something. He wants to learns more about what the place he grew up with can't teaches him in ADHS. It's a story with slow pacing at first then bam slowly Ayanokouji starts to reveals more and more. He is physically emotionless with a basic comprehension on normal feelings. So he wants to know what ADHS can show him maybe finally he will feels something more strongly.

He also seems to wonder if human are truly equal or not (for him the answer is No for example is his existence). But he hopefully hopes someone will prove him wrong. In the WR he is unbeatable and he knows the world is a large place and there are many humans who could excel better on something better than him. Even as he wants normal peaceful life he wants to also see if someone can beat him just to spite on his father creation.

The side characters also done well. They have their own personalities, stories and relevant for the stories. They have their own specialties.

The story is such a thrill bcus it's not a school where they only just compete in academically but also athletically, strategically and everything to create a students with top qualities. They need to survive in a certain conditions to compete as a class and sometimes as an individual to reach the goals of everyone (Becomes class A before graduation).

The MC seems perfect really on outside and inside but he never really consider himself as perfect only others who knew him consider him as perfect, a masterpiece. At first he is using others as a puppet to assures his peaceful life. But as the story goes he also develops a real emotions slowly. And if the other reviews think it is more interesting with someone without dull person Ayanokouji, I don't think it is true. I have read many fanfics who tried adding more emotions on their oc MC and I feel most of them becomes kinda generic and edgy. Atleast with Ayanokouji with his dull outside he is kinda funny with his cluelessness and his inside basically not understand some things and funny refutes as his monologues has more emotions than his outside. With Ayanokouji being that emotionless anyone even the readers can't deny that this dude probably has rough childhood. Ayanokouji is kinda like a mix of psychopath and sociopath at the border of either of them but since his monologues is different from what I expected from sociopath and psychopath I can't put him in either of one.

Although passive a lot, he is extremely op. When it comes to physical ability, academics, general intelligence/decision making skills, and manipulation. He is a cruel, cold, human who is trying to to find the meaning of being 'normal'. 5/5

This novel simply revolve around our MC cuz he is simply OP. When you read this novel you have to understand our MC personality first to understand his actions. The over all story is just very slow and focus on the development of MC (his background is different so his thought process isn't normal) which I find it very interesting. The plot contains some loopholes but acceptable for me. And yes, Sakayanagi best girl!!!!!
