Avid readers of quick transmigration novels will find this story rather fresh.

From what I've read so far, the author has taken the familiar tropes of the genre and began experimenting with them. The three translated arcs all vary quite a bit in story structure and delivery, with the first being the most straightforward/familiar given the quick trans genre. The story follows Lu Heng, a talented new recruit in an afterlife office that specializes in resolving the regrets of strong souls to purify them and prepare them for the reincarnation cycle. It really does feel like he's part of a bureaucracy, but not really a cold/strict one, which is nice.

I'm a fan of the the MC. He's not quite as blatantly a Gary Stu as in other works, though make no mistake - he still is one. He doesn't suffer from the neuroses and hangups other system-bound MC's often do for the sake of drama or "humor". He's hard working, easy going, and once he's made a decision, he goes forth with quiet determination and passion; yet refreshingly, it's never played up by the author in long passages that extol his good and pure virtues. Such a well adjusted character can come off as a bit dull in a dramatic work, however, which I've seen criticisms for in other reviews. What it boils down to is that he isn't very dramatic, even though the situations he finds himself in are. He's like a steady boat that I find myself rooting for along his voyage across the turbulent waves.

It's worth noting that the arcs contain a number of side characters that are distinct and memorable, though they aren't necessarily crucial to the events of the story. It gives these worlds a more organic quality. The first arc's epilogue highlighted this, but it's more noticeable in the second arc onwards. This is quite rare in these types of novels which usually only develop the two leads as sympathetic characters. It's even rarer that these characters don't serve to directly fawn over the leads or act as foils.
Spoiler

Like f†ck if I remember what the antagonist's name was in the first arc even though I read it a few hours ago because he was so generic, but I still remember the name of the brother who showed up 3 times and contributed nothing to the storyline, and I still remember the personality tics of the random person who featured in the first epilogue.

[collapse]

It's also worth noting that the 'system' is not a major presence/character, which I find to be a major relief.

Thus far, neither the MC nor ML have found themselves in the same character archetypes and situations time and time again. Consequently, the relationship dynamic between the two leads has been different in each world. This makes it slightly harder to get a read on their core personalities and identifying habits compared to other world hopping stories. It's clear that they respect each other as equals, though. Their relationship is bittersweet, tinged with events that bring to mind works such as Heroic Death System. Their love isn't so much "We are the alpha couple that can topple kingdoms and are the object of envy by everyone else" but more "You mean the world to me, and it's really no one's business but ours." I'm also celebrating the fact that they're both manly men and there's no real focus given to who's a top/bottom or sore waists. (The faster we get rid of that trope the happier I'll be)

Potential readers might want to know that action sequences and "face slapping" schemes and scenes are often reduced to a footnote or two by the author. They exist, but it's not necessarily given focus. Instead, we are treated to extended redemption arcs and tragic love epics. I for one am not complaining.

It doesn't have one of those annoying chatty/whiny Systems. Plus points for that.

MC is super serious about his tasks... it's cute. He hasn't noticed that the ML is starting to like him more than the original love interest.

The translation for this novel is pretty good. (´▽`)

What sets this novel apart from the sea of similar novels is the ML and his relationship with the MC.

Male Lead is powerful in each world, but he is never overpowered. He does not have the power to help MC with his missions or change the fate of the world. In every world, he lives by the world's rules.

Even though his love for MC is burned into his soul, it does not mean that he wants to sleep MC as soon as he sees him. His process of falling in... more>> love is different every time, but so far every time felt very natural. For example, in one arc he had a crush at first sight, but was so straight and dense that he did not realize two men can be in love with each other until about the middle of the arc.

Their relationship is very natural, the 'overbearing gong chasing a somewhat unwilling shou' trope is thrown out of the window. Instead, MC often takes initiative to do the intimate stuff (which is barely present so far) and ML's pride doesn't suffer from having submissive titles like MC's 'Queen' or 'junior disciple'. He does not feel the need to be constantly dominant in a relationship and treats MC as his beloved equal, not as a 'cute little wife'.

For me, male lead can make or break a romance novel, no matter if it's BL or BG. Main protagonist is the person who is supposed to act the most in a story. However, a lot of authors ignore that, and let the male lead do all the protagonist-y acts, while having MC swooning and blushing on the side (unless they are too busy being tsun). This novel is like a breath of fresh air with a male lead who is a devoted love interest and not an omnipotent plot device. <<less

Well, this is... something.

How to Die as Heavy as Mount Tai is one of those novels I really wanted to like since it had some interesting world ideas and an actually sweet male lead who isn't an overbearing a**hole, but unfortunately it crosses the line for me as a face-slapping novel. By that I mean, its revenge always feels way, way too excessive. Literally every single world I've read so far has had me going, "Man, this guy did not deserve this." It's also notable because everyone who has been... more>> face-slapped has been, lo and behold, someone who has hit on/been in love with/had a crush on the male lead! To the point that it feels like they're not so much being punished for whatever deed they did before, but rather for daring to hit on the protagonist's man.

And, yes, I know in most of them, the protagonist himself doesn't actually do much face-slapping. The face-slapping happens as per narrative convention. I'm taking a Doylist, not a Watsonian, perspective here, OK? And saying that the punishment these "villains" get from the narrative is excessive.

Spoiler

Like, OK, first world dude jeopardized the mission by being super ignorant and reckless (which inadvertently sends our protagonist on a fatal mission) but, wow, forgive me, I guess I'm a bleeding heart for believing that ignorance doesn't justify being human trafficked essentially and r*ped for the rest of his life.

Third world, I can kind of understand why the guy had to die since he (again, out of ignorance) almost caused the apocalypse, but I definitely did not think his boyfriend deserved to die for, basically, being a bad communicator and not properly talking things out with his significant other. The guy was a good guy! And to just have the protagonist (and the narrative) essentially say, "He asked for it, " when he died nameless on a mountain because he was trying to find medicine for his boyfriend... Honestly, I felt like this novel was super malicious at that point and I couldn't continue.

[collapse]

OK, I actually see a pattern now that I'm typing these things out. It's that these antagonistic figures are never deliberate in whatever they do. They always end up f*cking things up on accident. And while I'm a huge believer in impact superseding intent, I feel the scale of their punishments are way over the top for their (oftentimes, kind of understandable) mistakes. The narrative never even gives them a chance to try and fix it, for pete's sake!

In all honesty, the novel just sometimes feel way too apathetic to human life and suffering and lowkey vicious for me to enjoy. It's not the worst QT novel I've read, but it's certainly the one that has stuck with me the most negatively. (Probably because it had some good points that it's bad points stick out even more.) <<less

This QT novel has very unique twists to each arc outside of the usual genres.

Spoiler
    • ABO arc in which MC is a beta and there is no s*x at all (shocking for an ABO novel amirite)
    • Princess Pope x Dragon in a world of fantasy turned... science?!
    • Apocalypse but it's actually wuxia
    • MC masquerades as a woman for an entire arc
    • Wuxia world turned Boku No Hero Academia where everyone livestreams
    • MC's name is Lord Kitty
    • Transmigrating into an otome game turned rebirth and then rebirth and then rebirth
[collapse]

MC is an acting king, but his true personality is basically unknown since he's playing a bunch of roles. He's one of those fluid personalities encompassing everything and nothing. Same goes for ML, whose personality is different in every arc. However, their tale is pretty cute and they're respectful partners. There's not really any of that crazy possessive blackbellied gong stuff going on.

BUT WHAT THE HELL, THAT ENDING!! So unsatisfying! UGH!!!

Spoiler

It's basically revealed that MC and ML are precursors to gods and universally strong entities born of chaos. In order to resolve ML's obsessions, MC accompanies him through many worlds, and there are two very short sub-arcs that contribute practically nothing to the story.

The novel ends with one of the arcs and then MC and ML just meet each other in an empty space. No closure!! The only semblance of resolution is found very early on in one of the extras of the 3rd arc, where it's mentioned that MC and ML revisited one of the old worlds.

[collapse]

Anyways, read it for the arcs but not the overarching story because you won't find any closure here.

I like to hate my villians OK? I like to see them faceslapped so hard I pity them then remember what they did to the MC and MLoveInterest and be like "do it again!!" But I can't do that in this novel. The people who get punished are s*upid yes but not bad people so I really cant advocate for their horrible punishment.

This novel got the ML right which I cant say for most novels with this trope but it failed to transition the MC and his roles. I felt... more>> like he lacked empathy for those people he played, like they were just a job him which makes it hard to like. Especially in the first arc, I had no idea how he or the original host felt about anyone! And the ending was sh*t! They tried to make it touching but the plot holes😱. How did ML fall for Carlo in one world then allow him to be............ in this one? And if he loved MC all along how did he end up with Carlo in the first universe?

Its not horrible but Ive truly read better and worse.

This story is a similar style and format to many of its Web Novel Counterparts.

It has a premise of watching one character jump from world to world, except rather than being run by a ‘system’ – the entity in charge of whichever human is assigned to go through numerous worlds with web novel premises – the main character works a ‘9 - 5’ job for a specific type of rebirth storyline.

This novel assumes that you’re already familiar with this type of story – what a system is and how it... more>> works, plus common tropes of the genres typical for web novels – because it speeds through a lot of exposition in the beginning. If you are familiar, its not hard to comprehend the idea of there being a bureaucratic system dedicate to a specific type of trope, someone who has grievances about they way they die.

Spoiler

It a world hopping story with a unique base.

[collapse]

It flies through a lot (finishing all the basic exposition, introduction to the first arc, and then drops you into the action by the end of the first chapter) in order to get to the stuff that most people would essentially read this kind of story for.

I would have enjoyed seeing a more unique way in which the main character could fill out these requests, but it’s not meant to dive deep into the meta of the genre, it’s meant to be a fun read. And it is so far.

Here’s a probably helpful note for the first chapter because it took me a bit before I understood what was happening? It’s a guess, so read at your discretion:

Spoiler

When the main character (Lu Heng) first wakes up in his client’s (Reiner Hart) world, the face he sees is not his client’s but his own made to look similar to his client. I’m assuming that Lu Heng was suppose to wake up in Reiner’s body it was suppose to look exactly like Reiner, and the fact that Lu Heng didn’t was a major issue — hence why both the main character and his system are worried and confused.

I like the writing style of the author. Its engaging and very easy to read. You dont tire of it easily too, She says the events beforehand and as you read you connect it bit by bit with how loosely she writes her sentences, giving you more room to imagine the plot.

Arc 1 is really good, I feel like im already satisfied with the events of it therefore I have a high bar for the next arc. Even if I have read lots of novels with systems or 2nd chances... more>> or transmigrations, this was one of those fics I hold dearly in my "best novels list", I could see myself rereading this novel for many years to come. In fact, just this week ive reread it all thrice.

Please do read this novel, its really lovely ^^ ill give it a 100%. <<less

This was depressing.

I had no idea a novel could break my heart this much. Even the first arc made me break down. I still reread it from time to time just for the sake of going on a feels trip QAQ Of course, other arcs are heartbreaking as well, but the first arc especially sealed the deal for me.

Basically:

    • Not for the weak-hearted (why are you even here...)
    • Not for those who dislike reading long chapters and long arcs
    • Not for those who want fluffy moments (quickly scram, you'll get your heart broken)
    • Perfect for you who like tragedy stories
    • Might make you even more depressed than before
Each arc provides a necessary background story that supports the world-building so we can understand it better. Sometimes, these details might seem excessive and too long, but it IS important. It makes the world complete, not just like a makeshift world. Thus, we can get absorbed more into the story. The pace is slow and each chapter has a lofty word count which can seem like a hassle but rest assured, each word contributes to the story.

A truly satisfying read, a solid 5 from me!

A rather mellow read.

The protagonist is calm and collected. At most he'll throw a small fit when the male lead acts ridiculous or overly possessive, but in general his attitude is rather like a steady boat on a small stream. The male lead on the other hand is the standard, "I'm pretty much yandere for you but I will never hurt you", vinegar pot like most other stories. He gets props for considering mc's feelings and respecting his autonomy instead of trying to control him like some of the more... more>> disgusting male leads that pop up, but there really isn't much else to note about him. Overall, it comes off as a bit predictable and lacking in unique chemistry.

The author generally tries to be a bit more creative with their settings, but the overall premises are similar to other quick wears out there. Honestly, I liked the first arc the most because of the strength of emotion it goes through. The rest of the arcs are fine but it never hits the emotional highs of the first.

I do have a bit of a problem with the ending. What the heck is happening there lol?

Spoiler

It's revealed that the MC and ML are fundamental beings of the universe born from chaos itself. Despite how the last arc ended, this feels so out there, I can't help but go wtf. A lot of authors try to pull some sort of reasoning for the quick wears but this feels out of left field.

[collapse]

Overall, it's an alright book. I would suggest it over a lot of the other questionable works floating around, but temper your expectations. <<less

If you ask me to rate the first world, it will be 10/10.

But if we're looking at the entire novel, it's 6/10 at best.

Now, I can understand, this kind of novel is usually only good in the first arc, or the first several arcs, before going down the drain. Except for QWTFOD, I instead found the first arc of FoD pretty lacking and... boring, I also dislike the ML quite a lot in the first arc. But others are all good in their first arc.

Now, I can go all day... more>> ranting about how awesome the first arc is and how worth-it it was. I'm giving you a good spoiler.

Spoiler

The ML was actually in love with the MC even before the transmigration.

Yeah, B****es! The ML was f*cking in love with his childhood friend! And in the original story, he WAS in love. But along the time, he was slowly disappointed with the original owner's shift of personality to be more and more against their original owner-

WHICH IS not willingly, you must note. The original soul shifted his personality to be pro-government rather than the military is because he knew they're treading in the narrow cliff, and their squad is a special squad that is too famous for its own good. The original soul knew that if he didn't quickly maintain a balance, some people above would probably get rid of them, hence, he was being pro-gov to maintain that balance even in the face of his bestfriend's disappointment.

The original soul know his bestfriend was too much of a free soul and want him to stay that way, and instead sacrifice himself to be a strict, rule-abiding, cold robot. Which was a huge leapt of personality in ML's opinion, as the original soul was actually very playful, naughty, and fun, The ML even stated that all the mischievous 'fun' ideas of rebellion back in their academy days were all proposed by the original soul. Hence, probably why the ML fell for the original soul even way before the MC transmigrated over.

In the original story, the ML grew more and more disappointed to the original soul and their misunderstanding was not cleared. he instead came to fall in love with an omega while having a fall-out with his bestfriend, they were 'torn apart' by the original soul because Omega wasn't allowed in a military (unless they removed their gland). And the bestfriends split up in bad term, in a deadly fight against alien race, the bestfriend duo weren't together and the ML was too devastated over the loss of the Omega Supposed-Protagonist, before the S-P ran to help and with their love they managed to save the day, condemning the bestfriend at the end of the day, forcing him to die in vain.

In the fixed story with the MC, however, the MC conveyed the real reason why 'him' (meaning the original soul) did all those things and the ML was touched that his mischievous bestfriend being so restrained and rule-abiding for his sake. And they ended up to never had a fall-out, the ML stayed in love with the MC ('s skin, really). Communication is indeed the key. But still, their story was fated to end in tragedy.

AAAH!! If only the original Reiner spoke up and explained himself, my ship would probably set sail far away, without even the need of someone to transmigrate over! I'm adopting those two bestfriends! I'll make sure they'll get their own story which end happily without a transmigrator helping them through! I'll write something that has Hewitt (XiuYiTe) to reincarnate back to their childhood or something! My original Reiner couldn't be dead this way!

[collapse]

So yeah, it was very great. Though, the MC is a bit too bland. (Honestly, I stayed for the plot, the MC's character is decent and smart but just too... bland and in-the-line. If the plot is ugly, with the personality like MC, I would have dropped this.) So yeah.... The first arc is great.... The arcs after that, however.... <<less

first arc was okay

had its problems that other people have mentioned but my main concern is Authors not knowing how to write someone falling in love so just goes from them being normal to "he noticed his jade this that and the other thing, his ears were red" every 2 chapters until it ends

then Arc 2 was absolutely tr*sh, MC starts OP yay! Then Author immediately cripples him, gives him amnesia, only makes him feel good near the ML and makes him act like a child

did I mention that the... more>> Amnesia conveniently only forgets his memory of him being a worker in the underworld, still has his memories of Earth mind you, YET HE STILL ACTS LIKE A CHILD

Mmm it's alright. Better than the tr*shy BL QTs, but definitely not all that remarkable either.

The main thing I liked about this story is how caring & non-yandere the ML is. I think that counts for a lot lol. But I personally didn't like the loopholes & lack of attention to detail on the part of the author in many of the arcs. The first arc was good; it seemed like based on the settings, MC had a proper sense of his client as well as his role. However, many... more>> subsequent arcs that disappeared. For the most part, it just became MC=client. For example, there are many things he shouldn't have wondered as the helper, but he did because the author was too immersed in writing him into client. Idk, author did it accidentally but I personally felt it disconcerting. He only regained his knowledge of the future & important plot points whenever it was important, but it seems he utterly forgot it afterwards.

Also, a lot of the developments it seems he predicted he really had no way of knowing it would happen. It's more like plot just happened to set him on the right path. Idk, based on the description, he should've been "scheming" to complete the tasks yet he hardly had to do anything and it would just work out for him. I'm not a fan of such plot convenience personally.

When he's in the client, rather than him not OOCing it feels more like he's not allowed to say things about his rebirth or get close to ML arbitrarily. The first arc it felt like he tried hard to stay in role, but subsequent arcs I felt like that's just his character and it doesn't really matter. Like arc2 he had amnesia for most of it so OOCing wasn't even a thing, and then arc3 had a similar character to arc2.

Although I say some lack of attention to detail, the arcs are quite in depth and the developments are quite original. It's still an okay read. I'm especially interested in the current arc 5 hahaha bending the stallion of fate! <<less

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. This book sets the precedence for what a world-hopping MC with a system should he like.

Most times, there books with the same background just "cheat" with their overpowered systems or by going out-of-character (when they claim they are not).

I love this book because the background for the world-hopping is well thought out and not some random act of luck. The missions are set, the system doesn't give plotline-breaking advantages, the MC has to actually think his way out, while acting like his predecessor and at the same... more>> time, he must follow all the paths his predecessor took, mistakes and all, but change the ending.

Aiyo, even the faceslapping has to wait till the end, truly a professional world-hopper! <<less

The first chapter skips through thoughts like crazy. It's an incoherent info dump. You can basically skim through chapter one and get a feel for the the type of story it is. Either you'll be okay with the writing style enough to stay or you'll hate it and drop.

Now that I think about it the story is like the description. See how its perfectly normal then suddenly half way through it noticable becomes a garbaled mess of words and thoughts? The story is like that.

An absolute nightmare to read whilst on mobile. The site has like 10 ads sprinkled throughout the text in every single chapter after the first dozen. The site alone made my battery life go down by 4% with how insane the consumption rate is. Story's fine, nothing too special, but it 100% isn't worth my phone heating up after just 5 minutes of reading. I'm dropping this novel purely for the sake of my electronics and for my peace of mind.

Edit: Just realized that I should also give a... more>> consensus on the overall book that isn't tainted by my hate for the site.

Plot wise, it's generic. It's not unique, it's not the first time that I see an MC who's like a sort of worker who sets off to complete people's dying wishes. The first arc remains the one that was the most appealing, even with the info dumps. Probably would've been better off making the first arc a novel, to be honest, but hey. I was intrigued at first, since unlike every other quick transmigration novel, MC doesn't fall in love in the first arc and I hoped that that would continue to happen, but I was wrong. The second arc followed the generic « falling in love with a child of destiny » route, but with major info dumps littered about.

As the novel goes on, you start to realize that it's literally just become one of those face-slapping novels, but without good villains. Like okay, I can get why some of them got what they did, but it's usually such a far stretch. Only actual reasonable one is in the first arc since the dude did put 90% of the army in danger, but hey, we can't have nice things now, can we?

The characters are very forgettable, even the MC and the ML. Their personalities have been dumbed down for plot convenience, and the original hard-working MC is later reduced to « face-slapping protagonist ». ML isn't a total nut job though, which is nice to see, I guess? He isn't a total as*hole and doesn't try to force anything on his lover, which is sadly rarely seen in qt novels. But then again, he's just like every other ML in every other aspect, he just so happens to have more respect for his lover.

All in all, not the best or worst of the genre, it's just a generic revenge qt book after a couple arcs (but with unwarranted extreme revenge plots). <<less

Very good. The first arc made me bawl my eyes out--repeatedly.

The overarching setting is established early on, and the MC is fully aware of what his job entails and what his purpose is. He knows why he is going into these worlds, and he acts according to the role he is cast as. I really love having background established in these novels. The plots are interesting, and side-characters are also developed and given attention to. They all grow as the plot moves on. Great pacing. The writing is well-done and... more>> difficult to put down.

My only complaint thus far is that some of the action scenes are skimmed over. Although the intrigue and developments are good and exciting and I couldn't put this series down, it'd be nice to fill in some of the holes in the combat and action scenes.

It's like a mixture of Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil and Heroic Death System. Strongly recommended. <<less

typical of this world-hopping genre, this novel feature a few different settings and plunges its main character into these settings. What separates this novel from others within this genre however, is that the protagonist do this as a job, so there's at least an explanation on why there's a world hopping in the first place. The other thing is that the 'system' that usually a staple in this genre and doubles as a cheat for the protagonist take a back seat in this novel.

Of the eight arcs/setting/worlds presented in this... more>> book, some are more interesting than others. The authors actually putting some effort in building these worlds and except for the first one, the others are not just conventional setting like zombie apocalypse, but conventional setting with some twist (ex: zombies but with demon, cultivation but also an otome game).

The protagonist himself are bland but profesional (?). As world hopping is his job, he will typically follows the characterization of the body that he wears. The ML is the typical super-competent-and-possesive ML. The relationship between these two are while not exactly slow burn, it takes a few worlds to build, and the dynamic afterwards is quite good.

Overall, an okay read. 4/5 stars. <<less

I read why other people like this, and it's because the ML is good. Which just isn't enough to save this for me.

My god is this story dense. The chapters are long and cram-packed with too much information.

I loved the first arc. As someone who is not a fan of AlphaxOmega dynamics, I much prefer when Betas get some attention. I liked the story and I liked that the villain wasn't really a villain, they were condemned for the consequences of their selfishness and recklessness. Good intentions aren't good enough.

At... more>> the second arc was when I started flagging. It's a cultivation arc with a big universe built around it. There's a lot that goes on in this in a small amount of space, but it was just too much. I forced myself through it because I liked the couple.

Come to the third arc, I saw 'zombies' and said 'ok'. Then I saw 'cultivation' and 'zombies=demons lol' and said 'oh god please no more'.

The ending also looks to be given away in Arc 2. If it's what I think it is, there's nothing here you haven't seen a thousand times before.

So that's where we end this.

One if the reviews said if you read this kind of thing it will be a breath of fresh air. I couldn't disagree more. It's more like the air inside a coffin.

It's not poorly written or edited, but it's heavy. The MC and ML are decent. But I think this is more suited to people who like cultivation stories than people like me who like fun. <<less
