I really enjoy isekai maou, I watched the anime and I honestly thought the entire story ended there because honestly It's not a bad ending in my opinion.

Then I found the novel and started reading (worth noting that I started reading from volume 3 instead of volume 1) I have to say, if you dislike how the MC is socially awkward and only does demon king roleplay, then that's not good since he doesn't change his way of being (much).

I really enjoy the novel way more than the anime simply... more>> because you can actually tell the protagonist's thought process so it at least gives you some insight into his personality.

While the anime did this, the novel just does it so much better... Now into the actual story.

It's interesting probably the biggest thing I like about is that the MC despite being "weak-minded" does not get dragged around by his harem girls like literally every other adventure harem I've read (maybe I am unlucky? I certainly find it annoying) so that's good.

Despite the MC not changing his way of being entirely there's a lot of character development from my point of view, while the MC stays with the same personality his behaviour changes he becomes more "gentle" (in his intentions not the way he behaves) (<-- I am well aware that it sounds contradictory) so that's good enough for me in terms of character development since it follows the premise of the protagonist being socially awkward unless he roleplays.

The other characters get a lot of development however for me the biggest development were Lumachina, Horun and Krum, they all got a lot of development. So as far as character development there's a lot.

The story is nice in terms of arcs they are all rather interesting in my opinion however coming from volume 9 to volume 10 it feels extremely anti-climatic just because the arc was not as heavy at least in terms of development towards the entire story itself.

Something worth mentioning from me being biased is that I personally like the edgy equipment names and spell names, as even if it sounds like a joke, I can actually picture all of these items in an mmorpg compared to some other novels which have either less edgy or simple names or just way too far-fetched so that's a bonus in my book.

If I had to mention something that I disliked about the novel I think it would simply be that it truly doesn't make sense to me that the mc's party is literally broke even after all their achievements also that he is hesitant to kill people and I can't even recall if he ever actually killed something aside from monsters. <<less

I really like this series. It's nothing too deep, or too emotional, it's a light hearted light novel with the recurring dark moments. The MC is Op, yes, but not extremely OP. He still has his flaws and shit. I found many people comparing this to overlord and I must say, this is not overlord. The MC was literally a hikki-neet raised in modern society, you can understand his inhibitions with killing. Overlord has a completely different setting and tone and this series has a completely different setting and tone,... more>> overlord is a badass, action type light novel with world-building elements while this series is a comedic, character driven light novel, and I like what it provides the reader. Yes, the MC is cliche at times and the plot may seem to drag on a little, but overall, I got what I expected out of this light novel and I liked it. <<less

Main Problem with this work: Just after 2 volumes the number of socio- and psychopaths is too damn high. Not to mention the device which always is nothing but a "bummer" in these works: ... more>>
Spoiler

Mind Control.

[collapse]
What happens twice will happen thrice and even more times, no doubt. This is not comedy, only ecchi and forced action.

A little list of lunatics
Spoiler

That mage dude whose name I already forgot, generally the motives of those lunatics is always the same "My in-group is the greatest one and any disrespect deserves dead!"

Keera Greenwood - The one who wants his little sister to bear his child at all costs, despite not really loving her and considering to kill her after.

Galford - Someone who just loves to make everyone his enemy, ordering massacres and wars which have no escalated, pointlessly being hostile to the one who saved his oh-so-dear town....

Alicia - The knight who lies about wanting to protect and instead wants to eradicate but the most cruel race, and humans are just 2nd place. By the by, having that betrayal foreshadowed is also not really good...

[collapse]

I was here for the comedy&ecchi, not for dung loads of insane hatred without reason even. I started just when the first episode of the anime aired and was interested enough and could waste my time, now I do not think that I could watch the anime further which will probably entail the first two volumes (even if episode 1 covered the first chapter and there are 3 per volume). The end of episode 1 simply repeats to often and is revolting,

Ironically enough, it is not like there was much to laugh about, with the sole gag being who summoned him. Otherwise, er... sure there were light (and not ecchi) moments but I could not name anything one could find hilarious. Soothing at best and ruined by mind control, discrimination and lunatics.

Nothing much to say about MC and his two s*aves, I do not dislike 'em and would go so far and say that they deserve a better work. The premise of a misunderstood Maou who is acting arrogant but is actually a nice-awkward guy sure is compelling, for me at least but the direction is utterly disappointing. They do not even view him as Maou! <<less

Accidentally pressed evaluation on 4. But it deserves the best 5! One of the most enjoyable novels I read. There is good amount of comedy and decent amount of romance subplot. Illustrations are incredible. Auphtor and translarors are very talented and professional people.

MC's act is rather half-assed, he's acting like a demon lord yet he's too soft (not killing any human so far, even though they're obviously seed for future trouble. Really?), careless (didn't do enough testing on his own abilities, and running around proclaiming himself a demon lord), and inconsistent (his weirdly high moral standard often water down his demon lord act, causing him to sometimes being a bit further on the "bad" side and return to being a "good" guy in the next moment.)

Yeah, he's nowhere near invincible in... more>> sense that his physical strength is only equal to a human elite and his mana run out rather quickly, but he should realize that he's among THE top existence in the entire world. I can't really stomach the fact that MC have THAT high of morality, after gaining such power. I mean, he's low enough to mu*der the crap out of couples in a net game...

I just treat it like a lighter version of Overlord. At least there won't be any traumatic death... I hope. <<less

I've read everything so far before hiatus. Anyone new checking this should know where the novel leaves off is a decent end point.

Live the MC who's so socially awkward that he pushes his demon lord persona so far to hide it that he comes off very assertive. Rare for a JP novel. And when MC faces real threats we get to see how he was able to act as a demon lord other players would try to beat and failed. MC is very skilled and grows more so in the... more>> world based off it.

The harem which is basically just the two girls are great. Their designs are amazing and their personalities are good.

The world itself is amazing and much left to be explored, so I hope author comes back one day. <<less

very fun concept and the anime might be very fun to watch, but the novel is very tiring to read.

the comedy here is all misunderstandings and that becomes bland sooner or later so it isn't really funny.

the MC also doesn't really grow. he stays indecisive the entire novel and as more and more enemies appear, it becomes frustrating.

also the MC doesn't really think about anything on his own and just followed his two summoners...

The character of MC killed the novel, I know this is novel fantasy and all but the character of MC seems to OA to me, I mean even a socially, I'm pretty sure an socially inept person has at least a level of common sense in interaction, it's seems pushed but the author over empisizing to the point that is not realistically to a person who inept in socializing, even I'm bad with crowds and kind of introvert, but reading Tru the novel even reading to the manga and watching... more>> the anime, just their conversation it self when monologue of MC differed from what he says seems pushed just to show the readers and watchers that the MC is socially inept and reckluse seems s*upid really. It has nice plot but the author over empisizing that character killed it for me no character building MC and heroines. If that's the character you want you should have not put monologues of the MC, and just slowly build the MC, and giving flashback lines on how MC is socially inept. I mean really <<less

The one thing I don't like about this manga is how much of a push over MC is. I guess he's a shut-in in the first place, lived alone and have zero interaction with other people, and lived in a country like Japan so this spineless character is made. Like, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME an enemy come, no matter how horrible the crimes of said enemy, he just won't kill them. Every girls around him have experienced kidnapping and almost r*pe at least once. Like, come on. They're tr*sh, kill them!!!... more>> It's Isekai! Not fricking Japan.

Which means, you will see that enemy comes back, and bit his ass 10 times harder.

It's the most infuriating aspect of this story.

It's a pity because I personally like how the relationship were built among the characters, the world building isn't half-bad either. And MC honestly have many good qualities to him that if he's not such an idiot I would have loved this character.

So I did wanted to know how the story progresses, but this one quality of MC is really turning me off. <<less

I'm only rating 5☆ because the other reviews are insufferable.

A character having a personality you don't like isn't a story flaw.

Here's a few of the story flaws with shokan shojo:

1. Somehow no one is able to see through the MCs social anxiety dispite how obvious it is. It is fine that he has it, but it's ridiculous how much he "trips up" without anyone catching him in an act. They allude to the possibility that Rem can tell multiple times, but any implications or effects that this would have... more>> on their relationship is ignored.

2. The rabbits are p*do bait.

3. The connection between the MC and the world isn't explored nearly as much as it could be and abandoned the moment that the possibility arises.

4. In the instances where it seems like the MC will have some sort of struggle or goal to overcome, he's able to do so with little effort. This undercuts scenes that may have otherwise been effective emotionally.

5. Dispite the fact that there are multiple instances of characters with equivalent power to Diablo, he's still treated as an insane force of nature by the world that's around him. They can see his power, they would have context for people as powerful, and yet they still treat him as a god far too often. This is another example of underestimating political minds when it comes to reading others.

Other than that? Pretty solid. The relationships building with the girls is believable and it doesn't belittle their roles in the story. Rem and Shera are pretty decent characters who have likable personalities and a variety of traits. The actions of Diablo are consistent (unlike Overlord where Momonga has a tendency to flip-flop between competent and incompetent) and believable for someone with a very obvious mental disability. The world itself is well scaled to the levels of the characters and there is a consistent feeling of danger when they get into sticky situations because the author is willing to hurt the MCs.

If you don't like characters who aren't edgy b*d*sses, that's perfectly okay. You are free to read different stories that match your taste. Go read Arefureita or something. <<less

The protagonist is actually negative IQ; typical beta and dense MC. The harem is tr*sh and is only there for the lucky pe*vert moments. The plot armor is so amazingly convenient it gives me an aneurysm every time I see it in action. This novel would've benefited more if it were smut rather than something you're supposed to take seriously.

Anyhow, I like the premise; nothing new but it has its own flavor, it takes some things from Overlord, for example, and some things from generic isekais like desu machi. The... more>> characters could've been very compelling, as well, but at least there's sufficient character development from Diablo and the harem.

In short, infuriating as most isekais, but interesting enough to keep you wondering what's going to happen next. I'd say you should give it a go if you hate yourself and want to suffer.

This is not the worst thing ever imo. I like it more than I hate it. <<less

going pretty well but it kind of fell apart for me when they introduced the golden fruit. Their is a record of people leveling from it and it is in abundance but everyone is still low level.

They should at least clarify if the job class increase is inferior to normal leveling.

Also they should have had the girls mention being able to see through his bullsh*t before they got married because right now the only romantic connection between them is that he is strong and lets them do what they want.... more>> Basically they would fall in love with any beta op MC.

Also the fact that what terrifies most people is the magic reflection that they attribute to him but is really an op item.

Spoiler

Vol 12 has diablo be against a team up and put his wives in more danger just because he is a coward.

In fact diablo has zero team skills at all since he only travels with the girls and solos every fight

[collapse]

While physically diablo is strong, mentally he is the weakest and does not grow at all. <<less

It would be good if Diablo's companions died in front of him, then awaken as true demon Lord. I was expecting this from the very beginning but I'm a bit disappointed it didn't happen, I like the MC but I don't like his attitude letting go all of his enemies and it would be good if he really awaken as a real demon Lord

This novel is pretty bad, but it is not totally unreadable garbage. I wasn't able to project myself into the MC because they were such a loser, but its ok to write stories for the bullied loner or shy virg*n target demographics.

The real problem for me was that each chapter is broken up into 15 pieces. Each piece of a chapter is incredibly short and you have to constantly reload a bunch of pages in the middle of your reading, breaking immersion and preventing you from getting invested.

It doesn't help... more>> that none of these links here actually go to the chapters. They link you to some guy's blog that then links you to the chapter... but those links have all been broken for years. You can't just push the next chapter button, because that link is also broken. You can't go to the project page or chapter index because those links are broken. You end up having to scroll through comments to get a link to yet another site or search it up manually.

If they were to compile the 15 pieces into one solid chapter of reasonable length and fix all the links then I would rate my experience a bit higher. 2.5, very middle of the road, truly average in the ocean of shitty light novels. <<less

Mediocre. The actual rating is probably more like 2.5, since I like a decent amount of the characters and the art is very well done.

This series falls into a similar trap to Arifureta, which is to say that the author doesn't know how to write harem well. You really have to either keep it at or below flirty, or buckle down and pick one of the girls. No, this isn't an adult novel, but for some reason the author decides to write in a few rather le*d scenes. They're not... more>> exceptionally written and usually are led up to by "Diablo, can we do such and such?" "Hmph. Do as you like." Makes me think less of the girls in question, too, since the kind of nonsense mentality leading them to the action presents them as fairly shameless.

Seems like each time the series introduces a good girl, we end up dropping her in some town where we can come back to her later. It honestly kind of makes me wonder what the point in introducing them in the first place is. More than likely, it's the author's way of trying to pare back the harem to the main pair of Rem and Shera, but at a point it feels like these relationships are being shoehorned in.

I'm going to quietly add that one of Shera's main purposes is being a shameless bimbo whose ditziness leads to some of the ecchi situations that happen. The anime did make me like her more, since the ending song (so cute) is actually sung by the CV for Shera.

A more accurate rating for this series would be Fanservice/10, since that's exactly what it is. With clutzy writing and somewhat lazy world-building, I really can't recommend reading the actual plot of this series. If you happen to like this genre or are particularly attached to this story's characters, then go ahead and keep reading. For the new reader, I can recommend reading a volume or two to see if it's to your liking, but the quality drops after 3. At that point save yourself some time and go to a le*d booru instead. Definitely many novels out there much more worth your time. <<less

Rating: 4, Translation: 5

[Rating/Translation scale: 5 = almost all readers may enjoy / infrequent minor errors. 4 = large majority of readers may enjoy / frequent minor errors or infrequent major errors, no difficulty to read. 3 = 50% of readers may enjoy / frequent major errors, unable to understand some sentences or a paragraph in a chapter. 2 = niche audience may enjoy / unable to understand moderate portion of a chapter. 1 = portion of niche audience may enjoy / unable to understand most of a chapter.]

MMORPG player... more>> who is a NEET, plays solo, and is a top player awarded with the title "Demon King" is summoned to another world that is very similar to the MMORPG. His "magic reflection" causes his 2 female summoners to become ens*aved to him. He is a socially inept person, and can only communicate while acting out a Demon King roleplay.

Essentially, each volume deals with each member, or new member, of his harem, as each harem member has her own backstory and problems. MC needs to make income to survive, to investigate what powers he retains, and to find out what similarities there are to the MMORPG, all while the backdrop of the NPC Demon King is being revived and factional conflicts are occurring.

The writing in this series is excellent for a light novel, and the translation is 5/5. The plot has development and transition, the scenes are fully created. This feels like a full novel. Although cliche, side characters usually have a decent amount of backstory and personality. There is decent humor, although is may become old, since the jokes almost always result from the MC's social anxiety and Demon King roleplay, and his inability to normally interact with girls. There is a harem with plenty of ecchi scenes, for those who enjoy the genre. MC faces a variety of opponents and concerns.

The largest criticism for readers may be the MC. He is a pacifist NEET, who is opposite of his roleplay character. He will not finish off the bad guys, even though it might hurt him later. His personality mostly stays unchanged. He starts off OP at level cap, although the story leaves unanswered whether there is a level cap in the new world. Another criticism is the harem relationship. It's mostly ecchi scenes (no romance) caused by the scenario, instead of actual relationship. There are also some slow periods, but definitely no more than the average Isekai novel.

This story has its flaws, but I think it is a good one. I believe, other than readers who strongly dislike the above criticisms, most Isekai fans would enjoy this series.

Other: The volume 6 prologue has just been translated, and there are currently 8 volumes. Volume 1 is no longer available in the fan translation; it is licensed, so you will have to find the official translation. There is a manga, but the translation is currently around 1/3 of volume 3. <<less

I like it. To me, it's ten times better than Overlord. I kinda regret reading Overlord judging from how the MC acts, behavior, and his cruelty. Though it's just my personal opinion, he is an anti-hero after all, right? Overlord aside, this is just my opinion on this novel but since it's still new, don't get your hopes up high.

Anyway, this is a nice novel to me and have lots of potential. Pretty interesting one, y'know.

Good Points : So he’s the otaku guy transported in the other world with his powers from the game Cross Reverie. He’s an OP character since the standards from the game are far higher than in the “reality”. Their levels are far apart each other so he takes it slow and discover the big differences of “ingame” and this new world. He puts on a front of a tough guy when he’s the typical otaku which create funny situations => It’s a bit Overlord, yeah I know but it makes... more>> it good anyways.

Bad Points : He quietly follows the 2 annoying girls that keep having the same conversation of who’s his master when they’re the ones having s*ave collars, while it was a bit funny in the beginning, it’s a rolling gag that have been going for too long. Then, he’s too OP, his level is too high and we don’t see much room for improvement so I don’t expect much progression...

In Overlord, they’re undead who wants to exterminate humans and are mocking everyone since they’re f*cking weak but this novel doesn’t seem to be going in that direction. We’ll have to see... <<less
