On his fifteenth birthday, he is challenged to a duel by his sister to see who will inherit the household and horribly loses, being cast out of his family. Afterwards, he gets treated by the family groundskeepers and receives the family heirloom Gem from him that Lyle’s grandfather had entrusted to him. From there, he begins an aimless journey with his childhood friend and former fiancée, Novem, and the Gem-turned-Jewel that houses the memories, personalities, and Skills of seven of his ancestors.

Honestly a 4.5 (Rounded up to 5 cuz "mr. Lyle~)

This is more a response of Lebrew's review though.

First off:
>I get it, the main character is supposed to be an anti-hero
What? Lyle is so far removed from the trope of being "anti-hero", I don't even know where to start with that. Hell, in the very beginning, we see Lyle cry his eyes out after his family disowns him and kicks him out of the house. > If the author had just toned it down a slight bit
Toned... more>> down what!? In chapter 10, it's the first time Lyle and his party encounter monsters for crying out loud and he uses only 1 skill. He killed most of them but not all. I REALLY don't get what you're complaining about, and quite frankly all the things you've listed are just buzz words.

Real review though:
Lyle's people skill is shit. I'll say it plain as day. He's not a coward or anything, but in the 15 years of his life, the last 5 of those was spent into basically being hated by his whole house and even his parents. So from that angle, its understandable that Lyle's ability to communicate to other is understandable.

Also, the phenomenon "mr. Lyle" balances this out. Where Lyle is afraid addressing the elephant in the room, "mr. Lyle" doesn't care and does it with a huge smile on his face. It's actually a good character device as it balances out his character. As the story goes along, Lyle's character also begins to change and goes closer to "mr. Lyle", though still with restraints.

Most of the other characters are also given a lot of air time, making the pace feel a bit slow. However, the character interactions should keep you well entertained as they are often quite funny. <<less

It has been a long time since I've dropped all japanese novels and never picked up one again because I just hate wimpy, p**sy, undecided, clueless, pushover, dense and pitiable japanese novels MC. Still, misled by the reviews and after a long meditation, I decided to read Sevens.

I was misled to believe that there would be character development and the MC would become somewhat likeable, but all that happens is that he gets stronger but that strenght is totally wasted on the MC who has zero awareness, zero knowledge, zero... more>> thinking capability, zero social skills (he doesn't understand others and doesn't even understand himself), among others deficiencies, just like most jap novels mcs. And after 5 volumes, over 70 chapters, there has been no improvements or character development, MC is still pitiful and makes me wanna puke blood every damn chapter. Besides the MC, there's also too much repetition in this novel, every chapter there is a lot of repetition of old information, and that makes me hate myself for reading this shit. I don't even know how I got so far, I guess I was just hoping the MC would become reliable/smart/sociable or at least develop a thinking brain. I don't recommend this novel, unless you like being tortured or like shitty generic japanese MCs with mental health issues. <<less

I see reviews and wonder if they ever considered anything other than; this character is wimpy or this character is clueless or this character is not OP enough. The story itself is interesting. And in my honest opinion, there is a lot more to a story than being a God with no plot. Character Development:
Of course not all characters are treated with much love from the author, so some may feel lacking in depth. But all in all, you can expect to get attached to some characters.

Spoiler

Personally I'm attached to the Sixth Gen Head of the Walt House. You have been warned this was a spoiler of some sort.

[collapse]

Story Development/Plot:
"Now how about story development?" you ask. Without giving too many details, I'd say: It definitely has a solid plot that it is following. It isn't some random bullsh-t put together.

Although, that does not mean you won't find some holes. *Insert Smart Remark on how a Character should have done so and so*
While it is not perfect it is very tollerable[this is subjective]. Now that may sound contradicting but think of playing a game. You can complete it without the side missions and understand the story in its entirety.

Now to end this short Review which isn't a total spoiler. I would definitely recommend this Light Novel. It is a good read. If you don't like it, then it wasn't for you. Simple as that. You can drop it, read on intervals, etc. It is up to you. All I hope for is:

1) You read this Review and get intrigued
2) Don't make quick judgments due to a numerous amount of poor Reviews (which in my opinion all say the same thing) Always decide if it's worth reading for yourselves.

Some said that the ancestors are noisy and annoying but they're actually the most fun in the story. I hated the first part, the MC felt really useless though he was described him as a person with talent. While reading with expectation to see his growth, it felt like I was crawling. and mr. Lyle FTW.

The only reason I started reading this was the cover. Harem you say? Then why doesnt the cover have a single female in it? I was curious.

For a novel written mostly in first perspective, it has a lot of characters. The author did not fail making them. Too be honest, at first I even thought, all characters were great exept the dull MC.

But I was proven wrong.

... more>> Reads a volume, reads another volume and before I know it, I reached the end of translated novels.

If you look at the volume titles, you'd think that it suppose to end at 9.

Now I have no Idea when the hell would the MC beats the OP antagonist. Character building... yes there is that. Wimpy MC turns shameless. Well not yet exactly, but we are getting there. <<less

As far as chapter 100

A well planned story with a good foundation. Not a story made out of a whim and patched random ideas like other novels. There is a clear growth of the main character

Heroines and side character have personalities which doesn't look artificial

It started a little slow, though it was interesting enough to keep me reading, I wasn't expecting too much from it at first, but I have to say, and this is after I've read several web novels, manga, light novels, paper backs, anime etc (numbering easily in the hundreds when grouped together), this story has to be up there in my faves list, the "mr lyle" scenes are spectacular XD and while sometimes you want to just kick the MC into taking a bit more action with his party, it... more>> doesn't feel rushed and paces quite well and is balanced out with the coming of mr lyle. Pretty good character depth in which everyone has their own quirks and has some actual development and doesn't have one of those stories where you have a MC that is ridiculously weaker than every enemy, gets mocked by everyone and kicks the crap out of them and repeats, which seems to be very popular at the moment, so it's refreshing on that basis. In the first few volumes I would've given this title a solid 3* but now that I've come this far its a 4.8-5* story in my opinion. <<less

One of the best WN I ever read. The main character is not OP nor weak. He building up his power. So do his relationship with women arround him. He is dense and clueless at start, but come on. He was being hated by his whole family for 5 years, from the age of 10 years. A child that young would have personality growing problem. The fact is, by each chapter, his experience increase. Be it for battle, or relationship. He come to understand situation, politic, and woman arround him... more>> even better. That what you call growing!!!!! And its Harem. Natural in fact! <<less

Besides clearly taking this story idea from the female counterpart, it's overwhelmingly amusing story of a man's coming to age. He's trying to find his purpose in world which turns out to save his family from his super villain sister. What makes story great is not MC nor heroines, but his ancestors. This is a story on how his grandparents help him become a man.

There's a harem yes.. But mind it, it the kind that doesn't leave you bad taste. At first I kinda turned off by this evil sister of his. Imoutou-chan should be kawai, adorable, and brocon! But because of lack of reading material and impressed by the sheer number of chapter, I stumble upon this gem.

Lyle as your typical Japanese harem MC is portrayed as dense as black hole, ikemen with blue hair, and OP skill. Thanks to his pheromone to attract trouble and woman alike, he strive his best to... more>> run away from his sister and later

defeat his sister.

The system of the series is kinda what you found at some RPG game, where you slay monster and get exp, but the author manage to explain it in not a gamer way, which quite interesting. All the harem member found up until now has their own unique charm and the ancestor is kindly provide us with their generation's number instead barrage us with their name. There are even Q&A for every volume that hilarious by itself. <<less

It's slightly different than most harem novels I've read so far. Apart from the few later female characters introduced, I find that the character development quite entertaining and you can't help but get attached to all the characters inside as the story goes on.

This story has probably shaved ten years off my life by giving me rage-induced internal bleeding from the sheer amount of irritation I get by trying to read it. I get it, the main character is supposed to be an anti-hero, but there is such a thing as overcommiting. The main character is so pathetic I feel ashamed for being a carbon-based life form along with him. If the author had just toned it down a slight bit I might have been able to withstand reading more than 10 chapters,... more>> but the pure agony of experiencing anything through this guy is too much. At least make it clear that the guy was born with some extra chromosomes instead of having the reader expect him to function as a normal human being. <<less

This was a rough read and I eventually just lost interest. My main issue probably stems from the MC, his interaction with his harem and the blind idiocy which he regularly exhibits. He has his moments of greatness, but for the most part he seems to just bumble along. The pacing of this story feels extremely slow and most of the time I'm waiting for him to finally just get over himself so things can move along.

I have to admit that this story has a fantastic villain. His sister really... more>> makes your skin crawl and her sheer sadism coupled with being completely OP makes her for an extremely compelling villain.

Which is what makes the MC's faults that much more blatantly obvious, I understand that he's meant to undergo some character development but this development is remedial at best. This coupled with his inability to manage his harem (not in the s*xual misogynistic sense, but in the basic personal interaction sense) makes for a very frustrating read.

In short, the MC's shortcomings, poor interpersonal relationships and overall poor pacing made for a frustrating read. That said I still read 9 volumes of it so it has its merits, but I couldn't stand any more of the MC. <<less

The only real flaw in this is that the harem is simply too big which gives little room for the development of the characters, especially those who joined later. Hell at the end we don't even know the name of ~10 of his wives (altho these are the ones he married for political reasons at the very end).

The overall story is good and varied. MC is initialy a total loser with zero character, but there is a reason for that which is later explained in the story. Over the story... more>> his mentality grows from a naive useless child into a scheming adult capable of dominating almost anyone (outside his harem) both mentally and physically thanks to the coaching of his ancestors and the support of his harem.

While the MC is poor at handling the harem, his alter ego MR. Lyle is simply brilliant in every way and more than makes up for it. The ancestors in the jewel are all great characters who greatly contributes to the commedy. I only wish their wives had a bigger role as they seem really interesting aswell.

The main villain is a little lacking in character depth and quite one-dimentional, but she does get the job done and is a constant legitimate threat.

All in all it's in my opinion the best fantasy novel since Mushoku Tensei. <<less

Separate from all the wish fulfillment reincarnation trope, it was a refreshing story that didn't rely so much on plot armor. Some people complain that the MC seems socially inept and clueless but they don't understand thats what happens to people who are locked away from society, especially when you **** all your *******. The author uses this inability skillfully as the MC has to tackle his social skills; not to mention the hilarious gap it creates post-growth. While he does have a power creep, his strength is overshadowed compared... more>> to the combined might of his companions (which is neither a pro or a con, as the theme of the story seems to be comradeship and filial piety).

Pros:
-Story is mostly consistent following the world's law
-Characters are unique with their own personality
-The story elicits emotions from the reader
Spoiler

Though only when ancestors are involved

[collapse]
- Everything has meaning and isn't one dimensional
-Intricate world, each with their own circumstances and needs

Cons:
-The MC is granted a bit too much convenience in terms of skills and will rarely face difficulty, other than interpersonal relationship and Celes.
-The adventure itself was too smooth, pacing is unnaturally consistent
-I do think it's stretching it to have a "mystery" and "tragedy" tag, though I can understand why it's there.

I'd say the story is a 4, but u gotta give Yoraikun his (.... her?) credit. The translator releases chapters frequently and doesn't take any donations! Anyway, for the story itself, it started well for me. A slice of life. A noble chased out of the house and seems lost in life until his childhood friend/fiancee decided to travel along with him....... until he started to collect harem here and there. There are just too many characters to describe and everything started to fall off the place.

After reading all those shitty JP novel, I eventually began to hate JP novels to the bone. I had given up all the expectations of JP novels. But, this novel was enough to reduce all that hate to 55% from 150% in one go!

I was instantly hooked the moment I finished reading the first few chapters. I had no idea that there was such an interesting and well written JP novel out there. The most important reason why I like this novel is the MC is not dense! Yes people,... more>> this novel is written by a Japanese writer, is from Japan AND the MC is not dense. Can you believe it? (I can't)

I personally feel this is a astronomical step in the Japanese LN literature history, its like Man stepping on Moon, it's a huge development. The plot is interesting, the story line is different from other novels. Characters are not two dimensional and feels very much alive.
Their personality is unique and interesting. Don't be discouraged because it has a Harem tag as a person who hates Harem I have to say it is the best well written harem I've ever read in a JP novel.

It has comedy, politics, action and everything is very well written. Actually, even now I can't believe that its a JP novel. I highly recommend it to everybody. <<less

The story starts out good, but the authors goal of endlessly adding to the main character's harem just makes the story confusing. Having a harem of fifteen girls and trying to give them all screen time without slowing the story just made the story incredibly stale and stilted. Chapters are like 1/10 content then the rest is juggling a bloated cast of meaningless waifus. They serve no purpose whatsover in the story leading up to the current chapter. Many of the girls ended up being extremely similar to earlier introduced... more>> girls, and then some girls who were introduced earlier in the story just ended not being mentioned at all. THERE ARE TOO MANY GIRLS IN THE HAREM!!!

The story transitions from a adventuring novel to a war strategy novel incredibly quick, but the MC never makes any decisions. His elders decide everything and plan everything for him, not teaching him anything beyond martial skills. I feel like the character never improves himself in anyway from the beginning of the story to the end.

Due to chapters being inflated by meaningless waifus the story feels rushed as we are already nearing the end of the story and the MC barely accomplishing anything in the world. <<less

Absolutely love this novel. The MC is strong while not being too OP, he has a harem of sorts, and the girls in his harem have decent personalities and backstories. Also the MC is guided by his... 7... ancestors, who teach him the skills they had when they were alive. Really liking the interactions between the characters, and especially between MC and ancestors.

Spoiler

Sadly the ancestors will disappear after Lyle successfully learns all of their skills, which happened to the first 2 ancestors. IMO the author depicted this relationship well, and before I realised I'd already grown attached to the characters and found myself wishing they wouldn't disappear.

Also, I find it weird that Lyle sort of lets his parents lock him up for years while they shower Celes with their love and affection, and then still feeling like he has to prove himself to his parents.

[collapse]

Regarding the harem, the MC is sort of forced to acknowledge that the girls do have feelings for him and that he will not be able to turn a blind eye to their feelings forever (or risk a School Days ending I suppose), but as far as I've read he has yet to actually do anything about it, so if a lack of real progress in that area after 100+ chapters is something you wouldn't like, then this could potentially frustrate you.

That being said, I thoroughly recommend this series. It's definitely worth a read.

P.S. Best Lyle Awards FTW <<less

This story is consistently good from start to chapter 156 imo, with good translation. The harem part does not play a big part of the story like some other harem novels. They are his gf's and are in love/attracted to him but nothing more. Lyle himself is usually more reserved. Definitely worth a read.
