Saying this novel Is better than wmw should be a federal offense, and I'm dead serious. Writing Is mind numbingly inconsistent, a lot of the time author just pulls sh*t straight out of his ass, even when MC reaches stage before siva state you get the feeling that he Is just tr*sh, he lets rendom people talk down on him all the time, and don't get me started on constant need to hide his power Level, and then complain when he Is treated as tr*sh. I really don't know where... more>> author was going with this, but I gave it 3 stars because there Are much worse novels out there <<less

Honestly this book is better than the WMW. It has a more condensed story, less filler, but with a longer pace. Unlike the cold MC of WMW, this fiction has a more moral MC. However, his character does change towards the end of the world after making questionable decisions to advance further along his path towards a 9th tier wizard. A few negatives would be the ending of this fiction as it was rushed and a few characters that were forgotten later on. (I'm talking about his foster daughter in... more>> the Nightmare World after she gets taken away.) Besides mentioning their names a few times, the MC doesn't go out of his way to figure out what happen to them. Other than that, the main selling point of this novel is how I actually have some empathy for this guy. There is a ton of tragedy in his life and shows the hidden consequences of becoming a wizard. Unlike the typical CNs there were a times I teared up. Making this the reason as to why this is superior to WMW. Because unlike WMW, I actually care about this MC on a deeper level and could relate myself when he had to make that final decision which made him into the monster he becomes at the end of the book. Along with the past hardships he had to go through. Overall I think if you enjoy a more slow pace story with a neutral evil MC and tragedy then give this a shot. And at the end of the day I still believe this is the best mage/wizard fic that has been translated. <<less

I tried to read this.

I haven't read the other book that everyone compares this too (And I see from the other comments that this one was written first anyway, so no bias there).

My issues are:
Spoiler
    • The main character is not likable.
    • Supposedly this is about wizards and magic, but the main character seems to want to instead be a swordsman and assassin.
    • The main character has zero value on human life, it's understandable if you have some specific personal motivation to go and kill people (in novels at least) but he actively pursues 'assassination' so he can go out and mu*der people. (Yes I know he does it for the power up, but he gets the power up from magical beasts too, even if it takes slightly more of them, but it's too much of a hassle for him to travel to where the beasts are so he just mu*ders humans instead....)
    • Motivation.... the author pretends like the character has motivations to do this or that... but in the end it comes out to the main character just drifting along like a leaf in the wind.... he doesn't really actively pursue anything (at least not as of chapter 304) he just sort of has these opportunities land in his lap.... so he's very lazy in that regard.
At first yeah he's all about protecting his 'family' which he barely met (including his brutal father), but I can see that given that he was in a strange world and would have been alone otherwise... so Stockholm Syndrome perhaps.
    • Never tries to figure out how to get 'home' (I guess he likes being a sociopath and doesn't want to go back)
    • Specifically goes to these places to try to get spells, resources, and 'meditation techniques', but instead he just does potions and doesn't try to get the 'meditation techniques' (instead they get handed to him for being more evil).
[collapse]

Honestly, at least as of c304 I wouldn't call him a Hero....I definitely wouldn't call him an Anti-Hero...... he is actually one of the villains.

I don't see the point of continuing it further (I regret wasting the amount of time I did spend on reading that far, but I kept hoping it would start going somewhere....).

The ONLY

2 things I really liked about it was:
Spoiler
  • that he didn't actively go out and do the face slapping thing.
  • didn't go all homophobic about the same-s*x relationships (lesbian couple)

Decent novel overall but went very downhill after the nightmare realm invaded the wizard world & Angele decided to leave the central continent imo. Even though the author says it's the complete story of his, I can't help but feel that ever since then everything started to feel very rushed. A major gripe with this story is that Angele ends up being old & alone, without any strong characters (friends/family/romances) to accompany him along his journey, so it does become rather stale after a while in regards to character interactions... more>> go (also not a fan of leaving everyone behind & essentially forgetting about past characters & plot lines). The one stand out thing about this novel is the way that the Ghost encounters are portrayed, as these genuinely had me very creeped out, yet had me craving for more of such situations to occur lol. <<less

I first read WMW then WW, but I have to say this novel is crap.

MC of WMW is evil, cunning, manipulating, and his every action is carefully planned and prepared. He is very intelligent in a way he stragizes his every plan. It just shows about how author carefully revealed plot and his writing skills.

Although MC in WW is intelligent, basically there is no comparision between them. His character is somewhat inconsistent. Sometimes he feels h**ny, sometimes he treats women coldly. Sometimes he feels alone, sometimes he wants to meet... more>> his friends.

The power system is not as good as WMW. In this ranks are basically directly related to mental power. In WMW almost each rank is unique.

Overall although world setting is okay MC totally brings down novel. There are so many awkward moments where his plans fail and he tries to salvage what he can. Its pathetic. Some people may say they like "originality" in it but he just looks s*upid to me. <<less

Good start, but terrible pacing/leveling system once you reach chapter 200 or so. It's fairly obvious that the author hasn't really thought out how the wizard leveling system should work and is just trying to wing it - fairly unsuccessfully.

Oh well, not what I expected. But here we go.

The first thing to take noted is that this novel came out before WMW, and although they have some similarity (AI Chip, first (second) arc.), the novel had quickly gone separated way after the arc.

The novel prologue arc (Before he became a wizard) is pretty boring, but if you can endure that, you would get a really interesting story.

The story is not like WMW at all, it was closer to horror fantasy novel than your usual action fantasy novel.

Pocahontas and Ghandi both have Indians but they’re not the same story... terminator and back to the future are both about time travelers, but are not the same story. Yeah, there’s a chip, but this and WMW are not the same story.

It’s a good story but it is a stark, lonely, solitary world the author built here. Journey from weak and desperate to survive to stronger than Jesus story. Interactions with others are short and rather incidental, lot of writing about researching and time in a lab and such,... more>> increasing the air of loneliness and isolation even further... that feeling actually makes the whole story very depressing. However, the explorations, adventures, events are all strange and gripping, way more interesting than in WMW. This is actually closer to Age of Adepts than it is to WMW, but Age of Adepts has more long term character relationship and isn’t so heavy. <<less

  • This novel was completed 2 years before the start of WMW so I think we all know now who copied who.
  • So is it the same banana as WMW? Yes and No. Yes that they almost have very similar worlds/powers/ranks. The NO part makes me like this story more then the one in WMW.
    • The devil is in the details. The author has a certain flare in writing. It feels like that the MC is not the center of the Universe. The author would add small snippets of some random character or just a passerby that would add another layer to the story.
    • The MC is not super OP like WMW. The writer would take into account his Mana and he would just have a number of actual spells that he can use. Unlike WMW, just because he is a Warlock he can just be gungho and be RAMBO all the time. The AI would post how much Mana left and its not full most of the time, unlike WMW which always seems to be at max capactiy all the time.
    • He is NOT a super genius. The MC is just average joe with an AI which helps him store and create computations. Just like you and me with a super computer. The AI can't do everything.
    • He cannot solve or win or get lucky all the time.
    • Wizard World is a different beast altogether when the MC encounters ghost and the nightmare realm. The Ghosts and Nightmare realm is actually scary.

This story is straight up tr*sh, most of its good reviews are people hating on WMW. And some reviews even straight put points on why WMW is bad instead of giving an why have you given an 5 star review, what is in the novel that makes it good. Let's talk about the whole coping thing, in my opinion it doesn't really matter because what WMW used just an trope in general or an idea which was ai chip and beyond that two stories are very different form one another.... more>> There was this this interview of G. R. R Martin I remember he said something like everyone have brilliant idea but aren't worth sh*t if can't deliver them properly, might not like this something similar. But point is that this novel didn't deliver, not matter what you say there many plot hole form the start while plot armour very apparent everywhere in general the thing is an mess.

And when you compare it to WMW, it just makes it worst. Author clearly didn't made the plot outline in the start so plot is all over the place while if you have read the WMW then you will see that after rank 4 (morning star) , the Al chip have minimum role to play in Mc's advancement, there on out he had to rely on his schemes and planning to advance. While I did not read the whole book (the wizard world) but look up wiki that MC used his ai chip to advance to rank 6. It just make story more shallow because without the chip he worthless and before you say WMW is same, it is not as I said before after rank 4 it is pure planning even in that he met many setback to schemes against an god and came on top not with plot armor but with an detailed plan. I still go on irrelevant characters, horrible character development and how the power system makes no sense but I think you get general idea. <<less

Sigh, I feel like this novel would have been a lot more fulfilling if the MC actually cared more about his relationships with others. Like someone else on this review said, his relationships are like rocks on his journey that he eventually leaves behind and moves on. Then he comes back and sees that the rocks became dust and becomes sad. f*ck.. take the damn rocks with you, why you gotta be such a selfish as*hole when your soul came from motherf*cking modern Earth.

Spoiler

All of the MC's friends, families, loves, disciples, and adopted children are dead. Only some descendants from his father's and mother's side remain which he has absolutely no emotional attachment to but only holds some obligatory responsibility by being related to them so he helps them a bit but forgets them afterwards.I really liked his disciples, children, and parents. I wish he gave them the ability to survive somehow. Of course since he wishes to reach the peak (Ancestor realm), they will die sooner or later no matter what cause they will never be able to reach the same heigh of eternal life like the MC. I hoped that after the MC became the Ancestor of Time, his powers would allow him to travel the river or time and bring back those he wants to bring back and grant them eternal life. It might be cheesy but I feel it would be a fulfilling ending. Otherwise, as an MC, I feel like there is no meaning to live forever without someone you care about being beside you. He always said that his purpose for becoming strong is to find and uncover more exciting things in the universe, but thats such a boring ending. In fact, that kind of ending is no ending. Its not even a goal to work towards. Having someone to share your journey with or narrating those exciting this would have been great. Bring those you care about on your journey would be great. Seeking power to save those your care about would be great. But no, he wants to power to become a f*cking universal detective. Sigh, and the dame character power progression was just everywhere. Just when you thought the MC has chosen a power progression path towards being unrivaled, he switches to a new path. Its soooo random its quite annoying. And somehow, at the end of the novel he became the Ancestor of Time, when he barely started touching the concepts of time near the end of the novel. In fact he is more proficient in dimensional power before time. Is it because he absorbed the Ancestor of Infinity's origin? Who knows. Apparently, ones origin power is determined by ones soul and personality or something. Truly unfathomable how he went from swordsmanship to necromancy to metal to wind/fire to illusions to back to fire to eventually bloodline to mixed bloodline to mixed-bloodline & sacred book (discarded modern wizard meditation for true from mediation technique) to mixed bloodline-negative emotions to dimensional power to finally time origin. And what does he do when he eventually gets to Time power? Continues traveling to find some joy in life. Lord of Terror?... no.. It would be the Lord of Terrible. This MC is terrible. Power progressions and MC valuing relationships would have been a great boost to this novel.

Lol, that was a really enjoyable read. The MC truly explore the world unlike others I've read where they always return to one place at each ends of arc, this one always move. He won't stay at one place for too long.

The kind of adventure I need.

The best part of this novel is how the MC always seems to find himself in a situation where he's being chased around by ethereal beings. The author really left the ethereal beings be a mystery in the story. The lack of explanation itself... more>> makes it more mysterious. <<less

It's like Warlock of the Magus World.

If you liked that book, you'll like this one.

Cold-blooded intelligent main characters. Spells and research. Kno love interests, one beautiful and short friendship. A beautiful loyalty to his mother.

Quite a bit of cruel scenes.

It was a fun read and now I feel just as empty as I felt when I finished WMW.

The plot can be draggy sometimes but if you enjoyed WMW, then you'll probably enjoy this too. The story progression is very similar in both novels.

There are some loose ends that the author just forgets about but take it with a grain of salt.

Disclaimer: I was a subscriber to the translators' patreon when it was still authorized by Webnovel

The Wizard World is a book which stands out compaired to the average chinese novel. These traits make it a fine read, but one who will not please everyone.

The story is good, but a bit special. There is no true metaplot linking the different parts of the novel, beside the quest of the protagonist for the power of magic. The plot is driven by the various goals the main character sets for himself or that... more>> are forced upon him by the world. The story overall is like a travel on which the MC is set upon, and while he makes stops on the way, he always ends up on the road again, leaving friends and foes behind, taking advantages of numerous opportunities he finds in his encourters, taking bits and pieces. It makes you sometimes unable to get attached to certain parts of the story, to the point that some of them seem irritating, making you wonder why the author puts a plot like that in this novel (especially in the last quarter of the book, where there is a lack of structure compaired to the rest), but it ends up fitting in the story, abeit in an artificial way. The novel has two very strong points that keep it interesting until the end. First, the style Angele uses to survive, fight and triumph is always coherent. He analyzes, researches, prepairs and acts in a decisive and pragmatic way. There is little to no plot armor in this novel, the MC is able to make it for a reason. Second, the MC is never really safe or invincible, there always are dangers or threats he can't face, which allows the building of moments of Hitchcockian horror spread in all of the book. In fact, until the end, where the protagonist is extremely powerful, he can still be in hazardous situations and has "acquaintances" who are his peers in power. Overall, the story make you feel the protagonist is unique, but he is not the only one to be unique.

The main character, Angele Rio, is pretty well made, really in harmony with the setting. Not a classic hero, he is more of an anti-hero. A scientist at the core, his character is analytical, rational, careful, adaptative and methodical. He is cold, but not needlessly cruel, everything he does has a meaning, to further his scientific/magical studies or to ensure his security or his few close ones. He does not get into emotional relationship easily or goes out of his way to help others out of altruism (even if he makes sure to settle his debts with the ones who help him). A consequence of this is that most of the other characters are quite underdevelopped. Beside his adoption mother, a ghost and his two adopted children, which are correctly fleshed out, all other characters are functionnal, very temporary good or bad acquaintances Angele makes during his wandering, with which he deals in a "logical" way. By the way, there's no romance.

The power system is at the first levels, very detailed, describing magic in a very scientific way, involving a lot of research and experiments. Sadly, partly owing to the fact that the MC takes a non-standart way of increasing his might, the progression becomes increasingly blurry as Angele progresses. While the author keeps giving a few milestones and tries to keep the analytical, pseudo-scientific impression, a lot of it becomes more a matter of storytelling and intuition, with the normal wizard power scale only kept as a reference.

The setting is bit of a mixed bag. On one side it is well described when it comes to the "visuals" and "mood", with inspirations coming from numerous styles like fantasy (not only medieval, but also the classic, with a big Lewis Carroll influence), gothic (I strongly feel Mary Shelley in the darkest part) and even science-fiction from the 50's - 70's period. It tends to give as the world a sort of "surrealist" mood when these elements are brought with Get Lost unique writing (in some scenes, I could see the strangest parts of the universe like painting in the style of Salvador Dali). On the other side, I must say that the setting lack depth. Most parts of the universe get truly detailed, a lot of the strange things and mysteries that are part of it are never explained, much like a cruise on the Mediterranean or Caribbean Sea were you see a lot of destinations, visit some of them but never really take the time to fully explore. It make this universe interresting and beautiful, but also frustrating. It's definitely the weak point of the novel.

The translation is at first of above average quality, but Leo's skill improves as the story moves forward and, while there still are a number of typos and mistranslations toward the end of the book preventing it from reaching the level of excellence, it gets pretty good overall in the later half. I'll read his future works with pleasure.

In conclusion, The Wizard World is a fine novel, but not the best you'll find. If you're looking for a power trip novel, with lots of romance and a protagonist who can force his way through trials by sheer willpower and bravado, pass your way, this book is not for you. It has a fine, goal-driven, intelligent and analytical protagonist and a beautiful yet barebone world which serves as the setting of a good but not excellent story, coherent, but with a distinct lack of structure in the last part of the novel (which makes for a rought ride toward the end) but overall well written. It benefits from a good, ever improving translator, whose few mistakes won't ruin your reading pleasure. As it is fairly short for a Chinese novel, read it when you're looking for a little bit of good originality.

P.S: Thanks to Get Lost for writting this book and to Leo for translating it. <<less

One thing I've learned from reading reviews: Take it with a pinch of salt. The best way to know what a novel can offer is by reading it.

So this novel has been on my ebook library for 10 months and I just started reading it couple of days ago with no expectations whatsoever since I was getting tired of the standard wuxia/xianxia reads colored with "cultivation level" and "giving faces". But no, I was surprised.

The novel was able present a new world to me, and my expectations of how witchcraft... more>> should be presented was fulfilled; it's not a power you get just by swallowing crap you found by luck but a power resulting from research filled with gore and immorality (by human standards). This is also the concept hated by most people who gave a negative feedbacks.

If you read this novel, you must understand that it's new world, don't color it with your sense of morality, and try looking at it objectively.

However, the novel is not without flaws, and I do agree that the description of the MC is too overused in the novel.

Regardless, it's still a good read for me, the pacing is not too fast nor too slow although it seemed the author hastened it in the later chapters.

If you are sick of mainstream CH webnovels like me who has read tons of them, try this one. If you enjoy it, high five; and if not, suck it. <<less

So, this book really becomes boring after 200 or so chapters. Tried to read on several times but in vain. It's a pity as the world setting seems rather interesting but the author didn't plan it right or simply doesn't have much in his pockets.

It seems to me, WMW was written to counter some (many) weak points of this text. And WMW is good at it, excluding non-existent romance in both novels.
