A novel that can be difficult to like early on if your not a patiant person, get through it however and it really starts to shine. The main character gradually but surely improves himself and his personal strength bit by bit. Don't take the review of Jacobpaige too seriously, he reviews 90% of novels badly, apart from the ones in which he has a boner for the Author. He obviously didn't read Overgeared that well if he considers the main character to have no redeeming qualities, as far as... more>> main characters go he has plenty. Also, not sure how he considers blacksmithing for days straight non-stop as "no effort". <<less

This novel started out really annoying (for the first 100+ chapters), then it slowly developed and became much better in terms of story and characters personality. At this point, this novel seems promising and could become one of the best VR novel. But...

How can this novel become one of the best if the author decided to keep the annoying things from the early part of the novel and combined it with new annoying things?

  1. MC personality, he matured to become a better person? No, he just become less ignorant and still annoyingly greedy, petty and cheap. This kind of character didn't deserve to become MC.
  2. Moreover, every side character somehow attracted and become attached to MC. They want to become devoted followers of MC. They want the MC to become their king, their leader. They thought the greedy, petty and cheap MC deserved their loyalty. What a fool side characters.
  3. Up to 300+ chapters, the personality of every side character (2 heroines included) become dull, bland, and narrow minded.
Even if you rarely think too much of every novel you read, keep prepare yourself if you want to start reading this. Because, this novel will absolutely make you feel annoyed. Good luck

Just could not stand the MC for any longer. He is just too much of a greedy person and has no redeeming characteristics even after he gets "better".

Good job on the translation quality though. RT has excellent translations and should drop this for better novels.

I don't get it how is this novel rated so high I didn't had the patience to read more than 50 chapters of this novel I don't know if my mind would've changed if I persevered more

I read something that said there is character growth from ch 90 but I couldn't reach there I was bored I don't really care if the MC didn't win all the time but his character I found it so annoying Always cursing others and himself just because he didn't get a quest WTF he... more>> has a class quest which even the creators of the game is in awe of what more does he need

On a side note any player coming into contact with him gets a high level quests and successfully finishes it as NPC cheats the MC

If you don't mind getting bored in the first few chapters and an annoying MC who can't even refuse a quest this may be good

Try and give it a read maybe you will like it <<less

A lot of people dropped this novel because of the beginning, and how the MC is unbearable and cowardly. I am the complete opposite. In the beginning, at least he had some personality and character. As the novel progresses, he becomes more and more bland and like a mary sue.

Alright, let’s say this “good natured MC” is more preferred. I can get behind that. However, the way he changes is so s*upid. ... more>>
Spoiler

He literally is described as more mature and has more judgment because of his insight skill being high.

[collapse]
He also is surrounded by beautiful women such as : Lady Irene, Jishuaka, Yura, The copier class girl, his sister, sister’s friend, etc. They all sort of like him for absolutely no reason other than plot progression and “romance.” He becomes more generous because he is uhhh... out of debt? I mean, this is the most logical one out of them all, as well. He also becomes handsome and all from gaining... weight? One of his biggest character traits was that he was pretty below average in terms of appearances, but now he’s a confident handsome man who can woo top beauties. He’s also described as more mature and less short tempered, but that is also circumstantial, as he apparently has bipolar disorder, where he is calm one scene, but absolutely mad the next. Also, the one that hit the nail on the head for me was when the author shows character progression with “He became more mature, ” “He became more good natured, ” and “he became more close sith the guild.” Show, don’t tell, man.

He becomes OP, handsome, gets girls, is rich, while 90% of the story is about him progressing levels, getting skills, and crafting items.

But don’t worry! He still takes advantage of people! No, now he’s the typical “evil and greedy” person but eventually pays back what he takes. <<less

Short and sweet, the story is good but the main character is a child who is ridiculously moronic who wants to con everyone. This isn't a protagonist, it's an emotionally stunted infant.

The game is full of implausibility, impracticability and plain s*upidity so you'll need some tolerance going in. It's not as bad as Ark yet with its full pain sensation, but enough to have you questioning how on Earth this generic POS is supposed to ensnare 2 billion players. 120, 000 classes (good luck programming that) ; NPC on NPC (underage) r*pe (I'd love to have been in that meeting) ; secret classes that only a single person in the entire world will play (giant waste of money and resources). That... more>> legendary quest where some schmuck has to stay connected for 50 consecutive hours in an in-game prison and the company execs convene a meeting to make arrangements with the player's government to make sure he doesn't die (I can't even), etc etc. There's other dumb stuff too like saying the game's creator's more influential than the US president, or Mongolians being a nomadic people in 2040, which should give you an idea of the maturity of the writing. Game mechanics pretty much follow Legend of the Moonlight Sculptor; everything kind of feels like an asspull and full of rookie game dev mistakes.

The MC OTOH strangely isn't irking me like I was expecting, he fits the stereotype and is a source of comedy. Much more than say, superhuman autist Weed or Ark, gaming 18 out of 24 hrs in a day yet are somehow also peak national-level martial artists AND have melodramatic sob stories to act as a source of motivation. This MC is more believable, although later developments do feel kinda cringey.

Translation is perfectly readable and very fast. <<less

People will say "you need to read more chapters because it gets better" but as of 20 chapters I still have no reason to read any further. Main character's not likeable and there are no side characters that have shown up in more than one chapter, the VRMMO is bad (just from the start, there's a scene where the main character is unable to log off and stuck in-game and having that happen for any length of time in a VRMMO is criminal), the humor is weak, there's no weight... more>> to anything because it's a game and the main character clearly treats it as a game.

So maybe it gets better later, but you have to make it past watching the main character grind crafting skills endlessly first. Maybe if I'm bored out of my mind someday I'll give it another chance. If you have anything else to do, I recommend giving Overgeared a pass. <<less

This is the first time I write a review so please bear with me :D

I rate this 4* because the MC character developement is so good! The first 5 volume you'll get frustated of the MC because how childish and s*upid he was. Seriously even for me it's like a torture reading the first 5 volume. The only way you enjoy this is by shutting your brain. Haha. Instead I feel joy whenever the MC get f*cked in the first 5 volume. But hold on, it's just the first 5... more>> volume!

After volume 6 onward (around ch 260) the story get better. Or rather the MC get better. He started to matured during his time playing the game. And after vol 10 onwards (aroud ch 500) he became a respectable character. You'll wondering if he was the same character. Haha.

Unfortunately the story get boring around 20th vol. (Ch. 1000th). The story become flat and the MC get plot armor so much that it get repeated in so many chapter. That's the downside of the long ongoing series like this. I don't know if the story getting better after the 30th volume, because it'a started to get intense and interesting again. But I gues the same cliche pattern will appear again. MC got to fight OP enemy, somehow get over it with luck or plot armor.

Despite all those downside I explained before, the overall story is still interesting. The only hurdle you got is the first 5 volume. Just bear with it and you'll get rewarded on the next volume! That's all from me. I hope this review help you guys still wondering if you wanted to read this series because of the low rating. I believe those who give the low rating can't handle the first 5 volume and give up. 🤣 <<less

The novel is fun to read. Nothing heavy or serious, but a lot of epic stuff/battle. Read it if you want some not-so-serious stuff. Despite how others say that Grid is "unlucky", a lot of things go very well for the MC. He's unlucky at the beginning cause he was such a ret*rd that he is unable to use anything he has/can do to the fullest. He becomes very lucky later on. I think he shared that luck with his sister as later on as ... more>>

So, we have Morpheus, a super computer who is able to create a hyper realistic game where you can do almost anything, including enslaving people and committing massacres/genocide. The only thing you can't do are things like sexually harass/r*pe NPCs because the game will prevent you from doing "it" and block out your capacity to feel s*xual stuff (lmao). If you're trying to make sense on how Morpheus is able to do the things it can do (i.e creating and maintaining a hyper realistic world that makes you question the purpose of living in real life) then you might as well stop, since the only explanation is that Morpheus CAN do it because it is a super computer, and that the one who made it is a smart guy. The game is also very unbalanced and its not afraid to say it to the world.
Spoiler

I swear to god, if the author pulls a Praise the Orc meta-interdimensional plot twist, I'm gonna laugh.

[collapse]

Grid's growth... was honestly forced. I DO see how the author TRIED to write it and what he tried to go with, but lets admit it, with how much it tries to remind the readers how much he has changed with stuff like "If it was the old Grid before he would had done Choice A, but because Grid had grown he did Choice B which is better than Choice A", it's like the story is insecure about showing the readers how much he had grown that it has to remind you every few chapters instead of just allowing us to naturally see it without said reminders.

The main-side characters! I guess lets start with the original Overgeared Guild members (i.e the Tzedakah Guild members that Grid took over to his team). They're quite fun to have in the story. A little banter here and there, and they helped with the MC's disposition. But other than that, they all have little presence, with the (ironically) exception of Faker (LOOK AT THE CLEANSE LOOK AT THE MOVES, FAKER, WHAT WAS THAT?!?) the ASSASSIN and Jishuka the archer. And also maybe Pon and Vantner (banter and bald jokes). The author sometimes sometimes remind us of their existence as the Ten Meritorious Retainers by including them in an arc or two, but after that they once again disappear into irrelevancy. Remember Ibellin? Lauel's "rival" who was one of the 10 Rookie Geniuses? Well, he gets forgotten for hundreds of chapters. At least in later arc the story acknowledges how irrelevant they've become and makes them go on a training arc... where they once again become irrelevant. We also have Lauel who joins in the earlier parts of the story. Without Lauel overworking his ass off and sacrificing his time that he should had used on becoming stronger, Grid would have to be stuck in his territory managing shit, so yeah he is secretly the most useful person in the guild. NPC side characters, I'm not gonna discuss cause its gonna take long, but they're more relevant than the original Overgeared Members except for Faker and Jishuka, which is sad.

There's also nationalism in the story, and its the toxic type (god why are CNs and KNs usually obsessed with these). We get Korea great, China bad. Oddly enough, I was expecting it to be more against Japanese (history stuff), but in this story, Japan and Korea becomes quite close in later on... but there's still "Japan bad" vibes lmao, just not as bad as the China one. If the author just dropped or at least TONED DOWN the nationalism, it would had been a smoother and lesser awkward read. At least it got lesser as the Tournament Arcs passes, and that it's not as bad as other similar novels, but that's a low hurdle.
Spoiler

Got to agree with CCP bad though... woops politics got to shut my mouth.

.

6-7/10. Its honestly really fun to read. There's a lot of times where the story will leave you scratching your head, but the novel itself is quite good for wasting time (and its quite HYPED). You don't need to use all of your brain to understand what is happening. IMO, the author is actually quite good at setting up events by giving out subtle hints on how it will go as the main plots move. Quite a lot of wasted potential, etc. Time to go back to Granblue Fantasy. <<less

Very interesting story. 1290 chapters in it's still good. High-powered MC but not Godlike, they do a good job of giving him goals and powerups.

I read a review negatively saying that some of the NPCs are better characters than the human characters. I guess that person somehow didn't realize that that was on purpose? That that's a huge part of the story?

I'm Actually Sad that this novel rating are below 4. Maybe because lot of people who give low ratings to this novel, didn't pass the point where the MC (Grid) grow. This stories MC started as terrible person and slowy change to his better self, but even when his personality change, he isn't always perfect, that's what make MC are more human and loveable. Because of this when MC gets more power he didn't be arrogant f*ck, and f*ck every women he finds attractive, MC still humble and didn't drunk... more>> because of power, like most of MC.

For MC aside, the stories of this novel is Fascinating, and Awesome.

Each and every character have emotions, personality, and goals. They grow up along with MC. Bunch of old character not become irrelevant, instead they grow and have more to offer later on

And the Adventure are superb, there a lot of stuff that make the stories colorfull and amazing, make you wonder this world buildings of this novel are amazing.

Well for you who new to this novel, I hope you persist until chapter 100+, when MC started know that his personality are tr*sh because of some reason (spoiler), and started to change.

Well I assure you, this novel is really amazing.

It's should have rating 4.5+ in this NU, but sadly this novel didn't get what it deserve. <<less

If you like videogames and nonsensical powers then this story is a must read.

This story is a ride. I need to step back to really look at how it all unfolded. Let me tell you this now, they treat the main character like a side character. Before you start assuming he's ignored, that's not what I mean. He starts with a personality and goal, but grows and he changes both those things. That's something normally left out of a main character, because who wants to read from the perspective of... more>> someone cancerous? Most main characters start as someone tolerable or good and end as that same kind of person, barely any growth, but not here. You can see why most stories don't do this when the translator has to explain at the very start that the main character does stop acting childish, I mean I would have dropped it if not for that. But sitting through it and watching him grow is rewarding. <<less

This book is not what I anticipated going in.

I read this book after seeing the vast amount of recommendations and with the forewarning of "the story and character gets better after chapter 100". I steeled myself for a tenuous introduction and bumpy start (which happens as expected!) but frankly speaking, it doesn't get better.

I've read several hundred chapters by this point and I just can't stomach the story. My first gripe is with Grid himself. He goes from being a useless NEET who's wasted years of his life on a... more>> game that has given him no return to a cold unsociable a**hole.

On either side of the spectrum, he's simply unlikable. His personality does technically go under improvement, as many people have pointed out, but it's only to the extent of going from being an actual burden on society and family to being barely tolerable in short doses. Additionally, he has no personality to speak of besides being unlikable and generally standoffish. I cannot name a single redeeming or otherwise notable trait about him besides perhaps "perseverance" (which may be better stated as blindly foolish stubbornness).

Yet, in spite of all this, countless people trip over each other to just try and get a glimpse of this socially inept "messiah". This includes beautiful celebrities, greatly affluent individuals, and a whole slew of other top class people. This is as bewildering as it is frustrating for me to see. Grid is wholly unrelatable and genuinely unlikable.

My second biggest gripe is with the setting that takes up most of the story, the game world itself. It is a system that is so ridiculously arbitrary and unfair I doubt the game could crack 2 digits in concurrent players if it were released in real life, regardless of how "immersive and ground-breaking" it is. It appears the only way anyone can progress in the game is to throw away hundreds if not thousands of hours of their life on end, on a grind that doesn't stop. Only through the power of reality editing known as the author can such a broken system rise to be the most popular game in any timeline.

My final thoughts are that this is a hugely flawed power fantasy of a novel that isn't worth giving a single second of attention to. There is no curb to get pass in order to get to the improved segments of the story because it doesn't improve much at all. Kudos to the translation team to persevering so far, but how the novel itself managed to become so popular is something that may very well remain elusive to me forever. <<less

I am not one to usually write reviews; however, I have seen many reviews that I can't entirely agree with. I want to preface my review first by stating that those I disagree with are entitled to their opinions, just as I am.

Spoilers Below

Before I started reading the web novel, I read the manhwa on some website and questioned whether I wanted to stick with the updates, due to as many people point out in the beginning, Grid's personality. After I found out that there was a web novel, I... more>> decided to give it a try since I liked the concept of the story and saw that there were 1200+ chapters out already at the time. Once I caught up with the updates, I can fully-heartedly state that I love the plot, the character development for Grid, and the numerous other characters. Additionally, the world-building is fantastic, among many other points that I love. I can fully understand people's annoyance with Grid's character at the beginning of the novel, as well as later in the story. I do, however, disagree with the notion as some people have stated that Grid happens to get OP magically. According to Satisfy's developer, Grid's class, Pagma's Descendant, is one of the weakest legendary classes in terms of combat power. As the story starts to pick up and we can see Grid reaching new heights, he is definitely a strong character, but nowhere near what people have claimed to be the strongest character in the game. Even in chapter 1300, Grid is arguably the strongest solo character, but just as he is growing, so are his guildmates, his friends, and his enemies. I also must point out that Grid's growth is because of his tenacity and his drive. This idea is developed as the novel progresses, and I also observed that his relationships are a significant factor in his development as a character, as well as a power in the game. Even Satisfy's direction points out how Grid's interaction with the NPCs is something, unlike any other player. This is the main point in the novel that I believe is why Grid can be considered the strongest character. Again, Grid frequently develops in the story and grows stronger through the creation of his items, his allies, his experiences, and the growth of his control. The most significant advantage over others and the greatest reason for his strength are his relationships.

Grid's personality is derived from his life experiences, which were pretty difficult by my standards. His trials and tribulations throughout his life are what shaped the character that we read about at the beginning of the story. The way he interacts with people is from countless experiences he had growing up, and I believe, can be considered a defense mechanism that he believes will prevent himself from getting hurt. You can call it whatever you want, but his personality can be attributed to his personal experiences. This leads me to my next point that people have pointed out: how all the girls are madly in love with him. I do not necessarily consider this to be accurate, as both Yura and Jishuka have stated that they only found Grid interesting at first. It is through the development of his character that both of them start to develop a romantic interest in Grid, with Yura openly stating that she wants to date him later in the novel. At that point, Grid questions her intentions because he still believes that he is ugly, selfish, has a lousy personality, etc. Her answer is what truly encompasses his growth, as she states everything she likes about him. Although at that point in the novel, Grid has grown by leaps and bounds from his initial representation, we can still observe how the flaws deep in his heart are still present. The idea that people wrote about his personality doing a complete 180 is just false. Grid's development is something that has been steady throughout the novel and is still continuing in chapter 1300. He may never let go of some of the flaws he has because he is human, but he is continuously analyzing himself and trying to improve.

Another significant criticism I have witnessed is the idea that the novel has a large amount of nationalism. I have read through the novel from chapter 1 to chapter 1300 twice, and I can say that while it is there, it by no means takes away from the reading experience. A big event in the story is the national competitions that feature numerous countries worldwide that compete in various events. Grid participates in these competitions for selfish reasons at first but eventually competes for others. I do not get the idea that the story represents or over glorifies South Korea. The main character is from South Korea, so of course, there are going to be numerous mentions of aspects of South Korea. Grid, as a character, however, is far from someone who promotes everything there is to know about South Korea. Yes, some characters overtly preach about their love for South Korea, such as Peak Sword, but some characters do not, such as Eat Spicy Jokbal. Overgeared Guild is a multi-national guild that both Grid and Lauel emphasized was not about where people are from, but instead, about their love for Satisfy. If this small aspect of the story sticks out to you, you miss the bigger picture of the novel. I have also seen people mention the mandatory military service and whatnot. I will again state that this event in Grid's life significantly impacted his development, especially when it comes to his drive and tenacity.

Overall, this may be a long review, but I wanted to address some observations that other people made that I felt were premature or, at times, inaccurate. Again, this whole post is my opinion, and you can choose to disagree with it if you feel inclined. You may call me a fanboy, and my response is, yes. I have enjoyed reading the novel much more than I thought I would. I went into reading the story with the idea that Grid would be an annoying character that I could not stand, and would therefore give up halfway through. The story blew this expectation away, and I can even go back to the beginning of the story and have laughs at areas I found annoying. I read this novel with little expectations and have developed into a fan who cannot wait for new updates. For me, I may enjoy the novel so much because I can resonate with Grid on a personal level; however, I believe that anyone can enjoy it just as much as me. Anyway, I hope you can find the certain charm this novel offers that I have observed and are able to find novels you enjoy if this one is not for you. <<less

I could explain why some of reviews are wrong... But it would be too long and it would trigger everyone...

But I just want to note, that if you are:

    • Like to prejudge
    • Can't observe and see reason behind anything
    • Or just arrogant and believe that your opinion have value.
Have some advice: don't waste your time, Likely you wouldn't get it or get it wrong.

After reading the reviews, and having a go at this novel, I will agree that the MC is not the most likeable person. However, if you take a few steps back and focus on the side characters, you would notice that the vast majority of them are also rather crude towards the MC.

I'm not trying to defend the MC for being a selfish, impulsive, and greedy NEET. I feel like he is a horrible person as a result of being a victim of mock and ridicule. It's almost as if... more>> he is in a pit of quicksand: his family always doubt him, strangers think he's suspicious or downright ugly, and worst of all, he's in limbo with being at the wrong place at the wrong time. That last bit may not seem compelling, but you have to remember that the MC is constantly under stress; meaning his mind, body, spirit AND environment are constantly filled with negativity. That being said, I feel like this is not a conventional character growth story. This is definitely not an underdog becoming the greatest. Instead, this is the story of a street rat becoming the top billionaire. <<less

2 stars since I did enjoy parts of it

Webtoon caught my interest, so I decided to give this a try (since everyone was talking about Grid's development)

and honestly it's garbage. Sure he does get better, until he reverts right back to his petty selfish ways. I don't like perfect characters at all, but Grid is such as piece of garbage that even his improved self pisses me off. The author did a good job building up the side characters and making them unique and interesting, and then at one... more>> point they just exist to show the power difference between Grid and "top rankers". Every side character around him seems to exist for the sake of sucking his d*ck for just to guzzle down a load of "overgeared" equipment that hardly gets mentioned. Jishuka and Yura were great female characters, both strong willed and aiming for the top spot, until they start acting like personal on**oles for Grid. "OMG no man has ever eluded my absolute beauty and talked to me in such a rude manner, f*ck ME!!" for all the exposition about Grid's absolute shittyness, it's frustrating to see the formerly strong characters getting on their knees everytime Grid is mentioned. Also f*ck off with the annoying Korean nationalism, I'm Korean born and raised and I hate everytime the author goes on about the greatness of Korea and evil of foreign countries. Props to all the Americans who could deal with that shit.

Don't get me wrong, no way I could read 400+ chapters of something I hate. Overgeared does have it's moments, but it's like the ratio of real life and Satisfy. For every line of hype, there's 2-3 lines of absolute tr*sh stuffed in. It's not even wish/fantasy fulfillment because one can't possibly see themselves as selfish/ret*rded/egotistical/dense/childish as Grid. Sorry, reading this might have given me an extra chromosome. <<less
