A fun story, the MC isn’t super intelligent, but he’s also not a complete dipshit. If I had a complaint, it would be him not trying to learn either the local power system or properly mastering his own powers. Like figuring out how to use the basic energies. Holy power, magic, and mana swordsmanship; if he properly learned how to control any of them he wouldn’t have the issues of collateral damage...

Classic isekai story with the classics fantasy tropes, s*upid guy surrounded by girls that take initiative and a mascot. If you want another fantasy isekai to kill boredom this is good enough. But otherwise is not good quality material as it has too many cons.

Cons: author is too repetitive on summarizing the characters or situations to make the LN longer, no effort to make the isekai reason a mystery, MC has no direction or goal, the skeleton appearance serve no purpose or impact whatsoever, it seems is just there to... more>> win over Overlord fans. <<less

First off, the translation. In my opinion, I thought it was pretty well done 4/5 because it's not the best I've seen but good none the less.

Next is the MC. 2 words, Incredibly Passive. The first few chapters show you exactly how he would act if not for his companions he gains. Essentially he would be the definition of a wandering mercenary. Making enough money to live and just spending his days enjoying himself and maybe traveling. He isn't blinded by greed (although he does like money). He isn't some... more>> hero (although he doesn't refuse to help, especially women and children). He doesn't want power or fame hell he isn't even that interested in getting his flesh and blood body back. He considers the skeleton body inconvenient and treats the problem like it just can't be helped. That's not to say he doesn't try to get his body back but it's not his life goal or anything just something to work on if he has the time or is bored. Some people like this type of character, some don't that's fine thankfully his companions and his random acts of kindness and meddling manage to keep the MC in interesting situations. Another thing is that although he doesn't try to start things when he does end up in a situation he sometimes goes above and beyond by doing unnecessary things reminding us how strong he is. As for his strength, it's interesting because he is not the strongest. Although he is very strong definitely near the top of the strong in that world there are stronger and obviously, he isn't very skilled so he brute forces most things. (Although he strives to fix that.) This means that although he wouldn't lose per se very skilled individuals could escape him or end up with a draw and when a skilled and strong opponent shows up it's more than possible for him to lose.

The world-building is good IMO. The author tends to repeat himself to recap places and people so it might seem like your reading the same thing multiple times. This is helpful at times and annoying at times. The pacing is a bit slow in some volumes and in others it's great.

My word of advice is to stick with it if you more than a volume in. I admit I also dropped this story around volume 2 or 3 but I picked it up again and thoroughly enjoyed the next volumes. The only reason I'm giving this 4/5 instead of 5/5 is that I did drop it even if only for a little bit, but if you enjoyed the beginning even slightly then try to stick with it. I promise you it gets more interesting. <<less

A little bit disappointing in the end, but nonetheless a decent one.

What's good:

  1. Decent world building.
  2. Logical decisions by the MC and others.
  3. Hints buried in multiple places in the first half of the story, which really interest me as I wanna know how they are put together and reveal the main incident.
What's bad:

  1. Rushed ending, so rushed that it feels like an anticlimax.
  2. Weak character building.
  3. Many of the hints buries in the first half of the story in the end did not serve anything; they're wasted.
I was expecting a grand story after reading all... more>> those hints here and there, but.... there is none. The daughter of an important noble family rescued in the very first chapter, the power struggle over the throne in Kingdom, the story with the 2 remaining villains, and the story behind MC's true identity, all ended abruptly along with the final boss's defeat.

It is really a pity; the story could've been great if the author could connect all those dots together and present us with a rather complex incident. But, in the end, the author just gives us a lot of really good pieces, and yet fails to build a good story on top of them. <<less

im still trying to understand what the autor wanted to do with this novel, it seemed to me like he was just writing at random, but since it was somewhat ok the whole novel I guess thats also fine.

btw I got pissed because it had the romance tag, and at most its only worth a romantic subplot tag, I changed the tags so it should be fine, but if someone change it back ill leave my warning here.

I find it hard to decide how to rate stuff sometimes, should one do it at volume one if one had the best impression then or at vol 5 when one has started to lose interest?

In this case I am all to aware that I picked this one up cause I adore Overlord. It was also fairly easy to see in my opinion that the author is trying to ride on Overlords popularity while trying to stay original to some degree.

The problem here however and one of the reasons I... more>> like Overlord is that the MC's in JP novels most of the time are very beta, as in they follow and do whatever people around them tell them to do and lack any real thought or decisions of their own. Ainz is the very definition of a beta but while he is one he almost never acts like one because of his need or at least illusion that he must act like an Overlord.

Arc however is the very sterotype of a beta and after only a few chapters into the story is so p*ssywhiped without getting any p*ssy thats it's a wonder why he isn't simply wearing a s*ave tag or something.

Example

Spoiler

Early on he get's the mission to save a bunch of s*aves comissioned by waifu N1, the reward is something like 50 gold, he saves them and then also robs a treasury worth 50 000+ gold but gives it all to the waifu + s*aves. Which is fine since he's a good guy, but then a bit later at their village he borrows their bath and get's complained at for wasting 10 gold to bathe. Then he accepts it and a bit unsure but I believe he is even forced to repay the 10 gold. Even though he just saved them and earned them 5 000 times as much gold cause he's such a pushover.

[collapse]

It also doesn't help much that the story tries waaay to hard to be funny, don't get me wrong some parts are hillarious. But there is a bit to much of it

There is also an sorely missing plot in my book, while looking for a way to return into a living form is okey it feels more of a side thing and every volume I've read so far seems to lack a direction. To put it in words the feeling I get is something like. "Stay tuned for in the next volume plot will be revealed and you will know what this story is all about" this is the underlying feeling I've gotten in the 5 volumes I've read. So when will that question be answered?

Also author please we all know the N1 waifu chest is big and MC keeps staring at them so can you please stop mentioning them every 1-2 chapters it's not like were senile or anything. <<less

A miss or hit novel you'll unusually find. Either you'll drop it or like it. Has a fairly good narrative foundation and fleshed-out characters (except for the MC :l)... Read the synopsis and read other reviews but long story short this is Overlord in the premise but flipped inside-out.

> OP MC that is skeleton outside but something else inside
> NO OP NPCs, sadly
> MC has more humanely thoughts than other similar MC (I mean stealing stolen goods. xD)
> The story has no overall goal... more>> and is composed of small Arcs (pun intended.. haha MCs name is Arc)
> Hence the plot is not contained but is loose, though that justifies the adventurer-type the MC is.

Overall this is either a pop or flop novel in your tastes.
For my personal enjoyment its fairly good, but what made it 5 / 5 is that, Ponta is the real MC and why I keep reading this... haha ~kyun~

Wait... The MC is OP but just in brute force.... I mean in pure practical swordskills he's fairly a novice. Which I found amusing since it subverts some OP MC tropes and is able to introduce characters that can dominate him in pure skills. <<less

Pretty interesting isekai novel. It does a lot of the usual tropes, but also subverts quite a few. Like the MC being OP solves most problems, but he's also shown to be unskilled because he relies on brute power, and easily bested in swordsmanship/sparring. Supporting characters are all pretty good and well developed. The heroine of the story has gotten duller as the story has progressed, slowly falling into the trap of being mostly defined by being a bit tsundere and getting embarrassed while trying to come off as tough... more>> more often than not.

I keep coming back to it. They do the OP MC trope really well and it's always fun when new people realize how crazy strong the MC is, both in small ways (like being able to lift a heavy door), to the insane (single-handedly wiping out most of an army). <<less

I had high expectation at the start but I dropped it afterwards first the author neglected the initial personality like how was he in real life does he wants to return to his family or ha no one so just stay here. The second mistake is revealing to others that he is an undead which really angered me I also hated how he is trying to use fan service by any mean which tr*sh the story all of that made dropped it.

I find the negative reviews a bit over the top. The novel and characters are entering an entirely new world in the Eastern and eventually Western Revlon Empires. A lot of foundation building is going on with I suspect big reveals and crises in East and then the ambitions of the west ultimatelynplacing the southern countries at high risk. We have hints regarding missing Dragon, Cloisters exploiting elves, and I suspect threats to Rhoden and Canada. Recall one of Canada’s strengths is the monsters but if the West exploits their... more>> mana tool this defense may be weakened. There are also hints regarding the explosive growth of the new Mountain People country.

All these hints mean at least one or even two major story arcs are about to emerge. Finally, the resolution of Arc’s body as well as (hinted from manga) the Southern Continent Black Forest getting involved.

I am excited by all the possibilities in future volumes. Some patience is needed as the foundations are laid. The true Hilk challenge was not revealed until volumes 5-8 so volumes 9-10 and I suspect 11-13 will be opening new and fun story arcs.

This remains one of my favorite light novels and it’s main characters are fun and get me engaged. <<less

It's easy to understand that this is written by an amateur novelist but that help put some of the pros and cons into perspective. It's a fun read but you can see where the writer lost his way here and there. Like most novels on here that have a lot of chapters you can tell when an author starts their writing without knowing how it's going to end. The story will just meander around. This story really feels like I am not getting close to any real goal.

It is an... more>> ok way to pastime but I would not actively promote this to my friends. To anybody looking here to see if it's worth reading I would say sure but only if you don't mind a average story that progresses a little on the slow side. Read the first 2 ~ 4 chapters, if that hasn't hooked you move on. <<less

I had a high expectation on this LN, but became a bit disappointed afterwards.
While the story is a bit interesting indeed, the plot is too shallow.

There's also so many cliff hanger at the end of each volume, moreover the ending was not that great. Maybe this is the reason why there's more volume on LN series than WN series.

Anyway, if you ever read Overlord, let's assume Overlord's score is 8, this LN score is only 3 or maybe 4 at most compared to that Overlord LN.

At first glance, this seems derivative (Overlord being the obvious culprit) but it's basically an isekai setting. What sets it apart is how well executed the plot is.

It has an excellent way to deal with an obviously OP MC; with great power comes a hell lot of responsibility and even if you ignore the responsibilities, the side effects can be crippling. Not to mention, the political ramifications, cultural impact of something beyond comprehension can have on the locals, etc.

And his companions are not the MC cheerleaders, if anything, they act... more>> very similar to Doctor Who's companions; they are not his yes men, they are his advisers/supervisors, his cultural liaisons, his occasional reality checks, and most importantly his moral compass.

The story even gives a very plausible/believable reason on why the MC doesn't react to things similar to how a regular person would (again I point to Doctor Who). Even given that, the MC isn't an arrogant disrespecting edgelord playing out his revenge fantasy and lording over others with unearned cheat skills.

That's not to say he doesn't use his cheat skills. Boy does he! When he does it counts, its not to show off, it makes a difference.

Well worth reading, a great pulpy adventure romp with consequences and fantastic world building. <<less

This is where Ainz have taken the route as an Adventurer Knight instead of being a Guildmaster ?

Well not exactly as says in the summary but who knew just dozing off Truck-kun ? In his spectral form would take your soul and carried it to another world with a new body that is taken from the game the main character played.

In the world he transmigrated he gonna learn the consequences of choosing the wrong skin avatar he has chosen. If seen public no more easy life for him so thats... more>> why even in sleeping in Inns and outside, wearing the armor is the only thing covering up his bony body. For some weird circumstance he can eat and sleep in his skeletal form and he always wonder where the food goes as he think it end up in a strange pocket dimension in his nonexistent stomach.

Find his adventure to his cruising between an easy or the odd thing to do. No, he's not alone. His journey with a Magical Beast Squirrel, a beautiful oppai Dark Elf and a Shinobi Ninja Nekomini-loli.

This is surely a ride for your imagination! <<less

Entertaining story, well translated, regular installments of new chapters, also manga has just came out.

Main premise is a regular Japanese man is s**ked into another world seemingly based around the game he had been playing & when he awakes in that world he is in the 'form' of his game avatar which had a skeleton skin applied to it. This is hidden at first because he is wearing full coverage armor. He also comes with all his avatar's abilities so is over powered compared to others in that world. No... more>> other game players at this point seem to be in the world. In this world the Elves & Beast Men are seen as below humans; are treated as sub human & often kept as s*aves, the MC ends up making friends with them & they work together for their mutual benefit.

First & foremost to those interested in reading this story, this isn't like the story Overlord. The only thing in common with Overlord is the MC is over powered & the skeleton appearance, it ends there. If you are looking for an Overlord like story this isn't it.

That said, it is a good story. This story is more light heartening. The MC comes across as kind of an air head at times, he's still trying to figure out his powers & wrap his mind around he is in another world with different common sense then he is use to. Sometimes especially at first he tries to apply 'game logic' to his situation. He often over does it with his powers because of getting in situations he figures let's try this skill & ends up getting scolded by his companions for crazy abilities that no one should have, the fight & action scenes are also decently done.

The MC is doing things to help those he comes across in trouble, trying to find a way to return home, remove his 'skeleton skin' so he can have a more normal life in that world, & finding his place in the world he has found himself in.

If you are looking for over the top drama, action packed, fast paced romance, mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat, an MC taking charge type of story then no, this isn't that type of story.

If you are looking for something funny, with a good story, friendship building with hints of possible romance to come, some action & decent fight scenes, a little bit of drama & mystery that is building throughout the story, then I don't think you'd be sorry to take the time to read this story. It really is a nice story to read. I've read to the current vol 7 ch 9 as of Oct 2017, & I can't wait until the next installment because it really is getting more involved in the mystery that was presented at the beginning of the story & has built up over all these volumes.

Spoiler

*spoiler* (Elves & Beast Men have the ability to tell that he isn't a true undead creature but, just has the appearance of a skeleton, hence why he is able to make friends with them without having to always hide his 'cursed' appearance & why it is decided by them he is cursed. The ability of these races to tell if someone is actually undead or not is revealed in the story & plays a part as the story goes on. Later in the story they find a temporary way (very short periods of time) to remove the 'curse' only for him to change into the appearance of his original avatar from the game he was playing that this world seems based on instead of his regular Japanese appearance). *End spoiler*

I really like this novel. It does have a tendency to be a little slow from time to time, but that also allows for a deeper worldbuilding to take place and lets us get to know the characters more.

One thing worth mentioning; there is a manga coming out of this. It still is only a few chapters long, but we do get to see Chiome and (this is not really a spoiler since it has nothing to do with the story) that is where I got a bit of a... more>> shock. I thought Chiome had a cat-like, smooth, shorthaired tail. But in reality it's bushy and looks more like a wolf's tail. That shocked me. Nice angle when we got to see the tail though (I didn't think ninja clothing were so tight) <<less

Fantastic! This is easily among my favorite web/lightnovels. Arc is a very likeable character and his companions are also fun.

My only minor gripes with the series have been mostly addressed at the point I'm currently at.

I greatly look forward to more. I want to see how things play out and what the different factions do as things continue.

... more>> Also, the translation has been among the better ones I've seen. It's not without errors here and there but I've actually been impressed by how thoughtful the translator has been at certain points.

I totally recommend this.

Ok. Sorry for my broken english.

If you like isekai story with OP MC, maybe you will like this story. If not, dont try it.

TBH, I agree with some people here that said this story became "meh" and "boring", but I truly LoL'ed to people said about skleton thing.

... more>> AFAIK, dont compare this story to overlord.

MC Overlord race in the story is lich (or right now highest version of lich). So what trait lich have? You can read it in overlord, like not eat not sleep.

This story, the MC race is not a lich. His skleton form is only an avatar. You know, if you play MMO, you can buy avatar (skin) from item mall for your character.

So of course he needs to eat, he can feel h**ny, he needs to sleep, and etc. Because the skeleton thing only avatar or skin, not his race.

All in all, if you hardcore OP isekai story fana, you will like this story. <<less

I was thinking, oh is it another Overlord again? But it is not. It is more like The New Gate. And he is also overpowered, simply overpowered. But there are lots of contents in this novel. There is adventure and he is using his abilities and skills and not just sit around building hot springs and slice of life. Things are happening, there is a story. I enjoy reading this novel. Edit: Lots of entertainment. There is a good flow. I changed to 4 star. There is 2 plots in... more>> the story. From what I can understand. He is actually using spells and skills and not simply just overpower their enemies with dull and simple dumb skills. Though the teleportation and warping is getting a bit ridiculous.

Edit: It is kind of sad reading the newer reviewers saying this a harem when it is not a harem novel so far and he is not a lich either. It just sad when people review and write bullsh*t when they obviously not read this novel at all and just want to tr*sh talk. Just scroll up and read august reviews if you know what I mean. People should read the novel first before writing. He is not a lich. He is cursed or system malfunctioning because the skeleton skin is a cosmetic skin he bought before he was transfered inside the game, his original starting character were dark elf. And there only been 1 heroine while chiome is more of a side character, there is no harem! (Yet, since this novel is far from over and we dont know chiome route yet). But no harem tag yet! <<less

At first it was good but the protagonist with his lack of development caused it to decline.
He is clueless, his actions are to follow what they ask of him and eat and as for his power, this OP but he does not know how to move, he does not use his abilities which they mention randomly.
If this bothers you then I don't recommend it.
