Many islands dotted the vast oceans of this world. However, some of the islands were a lot more sinister than the rest. Those islands, known as Nightmare Islands, were true nightmares to all but the strongest and most fortunate. Children were kidnapped and thrown on these isolated islands by the Nightmare Palace, forced to sign soul pacts with evil soul pets: Nightmares. These devils slowly devoured the souls of their trainers to grow stronger. If the children did not cultivate fast enough, their souls will be devoured whole, leaving only an empty husk behind.

Chu Mu, the protagonist, was an heir to the Chu Clan, but due to a plotted mu*der, he was thrown on the island, sentencing him to almost certain death. Dancing on the edge of life and death, he struggled to survive with a small Moonlight Fox he captured. When he finally escaped the devilish foremen on his island, he couldn’t help but let a breath out. But little does he know, the experience was only a beginning to a fated journey with his little Moonlight Fox…

The Charm of Soul Pets (TCOSP) is the story of Chu Mu and his quest to gather his ideal group of soul pets in order to become the best soul pet master in the world. Overall, this novel is a 3.5/5, but unlike most novels, it ended in an interesting and acceptable manner (albeit with many questions unanswered). The main drawback of the story is the inconsistency - the plot holes are numerous, ambiguity of names and plot explanations is rampant, and character decisions are oftentimes hypocritical and illogical. Below,... more>> I'll give a bit of a summary of the story with comments, followed by pros and cons, and an overall thought.

Spoiler

The story starts off with Chu Mu being weak and under pressure to find his first real soul pet. He soon discovers a small fox that is capable of continuous race mutations, making it stronger by an entire class each time. With this small fox, which he names Mo Xie, he progresses through the story in a very Xianxia-like fashion: he has troubles, finds lucky chances, spends lots of time training, finds some love interests, gains allies, fights in tournaments, and ends up becoming one of the strongest existences in the universe.

The actual soul pet aspect of the story is pretty fun; it's basically like Pokemon for an audience that likes grittier, more violent stories with actual consequences. The premise and development of the world is a great strength for the story, because it's unique. The variety of soul pets is fairly big, the soul pets have many abilities and learn new ones throughout the story, and they can even pseudo-evolve into stronger versions of their race. There are different types of soul pets, and they grow in different ways, at different rates, and using different items.

The supporting characters are also not left behind; for most of the story, we have supporting characters that are at similar power levels as Chu Mu, or have special powers which keep them relevant. The characters are dynamic, especially Chu Mu, and there are side stories for many of the supporting cast, some of which get resolved along the way. The love interests and family relations in the story are intermittent but well-developed, and they make it a very Xianxia-esque read.

The strengths of TCOSP, however, don't hide the problems. At several points in the novel, events that happened previously are either completely ignored, or retroactively waved away. Many times, the wrong names are used for people, or events are recounted differently, and there's no way to explain it away, other than by calling it a plot hole. Sometimes, new explanations or problems are given, but are then swept away with a few sentences, or are completely irrelevant and end up wasting space on page.

The leveling/power system is not well-defined, and the faction system is actually one of the most confusing hierarchies I've ever seen. The main character always finds a way to level up his soul pets, even if he needs items that are considered rarer than the rarest things the world has ever seen. This is not to say that the main character doesn't suffer losses, but the overall gains are almost always higher than the losses, even in situations where they have no right to be. The main character is also extremely hypocritical with his decisions, and sometimes makes plain illogical decisions, that somehow work out.

The ending is a mixed bag: it's actually a very apt and original ending, but it also invalidates basically everything that happened in the story. While I did enjoy the last chapter, and feel that the ending was a strength in itself, the 200 or so chapter leading up to it were confusing, rushed, and average at best. In fact, the beginning hooked me and the ending left me content, but the in-between chapters varied in quality, as did the story arcs themselves.

[collapse]

Pros:

  • The story is unique: it's a mix of a Pokemon setting and a dynamic protagonist with a Xianxia-style ideology.
  • The world is expansive and has a lot of mystery and intrigue within it.
  • The soul pets and the combat are varied; it's not entirely a reliance on one main move or one soul pet.
  • The supporting cast has a multitude of personalities, and they are relevant throughout the story. Chu Mu isn't always completely ahead of his peers, and is in fact the underdog for a lot of it, but uses tactics to win.
  • The family matters, love interests, and special relationships are deep and actually have history and build-up behind them.
Cons:

  • Besides the first couple of hundred chapters, a few random moments in between, and the last chapter, the plot is very average. In fact, it gets quite confusing at times, and makes the novel an arduous read.
  • The leveling system never stops being confusing, and there are too many things to keep track of (element type, primary/secondary attributes, race rank, phase, level, strong moves, weak moves, casting time, etc). It makes it hard to actually quantify how strong a soul pet is, which has its benefits, but also makes the power system pointless.
  • The faction system and the hierarchy within the factions, along with the naming (Soul Hall/Soul Palace, Soul Pet Palace, Soul Union; Profound Gate/Mysterious Immortal Gate) makes it hard to follow who's who.
  • The plot holes and inconsistencies are plentiful and can't be overlooked. Certain events are simply changed retroactively, and wrong names have been used lots of times, even though the names are very different (Qingzi vs. Wansheng, for example).
  • The ending of the novel nullifies the entire novel. While I think the very end has merit, it might leave others annoyed at how things ended. In fact, I do think that the few hundred chapters before the end were already spiraling downwards with very rushed plots, confusing explanations, and unbelievably quick power growth.
    Spoiler

Because time was reversed, nothing in the story mattered. Even before then, Chu Mu let all his soul pets go, and they were basically useless for the final fight. For most of the story, he was trying to juggle every one of them, and yet at the end, only Mo Xie mattered.

    [collapse]
  • Lots of questions were unanswered in the end, and lots of plot lines that were raised throughout the story were never resolved.
Overall, I think the premise and the uniqueness of this story makes it a decent read. If you're looking for something that's original and is fairly long, then I would recommend you check TCOSP out. <<less

Personally, I feel like the social interaction between the MC and the world just feels stiff and unnatural.

When it comes to authority, those of lower standing are able to leverage and abuse their power much more effectively, while the MC has to clear various conditions before he can retaliate because of "muh politics" even though he has the upper hand in terms of influence.

As strong as the MC is, he's treated like a middle-class mob who attracts the ire of bottom-tier tr*sh who thinks they have a chance at beating... more>> the MC, while the top class characters thinks he's just above average. <<less

I know people say that this is a dark version of Pokemon but I disagree. The only thing the two have in common is that people summon pets to fight. Other than that they are completely different. TCOSP has good world building, a very organized rank system and best of all it avoids most xianxia cliches like and extremely overpowered MC and completely brainless villains who starts blood feuds for s*upid reasons like looking at them the wrong way.

The cons are that while it has a pretty fast pace, sometimes... more>> the time skips makes it hard to figure out how much time has gone past. Another thing is that while reading this novel I sometimes got the feeling that the side characters aren't developed well enough. The author develops a character to a certain extent and then 3 chapters later those characters are thrown to the wayside and never heard from again. I found this a bit annoying but what I really didn't like about this novel was the ending. I am someone who likes happy endings and this one was bit too bittersweet for my liking. Its a good ending but I would have liked it better if it was a happy one. After all the author puts the MC through the least they could do is give them a happy ending or put them out of they're misery. I also didn't like who the MC ended up with in the end.

But all in all it was a good read and one that I recommend. I enjoyed reading it and thats probably why the ending kinda ripped my heart out. ;) <<less

My Rating for this is 3.5

Overall this is a very good read. The start is great and the concept will get you hooked. decent plot, decent characters and decent MC. Frankly I could have easily given this a 4 - 4.5 star rating. Why didn't I do that? Hmmm... although that ending is an open ending, it just leaves a tad bit of bad aftertaste for me.

I'm not saying that the ending is bad. It was just not up to par with how the story progressed. I mean, if you... more>> are reading something great and it keeps on getting better... only to fall short in the end, it leaves a bad aftertaste. His team of "Pets" do have character, but they also fell short at the end.

Again I stress out that this is a decent story. I just wasn't satisfied on how the last few chapters were written. This story may work for you, so if you have spare time give this one a go and enjoy the ride. <<less

Definitely a very unique novel. The first arc where the MC is alone and against the world, it is quite enjoyable and refreshing. However, the story falls apart quickly because the plot lines afterwards is uninspiring and all it is is the MC going against "young masters".

Also, the author spends an abnormal amount of time describing the stage and level of soul pets, purely to pad the word count. It was tolerable at first, but after hundreds of chapters of the author describing pets and their phase and stage, its... more>> just dumb. <<less

The darker version of Pokemon, where trainers and their soul pets are at risk of dying a bloody death and the criminal organization are actually competent at what they do. The main character's personality is agreeable (not wishy washy or arrogant to the point of annoyance) and strong (relative to his peers, not completely over the top OP).

This is really quite an interesting read. After the first few chapters I thought this is similar to pokemon having "pets" battle but with a bloodier disposition as either the pets or the owner dies. The plot is really interesting and the development is good but as of now I don't have any idea yet of the details regarding the world the MC lives in - where he was born, the map of his world, the levels of power the "pets" and the owner get. I don't know if these... more>> details are really important but it is kind of interesting to know the details from my pov. Anyhow, up to c58 this looks very promising.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the translation is quite good. You can clearly understand the intentions and the sentences flow well. Thanks and keep it up! <<less

The charm for me vanished when the mother showed up. Mommy will fix it, instant death knell.

What was an interesting Pokemon like plot, with a cute Vulpix instead of an annoying yellow rat that doesn't die or age, completely unraveled for me when the parents truths were mentioned. Spoiler alert.

Despite the MC having pushed himself and his team along, by himself, surviving terrifying odds against all hope (read the blurb), the parents are revealed to be be extreme powerhouses... I am not joking. Who apparently didn't care enough about their... more>> only son, till over a year after he went missing. To an island death camp. The outrage I felt over this, that the mother could appear at a crucial moment, after the MC had been struggling so hard, and just say she would fix everything, made me rage quit this without regret.

It was shaping up to be interesting too, what with fusing with the white nightmare and all, but after introducing a story killer like this, the author is a special kind of s*upid. <<less

The plot armor is so thick! This is made worse by the fact that the characters sometimes know it. This reads like an edgy shonen antihero who can achieve anything with intense emotion and belief. Of course everyone else's intense emotion and belief does nothing if they are against our super special protagonist. This is so hard to read. The story gets more interesting after a few hundred chapters but it never gets better. It actually gets even be worse due to the baffling level of inconsistencies.

It was pretty good up through about 700, but got worse after that point and I dragged myself through 500 chapters more hoping it'd get better, but I was wrong.
Spoiler

The battle between two half demons was probably the tipping point, and it was the best part of the story, at least for me.

[collapse]
The world building was the best aspect, so there are a few parts where than shines through, or at least isn't blocked by a subpar plot, that I enjoyed. Overall, I'd say the first few hundred chapters are decent for light reading, but I'd quit at 500 the earliest and 700 the latest.

This might be the best light novel I've ever read. If you ever liked Pokemon or the light novel Overlord, you'll love this. Other reviews are pretty accurate. It has great world building and interesting characters. The sou pet idea is great. It also has dark elements to it, which I love, even though it doesn't usually go into too much detail during disgusting or gorey scenes.

I can't say I enjoyed it nor can I say it bored me to death..

In a way this novel is about:

70% Soul pets battling

... more>> 10% Explaining the pets

10% Face-slapping Arrogant enemy/Awing the MC

10% Plot progression

Yup I can only say that this novel is only for those who like reading about battles and less about the actual plot..

For now (v2ch17) I can't see anything good about this novel except the fighting so I will just list things I don't like.

1. Story is too focused on the MC - where are the side characters? they don't even appear, wait was there actually side charcters? I can't remember as they are not mentioned much. (Soul pets are a package deal with MC so they don't count as side char. IMO)

2. MC is just too ruthless - no I mean I don't care about him killing people but he is even killing the chance to make allies/friends, MC is too self-centered

3. Umm when will MC start to actually rest? I kinda miss filler arcs as they do make novels with a heavy theme a bit lighter. It's just everything up till now is just a repeat of new pet -> training->killing->time skip->new pet->training->killing

4. Too many sudden time skips!! there were chapters where I double checked if I was on the right chapter.. Sure MC suddenly summoning a new monster.... wait what? read a bit more what it's already been a year!?

5. Many mysteries which are better left unsaid as it will probably just be mentioned many hundreds of chapters later. IMO it's a try hard to act mysterious. <<less

Novel is consistently average, 424 chapters in. The beginning wasn't really that amazing either, but it had a lot of promise. There's some foreshadowing about why the MC is missing a soul, his parents, and some other stuff, but the actual chapters themselves are dry and boring. Basically nothing ever happens.

It's a 2* or 3* tops, honestly it's not even worth reading if you really like the premise and such, only read this as a time waster with lots of chapters (and some skim reading.)

There's some good moments, but... more>> it's heavily outweighed by many more rage-inducing moments. Though to be honest, lately there has neither been any good or bad moments, just consistently average and bland chapters with nothing happening. (One mini-arc was promising but then it turned into disappointment with c*ckroach villain trope...)

Original review: v2c191 chapters read (p.s. no idea which chapter that equates to now, around 300 chaps maybe) :

Spoiler

I had the displeasure of reading volume: 2, chapter: 191 of this novel. I might be dropping this...

There's already been several times where contrived BS happen, the MC is usually pretty smart and proactive, but at times the author have the MC make bad or extremely poor decisions arbitrarily.

Fortunately it's negligible for the most part and it can be overlooked—e.g. MC acting a bit weird with women—so I ignored it, but this time it was different.

First of all, the MC knowingly walked into this whole trap even though he could have easily backed out, he completely gave up the initiative and just twiddled his thumbs while waiting to either A) walk into an ambush, or B) wait for someone else get ambushed first, and then get chased down and fight to the death anyway (with no escape route since the ambushers would be behind him, the location is within a mountain with only a single entrance) as they'll come for him afterwards to get rid of any witnesses. (If they get found out about what they did they're dead meat so they HAVE to kill the MC with no way out of it.)

He's pretty much certain that either A or B will happen, but it could be completely avoided by just turning back. The person leading the MC (either into the trap, or away from the trap that was meant for someone else, depending on who is the primary target) couldn't do anything to stop him from returning. If the guide took the imitative to attack MC, then MC could easily just kill him and at that point he would know with absolute certainty that they plan to kill him so there's literally no other way out anyway. (He doesn't wan't to fight them because of their backing—though not any bigger than MC himself—and either way, it's not like he can just let them kill himself because he doesn't want to fight... That's quite literally asking for death.)

Anyway, it turned out that the first target was the other party, and when the fighting broke out, MC even let the guide go away and "check on the situation" even though MC know that in reality he's going to help the others clean up the first target, potentially prevent any escape in case he somehow survived and escaped from the trap, group up and then they'll come together for the MC for their next kill.

But alright, the MC didn't know for absolutely 100% certainty (just 99.99999999%) that they were going to attack, even though with his otherwise very proactive personality he should have returned and/or killed the guide depending on how it escalated without caring about it, so much for all the talk about "not knowing how to not kill" from his 3 years experience of constant slaughter on prison island where he's the sole survivor out of 3000 people.

What happened instead was that even after the fighting broke out on the other side and MC knew that there's no way to avoid the upcoming fight (since he just kept going and wait for them to spring the trap), he didn't even kill the damn guide and gave himself even more future trouble since it's obviously going to be more difficult when they can group up together and team up on the MC. Them fighting against MC and his companion 4v2 is already bad, but now he didn't even take the opportunity to 2v1 the weaker guide and just waited for them to gang up on him 5v2 instead...

And of course, to rub into the face of the readers exactly how big of a mistake it was, the author just had to make it so that the target would have been able to get away if not for the guide intercepting him on his way back... (Making the MC indirectly kill a powerful allay from the same faction as himself.)

For the most part the novel isn't bad and it can be an entertaining or at least a time waster, but at points like this it just ruin the mood for me and I lose the interest to continue...

(If at least the guy getting killed would have been just a nobody then I could have pretended like this is just some s*upid filler and acted as if it never happened, but this will have some impact and presumably influence the novel further down the road so it simply can't be ignored...)

[collapse]

Previous Edit: I actually ended up reading a bit more, until 218, afterwards because I want to like the novel and hoped that it would be fine. But seriously the author just continue with this shit...

Spoiler

MC run away and get them all into a fight against a 800 big group of neutral soul pets/monsters, stuff happens, MC eventually win while one guy get away, and ofc MC has to also get a monarch rank pet (Ghost King), because there can never be a time when MC doesn't profit...

Anyway after this, he return to the city and use his status as 'young master' of "Soul Palace", one of the largest factions in the world or w/e, and eventually get the behind-the-scenes perpetrator aka mastermind imprisoned there. But of course not even half a day pass before he get out, even though he was arrested by the 10th young master, and f*cking killed the 7th (the target of the trap) from one of the greatest factions—which apparently mean nothing at all.

And this guy who was supposed to be a sly and scheming type who just use his wits, as soon as he get out he attack the MC... And challenge him to a fight 2 months later...

[collapse]

While for the most part the novel isn't bad at all, this whole thing just stinks and I lost almost all of my motivation to read... <<less

Well, what to say...

The story in itself is rather interesting I guess... It picks up a bit of my childhood memories of pokemon, I gues and it is a rather well adapted version of this concept.

The world-view in this story as well as the MCs dealing with situations or perosnal interactions are rather straight *however, at least for me, I am not always able to understand his resoning behind it...*

... more>> To the bad points...

I am not sure how much of this is due to the translation, but while reading I somteimes want to knock my head against a hard something, because it is just awful and painstatking to read the same sentance two to three times after anaother whith word-monstroseties to describe a single thing or stage. *certainly not translaters fault*

My guess is, the author wanted to add word-counts and he did it in a rather bad way. It is not my first chinese story and I found this phenomen rather often and it was irrititating, but... To sum it up, I would guess about 5% of the written text are unneccesarry doubling and constructions to add words. It is not always so bad to make one wanting to puke, but it tends to concentrate at some points and becomes a pain in the a**. Esspecially descriptions in battle, or specific characteristic actions tend to be copy-pastes, once a technic is activated or a person appears... It is a nice thing to SEE in an animation, but it becomes somethings you automaticly start to skip while reading...

A, skipping, good word! Next issu is about skipping in the context. I do not mean timeskips here, but skips action, to action. Sometimes the MC does something in a seemingly coherent way, and later it is told he did something off-screen during the descrition. It is confusing, but not too bad and only really stroke me two or three times.

Worse is skipping from a scene to the next, while I have to ask myself "Well... where is the rest?" The author seems to sometimes have either forgotten or accdantly deleted the end of a scene. Nothing to bad for the story, but it ruins the flow of reading...

Next is a problem with the translation I guess, but might also be a problem in the raws. Names are not continuatly translated in the same way. Confusing without end. To tell the truth, I am sure the same is true for the descritpion like Names of Items, special levels of technics and soul-pets as well, but I am often to lazy to really read them completly or even memorise the exact constelation... specificly because there are some that sound rather alike it becomes confusing, but that is perhaps not the translators fault...

Another issue with the author is, that I have to guess he is rather young and has a tendency to write in a sometimes child-like manners. It is only bad because there are many other issues, so well...

But this is a bit disapointing, since it lets the author skip some nice possibilities of interaction on a deeper level... Or interaction at all, that is not specifically necessary to get from A to B. Sometimes you get the feeling the text is more like a skeleton waiting for the flesh and skin to become a real story...

To sum it all up:

Nice idea, want to know how it goes on, BUT.... Do not start reading it, if you are no at least a bit masochistic or completly imune to the points I listed above. And even the development I am interested in is more like, what kind of new idea for a Monster, Technik or background (at least that exists) does the author have... Interaction between the characters? They are at least till now only shallow and most characters are acting more plot-convenient, than authentic... <<less

TL;DR If you want a combination of Bleach and Pokemon. This is the novel for you.

Bad parts:
The power level system is badly over-engineered making it harder to digest than usual. On top of element, race, talent, and species, the author gives you phase, stage, class, rank and lastly, OP TRAINER SKILL. Simply mind-boggling... the magic of as* pull from that over-engineered system loop hole. Also, yes, just like Ash, the MC also did something like "pikachu vs ground element" and explained narratively to convince you it isn't a*s pull using the over-engineered system loophole.

Narration and pacing style isn't my cup of tea. Writing style is average at best. One example of many ridiculous things is when describing females, the author would put quite an effort but it's very minimum for the males. Description for the pets are somehow in the middle between females and males. I can imagine the girls more vividly than the pets because of this author's tendency.

Pacing is all over the place, the filler chapters (chapters between arcs) are mediocre.

This also suffers huge amount of information repetition like your average Xianxia/Xuanhuan novel.

Good part:

The plot is somehow interesting. I'm actually intrigued by it.
