In the instant that his soul awakened, a new world emerged in front of his eyes. It was a foreign world, a world of Fuzhou. Countless secret realms, countless charming beasts. There were even higher-levelled Fuzhou worlds.

12th Guo was like a pawn crossing the river*. He instantly killed all enemies that obstructed his survival. He needed to constantly get stronger, needed to find even stronger Fuzhous.

When he stood on the peak of the Fuzhou world, could he still continue forward?

* this line is likely a reference to the game of Xiangqi/象棋, where a pawn/soldier, upon crossing the halfway line of the board, known as the river, gains additional abilities.

NOTE KEEP THIS IN MIND TO MAKE IT MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE:
Fu is 符, translates to 'rune'
Zhou is 咒, translates to 'curse', 'spell', or 'incantation'

From the story:
"Fu Knights mainly produce FuZhou, and Zhou Knights mainly use Fuzhou. There is not a strict difference between the two, some Fu Knights can use FuZhou to attack, and some Zhou Knights can make good FuZhou. However, FuZhou Knights have the most balanced abilities.”

- Fu Warriors are people who can't use or create Fu, but are able to be imprinted with... more>> Fu that strengthen their body to super-human levels. They can also use Fu weapons - tools embedded with Fu that give them magical properties - though these haven't been described very well yet.
- Fu Knights are people who can create Fu and Fu weapons, but don't usually use them. They're the combat artisans and weaponsmiths of this world. Fu Warriors can very rarely be promoted to Fu Knights, as usually kids with potential to become Fu Knights are identified early on and trained for that role specifically. Fu Warriors are generally those 'left over' who don't make the cut as a potential Knight.

- Zhou Knights can use Fu, but generally can't create them. They are the combat masters. They start off as Zhou Warriors and can easily be promoted to Zhou Knights as they gain power and experience. This makes the warrior/knight terminology a pain due to the inconsistency.

- FuZhou Knights can both create and use Fu, but can't use the standard physical power-up body runes, and so are weak to start with, but power up immensely as they gain experience / skills. This is our MC, of course. Finally, (for terminology) the levels warrior / knight / master are just the beginning three power levels of nine total. Cktalon of Gravity did a personal translation of the levels: Apprentice, Knight, Master, Erratic Master, Sacred Master, Grand Sacred Master, Fake Soul Realm, and Real Sacrificial Alter. The first translator did not explain the terms at all, and they get used All The Time. Really made it difficult for me to get through the beginning chapters, since I had NO idea what the difference / implications / style were. The story is slow, but ok - I envision an early Conan-The-Barbarian-style world with item spellcasters and body enchanters. The characterizations fall a little flat - the MC "12th", falls into the 'genius character, normal author' trope - writing for him states he's all that, but can't really show it. Side characters are very much side characters - one dimensional tropes: 'The Girl', 'The Sniper', 'Generic Swordsman' 'Dumb Berserker', 'The Master', etc. Still works well enough, though, for the current length. Time will tell if it gets to be a problem as it builds.

Worldbuilding is overall good, though when it fails, it's horrible (food production and economics, for two of the more painful moments). I do like some of the implications present, though, and hope the author explores them. <<less

Very good novel. Probably one of the most likeable MCs as well since he's not a crazed killer nor is he shitty pe*vert. He's more like a decent and knowledgeable guy trying to survive in a world completely different from his own.

What I appreciate enormously is that there is no f*cking bullying. Like honestly, finding a xianxia where the MC is NOT bullied is like finding a treasure buried in your backyard, that's how rare it is.

Also, there's no harem, thank god. I'm at that point where I'd rather choose... more>> for a novel to not have any romance at all instead of having 10 girls hoping on the MC's d*ck as if he were some sort of deity.

------

The pacing of the story is very good and the rest of the characters are likeable as well. You'll be hard pressed to find the typical douchebag "young master" or scumbag antagonists that you see in every damn xianxia at nearly every damn chapter. The power leves and the cultivation system are quite original if you ask me, it's refreshing. Bottom line, it's a full 5 stars from me and I highly recommend it. <<less

it's good.

It's a Xianxia, yes. But it has it's own type of flavour.

The Main Character is a boy who awakened from his third reincarnation at the age of 8. His first life was as (reclusive) monk and his second as a farmer? With wife. This gives him some pre-knowledge, but since his third reincarnation is in an entirely different world, things are still fresh to him. So he has some advantage, but is also unknowledgable about many things. This helps a lot towards explaining the world in a more natural... more>> way, instead of the MC suddenly being like "oh yeah, there's this and that, I forgot to mention". Which is a common trope/fault in other reincarnation story's.

All the typical concepts of a xianxia appear. You have the disciple growth period and various competing sects within this world. The world has it's own dangers and you're slowly lead through a solid understanding of this world.

The pacing isn't very fast, but it's not overly slow either. The volumes are clear indicators of change about to happen.

One of the things that give this novel a particular 'flavour', as I put it, is the usage of the word Fu (and Zhou). I understand why it's left 'untranslated', you'll pretty much get informed about their meaning as you read the story. And you'll get used to the word usage as you get further along in the story. The "FuZhou" concept is basically the cultivation method of this world, which can be separated in several parts. Fu warrior, Fu knight, Zhou Knight, Fuzhou knight and the higher ranks (master etc.). It gets explained in the story.

The applications of the cultivation method are also outside the norm, although not entirely unusual. It's more along the lines of inscribing symbols onto a person to enhance strength or onto a 'wooden tile'/'paper charm' (rune stones). Once you give the story a try, you'll know what I mean. This brief explanation isn't doing it justice. (It reminds me 'a bit' of the rune system of 'The Death Gate Cycle' from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman)

One thing I dislike:
Spoiler

The MC once found some ancient chants, which strengthened his soul and is the whole reason he's able to reincarnate and have his former memories. Except apparently the chants also somehow inflict him with the inability to produce off-spring (he can't have kids). I somehow find that addition to be somewhat ludicrous and I don't understand how his soul would make him infertile, when that should be purely a bodily function. I personally enjoy it when a MC at one point can have children. To cut that path off at the very start is a minus to me.

[collapse]

I'm giving it a 4 for now. The initial novel description felt a bit lacking. I hope my review at least gives you more incentive to read. <<less

Update: later volumes become really terrible, but the first few volumes were excellent. Here is my earlier review before it tanked:

---

This is one of my favorites, in part because the world feels much more original and alive than most, but also because the MC himself is original and very coherent.

For starters, one would generally expect an MC with centuries of age to be different from a h**ny teenager. For the very first time, in this LN we have an MC who accumulated actual wisdom in his life, like understanding that... more>> life is best lived when you aim for the highest things while taking everything into account (including plans for a truly good life for your spouse and kids - or not to have them at all). Yet some plans simply don't fit well with raising a family...

Furthermore, it makes perfect sense to me that the MC would not be able to have children as a natural cost to being able to live for ever. But it isn't a bad cost anyway, unless your goal is to lead and micro-manage an exponentially growing number of progeny as you continue to live for ever? Don't forget your children are very likely to rebel at some point! (LOL)

Anyhow, as far as I see it, being immortal but not having kids is a great idea (just look at Coiling Dragon to see why not), and I have no regrets at all for the lack of romance this causes.

---

Anyhow, with that out of the way, the world-building is top-notch. The different types of fighters, different types of clans, truly dangerous monsters, etc.: everything is cool and well balanced.

I found the fights to be particularly well choreographed - up to the current point the powers are fun and largely comprehensible.

My one small critique though: the MC is sometimes too much of a swindler, like when he profits massively by speculating on foodstuff during wartime, or when he haggles too relentlessly with merchants. These passages are few and far between though, and in general, the MC is truly outstanding in many ways, so it is fun to follow along, with just the right amount of tension and danger to keep you completely hooked! <<less

Too slow paced for me, if you like ISSTH, you might like this. Also, the word Fu is added to a lot of items, or moves, i.e., Fu bills, Fu bag, Fu, Fu Knight, etc.

In his first life the protagonist was a buddhist monk that found a magic chant that promised to allow him to recall things (slowly as he grows, fully recovering memories a little before age 10 and merging with the new him) as he reincarnates (not your typical corpse snatching transmigration, actually reborn as a baby). He eventually dies of old age and it turns out it works. On his second life he was a regular soldier until again dying of old age. On his third life he reincarnates into a... more>> world of magic and cultivation.

People hunt magic animals to craft magic runes. some people can train the inborn ability to craft runes and cast spells from said runes like your rune based western fantasy wizard, but with their level of energy (and thus tier of runes they can craft and wield) and lifespan being xianxia style cultivation. They even have a western spellbook... which replaces the gold core stage, and is a spiritual thing that let them keep runes in their dantian? store large quantities of runes while perfectly sorting them and rapidly casting them, also they can fly by that stage of their cultivation. Each rune has a limited number of uses, but can be slowly recharged so long as they haven't been exhausted, if they are exhausted they break (and you can get several extra uses from them if you do so). So very rarely would a rune master do this.

Others can become mighty magic warriors by receiving runes into their bodies from a rune crafter (whom they take as their master) and then cultivating their body strength using those runes, with a limit to the rate at which they can accept runes and the need to cultivate to acclimate to each new rune they recieve.

Some, like the MC, can do both of those. MC also discovers that his reincarnation chant from his first life synergizes amazingly well with this worlds magic and cultivation methods. Accelerating his cultivation rate massively, and becomes a "genius" disciple. Then we find out there are secret realms (pocket dimensions that open under specific circumstances) which can potentially be linked to multiple full sized worlds, allowing interdimensional travel via nexus type secret realms.

I honestly can't decide if this deserves a 3 or 4 out of 5. It has its flaws but it also has its charm. The flaws mainly center on how much plot armor and luck the MC has, as well as the overly fast pacing and issues with the world building. meat is vastly cheaper than grain because the author doesn't understand biology, and before the MC nobody had the idea to make tasty food. Instead they would just boil meat in plain water without spices or additional ingredients, or make flavorless gruel by boiling the grain in plain water without spices. Everyone is very impressed when MC invents basic cooking.

The charm in that the MC is not a psycho, the neat way reincarnation and cheat is handled, parts of how the story progresses, and the original spin on cultivation. <<less

This story is quite good. The author's other work God of Thunder is also quite good.

Notables:
-Translation quality is excellent.
-Complicated cultivation methods wherein everyone doesn't magically know everything. "Oh hey cultivator from a billion billion years ago, of course I know you!" None of that stuff.
-Really really interesting 'cheat'. It actually makes a lot of sense and isn't a cheat at all.
-Pacing is really good, characters are relatable. Not too much detail, not too little either.

All in all an easy 5 star, and a solid recommendation to... more>> anyone who likes Xianxia/Xuanhuan stuff. <<less

Grammar: 4/5
Story: 4/5
Writing: 3.8/5

(Update v5ch3: Yep, still good.)

(Update v5ch2: I'm really sad right now... I've caught up to the currently translated pages. Honestly I was expecting more... so much more... completed translated chapters. This stuff is addictive. I couldn't stop, I didn't sleep, I could only read on and wonder what shenanigans this guy would get into. There is some character growth, not as much as I was hoping for, but enough for you to get attached to some of the side characters and the... more>> MC. Dear Lordus, Please send me more completed chapters, A.S.A.P.)

Well, I didn't expect to enjoy this, nor did I expect for the translation to be done so well for a Xianxia (reading from Path of Translation). The grammar is nearly perfect in comparison to most other translations you'll find. The story is a smooth and slowly progressing ball of interesting. The writing style of the author is only semi-xianxia-ish. The descriptions are apt, the flow of time progresses in a logical manner, and the characters are given characteristics that you can link to individuals. Very much Top Quality stuff here. Glad I took the chance to read this one after checking reviews. <<less

Setting = interesting and detailed

plot = almost non existent

characters = 2 dimensional MC, 1 dimensional side characters

It's a light read who can entertain you. As long as you don't think too much about what you read, you can flip through it and have fun.
What I most enjoy about this novel is the setting of the story. There are a lot of details about cultivation and I like the idea of using fu magical items.
As for the rest. I don't know why the MC is alive and seek strength.... more>> The whole idea of him being able to reincarnate is hazy, we don't know how it works and the MC jumps to conclusion in regard to it as if he had fully understood it.
Spoiler

he failed to have children with his wife in his previous world so he assumed he could not have children due to his soul cultivation? Wtf, did he tries to imp**gnate multiple women, how does he knows it's due to his soul?

[collapse]

What's really making this story lose stars in my review is the characters description.
Basically, the MC is omnipotent and almighty and all the other characters are here to suck up to him and praise him for his actions and personality.
Here's an example: The MC is 9 years old at the time and he's travelling with his master.

Spoiler

“There’s still one alive!” reported on the the Fu Masters. Qi Nan Shan brusquely replied, “Kill him!”.

Luo Jie interjected, “Wait! Bind him and take him with us!”.

Qi Nan Shan was angry beyond words, he said, “Elder, are you really going to let him live?”

“I’m not letting him live, I want to know who they are! I almost forgot about it during the killing! Good thing there’s still one alive to talk.” replied Luo Jie.

Qi Nan Shan said, “Damn, it seems I also forgot about that. f*ck..... Who the hell are they, attacking without warning, did they take us for prey?”.

[collapse]

This is basically how the story goes, the MC is 9 years old and must teach the masters of this world how to remember simple things. Then they praise him as a genius. <<less

A really enjoyable novel that starts of strong and unique that eventually devolves into a deus ex machina slogfest with a cowardly MC that has no agency. It has been over 10 volumes and the MC has barely done a single thing by himself while power leveling. It feels like an eternal, lazy, shounen filler arc now and waifus are starting to turn up in a contrived ways.

I still absolutely recommend the starting volumes, but I can see how people can easily be turned off by the later volumes. I'm... more>> only reading it because I like the start so much and am hoping beyond hope for it to return to grace after this mighty fall into mediocrity.

EDIT: Vol 38 - no plot spoilers, just for politeness' sake.

Spoiler

It's just extortion and blackmail using a borrowed fist while gallivanting across the realms impersonating a loot goblin. No romance, either. Long time characters become either scenery or forgotten, old abilities and items that used to be important just vanish. Powerful people become as common as cabbages, then quickly get left behind by rapid power creep. What even happened to this book? There's no story anymore, it's just collecting items and upgrading power level.

[collapse]

I recommend reading it until the culmination of volume 11/12's arc, it's good for few more volumes but the arc in 11/12 signifies the start of the powerleveling boogaloo junkfest. <<less

So far as of v3c7 this novel isn't so bad, Theirs a solid reason behind the MC being so clever and resourceful which is constantly pounded into your head every time he acts clever.. Meh

The plot and setting of the story seems to be well thought out and the world seems to be well fleshed out before the author decided to write the story. The story it's self is in its early stages so I can't really judge but so far it seems solid and allows for room to grow.
I recommend this to anyone who likes XianXia

I love this novel mainly because the only other one that gives me the same feel to it is chronicles of primordial war... mature MCs, completely unique cultivation system and a world/realm setting that is completely different than what we are used to. So far, no young masters to bug the sh*t out of you.... ancient settings make it so that that species doesn't survive teehee :D I wish that the updates were faster though. There is a huge difference towards the end of v5 since there is a change... more>> in translators and some terms change but you get used to it real quick. Give this a shot though :D <<less

Its dreary so far. For the really hardcore readers who have read lots of chinese novels and japanese novels, you would find most of this boring. In the intro, there is not much new stuff going except with a different cultivation system that would be more primitive and basic compared to wuxia novels like ISSTH and the MC has reincarnated for his third life. The events that happen in the novel are quite subdued compared to other novels where there are large special fighting events in sects and between sects.... more>> The good thing about this novel is that it has no harem or that weak, timid MC shit.

The story is set in a primitive and barbaric world where they hunt wild beasts and take inspiration from natural magical symbols and formations from the beast to create and perfect their own set of symbols. These symbols grant physical or magical (FuZhou) abilities to people and they are stacked on top of each other until a 'qualitative' increase occurs and then they start using more complex symbols.

So far, there is a lot of world building, fights in every volume, lots of characters that are introduced, little bits of personality grafted onto the characters, and a so-called sh*t ton of luck falling on the MC.

The bad part of this novel is that you don't have a really strong sense of idea on what's going to happen, sorta of like a controlled environment where the author just throws things at you one at a time. There is a little indication that the mc's goal was to get strong so that he could power up and protect his soul, so that the next time he dies and reincarnates, he does it safely. But the problem is that the character is currently a nine year old kid with a powerful master who has lots of underlings and protects him, the fights are all kinda meaningless and tasteless if you've got a master who can use his long range magic (FuZhou) to kill anyone as well as the fact that the MC is always following the master around.

One of the recent fights was where the MC gets pulled into a fight with an arrogant young master whose got good potential and they start fighting because the young master did not know who the mc's master was and also because the MC did not want to tell the arrogant guy who his master was. This evolves on to involve the guards that are protecting the MC and the arrogant guy's father. In short, arrogant guy and his father lose and pay reparation money for fighting with the MC. This is done before, maybe the author couldn't think of anything else but it's boring to me. <<less

I like this novel, It's fun to read, the MC is a neutral person (not good or bad/ If you evil he attack if you good he Will be good) I don't quite like the other MC who are too good the enemy almost killed him and he forgive it it's too unrealistic

That he like to give away the soul scripture, it was first exchangeed with other scripture (with Li Ran), then he started giving it away like giving it to Qi Wuzhen, then it was said that he already given it to dead Wood (i forgot his name) and Monel (Dead Wood Wife), then he have it to a random girl who followed him (the girl could leave anytime she wants), I forgot to mention he gave it to handsome old man too (i don't care about this one, because Its benifical to him) and he never gave it to his 2 loyal followers Eagle demon and luo Zhan, maybe he already told Lou jie too and Nanshan but it was never mentioned about this Its only said that he need 100 years to advance again without the soul scripture, anyway I don't like the soul scripture where telled everywhere because it feels like the MC lost Its speciallity the others could recite the scripture too so what is his specialness
