Waking up, Kim Hajin finds himself in a familiar world but an unfamiliar body.

A world he created himself and a story he wrote, yet never finished.

He had become his novel’s extra, a filler character with no importance to the story.

The only clue to escaping is to stay close to the main storyline.

However, he soon finds out the world isn’t exactly identical to his creation.

This is absolutely one of the best webnovels/serials I have ever read. I have read Coiling Dragon, Desolate Era, I Shall Seal The Heavens, A Will Eternal, and many others I have dropped because they didn't suit my tastes.

This novel is quite different from all of them.

It's different in an amazing way: the characters feel incredibly relevant and alive. There is fantastic storytelling and the MC, as well as the supporting cast, are fleshed out in an unprecedented fashion. All characters seem relevant and a name you see mentioned briefly... more>> may very well come back again. There is a lot of high-quality (almost soap-opera grade) drama that is also very well-done.

I initially hesitated to read this because I didn't like the novel's premise (author sent into his own unfinished book). When I did start it (because of the glowing reviews), I felt like the first chapter or so was slow; however, as soon as Kim Hajin (the MC) syncs with his laptop (which happens almost at the very beginning, so no spoiler), the action starts and doesn't stop.

I'd recommend this book to people who love books with a central OP protagonist, especially since Kim Hajin has a greater purpose (making sure his novel ends well and escaping it) vs just getting stronger for the sake of strength alone (like many cultivation novels). <<less

Yes, this novel does include a lot of tropes that have been done over and over, but because the story feels quite unique I don't mind it. After spending weeks reading the first few chapters of dozens of novels, this is the only one that I have found in a long time that holds my interest. The author does a very good job of giving you things to look forward to and hypothesize about.

This novel does have the trope of the main character being transported into a world that he... more>> knows just about everything about, but this is merely the back drop for the story to take place. In other novels this can make the story become stale very quickly, but because it never easily solves the conflicts it is still interesting. <<less

The Novel's Extra is, at a first glance, a typical 'real life person gets reincarnated as a side character in a novel but wow whats this its a cheat that puts life on easy mode', and at second it is too. However, upon closer inspection, it develops into a story not far off from works of authors such as Brandon Sanderson or Neil Gaiman (Though, I would claim, nowhere near exceeding). As the story progresses, a flat and stereotypical novel cast (as written by the main character) starts to demonstrate... more>> remarkable development and show realistic personalities while a generic world is charted out to be much more than it seems.

Unlike far too many other novels with game elements (including this author's previous work), The Novel's Extra does not mistake character development for "strengthening". While there may be a good amount of attention put on the "system", the main focal point is the characters. This novel has phenomenal characters who all seem like real people. They laugh, they cry, they have moments of valor and moments of weakness. As the novel goes on, each character is further fleshed out. They change at a pace so fast and realistically that I can liken it to watching infants grow up. Before one realizes, the characters become more than just lines of text but rather real personas (I actually had this experience myself. I was subconsciously lumping this in with other novels of similar plot, until in one particularly tense scene that was heavily built up. I realized my palms were sweating and my heart was beating at an elevated rate, somewhat comically).

The world-building for The Novel's Extra is, while not particularly outstanding, still good. The first 100 chapters or so mainly occur within the academy, so there's not much to say there. During the (mis?) adventures they have while doing school activities, a bits of information are gleaned about the outside world, so when the focus is shifted away from the academy it's not too bad. However, while the information about the world may be relatively abundant, it's still seems very incomplete. The main problem is that Kim Hajin (the MC) is the author of the book, but we are given relatively little information about so many things. This makes things that pop up seem somewhat random. The story is well enough premeditated that all information fits relatively well, but it's still not executed as well as it could have been.

Finally, the plot. Kim Hajin's goal is, not uniquely, "keep the story on track", but various complications (Such as the person who sent him into the book changing the details in minute but relevant ways) shift a large amount of the attention off of the "real" main character and onto him. At some point, rather realistically, he stops trying to keep the story on track but instead expediting the growth of the characters with potential. His unusual amount of attention devoted to the original dramatis personae leads to various comedic misunderstandings, making the early chapters lighthearted. However, this does not continue for long, as the threat of the devils forces Hajin into the underworld. The story quickly takes a turn for the darker (though still incorporating some jocular elements) as he grapples with the psychological implications of killing novel characters who seem all too real for the sake of the greater good. The plot is riveting, immersive, and extremely interesting, making me anticipate each chapter with great eagerness. However, it is not without its flaws. The most obvious perhaps are the inherent fallacies of game elements in general. His "system" offers various options that seem too much like a Deus Ex Machina. The lack of a skills system is a step up from others, but his ability to create "Gifts" practically replaces it. He also has some plot armor. This novel attributes it to his insane luck statistic, which he raised using his points before that was banned (Apparently there's some guy who watches over Kim Hajin to make sure he's not s*upidly powerful). This allows him to cheese his way into making ridiculous powers and items for himself. Though these do not cause an imbalance within the story, it's not ideal either.

Overall, The Novel's Extra is a breath of fresh air compared to the all-too-common 'reincarnated into a novel' books. Though it really only starts to pick up in the hundreds, the relatively jovial early chapters are extremely enjoyable. As the novel progresses, superb characters along with a great plot and good world-building spin a well-made tale of epic proportions. <<less

The best thing about this novel is its solid writing style and gripping execution that leaves you always wanting more, and its good cast of characters set up in a way that leads to humorous and satisfying interactions. The female leads don't fall for him instantly, leading to a more satisfying progression, for example, and the MC's obliviousness is more hilarious than facepalm-inducing.

The main thing that sets the protagonist apart from other characters is that his own abilities operate outside the system that the world has setup, which results in... more>> him being consistently misunderstood by characters who can only think in terms of that system. In essence, he gains powers that operate on limited uses/have an intrinsic costs - His base power is low but he can reach high peaks, whereas others have no peaks but a high base power. To compare, it's like he's a wizard with spell slots stuck in a world with only fighters.

And that's the "conceit" that drives the novel - that he is consistently less powerful than the "main characters, " thus skirting the trope of the protagonist with massively unfair abilities, but he always manages to pull just enough power out of his nether regions to save the day.

As for criticisms: It consistently pretends, both narratively and in-story, that the main character is much weaker than he really is, which seems unrealistic given the feats he's accomplished. The MC often feels too flexible in the scope of his abilities, which makes his solutions feel hackneyed rather than ingenious. Finally, it doesn't seem like there's necessarily an end in sight: we know that a 10 year timeskip occurs, but not what heralds it, which sets an extremely broad scope for the novel to possibly cover. We also have no indication of how the MC might escape his predicament, meaning that things will likely continue on as they are for a good while.

Definitely a good, exciting read, especially if you like isekai/transmigration and are looking for something original and well-written. <<less

Relationship comedy drama at it's finest. This is one of the few novels where misunderstandings are hilarious and entertaining rather than infuriating. It's enough for me to overlook the novel's flaws, such as the MC's cheats being a literal Deus ex Machina on demand.

If you liked the other web fiction: Worth the Candle, google it. You would probably like this.

I rated it 5 stars.

Why?

  1. Character is OP in knowledge. Since he created this world. BUT... the wrinkle is someone else is also rewriting parts of it to make it 'better' and more 'enjoyable'. haha. Kind of like readers try to tell web writers where to go in their stories. LOL. Good stuff. So sure, our OP MC does have a cheat, but it's not totally world breaking. No more than Superman or Saitama.
  2. The supporting and other characters that should be MC but aren't since our MC is there, do have details that make them live. They have complaints, have issues and drama and some are just plain annoying enough that I wouldn't want to hang out with them in real life if I could avoid them. So kudos to nearly Oscar winning supporting roles.
  3. World building is very nice. It's like our world, but maybe a few decades later. And the science and magic is blended well enough that I can almost believe it works.
  4. Entertaining balance of action, drama and mystery between the MC and the world he mainly created. It's fascinating to watch someone be surprised by how things turn out from a few sentences on a screen.
good read. check it out!

A really promising novel by an author I didn't know before, I'll be sure to read every single one of his works from now on. That's how amazing this novel is. It justs keeps pushing you to read the next chapter because it's really well written and "attractive" if I can say that about a novel (lol). Oh and excuse my poor English, I'm not from a country where you're supposed to know how to speak English.

Hope this will encourage you to start reading this novel if you haven't yet.... more>> As for me... I'll just wait for the next chapter eagerly T_T <<less

Damn, didn't realise there were only 8 chapters out so far... I'm a fan of this author by now xD

The story is pretty good so far. I was also worried the MC was going to be a pushover but he's definitely not.

The MC gets s**ked into the world of a story he's written. He doesn't take over the body of the MC or the villain, as you'd expect, but some nameless side character. Luckily he gets "Story Points", which he can use to upgrade his character, and hopefully survive long... more>> enough to find a way to return to his real life.

I'm interested in how he'll grow and how he'll interact with the cast that's been introduced :) <<less

I've always seen this on several recommendations page many times yet I just couldn't muster enough interest to start reading it. That was until I found the manhwa adaptation and fell absolutely intrigued with it but since the manhwa has so few chapters I started reading the novel to satisfy my curiosity and I'm so happy I made that choice.

The novel has so intriguing plot points and twists that you just can't help but be immersed in the story wholeheartedly and long story short I ended up spending 2 whole... more>> days straight completing the novel.

Kim Hajin is a very likeable MC tho a bit dense and does things a bit questionably? He makes concise decisions but sometimes I just can't agree with the things he chooses to do,

like choosing to kill chae nayun's brother himself bcs he feels that he needs too and concealing the reasons as to why he did so from chae nayun which led to many years of heartache, misunderstandings & resentment and permanently changed his relationship with chae nayun

I also find his decision to use rachel's blood to create evandel a bit rash and neglectful of other's rights. Bcs knowing that rachel wanted to have a daughter of her own (as in dreamt of being pregnant and having a family) and by creating evandel kim hajin just kinda shatters that hope? Its a bit sad too that kim hajin only decided to reveal evandel to rachel like 5 years later and robbed evandel the time that she could've spent with rachel

Like just bcs I understand why he made those decisions doesn't mean I agree with them.

I guess I just wished that those plot points could've been more logically thought of and not feel rushed?

I probably would've liked the novel a bit more if there wasn't so many ambiguous scenes and atmosphere between kim hajin and the other female characters. Hmm basically he gives off the players vibe.

It does sound like I'm venting and making a bad review on the novel but trust me these are like only a few cons amongst the many hundreds of amazing plot points that you're gonna find in the novel so don't feel discouraged. <<less

EDIT-- after finishing all chapters, I am changing to 3/5 starts: *dashed line to separate original review and now review**

My updated review of this novel is that it started very well, but got lost about 50-60%% of the way through. I think the author jam-packed too many arcs/people in it for the latter half of the novel. Complex settings are awesome, but the recurrent POV shifts with each person having totally different goals and complicated backstories over the last 100 chapters turned into whiplash (there was barely any POV shifting... more>> in the beginning and then there were at least 2 POV's each chapter in the final 25% of the novel with Kim Hajin rarely showing up). The amount of other universes/dimensions/timeline was crazy. I'm all for novels tying up loose ends, having diverse settings, and having a deep character cast, but it honestly got so ridiculous. This novel started out so good. Read my original review below to see how wowed I was. The Tower arc was a honestly a little boring, which I pointed out in my original review, but I didn't think too deeply on it. But, the Tower arc was the start of a steep downhill ride.

I found the end to be satisfying, which was:
Spoiler

Kim Hajin losing his OP-level skills and living a happy life in his novel world with Yi Byul, aka Boss, was beautiful.

[collapse]
Pretty much all the side stories have the women ending up with Kim Hajin in other timelines/what-if scenarios, instead of the author actually concluding the characters in meaningful ways. The side stories made a harem-esque move in a novel that was never that way before.

The woman he ends up with was the obvious choice given the writing of chapters 200+. It was cute.

I still would suggest reading this novel because it's undoubtedly still a beautiful story, but be aware that past chapter 200, your head might hurt. And your heart might too.

-------------------------------------------

As of 256 Chapters:

I am stunned at how great this web novel is. If this were published in Western-book for & marketed, it would undoubtedly be #1 on NYT Bestseller's and even non-fantasy readers would enjoy this.

I am only on chapter 256 out of about 400 chapters. From what I have read so far, this web novel was masterfully crafted by the author. Many web novels are very one-dimensional and lack complex settings, elements and most importantly, a diverse cast of developed characters. This one is the opposite, it is a complex world with deep characters who each have personalities. Other reviewers have commented that they fall under common tropes, but I argue that though the common tropes are there, these characters are so deeply explored that the audience truly feels like they get to know them. These characters are very memorable to me & I believe their common tropes highlight them rather than hinders them.

The story has a beginning and an end. The author keeps this in mind through their storytelling. This may seem like an obvious statement, but with the money of web novels, this often gets lost in translation to pump out lower quality chapters in higher quantity. This is super detailed writing that is reminiscent of my experiences with very-well-laid-out, super-long Western Fantasy. Except this web novel does it in less length (aka less chapters), and more compellingly. It skips boring stuff (aka filler), and just tells a story. Think Attack on Titan or Full Metal Alchemist type storytelling (I will admit this obviously is not AOT or FMAB level stuff, but it's really good for a web novel & I've comparing it to those two manga's storytelling in terms of how there is no filler and only story).

One thing I have disliked at points is the Tower Arc. It has taken so many chapters. I felt like there were many misunderstandings piling up, and I hate the misunderstandings/lack of exchanging information trope. Now, 256 chapters in, all major misunderstandings have been resolved in rather wonderful ways. It was worth the wait.

The Tower Arc is drawing to a close and the story is heating up. The next 100 or so chapters will most likely be intense stuff. I will be editing my review as I get closer to the end of this story. I hope I'm not disappointed, but these 256 chapters have already been great enough for me to complete this story no matter where it goes. <<less

I.. Just cant.. The story is good at the start. I agree with PringleStorian. I don't mind some of the elements that the author is showing (making MC op that outshines the real "mc", favoritism/nationalism, romance etc) really nobody's perfect so I let it slide. But the way that the story is progressing from sky high to all time low.. Really what awaits you is just hate and disappointment..

It started from the this big convoluted mess called tower of wish that you probably didn't expect to be a long... more>> ass arc that just makes the MC shine and shine and op and op and all. At this point he's not an extra anymore. Really, rather than leaving the things to the "real" MC, now he just takes the matter at his own hands..
Spoiler

"Lets kill jin sahyuk." like bro what's the f*cking point at all if the "real" MC will eventually kill her? The girl is the last boss he know that but why the heck he keeps on nerfing her (emotionally or something that's the reason why he keeps on killing her inside the tower) (you will hate that part too). Didn't really make sense plus that confidence is getting on my nerves when he's being so f*cking dramatic with chae nayun and that devil seed arc. Pfft

[collapse]
.

Sigh, rather than luck we probably might have a better story if the author raised his intelligence instead. Making him like some sort of a mastermind pulling the strings behind scenes to overcome the "revisions" that way he can be an extra in the surface without much interactions with the "characters".

But it is what it is. <<less

Dropped.

It's getting harder and harder to read.

I don't understand MC character, what is this kim hajin person is all about? Even after chapter 100-ish passed by, he felt like, intangible, something that author (real one) can shape however he wishes whenever necessary, he felt more fictional than the actual fictional characters he wrote since some of them are actually decent.

The drama, oh god, I know it's korean, and whenever Drama+Korea get mixed up we always got something as mind-boggling as this so much my mom would love to read this.... more>> But whatever with the misunderstanding drama stuff I mean cmon man, even if author really building up all of this bs drama for development of MC love interest, which is okay, it's getting a little too much, there's probably no chapter that doesn't mention this useless drama misunderstanding, is all this even relevant to the plot?

I expected to read about "A writer guy who finds himself in a fantasy world he created as a novel, and need to proceed with the story to somehow find a clue to go back to real world...",

but somehow there's too little of "proceed with the story" part, and more to the "KIM HAJIN IS GOD WOOO!!" part, even more with "Umm...*wriggle*...I think Kim Hajin like me..." part. <<less

Was a good experience, not going to lie and say it’s a masterpiece. The last third of it felt a bit bloated and was quite a slog to read through, but I enjoyed the ending. Started well, but goes into a weird silly loop. Would skip.

The translation is good.

At first, we have non overpowered character struggling in an interesting enough world, but after about a third way in things start getting pointless and boring.

... more>> Roughly 100 chapters in the MC is increasingly OP and often in the dumbest way due to his “incredible luck”, the fact this is a plot point doesn’t make it any less of a cop out and lazy writing.

The story is incredibly repetitive and has the MC go through weak to strong progressions at least 3 times due to “reasons” collecting points of some form, boring. Sometimes the story is hilariously meta, the MC is in a book world, goes into a pocket universe inside which he plays in a VR.... just stop.

There is a time skip at some point, but none of the characters feel like actual adults. The drama also feels poorly manufactured. There is a large vapid harem. What is the point of having a harem if nothing happens? Why is this wish fulfillment and for who ? Is it an Asian thing to want to be popular but alone ? <<less

Started off well I guess. Not too out there, but it was definitely a story I could get engaged too. But then it got bad... fast. I don't really know why I kept reading. I suppose I was fairly new to webnovels at the time and knew no other novel but this and another (which was muuuuch worse).

But seriously. Characters became carboard cut-outs, the world no longer made sense. At some point I was just reading a story about an OP dude who just did whatever people wanted him to... more>> do. I don't even know why this has over 1000 5 stars, is everybody reviewing it after reading 3 chapters?

I mean the romance was AWFUL. I don't even like romance, and I'm pretty good at ignoring it but GOD, this was hell.

I'm know I'm being bitter, and to be honest it was pretty good in the beginning. But after the s****l arc I forced myself to read and only managed to get to the ending of the t***r arc. I really wanted that Chae girl to just die, and Rachel (while much more favorable than the Boss and Chae Nayun) really annoyed me with her naive, gullible, damsel in distress personality. Like why was she first in class if she couldn't do jack!?

Well you like what you like. But this is cliche as hell, with 2-D characters living in space. <<less

Considering all of the five star reviews, I was expecting something that breaks the mold when it comes to the KR genre. What I'm instead presented with is a poorly fleshed out world where the characters are built up in the beginning only to be dropped like a rock whenever someone new is introduced. This is a lot more obvious when you consider certain characters, like Chae Nayun, who early on looks like the most obvious possible candidate for the story's Heroine, but

Spoiler

The multiple arcs that she spends training to kill Hajin for his 'betrayal', IE killing her brother, is discarded almost instantly once she recovers absolute evidence that her brother not being killed when he did would unleash a great calamity upon the world and learns that there was no point in her straight up years of deliberation over her feelings for Hajin. She just instantly snaps back to her personality as she was during the high school arc, which utterly boggled my mind because so much attention was put in her character only for her to just get nothing from it. Other reviews that mention 'feeling the impact of Hajin's actions' are almost specifically referring to this set of events

[collapse]

Basically all of the characters are anime tropes with spots of makeup here and there. There really isn't any original characterization at all except for the developments that happen with Chae Nayun and Chameleon Troupe's Boss, the both of them still really being two dimensional tropes on legs that sometimes have good moments. You have all the KR tropes, the 'Rich and pampered young master', the 'arbitrarily hypercompetent supporting character', you have the original MC who is basically Goku with Fairy Tail powerups who endlessly uses asspull after asspull in order to remain relevant.

The world our MC finds himself in is supposed to be an incomplete work that he wrote, which is probably close to the actual truth considering how seemingly incomplete the ending of this story is. He's sent into this world of his creation with only the ability to read his original story outline and edit parameters of anything (there's some arbitrary limitations in place that disallow him from directly editing landscapes, he eventually gets an ability that bypasses this but he forgets about it.)

Spoiler

Despite hour overpowered such an ability sounds, our MC belongs to the 'Dumber than the average 5year old' school of villainy and thus has absolutely no creativity in using his powers whatsoever. He can do things like give himself the ability to have perfect accuracy and the ability to see through walls but he can't increase the growth rate of his physical parameters at all because he might actually become strong then. The MC never becomes actually powerful, he really stays at the lower end of the powerscale throughout the entirety of the story, only able to actually fight against his enemies due to uber-specific conditional abilities that can only be activated once per month that leave him completely drained and also have increasing costs every time he uses them and also aren't powerful enough to actually kill any major antagonist but also just strong enough to kill someone that main antagonist mistakenly views as strong so that the aforementioned main antagonist refuses to fight our MC despite it being fully within their power to wipe him off the map like a child squishing an ant. The MC is like King from One Punch Man in that respect, where there's a running gag of him being thought of as powerful despite being the equivalent of that farmer with a gun from the start of dragon ball Z

[collapse]

The High School Arc is probably the best part of the story, considering that it has the most amount of worldbuilding and does legitimately set up the world as something that could exist in reality in spite of a couple plot holes here and there. After that, it's like the author was screamed at for not having enough game elements in the story because the rest of it all might as well be JRPGs all the way down. The tower arc had a good start since it introduced a lot of new elements into the story until you reread and realize the author was just taking a fat dump on the details because it's easier that way. The tower arc was a sort of filler hell where every chapter is simultaneously completely superfluous except for one offhand remark by one of the characters which actually turns out to be extremely plot relevant a whole two chapters later. The Demon Realm Incursion arc was so painfully generic I thought I was reading a 50 word JP title.

The ending is just godawful

Spoiler

Hey there reader, did you at least enjoy the changes the MC made on the world? Did you like that everything he did had a ripple, even if the reactions sometimes were completely ret*rded? Well do I have an ending for you! Everything is gone. Nobody will remember the MC. All of his effort is reduced to 0 and all of his accomplishments are rested at the feet of the original world's protagonist. Nobody from the original cast will ever remember him, except for Boss, who turns out the be the Heroine, and the MC spends the rest of his life as a human test subject for experimental medicine in order to make money. What a conclusion.

[collapse]

I wanted to rate this at least a 3 but the ending seriously took a fat sh*t on the entire story, and the last chapter doesn't even have a bittersweet ending, the implication is that the Final Boss will be able to mind control Chae Nayun into accessing a different timeline which will put him firmly outside the abilities of the MC and free to devour the multiverse. 2/5. <<less

I consider my tastes to honestly be pretty much be one with the masses, high up in the rankings? Many people say it’s good? Lots of 5 stars? Chances are I’ll like it too. So when I saw Novel’s Extra I had originally put it off because oh man this was surely going to be a good story right? Well I started reading and found out... not exactly.

It’s not like NE is a badly written story, it’s pretty good! Heck might even above average from the norm in my opinion.... more>> The problem is, I just cant find the drive to read it. I really did try to like MC, especially because I like gun wielding MC’s the most, but the story line was just so boring that once I put it down for the night I literally would have to push myself into going back to it the next day. The writing is solid enough to keep me going if I read enough chapters, but I found myself either putting it off or reading chapters for the sake of finishing/taking it off my reading list. MC’s abilities were just too convenient, too OP, and to me it just became a SAO situation where the story can be pretty good, but so terribly cliche that I’m just bored.

In the end, it’s overall a decent but unoriginal story and while it might get better later I can’t find it in me to continue, thus I’m dropping for now. <<less

A decent read, especially for the first few arcs. As with many web novels, the setting slowly falls apart as time goes on. This can be seen in the reviews as many people who reviewed after 30-100 chapters seem to really enjoy it, whereas those who read further were more likely to be disappointed.

I would recommend reading up until the Tower arc, which is where the setting falls apart IMO. The author even points this out, blaming the MC because the MC is the author of the original story. The... more>> reason that I don't recommend reading further is because the Tower feels thrown in. It takes the popular Korean trope of Towers where you get prizes for completing stuff. All of a sudden the novel becomes a videogame with almost no warning and you just have to go along with it for what may be 100 chapters or so, iirc.

The character development isn't too bad, but by the end of the novel the author has added too much stuff and some of it they end up forgetting about
Spoiler

(like a certain Tower seed)

. That said, it's good enough to read to completion, despite it's flaws. It's a bit of an author circle jerk, but it's not too egregious about it. <<less
