The Ability to Make Town!? ~Let’s Make a Japanese Town in Different World~

Description

One day, a train accident occurred in the morning. It was the start of everything. The people who were riding on it were invited into a white space. What awaited them there was an old man who claimed to be god.

The old man said:

—- I will transfer you guys to a different world.

—- I will give you a power to help you survive.

Several hundreds of cards facing down appeared in the mid air.

When a certain male student drew his card, what was written was [Spear Talent] [Great] [★★★]. When a female student drew her card, what was written was [Talent of Water System Magic] [Small] [★★]

And the card that a certain man drew…

What Fujiwara Nobuhide, a trivial temporary employee drew, was [The ability to make a town] [★★★★★★★★★★].

This is story of a certain man who has the ability to make a town in a different world. At first, it started as something like Edo from the Tokugawa Period. However, my goal is a modern city. I’ll do my best!

I don't usually write reviews, in fact, this is the first one and that's only to rant how a disappointing story this is and wasted a lot of my time.

The premise is that a few people accidentally died so a god allowed them to transfer in another world with an ability card which will enable them to survive. The story seems interesting at first as the MC got a good startup than the rest. He got a huge budget to build a town with good facilities like bathroom and... more>> sewage.

But it started to go downhill for me because of a lot things like:

Spoiler

1. MC is so obsessed with his camel to the point that it is creepy. I've seen many people obsessed with their pets but he is on a whole different level that it will make you cringe and feel disgusted. You may say that the author is just trying a comedy here but it is not even amusing.

2. There is no real character building here. Most of them are really bland and forgettable. Their back stories, specially the ones related to the MC are not explored in depth so you can't sympathize with them.

3. There is no world building because whenever the MC needs anything, he just rely on the online shop to buy it then trade to the merchants of that continent. Such in the case of the sweets and spices, he resorts to buying the refined products on the shop rather than buying and cultivating the seeds. If he does so, he could have given people jobs through farming or building factories that process the crops into a refined product. In that way, he can build better relationship with his people instead of pampering and spoon feeding. He spoils them so much only to be betrayed later.

4. Because he does not cultivates the crops, it gives others reason to suspect where the spices are coming from, even causing them to be greedy.

5. The money used on the online shop disappears from that world therefore causing inflation. The author could have made it so that goods produced/acquired by the town can be sold on that shop if the MC wants to earn gold for his town upgrade. The inflation can cause the collapse of other nations economy which can lead to suffering of the citizens (mainly commoners).

6. Most of the japanese people sent to the other world, who has a rather good card, feels like they need to be the savior of that world. With the same goal of liberating people and eliminating oppression of the beastmen, they declared war with each other's territories, thus, causing most of the casualties themselves. In truth, it is peaceful before their arrival because the church ordered ceasefire and forbid wars. So you can say that they themselves caused the chaos in that continent.

7. MC has been mayor of his town for 6 years but nothing really eventful happens. Except for a 2 or 3 one-sided battles with the Sandra Kingdom, all he does is trading and banquet. The town hasn't really progressed much. While another japanese who got the card "become a lord" has been developing his territory, manufacturing commodities like paper, improving public health and hygiene, re-inventing electricity, and training an army. His territory eventually become a kingdom. When he first arrived, he is only a highschool boy who transmigrated to a dead lord's body but he has achieved much by just relying on stored knowledge. While the MC is an adult and even has accessed to books from the modern world which he can use to further speedily improve his territory.

8. When the MC moved to the north and bought a territory there, it was still uneventful. The only reason people migrate to his territory is because he planted potatoes and that's it. Not because he's constructing roads and bridges, building houses, recruiting armies or merchants flocking to his territory for business. That was ONLY it for 3 years while another japanese has invented gunpowder and cannons. They conquered countries to unify the continent, while the MC is holed up in his territory waiting for his money to pile so that he could once again buy a town. The other reincarnator are much better than our MC.

9. MC hasn't really done anything to unify humans and beastmen. Even though they all live in the new town together, they are still separated like one side of the town is reserved for the beastmen and the other side for humans. WTF is that?! He just throw them all in one place together but still divided by a f***ing road. The beastmen held the position of his army. Humans are the patrol members. What the f***ing arrangement is that? MC forgot that beastmen betrayed him? He is planting seed of envy and hatred with that arrangement. How about making them mingle together? How about a law concerning human and beastmen rights ? He doesn't even make laws to keep the order. What the heck is the author thinking...

10. Don't expect legit romance here. For 9 or so years, he hasn't shown any interest on female, well maybe on the merchant girl but it didn't blossom into a love story. So he just decided to marry the female wolf simply because he is indebted to her saving his life and to the wolves for not betraying him. It felt very forced because to me, he seems to be more compatible with the merchant girl judging by the way they have their conversations and interactions so far, it seems more natural. I can't recall a single chapter mentioning about him flirting with the wolf girl or being affectionate of her. I guess it's because he's the first girl he met upon arriving in that world. There seems to be that rule among many stories that the first encounter will always be the love interest so the author had to make the story develop that way but failed in my opinion. The wolf girl doesn't have the qualities of a female lead and doesn't stand out at all.

[collapse]

Well, that is just some of it and I could say more but this is geeting too long.

Not trying to be judgemental but the author should just focus his energy on a new story. Maybe similar plot but different characters and direction because this novel for me has too many flaws that the cons outweights the pros by a million tons.

So, if you have expectations when you read this novel, I'm sorry but you will be disappointed only <<less

3/5 as of first arc in RAW. Maybe 3.5 if I’m feeling generous

Great concept, but fairly poor execution. Guy essentially gets simcity/civ power and can build a town. He’s given a starting amount of money and can initially only generate building/equipment from the Edo Era (getting modern era stuff costs 100x more $) and he has to “level up” his power (and eventually reach modern era buildings) by getting a certain population and cash. Sounds like a great city builder story right? Well, here’s where things start to fall apart. The story devote very little time to the development of his town. His entire city development process so far could probably fit into a single paragraph. It just goes, “he designs the town and activates his magic”, the end. There’s some stuff about the interaction between him and the people who live in the town and those who visit the town, but that’s it. And worse of all? (Minor spoilers)

Spoiler

It turns out that spices are extremely valuable in the other world so his entire method of making enough money is just summoning spices, trading it for coins, and then turning the coins into the cash needed for townbuilding. No attempt to create trade industries and enhance the skillset of the populace (so he can get tax $) whatsoever. He just clicks a couple of buttons, sell created goods for gold, and convert gold into cash. Which is a kinda crappy way to handle town development stories.

[collapse]
And in case you were hoping for some interesting defend-the-city type scenarios (major spoilers) :

Spoiler

So far, magic and physical combat isn’t too ridiculous in the other world. So he was able to wipe out a small invading army with just some cannons. As in repelling said army, killing lots of people, all without losing a SINGLE person on his side. So yeah, city combat doesn’t look to promising right now.

I will be blunt here: This novel is straight tr*sh. The MC doesn't think realistically. Instead he thinks like he's playing a city building game with unli-resources. He doesn't have a brain, and wastes resources in the long run, hell destroying economy by converting real currency for his personal currency, and buying modern stuff which costs 100 times the normal costs, like soda, and a truck. Yep, you heard that right.

It got enormous starting potential, then the MC ruins ALL. Oh god dang it author.

He got a weird fetish (lol).... more>> Oh god. Go read something like RTW or Genjitsushugisha instead. This novel is only for newbies in reading novel, or plain bored. <<less

-The MC and other people are taken to another world, with sword and magic and the likes. He and the others are told in advance that the other world would be dangerous. What is the priority of the protagonist when he arrives in the other world? Comfortable house with all convenient things, living a peaceful while making money. His safety was a secondary concern. A god send him to a dangerous other world and he act like everything would just be fine, no sense of caution toward the god who... more>> went through the trouble of giving them abilities to hel them survive.

-Ability to make a town. Only building from old time Edo should be available at the start, and then, advance to be able to make modern things. Yet he can already make a house with all modern appliances and buy all kind of modern necessities like furnitures, food and magazines for when he is bored. Even able to get firearms. It's just waaaaaay too convenient. Ability to make a town. No potential inhabitants nearby. The author was lazy with the ability. It feels more like some kind of online supermarket where you can buy anything from cooked food to buildings and even trucks.

Good idea, poor execution...

It looks like the MC act more like a proper adult in the following chapters, but I was seriously disappointed by the start when he set foot in the new world. The town building ability is already set, so it will remain a disappointment for the rest of the story (at least for me). <<less

starts off very good, but the author quickly drops the ball after the first volume.

the first volume could be said to be an introduce to the MC and his punishment for being too relaxed.

he was betrayed and lost everything in chapter 60ish and this was really due to this fault.

... more>> whats irritating is that he later went on to do the same thing over again in the north, but somehow everything is "okay" and nobody will betray him anymore because he has tanks.

yea sure author. I get that you don't want to write anymore so you gave us a crappy ending.

i guess the MC will probably be killed by his "subjects" later on and all his friends eaten for supper in the chapters that will never come out. <<less

The theme that I love the most, technology gap, modern vs ancient. It just like playing Civilization with cheats and leave the foolish AI behind, and of course bully them. Lol. But that's enough about it. The story is quite fast, and somehow the plot is promising.

Although the author wanted to be as detailed as possible, but I don

t know if the author forget or if it's the MC's lacking, but by building a town without making a foundation like set tax rate or building even a small army,... more>> it feels like, well building a house without foundation. It's a town, not a village, where everything is more complex. And the MC knows well the threat from another kingdom, but somewhat neglected it. If it's MC's fault, then I can hope to see improvement in the future, but if it's author who neglected it, well good bye one star or two..

[update] I like the MC now. He is growing as the time passes by.. He was naive, but thankfully he was cautious to point of almost being paranoid, but then he learn as he growing the city... <<less

Well the author has poor imaginative ability regarding character building but if I don't like a story I don't even rate it but I think it would improve as it goes by as long as it wont be translated like mtl I think it would do pretty well. As a fan of kingdom building I recommend people to read this but it may or may not be your cup of tea as it progress slow then time skips like DE.

Not bad I guess. But see many pointers of the protagonist in position as ignorant and idiot.

A bit of a rusher that prove fatal of his low sense of danger in a world where the term survival of the fittest is strong.

Either though he makes up what he get as his sensual peaceful principle from Japan is still lingering to him.

... more>> That wouldn't be enough as he would be challenge hurdle, obstacles and unforeseen changes.

The story is also circulating about how him would handle and reflected many of his carelessness and idiotic remarks. Mentally growth what he needs as even an adult, he's like a late teens who have low capacity of the surrounding movements.

Take it for granted or not try this. Sadly though the one translating this is a slowpoke site. You all knew how Rebirth Online World works. Way too slow in just updating once a month. I pray and hope some good samaritan would pick and pace this up. <<less

Simcity with a dash of social conflicts on backdrop of continential humanitarian (what do you call one for other species?) crisis. For fan of simcity like myself the snail-like pace is tolerable but it might bore out other readers. MC would probably grow old before reaching modern era at this pace. The story is more plot-driven rather than character-driven. MC was boring and his presence thin. Instead other side characters' behind-the-scence ploys and reactions were somewhat interesting.

Spoiler

As the plot thicken, MC had to run off building another town. Yet he still continued with fervor the racial segregating design that caused everything went belly up at the first place, keep expecting another coup d'etat.

Everyone please notice, if you would go other world and get similar cheat, to not do racial segregation. For it would surely result in ghettos and gangs (like what happening even in Sweden and elsewhere). Instead, try to build integrated communities.

What made me disappointed was that 50 or so chapter were only a prologue and just explaining his power and his resident. Some parts trading and war.

So don't expect a real story till chapter 50 something... Even a war is so shallow and the characters are like robots with boring characteristics.

After I finished the story I can understand both positive and negative reviews. Actually I like the story and never got board of it until the end.

Before reading this novel, you should know it's not about a smart MC and glorious country building story like "Release That Witch".

Our kind, naive and not so smart MC is reincarnated and gets a godly skill that allows him to create even a modern city and food easily. But all kids of problems starts afterward like increasing the population, management and development, betrayal of... more>> people and all kind of enemies especially because he is not the only reincarnated person.

The MC is not always on the top because of his skill and knowledge. He actually fails sometimes and is forced to retread or compromise but he also learns. <<less

It's a good story. I imagine that a lot of the bad reviews are because the translation really slowed down and then stopped abruptly at some point. Now though it seems to be getting translated at a pretty good speed. The story itself is pretty nice. It can seem slow and not particularly detailed at some times but it's not predictable or boring. They don't go the route of making all the victimized beast men super nice and all the humans evil either.

I might have given it a 5 star at first, but I think 3 star is enough after completing the story.

Pros:

  1. Translation is good.
  2. It is a good story about a guy who got a cheat ability to build a city in an unknown world.
  3. The story setting is good enough from the beginning.
  4. The MC's mental development and adjustment to the new world's rule is shown.
  5. There are times when the MC got frustrated and even retreated, so not like those overpowered MC who do everything with 1-click.
  6. A s**y Camel (>_<")
Cons:

  1. Story was finished too fast.
  2. Lots of undeveloped plots about other people who got transported with the MC
  3. The war and ambitions of few people remained unanswered.
  4. Ending was rushed in the last chapter.
  5. The city's development during those last years are totally missing and rushed.
  6. Aliens... (-_-)
*If you want to enjoy a light read for fun, then its a good novel. But if you are the type who has the curiosity to know every details of every plot and every sub-characters ending, then I would not recommend this novel.*

Thank You.

First of all, I would like to say some of these comments are horrible. They read a couple chapters and get bored of it. Another is straight up lying. Im talking about you Mr. C150 -- Author quit at ch 108.

The author really likes camels and sh*t LOL.

On another note this story slowly grows from how he builds the town to everyday lives of the towns people. The ending is sad for the first town around C55. Read the first 10 chapters and when the new towns people actually come..... more>> The story starts getting good.

new translator are not good. They block you from editing the website that you like to. Also, they are slow to release. <<less

As of raw Ch 108.

Its okay as a slow paced story goes, its just a pity. Many things make this story stand out from other Isekai stories, mostly the fact that the MC builds a town and stays there while the world around him reacts. Arguably one of the most OP MCs ever, any and all conflict revolve around him sitting in his town smiling and waving at the citizens from time to time and building defences strong enough to ignore the rest of the continent.

Spoiler

The MC acts like an as*xual JP MC who goes through motions to trick people into thinking he has humanity from time to time. He has three settings: Apathetic, Concerned, and Stoic. Although typically 100 chapters is only the beginning of an online web novel it feels too much and the author seems to have ended it at that point.

[collapse]

Spoiler

BTW MAJOR SPOILER ABOUT THE ROMANTIC SUBPLOT

If you were hoping for some nice romance or character development to help you swallow the not-quite city building just note that the MC (after joking about the camel) eventaully marries a single girl as of one of the last chapters in an 'arranged marriage' type situation. Poor girl didn't even get any romancing or the MC displaying any sort of affection for her, but at least she definitely liked him...

Just boringly marries her after everyone else said 'your getting too old not to have an heir' it was a bit of a disappointment. As the character interactions were some of the things that I was looking forward too.

[collapse]

This story very much deserves the 'slow af paced' warning. There are quite a few moments where I think the author had some interesting ideas to take the isekai setting, but other sections turned into a drag. <<less

The premise is good, OP but not in the usual way. Have a unique story, at least not followimg too much usual trope.

But, the story telling is bad, also the author just doesn't knew which part is needed to be explained and which one is not. The author seems like he have a strange fetish and put a hint on the story.

When the author explain about excrement and shitting, it took a lot of paragraph. Yet, when explaining the world, the farming or management progress, it just goes time skip.

i honestly regret spending my time reading this series. I have not been so annoyed at an author that the ending is so un-relatable and s*upid that I reallly wanted to hit something (or someone) the story was below average throughout the entire length and the ending just honestly makes me feel cheated. dont read this. The author apparently gave up (or no longer had backing to complete) the story. It was pretty accelerated near the end but still had throwaway chapters (presumably to showcase characters and stories they came up with but never got to). They wrapped it with how I imagine they figured the end-game of their story would have gotten to as told in history books. Truly odd. But I guess it's better to do that over just leaving it off in the middle?

Terrible. I won't bother going into details as all of the above reviews (that rate it 1 or 2 stars) say what I'm thinking already.

Off topic, but anyone else notice that A LOT of the reviews giving it 4 or 5 stars seem to have the same kind of typos and same issues with English grammar? Like... EXACTLY the same types of grammar issues.... Seems like a really big coincidence... Just saying..

I fairly liked the novel. It's kind of a silly story and either you like or hate it.

3 stars mainly because of the pacing (and some plot holes).

On one hand, at least for me something like the first 50 chapter were only a prologue. On the other hand the last 10 chapters are rushing to close the story up and the last chapter overshoots it's target.
