This novel has one of the most evil protagonists ever - to the point where you get surprised when he doesn't immediately brutally butcher random little girl that accidentally bumped into him.

Unfortunately, he is allergic to any attachments and connections and unable to grow up - which means the novel gets repetitive and boring.

On the plus size, the novel has a very interesting world with various Insects being the basis of all cultivation.

Don't read this yet if you still want to enjoy the cliche novel you are enjoying right now. Just read this if you are tired of all that novel about a rich protagonist who cares so much about face, harem story of a rich young master or cultivation adventure from weak to strong. Because after you read this all that kind of Chinese is just tr*sh and will not enjoy reading it again.

This is by far the best Chinese or Korean novel I've read so far. The twists and turns are hard to predict, and that's great. The main difference is the main character. He's wildly different from your typical stoic, OP badass who can never fail. This guy is not incompetent from the get-go. He's not a h**ny harem dork. He's not a teenage or early 20s loser (not really). Oh, and he's not a good guy. He'll sacrifice anything and anyone in his search for power, including his own skin.... more>> He's both the best and worst part of the story.

The biggest difference in terms of plot is that the MC is not infallible. In fact, this book almost takes it too far in the other direction. He fails all the time. It's kind of annoying, actually. There are major plot arcs, and during these arcs he accumulates lots of small successes, but at the climax of each arc he almost always either fails badly, or succeeds by the skin of his teeth while losing even more than he gains. It does make for great tension, but after a while it would be nice to see just one or two epic successes sprinkled among all the epic failures. This is supposed to be a rousing adventure, not a rambling tragedy. The author even stated outright that if it would be true to the story, he's willing to kill off the MC and figure out where to go from there. And, unfortunately, sometimes the massive failures are due to a bout of idiocy. He's usually pretty calm and collected, but for some reason every now and then he gets hit with the derp-hammer for the sake of plot when everyone around him (and the reader) is going "Don't do that, you colossal ninny!" EDIT:
Spoiler

There was actually an in-story reason even for that! It was intentional.

[collapse]

The worldbuilding for this story is top notch. I won't go into detail here; you have to experience it. The side characters all have depth, both male and (some) female. The antagonists grow along with the (evil) protagonist. One interesting thing is that the so-called righteous-path cultivators are just as scheming and backstabbing as the demonic-path ones, but they try to cloak it in a veneer of civility. There are VERY few actual good guys, and they're all relatively minor side characters.

One problem I do have with this is information. Despite very careful information control, sometimes characters have info that they have no way of gaining. For example, party X learns info A while party Y learns info B, and when they share this info they magically glean info C, which is that A and B are about the same person. Info C is far more valuable than A or B, and only one person in existence knows that, so how could X and Y glean this info? Similarly, in one case person Z learned info D... and then the next scene new about A through I without any additional sources of information. If information is so easy to glean when plot demands, then why is so much of the plot dedicated to keeping information safe and yet NONE is dedicated to other characters actually piercing this infosec?

On the flip side, the characters are amazing. Protagonists and antagonists switch places readily. Today's enemy becomes tomorrow's ally and next week's enemy again. Everyone is using everyone else. This is why info security is so important, and why the above bothers me so much. But the characterization is great.

Anyway, I'm only about half of the way through this, and what I've read so far I'd recommend very highly. I hope that the rest of the story can maintain this level of quality. <<less

Our MC FY isn't a kind Hero nor he is a bloodthirsty Demon. Whole GU world may call FY evil but he is not evil, he is just a benefit oriented human (which is btw more dangerous than any insidious Demon) . Doing everything logically. Calculating every move of enemies.

GU world has miraculous lifeforms known as GU (basically bugs/worms with power). They are basically vitality of whole GU world. There are GUs capable enough of controlling fate and destiny. They can grant tremendous power to their weilders. People that cultivates... more>> them are known as GU master. Our MC is also a gu master that dies and get transported back in time with the help of spring and autumn cicada GU.

But what makes this novel different from others is firstly GU world's background, which is rich and interesting. HUMAN ANCESTOR, first human whose legends are known throughout the GU world. Story unveils the background of world through legends and myths of human ancestor. And tbh the story of Human Ancestor is pretty solid with great depth.

Secondly, great side characters and antagonist. Each and every single one of them is calculative and scheming. It is like whole GU world is a big chess board and everyone is a pawn or a bigger pawn except some, who are playing this game from shadows. Our MC is also a pawn (until the end of volume 5).

Thirdly, our MC which is one of the most logical MC I have ever seen in a Chinese Webnovel. Calm, calculative, intelligent, apathetic, scheming etcetera.

The best thing about this novel is mysteries and scheming. Everything is connected like a Web without any inconsistencies. Lots of Wow moments.

Starting of volume 3, 4 and 5 is little bit boring but end of each volume is more than enough to compensate. This novel has 6 volumes in total and every volume ends with a BIG BANG.

Give it a try.

If the world was as dangerous and as brutal as the author made it seem with the story set on a clan that truly cared so much for the future of said clan, the MC

Spoiler

would have had his neck snapped in chapter 52 as there was already enough evidence pointing towards him being an ally-killer in the future.

[collapse]

Major Gripes:

The author took "capacity" and claimed it was "talent" when in reality, it actually would be considered "potential" because the type of bug (Cultivating tool) you have and amount of primeval stones (Gu recovery item) you have play a more vital role in cultivation than the amount of Gu you happen to be able to store [aka "talent"] at one time (Because being able to use currency aka primeval stones to recover Gu makes the size of your capacity irrelevant. Oh and can you say PAY TO WIN?! LMAO).

The MC's (aka Edgelord) ultimate goal apparently is to gain immortality... But... For what? Gaining immortality is cool and all, but you have to do something with it. Its already established at this point in the story that the MC intends to rule through fear and raise a new demonic sect, which would most likely be filled with more baddies. But. Then. What? Basically all I got from this so far is that he'll have to watch his back for the rest of his life because he decided to become immortal while leading an evil sect with a bunch of evil baddies who will likely give birth to backstabbers.

This gripe may be unreasonable, but it bugged me nonetheless.

And the third one I want to talk about is... That the author is so desperate to make Mr. Edgelord the uber clever boi, that he drags the intelligence of every other character down while reducing their capability of thought and foresight to near zero.

Like I said in the beginning

Spoiler

Chapter 52. He should have been killed on the spot.

  1. Extorting his classmates should have lead to an investigation for why he is doing that, which would lead to the Academy Elder knowing that Mr. Edgelord has no backing, no friends, and a will to hinder/hurt his fellow clan members.
  2. Not only killing, but mincing up a person backed by a powerful faction in the clan should have been a giant ass red flag for the old geezers, alerting them to how bloodthirsty and brutal he was.
  3. Severely injuring the two guards should have been the final straw letting them know that it doesn't matter if people work for the clan or not. Mr. Edgelord will kill them all and most likely become an ally-killer on the battlefield if it suits his needs.

All of this indicated that he would be a detriment to the clan and what did the Academy Elder do? Absolutely f*cking nothing "bEcAuSe tHe rUlEs aRe iMpOrTaNt!"

Damn the rules and damn your pride. Do you care about the good of your clan or not? Because if he is this arrogant with you, do you think he won't be arrogant to every other clan or powerhouse in the country??? What do you think is gonna happen when he inevitably pisses off the wrong people in the future???

[collapse]

The characters other than Mr. Edgelord never think beyond the current situation unless it serves as plot armor for the MC.

Because f*ck foresight right? <<less

This novel is the best I have ever read. I always searched for a story where the MC was merciless but like really merciless: Not having cliché principles like not fighting against women, not killing, always having a straight character. These so called ruthless MC always end up saving the pretty woman, the city, the country, the planet... Here you have a real egoist man. He will do anything and I mean anything as long as he reaches his ends. Sometimes his actions are chilling even for an admirer of... more>> Xianxia novels like me. The way he uses the rules of the society against the men in power is just awesome.

Edit : I finally finished it and my only complain is that it has been banned. It is in the final steps of the story and you have a cliffanger. Just for that I wish the Chinese government could be overthrown. Seriously, there should be a petition for lifting the ban on this masterpiece. <<less

I felt compelled to write my current thoughts on this (@ch152).

I've been enjoying this novel, it's not bad and the protagonist is pretty unique. The events and the protagonist's control of the situation are what I've found to be the most entertaining aspects.

What I DON'T enjoy, and what's been surfacing more (and what I think people are dropping 5-stars at, more because he's unique than because it's genuinely a good character ultimately) is his absolute, utter, complete detachment from humans. I found it interesting at first, because he was disillusioned,... more>> seeing the societal system and its methods of control and being able to maneuver around them for his own benefits. I didn't mind his detachment initially because it let him avoid being manipulated, but it's quickly getting to the point now that it seems like he's 100% anti-social, not unsocial (which just means not very communicative with others) but anti-social, where he's specifically against society itself and then the furthest point where he essentially doesn't even view himself as being human. Once it gets to a certain point, it really starts to give the impression that he will be an eternal loner with no real connections to any other humans or sentient lifeforms- and that is the crux of my problem. Excessive cruelty and disregard for the lives of others can be done right, IMO, but once it's absolute, it ceases to have meaning. What is he gaining power for? When he stands at the apex, utterly alone and desolate from other life which he's disinterested in, what is waiting for him? I really don't see anything there except an eternity of solitude and boredom.

Something someone else mentioned which I quite agree with: He's NOT an Anti-Hero, this protagonist is absolutely a villain and quite possibly has no redeeming character traits at all.

One final thing to add, it's ironic but once I thought of it, I realized the protagonist is essentially a one-dimensional (two-dimensional, flat, whatever) character. His only real traits are evil and being self-serving, he has essentially NOTHING ELSE. So many people are praising his character but ultimately it's just because he's unique, not because he's actually a good character. <<less

The MC is not a hero or an anti-hero, he is vilain with no bottom line to get what he want, mostly power. If you want a different novel with a vilain no harem, no compromise because someone is kind to him, only useful pawn or dead usless enemy/pawn, no frendship. The story of a SMART LONER VILAIN who use people and kill peoples without compassion.

I stopped reading when it was so heartbreaking how much he is coldhearted. I may read it again in the futur cause it's still a... more>> good read but for now I can't cheer for him.

Honestly, I've been picking novels to read cautiously after reading all those famous novels. Most of them are just garbage. That's why I can say this is probably the best CN novel out there - there is no romance, no fortuitous encounters, and MC is an extremely cunning character who focuses on his goals.

This novel is quite unique. If it is compared to other CN novels, there are a lot of uncommon situations. Something like people enjoying monkey brains, or an arrogant girl being eaten by a bear in a... more>> ritual.

Scheming everywhere, acting skills at the max level. What about morality? There is nothing like that here, it's about benefits bro.

The MC is intelligent, it's indeed true. But the side characters are cunning as hell too. Also, everything is based on hardworking and rationality. Luck just doesn't exist in this world - at least for our MC.

Everything is excellent about Reverend Insanity (including the new translation), I bet if you liked WMW you'll like this one too. But if there is something people find slightly disappointing about RI, it would be the cultivation system. The characters get stronger using Gu worms (essences of heaven and earth that can assume different forms), which can be considered as external power. So if they lose the Gu Worms, regardless of their cultivation level, they are just powerless. This rule only works at the mortal realm though.

This novel is definitely not a cliche. The MC is kinda Leylin from WMW but without the AI Chip. That's why the former deductions and plans can fail sometimes while the latter is basically a nasa machine that can calculate all outcomes and possibilities in battle. <<less

To be honest this novel is spectacular. If not for a few things that bug me it would be one of my favourite novels of this genre. Yes some of most of the MC actions are hard to swallow but I just read it for the entertainment. I was drawn to a few characters but they didn't end up too well tbh. But that's what makes a novel great doesn't it. Novels of this genre emphasise absolute power yet the MC who are always underdog have to rely on plot... more>> armor to win every time. speaking of plot armor. I'm not going to lie the plot armor in this novel is very thick. However it only happens in some instances. For example
Spoiler
[collapse]
whenever he is at his wits end. He self destructs and restarts at a checkpoint. I utterly despise plot armor that is that thick. I mean he is literally invincible due to this. How can he lose? He actually got absolutely destroyed by bai Ning bing and tie ruo a few times. And he had to rely on his checkpoint save to defeat them. This greatly disappointed me. Why? Because this novel is absolutely fantastic and it didn't need some dbz plot armor. Ah it frustrates me to think that people actually outsmart him but he relies on his checkpoint to act like he figured it out and then outdo them. Tsk tsk honestly it dissapoints me however it only happens when he actually loses and admits defeat. So atleast I can gain some closure knowing that he lost and got outsmarted.

Other than that. One other thing that I utterly despise. And I'm sure everyone else does is the cultivation system. Like the ranks are good and all. However the absolutely mind boggling thing is that you need some supernatural worms to use supernatural powers. Like wtf you eat a worm and have to feed it to rely on it's powers. And without that work your just a normal human. Lmao what a joke. The worms die and that person can't use that power anymore. It gets ridiculous later on when you hear dragon gu and Phoenix gu. Like wtf is that supposed to look like. A gigantic worm that looks like a dragon? Lmao it seems ridiculous that they have to implant worms in their body to gain these powers. And to think that these worms have absolutely no intelligence despite being so powerful. Especially the cheat worms such as time gu and life and death gu. Ridiculously s*upid.

Other than the very thick plot armor instances and the horrible power system. This novel is actually fantastic. Regarding schemes and character interactions it's splendid. Also the MC absolutely abuses his rebirth cheat. Unlike other characters who are afraid of affecting reality. This man destroys and takes everything for himself. I really like the power struggles in this novel. It shows what it takes to get power. For example to ascend to a throne many other novels just say that they recruit people. But why do they recruit people when their is no battling? This novel goes into detail why people recruit and the difference in recruiting tr*sh and geniuses. Honestly I'd say it has to be a 4. Because the plot armor doesn't appear to save him from every enemy and I can actually cope with the gu battle styles. You get use to it tbh. Also I don't recommend this novel if you want a goody gooody. This guy is a last nod villain. <<less

A refreshing break from myriad sh*t Xianxia novels.

This isn't a typical Xianxia, repackaging the same old formula with different names. The MC is truly evil, and he acts the way you'd expect a truly evil MC to act. He's most similar to the MC of Warlock of the Magus World in his ruthlessness.

Moreover, the world does not miraculously bend to the MC's will. If he desperately needs one specific magical treasure to achieve a goal, he doesn't just stumble upon it because of plot armor; he obtains it himself. Luck... more>> does not suck the MC's d*ck just because he's the MC, which is, sadly, almost unheard of in this genre.

The MC's brother, a foil to the MC, demonstrates perfectly what a cliched webnovel would do. By subverting expectations in later scenes which I won't elaborate on due to spoilers, the author masterfully separates this gem from any generic Xianxia. <<less

Great novel, definitely publish worthy. I just wrote this review because the two reviews before me complaining about "useless information." Yeah, sorry dude, gotta make some shallow brain dead bread and butter cultivation novel instead. Sorry for adding detailed information to have a more fleshed out universe... Lotr is also awful too haha!!

I think that adding the detail that the author gives is one of the reasons why I like it. A more slow paced novel, that seems very realistic. The entire universe is very well made, and it gives... more>> a lot more world building than your average Chinese cultivation novel. Amazing read, although of course, it's not with its flaws, but that is with every book. <<less

Amazing novel. It is the best I've ever read. I love how the MC is evil and unpredictable making him super unique. The power system itself is the most well developed power system I've seen. The only downside I would say is that because there are over 2300 chapters, there are inevitably a good number of fillers. However, there's not an unbelievable amount of fillers like in the naruto anime where over half of the episodes are useless. For its length, the amount of fillers is reasonable, and a lot... more>> of the fillers are cool short stories which are enjoyable to read. <<less

This novel can affect your personality if you binge read it. Be warned!

Its so well written it really gets you into the mind of the MC, who is unfortunately for me a psycopath-mass mu*derer, which I dont actually like. This is also the reason I droped the novel after 700 chapters.

That being said, although I dont like the character of the MC, I can in no way deny how amazing this novel is. Definetely, the best webnovel i've read amongst more than 200... But only speaking quality-wise. LOTM is a... more>> novel that also comes close to this novel quality-wise.

Oh man, did I just stumble into the gu world?

Yeah, that's the kind of delusion I had for some time, reading this novel constantly, unaware of my surroundings.

So, to say the points :

1. World : World building is dope. This world has boundaries, nothing is out of order. Even so, it is vast... hmm, better explain it as "enormous, diverse, contains enormous secrets deep within, yet systematic and constant" (kind of like our world)

Spoiler

have a desert continent, a grassland continent, a sea continent, a mountain continent, a continent with evolved customs and lifestyle.

[collapse]

2. Protagonist : Protagonist is a real and the main attraction of the novel. He is a realist without useless anticipations and plenty of real life experience. His main power is his experience and nature, his talent is just sub-par.

Doesn't leave his fate to luck or any other variable. Takes control of the situation by effecting the surroundings psychologically or with his strength.

He isn't ruthless or heartless or something.

He is just a simple and calm businessman with a different view on the concept of "Life". Life of people, life of livestock, even the life of a grass-blade doing its best to grow are all the same to him.

He has experienced so much life that the only goal left, worth persuing is "eternal life" (I mean to say, there's a reason for his ultimate goal being eternal life and getting stronger)

Spoiler

The one he loved truly in his previous life, isn't even gonna be born for hundreds of years.

[collapse]

He has a very human like personality, he mess up sometimes due to lack of information or because of his shitty luck or other more powerful foes. Still he makes the best decision in those situations and never gets careless.

(Did you see a movie "the collector"? His protag is kinda same in the dicision making department, not in a philosophical sense)

Spoiler

in a competition with a very weak opponent, he didn't overly rely on his knowledge and ability but on the psychological state of the opponent and used that to defeat him. As it turned out later, the opponent could win if fang yuan didn't do that.

[collapse]

I could go on and on about the protag - knows himself well (knows his strengths and limitations), 'uses' the social conventions as a tool to gain powers, doesn't make time consuming decisions (focus on cause and effect)

At last, he is a businessman, and treats everything as business : love, hate, compassion, money, life, freedom, his own life, you name it.

3. Characters : the characters are fleshed out so well, it feels like they should be taken as a protagonist in some side-story, every single character.

Every character has a unique personality, every one is smart, they all have some goals, things that make them 3d.

The actions and decisions of the characters complements their life experiences and personality, perfectly.

Spoiler

gu yue bo, fang Zheng, bai Ning Bing, heavenly court members, dong fang chang fan, every rank 9 being, everyone!

[collapse]

4. Philosophy : Yeah, there's a ton of philosophy things in there, a whole lot of it.

And not the baseless ones, like friends are there to share burden... blah blah. (common in LN's)

There's philosophy on love, on wisdom, on life, on hope, on freedom, on reputation, on every major emotion.

Heck, there's even philosophy on lifespan, fate, time, steps and other conceptual things.

Spoiler

Time changed love

Rulesand restrictions deprive those who don't understand them off light

lifespan is always either given freely by heaven or have to be traded with another.

steps will always form in the difficult land when you walk, you can be followed by others, you can also follow other's,

[collapse]

The philosophy is delivered mostly by "Ren-zu", a Bible of that world. A little by the interactions of "gu"

............................................

There's a lot more that can be said, but I guess it's enough of praising. There's some plot holes (flaws) as well but they are minimal and imperceptive by most.

The flaws are understandable considering it's not an organisational project but an individual. <<less

This novel reveals some fundamental concepts of morality and amorality. It makes me curious why people like Fang Yuan, as an amoral person living in a world where strength matters is seen as a threat to society. Much more if he's in the modern world. The closest person who can feel that threat is Bai Ning Bing

What is amoral? those are people who don't give a sh*t or feel indifference towards moral norms, they're unethical and individualist. He makes computations of benefit for himself and himself only. He's also a... more>> profound schemer who plans way ahead from you, who never bet his life on luck, who knows when to retreat during dire times and a person who hates classism.
Sounds like an evil person, yes and he has another name, Demon.

Even in a world where the strong eats the weak and strong people are the law, humans in the Gu world still value morals, the good which is righteous and the bad which is demonic. They grow up being taught about moral education, clan values and ethics, a society who taught normalized behavior. In a world where killing is a norm, of course they also do immoral acts. What if someone like the MC, an amoral person who's a demonic cultivator comes in the scene? they will feel threatened because of the person's indifference and will associate him as bad... reason why he was hunted by the so called righteous people. At the moment, for the sake of benefits for the greater purpose which is immortality, he can be a 'righteous person' in the eyes of others.

He is like an outsider who have different beliefs and principles that sets him apart from the rest, a person who disregard the opinion of majority just like how he used to internally mock Fang Zheng's naivety. It's like he sees the world in the 3rd person's point of view/perspective. The society is like in the inside of an illusion of morality and immorality to survive and an amoral person outside of it is the threat to that illusion.

In modern world, people called them psychopaths/sociopaths and associate them for having Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD).

In the previous comments, there's no sexism in the novel is just that the female antagonists appeared late, also reversed plot armor haters... see yourself out <--

Anyways, I have learned alot in reading this novel, salute to the author for portraying well the greyness of morality, classism and how an amoral person would be in a cultivation world setting. We're so close to the end but yet so far.. still hoping for CCP to uplift the ban tho *fingers-crossed* <<less

All the stars that I gave it are because the title rings true, the MC is fully insane. And the fandom behind this novel is crazier than the one before. It's a bland novel if not for the occasional gore, casual acts of mass mu*der and just evilness; other than that, the plot in itself is just: "I must kill X to achieve Y cultivation." Wouldn't recommend it, but if you have got a raging hate toward humanity, then go ahead.
