The Rice Pot Next Door is a fun romance. There are some clichés but if the whole plot is nothing really original I had a nice time reading it. The characters are likable and a bit crazy. They even made me laugh (and I don't often laugh while reading).

This is a novel to read when the weather is gray, when you're tired and you don't want any complicated story.

Extremely fluffy and hilarious. I was laughing almost every chapter. Both ML and FL were perfectly likable and memorable characters, and the story was grounded enough in reality to not seem too fantastic while still having enough twists and turns to be entertaining. Re-read it the second time and the reading experience was still enjoyable. Highly recommend this novel.

MC has high EQ ?, 2nd ML directly tells her she wants to date her, few days later he invites her to dinner and when she gets there she wonders what his motive is.. Really???

Also convenient misunderstanding about how ML is gay, bleh can the writer not find other reasons to prolong the novel?

The progress is already slowed down to a crawl due to ret*rded misunderstandings but when things nearly happen a random waiter decides to bump into them to further delay the story.. So f*cking cheap.

Big misunderstandings are fine... more>> as long as they are fixed in a reasonable amount of time but in this novel the misunderstandings don't get fixed till the last few chapters.. Holy f*ck man. MC & ML are both low iq & low eq ret*rds, this is by far one of the most frustrating novels to read, basically nothing happens for 99% of the novel. If you want romance, stay FAR away from this <<less

This novel is hilarious seriously idk how much I've laughed while reading it! The ML is just pure entertainment, and I really like the FL and her motto more than her "I sell car not myself" seriously this is one kind of a novel

At it’s base this is a neighbors to lovers romance. However, the zany and ridiculous antics of our lead characters and the wacky contrived initial interactions set up a tone that I really enjoyed. Its not a realistic romance and a lot of the side characters are weakly executed. Even the leads have some moments where their actions aren't adequately supported by their characterization. Yet it all ends up feeling strangely organic for this story world. If you want a good laugh, a bickering friendship and a fun romance Id... more>> recommend giving this a shot. <<less

Reading this story is irritating. At first I thought it was the author's translation experience that was the problem but it becomes apparent by chapters 9 & 10 that the story is following something like a checklist. Rather than events occurring naturally and flowing due to the behavior and personality of the characters, the characters are forced into a situation and you get to read about it from a middle school newspaper club member who happened to be there.

First of all, the translator did a great job. Loved reading each chapter and her comments. The story is just great; I loved both the MC and ML. There is no serious villain and the main hindrance to their love story is that one has a vivid imagination and a friend with similar imagination while the ML is clueless about emotional things. But once they are clear, it is a smooth sail.

I have to say, the portrayal of the friendship between the two women felt very real and familiar to me, in a way I don’t think I’ve seen before in a cn. They hang out, get into trouble, sass each other, give each other bad advice, and are generally warm and supportive to one another.

There’s other good and bad stuff in this novel that other reviews have touched on, so you can probably deduce if you’d like this or not. It’s silly and fluffy, but it’s also very sincere and... more>> not mean. <<less

This was a lovely romance novel~!

Like most MLs out there, the ML in this novel is also a bit of the iceberg/tsundere type, but that's what makes the ML so sweet right? While the MC, thank goodness, is a strong-willed and smart lady who knows relatively well what she wants from her life. With a high IQ and EQ, the MC is at the top of the sales department which makes her vastly different from other female MCs who always seem flustered when it comes to the topic of love... more>> and intimate contact. This female MC is experienced in life and knows what to expect in relationships so there are little to none of those annoying scenes where the female MCs are embarrassed, flustered, gawking, shocked into silence, etc. Nonsense going on.

The ending is naturally a very satisfying HE, so of course I highly recommend this story! <<less

This is such a good read. It's nothing exciting and heart pumping so don't expect for those. It's more like a chill, slice of life read. The plot is pretty consistent although there are no ground breaking plot twist or conflict. It's very much a novel with a touch of realism.

Spoiler

i like how the MC and ML interacts and it's so cute how the gender bias is reversed. Lol. The ML is the wifey. I also like how the MC is not wishy washy and doesn't get upstreamed or sidetracked by the supporting lead.[

It's pretty interesting how the MC is also affected by "midlife crisis" (although she's only 28) because I feel like almost everyone suffers thru that. You do your work your entire life and somehow, something happens and snaps you out of your bubble and you think what you're doing is what you really want.

[collapse]

As much as I live for CN with interesting plot twists and turns and heart pumping action, I dont mind reading this type of genre at all. It manages to be mellow without being boring at all. <<less

It's one of the most enjoyable modern time C-fiction I've read, considering my C novel preference which is fantasy ancient-time novels.

The story was fun and had clear objectives dan narration. The story telly is perfectly timed, neither too slow or fast. And the best part, there's no scene that felt like a filler in the story development.

I think the author tend to make her main female characters to be rather dense and gullible. It's a tricky character to write because they are easily hated (I have a fair numbers of... more>> them in my blacklist ?). Somehow, ricepot author can develop such character nicely. It's suitable with her storytelling and story ideas.

Overall, this novel is worth the time. Try reading it for a few first chapters, since it's really cringy on chapter 1, but it's okay after that.

Happy reading! <<less

For some reason the bad reviews showed up first (probably written more recently) and I almost didn't read this novel. This novel is good. There is the main story with the main FL and ML and there is the side story with the friend of FL and brother of ML. When I read one of the review, I thought that ML roofies the FL and she still forgives him. But that is not the case! She almost gets r*ped by the second ML (or the love rival). But decides to... more>> let him go as she doesn't want to go up against his powerful family (and she doesn't have proof as she is not affected by roofie. The ML is very nice, especially after he realizes that he loves FL.

The novel is about a Genius ML and an intelligent (not genius level) FL. As is usual the genius is high on IQ but low on EQ. FL on the other hand mistakes him to be Gay, so lets her guard down and both of them end up falling in love with each other. There are some really hilarious scenes. I don't know why someone wrote that FL is arrogant. She is not (unless I missed something). I really liked the brother of ML a lot. That side story was fun to read too. <<less

If you're looking for fluffy romance you're in the wrong place imho.

The female MC is not a very nice person. She's also very naive in all the wrong ways and not just a little bit s*upid. All in all it makes for one seriously unfluffy read.

If you're looking for drama that doesn't always follow common sense or logic, you're spot on.

Maybe I should persist and read further, but at this point I am unable to. Maybe I picked the wrong kind of novel. Maybe I shouldn't read anything that's 'josei'. No, that's not right, I have read a lot of novels described as fluffy, and I could finish them.

The FL is too unlikeable, she is mannerless, thoughtless, often rude and brash, and on personal level, untidy, unhygienic (she shared her apartment with c*ckroaches), and she is too incompetent when compared to the ML.

I know it is a common trope of... more>> daydream novels that ML is described to be ideal, especially in wealth, status, and intelligence, but it doesn't mean the MC needs to be made too inferior, right?

That is the biggest issue, but in general, the story is sort of flat and uneventful, the "events" are too forced and illogical even for the standard of daydream novels. I like Jiu Xiao Qi, but her novels are always like this. I like Tian Qi, I like Tan Lingyin, they are intelligent and unique, but I can't say the same for the MC here.

The translation though, awesome! <<less

Love this fluffy and sweet story. The ML is more like female characters.. Clingy, homey, good chef with Super IQ yet 0 or 100 EQ while FL is fun, blunt, professional and beautiful with low IQ but high EQ. Many hilarious moments and sweet interactions.. Must read for doses of sweets.

Strong FL without being overpowering or proud. She is clear on her strength and weaknesses and is not afraid to admit to them. She's pretty but not rich and sells cars, but relies on her persuasion and sales techniques rather than beauty when making sales. Meanwhile, ML is a genius in his field and also great at cooking, which is what initially attracted FL (his food, that is). They got along over ML feeding FL good food despite their slight initial misunderstanding. ML is a tad bit unethical when it... more>> comes to his hacking, and also a little black bellied but he never truly bullies FL and instead looks out for her many times. He's a little like an eccentric professor who happens to be born in a rich family. Their relationship has a few misunderstandings here and there but it was built slowly and steadily over a period of interactions, which was pretty cute. Angst was minimal to none and overall this novel is just a sweet treat. Side couple is an idiot and I love them too. <<less

This was a really good story! It was warm and refreshing. I really like CNovels like this, which focus on sweet, simpler relationships in modern times.

My biggest issue with the story was:

Spoiler

The novel has a long arc where the FL incorrectly believes that the ML is gay. Although this allowed FL to get closer to ML, I feel like it was stretched out and a bit frustrating.

[collapse]

Some other issues I had with the novel were:

Spoiler

The love rival arc also went on for a long time. 2ndML really hung around for too long lol. Also, it did feel like there was some superficial drama inserted to make the story longer, such as when FL started thinking she wanted to move back to her hometown, or when 2ndML tried to drug and r*pe her (although being totally normal otherwise??- the author really didn't set the story up for his character suddenly turning so dark)

[collapse]

Other than that, though, it was good! <<less

To be honest, the overall quality is barely satisfactory but it is still passable. Before anything else can I just say something about CN novel's synopsis??? ISTG every CN novel's synopsis always always mislead me. It gives off either a weird first impression or an unappealing one. Like this one. This is also one of the reasons why I have to read reviews just to have few glimpses of what to expect. I really hope someone leaves off a decent fan written synopsis out there so we can have a... more>> better impression of CN novels.

Here's my unsolicited version of a sneak peak/synopsis: (my overall feelings about the novel may or may not have affected how I wrote this but here you go)

Spoiler

[The term 'ricepot' mainly focuses on the fact that Lan Shan have a big appetite and likes the rice in Qiao Feng's house. Literally. It is also related to how she more or less freeloads on him (he doesn't mind and does it voluntarily feeling satisfaction every time).]

Lan Shan is a salesperson working under car dealership. Meanwhile, Qiao Feng is a high IQ but low EQ person working as a professor in a university. This two person met by chance and due to a misunderstanding on Lan Shang's side Qiao Feng had a bad impression on her that led to series of misfortune (just a bit).

As if that is not enough, Lan Shang once again had another misunderstanding about Qiao Feng that led her to act freely (without being on guard) with him. Because of her actions, Qiao Feng also had a misunderstanding on her. These misunderstandings, however, made them closer and build a deeper foundation in their relationship.

Find out how they resolve these misunderstandings and how they deal with their surging emotions towards each other. Lol.

[collapse]

Back to my review, if I were to be blunt, the start didn't really entice me but the ratings kind of kept me curious so I decided to stay. It was boring for the first part but I guess around chapter 20-30 I saw its charm for being simple. I rarely read slice of life novels bec I tend to be picky about it but this one is simple and light just enough to keep me going. It does have an inferior sense of drama but I like the main couple's chemistry, banters, and the development of their relationship.

My thoughts about the main couple:

Lan Shan is a blunt person. Professional in terms of work. Likable as a character. I like her principles in terms of work. She's also confident in her looks and is aware of how it affects the people around her but also knows not to abuse it. I find her personality a comfortable match with Qiao Feng.

Qiao Feng on the other hand is overly blunt. More like straightforward to a fault. He's not really cold, in fact he's almost a pushover in my eyes but I guess because of his logical perception about everything he tends to see and take things on face value and responds to it accordingly. That made people view him as insensitive. I actually am quite fond of him and find him cute. <<less
