So.. Imagine a story about Xanxia. That is this story. No world building, some fights where the enemies are one dimensional. The word ‘tr*sh’ everywhere. Proceed to train and level up. No meaningful conversations with friends, no character development, no reason to care. Would not recommend.

Spoiler

1- MC thinks of hiding his abilities because being low key is the best. Immediately proceeds to fight powerful people and show off his power with Chuunibyou lines.

2- MC fights one enemy. Enemy is defeated. Enemy thinks MC is tr*sh – then calls his older brother to fight for him. Older brother is defeated. They all think MC is tr*sh. Calls his best friend to beat MC. Best friend is defeated. Everyone still thinks MC is tr*sh. Someone’s god damn grandma comes out. Repeat.

3- MC goes out to train. Finds some lucky super powerful item. Repeat step 2. This is the story by chapter 32. No thanks, I’m done reading this.

Started out nice, but then it turned to fights + fights + more fights without anything in between, enemies just keep on popping out of nowhere, there is no diversity only fighting, it gets really repetitive, its basically peerless martial god without all the prince and princess as enemies in every damn arc.

Opinions seem somewhat scattered on this one, but I enjoy the hell out of it. Stronger than me? run away. Not stronger? destroy them. suits me just fine, also people complaining about constant fighting, that's the point... Also little character development I don't particularly see that, but it doesn't matter much either way. The only thing I dislike about this is this: "I, your father" bullsh*t he keeps saying, it's f*cking annoying.

Wuxia/Xanxia with a game element that only the MC has, it's the plot for a few novels that popped up recently.

Upgrade Specialist In An Other World at least did make an effort to justify the fights, and tried to make us care about the MC and his side characters, as well as make the enemies at least somewhat more than the generic "I look down on you, I lose, but I still think you are weak so I want to use underhanded tricks against you, and when it doesn't work... more>> and turns against me, I call for someone stronger than me because I just happen to be a renown genius from a world class sect, as well as someone that never even tries to reflect on my character, despite knowing that the inner heart thing is supposed to be important to be able to progress" that most of the novels of this genre use.

This one shoves a protagonist (in fact two of them), with little to no back story, sets the protagonist in a position he is looked down upon, gives him OP powers, then fights for "pride" where the opponents are all s*upid and want to heavily hurt someone they are supposed to be at best competing with within the same sect.

It might just be that I read too many novels until now, but I am really starting to be tired of those novels where everything is just a coating to make spectators say "I thought he was garbage, look how stunned I am because he wins".
At least when there is a semblance of reason for fights, and characters that are somewhat developed, it's not awful, but this novels skips all of the potential for story it puts just to shove into your face how awesome the main character is.

I mean, the "other world" life could have been expanded upon a bit, to make us learn about the character of the protagonist and his train of thoughts (really violent for being a video game tester by the way, and when did bug testing games help to pick up tons of chicks?).
The character that's basically taken over in the new world is hinted to be part of a medium-sized clan, and to have tried to force himself on a female that was more powerful than him to begin with (why didn't that female strait up kill him there and then for trespassing and assaulting her?), and being a low class disciple of a second rate sect, in a second rate kingdom. Apart from this, he seems to be well regarded by a few and looked down upon by most (for reasons not really clear, but it's for plot anyway, so who cares).

Without even reading any farther, I can already know that it's going to be meaningless fights with people that should not be involved, and slow escalation as the protagonist just so happens to gain power and treasures, first with the "outer disciples" of the sect, then whole sect and clan (whichever is stronger being the last), then among second rate schools, then among all schools of the country, then the big names of the country, then between countries.
Along the lines, he will obviously get his hands on the "best" women to serve him (the start is very clear that he is not the type to love one girl for life).

I'm really bored right now, so I'll probably keep reading until I reach the latest translated chapter, but I doubt I would regularly come back to it.

On the translation front, it is above average, so there is that, and while I don't see anything redeeming in the story, it's still that "power fantasy" that a lot of us enjoy in novels, films and games.

Note that I would be glad if I was completely wrong and it was just one of those novels that have a poor start and get way better later on, but I did jump to chapter 35 to check, and I didn't see anything that could prove me wrong there, sadly.

TL;DR: If you want a mindless wuxia/xanxia novel with the main character having game-like systems, you might have a decent time with it.
If you search for constructed stories and characters that are there for their own reasons rather than just plot convenience (it's the same in the end, but it's more believable when they at least seem to make decisions out of something else than pride and childish revenge), you might be better off searching elsewhere. <<less

This novel is actually very well written (raws) and I would rated highly just for the handful of colorful characters that really stand out throughout the novel.

The story has yet to progressed, and the fights seem to be fight of words than of fists. The MC is arrogant for someone who is either running, or hiding from an enemy most of the time.

It’s fast paced, but there’s no story buildup. It seems the author is making up new levels as he goes on. There is also zero romance, even though MC have several wifes. It’s basically get married, have kids, ascend to the next world, and forget all about them.

Basically an omnipotent MC with pratically no enemy or longterm goal. Any enemy he sees will almost immediately die and be forgotten. All the MC op skills and items at first, is basically tossed out as soon as possible when he levels up... more>> and get new ones. <<less

Honestly, it does have its moments. I find the fortuitous encounters and fighting enjoyable. If you've read a lot of CNs then it will be an easy read.

But it has no creative plot and it's just another Harem-Seeking story with one demensional girls who are heavenly defying beauties... Frankly I'm quite tired of it.

The MC personality is funny at times but there's always mentioned on how he's an "Otaku" this and "Otaku" that.. Didn't you just mentioned you were a Playboy?

Read it to kill time and not for something serious

Mortal Realm ark is decently enjoyable for a generic novel, with evey cliche you can think of. You can Expect every trial and test to a hundred times harder due to some chance circumstances when the main character participates. Expect when he joins a sect others disciples will try to rob him tell him to kneel, and etc. Many of the elder will try to kill suppress him, destroy his potential, and or kill him and many more cliches. The story is also somewhat repetitive as certain points. For example... more>> every time he returns somewhere and is far more powerful his allies are being attacked by some enemy only for him to arrive just in time and kill attackers all in one hit. Its you basic generic novel but is still entertaining enough for when you have nothing else to read, at least until the immortal ark.

After going to the immortal realm its like the author is purposely trying to destroy his novel. At the end of the Motal realm ark the the author pulls a bs move and the main chracter soul combines with some dumb mother worm. This gives him abilities to create powerful minions. This for one thing is unneeded, with the op system he has plenty of means to get loyal armies himself. While unneeded it wouldn't be an issue if it didn't cause problems. Sadly it does cause problems. The most annoying problem is forcibly changing the main character personality into a selfish Tyrant. Its written as an Emperer believes everything in the world is his kingdom and so belongs to him. Its never enjoyable to see a main character forcibly change, especially when its a personality type of a person no one would want to be acquainted with. Honstely I wouldn't even have seen it as a problem if it was done with solid writing. By that I mean life experiences turning him into a tyrant. However forcibly changing him into such is just lazy writing. Not to mention it brings up the question why is that the only part of his personality changing? Why hasn't he become bis*xual or gay, I mean the worm was a female. Why does he still care about those close to him? The worm didn't care about anyone she thought all were lesser than her.

Problems (Rant?) :

Spoiler

Another problem is the author is extremely inconsistent with combat powe levels. For example when the main character acends as a heavenly immortal he has 50x as much qi (more qi more combat power) as other heavy immortals. The only reason he has so much is do to a unique special qi cultivation technique he cultivates. Even so to kill early profound immortals he has to learn a few powerful combat techniques and sneak attack them. Only for 300 hundred years later his wives acend and instantly have Profound immoral combat power without immortal techniques or anything. The author writes that its due to the accumulation over 300 years but that breaks how qi cultivation has worked throughout the entire novel. The special Qi Cultivation techniques the main character cultivates basically just let's him cultivates massive amounts of qi compared to others at the same stage. Even then he has a limit and afterwards to increase that limit he has to strengthen his body or increase his qi cultivation stage. Not to mention his wives not being able to cultivate this special qi cultivation technique their bodies shouldn't the able to handle massive amounts qi amounts (they don't have powerful bodies.) As for increasing their cultivation that doesn't work either becuse after reaching heavenly immortal your forced to ascend in 3 months to a year. Another thing thats dissapointing is the main characters self created True Self Dao. Its supposed be the strongest dao and suppress all others. However the author quickly throughs that out the window making it so Yin & Soft dao can easily deal with it. The reason is supposedly because its extmerly overbearing and so soft can he used to counter hard, but that complete removes the original concept of the dao suppressing all other daos. The main characters solution is to use a secret technique that attacks the soul or raise his cultivation level to a stage higher to overwhelm the other. That just complete removes the point of his dao as it is now just coming down to more dao energy. His dao doesn't seem to be adding anything as all stage 4 can suppress stage 3 and kill almost all stage 3. You might as well just remove dao comprehension completely. The main character himself at stage 2 could only come to a draw against a stage 3 do to his body being extremely durable, and possessing a secret technique that has stage 3 power however he could barely injure his opponent at all. I'm not even asking for skipping levels just the original function of suppressing / defeating all other dao working against the same cultivation stage would be fine. The above becomes even more absurd when you take into account the main character has 18 clones each with the same power as himself which can merged into his body giving him 19x combat power. Even with that he still needs reach a higher stage to have enough power to defeat someone who cultivated yin and soft techniques at the same stage. At this point the True Self Dao is the dao being suppressed by Yin & Soft which negate its overbearing power making it useless. His dao is bacially a botched destruction dao that can only destroy yang aspect things. Calling it extreme yang dao would've made more sense as it destroys everything and can only be mutually suppressed with extmerly yin. I mean when he first cultivated the True Self Dao he was attacked by other dao paths because they wouldn't allow better dao paths to be created. He almost died from this risk all to create his True Self Dao. All of that only to find his dao doesn't even deliver, I can't even put into words utterly disappointed I was. Things like the above happens many other times in the novel as well. Another example was early on the main character goes through countless deadly trails to get resources to cultivate a body that can't be injured by a 3rd step Immortal Emperor, yet only 10 or so chapter later introduces undying immortal secret techniques that makes it so opponents can beat almost infinitely revived. The first encounter with someone with this technique makes it so only 4th step immortal Emperor or those with 4th step combat power can defeat him. Also the author seems to think wasting resources to troll enemies is funny. He gets a war fortress which is basically small deathstar and at first he can barely use it due to the cost. Later on when he has resources instead of attacking and killing enemies he himself could take out in one hit he mocks them and continues to fire off shot after shot of the main cannon. Each cannon shot takes 10, 000, 000 energy points by the way and an entire low grade sacred stone mine can only convert to around 10 enegy points. It wouldn't be so bad if his way of accumulating sacred stones didn't really on using divine points to buy weapons sell them. I mean come on he is still in the lower realm so their is no natural divine energy. He can trade divine energy for upgrading his Bloodline which even though he knows ajd has experience is extmerly useful he is neglecting. He could get special divine veins which he still hasn't done, special innate bloodline abilities, and etc Even worse is he still hasn't condensed his own divine spark. The reason he didn't condense it was because he wants to save divine points for emergency purchases, yet here he is wasting energy points that were earn by spending divine points. Its obvious the author is purposely stalling his cultivation. Another way divine points are wasted is on invincible defense. Invincible defense can block any attack but the stronger the attack the more divine points it drains. How he bought the innate teleport ability space special bloodline. After buying this he only used it for a couple 10s of chapters and then ignored it. Now he is back to only using invincible defense to protect himself from dangerous situations. The main character outlook on divine points it beyond s*upid. Its so bad that when he gets a windfall of 100, 000, 000, 000, 000 points his first thouhh is to find a powerful enemy and use all 100 trillion to buff an attack. Not only that but seconds later he starts uses 1 trillions to buff attacks against powerful enemies because he didn't bother to leave after killing the enimes and stood their sorting out his loot. Something that also is annoying is the author cultivation system is broken with countless plotholes. For example it took the main character ten years to figure out how to successful form his god spark but now, he can by just pouring massive amount of divine energy into his subordinates instantly promoted them to heavenly god. The main characters rank 9 heavenly god bloodline made learning how to condense it easier but now learning for those without any divinity in their blood right after he become a god is unneeded. Even those god reincarnation from the upper realms took 10+ years to become a heavenly god and that was only after being granted lots of divine energy from the upper realms. The main chracter didn't use any special secret method or the system he just poured in divine energy so why did it take 10+ years for the reincarnated gods after getting a massive supplement of divine energy but the main characters subordinate a couple seconds? Another thing that really bothers me is invincible defense. Its makes everything a cakewalk. He uses and needs to use it to much. His syste makes it very easy to be op, yet countless times he has to activate it to protect himself from enemies at the same cultivation or a minor stage or 2 higher. Part of this reason for this is from how broken cultivation is. Since speed can be increased to ridiculous levels (their is almost no limit, no matter your cultivates) the main character when he meets a fast opponent instantly has a weapon just a hair away from touching his forhead and he only has enough time to turn the invincible defence on. It wouldn't be a problem ifnhe was using it on people far beyond his cultivation level but needing it for similarly level opponents is a problem. Also 90% of his fights now he will have his system calculate were to attack to break techniques. All in all the system has turned from original something to help him cultivate faster and improve his deficient talent, to the now were its a large portion of his combat power, making each fight feel cheap.

Another problem which is sadly a problem with many harem novels is how the main character treat attractive women. For example when he sells a technique to the ninth princess of an empire he first says 20 cards but after she complains he says 8, while the narrator saying he was unfazed and wouldn't give her special treatment just because she is a beautiful women. The girl then leaves angry calling him greedy after getting the best movement technique in the entire empire for far less that he should have sold it. Then when the princes come he makes the price 25 cards and won't haggle with them at all. One more thing that really bothers me is how ones previous cultivation achievements end up becoming meaningless. At the start of story the main character comprehends the profound meaning of wind & gold. He also chooses the path of sword immortal (though he started with using blades he switch to sword after wind profound meaning.) However after going to a higher plane he switches to divine power and breaking all law with brute force (profound meaning evolves into law.) Then the author introduces ones path / way / dao. The main character comprehends his own dao of True Self. Having to many cultivation paths is not good so he has to 2 of fuse his immortal cultivation path (Qi), divine power (brute force), and dao energy (the way), into the path he chooses to follow, which he chooses dao energy. Then after awhile it changes to bloodlines which he chooses to space & time from the system, after awhile destiny energy is introduced and a comprehension forgotten. Until laws are a thing again only they are now much more linear and instead is called dao. By linear I mean he path (dao) only has one function, so the main character condenses space nothingness as his first (first for which he got himself), this path is a defense path that creates a vortex around him destroying destroying anything thet comes into contact eithtnhe vortex. He gets other paths as well, but they come from the system copying others paths and then giving him all the knowledgeable. After one progress by comprehending more paths and fusing them together. This next part is another new mechanic that is in play while the previous is also still a part. The new part is introduced when he goes to a scientific cultivation system, were everyone has a special arfitcst that tells them their stats, and can be given a class if they past a test (the more powerful the class, the harder the test.) Each class starts with 1 skill, thouhh the main character gets a never before seen class with 3 (whcih he obviously hides because he always has to be low key.) I personally hate the class meanchind as it is meaning the novel even more linear. Instead of like before were one cultivates techniques that powerful people created he will be assigned techniques related to his class. His special class is Grim Reaper which has 3 skills, 2 of which he already had techniques that did the same thing. The first technique his a roar which attacks both the a physical and spiritual attack. The roar belongs to the roaring warrior class which is the class he took the assignment for, but somehow he got grim reaper. The next skill was called deaths eye, it traps a target, making it so they can't move for 3 seconds. He already has the paralyzing curse technique which he got 100+ chapters ago, this technique paralyzed a target incapacitating them. The third technique was called infinite devouring which devours the life force of all within a certain radius it can only be used one a day. He just got a technique less than 100 chapters ago that is the same and I mean everything is the same even the limitation of can only be used once a day. This class mechanic was created by an advanced technological cultivation empire to make cultivation easier. However all it does is give skill that have names related to the class. The classes have different focus like power, or speed, and etc but do they think people lack brains? Do they really need help choosing techniques that are related to areas they want to focus on? Its not like each person class is optimized for themselves, going in depth for techniques that are the most suitable, each class has set skills. Even worse is now he has to join the imperial academy and participate in all sorts of s*upid trials (basically tournaments), from the empire (and since he is the protagonist makes 100s of new enimes) if he was to unlock more of his class. I say has to because for the main character that's the way he sees it. Sure techniques exist from ancient cultivators but for some reason he would rather push himself into a place were he will offend everyone and their powers behind them offending every arrogant young master within their empire. I'm not saying I want him to kiss up any be a wimp but if he can avoid dealing with idiots than why shouldn't he? Also I'm still confused about how class and their skills even work. Skill are in the hands of those who are influential and the man character gets a backer who sends him roaring warrior skills. Does that mean people can't learn skills of a different class and if so why? How does taking and passing a class test somehow make it so they can learn skills? All he did was pass a test. I really can't understand why the author introduces this class mechanic, instead of improving the story it does the opposite. One last thing that really bothers me is the overuse of the system. Almost everything from chapter 1800+ is the done by the system. He will use the system for stealth instead of learning stealth techniques. Mental attacks are useless, he just asks the system to shield his mind. He will use the system for formations instead of learning formations. He uses the system to creates clones that often have a higher cultivation realm than him to fight for him. He uses the system to ens*ave people stronger than him to fight for him. Even if his subordinates are not strong to fight the enemy he just let's the system attack for him with attacks far beyond his cultivation realm. The system might as well be the protagonist now because for most of the fights the main character cultivation realm is to low to participate. In the end by the time his cultivation level catches up he is moving to a new area were he once again relies on the system to fight. The main character doesn't even try to curb his overelence on the system at one point he is pretending to be a formation grand master he doesn't even bothers trying to learn when it 100s of time easier due to the system, just uploading it to his brain. All he would have to due is practice but even that is to much for him. At one point in a formation match while the system was doing everything he was just acting arrogant and spouting off insults, does the athhor not realize how cringe that it? He is acting like he is the greatest while he isn't even doing anything. Its not just formations either the system refines weapons & pills for him. Just scan something once and as long as he has energy he can created 1000s of perfect copies in a day. Instead of the invincible system is should be called the ultimate hand holding system. Later on a new arc starts, the system is updated and its now focused on rising his personal power. This starts out decent he still cheats with he system sometimes (shielding himself from illusions and such) but overall its good form around 200+ chapters. Then the main character one again starts to obsess about external power means. He needs more power? His first thought and action is to find op weapons to abuse his enimes with. He's completely stop learning powerful techniques instead just relying on Powerful weapons. Why did the author choose the body cultivation path, the path that seems the most inclined towards personal power if he is just going to rely on powerful equipment? He has a perfume enemy in this arc who uses time & space the first time he gets tr*shed by the guys clone. His only solution is to raise his cultivation which is already higher than the guys clone. Eventually after countless years he does and destroys his clone. Next time he meets his True body and gets tr*shed. His only soultion, find a powerful weapon and armor? What happen to his mindset at the beginning of this arc of body body cultivators don't need to rely on weapons? Why has he given up cultivating any secret techniques? His system has scanned and entire sects worth of them millions of techniques and created the most advanced body cultivation method. If it can do that why can't it create some secret techniques to deal with time and space users? His brain was already small in the first place did body cultivation make him even dumber? Does the author not realize how boring and dissapointing it is to watch him just smash people like a brute while they use all sort of interesting techniques against him. Its really sad because at the start he did use techniques and some pretty cool ones but the author just stopped and now every attack is just 'Lin Fei smashed out with his cudgel, ' or he activate his weapon and smashed out with his cudgel. Not to mention him defeating an antagonist only because his cultivation is higher and or he has op weapons is completely unsatisfying. I mean the fact he has to rely on a space treasure to defend against time and space path cultivators at the same cultivation level is dissapointing. The main chracter goes on to day the only method to Crack it is being stronger but that's how all cultivation works if your power is higher that no matter what path you follow you can deal with time and space techniques. Every fight with a time and space cultivator, no every fight with anyone boils down to him using the space treasure and then just hitting them its boring. Truefully that's how its been for awhile its just before instead of the space treasure it was him using the the illusion scepter, and then hitting them. It only gets worse until we ended up going full circle the whole focuses on personal strength is forgotten again. The author the introduces more bs things like a special life who can control the cultivation energy in your body, can move so fast the main character can't hit her and etc. Finaly the only solution from the system, is to buy one times damage tranfers that transfers her attack back at her. So were back at the system fighting for him. Later on the horrible quest system is reintroduced. The one were it says the quest are optional but the penalty for not completing is so heavy he wouldn't be able to complete the next task because of how much he would be nerfed. One quest that's extremely infuriating is that he has to help his pervious enemies. These guys caused him problems before and the system sent him a quest that forced him, to attack their sect and retaliate. Now he is being forced to help protect their sect, and he has to convince them to let him help, oh and he can't force them. Just thinking of forcing them to let him help made the system give him a warning that he has been suspected of cheating this is the first of 3 warnings before being harshly penalized. Since when did the system become minority report penalizing him before he even acted. He can choose not to complete the test but the system will rip out 1/3 of all techniques he has learned from the system as punishment. Let's be honest with how just a few minor quest of the system have already made him enemies with 3+ other Universes is not an option if he wants to continue living, all which are stronger than his universe (the weakest, like it always has been for everything. He started his journey from the lower dimension of a sealed realm (which happened to be the weakest location in its dimensions) which turns out to be a tiny fragment of one continent of a world that before being shattered had 99 continent. This world just happen to be one of many very far from the major power of the empire that rules the dimension it is in. His dimension happen to be one of the weakest and was about to lose it qualification to even compete in special tournaments that happen every so often as it had no realm ruler. Then he went to the greater world that his dimension is connected to which their are 9 or 10 in his Universe. His greater world turns out to be sealed and the part he starts on is just an island while the other sealed parts are 4 massive continent's which are much more powerful. His greater worlds also turns out to be the weakest of all greater worlds. Lastly his Universe just happens to be the weakest of all Universes as well...)

leveling system that doesn't make sense, an extremely s*upid MC, and no development in story then continue. An

example of this bad system

is not knowing how many pts toward items that the MC has saved up and later just saying bills how much he spent.

Another example, the realm strength is not consistent like at some points he can fight others a few realm ahead and others he can't with no explanations whatsoever. At one point he could not fight a few people at the same realm that were listed as basically cannon fodder and a few chapters later he is killing them in the hundreds and fighting people over 2 realms higher. The most basic point about that is he did not level up at all between this.

  1. For the second point of a s*upid MC, I will only cite the one thing I really can't get over about this MC. He results in an extremely heavy treasure and doesn't even mask what he looks like.

Novel is about an otaku in martial art world with game system. However, the story divert off a lot from original premise. Additionally, writing style is quite messy, you'll be quickly introduce/discarded of new characters. There is little character development, and it is one villain after another.

The author doesn't spend much time into his writing. The writing are hard to follow and all over the place. There will be a lot of cases where suddenly a character appears with no foreshadowing or prelude explanation----- just for sake of being a... more>> nuisance or hostage. You can expect little to no dialogues for "old characters", since their arcs are already done.

Spoiler

At one point, MC has 4 wives. However, the wives have little to no dialogue or story after they are married. If they ever speak, it is sorely the main wife Lin Zhiqing whom is speaking, while the other 3 are reduced merely "several wives". In many instances, author will shorten the whole relationship into "our MC accompanies with several wives".

It´s written without any kind of details. Especially the beginning is full of timeskips, plotholes and contradictions... kind a dusturbing to read. Imagine a fight between MC an Mr. Villian. -> MC starts with a newly learned move beeing just a novice in this technique. -> 3 Seconds before the fists impact he is an expert. ->MC wins with ease. ->Timeskip or plothole. ->Repeat.

Addionally the Process of leveling is... ähm... written like... öhm... it´s not good. For me it´s not possible to understand what exactly is needed to level-up a... more>> learned technique, it just levels up, that´s it.

In my opinion the author is a hardcore fan of the korean novel "Invisible Dragon" and tried to create something as "beautiful". <<less

This novel is great! Only 4 chapters atm, but if there is no drastic style change, this will definitely on my reading list till it's finished.

The novel starts with the just graduated, game debugger, not too handsome, 100% muscle from fighting, otaku Lin Fei, waking up in the 'dead' body of the waste of a third master of the Ling Clan, who was forced to become a lowly outer disciple for the God Martial Art Sect. We follow him in cheating his way to the top.
Hoping for more!
