One day, Song Shuhang was suddenly added to a chat group with many seniors that suffered from chuuni disease. The people inside the group would call each other ‘Fellow Daoist’ and had all different kinds of titles: Palace Master, Cave Lord, True Monarch, Immortal Master, etc. And even the pet of the founder of the group that had run away from home was called ‘monster dog’. They would talk all day about pill refining, exploring ancient ruins, or share their experience on techniques.

However, after lurking inside the group for a while, he discovered that not all was what it seemed…

No zuo No Die, so I shall leave my review here.

There are a lot of things to like about this novel. But let's first talk about things that people might not like:

    • The main plot of the story goes very slowly. Even at chapter 1713, I'm still blur what's going on with main plot.
    • The story is a bit of a drag as I suspect there will be more than 3000 chapters before the story ends which to me, that's super long.
    • In chapter 1713 there are more unresolved subplots and creating more as the author goes without resolving any of it. Sometimes, you just feel like MC coz you don't know anything.
Why this is worth to read in my opinion:

    1. MC is OP, not in the usual way.
    2. The misunderstandings just hits the correct spot.
    3. There are some cliches but it still make the series very fun to read.
    4. All characters are lovable in their own way, even the bad guys.
    5. It's some good and new compared to other Xian xia novels.
    6. Doesn't goes the usual no talent meet something and become OP to crush enemies. It goes "I do not wanna be normal!" Type of novel :P
    7. Comedy, no harem, I hope there's a romantic subplot as the tag stated.
    8. Girls doesn't get attracted to MC and spread their legs! This don't happen often in Xian Xia which is good!!!!

Spoiler

I have read this novel before anyone is planning to translate it and I must say for after so long, THIS sh*t IS THE CHEESE. Ok, long story short, Song Shuhang is a university student who accidentally got into a chatgroup with cultivators, and is now on a misadventure across space and time. His 作死, or courting death, attitude is worth the lols, offending, at current chapter, all the people in the worlds, yes worlds, including celestial beings and shit. What makes this work an improving one is that the author does not stay stagnate to one genre and mock generic xianxias, FYI we are now moving to mechas, cyborgs and japanese isekais. Harem wise is not forced, girls are not collectable cards with 2D personalities, advances are made by girls cuz Shuhang is way cautious. This work is not a serious one, no revenge, no tragedy (cept for some poor seniors, they got better), no over the top super saiyan style kamehameha. It is a fun read and something worth to laugh at. 5*

A new plot, a new character, and a new environment, this novel is a gem! There is character development from the MC, smooth sailing plot lines, and hilarious side characters, what more can one ask for? I am impressed with the depth of the story since it goes from light to heavy back to light again, generally with the story revolving in a light atmosphere. I got hooked onto this story and couldn't stop. Read through all the chapter in two days! Highly recommend for those looking for an interesting... more>> read and great translation! <<less

Basically, this is the best modern day cultivation novel. I would say best cultivation novel ever, but things like '0_0' and various Chinese slang prevent it from being the very best, while adding another level of comedy to the writing.

The entire story becomes epic after the first hundred or so chapters. The characters become really endearing.

Highly rated cultivation novel set in modern world, came in whith a fresh take and continued for a long time while building the world and characters.

The only issues that stick out are the end being rushed compared to the rest, though at least we got a clear end, and
Spoiler

the tractor arc went on way too long.

Even though CChG is hilarious comedy, story and world building isn't hurt by it the slightest. Everything here make sense and every question has answer (except what gender is certain black hearted fortune-teller, that one probably remain mystery forever). Cultivation system is comprehensive, functional and easy understand. Characters keeps their relevance across whole story and are likeable if usually quite gimmicky.

All things considered, this is best Cultivation story I read so far, beating even "Spirit Blade Mountain" and with no other competitor coming even close. Despite maintaining image of parody,... more>> in core its more faithful to spirit of xianxia then many. <<less

Way overrated.

It starts okay but devolves into comedy hijinks and seems to want to hit every shitty stereotype imaginable.

The jokes are funny at first but quickly become senseless garbage and the main character is present in less than half of all chapters.

... more>> The MC ends up just being dragged along by other people and at this point he feels less like an actual person and more like a vehicle for the author to exposit joke characters and their "quirks".

Generally goes downhill after the introduction of White and Doudou, and I keep hoping their arc will end soon, but it never does.

Edit:

Also, forgot to mention, lowkey racism. Not as bad as many Chinese stories but all "western" characters introduced so far have been ret*rds, like actually mentally disabled levels of cognition, and all "half" characters are complete a**holes. <<less

Many love the setting in the novel and indeed it is novel and memorable. Some pretty funny moments in the beginning and the hype to discover the hidden cultivation world as a normal student. But that's it - the novel quickly turns into... very long-winded 'filler': you wait to get to the good parts but the filler never ends. Yes, every chapter is full of humor but besides it being the exact same type of jokes, it fails miserably to be even slightly funny like 1 out of... more>> 10-20 times. What started out as a pretty interesting and fun story became a clusterf*ck later on. It started out great, some average, everyday guy that you can relate to suddenly gets embroiled into the world of cultivation, and starts his path somewhat halfheartedly into reality. TBH the first 500 or so chapters are really nice, easily a 4-5, then the story tries to create some conspiracy into the world and tries really hard to make it seem like the MC is "the one".

Spoiler

apparently his spirit went back into and became some sort of hotshot which is the reason why everyone from the previous era seems to recognize the MC but then turns out wasnt the guy they knew from back then

[collapse]

Then the story completely takes a 180 and makes the MC some sort of cultivation genius with serious hacks. The MC is still dumb as a rock and there are simply too many characters to remember, becomes super complicated.

Spoiler

So apparently r7 is supposed to mean ur some kinda hotshot, except later on, there's countless amount of r8+, even the r9 which apparently no one has entered that realm in like a thousand years, but apparently in outer space, yes outer space, not another world, they are common like cabbage and get killed quite often

[collapse]

Overall, good story until later on when everything becomes confusing. <<less

An unorthodox XianXia novel that focuses more on comedy compared to serious XianXia cultivation/shounen battles. Comedy is nicely mixed together with some of the more serious plot points, the story does not get sideline but instead proceeds along in a fun manner.

Best if read in Chinese, some of the jokes do not translate well in the English language. The author makes use of multiple jokes that only make sense with context, translators did a good job but originals are still better.

Recommend for people suffering a burnout from binge reading XianXia... more>> novels like Desolation Era, My Will Shall Seal the Heavens, A Will Eternal. <<less

Good read, story is humorous, so are the characters. Translation grammar is very nice and readable. Only thing sad is that it is only two updates a week but I can't complain when its being done for free.

I really wanted to like this. It does something most other in it's genre doesn't. It humanizes cultivators, makes them feel more like real people rather than characters. The silly stuff they do, how they react, how they speak in the group chat, they FEEL like people. Which is one of the reasons why I wanted to like this.

But then the fking dog came.

I'm fine with annoying characters. In fact they make most boring-ass novels more interesting and entertaining. But the author forgot what's important to have with his characters.... more>> Comeuppance. They don't get consequences, everything works out. And when everything works out, they don't learn. They don't learn, they don't get character growth. And it's wholly unsatisfying when they f around and don't find out. Especially the fking dog.

There's entire chapters dedicated to their tomfoolery but none for their just desserts. And they just keep appearing one after the other.

The MC is... mid. It's just typical 'nice guy' MC that is sometimes smart and sometimes dumb. He's human, to that point, which is good as he's our point of view in this cultivation world. But then the annoying people came and took the spotlight, making the already slow crawl of cultivation slower, I just had to drop it.

TL;DR: Fun at first, but annoying characters came and did annoying things without consequences. Made reading a slog. <<less

This is still one the best webnovel I read.

It’s interesting with many characters that you will still remember because they aren’t just SIDE characters that are going to be forgotten.

Like most MC, they have strong plot armour, but this novel bring it in another way that it’s isn’t disgusting in some sense.

it's really good.

it starts a bit slow, and it takes time until MC gets to cultivate, but it's a really good novel.

the characters are cool, many different and interesting characters.
really. The old strong guys are not arrogent bastards. They are all actually human. You can feel them being human, they have hobbies, and they do things that regular people do.
they like playing farmvile on their phones!
it's probably the first novel i've read that has human characters like here.

the MC has super high level MC luck, but I guess it's part of the story here. Other characters are aware that MC is super super lucky, so it doesnt ruin the story like it would for other novels.

it's not a harem. Atleast I think it's not. 1200 chapters in and almost no romance. It's cool tho.

solid 5/7. You must give it a try! <<less

One of the rare ones that suit most people. Its highly comedic with a wonderful cast. The underlying plot is still mysterious even at 2800+ chapters simply because the MC is just too special that he must be central to the many thread of hinted plots planned all the previous gods but it just doesn't show.

MC's biggest ability is his ability to get friends. He doesn't mooch if he can help it but he is always treading water in terms of wealth due to circumstances. He helps his friends and... more>> his friends help him and he's an all round nice guy even though as the series continues, his friends on speed dial are the equivalent of Albert Einstein, the UN secretary general, Bill Gates, etc.

The one bad thing about the series is that as the cast gets so large and the MC's level gets higher, l a lot of the other cast characters have to sit in the backstage and come out just for a few sentences every 20 chapters. Only the MC's "equipment" are exempt from this including his ahoge, his crazy holy image and a cast of other weird characters <<less

This is an absolutely hilarious laugh-out-loud series that I really had to struggle to put down. I missed a lot of sleep and hardly left my apartment... Every chance I had, I was reading another chapter in my fight to catch up. The plot was a little slow at first, but it improved drastically once things got started. The MC accidentally enters the world of modern-day Xianxia, and all of his preconceptions become utterly destroyed. The characters are all well-rounded and have their own strengths and weaknesses as well as... more>> knowledge and ignorance about certain matters. Each one gets feisty about certain subjects, and they each have varying levels of intelligence. Certain members of the group keep acting before they think, becoming members of what the MC dubs the "death-seeking army." The punishments are quite creative.

This is unlike many of the Xianxia with redundant revenge-focused single-minded characters, and these guys are intelligent enough to know how to survive. If they acted like characters in other Xianxia, they would never have lived to reach the ages they have, which adds a strong touch of realism. There are no Gary Stus or Mary Sues either! The MC is not some genius that instantly comprehends anything he sees.

This series asks the question "What would these people do in the face of modern-day technology?" The answers really crack me up.

The MC has abnormally good luck. If he's short on money, he finds money. If he's looking for an herb, he finds the herb. It's nothing over-the-top thus far, and he realizes it's only luck and not his true ability. Then, another character with catastrophic luck appears. This one's luck level is over-the-charts, but it comes with lethal consequences for the victims who happen to be nearby....

Spoiler

A meteor knocks a poor cultivator from the sky. Later on, it blows up and nearly kills the MC. The MC is forced to ingest this monster plant, which would have killed him if someone else didn't pump his stomach. There is a plane crash with many subsequent life-threatening events, etc.

[collapse]

There are other good traits aside from comedy and character development. The plot is is interconnected, and the action is entertaining. The fear is real.

The characters are distinctive and gut-busting comical. They could easily star in a series on their own, but they work magic when they are tossed in a series together. This is definitely a series one should not miss. <<less

One of the funniest and better written webnovels I've seen in a while. I would be perfectly content to have it continue as it is with the MC cultivating, going on (mis) adventures, enjoy the occasional freebie and good luck (and the bad that always comes after), and making one odd new friend after the other. All the while trying to get his mechanical engineering degree and making sure his friends/ family don't find out anything weird is going on.

edit: over 1000 c and I'm still liking most of it... more>> though there's been a few times I got bored. <<less

I'll keep it short, as you can probably see the reviews in NU has a high rating & I for one also agree.

This novel is one of the best novel that integrated modern society & cultivation world.

The comedy in this one are great and jokes maybe be repeated a lot for each arc but not for every arc, more like each arc has is theme so every arc in CCG is very refreshing & original IMO.

A lot maybe curious about the romantic subplot of CCG so be warned that there... more>> are female char that expressed interest to MC but the romance isn't really that great or just too subtle or sometimes just direct to the point, it's not bad but this novel really isn't a romance novel so don't expect much on that department, this novel IMO is for pure comedy & entertainment.

There are a lot of events happening in MC's life after entering the cultivation world that the MC even thought of having a notepad for things to do. I can't really say that the story is too slow or too fast
Spoiler

in 1605 the MC grew from an ordinary person to Fifth Stage cultivator (most top experts are in Ninth Stage or Heavenly Dao), too slow? 1600+ chapters and only halfway? In these 1600+ chapters a lot of events are happening and yet it hasn't even been one year since MC began cultivation, so then is it fast?

[collapse]

Although MC's luck is extraordinary at some places it's not
Spoiler

MC's cultivation techniques are mostly at 2nd stage even though he's already at 5th stage, also MC advances too quickly but MC already died 3 times because of it IIRC & with a huge possibility of increasing death count. He is also being eyed by multiple 9th stage & above experts wanting to dissect or kill him.

[collapse]

[Edit] as of year 2020

Finally finished.. Some might not be satisfied with the ending but for me it is one of the best ending (for CN webnovel) as although it is fast paced it doesn't feel too rushed.. Many mysteries are being revealed post main story but maybe not all will be revealed it depends on the author.. All in all this is still in of the best novels I've read. Why because I've finished reading 3100+ chapters, other CN novel i've read I've dropped from maybe around ch500, 1000, & 1800 atmost <<less

Brilliant. This is exactly what you imagine. Or at least what I imagined/hoped:

-MC is a current, real world earth student

-Adventures happen/Student seeks adventures for resources.

... more>> -Light comedy style.

-It feels very realistic. The people feel real. My suspension of disbelief is unbroken, except maybe once when some cultivators were for comedy purposes, obviously exaggeratedly s*upid.

-The "modern" methods of cultivators are great and fitting.

-The characters and interactions are not wuxia-style.

Especially:

-no arrogant "You insulted me, face death" stuff.

-MC is cunning and logic in his actions but acts morally understandable/acceptable.

I'd say it's one of the best xinxia/wuxia/... novels - but it isn't in the typical style. I definitely recommend it - in particular as light, comedic, adventure, self-growth reading. <<less
