Every drop of this family bloodline is stained with sin. They are the embodiment of contradiction; calm yet maniacal, with great memories yet often forgetful. They pledge themselves to their dreams yet often compromise, are angels that are also devils… It’s why I hate them. And also love them.

The only hope of his family, a youth with the blood of elves and demons walks on a battleground of annihilation and rebirth. He wills his way through boiling lava and icy depths, killing on this field of despair to strike down the lofty figure in his sight. One day he’ll grasp his blade tightly and survey his surroundings, only to find no more enemies to kill.

Will there be a secuel? This novel deserved one more volume, the last one ended too quick, if not because that, it could be one of the best novels I read until now.

My first impression in this novel is it's very very very confusing, the prologue drop my interest reading this novel, I thought that it would improve but instead it became worse. To many question left hanging about this and that. I don't about others but this novel is not for me. To much this and that I don't know where to start. It's like solving a mystery without knowing where to start.

The MC (although I am not sure if that was the MC) is like a puppet or a doll... more>> who was drag with this and that. At first I think their was an attempt to make a character out of the MC but I seriously fail to notice as I can only see a doll like MC who was describe as this and that but at the end of the day all his action can't be justified as his own. IT was like MC is doing this because this is what they want to do. The characters are very transparent I was like who this again? it's much worse that putting a tag with who's a boy and who's the girl.

Spoiler

MC meet his father side family all I know is the number if his brother and sister and not even I name was mention (or did I miss reading about it?) his father was like boom exaggerated character that introduce with a blast but slowly fade away. MC's mother was very transparent to the point that I ask my self, oh she died...

[collapse]

I love reading simple things and what I hate reading is complicated things with complicated stuff with an annoying and unnecessary mysterious mix in it. and other words I feel like flipping a table and shout out loud "To hell with this novel".

The author might think that the novel might be good to start with a blast, he was right the first thing I had in mind when I read the first chapter, I won't last reading this <<less

-1 star for how author handled the Scholars of Soremburg. Scholars are arguably the worst offenders for MC. Many readers are very upset with them as well. And when he goes to handle them what happens? Do we have a few chapters of them despairing, regretting and begging or anything else that matters that the novel was full of in earlier chapters? No, we get 1-2 lines where author just skims over it and waves it off because its the last chapter and he was rushing like his life depended on it.

-1 star for character inconsistency. Example Lina. She is portrayed as someone with high bottom line/decent moral compass. She will go against mc's interests when MC doesn't care and wants to send Sisley back to Schumpeters because Sisley will likely to get gangr*ped and tortured by the pe*vert higherups. But at the same time she is totally fine with Schumpeter research facility that Archerons got control of and she is in charge of where locals are treated like livestock and guinea pigs, tortured, r*ped, humiliated and mind broken.

Mid novel Lina is very shy and is incapable of expressing her romantic feelings to MC properly. Considering this, its even highly likely she died a virg*n since she had a crush on Gaton since she was 16 and was probably saving herself up. Revert to earlier chapters and she is portrayed as your average provocative s**tty onee-san trying once to seduce our shy teen MC.

-1 star for all dropped plot lines. Pick random character and author was likely to build them up only to have them become irrelevant and forgotten. Example Sinclair/Phaser. Here are all her plot lines that I can think of that went nowhere:

Phaser has Sinclair's partial appearance, is based on her soul, has inherited residual memory and trauma. Even if MC had no reason and wouldn't fullfill Sinclair's dying wish and deal with Schumpeter pe*vert higherups, logically it was up to Phaser to do that. Phaser never went after them.

At some point Sinclair's sister Sisley joins MC. Sisley is the one who betrayed Sinclair and had her life ruined. Phaser never confronts Sisley, they don't even interact once.

Broodmother tells Phaser that what Phaser wants is love. For that she gets more humanlike body. Goes nowhere.

Phaser gets partially independent and plots with broodmother's clone who is also partially independent for full independency. Goes nowhere.

Masterpiece.

  • The first volume is quite slow, the MC personality is also a bit annoying, but this quickly changes in volume 2, so don't stop at the first volume.
  • The final volume was a bit disappointing, but still acceptable. All parts of the story can be completed well even though it's a bit rushed
  • MCs have lots of women, all of them have personalities, and that's good. In fact, each side character has a realistic personality, which is another positive side of this story.
  • The World Building is a masterpiece. It was written so well that one could completely immerse in the world of this Novel.
I guess until here, I'm not good at making reviews.

Its shit. This author does this stuff. He is like a cook who makes meals that initially look great but when you taste it, it tastes like shit.

The novel has a very good quality translation and the writing feels like a good published work but when you look deeper, its full of shitty plots and character inconsistencies.

The MC is very inconsistent with his harem. Sometimes he doesn't get turned on when a hot girl is trying to seduce him, but at the other time he gets turned on by seeing... more>> some naked b**bies.

This guy hates his dad when he forks out most of his money for his well being and education. His mom actually taught him not to turn against bullies, according to her it is supposed to build up patience or something. She died by su*cide in front of him.

All the characters do anything out of blue.

Spoiler

In one of the scenes, he was accepted as a disciple of a powerful female mage, Sharon. The identity was like a protection to him because no one will try to kill him in academy. One idiot tries it and gets caught. Sharon lets the mu*derer go because he pays tutuion fees. She organised a duel between them 30 chapters later.

[collapse]

The conquest and the plots are s*upid.

Main character doesn't have a personality. <<less

City of sadism, thats where the author lives.

The author certainly loves being sadistic as he kills off characters with potential growth throughout the story, honestly why not make a custom tag for these kinds of stories "Massacre Mania".

The reviewee Celes below had quite the strange review as if you've read atleast more than one chinese novel then you would have opened the door to this story expecting a 1 dimensional happy go lucky protagonist, which I personally love as its one of my guilty pleasure.

Between bad protagonist and a... more>> s*upidly prideful protagonist even if the events are as follows

Character 1 gets offended, MC slaps charactee 1, character 1 was related to a powerful character 2, but MC also gets stronger, and MC slaps character.

Rinse and repeat, cut and paste, this was the same but it turned to a slaughterfest every other chapter.

Hope author gets out of his lucid dream. <<less

One of my greatest read. It hits hard like you want to strangle the author to death and it also hits home to the point you want to worship the author.

I love the writing style, except for the early chapters where I have no idea when's the story is going to start. The way places were describe were not too boring to read, they're actually pleasing to the eyes.

What I loved the most about it is its world building being alongside the characters and no mindnumbing info dump (tho I'm... more>> not sure at the later chapters, but still.. it was bearable).

I got some trauma somewhere at the early story by the way, so, you know, I just want to give a heads up. (Dmn it, really makes me want to give the author some kick.)

I love nearly everything about it, except for those, I don't know, some unfulfilled stuffs and unreasonable ending. It's fine to have some tragedies, but hey, at least make it reasonable. The world is already miserably unreasonable, at least give the story a whole soul.

So here's what I got some beef about.

  • Spoiler

Flowsand, god dmn it. The author could have done a better job at it. Like Nasia could have been Richard's mother, making the flames ignited being a sacrifice or offering to the Eternal Dragon. Or having Richard become more worried and careful, like warning Flowsand not to do anything stupd and checking the foods he eats.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Mountainsea. I don't know, I think I don't need to say anything about this anymore. The author fcked up her whole being, it would've been better if Richard just fck her up. Then, there was that surplus of offerings. Just expedite broodmother's growth then change the plane she was in rather than getting other useless stuffsl like weapons.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Waterflower! Why? I mean, why??? He slept with her too many times but nothing happened between them? Just why??! Sigh... They liked each other for Pete's sake, since his responsibility was already big, then adding more wouldn't make it even bigger. It's not like loving Waterflower would have disastrous consequences.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Dragonmage death. No! Just what hell was this?! He should have been expecting how his subordinates going to behave, how was he not prepared that someone will definitely die for him. Dmn it. She just died like that. Fk

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Other planes got neglected, I was more excited in him conquering other planes than the plot itself. Sigh, I wish the author expounded on it more.

Highly recommend it. Definitely going to re-read it. Quite slow at the first 10 chapters I think, but dmn it, it was really a great read. (It's coming from someone who read LoTM, RverendInsanity, SCoG, OG, ISSTH, RI, PoT)

Hmmm.. way better than Demon Hunter. (that thing left me with some very bitter aftertaste.
Spoiler

Why the hell would Li die, just what the hell was that for? He never even worry for her. I really dislike the MC for that reason. Sigh.

I regret wasting my time reading this. I admit that the early chapters is boring and somewhat interesting.

I just don't get it the fact that the MC's character should be prideful but he is not! Remember the bloodline of Archeron they are lunatic prideful and so on plus his silvermoon bloodline, it was mention that this bloodline also prideful and yeah I know MC's mother mold his character but never forgot that the bloodline is a part of his blood and soul meaning it will automatically remove his old characteristic!... more>> He already awaken it yet why his personality is still dumb.

If you're open minded and don't care a non-virg*ns in his harem (I don't get why the heck he choose Coco, his reasoning is plain dumb seriously he could change his partner and do the same thing to coco) I think the author loves to get cuck. remember he supposed to be WISE... wise to be cuck I suppose..

I admit this novel has lots of potential, MC's clan is not weak, they can fight and has tons of enemies around even if they got no unity. There is dumb character yeah including MC and also there is alot of interesting characters. Very vague about planes and floating island but still it is very interesting BUT, the MC is just a plain s*upid.

To summarize

I don't recommend this novel. MC character development suck even awakening his bloodline. MC supposed to be wise but he is not! same goes with pride. the title of this novel should be "City of cuck" why? Both his bloodline is supposed to be prideful and so on, but MC's character development likes getting cuck seems like author loves to get cuck too?

and No, I'll not re-read this novel ever again. I don't hate the author. It just a waste of time for me. <<less

The strength of City of Sin is that its worldbuilding is relatively detailed (although even here, it is excessively tropey). But for me, the point of fantasy is to present historical, philosophical, social, or moral questions in a new context. Worldbuilding for it's own sake is just m*sturbation. So here you have a Gary Stu, typical young master villains, refrigerated love interests, and a nonsensical plot: Essentially, a steaming pile of crap with a nice looking skin.

The first half was REALLY GOOD: the world-building, character development, backstories to understand motivations, and more. The only reason it's not a true 5 STAR is that the ending was really rushed. It felt like the author's creativity died down and he just wanted to cut things off.

However, it was still very enjoyable, epic, and tragic. I would highly recommend it to readers who like: kingdom-building, character progression, and something different where plot armor is weakened to a certain degree (this is in reference to the Best Girl in the... more>> novel :/) .

It's a must-read that leaves a bittersweet taste at the end. <<less

There aren't many web novels worth reading, and among the WW ones it is probably the best. Which doesn't mean its good.

It has many DnD elements, and avoids the usual pitfalls these novels tend to hit. Or does it? Because here we hit the core issue with the novel (which would be ranked worse if not for its amazing Editor TheoV, as inconsistent as his schedule is he does a great job at fixing stuff) : The later it goes the more the author does the same sh*t he always... more>> does (Look at my MoE review for that), which puts this otherwise amazing novel down to 3, instead of the 5 it would have deserved otherwise.

Spoilers from here on

Spoiler

As Richards might increases sh*t hits the fan more and more, and stuff just doesn't make sense anymore.

Why would the Babarians, including MS' mother, choose STE over Richard when the daughter in question not only has the ability to "smell" destiny but also chose him for that very reason? Why would a mother consent to forcing her daughter to get herself r*ped when a better option exists which would not take a steaming dump on their oh so sacred traditions and also avoid, ya know, getting your daughter r*ped?

Then Apeiron takes the stage. And its hard to say how s*upid this character is. In every regard. She claimed the throne by sheer force and intimidation, and then gave a rats arse about it. She directly offended Sharon, to a point where a war between the two is inevitable, for what reason again? She also pissed off her royal rune master, at this point in time the only one left to support her already crumbling empire, by torturing his friend and publically humiliating him. Among other things, kek. For some reason she is still alive, despite Richard having the chance and the necessary incentives to end her. Twice.

Then the SET... holy f*ck. These guys at least have a reason to mess with Richard. Or rather: Had. By now its getting increasingly inconceivable why they would continue to offend Richard when not doing so would be beneficial. They even have a link to him by which they could settle the problem in the form of saint Martin. Instead they decided to f*ck with him... again. Just that this time its not only aunt Alice which goes onto a rampage in their lands but big R himself. As expected the empire gets screwed over and even loses an epic in thei process.

Speaking of epics: How can the SA even keep functioning when their quite literally insane half epic is the only powerhouse they have and the SET has 4 to match her? Its not like any of the other two epics the SA has will help her. Unless "cuz plot".

In general it is quite questionable why Richard has not left the SA for the ME yet. One of his best friends is a princess there, he would have the position of an archduke at the very least due to that + his runecrafting + his personal power. The infighting and general backstabbing in the SA is just too dumb. That faction would nevere xist for more than two or three decades.

Speaking of princess Mountainsea. Just wtf. I have yet to see the author not f*cking up a female in his novels in one way or the other. First irrelevant, then damsel in distress, then irrelevant again, just to become food for the broodmother.

And while we are at it. Back when the novel was good Richard griefed over the loss of Lina. You would think someone as smart as Richard would learn from it. But nope. He goes to war with the reapers for no f*cking reason and just loses more friends and lovers over it. Ugh.

[collapse]

Tl;dr: The author must have been on drugs when he wrote the first half of the novel because its uncharacteristically good for his lousy standards. <<less

This novel for me is interesting ~ It doesn't just depicts the dog eat dog world, it also shows how cruel the world can be. A direct slap for those other novels where whenever the MC walks fortune follows ~ Every scenario has reason and effect not like others where enemies will suddenly pop-up. Same goes for the violence, how MC grows as he sees the world.

Story is not great, but decent... was rather immersive in the first volume (the prologue was honestly the best chapter) and reminded me heavily of coiling dragon in terms of medieval realism and character design (the author even copied the formula of the MC falling out of love and becoming more mature because of it). definitely not as good as work done by IET who is the master of immersive storytelling without romance. Right now at volume 2, the story has become rather disappointing. The main character, Richard, is extremely... more>> bland in personality and doesnt have any striking morals or purpose to his life. The author tried to mirror him after linley from coiling dragon but at least linley was a supreme badass who was plotting revenge against the church. Richard is actually pretty weak and can't go solo. Literally all he does is follow the future planned out for him by his father even though he doesn't like him (aka 0 independence). There's a harem unlike coiling dragon, but it's slow and pretty bad because women are treated like tr*sh in the novel unless they're strong. The harem formula in xuanhuan like against the gods is much better. In volume 2, I wanted him to get some real friends and brothers like in TTNH, but all he got was some s*ave contracted under him. The whole idea of planar wars also makes him look like a dickhead. invading a plane, killing all those who resist and taking their resources. ex) A young teenager charges at him calling him demon and telling him to leave their plane. He has the teenager and father killed. Honestly, dude seems like the villain and the emotional aspect of this novel is severely lacking. I recommend that you read this novel, but without high expectations. This author is not known for writing great stories or protagonists. A novel that I highly recommend is the amber sword. now that is a truly well written story <<less

After reading significant Xianxia and Xuanhuan novels with chinese themes one does get tired of them after a while and needs a breath of fresh air. This novel brings exactly that for people looking to read something slightly different.

Story:
The story till now... well there is no overarching story till now. However, as with most such chinese LNs, it is more about MCs journey to becoming strong rather than anything else. I keep getting a feeling that author is definitely witholding some sort of overarching story till now and will... more>> surprise us in later chapters. Anyways, journey is interesting and should keep you interested for now.

Narration and Worldbuilding:

There are some kinks in world building and I feel that some times world building aspects do not come through easily and there might be disconnect between author and reader. For example: There is mention of Klandor and Norland. However, I still do not know if Klandor is part of Norland Plane or is it a different plane or is a continent which is part of Norland. It is confusing because author is very vague and misrepresents it in a way that it confuses the reader.

Fun Factor:

The main fun factor for me in this LN is that it has following aspects which I generally like:

  1. Army Building
  2. Conquest and Wars
  3. Personal Power ups (fast cultivation as otherwise I get bored quickly...I mean we are definitely not reading f**king LNs like these for their beautiful way of writing or story or character building rt? its about power ups and face smacking which is why we love CN LNs)
  4. Powerful followers/friends
  5. Some focus on other characters (here there indeed is some focus... atleast author has gone to some lengths to explain the character and develop them especially MCs followers and some important antagonists
I dont think it is the best novel out there but it definitely is worth a read. The translation speed is decent and translation quality is decent. I believe that the translator team at WW will see this novel through so its a safe bet to read this one. <<less

Very solid 4 outta 5. One of the best Western-fantasy themed Chinese webnovels out there. Super high quality translation too.

What's great about it:

The story maintains a decent sense of intensity and crisis. Protagonist never feels too too OP (until like the final 10 chapters) and so there's always tension that keeps you reading on to see how he will win.

... more>> He sometimes makes frustratingly bad decisions, but overall those decisions add to the sense of realism-- you can't be right 100% of the time.

Side characters are very diverse and somewhat memorable.

Past areas are also frequently revisited, which is fairly unique compared to most webnovels where the protagonist just goes forward and never looks back.

Biggest problems:

There's a weird stale period around 70% of the way through the novel where the protagonist just starts wars in the various planes he owns. He doesn't get much outta these wars, and it really kills the progression momentum and feels like he's wasting his time as much as he's wasting ours.

Ending portion is a confusing mess. Absolutely NOT the worst ending I've seen in webnovels, but definitely a weak point. The powers stop meaning anything, and loose ends are inconsistently tied up.

And the worst problem of all...
Spoiler

most of the female MCs (his lovers/harem) get either no ending, or a straight up bad ending. Given how important his lovers are to the whole novel, their endings are almost enough to consider the overall story a tragedy.

Flowsand- arguably THE biggest female MC. Supports him and sacrifices everything. In the end the protag can't save her and she just disappears as Nasia in the end.
Sharon- the other biggest female MC. She gets saved and then forgotten about. More of a rushed ending for her instead of a bad ending.
Mountainsea- merges with a hivemind to save the MC's army, and just gets a silent hug at the end.
Rosie- forgotten about
Alice- forgotten about
Coco- does nothing until she gives birth to the child near the end, and then she's the only one with some semblance of a good ending.

Yeah, I really liked this, but also hate it for not being better.

First few books were kinda slow, but also consistently good quality (if you ignore or are okay with s*x stuff, r*pe, physical and emotional abuse, ect), but the quality kinda goes down as the story goes on, until the last book that was kind of a rush to the end and wrap-up.

The best thing you can get from this would be the sense of tension. sh*t is going down left and right basically all the time, there is... more>> barely any moments in this where the MC is not in a shitty position either because of the things he needs to do or the things he wants to do. Because the side characters are really good and have enough development, their deaths are impactful and keep the tension high. There were some cheap shots, yeah, but most of them were fine, they really emphasized just how dangerous the situation is. It could have been even better if someone got crippled instead of killed, but I guess that's hard to do when you have magic stuff that heals basically anything.

There was some repetition/reiteration as it always is in these long wn/ln, the most common being the morality of conquest and all that, but it was kinda disappointing how it just never made it to its conclusion.

The end made me kinda mad, mostly because it lacked payoff. I mean, you got a few big goals, you work your ass of and risk your life to accomplish them, and when you finally do it, you kinda just go, meh, and just f*ck off to do something else. Like, for a goal that MC had since like the very beginning, at the end we only get a few sentences and then f*ck off he goes... No, just no. The lack of epilogue really irked me this time.

So yeah, overall good, but a meh ending. <<less

actually Kythblood's review is really representing my view in this novel, so I won't say much

this is without a doubt one of best novel I've ever read and maybe on of the best in the site. Actually I think this novel deserve at least 4.4+ rating (of course I rate it 5)

Although it's not perfect like other novel out there, I think the we can ignore the minuscule imperfections and enjoy the novel

Ah, City of Sin, could write a whole essay of my love and hate for this novel, but will just leave it as:

Amazing worldbuilding, amazing design, amazing power system, amazing a lot of things. Yet awful how the author managed the "romance" genre, really awful, really. Also, the late parts of the novel were gradually decreasing in quality until it was a rush for the end, quite disappointing. But overall is an excellent and unique novel.

Definitely recommended.
