The plot follows two girls and their summer in a rural area.

Nagisa Yamada is a bored teenager who finds everyday life extremely unappealing – thus she plans on joining a Military School as soon as possible.

A strange new student named Umino Mokuzu, who claims to be a mermaid, transfers into Nagisa’s school and, much to our heroine’s bewilderment, soon begins to follow her around incessantly.
Initially, an annoyed and discomfited Nagisa strives to avoid any encounters with Mokuzu. But she soon begins to comprehend the pain and sadness concealed beneath this strange girl’s cheerful and carefree demeanour.

I remember picking up this novel while the manga was in scanlation hell and I was anxious to read the next bits, and hoo boy, was that a mistake, though not one I regret.

For the most part, the manga is extremely faithful to the novel, with one key difference: the novel starts off with the tragedy and then works backwards to get to the root of it, while the manga starts off with the girls' first meeting, with some glimmers of hope, before ultimately snuffing it out.

So, as you can... more>> see, there's a pretty big difference to how the story feels depending on if you're reading the novel or manga! The novel is an inevitable tragedy, while the manga hides its tragedy until the last moment. Even now, years, later, I'm still not sure which one I prefer more. The slight melancholy of the manga takes on an even more pronounced tinge of inevitable despair in the novel, so I guess it's up to the readers which degree of sadness they prefer.

And, yes, if it hasn't been obvious, I enjoyed this novel (and the manga). It's fantastic reading, even when the reader knows how it'll end. There's some truly fantastic turns of phrases in here that further accentuate the coming tragedy. It's a story that will stick with you long, long after you finish it.

The only issue I have is with that cover, which is so out-of-place, I don't even. The manga has more appropriate art. Even if you've already read the novel, I recommend checking it out.

TLDR; sad and heartwrenching. A great read for those who want to see an inevitable tragedy unfold. Prepare tissues. <<less

5/5 stars please read below:

I haven’t been so lucky as to have read the novel, but I have read the manga.

I can say I recommend the manga.

... more>> But I’ll tell you what, It really doesn’t shy away from it’s tragedy tag.

But overall I think it was a rather beautiful read. I say this as you can really connect with the characters; their personalities, traits, feelings and how they see the world. You discover the lies and the truths as well as the mysteries that truly make this a Greek tragedy.

You follow a girl called Nagisa Yamada, a bored and depressed but innocent 13yr old. She also acts as the chorus of this story, she narrates as her older-self knowing the past, coming to accept what happened... what’s going to happen.

Then suddenly appeared another girl Mokuzu Umino, a girl filled to the brim with sugar-coated lies. She follows our girl Nagisa, although she feeds her lies non-stop, are they really lies?

You could say this is just psychological warfare between the characters and readers. And maybe it is.

Though I have to say to get past the storm and find out the truths, you must read this yourself, it’s one of those that leave you with a bittersweet feeling making you wish you didn't read it but at the same time you’re glad you did because of how good it was.

If you can read the novel, then read it but if you prefer manga then you can check it out right now as it’s only 13 chapters long. The art style is great as well as the writing. <<less
