So gooood, like candy! That is of course, if you like that kind of MC, that is unpredictable and ridiculous in a super fun and smart way. The plot starts very simple, like when you can see the light below the door, and then it thickens like a good chocolate custard... I say, if you have some time give it a try, it is good for relaxing. Anyway, if you are looking for something really good, go search some Hugo"s awards... I recommend Brandon Sanderson, I assure you, you would... more>> be a very happy person reading his books.

I will add this: sometimes, when I see other people"s comments, I never know if I should laught or cry, seriously... people can be so abusive and rude! If you do not like it, or if it is simple or full of cliches, it does not mean it is bad you know... -.-" There are many people who can enjoy reading what you do not. And sometimes novels that start gross can transform into your favorites. <<less

yes he stole a chicken from his village the chicken doesn't belong to her he only came into the forest to roast it and she was attracted to the aroma, she decided to call him a thief just to eat the chicken. Her plan failed so she attacked him, luckly he dodged the attack and kicked her into a puddle of dirty water. Read the story for rest

if you were in his place what would you 've done you stole but not from her and you two have never meet before, their are no badblood between them not to mention the fact that you cant hate a person you didn't know exists.

At her age she had already accessed the dao mean she is no longer a normal person, had that punch hit him his body would've exploded like a water-melon or his chest would've caved in he would've died a gruesome death.

Serious, this novel is great. I don't get it why the rating is low. Maybe they expect serious novel where MC getting OP quickly and smashing people around.

Unlucky this novel are not. But it better than that.

MC work behind the scene. Since he still child right now, he keeps low profiles for his own goods.

... more>> MC is the transmigration from modern world to other world which use literature for cultivation.

As he were scholar before, he has vast knowledge in literature but don't expect he remembers and known all kind of literature that exist.

MC is the type of guy who has cunning mind, he not noble but he not a bad guy either, he loves his parents and so did his parents. This is funny story but the story still progress in decent pace.

I thinks that all for my review. This is really really good novel but of course not for everyone.

Don't give a bad rating just because this novel don't suited you. I really sad that the good novel is given bad rating just because it doesn't suit everyone taste. Yes, it doesn't follow your typical Chinese novel, but it still a great novel. <<less

The first half was ok, a few laugh here and there. While reading I liked it but hated reading it as well. Then I realized I like what it could have been! The villain was caught by th protagonists to (exaggeration sake, but not by much) only to end up letting the villain go due to his indecisiveness, because of this thousands of people die including people he considers family but the only thing he can think about when they meet is to. Cop a feel?!. This story line started ok,... more>> good not great and flatlined into a weak and repetitive plot. The character development is lacking, the reason behind actions taken is practically non existent. After exchanging his life for his bestfriend life, let me just say when they meet once more bullcrap just pure bullcrap. Sigh <<less

One of my favorite CN novels to date. Although the translation and error with names were a bit annoying, the novel is a solid 4.5/5 for me. MC is really shameless and hilarious which makes the whole thing really enjoyable. I laughed a lot as I read through the novel. The majority of the harem are likable and have decent character development. One thing I don't really like about the novel is how the arcs are structured. The story progresses from one arc to another while the previous arc is... more>> yet to be resolved/still in progress. Also, some major fights tend to be really drawn out and that might irritate some readers, I guess. <<less

So,

This novel starts out in the same specific manner that other novels do. The same boring female genius challenge, eviction from village, etc. But what was different about this novel is that the author really played the characters and the schemes well. He goes to the capital and gets embroiled in the throne war and the schemes but he is not weak. The human race is in wars with different races and it is played off really well at the start.

I agree that having 4 examinations with the content... more>> being almost the same was a bore. The first war was also superbly orchestrated, except for the fight scene which was dragged off till the end of time. Up to here, it was all great, I mean one or two fights are all fine if they are dragged.

But comes the next arc and there is another war and schemes (which were good) but they were so dragged that I can not read any further. And the conclusion to that fight was super long that I have decided to not read any further than this.

Plus point of reading this story: MC character development is good but not of any of the side characters. The schemes are good.

At one point everyone is strong and so is MC, which is just bad. Like in the first war, they introduce the enemies having a few Rebirth State as super strong and then the next arc, everyone in the capital is a Rebirth State cultivator. What nonsense was that? Why is there even a war if it is like that?

I would say, read it till "Crown Prince Arson Case" and then leave it. It just goes to sh*t from there. <<less

As a reader, I went through a lot of emotions reading the story of the MC. Strangely, these emotions formed a balance.

In simple terms, they were as if in a circle. One emotion to another to another to that emotion again, aka beginning and end being the same.

I am an emotional personal, so I felt all the emotions vividly. I am thorough impressed by the balance of emotions in the story.

... more>> I have never been so emotionally satisfied with a chinese web novel.

Anyway, talking about the story, shamelessness is an art, and the hero uses it perfectly. Laughed so much till my jaws hurt all along the novel.

There were villages, cities, continents, countries and races.

There were Strategic, cunning, scheming villians and heroes.

There was war, there was pain, there was tragedy, there was love, longing, sadness, greed, lust, violence, laughter, joy and happiness.

There was friendship and There was trust, care and love. There was betrayel, grief, anger, and regret.

There was a complete journey from weak to strong. From a poor commoner to becoming revered by all. There was an intense struggle, battles after battles.

In between everything was a tinge of Shamelessnes, lighting up the dark world.

Loved it. <<less

yes the novel started off rather bratty and slow, slowly showing us the whole world and all the mysterious things in it. What I enjoy about this novel is that the author know how to keep you wanting as you progress to the later stages of the book. And as much as I hate cliffhangers, this novel most often than not leaves you in one. And with our MC being a bit bratty and mischievous unlike his previous persona before rebirth is very fun to read and enjoy.

The whole book is quite detailed, the author added some of the mysteries from the real ancient folktales stories - goddess Nuwa fixes the sky, Yan and Yellow Emperor, great devil Chiyou for his plot. This is the author's 3rd book.

The MC is smart, shameless, funny, not quite fixed on others' beliefs, and is awesome at conning people. There are quite a few life-and-death situations where the plot armour is very thin, he had to self-harm 800 to deal 1000 damage to his opponent. The females in this novel are... more>> not like the typical foolish ones, they are smart, have their individual strengths and personalities.

Enemies increases according to strength. From fellow competitors to fighting old and sly ones to enemies imprisoned for thousands of years. There are sects and factions but he is not that committed to one, he proceeds according to his own path + got chased + "betrayal".

The book focuses more on scheming, romance came next after a few hundred chapters. The good point is the MC also self-reflects on how he kept on slaughtering many people and how he is straying from his path of living peacefully in the village. He is also one who protects his family even though he is not perfect in it.

Spoiler

The MC (Fang Zhengzhi) ended with a harem of 5 wives in the end -- Chi Guyan (FL, calm daughter of a military household, person of prophecy), Ping Yang (lively and willful princess of the current emperor), Wu Yu'er (mysterious leader of the intelligence network), Yun Qingwu (young leader of both demon and devils and demons) and Shan Yu (Southern City's next City Lord, ideal daughter-in-law in MC's parents' eyes 🙄)

[collapse]

The last few 20 chapters are dragging it out....
Spoiler

splitting clones? pepper rain? etc. The wedding is only half a chapter... and he got interrupted by the world builder (another transmigrator from earth who created the current world the MC is in, which explains the "history" is same as on earth) -_-''

I edited this review almost 2 years later, adding spoiler tags and breaking many words into paragraphs for it to flow in sequence. I think I liked this for the face-slapping moments? I don't even remember what had happened in the novel... <<less

While competently written and generally internally consistent, Gate of God doesn't really have much to recommend itself over the giant swathes of xianxia novels out there. Plot, character, writing ability, all of it is basically a little better than average.

I cannot recommend "a little better than average". Avoid unless you really like slow-powerup but MC always wins xianxia novels - the kind of story you can enjoy while you're reading it, but when considering it as a whole, it doesn't rise above its peers.

This is an entertaining novel of a MC who transmigrated to a new world who begins to learn what dao is. He fumbles his way to becoming stronger and happens to be a shameless money grubber. It's a bit different from your typical kill monster and join a sect to become stronger novel. This is more focused on the government side with lots of conspiracies between the kingdom figures and the demon race.

This would've been a 5 star novel except like what other reviewers are saying, it's really drawn out.... more>> There's so many exams and side adventures surrounding the exams in the early chapters. 300+ chapters in and you're still at another exam. And you have some chapters where 3/4 are reactions of random strangers talking about character x or y, how they'll do in the exam or what they've been up to. Some people don't like the filler-esque stuff but at least it's interesting sometimes.

As you reach the higher chapter count, battles get drawn out to 30+ chapters because there's always someone appearing, fight fight fight, another person appears for backup, fight fight fight, then another person appears. Rinse and repeat. Instead of looking forward to the battle, you look forward to the end of the battle where plot progression would continue.

My advice is bank a bunch of chapters before you read so the fillers won't piss you off too much. <<less

This story is an entertaining piece of fluff that lacks a lot of substance. Cons: Long stretched out battles due to random power-ups from MC and allies. Random power-ups from some antagonists, Antagonists showing up in the middle of a fight constantly to keep that battle dragged on. Some battles can last for more than 50 chapters. Every fight gets prolonged in some ways so a fight never last under 5 chapters that often. One fight scene is MC attacking elders, another elder interfers, MC ally interferes, another antagonist joins... more>> inn, another ally joins in, another antagonist pops up and that lasted for more than 30 chapters. Power ups, insight, will happen in those scenes and that is how it can last for more than 30 chapters with dialogues of the usual threats and the peanut gallery screeching impossible, sprinkled in throughout the fight. The MC is flawed, which I don't mind, but the author interferes too much into the world and the MC lacks any real consequences for his lack of action or exasterbating problems and constantly falling into the plans of one antagonist love interest. None of his side character really challenges him but enables that behavior. He literally worsen the situation and his greed played a role in some ways of causing problems but no one holds his feet to the fire. That is why this novel is fluff. Be prepared for a c*ckroach antagonist to last near to the end of the novel from chapter 350ish and onwards. Power up and breaking realms seems to get easier as the novel progresses and not the other way around. Again, the author writes the MC and people into situations that are hopeless so powering up is needed and the power ups are not that small. Pros: There are scenes of comedy but that is dependent on the individual. Some side characters grows and matures. Chi Guyan would probably made a better MC. She matures the most and without the MC shameless character, I would prefer reading about her instead. I just wish I can read more into her transition because the change is abrupt in the story. She is here and there so you don't get to see that change as you would like to. The world pretty much gets explored along with the MC. The main character is flawed, so you get moments of anger and frustration when you read about him. For me, that is a good thing and he knows he has his own problems but he lacks insight into how he makes things worse. He wants to be free like a cloud, doing as he pleases. Good and all since he recognizes that there are establishments that would not allow that and would have him eliminated or join them, but he lacks insight into say, robbing someone will worsen the situation for his friends and family, taking away wealth from those in power and leaving them into a corner and expecting them not to retaliate. I am not sure if the author or the character lacks that insight. It is what it is. An entertaining piece that is bogged down. The novel should be only 700 to 800 chapters but is stretched out given the levepower progressions. The author did manage to master the Chinese dao of stretching things to the point of me nearly dropping the novel. Instead, I had to skip chapters to continue. It is glaring when I read it continuously. These are my own pros and cons. For those looking for perfect MC without any issues, look elsewhere. You will get frustrated and I am the type of reader that does not mind. <<less

Hmm, synopsis and cover are a bit misleading. With such a cute cover and a confused tone of synopsis, I was expecting something akin to Cultivation Chat Group.

I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case.

GoG is a transmigration, but the ability is not book-eating, or at least not literally book-eating. The 'book-eating' has already happened before the transmigration, with the MC studying and almost perfecting his knowledge of the classics (almost, because his memory isn't perfect... yet).

Now, the world he transmigrated into apparently uses the old world classics... more>> as a gateway to cultivation. Scholars and warriors both learn the classics, now called the Law of Dao, as something akin to the Law of Physics, and then integrate said aspects into their cultivations.

The MC, with his past classical scholarly background, is absurdly able, albeit with minor bottlenecks where he has to apply the new world's understanding to the memorized classics of the old world.

Plot-wise, looks like a standard rise to prominence and also seems like there is a demon-human war in the future, as well as there are still some hidden plots regarding 'Double Roll Champion' thing.

Regarding criticism about plot armor or things falling just the right way for the MC... Well, Watsonian-wise, it is Fate, Doylist-wise, most MCs do have such things, especially in these kind of fast growth stories.

On the other hand though, the characterization is somewhat finer than the more common curbstomp xianxia light novels... Well, I probably won't be comparing it to older more established stories from the past, but it is far more pleasant than recent types. Both Chi Guyan and Yan Xiu's characters are surprisingly unfamiliar types of characters: the female antagonistic mentor/rival, and a possibly equal male best friend/rival.

Maybe I just haven't read much of these types of stories, but I feel like these two are very new and fresh to me.

Even some of the face-slapped young masters know when to back down without having to be stomped down flat first.

Or maybe it is the easy to digest translation? Eh. It is still a good thing to have good Chinese to English language and cultural translator.

Anyway, Four-and-a-Half Stars from me at this point of reading.
Who knows, it might lower or rise in the future? <<less

This one started okay and that's it. The story has only 1 formula. That is to doubt MC always. At first, we have something going on in the village then after going to the exam becomes dull.

About the exam. The MC always tops everyone. Top 1 and a perfect score. They praise the 2nd and 3rd but never the first place. The character is quite sh*t even if their power system is akin to scholar. They lack depth.

The MC always spares the enemy. The Li family and the head or... more>> chief something in their village abused them. The father was forced to do the labor (hunt) even when the father only has a 1 hand. Then about the harvest, the family who have a participating member has the least amount of food out of all the villagers. The father also got injured (again) and the ending.? Their family got expelled.

The power system is unique but has weird scaling. The author always pumps the MC power to overwhelm everyone who was taking the exam but not enough in the next never-ending exam. I'm in 170 but the MC is still taking the exam for like 3rd or 4th time.

Lastly, the political setting. The princess can't do whatever she wants until he meets the MC. The Chu girl who was suspected of saving the world is the number 1 girl and has absolute power and influence but not when it comes to MC. In a world where scholars reign supreme, they are quite confused people. <<less

Let me start out by saying I consider this above average for xianxia, with that being said it doesn't do anything great and has a few prominent issues that stand out. Because its so much easier to talk about the flaws, thats what I'm going to do. If you don't think any of these are an issue, the novels probably worth trying.

First, the MC doesn't really have motivation for a majority of what he does.

Spoiler

The novel starts with MC as a village kid, and the first thing he does is antagonize a noble girl, so he spends the next few years keeping a low profile so she doesn't try and get revenge on him. Right up until he decided he wants to take the imperial exams in the most high profile way he possibly can. He ends up drawing attention from basically everyone, gets assassins sent after him, and comes close to dying multiple times. He never gives up though. He's willing to risk his life for this, because he kinda felt taking the exams before settling down and getting married would be fun, and might help him get a job.

[collapse]

Second, the author wants me to think the MC is incredibly smart, but he acts too dumb for me to believe it. MC has a habit of walking into obvious traps (that he knows are traps) for the worst of reasons. And at the same time the author is trying to tell me hes the smartest guy in the room, no matter what room he's in.

Spoiler

The first time this happens is pretty ok. The aforementioned noble girl is offering a gold piece for someone to something only he can, to draw him out. He knows what she's up to, and since he's a poor villager now the gold is worth it, he goes in with a solid plan and gets out without getting caught. This is the only time it works.

Then the noble girl sets up a school in his town, because she knows he's smart and will learn the fastest. He has seen evidence she's monitoring it because she had someone she thought might be him beaten. So what does he do, he talks to the teacher that's feeding her info and shows him how smart he is so he can get access to the library. So now she knows who he is. When she comes to catch him the only way he avoids it is because his family coincidentally moves right before she shows up (which he had no way of knowing would happen) and then she just gives up instead of tracking him down.

The next time he is invited to a party, and when he gets there he finds out it's being hosted by the noble girl again, and he realizes its a trap for him, so he decides to leave but as he's leaving someone basically calls him a chicken, so he goes anyway, that lands him with a massive target on his back. Not a smart move.

He gets invited to a boat full of people stronger than him by a girl he stole a veil from (I don't understand the cultural implications of this, but all the characters seem pretty convinced he did something bad.) He knows that if he goes to the boat she can do basically whatever she wants to him, but he goes anyway. The girl plays a song for him and sends him on his way, but its never adequately explained why he thought this was a good idea, or why the girl let him go without doing anything.

In a fancy restaurant he gets invited to the back by a performer, he thinks the whole situation is suspicious, but goes anyway. He ends up drugged and kidnapped which makes him miss attending when the exam results are announced. But they're being announced by the emperor, and not showing up is a massive disrespect.

He is informed that the next stage of the exam is a trap by the demons, and everyone who participates is probably going to die. He decides he's going to go anyway, despite the fact he missed the sign up, the emperor is still upset with him, and the guy running the exam wants him dead. Why does he do this? It's because his totally platonic male best friend needs to be warned about the trap. (by the way he's only known the guy for a couple months at most by this point, and most of that time they were in completely different places). So MC runs into the dangerous area without any support or information and immediately gets captured by an apposing army.

In the middle of a battle he manages to capture the enemy commander, and holds her hostage to force a retreat. A few days later in a different battle he see her with only a couple people around, and knowing she is very intelligent, he thinks to himself she must be s*upid, because she didn't learn her lesson from just a couple days ago. He jumps down and tries to hold her hostage again, but it turns out her guard was a realm higher than anyone else and MC ends up the one captured and held hostage.

After a war he's in a different country celebrating victory, during the war he managed to extort a fortune from this countries royal family. As part of the countries customs the princess is cooking some meat, and if he goes to ask for some he's basically proposing marriage to her. It's very obvious they want to get him to marry her, and he really doesn't want to marry her. But the meat smells really good. Like really really good, so he goes and asks for it. Long story short he ends up as a fugitive from both this, and his home country for a two year time skip. But at least he got to eat the tasty meat.

So while he's been walking face first into all these traps the author is also trying to convince me the MC is basically the smartest. He takes first place in every exam, and even has some revolutionary answers to questions etc. He's also a genius military commander that can win against overwhelming odds. So I look at the author telling me how MC is the smartest, and then I look at mc's track record, and I don't believe the author.

[collapse]

Third, the MC is very inconsistent in how he treats people. Some people should dislike he likes, some people he should like he treats treats like tr*sh etc.

Spoiler

The MC basically only respects one person, and that's his totally platonic male best friend who treated him to dinner a month ago when they first met. Since then he's one step short of worshiping the ground this guy walks on. There are a couple other characters that he cares about, the first being just a guy that he fought on the same team as once, and the second being the main love interest (noble girl), who he has more reasons to dislike than like for most of the story (up to where I got) Everyone else he basically treats either as tr*sh, or as a walking ATM. I don't think this in inherently a problem but the way he's so inconsistent about it is. A character can save his life and all he thinks about is extorting money from them, and someone else can try and kill him multiple times and he basically ignores it.

[collapse]

Lastly is how the politics around the MC shake out. Basically every political faction hates him despite how he's proved how valuable he is.

Spoiler

There are four major political factions up to where I read. Two come from his home country and represent two princes competing to be the next emperor. The first is the crown prince who is currently first in line, and is supported by a lot of the officials, second is King who is in charge of the military, and wants to snag the crown prince position. The third is the demons who have a country to the south, and want to conquer the empire. Lastly is the southern mountains which are in between the empire and the demons, this country doesn't have enough power to resist either the empire or the demons, and is basically treated as a shield.

Lets start with the crown princes faction. They want to kill MC, because he's nearly the strongest in his generation, and has limitless potential he's an unstable factor that could break the status quo that's currently favoring the crown prince. Sure they could recruit the MC, but they cant guarantee his loyalty, and since they're already in the lead there's no need to take the risk.

Next we have King and his faction. They want to kill the MC, because he's nearly the strongest in his generation, and has limitless potential he's an unstable factor that could break the status quo that's currently favoring the crown prince. Huh? Ok, they can't guarantee the MC isn't secretly working for the crown prince, and since their faction is already losing there's no benefit to taking the risk. Well that doesn't sound right. Anyway its best to kill the MC.

Next up is the demons, they have spies all over the place, and should know that MC is being targeted by both princes and know of attempts to get him killed by both sides. With both princes trying to kill him the MC should have no loyalty to the empire, and if the demons can recruit him that'd be nice boost to their forces, while reducing the empires forces. So they should offer to take him and his family in and protect them from the princes. Even better MC is on relatively good terms with the demon commander (though at this point he doesn't know she's a demon). And by taking in his family they can protect them from the princes retaliation, and at the same time guarantee mc's loyalty to keep them safe. This could be a win win, oooor, the MC could secretly be working for the empire, so it might just be best to kill him. Yea, killing him sounds like a great idea, lets do it!

And lastly we have the southern mountains. They actually think MC is pretty neat, and want him on their side. But the empires crown prince mu*dered the southern mountains prince and said MC did it. And denying the crown prince's claim means accusing the crown prince of mu*der, which they have no solid evidence for. Doing that could land them in some hot water diplomatically. Except they do have evidence, and after the MC spent two years in hiding he came out and with their help proved his innocence with no problems. Cool now the MC can join the southern mountains because they're the only ones that want him.

Or not, because he doesn't want too, because he's actually still loyal to the empire and wants to stay there. Because of course you'd want to hang out in the country where everyone hates you and wants you dead except like four people rather than the country that actually likes you. In fact not only does he not go out to find a faction to take him in to get this target off his back, he even rejects people who want him to join them because.... uhhhh... JUST BECAUSE! (the people who wanted him are the southern mountains, and the shadow sect. I'm not to a point in the story where I know anything about the shadow sect though)

[collapse]

The story is decent overall, and I gave it 500 chapters, when I normally only get to 50. But the flaws kept me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to. It's not a terrible read if you have time to kill. But you could also use that time to find something better to read. <<less

Warning: I only read one half, so the score may be off.

First of all, this novel has a very strong reek of Fengling Tianxia's style: shameless protagonist - though this one is common in general - as well as spoiled princess love interest, bickering-style romance, love interest from a race that is hostile to humans but is outwardly human, messing with the emperor, comedic court intrigue, bros before hoes type of brotherhood - but to lesser extent, lots of plotting, scheming, and outwitting others and plot twists related to it,... more>> and so on.

This can be a good thing and a bad thing: it's good because Fengling Tianxia is a fairly good author (as far as webnovel authors go, not real novel authors), but it's bad because this author, Xin Yi, also ended up copying the weaknesses of FT's style, to lesser or greater extent. It's also a bit disappointing because, firstly, there isn't much left that can be considered original, and secondly, I came here for romance and harem mostly, and the slow progress and as-of-yet questionable quality of those is far from living up to my expectations.

Additionally, if I wanted to read a Fengling Tianxia novel, then I'd go read a damn Fengling Tianxia's novel. Speaking of it, Fengling Tianxia's novels are all pretty much similar to each other in themes and style, so if you read a few of them, it ends up boring. I did, so Gate of God ended up rather boring in the long run for me.

Okay, to the review proper.

The setting is pretty cliche. In fact, it's another thing that's pretty much copied from Fengling Tianxia: we get a feudal China setting that appears more about martial arts (Jianghu style) before being exposed to actual cultivation elements and such. Just like in Otherworldly Evil Monarch, we get a reincarnated person from modern Earth whose skillset enables him to survive and thrive in the different world. The only difference is the skillset and the fact that Fengling Tianxia's protagonist occupied an already grown body instead of being born normally. This kind of setting isn't bad per se, but it's also pretty lackluster.

The plot and its progression will be next. Generally, I don't have much to criticize here. The plot is relatively interesting and progresses in patterns that are often difficult to predict (except some more particular patterns that I noticed repeating themselves). Then again, I don't have much to praise, either. The first 50 chapters or so are relatively difficult to swallow if you aren't feeling patient, because it's basically one long prologue that ends with a timeskip.

The protagonist isn't anything special - just your typical shameless protagonist with pre-reincarnation knowledge/skill that lets him become OP (though soon comes the time he's facing opponents that outclass him) and pretend to be a genius in his current life. He's quite funny, and often trolls others, but after a few hundred chapters, you may end up bored of it (like me). It's a bit refreshing that he's a coward who risks his life as little as possible and doesn't want to get hurt ever if possible (because it makes it more precious when he risks his life, and it's in line with his pre-reincarnation identity), but the "shameless" factor makes it less valuable because it's hardly a surprise to the reader - because you already know that the protagonist can decide to do just about anything.

Just like in Fengling Tianxia's novels, the other characters are a mix of good and bad. We've got pretty cliche antagonists (those who fear the emerging MC will be a threat to their influence or standing, such as aspiring officials, princes jostling for the succession right, various young masters), with the only more inspiring antagonist being a love interest so we all know why the author put more effort into her character =.= and some occasional powerhouses that accompany other enemies but otherwise aren't recurring.

Like I already said, the love interests are pretty much similar to those of Fengling Tianxia's novels. In fact, I don't even feel like describing them much. I'll only say outright that the only likable love interest imo is the princess (since there are two princesses, I won't spoil which, but you'll recognize by my next remark when you read that far) because she's kind of truest to her feelings instead of being hypocritical or passive like others. Of course, because she'd be an obstacle to the author's development of other love interests, she gets conveniently removed from the story when being taken away by a powerhouse far above the apparent level of the setting (this, too, is taken from Fengling Tianxia - in Realms in the Firmament, we also get a love interest taken away to a higher world when she's at the level of kissing with the protagonist, and that, too, was a princess - just how shameless can this author get in copying others?).

Damn, the more I write, the more I see various similarities with Fengling Tianxia's writing style, and the more it annoys me. Like, whatever I write in this review, Fengling Tianxia's novels have it too. Like, check it out: this is a 2015 novel, while Fengling Tianxia's Otherworldly Evil Monarch is from 2010, Realms in the Firmament is from 2014, Legend of Lingtian is from 2011, as is Transcending the Nine Heavens... Damn, is Xin Yi a different account of Fengling Tianxia? Good thing I copied the words "Fengling Tianxia" or I'd go crazy from having to type them each time here...

Going back to love interests, I'll only add that I'm disappointed with the progression of romance in terms of both pacing and quality. It's basically all love interests wanting to be with the protagonist (which gets old eventually; why can't the MC fall in love first and pursue someone?), and they all are either enemies or have poor first impression of the protagonist and "develop" their relationship by quarreling, bickering, and such (don't even get me started on trading actual physical blows) until they see the MC show a cool side of himself by doing something great or helping/protecting the love interest herself. The pace, as I said, is slow:

Spoiler

By chapter 600, it's only the princess who had been taken away that kissed with the protagonist, and their relationship is at the extent of "I promise I'll take you back (before the novel ends) from wherever they took you to." In the next 30 chaps, the protagonist barely dodges (actually just delays) a forced marriage with another love interest, which pretty much came out of the blue in various ways because their relationship not only developed off-screen due to a minor timeskip, it also didn't at all develop enough to reach that step. Like damn, Xin Yi (or maybe rather Fengling Tianxia #2), you can't write a story like that...

[collapse]

Alright, we have the setting, plot, and characters, so it's time to mention the writing style. This is one of those good things in Fengling Tianxia's novels, so this novel has an enjoyable style because, obviously, it is also copied from Fengling Tianxia. I have to praise the author (not Fengling Tianxia this time, lol) for lampshading and making fun of cliches from time to time (for example, the protagonist wants to grow stronger, so he briefly considers falling off the cliff and looking for a cave or an expert's tomb underneath). On the other hand, we got some retcon (for example, the female lead is 2 years older than the protagonist at the start of the novel, but she's a bit younger than him a few hundred chapters later; some time machine sh*t over here) or just plain mistakes because the author didn't bother to keep track of his own setting properly.

However, as I already said, this style can get old eventually, especially if you read a lot of Fengling Tianxia novels.

Regarding the translation and editing, they're not perfect, but I don't have any major complaints. If I had to find one, it's that the translator isn't a single person, but a group, and it shows a few times because clearly not everyone bothered to read another translator's prior chapters to avoid inconsistencies (and so we get Wind Valley or something at first, but then... Feng Cu? Feng Su? I forgot... Anyway, its pinyin version).

So overall, the novel isn't bad, but it's also not great. Unless you aren't a fan of Fengling Tianxia or haven't read his novels much, you can give it a try, especially if you like shameless protagonists and humor based on that. <<less

I somehow managed to persevere till chapter 1020 and will definitely finish it at least to honour the time spent on this shit. The main problem with these novels is mainly the mindset of the protagonist and the ppl and by extension the authors mindset. For some reasons these chinese authors seem to all go along the same cliche things and especially with the MCs attitude which is shameless. Its good and funny and all at the start of the novel and u laugh a bit but tht shouldnt be... more>> taken to the extreme so much so tht the author makes it seem tht there arent any guy with a bit of braincell other than MC. Just to portray tht the MC is a genius with some unfounded or illogical basis the author starts ruining the entire character set up of other characters which he built till tht point adding mystery and whtnot makes the whole thing pointless and irritating for the readers unless thts their aim all along. Nobody is perfect in this world and if one wants to portray a perfect talent or the sort at least it should be a bit more logical and more understandable for the readers instead of some unknown plot armor.

The MC doesnt even own up to his to own errors or incompetancy or even refuses to acknowledge his own problems the whole novel making him a lot more detestable, romance is almost non existant the whole novel with the MC not even showing the basic respect accorded to females so much so that the entire novel he only looks for female bed warmer or s*ave or tht sort and even more surprising thing is tht those ladies are even ok with his crap and unexpectedly or should I say expectedly the author even has the gal to bring up tht the MC is from modern times. And I seriously doubt the author mixing friendship and the love between couple and comming with some incredible bs and I even started doubting if this is some BL cuz all those cliched lines r spoken between MC and his male friend, while FMLs r left hanging aside. The MCs EQ is basically non existant with no common sense or logical reasoning at all or some twisted logic which he thinks is real. <<less

For starting, This series is not masterpiece, most not even can called it good, but it was fun.

Personally chapter 1-100 is quite hurt to read as it took typical manhua trope and smashed them together. I was barely a finger away from dropping it. But once it start it is quite fun.

The plot are so so. It's your typical xinxia story with a lot of comedic moments. Hate them or like them.

The main character and heroines interaction are great, I really love them. The strongest point of the manhua imo.... more>> Would hope more of the moments but at least they all appear in a pretty good time and dont feel out of place.

The background characters are completely useless, but from many manhua i've seen, they are slightly more tolerable and doesnt make the world feel as hostile, So it's fine.

The translation is quite good. Though dont expect anything big.

This novel is very hit or miss. So try reading it to a certain point when you believe you wont like the novel at all. Me personally enjoy it a lot but maybe I just have tr*sh taste. <<less

The girl that want or want to get back her chicken give me some annoying feeling. I don't know why? I'll read other novel that started to meet some girl that have a annoying behaviour but didn't stop me from reading, it did not give me a bad feeling but for this...

Like just say that this girl will be annoying as the story continues. So I'll stop.

It's didn't mean that I don't like it. You stop reading this. This is my only opinion and maybe a just don't like a... more>> annoying female character. <<less
