This novel is really good; as of the current chapters translated it seems that the author wanted to build a really strong foundation for further development which is good but it feels like the setting up of the foundation is just overly extended, for all I know though the story could rapidly develop in the near future translated chapters but as of now if you really want to read a decent book that has a relatively stable foundation then I would say to try picking this one up.

While I do enjoy reading this novel, it seems that it follows the basic formula of any other novel. Offend powerful people, get sudden power boost, become OP, absolutely devastate them, rinse, and repeat.

The only reason that I don't give it a two star or even a one star is because I really enjoy reincarnation novels / transportation novels, (they're my fetish) and the story has some really good plot developments.

Fairly decent novel. Better than most of the garbage out there. I'd recommend it just for that. The story follows a stereotypical xuanhuan/xianxia plot but with enough twists to make it interesting. At least at first. I've read many other reviews that say the story goes downhill towards the middle/end but I haven't gotten that far yet

One of my favorite light novels currently. I like the main character and his thinking process. It can be annoying though when certain things that need to happen keep getting passed and paused. For spoiler reasons I won't go into more detail but it can just be a bit frustrating. Back to positives though, I enjoy how old characters don't just disappear like other novels of this kind. It's good to see old faces and them holding some relevance in the day to day management of things instead of just... more>> being forgotten and never mentioned because the main character is too strong. So overall, love the novel, the plot isn't anything to wrote about but the journey of it is awesome and I have been surprised on multiple occasions. Recommended read for sure. <<less

Enjoyable enough read with an ok MC. Support characters are good and at least not all of the villains are kindergarten acting sociopaths like most novels of the same genre BUT be prepared to read chapter after chapter of foreshadowing/conjecture/gossip until a fight or something eventful happens. The author writes a sentence 3 different ways and some chapters are excruciatingly slow. Too much word padding and conjecture sentences. So much useless sentences that it really grinds the story to a snail's pace.

I like the support characters and at least the... more>> arcs are not EXACTLY the same like other novels like this. Gonna try to read on but it's so freaking slow that I might skip chunks in every chapter! Good translator though. <<less

The novel does nothing new, and if you here for that you'll get disappointed. But if you're here for the classic xuanhuan experience you have come to the right place. The novel is good in a sense that unlike some of the other novels I read it doesn't try to dumbify the experience as much. The MC actually uses his brain to think. The fight scenes are descriptive and unique enough each time that keeps you from getting bored. The character development is passable. And overall a solid novel to... more>> pick up. <<less

I have some doubts about this novel at first. Until I finally give it a shot. You don't have to read many chapters before you fell in love with the MC. Right off the bat, the very first chapter, you will instantly fell in love with Jiang Chen. This novel rocks. Action-Adventure type, Phoenix, I must say, as Jiang Chen reincarnated, rising from the bottom to the top with many obstacles along the way and also many setbacks. Cold-headed MC. Author offers a feast for the imagination, affection and respect,... more>> with etvolare giving us our daily need of updates = Perfect. <<less

This novel has lots of elements typical for chinese webnovels including 1-dimensional arrogant antagonists, then lots of text being used to praise the MC for having overcome the aforementioned antagonists, before repeating this again on larger scales, often in tournaments.

The author also has an unfortunate habit of occasionally devoting too much attention to fights/matches which should be easy wins, but where the MC instead tends to "barely manage", under the guise of not wanting to expose the MC's full capabilities. The pacing can also at times seem slow.

That being said,... more>> I enjoy the novel quite a lot and would recommend it for the following reasons:

  • The MC is a genuinely nice guy, as opposed to MC's who seem to only interact with wives/friends while they are useful to him/her. He helps them develop and they often stay in the story, albeit with a gradually less important (read: practically insignificant) role. At while at the same time, he is not too extreme in rescuing people, forgetting everything else. This is surprisingly rare for a wuxia novel.
  • The MC is clever, using his knowledge and experience to outwit and defeat adversaries.
  • The author is good at weaving the story, using foreshadowing and pausing/resuming tasks in a sensible way, making the story less 1-dimensional.
  • The MC's cheat is strong, but with clear limitations (ie. Wrt cultivation). It is an extreme advantage, but at least it doesn't evolve randomly, just as the MC needs a powerup.

What I love in CNs is Confident Mcs. Sotr's MC is exactly like that. He never loses his composure no matter what. I really enjoy reading the novel but unfortunately as you read on It gets repetitive. That's why I give it 4 starts. Still one of the best novels on NU tho.

SOTR's MC sort of reminds me of the MC of 'TDG' or 'TTNH' in the way that the MC already has nigh infinite knowledge and thus infinite potential. The only difference being that the MC needs to accumulate his battle experience before transcending to the peak. This was an interesting twist to many wuxia novels, as most MC's are at completely different ends of the spectrum; either being naive and weak at first and thus become the characters they are due to the world of Jiang Hu and the experiences... more>> they attain (Meng Hao), or already have the battle experience and experience and is basically just a matter of tie for them to rise to the peak of cultivation (Nie Li).

This contrast in character archetypes allows authors to sculpt their stories according to their MC's, allowing for a mix of cultivation, fighting (killing all the arrogant young masters), romance, strategy. With characters that already have the experience and knowledge, the novel becomes more geared towards strategy and plots; think Jun Moxie (OEM). SOTR's take on this, while seemingly generic at first allowed for some unique experiences and plots which I haven't really seen before done in another novel. And around 200ish chapters, it allowed for some pretty good story telling and all in all, was an enjoyable read.

However, after 200ish chapters the novel become quite ban*l and boring, as the author began repeating and reusing wuxia stereotypes and cliches over and over and over. This part of the book was riddled with boring writing and story telling, 2 Dimensional characters who are forgotten almost instantly and terrible romances. It seemed like the author didn't plan ahead at all for the story and just threw in whatever he could think of. Later on though the story does tend to pick up and becomes pretty good.

TL:DR:

All in all, a decent novel, it has an incredible beginning with a really strong and different MC (at first), weak romances and a story that falls off during the middle put does pick itself up during later parts. I recommend to anyone new to wuxia novels or anyone who doesn't mind a slow middle. <<less

At the beginning, this novel seems like any other typical reincarnation LN. The plot is seemingly predictable and follows the same pattern - offend someone, unexpectedly beat them, inadvertently offend their backer, beat them again, win the competition, join a school, get picked on, rise to the top, move upwards, etc.

What makes SoTR different however, is its plot at the later stages (somewhere after chapter 600?). Compared to similar novels with their OP protagonists and rehashed arcs, SoTR changes it up with a fresh and unpredictable trajectory. Also, it is... more>> apparent that the backstory of the protagonist sets up the future of the novel and adds an element of mystery and anticipation.

The main character is likeable and mature, but that also means that he is rather one dimensional, as compared to other novels with far more cunning and witty characters. Granted, he displays some smarts in moments where he is being schemed against, but the overall behaviour of our protagonist is rather predictable. If you are looking for an anti-hero or an iconoclast, then Jiang Chen isn’t the one you are looking for.

Still, I’d recommend this to both new and experienced LN readers. Despite the repetitiveness, the character and world building in the story really starts to pay off after a certain point (unlike some other novels that continue to reuse the same trope even after 1000 chapters). I’m still enjoying this novel even at chapter 1000+, and it’s not because of sunk cost, so go ahead and give it a try! <<less

In most of these stories people that reincarnate have physical cheats. In this story he counts more on his knowledge he got in his past life its a interesting plot point that is handed correctly by the author, it doesn't feel like a Deus ex Machina to "Fix" his problems all the time.

In the start he outsmarts people most of the time but eventually when his cultivation is starting to get caught up he often uses brute force. Thankfully Jiang Chen doesn't get dumber as the story progresses what often... more>> happens with stories types like this which is a pleasant surprise.
There are 'mysteries' going on all around the story, for example how he got on this plane, and the story about the body's parents comes to mind. They all have a very slow payoff though, making it possible for the readers to forget the mysteries and being surprised if they suddenly get mentioned again.

all en all its a enjoyable "snack" story, It doesn't have much depth as some other stories out there but it keeps itself interesting and entertaining enough to keep the reader coming back for more.
So if you want a story that just wants to have fun and tell a interesting tale this might be the story for you.

Ps: I'm highly dyslectic so hopefully its readable. <<less

I will be the alchemist that will wring this story's essence into a glass, boil it into vapor (huff a bit), and distill it into multiple vials for you to drink. It's no glass of champagne, but a can of chilled coke on a summer day after you finish fishing for good novels. So, it's still up to you to decide whether you enjoy the taste or not.

Jiang Chen. A Celestial Prince reborn into the body of a farting loser.

He's a smart one, with tongue sharp enough to leave scars,... more>> women blushing, and men hiding. Donning plot armor, he can smash through walls of conspiracy and enemies like the Kool-Aid man. His hands are callous enough to leave eternal red marks on the faces of his enemies. Arcs go by fast. Like any other MC, Jiang Chen goes to better and stronger places, and you follow intently, with a smile on your face, seeking for more, hoping for more.

  • Genius Cultivator
  • Hangs many talents under his belt: Alchemist/Healer, Genius Cultivator, etc
  • Face slapping almost every chapter
  • Cultivation levels are simple to follow
The story follows Jiang Chen decimating every antagonist in his path with ease... a little too much ease. Cultivation levels prove to be no obstacle for our MC. Make no mistake, he's a Mary Sue after all - he is the son of the Heavenly Emperor. He gains followers like a magnet in a sea of needles. By playing the underdog, too many arrogant opponents face regret. The romance is written in a lacking manner; jade beauties are bland. Some tropes are used with no twist like drugging Jiang Chen.

Overall, the translators work fast, making it a daily read for me. Relax. Take a sip. Enjoy and don't think too much, ok? <<less

First off, I am the kind of person that likes long stretched out novels that can be binged with great build up and all sorts of mechanisms falling into place for all over the universe that the author creates and I feel that SOTR fits that niche rather well. While all the long novels do have this element sometimes they over do it and skip stuff or make us lose interest, but for me SOTR balances it all out rather well. But I do have to warn you, there is... more>> always this bit after the end of the arc where you are like okay thats that and lose interest only to come back much later and realize how much you need to catchup.

Jiang Chen with all his worldly knowledge from his past life is not overly arrogant but arrogant to the point where he knows how to deal with any situation. Even in fights it is mostly a cool composed guy dishing out his skills, rather than a full blown out fight it feels more like a cool, composed game of chess. Although at times the reader may feel like he uses others to his advantage too much, which he does very much so infact, when you come to accept it as one of his qualities you begin to overlook it.
Spoiler

There was even a moment forgive me I do not recall exactly when he had pulled out all his cards and had been beaten. He threw his arms up and was ready to accept death as it is and this is as far as he got. Of course some miracle happened and he got through but that moment stuck with me for some reason, rather than fighting it through it, nakama power whatever and refusing death he accepted it.

[collapse]
Which I feel all in all fits in with this cool, composed style that he brings to the table every chapter. Cool and composed maybe a recurring style in many MC's for example Wang Lin from Renegade Immortal, but Jiang Chen brings a different side of cool and composed.

If there is anything I find lacking it would be the lack of real threat, I never do feel that he or his side cast are ever in danger. Oh and sometimes characters are blatantly annoying even if they are supposed to be on your side, only to be covered by they are doing it for the best of so and so.
Spoiler

Seriously that Plumscore Monarch really annoyed the heck out of me in Chapter 1001.

[collapse]
Did I mention the translation team does a top notch job at this and keeps pumping out chapters consistently. I love that everyday when I open WW there will be atleast one chapter for me to read up on. Oh and etvo's awesome!

If you decide to pick this up, Cheers! <<less

SOTR is a very captivating story, and a fresh breath of air for someone like me, who's just spent an eternity reading MGA. In the last couple of hundred chapters, it's begun to draw out more in the story, and the progression is slower. I don't particularly mind this, since chapters are posted very regularly, but it does kind of suck to have the same thing explained to you in 5 different ways to fill a whole chapter. All in all, the story is very good, and it's a joy... more>> to follow Jiang Chen in his adventures, but it is not well written by any means. 5 stars for the storyline, -2 for the lack of good writing <<less

While TDG was the story that brought me into wuxia, SOTR was the one that made me fall in love with it. Granted, it has the same "formula" as similar stories with an MC that reincarnated. MC has a whole repertoire of skills in his memory at his disposal, has amazing comprehension skills, pill dao is off the charts etc, is from the heavenly luck sect etc. There are also quite a few filler chapters which are excruciatingly painful.

But, SOTR has interesting story lines that are different from your standard... more>> stories. Not all arcs are about power leveling. There is adventuring, scheming, face slapping (my personal favorite), showing off amazing pill dao. You get the drift. This variety helps to break the monotony of some parts of the stories.

Also, the harem is kind of low key (unless we're talking about his old man harem) where the MC doesnt just have s*x with every pretty female he meets, which I appreciate.

The translator for SOTR, Etvolare, is generally a great person from what I see, especially when he releases bonus chapters (which happens more often than not!)

So if you're wondering whether you should pick up SOTR, stop hesitating and just start!! <<less

Sovereign of the Three Realms, is, at best, a very average Chinese webnovel. The progression is very typical of a webnovel, which is the MC having a cheat at the beginning (in this case, again, the overused but also decently mapped out reincarnation, as anyone can see in the synopsis). He gets chased by someone who thinks they are stronger than him, then BLAM! Jiang Chen gets the very unanticipated and obviously predicted comeback that may or may not be accompanied with a subsequent powerup.

Overall, a decent read for passing... more>> the time, but not anything amazingly good (and definitely not unique).

Any potential reader who is reading this review, let me tell you: You have probably read the synopsis. You already have a sense that this novel has a repetitive format like many of the other Chinese webnovels you have read, as well as all the other reviews complaining about this exact problem. The problem is, so what? Chinese webnovels are a medium of entertainment that is meant to help one pass the time and not end up chronically bored, and isn't meant to have expectations of masterworks placed on them.

Just read it.

You will realise it's the same as the other 5 novels you are probably following a few tens of chapters in. You will realise that its a waste of time. Then again, most other forms of entertainment is a waste of time. If you are wasting your time reading through reviews of a Chinese webnovel, might as well waste the time actually reading it, right?

tl;dr Just read it. <<less

Definitely an enjoyable story. Like many other Wuxia novels however, there are a lot of dumb young master moments, and the power grind is pretty annoying.

One of my only complaints is that it always feels like the MC is way behind everyone else in levels.

Still, an enjoyable read, and a friendly translation group makes the story a worthwhile time investment.

Sovereign of the three realms is one of the better Wuxia novels I have read over the past few years. The main character is generally a little more level-headed than most counterparts, exercising more restraint and generally putting a bit more thought into his actions. However, that said as with most of these novels he does have an endless array of amazing, get-out-of-jail-free esque abilities that let him easily overcome most conflicts he encounters. While he is supposedly always in dire situations where no normal person would be able to... more>> escape unscathed, he always miraculously pulls through with no real consequences. This is a common trope but it feels quite overused in this novel particularly.

As other reviewers mentioned, the author seems mostly fixated on using skills to emphasize the main character's brilliance rather than showing him as a particularly great strategist/diplomat/negotiator, which he should be given his background. Such things may be harder to write and thus the author may default to just coming up with some way to either use existing abilities or create new ones in order for the main character to get out of the predicament he is in. This can cause the novel to feel a bit stale at times, and I often find the instances where he has to rely on other areas of his skillset far more interesting.

That said, the main character does have more to him than a lot of other characters in similar novels and does have other skills and knowledge that he does fall back on. These are usually used as plot armor, but most of these novels are around 80% plot armor anyways. Honestly, give any of the antagonists in these novels a fortuitous encounter and they could probably be a main character just by virtue of everyone being so samey.

So if you're okay with a novel about a multitalented (flawless as far as these novels are considered) character, give this a shot. Worst case scenario you won't like it and will drop it after a few chapters, but it might be different enough to give you some entertainment. <<less

So far this is one of my favorite novels on wuxiaworld. One area that this novel excels at is the character development. Sure, MC has a standard xianxia 'cheat' but overall the authors treatment of this 'cheat' is relatively good. The novel reminds me a lot of ED, but I think this one does several things better, including setting, and the later arcs don't drag on as much as the ED arcs do.
