This story is pretty good in all concepts. The MC is not OP but just really good at using his brain. Sure he is broken and not better then many of the other adventurer. Yet, he does have one main advantage, which you will have to read on the licensed volumes.

Also, POV changes a lot but tends to be Goblin Slayer or the Priestess.

But I will say this about GB, despite only killing the most evil (yet weak physically) monster and calling himself as only a goblin slayer, he is... more>> a hero to the common people.

I just love this history. As I'm reading I can imagine it as if I was watching a film.

Also, this history has nothing to do with the typical empowerment of the goblin race as a typical videogame race.

It's like the Dark Souls version of "I live in a fantasy world". I can only add that you have to read it.

There are some aspects of this LN that, in my opinion, give it an edge compared to the large majority of LNs I've been reading so far. There are spoilers ahead, but mostly about the writing style.

Spoiler
  • For one, most of the characters introduced keep being relevant through the volumes, reappearing later, be it in side-stories or with the main cast again. This is important to me because I'm a little tired of LNs which spend chapters and chapters with random character only for them to die s*upidly and rarely be mentioned again (I'm looking at you, Overlord).
  • On the same note, the main cast is relatively small and tight-knit, the chemistry between them is nice and you can see steady development and growth (albeit with some Flanderizations, like the Lizardman Priest and "OMG, I CAN'T STOP EATING CHEESE!").
  • The story, thus, doesn't lose much of the reader's time with spam text, almos every line is relevant to the story and interesting to read: the battle scenes are well constructed, the heroes' mistakes can carry heavy consequences, and the moments of rest feel well earned.

While there are some clichés and fanservice, I this LN much less loaded with this than other works, so far. If you like RPG settings without too much Japanization, this is a very good read. Also, while I like Isekai works, the fact that this is a nice novel and is not an Isekai is a big plus. <<less

Spoiler

Started as a pretty dark one, a simple girl, priestess starting as adventurer in a party that had potential for heroes, the gods getting a bad roll (sending out bad luck) and the party gets demolished and the GS saves the priestess. Priestess finds GS emotionally broken and tags along with him and try to cheer him. Starting V2, the author tries to make a dark mood and destroys it repeatedly using the three tag-along high level adventurers that decide to tag with GS because he's interesting. It really spoils the expectations made from the pure dark mood of V1. Starting V3, it starts becoming OP goblins and goblins tagging along with other monsters. And the story shifts to GS spending time with girls who have romantic feeling for him but is oblivious to the romantic feelings. It starts becoming very lighthearted from V2, when author starts with making ppl around GS try and fail to make him live a normal life instead of obsessing on goblins.

[collapse]
The presentation and delivery is superb and I like how author makes GS only repeat around 5-7 lines 90% of times despite being a main character. Its an interesting read when you see new tricks of GS but the hopes built by V1 will be dashed after reading V2 and It goes downhill from then. Still I recommend to read V1 if you are looking for some good quality dark mood novel but don't continue from V2 lest you want to splash cold water on your hopes

This was an interesting read for me. So it would be a 5.5 out of 10 for me. Not meh, but not quite as a good read as other LN I have read.

As the title suggest, this LN is about MC wanting to kill goblins. His character doesn't change very much even after 9 volumes. So characters in this story don't change very much with very few exceptions. For me, the appeal of this LN was seeing the different ways that goblin slayer would use to defeat the goblins. Compared... more>> to the manga or the anime, the LN is less brutal but still gets dark. Another nice thing about this LN is that goblin slayer isn't c*cky and knows very well that he can be defeated at any time. Which is why he prepares himself so well and uses more creative methods to kill goblins when he knows he is too weak to face them head on. This is not an op MC that can simply stroll in and kill everything in their path with ease. The MC simply does his best to be as efficient as he can and avoids putting himself in situations that places him at a disadvantage. Since this makes up the main part of the LN, it is good that the author put some thought into this. However, it is also a bit of a downfall as well. Story can feel a bit repetitive.

One thing that bothered me while reading this LN is that the author feels the need to describe Goblin Slayer each time he enters a scene with the same mini paragraph. If it were just the first two volumes, then I could let it go as author setting up how the world sees Goblin Slayer. However, this continues on until the 9th volume, so it soon begin to feel like boring filler that I just skip over.

It is a bit weird how names are never used, just their class like apprentice cleric, priestess, or High elf. I got used to it after a volume but at times, it can be a bit confusing when reading. Mostly when people with similar classes are in the story at the same time. So I have pause for a bit to see whether or this this the same warrior that was there the previous volume or a different guy. <<less

Only the goblin slayer can kill goblins and be completely fine from the moment he started and everyone else always die or fail.

None of the characters are given a name only titles or descriptions

Novel has multiple pov, and the story is described trough multiple characters, but the same events are told trough different characters so there is a lot of repeating and it's like you are re-reading a lot of the story
GS is a dark and strange novel about goblins, a mystery, a lot of cliche scenes.
There are lot of plot holes and unexplained events.

It's alright, the later volumes get very stale though. The same 10 odd sentences are used constantly for "comedic" effect, this of course stops being funny after you've read it for the fifth time after having read it seven times in a prior volume. Even dialogue that isn't there to be comedic is used constantly.

The characters grow a miniscule amount each volume with some of the main- and side cast staying the exact same as they were since the start.

The settings change, but the fights don't.

That's all

It's a great dark fantasy (grim dark) novel with an realistic take that even the worst tr*sh monster can be dangerous, in this case usually goblins.

The MC is an average Adventurer that because of his past, wants to take revenge against all the goblins.

All fights he gets into are always tactical, he devises a plan and solution for even the smallest detail. While using a huge amount of tools, traps and ruthless methods to decimate the enemy.

The character development is minimal but steady throughout the volumes (emotionless => some emotion).... more>> The side characters, especially his teammates, are fairly fleshed out. The magic system is D&D oriented with a limited amount of spell uses each day. <<less

The writer is good at describing the character's movement, the environment and their daily lives, but the downside is that the character interaction felt forced and feels unnatural and the magic system is cool but at the same time bs. Magic being only able to use a few times a day is great, but the way they obtained is bs and spoilers, when gs ask who can use magic, dwarf, pritress and lizard shaman all replied yes and elf archer said she can't use magic. But, in vol 2, she... more>> was suddenly able to use magic. <<less

The novel definitely deserve a high rate but not perfect.

Though side characters don't have any huge depths, they aren't bad as well since most of them, if not all, are distinguishable in a rather likable way as they interact to each other.

MC is very likable in its own way. He isn't OP but he try to get things done resourcefully, efficiently and sometimes creatively in his own way which makes action compelling when he is involve. He has a light, if not severe, case of autism and the novel repeatedly... more>> use this as sub-plot instance which you will eventually get feed up.

The plot is simple but it's not that bad. Though it may be simple, it done a great job in portraying a dark fantasy world. I may have labeled it dark fantasy but it's undeniable that it still has its good sides as well such as bonding chapters (in v3 & v4). The plot feels so flat because it lacks aesthetic and drama (emotion). Action in the novel may be engaging but any other than that is plain and almost boring because MC is only 'specialize' in action. Though his autism can create enjoyable moment of interaction, it's easy to get feed up by it. The 'simple' plot is not helping either in the later run.

THE START IS GOOD AND FRESH BUT IT SLOWLY STARTED TO BECOME REPETITIVE AFTER v2.

One more thing, the novel didn't gave each person a name and it really bothers me. Though it did it with intention for its own way of narrating, I often times subconsciously feel that all characters are flat because of it. <<less
