The story sucks at the beginning, but it turns out better since +- ch.150 when the Bo city incident happened. I like the MC traits and how the author doesn't make him a shaming character.

Background and world setting were also confusing, but after some chapters it's easier to enjoy. Romance wasn't really focused, but if you're looking for a badass MC (with a moderate growth), this is your kind of novel.

I read this a long time ago and reread it again, since someone started translating. And to be honest I'm not even sure anymore why I read this. I usually like to read things with the MC being op and didn't care about much else but quite frankly this MC is ret*rded to the point I can't over look it. The story has too many info dumps that I find it hard at times understanding their magic cultivation system, not to mention the MC never usually thinks before he does... more>> things. He usually just does stuff and plot armor covers him, at this point I'm still trying to wrap my head around him hiding his powers when if he had revealed them all his issues would have been solved immediately... but yeah lets just follow the author as he tries to put the underdog tag on the MC bcuz the MC has it so hard. <<less

Honestly, 5/10. It's not bad overall but it's gut obvious plot faults that make reading it tedious. The entire cultivation system is mundane and annoying. The main characters don't make it that much better and reaccuring characters don't add much more variety. Fight scenes are kind of lame & the MC lacks common sense.

Overall, sure give it a read. If you enjoy waiting ridiculously long amounts of time for each release.

I give up. I have been close to giving up 10+ times and I finally did it. There are so many issues with the story that it isn't even possible to list all of them. From the illogical world where living conditions don't align with the tech of the world. To the Chinese corrupt officials being the norm globally and tons of the MC flirting with all women around him but not actually being interested.

What really broke me wasn't any of the glaring issues with not being married to two... more>> women that wants to marry, even though that was a clearly stated goal. It wasn't the world being built as the story progressed instead of being explored, from a super mage being VERY rare to there being thousands of them in China. It was the content loop that did me in. I could not stand the fights any longer, they are so utterly boring at this point that I honestly skip most of them. I did not care about the random plot points explored, there to show time passing between the major events. Basically there is a small trigger for an investigation, this leads to a large fight. Short wind down and repeat, nobody important is dies and nothing important happens. The last thing with large impact to the story was when he got his first companion around chapter 500. Since then things has happened but none of it has been very important to the story overall in my opinion.

It kind of reads as an open world or MMO game. Where you keep doing side quests and sometimes drop back into the main story line with your group of trusty followers. Then go for a small side mission and view the countryside. If only the author was good enough to make all of them engaging this might work.

I still rate it as 3/5 since I kept up with it for over 25 000 pages. There is something about finding out the next small plot point, skipping half the content until you hit it. Reading a chapter or two and repeating. It pushes you forward even when there is no reason you should keep going. A large part of it is likely the sunken cost fallacy as well, once you invest the initial 40 hours reading it you are likely to keep going since you want to know what happens next.

The thing that kept me going the last 3 000 pages before I dropped it was random theory crafting about builds. What would have been the greatest types of magic to get if you got 2 per rank. Then the super powers and other random stuff started dropping in, wrecking the entire magic system. Then not even that was interesting. <<less

It's one of the few web novels that I haven't dropped, and actually the longest thing I have ever read, but I like it. The plot is interesting, the leveling is not fast nor slow and the MC is powerfull but not invencible (at least not until the end).

so this for me would be 4 or 4.5 stars... the story is good and many people calling the MC tr*sh, like 30% of fantasies that ive read the MC are arrogant and very confident on his own powers, so basically mo fan is normal for me. in terms of the story, its not finished, you could say its finished but not really there are a lot of things that got left behind or left unanswered, which left me dissatisfied... so these are few, from now these are spoilers so... more>> if you dont know about the "true totems", and do not wish to be spoiled any further then dont read...

first is the emperor level beast in the south (north??) pole that melted the ice that resulted to the high tides, iykyk... that guy was never defeated nor did we even see what it was, the closest was the arc where we saw mu ningxue's povs, which was ch 2900+ and she didnt even fight it, I wouldve thought they would fight it there, with all the forbidden mages as well as mo fan, and mu ningxue who (i think) already grasped her bow... so I really thought they would fight it there, so like after the holy city conflict arc, the story was basically already finished. which it shouldnt have been

second is the temple, in the bonus story (which was dropped, im pretty sure it the novel hasnt been updated for more than 2 years now) you know the egyptian temple, the novel was dropped midway that arc, where mo fan and multiple other forbidden mage tried to subjugate the egyptian temple but got stuck (locked) in the temple, then ling ling was on her way to help them, then the story cuts off haha I really wanted to see what wouldve happen

third is the versatility of the mc's powers, yes I know +2 every level up would make him just a little bit more balanced, but I feel like it wouldve been better if he awakened with 2, then in his next level up it doubles and so on, so in the super level he would have 16 elements, and in the forbidden stage he would have all 20 elements, or something like that, it could be, /2 - 5 - 10 - 15 - 20/ it couldve been that way or something else, but as long as he could wield all elements when hes a forbidden mage, cause in the novel, mo fan had 8 in super level, then when he stepped into the forbidden mage level he unlocked all the primary magic, and sound magic, making him able to wield 13 elements, this leads to my 4th problem.

fourth is there might be another level above forbidden, we already know that there are gods, and there are already characters that have become gods -xinxia's father- and mo fan is already a half god, that would mean that he is already on his way to become a god, that could also mean that he would unlock more elements after stepping into the god realm, and there is also mu bai who is connected to the dark king (??) I wanted to see what would happen to him eventually...

i know the author was probably scared to write any further, cause seriously when a novel goes to the level of gods and the MC becomes a god, most of the time it becomes quite boring, cause the other characters would just be thrown aside, and only the MC and the antagonist, would have screen time, and I understand that, but hey its fine ig... the story was long enough already, and the businesses on earth that would bother mo fan would become so little, so the story would have to introduce a new dimension or sumn, and like I said most novels become boring at that point, so in some way the story is somewhat finished and left to our imagination when mo fan would deal with the temple and the emperor level beasts out there... or maybe the author just really dropped the story because they didnt like it anymore lol <<less

I don't know why most people doesn't seem to give some chance on this novel. Though the story isn't your typical well knowned plot but the plot is actually good, people just stop at some point when they're already bored, let me tell you that story isn't about fighting consecutively, I mean of course that's already inevitable since the novel has the quality to be a good one.

Really good novel so far and I definitely recommend it.

First, the novel has a lot of foreshadowing throughout the entire novel

Spoiler

For example how at the beginning Xinxia metioned the history of Bo City and how it used to be a village of a tribe that moved away from the other villages near the Ancient City, why the Black Vatican wanted the Underground Holy Spring Water, and the Water of Kun

[collapse]

Some character development especially Zhang Xiaohou after the Bo City clamity and that He girl dying in front of him

Also although he's the main character and is pretty op it's not THAT exaggerated like when there's like a super strong commander-level monster he, a intermediate level mage DOESN'T try to fight it and instead leaves it to the super-level or advance-level mages

EXCEPT

Spoiler

When his contract beast, the Flame Belle comes out and just destroys everything. I know that it's like the King of Fire but it's still in it's baby stage so how can ONE PUNCH defeat a commander level???
