I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated (WN)

Description

I opened my eyes to find myself in another world. But for some odd reason, I ended up as a sword. Before my eyes laid a plain full of magic beasts, and so, I launched my body and flew in search of a partner, a wielder (females only).

Wait. Absorbing magic stones gets me skills? Oh hell yeah! This will be fun! More, more, give me more! Gimme all your magic stones! Okay, yeah no, but I am accepting anything anyone’s willing to give.

This tale is one that follows your everyday nerd, normal as could be, save for the fact that he happened to reincarnate as a sword.

Although the story was slow during the first chapters due to the sword hunting skills. The story went up a notch when he or it met with Fran.

As of now the story is kinda slow after going out of the city and meeting up with the dead guy so lets see what happens

I was told that this story got better as it went along and... no, it didn't. However, in my first review I didn't explain the reason why very well (well, I'm always mostly intoxicated for most of the times, in fact I still am right now).

This series suffers from what I would call the "Bleach Effect" (does anyone even rbr Bleach anymore T.T). I have read about like 70-80ish chaps, since my first review (I'll keep my previous simpleminded thoughts in the spoiler section). What I mainly mean... more>> by the Bleach effect (look at this smug a*s making fun of multi-million dollar franchise, to those I say... Twilight was the same and people still sh*t on it.), the bleach effect, is simply a story that has no drive to it. The story has nowhere to go. It doesn't have a narrative like: pirate king or hokage. The story will continue for the sake of continuing, with the next thing to beat or the next problem. A plot is an end goal, it is where you, no, the story will eventually finish or keep trying to achieve even if it ends mid-way or things just change. So this story is purely an endurance test; you will read it till you get tired (with 343+ chaps and still going, huh? I guess I'm not wrong). I'm not saying that the story will never have a plot in the future, I am saying that the plot will not be the center of it. One of the only series that does this more or less competently is... well, One piece. It has a vague, plot characters with the motivation and reasons (very important) to follow the said plot.

My second gripe with the series is all the a*s-pulls, I mean the magic in the series is out of control. It just does everything the author wants it to do, I mean it tries to be a video game as well as real life. I mean even Donmachi, had a more believable magic system. If in this world some can regrow an arm and leg with high enough healing magic, what is there to stop people from being able to resurrect people from the dead? You know, there was another story that started like as well? DBZ. A manga so infamous for characters sabotaging themselves for the sake of creating tension. If you can revive people from the dead, most dangers after that are kinda meaningless. So, in this world if you don't know a good healer, you're f***ed.

My final gripes are with the characters and tone. Tone is all over the place. It really doesn't know where it wants to be. It doesn't know if it wants to be very childish or edgy and flip flops all the time sometimes even in the middle of life and death situations (in some fights they have very s*upid banter, even when their enemy is super strong). Characters are s*upid, bland and archetypes. They have a screwed personality, especially the protagonist and have no defined morals. Even after like what 80 chaps, all I know is that cat girl loves food and fight, and sword is a lolicon/father archetype.

Spoiler

How bad can a story really be? This is a question that all writers must face during the making of their craft (it's obvious that I have no idea where I wanted to with this nonsense). It's bad. Real bad.

I can only guess that this was written by a man-child (also definitely a deviant with anger issues), who has basic education (like middle school perhaps high school? if it is high school god plz help him). Really disappointing when you can feel that there is a lot of heart in the story, however I also play the guitar with a lot of heart and nobody is hiring me.

Might get better, might get worst. However, I got all I need to know from a few chapters. It isn't for adults or children but teens. Escapist teens that is. If you like that sort of stories well you might like it.

The Story is about a sword getting stronger though battle. The character's lack chemistry, typical Japanese character with cooking filler from time to time. But when the female lead is a 12-year-old s*ave girl, you can't expect good dialog.

But I still enjoyed the story so far since I wondered just how much more overpowered the sword will become. And that is what drives me to continue reading this story. As for the rest, I don't expect anything other than typical Japanese shenanigans.

I was reading the Seven Seas translation, which doesn't split things up into the original chapters but rather groups them into one large chapter. So I'm not sure exactly which chapter I was on before I quit, though it was just after returning to civilization with Fran.

Although the "I'm a sword" gimmick is moderately interesting, the way it's treated feels like it isn't exploring its potential. The protagonist can kill things perfectly fine on his own, and the only reason why Fran wields is... I dunno, he was bored? The... more>> way everything is handled feels perfectly generic.

And these generic beats are executed very boringly. The prose reads like someone telling you about grinding in a video game they play and you don't. Even once Fran is introduced, the plot still skips over non-fighting things so quickly that there's no opportunity to care about her character as anything other than Party Member 2.

Also... after the protagonist returns to civilization, there's a conversation where a merchant tells him the equivalent of "goblins are always chaotic evil" and the protagonist wonders if that's really true... after he spent the last hundred pages and several weeks (my estimation, at least) slaughtering them with the sole justification of being annoyed by the way they look and act.

Like. It would be one thing if he and the story just neatly assume that standard JRPG world tropes apply and humanoid monsters are just monsters. It's a bit weird of a thing to quickly gloss over for a modern man, but I can live with genre assumptions. It's another thing entirely to have the protagonist only consider "maybe goblins aren't always chaotic evil" after a hundred pages of slaughtering them for the most sociopathic reason! This makes the protagonist immensely unlikable in a way I sincerely doubt the author was smart or creative enough to intend.

This is an idiot plot, in the sense that it makes me wonder if the author is an idiot. <<less

This is a pretty wholesome father/daughter relationship novel.

The novel starts with the MC being reincarnated into a sword. And after messing around a little, he met Fran after she saved him from being stuck. Which begins their master/student relationship that's more like a father and daughter's.

There is really nothing much I can say about this novel besides that its wholesome. The characters introduced aren't really interesting, there's almost no character development, and the slice of life parts are really boring.

While slice of life in fantasy novels can be used for... more>> world-building and exploring different cultures, this novel doesn't do that at all. Instead, most of it is focused on food and cooking, which is, personally, the most boring and common slice of life stuffs like you can write.

The fights scenes are pretty good though. The MC really uses everything in his arsenal for the fights, and the actions are written really well.

The plot isn't really complicated, but it's not braindead either. This novel is a really good one if you are searching for a father/daughter novel to read. <<less

Super powered cheat parenting but not very smart sword with dull orphan s*ave kid who have sad background story but nothing worth mentioning otherwise.

Good read while you don't have anything to do, though don't expect much from this one.

Fran strike me as 1 dimension cliché character: Naïve borderline idiotic (although reasonable since she's young), ignorance, cool-edgy type, glutton, battle-maniac. Cute? Only according to the talking sword (or author) likely they repeatedly calling her cute hoping readers would thought so too and attached to her after a long while.

I'm in chapter... more>> 321 so far and there's no character development whatsoever for both of them, aside from they getting stronger, more like character decline instead. It cringe me when she just blabber every secret she has (including the sword's) to some random princess she just met because she wanna be her friend.

The more into the story, the more stronger and s*upid they become, and the MC (Talking sword) who supposedly the adult here and responsible to stop her from making s*upid decisions, instead going "ah, I can't stop her so imma support her (s*upidity) instead" like what?

It's good they don't do the hundred chapters training arc so far, at least there is some adventure so it's bearable to read for me, although it's a little too predictable now,

They go somewhere → something shady happen as a sign of future trouble → the trouble actually happening → they're not capable enough to end the trouble → Fran insist on solving it while the sword try to stop her but eventually agree to her reckless decision → some help/miracle stuff happen → trouble solved everyone good and happy → insert slice of life stuff here where she eat tons of stuff and whatnot → they said goodbye → she goes to somewhere else → repeat.

Edit: Chapter 655 here, and gosh, they are on a secret-spreading spree route, *facepalm*

"Hey there stranger, I'm Fran, and this is Master, an Intelligent sword, My parents died, and I was a s*ave, I'm on a journey to became strong so I can kill S-Class Fiend to save my kind from a curse that prevent their evolution, btw there's Divine beast, Ex-Divine sword and sealed God inside master, nice to meet you..." <<less

Story is mostly about a shortsighted and casual japanese guy, playing the role of a father figure to a loli beastkin s*ave as a magic sword. She slowly grows into a battle junky. + Some slice of life~

MCs casualness sets the theme, shortsightedness creates the issues the story strive to conquer, any mistakes gets hard retconned with casual writing with even worse half a55ed translations.

the story is fine when compared to the recent status quo however the translations by cardboard are merely interpretations with a lot of the sentences beginning... more>> with ohshits and ends with god damn with F-bombs used nore than ww2. Like some 12yr old banchopunk talking as if he finds it funny. I doubt the original raw have any words that are directly translated that swears that much. <<less

Read the light novel, so opinions might differ

If you ask me what I thought at the beginning, I'd say this was boring as hell. Dude reincarnates as a sword, and goes around grinding a lot. We don't get any reason as to why he's a sword or why he reincarnates there, although we might find out later. It's been three volumes and not much has changed so you'll probably have to find out way later.

I dropped it because I couldn't get into it even after all the pointless grinding in... more>> the beginning. He meets a s*ave girl and saves her, and like a lot of light novels, of course this first girl he meets is going to become an important character that the MC will keep helping and make them stronger (How not to summon a Demon Lord, Skeleton Knight, Demon Lord Retry!) for no reason other than the fact they're "super nice". I don't understand why these MCs don't have any goal other than just helping out a bunch of girls. (Not that that's bad but it's 3 volumes of a sword just helping out a girl for no reason at all)

The plot doesn't change much even after three novels, MC and the girl just go around a lot, and they're very op and whatnot but the girl gets underestimated a lot just because she's op and it's kind of infuriating how often the author adds this in. It doesn't happen as much as Average Abilities, but at least the girl ranks up unlike the girls in that book.

Overall 3/5 because it's still kind of interesting to see a talking sword, but really I'd recommend you to read the Spider isekai or Overlord over this if you want an interesting skill system and better world building. <<less

honestly, the concept was fun at the start but it gets progressively boring to read as the sword gets more and more OP on his own.

the dependence on the wielder also eventually disappears and causes the novel to lose it's only unique setting.

I really liked her.

The translation is pretty good with a 5/5. If there's a Japanese term the TL usually puts it at the bottom of the chapter.

The setting is that of another world and don't expect a easy world, ok?

All in all, I'd recommend this to a close friend if they asked me if there was a interesting story out there. <<less

I'm not sure why but some people want the MC to grind like its a game for years on end because fran holds him back raa like... have you ever not talked with anyone for a long amount of time? you do know that's how you go crazy right? also in later chapters they are crazy strong as a pair

the skills at the start are a bit out of hand, but its not talked about later I think the author cooled down lol..

One thing I want tho is for Fran to open up a little bit as she does kind of come off as inhuman (beast man) at times

As much as I would like to read more, I just can't get the plot nor paint a picture with the narrative I'm given. Here's the takeaway: The MC is supposed to be a sword that can move, fly, see his own stats... And MC can also see himself [how?], use magic [tolerable.], can take skills from others... basically a cluster-f*ck of how, why, and "didn't I see that cheat used in another novel?". One thing is for sure, that childish protagonist tag is correctly placed.

I tried really hard to like this story after reading the first ~3 chapters of the manga. Story takes off when he meets Fran a child catgirl s*ave whom he decides to help to make her dream of evolving, which her parents died trying to accomplish.

However, the story falls a bit flat because before the MC even met Fran he killed and stole the skills of one of the most dangerous and high level monster infested area. I really wish it focused more on Fran since she's a catgirl from... more>> a fantasy world and not another Japanese guy who died from a car. I want to learn more about this new fantasy world and how it works not about the weird hang ups from otaku Japanese sword dude.

I wish the sword wasn't so OP in stealing all the skills and giving it to the girl. I wish it was more creative with the skills used and wasn't so on the nose and brute forced. The skills and abilities feel a bit earth shattering and made up as the story goes along. I find the sword and the girl's relationship to be quite cute and hope it doesn't go down the lolicon route.

My biggest problem with this story is just that the tone is all over the place. Like some other reviews mentioned, the catgirl is sometimes kind and a child while other times a merciless killer who tries her hardest and at times is really self motivated. The MC is a loner otaku that doesn't trust anyone except when he meets cute girls or the story needs him to. Lots of wasted potential in this story for me. <<less

This mostly features an sword with a beast-lover lolicon personality which was inherited from earth. I think that MC makes a lot of not-so-good choices, but every MC does that. I also believe that the author is pushing himself too hard to increase chapters because there isn't much plot.

It's really fun. The first chapter is all about the sword appearing in the world and killing monsters and explaining abilities, which lays the groundwork for the rest of the volume. I like this story because there's no nonsensical harem or shitty romance, instead we get a father-daughter relationship which is incredibly cute and fun to watch. Fran is a s*ave who finds the sword and frees herself, and then wants to reach 'Evolution' as the first of her species in doing so. Sword, "Teacher", wants to help her and... more>> cares for her like a father. It's basically a story about these two meeting people, joining the guild, killing monsters, going to cities, and it seems there's an overarching plot behind it all but it hasn't been revealed as of yet. Either way, it's a 10/10 for me. <<less

a story about 12 yo girl traveling to discover about his future evolution and became sadistic. It was really good when she began torturing someone :D, but at some point the concept power is imbalance (number status and skill).

one thing make me wondering is when fran was has some money but only buy necessity for master once time and still never buy again.
