In a distant future, the empires of mankind span the galaxy, and glorious Earth has devolved into a peripheral backwater.

In Shanjing city in the Asian region, Wang Zheng’s dreams of becoming a mech pilot are crushed when his college entrance exam genetic score turns out a pathetic twenty eight, barely above an animal.

To make things worse, people get the impression he attempted su*cide after being rejected by the campus beauty.

Then the closest thing to a family he has, the old man in the book store across the road, goes missing, leaving him only a mysterious birthday present.

When I first started reading this, I didn't know it was the third and last part in a trilogy. While the second part (Tempest of the Battlefield) is translated, I don't believe the first part is. I therefore can't say that there was much reference to them, but it feels like there was in places, especially the second. This caused me to have a missing something feeling, especially with the two robots that train the MC, that stayed with me.

With school tournament after school tournament, I basically got sick and... more>> tired of this story. From one school into another, and then into another, oh my god author, pick another setting!

From the growth the MC got at the starting 20-50 chapters, the rest of the story felt like it was just a chance for all of the others to climb up to his level. It honestly got boring to see him win again and again, to everyone's disbelief, only for another competition to come around the corner and give them all a chance again. To which, they lose. And then another competition. Lose. Another try. Again and again and again.

Up the ante, change the villain, do something different. Get out of the school setting!

Worst part is, I've seen similar complaints in reviews for the second story, so I've not got much hope there either.

With just 50 chapters read, I can see is the same repeated Plot as the prequel (Underdog Face Slapping), with some changes, if you read the prequel and then this one in succession, you can feel what I try to say.

I will continue until the end, but I already can give it a 2 out of 5, I already can see where this is going and how it will end. I rated the Prequel 3 stars so rating the sequel 2 star for being a disguised copypaste is good enough.

Just... more>> another wish fulfillment Novel dressed up as Mecha, Scifi.

Ps: 200+ 5* star votes? Does the Author ask the community to create accounts just to vote 5* stars and elevate the rating of their low effort novels? <<less

In a word - dull. In many words - poor characters, poor world building, poor pacing.

Characters -

  • Wang Zheng (our protagonist) has shown no real growth outside of getting physically stronger for 700+ chapters. He's a fairly typical low profile MC that only gets excited around fighting strong opponents. Otherwise he's just unassuming for the ever present and annoying face slapping sections. At the point in the story that I'm at the character has achieved much but is still put down as a weak idiot just to have face slapping moments.
  • Aina is not a character. If you were to ask me to write about her personality I wouldn't be able to write anything other than she's a beautiful princess who likes Wang Zheng. Even her younger sister has far more characterization than her.
  • Ye Zisu is scarcely better. I guess she's beautiful, had a crush on Wang Zheng since youth, and and I guess she's a mecha designer but otherwise she's a background character in a harem anime. The kind of girl that hangs around a guy for decades hoping for the guy to notice but is fine with never being noticed. I hate that crap. If you're going to do a harem then make one but this wishy-washy stuff needs to go.
I was going to go down and describe characters but... more>> at this point the pattern is clear. They're mostly around to support and worship the main character and have maybe one or two things to differentiate them and the main character barely has a personality.

This author also has a tendency to do annoying things like you're reading about what's happening with our protagonist and then suddenly you're reading about some randoms on another planet for a few chapters. I don't care about Lear. I don't care about Prince. I don't care about Redmington or whatever side character. Save those for side stories. Imagine watching a tv show and someone just comes in and changes the channel on you suddenly to something else. It's like that. He also likes to follow a pattern which is very annoying - new school, slice-of-life, contest, new school, etc. I just can't recommend this even for mech fans or space fans due to poor implementation and lack of detail and I can't recommend this to people that like cultivation. As a harem, it's a failure and as a kingdom builder it's no good so far. I just don't know who this would appeal to. <<less

This is one of the best novels that I have ever read.

Its not your usual cultivation bullsh*t with the same plot about pills, alchemy, meridians and the sects...

The author provided a new era which is the galactic era in the future with a modern weapon setting which is Mechas. Believe me you are going to adore mechas after reading this.

... more>> The MC is badass, very smart, charismatic, ruthless when needed to be and values friendship.

The romantic plot is amazing and I can guarantee that this is the best romance ever in an action novel that isnt solely focused on romance. <<less

The start is amazing, this was my 2nd or 3rd novel that I read and I was enjoying it a lot UNTIL the fights got dragged out. Some arcs were so slow and painful, Oh and let me tell you at least 700 chapters is just tournaments. Just multiple Tournament qualifiers stacked on top of each other. That's not it though, so many cliches as well that I didn't realize at the time. I finally made it to 1000+ chaps and I just wanted to finish it honestly. I skipped... more>> at least 100+ chapters to make it to the end. This novel here deserves a 2.5 but I just can't give one of my first novels such a low rating.

PROS: romance is pretty decent and I liked the side characters (some of them)

OVERALL: read this if you want to, don't let me stop you. I advise you to skip most of the tournament chaps because they're useless (just read everything after quarter-finals or something) <<less

Disappointing. There story has so many logical fallacies and forced plotlines. MC meets with a girl once for less than a day, not much happens between them: the next time they meet they're suddenly in love with mutual feelings. All this happened literally in 2 chapters.

Definitely had potential but characters aren't fleshed out like human beings and don't make choices we would make. It's some weird 'plot forced universe' where things happen for crap reasons.

Anyway I CBA to further spend my time on this. Do I recommend this? Only if... more>> you're like 13 yo with less capacity for abstract thinking and understanding of complicatedness of relationships AND have nothing else to read. So basically no. <<less

Cliche wish fulfillment fluff. Writing is too poor to get into the story. Like too much luck or child of destiny bullsh*t makes it impossible to get into.

is this original and inspired writing? hell no. but it's entertaining enough, though the only war was mostly competitions between schools and VR mecha fighting games so it has a (very) similar overall pattern to tempest of the battlefield and battle frenzy. the romance is meh, and all the one sided love angst from the unlucky girl (s) gets old really fast. this author always seems to try and insert shoujo love triangles (or more) in his stories and I dislike shoujo angst and drama so I tend to skip... more>> paragraphs and chapters that go on and on about loving someone in love with someone else... blah blah blah.

i liked this story better than tempest of the battlefield but that isn't really saying much. this MC is more tolerable but like the other stories, the character growth is minimal. <<less

TLDR: the harem/romance ruins everything.

As expected of a harem novel, the girls are all vicious idiots or cute lolis and the MC is a doormat in front of his type. I was hoping this would be a harem where the MC doesn't really care about the girls but nope, actual romance with all the illogical actions included such as my least favourite trope of the MC following the whims of a girl because they're so cute with "irresistible eyes".

Gary St of the same author who made AI conversations in his prequel... I don't like saying shit, but I can' tolerate these types of writing, I can only say... Considering that it did got better than the previous one, that' just so tiny, and it could've been so much better so much easily yet couldn't in the end. Now that's shit; only good if one doesn't care about uncanny valley appearing all over and around to be the core and existence of the entire novel.

It started well. It should have ended with a few chapters because in the end it just felt like the same plot was repeated over and over and over. The ending was also rushed. I would recommend reading 5he first few volumes otherwise it's a waste of time. On the other hand the translated did a wonderful job.

Honestly liked the story mainly for the characters, but the character interaction was a bit weak. The MC can be considered a generic character but he has a decent personality and gets some character growth. The biggest problem for me is that there are so many girls in the harem. Not counting all the girls that are only a bit into him, there are 4 girls that are probably never going to get married because the MC in this series is likely only gonna pick 1, or at best 2.... more>> The reason I say likely is that both this story and the prequel of this story have abrupt endings.

In the previous one, it's not necessarily abrupt more as it leaves more to be desired in terms of knowing how the characters you care about ended up.

Spoiler

In this one they have so many plot points that were supposed to be expanded upon but the second to last chapter just does a 3 year timeskip/summary of the final war with the zerg. All in one chapter. The last chapter is basically just the MC and the main love interest's wedding with harem members all being bridesmaids, but it's all just very rushed.

[collapse]

The main problem with the rushed ending is that the author spends dozen's of chapters on a single fight, with more than half of the book just being mecha fight tournaments, but he can't even write a few chapters more to let us know how the characters we care about end up.

Spoiler

I really do like the main girl but pretty much every other serious girl is a better character. The friend who's had a crush for years but never said anything with a lot of character interaction with the MC, the girl who's usually not expressive toward people but her heart gradually melts and she has her own story line that runs parallel to the MC, the girl who he meets part way in a tournament and meet again in school with a lot of interaction with the MC, the main lover interest's little sister who the MC get's tonnes of character interaction with. On the other hand, the main girl is the chance encounter that he meets once and then separates soon after but when they meet again, they immediately get together.

At least in the last book:

Spoiler

The main character only really has a couple of serious love interests and he picks the main one and the devoted one, and the feelings with his first girlfriend was resolved between the two of them

It is a good read if you have time. Does suffer one from:

Spoiler

The novel got to the point where the last couple of chapters or so rushed to the point where it was a basically a summary of what happened. Disappointed that the author basically did a time-skip that could have held another arc or two.

Junkfood/10

Spoiler

It's good. In a way that even though the author is just throwing around random bullsh*t about physics and science that doesn't even make a single bit of sense, I couldn't stop reading. The pacing of the novel is alright, but the translation style tends to remove the transitions so that the narrative seems all over the place. But still good. Neato. Kudos to the translators.

BTW this is probably my first time rating novels, so I'll explain how I rate my stuff. Junkfood is around 8.5—9.5, because even though I know it's shit, I just can't stop reading. I'll rate other novels I'll read in the future using food, so when you see me, just ignore that.
