The Godsfall Chronicles

Description

The nuclear holocaust which caused the collapse of the Old Times on Earth should have wiped out all human life on the planet. Yes, the gods set up their beautiful Elysiums to provide sanctuaries for their chosen, but by all rights everyone outside the elysian lands should’ve perished long ago. Yet somehow, human life still managed to persist, even in the deadly, mutant-infested wastelands.

Cloudhawk was a young scavenger who dreamed of being as free as the hawks in the skies, yet seemed destined to live out his life scrounging for scraps in the wasteland ruins. Fate, however, is ever-fickle. A chance meeting with a ragtag group of mercenaries changed the trajectory of his life, bringing him into a world with mutants and metahumans, demonhunters and godslayers, and even gods and demons. Cloudhawk would find his own place in a world that was far greater than he had imagined, find his own path between the zealous light of Sumeru and the whispering darkness of the Abyss… and one day, he would find that even gods may fall.

This novel is a rarity. It is not perfect, it has it's flaws, but this is a book, a real book that will make you cry, smile, develop feelings for a lot of characters and just have the time of your life. A real rarity among the sea of webnovels that pollute this web with garbage. For the pros and con's of this novel:

Positives:

  1. Real characters. EVERYONE is grey. From the dude who kills millions to the little s*aves, everyone has their feelings, their motives, their ambitions and their dreams. No one just to bad things because their bad, and even the most evil tyrant can (and trust me, will) make you feel sympathy for him. People are not perfect, and they are not defined by a trait like most novels. The most intelligent people make mistakes. The strongest one can lose. The weakest and poorest can rise. Everything can happen, and everyone has a say in the world.
  2. Real story. Everything is connected, everything has a reason and the plot is really intriguing. You know that book or manga or anime where you are just so invested in the world and characters that you devour everything that is said because it WILL be relevant at some point? This is that. Stuff happens at every chapter from the first to the last that shows that the author had everything planned from the start. That is the mark of a great author
  3. The epic. Oh my god. It's not always that moment where you feel goosebumps and make you so excited that you just feel like a kid at a candy store. But when they came, it's priceless.
  4. The main character. One of my absolute favorite in all books, even outside of webnovels. He just feels so real. He starts in the lowest drags of the world, but step by step he rises. He gets smarter, wiser, stronger then everyone, but he is never perfect. Even if it costs everything and he knows he shouldn't he fights for those he love, because that's just who he is. He will make laugh, cry, and curse all the world for what it made him do, but that's the charm of the story.
The negatives:

  1. The start of the novel can be boring to some. I loved it, but I understand the distrust that some people can harbor that the novel will eventually get better. But trust me, it get's AMAZING.
  2. A few times stuff happens that it shouldn't. That is literally the only reason this novel is not five stars to me. Really rarely, one or another character will do stuff that it's not in line with themselfs, and you can see that it is for the sake of the story going in the direction the author wants. Its rare, sure, and probably the only reason I'm being this harsh on the novel is because of the sky high estime that I think of it, but still, it's something I really don't like on novels.
That's it, all and all, ABSOLUTE recommend this masterpiece to anyone unless you are just looking for some faceslapping every chapter, but to me at least, the best book is the book that makes you feel the most, and this one is really amazing in that regard.

Up until what I've read, I would not recommend this story. This may change in the future.

I enjoy:
The plot
That it's different
The Characters and their development.

However, the bad aspects so far are really pronounced. I only stuck out so far because I hope and I pray it will get better and if it does, I will report it here and change my score! For now, it's not something I would tell future me to read. Why? To say simply, you will become just angry at the author. The... more>> MC constantly getting into trouble is no problem for me, but I rather enjoy it.

First and foremost, decision making. At first the MC makes a few intelligent choices, but then he just starts making all the wrong choices. He could have come up with so many interesting approaches, but chooses the most barbaric and s*upid one in many cases. I will give an example.

Let's say you're playing catch the flag. Now normally, you would try to cause a distraction on the opposite side and then run for the flag, or in many places. The MC would just run directly to the flag.

Secondly, Tools. I don't like it when the MC has tools (or relics in this case) that he never uses or they're not included in the thinking process. (WHEN HE SHOULD KNOW TO USE THEM) For example, let's say the MC had the ability to fly when attempting to catch the flag, but our MC still chooses to run. Let's say he had the ability to see everything from above and where everyone is standing, but when he runs he still gets caught by someone running across the field and doesn't see them coming. These are the moments I scream and I get mad. At first I blamed it on his age, but now he's 20 and I still don't see a change.

3rd and last point which will irk you. In every arc, the MC will follow around a girl. There will always be a different girl and boys are clearly less. To this point, I still haven't seen the MC kill a girl. Let's say the girls have bazookas, the MC still has the gut to joke around just because he has a slightly more powerful bazooka.

SIIIIIGGGHHHHH

To summarize, what is not appreciated:
MC doesnt use his tools right.
Bad decisions.
Favours the female gender above the male in confrontation. <<less

I'll be brief.

Plot wise, it is interesting. Translation is good but the flow of the story sucks.

The MC Cloudhawk is like a plague to good side characters wherein they die after 3-5 chapters after they are introduced. We can all accept that because there is "tragedy" tag in it but honestly this thing has become a routine to this novel that at some point you get tired of it.

... more>> Too much foreshadowing and conspiracy, but less story development.

The plot armor is so strong in this novel. Author keeps telling us (readers) that the MC is so weak yet he keeps getting him involved in powerful enemies that you might wonder if he's a masochist.

In this story, the action scenes are bullsh*t because the MC can only handle the goons and then he keeps getting captured or beaten up by their boss but somehow, they wont kill him ang then he gets teleported by his OP stone relic ang gets stronger. <<less

Are ghost-writers a thing in China?

Because this seems to be the case. The author of this novel also authored Miracle Throne. While I do read and enjoy that novel (yeah, I know), we can clearly see the difference between the two - one is well-written while the other one is not.

This is a very breathtaking novel. MC isn't OP at all (so far, but we can see the possibility) and not only strugles, but is also cheated, betrayed again, and again. Just because his original "world" (I'm not pointing to... more>> any world change here, just that he was just too low on the bottom of society) was just too damn low for him to know anything. At the start of the novel, he's like 13 or 14 years old, but lives an animal life. He has to fight to eat, just so that he doesn't die. It's really impressive. And even when he moves up to another level, he's still going hungry. And his life is constantly at stake.

It's actually somewhat tiresome to read too many chapters at once, because there's just so many friggin' instances where we cannot see, even counting on a Deus Ex Machina, how he would survive. But he does. So... It's pretty well written and the characters are interesting. You'd think the MC'd just forget about them when moving to another plane, but NO. People in this world die, be they important or not. Be they fleshed out and interesting or not. Damn. <<less

Just want to say that the low review (below) is really premature. If your going to say something about the release get your facts straight. April 21 there were multiple releases of this novel and will be continued releases from the translators. They will be ramping up releases in the next 3 weeks not slowing down.

As for the novel it is one that is not normal seen in wuxia, characters actually have depth and a purpose that not everyone can see. The reveals bout this are realistic and meaningful and... more>> happen over time not one gigantic dump and then they are immediately in league with the MC.

This is a good read and I look forward to the journey. <<less

I'm honestly shook by this novel. I have read over 20 Chinese/Korean/Japanese novels, including all the top ones (I Shall Seal The Heavens, Warlock of the Magus World, True Martial World, Martial World, Emperor's Domination, Library of Heaven's Path, King Of Gods, Against the Gods, Terror Infinity, Absolute Choice, etc.) and I can testify to the translators claim that this is by far the highest quality webnovel out there. The writing is so precise and well thought of that I cannot imagine any other webnovel author pull it off.

For example,... more>> I Shall Seal The Heavens is a novel that kept the #1 rank in weekly/monthly/all time ranking for almost the entirety of the novel (now it went down bc the TL is done). It has one of the strongest World setup of any webnovel ever, since it took more than 100 chapter to establish the setting. Godsfall Chronicles does slightly better in establishing the world. BUT IN 30 CHAPTERS.

The main character is the best one I have seen to date. He's neither overly smart (like Leylin from WMW) nor an idiot (like almost every other MC). He doesn't go God mode in 5 chapters. He sticks to his belief and ALL of his actions LOGICAL reasons behind them.

Each side character is unique and well developed. I have yet to see any young masters in here (which is a good thing). The fact that all the side characters are well made also makes it so that not half to 2 full chapters are used on explaining the background of a character, because they don't make any. Their design is so logical that it would talk a split second to deduce a background for them.

The power system is not yet full revealed since the MC is still too weak but it is very enticing.

The humor is also golden in this novel. I'll forever remember the lines ''f*ck my eyes, he's a metahuman!''

Sadly it cant shine because of the lack of chapters. <<less

This novel was very different from the other web novels I have read until now. I don't really have anything to compare it to. Maybe Attack on Titan in terms of philosophical questions. What I got from this novel wasn't what I expected. It made me introspect a lot about my own beliefs and whatnot.

Those who can get through the first 200 chapters will be surprised by where the story eventually develops in that later half. I will probably remember this novel for a long time. It was just different.... more>> Something I didn't expect, but I am glad I read it anyway. <<less

Lemme just put this out here, the novel is actually good. Frankly, it's like a xinxia shounen set in a post apocalyptic world mixed with fantasy elements. Binge read the novel for the last three days, and damn does it get good.

The MC doesn't suddenly gains a power up but slowly accumulates it through painful experiences. Expect a lot of tragedies happening around the MC wherein he is powerless to stop it.

I've read a few reviews complaining about thicc plot armor but if you read further, the author has a... more>> good explanation on 'some' of it.

Spoiler

Most of the struggles and obstacles he faces are actually set up by someone. This is a part of the novel that irritates me a little.

[collapse]

Beware though, it should have the unreliable narrator tag. There a few discrepancies that you'd notice like the power levels.

Overall, it's a good read with some exciting moments. I'd advise to read it while expecting tragedy to happen just around the corner so won't be disappointed that much.

Edit:

Found time to finish the story, the open ending leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. It leaves me hungry for more, I felt empty and spent after the ending. It was a good read, a page turner. I couldn't help myself from finishing it. I don't think it's the best story I've ever read but it's still a great read. <<less

One of the best novels I've read and probably top 3 in wuxiaworld right now with one of the best translations around. It has a great plot that keeps you hooked, specially starting from end of book 1 onwards. The MC isn't crazy OP and powers up slowly, with interesting side characters, each one with their different story and, so far, with their own importance to the plot, they don't get ditched as soon as the arc ends.

It has a mature and well thought out plot that really differentiates this... more>> novel from the typical op MC, infinite harem, you-kill-my-dog-I-kill-your-whole-country CN novel. <<less

is a really good novel so far, the MC is not your usual shameless arrogant bastard that thinks he/she is entitled to everything above the land just because he has a mystical treasure/cheat (A.K.A. Not a wish fulfillment story), it has a proper flow and even the MC plot armor only works to barely save his life but not to protect him from having the crap beaten out of him. Something that on my personal opinion is quite refreshing since 90% of the usual chinese WN the MC becomes practically... more>> untouchable after getting his/her plot armor, the secondary characters feels more real than other novels so far, the world building is just right, neither too much or too little with no monologues so far, and zero purple prose something I am really thankful for. <<less

Think 'Mad Max' meets 'Desert Punk' meets 'Fallout' meets 'Forty Melleniums of Cultivation' meets 'Monarch of Evernight' at a party and they make a strange baby named 'The Godfall Chronicles'. It is freaking awesome so far, but it is still early.

The setting is post-apocalyptic New York City where the atlantic ocean has desertified. The MC is a 14-15 year old boy who has to hussle every day scavanging through the ruins of New York City just to eat. One day the MC is recruited by a mercenary band to do... more>> a somewhat dangerous job, and so the adventure begins. <<less

This novel is criminally underrated/unknown. Quality wise it's an absolutely top-tier webnovel with the story feeling like it's written by a legit published author, and has a very distinct plot arc from beginning -> middle -> end that you can tell was clearly planned out from the start with little to none of the meandering you see in most webnovels. The characters are all extremely distinct and complex, and the choices they make always result in real legitimate consequences rather than having everything just go perfectly for the MC and... more>> the people closest to him because of plot armor. Be ready for the MC to take some serious Ls throughout the story, although said Ls almost always come about in an organic and earned manner rather than the author just trying to make the story all grimdark for the sake of it (admittedly there are a couple times the MC walks into traps that by all rights he should've seen coming a thousand miles away).

If I had to give any negatives I'd say that the plot seemed to accelerate a bit too much in the last 1/4 of the novel compared to the pacing of the first 3/4. I think the ending could've been a good bit better if the author had expanded the last 2 books into 3 or even 4 and fleshed things out more. The story is also a little too fond of having "smart" characters own the largely "good person" MC with their enlightened moral relativism, sometimes getting wayyyyy too close to "there's actually zero difference between good & bad things, you imbecile" territory for my liking. That said it's still far better than most webnovels of the same genre in that respect, considering they usually pretend morality beyond "tHe sTrOnG cAn dO wHaT tHeY wAnT" doesn't even exist.

In summation, if you (like me) still want to get s**ked into an entertaining webnovel without losing whatever braincells you still have after poring through mountains of tr*sh then do yourself a favor and check this novel out. <<less

The writing skills are top notch. The pacing, plot, and everything are truly great. However, the story and world are depressing with no light spots. There is no break in the story for lighter moments, which is neccessary in darker novels. It truly is print quality, but I can't keep reading it because of that one problem. It's too overwhelmingly depressing.

So far okay read to me. Like most Chinese novels the MC gets overpowered very quickly._.

The MC has his own talent of sensing danger, isn't arrogant [which is a difference for most Chinese novels :3] is smart, cunning and so on.

I like how it seems realistic [nice descriptions of stuff and MC will have more than "1" person stronger than him] and has no repeat of things or 2-d characters, but the most annoying thing I find is how....... more>>
Spoiler

the MC finds a jewel [like other novels] and will get op fast, like now the MC is a one of a kind born in the wasteland special type of person._. hopefully he doesn't become arrogant later on

Having read mostly cultivation novels for the past years, TGC made me realize how.. Flat.. These generic for-salary creations are. Everyone has to live, I'm not judging.

This novel can be described as a "living world". Actions beget consequences which in turn inform actions. The characters interact with the world and other characters based on their own history and creed. Characters grow, characters change. Some die. Though they are never forgotten.

It is a bit rough around the edges and once or twice I couldn't help screaming internally.
Spoiler

"Why the bloody hell didn't you just ask?! Just, for once, ask: Daddy Legion, what the hell is going on with the gods, please tell me." Maybe that could have helped him make an informed decision when talking it over with Arcturus, instead of, well, bloody mu*der borne from ignorance.

Though, in the grand scheme of things, those are minor gripes.

i initially read to the end of book 1 for this and stopped and then picked it up again, but I forgot why I dropped this till I read like 20 chs and it all came back and hit me in the head. This book is literal garbage, I know i've said this about so many novels already but l00l this one takes the cake I thought f*cking "the first order" was bad damn this one is like next level ret*rded.

first of all about all the reviews talking about how... more>> this novel is just endless fighting I'm not deep enough to say that but I can kinda already see that developing just from book 1 and 2 anyways I don't actually think its that big of a problem when its done correctly that is. The issue with this book is that the MC seems to never learn throughout the process. For ex lets take the start of book 2 any rational person would think twice before going to the so called "holy lands" I mean i'd be skeptical as hell as if it really was a paradise. Next literally like no joke within the first 10 chs he sees the type of sh*t show that the holy land people are and he still decides to go there l00l like are you serious? Like the MC seriously is mentally ret*rded, this isn't a overstatement he is "ret*rded."

2nd this is probably what triggers me the f*cking most when I read these apocalyptic type novels for f*ck sake THESE ARE SETTINGS WHERE ITS THE LAW OF THE JUNGLE. I don't know how its so hard to get through the authors f*cking thick skull. Like I swear if I see any crap about morals and such from MC in these type of scenarios I'm just going to - 2 stars regardless. How is it possible that he has morals and such that cloudhawk is disgusted with innocents dieing and whatever. He should have literally no standards to such think about it if you see f*cking people die f*cking every other day around you, this might be inhumane but reality is your going to be numb to it thats just f*cking reality. The fact that the authors who decide to write these genres and can't empathetically understand this point means they aren't f*cking doing their jobs.

probably the only saving grace for this novel is the world building, but even that so far is just alright its not exceptional.

side characters - are meh there's none that stands out from what I read so far maybe the only one being the scientist roste because he has a clear define objective and hes basically doing everything he can to get there pity he died for our potato brain ret*rd. plot- the plot is tr*sh so far nothing note worthy is mentioned about the main story line so far and hes running around getting dicked left and right while making no progress or should I say making progress in the wrong way. mc- probably the worst part of this story the dudes brain is basically powered by a potato. On top of that he has so called morals that doesn't make sense for him to have its like magically he was able to attend a human rights 101 class while wandering the desert struggling to survive everyday yeap he sure as heck had the time to do that. His ambitions are questionable from the stand point that he is the MC like if he was a side character and his dream was to see the dazzling fake utopia that is the so called holy land yea sure his character would make sense and be reasonable but the fact is hes the f*cking MC that literally can't be his ambitions it can be anyone's but his.

i see and read so many of these types of novels it just triggers me so much that out of 10 novels 9 of them are sh*t l00l I don't think thats the occasional bad writer thats just f*cked up standards and those 9 people should gtfo the industry and do something else cause they don't have what it takes to write an actual decent novel. <<less

I'll say this right now, I've never liked apocalypse novels and I don't know if I ever will, but this novel, The Godsfall Chronicles, gives me a tingling in all the right places.

First we start with the MC. Cloudhawk, a hopefull and clever scavenger who's one and only hope is to have control over his own life and never have to 'scavenge'. You can really see this ravenous hunger for control that he has throughout the translated chapters of this book. They affect his actions and make him act in... more>> certain ways he usually wouldn't. This by itself is really cool as he doesn't have one of the standard MC harworking, earnest arrogant attitudes nor does he have the pervy or scammer archetype. Its really interesting seeing his slightly more honest and kindof naive personality clashe with the wastelands, and even his personality is affected due to this clash.

When it comes to action, this novel is also really enjoyable as well. Although this MC is one that has his fair share of luck, he also has to think through thing and knows fairly well how to be the most effective even though hes pretty weak. Its quite interesting/funny when you see him struggle to kill one mutant with all his strength and wits just to have the Diggers (which are a faction in the wastelands) mow through a bunch of higher level mutants with ease and find him pretty much halfdead and be like "wow look boys, this little f*cker survived"

If you're looking for a story where the MC goes from 0 to 100 in like three chapters though, you've come to the wrong place because although the MC gets his lucky chance only a couple chapters in, you can only see it affect him very slowly and doesn't start to really shine for a while. Also when it come to cultivation/strength gaining its not very unique but is still quite interesting.

  • Spoiler

Some people in the wastelands have a chance to awaken one or mote mutagens in their body. Some of the mutagens seen so far are Strength, agility, healing, and control. These aren't the only powers as we've kinda been hinted that their is more stuff to come. Some of them are divine weapon things that a certain kind of people weild and also, the MC is given this kind of basic body training method which makes him very tired but is suposedly supposed to help you awaken your mutagens further withought having to experience life or death situations which is the way normal people do it.

    [collapse]
