This novel is now complete as of posting this review.

For me, this entire novel was an eye-opener and it's a novel that I think I will reread many times in the future years and think about often. It wasn't the best story in the world, but what it brought and delivered were done so incredibly well. Humor? Check. Action? Check. Romance? Depends on your view but it was a check for me. Philosophical? Check. Amazing? Check.

It's hard for me to describe my feelings on this novel in simple words, because... more>> it truly is a breathtaking novel. From the good to the bad to the great, it's a rollercoaster ride that I will never regret going on. Many aspects of this novel were obviously well thought out incredibly early with seeds spread throughout the novel for the readers. The ending wasn't rushed because it was going where everyone knew it had to go, but that doesn't mean there weren't many surprises there waiting at the end.

5 stars is a bit of an eh system to rate things by, I would probably rate this between an 8.5 and a 9 out of 10 rather then giving it full marks. There are moments you may get bored or think things should of gone differently here and there, but no novel can be perfect. This is truly worth a read, and if you have any hesitation, then let me tell you that you should drop the hesitation and start reading. <<less

If we only consider completely translated super-length novels, this is the one that will topple Coiling Dragon from its throne. Translation is very close to completion (another 100ish chapters to go?) and it's been a great ride. The writing (and I guess, translation quality), worldbuilding, storytelling, etc. Is top notch.

If you've never read one of these novels before and have to choose between CD and ISSTH I'd still recommend reading CD first because otherwise, you might be disappointed. ISSTH is setting the bar extremely high as far as webnovels go.

Very... more>> much looking forward to "A Will Eternal" by the same author.

I see a lot of reviews criticizing this (and other) works - of course, there are weak points. But you have to keep one thing in mind, these stories are longer than most western fantasy series yet they are published chapter by chapter, which means the author can not (easily) go back and revise. In every webnovel you find abilities and cultivation details and characters and even sideplots that are conveniently forgotten as the story progesses. Actually ISSTH is one of the few that tie things together quite well regardless. <<less

I started this book 4 months ago and ended up getting stuck during the first book.

I stopped reading it until about 2 weeks ago in which I binge read it until today when I caught up. It's a great novel with amazing character development (for characters that don't get discarded), good world building, is non-harem (not that I have anything against harems), and actually has suspense, for instance the end result after the Wang clan branch chase (don't wanna spoil to much).

Then 1 of my favorite elements to issth... more>> is the references to Er Gen's other novels such as the slaughter clone and the 9 clans.

the romance isn't a main aspect but it allows a proper motivation and reason to travel to the other mountains and seas without just saying "I'm going on an adventure, cy@." Issth is a great read with alot of characters clans item spells daos and a bunch of other sh*t you think you have to know but either wont come up again within the next 300 chapters (romance missing for about 900+chapters) or just doesn't matter anymore (I miss 'little tiger') that make the world exciting and interesting with some novels such as ATG actually making fillers out of repeats, or BTTH where there is no unique aspect.

Now if you believe issth is another generic xianxia then I dare you to please find another novel which has a mirror as a weapon, a meat jelly as a thunder god, a parrot as a tr*sh talker, pills that can cultivate (pill demon, world destroying butterflies, a guy who paints fate for some reason or another, a reincarnation aspect that has no BS whatsoever and an MC so shameless that he made himself an ability that forces people to owe him money then I will jump of a cliff and leave my life to lady luck, that's how sure I am on the greatness and uniqueness of my 3rd favorite novel ISSTH. <<less

Not sure why people say this starts out slow, it basically gets right to the action. Unfortunately, the start is the only good part of this novel. I've read about half of it and then had to skim the rest because of just how utterly boring and random it became. There weren't story arcs anymore, just random sh*t the author pulled out of his ass happening and then forgetting about which made it really hard to keep interest. Meng Hao also goes through huge character changes (there's a "plot" reason... more>> for them even though the reason is ass bullshitty as anything else in the novel) that makes him entirely inconsistent.

Dropping this novel (well, kind of, like I said I already skimmed till the end) as the last 2/3s of the novel is honestly just garbage, I'd read maybe the first one third and just call it a day. <<less

I seriously dont have words for this novel, this is an absolute work of art so to put it. Although beginning is boring but if u get past it u will find yourself reading probably the best novel out there. Meng hao as an MC is great, side characters are not one dimensional mechanial being but have their own well developed personalities, goals, aspirations and dreams, villians are also not your typical "die tr*sh" types, premise of the world is great story events come together beautifully. The plot holes and... more>> scattered parts of the story come to piece together in the last 2 books pretty well, ending books could have been done a bit better but still it's pretty damn good, this novel has made a unique place for itself in my heart. New readers should definitely give it a go. <<less

Out of all the web novels I have ever read, I think this might just be my favourite. Not only is it refreshing to have an MC who isn't a part-time harem herder but the depth with which Er Gen writes about the world and Meng Hao's path of cultivation makes it incredibly easy to fall more in love with this story with each chapter. Although Meng Hao's continuous triumphs are predictable, it's never done in a way that feels like a cop out. Even his plot armour is beautifully... more>> crafted. Furthermore, there's romance, rivalry, comedy and no shortage of hair-raising situations to keep you coming back. A review of this story also wouldn't be complete without mentioning Patriarch Deathblade whose mastery of the Dao of Translation continues to amaze me every day.

LONG LIVE THE HEAVEN SEALING SECT! <<less

Kay issth is a must read, if your new to light novels this is the best one for you but it can be bad in a kind of way because you will read issth and fall in love with it and think its great which it is but then you will want to read a next novel (one as good as issth) but then you will realize there are not many novels as good as this because your expectations are so high and the other novels will be left... more>> alone and you might go into severe depression.
Honestly the romance is good but not great and the cultivation world setting is great. I like meng hao and all but it is the setting that truly sold the story to me. IF the romance was better maybe it would be my number 1. Nah. <<less

You know I am not up to date, currently at 736, but I have still read 736 chapters over like a nine month period and still find stuff I like about the story. If someone has put in that kind of commitment then it must have some special charm. Yes, it starts out a little slow, but power through it. ISSTH is one of the most well written and well translated novels here. Highly recommend to anyone.

It's superb! A novel describing an entire genre.

Basically those that gave it less than four stars disagree with the whole genre not the novel itself.

There's unique comedy, intelligent writing and plot, very good pace and unpredictable twists.

You already know the basic summary of the novel, but know this, it is coming from a reader who has read almost every novel especially of the Xanxia genre, this one is diamond.

Compared to all the other Chinese web-novels in the Xianxia genre i've read so far this is undoubtedly the best. It also enjoys a much better quality of translation and editing than most others. As far as Chinese web-novels are concerned, it's great. (Though there's definitely room for lots of improvement)

Romance-wise, well, it could be much better in my opinion, and xu qing was dealt a very bad hand. I'm not referring to what happens to her in the story but the way the author starts treating her. She... more>> started out as a powerful cultivator but by the 2nd arc she's been reduced to a "simple" girl. I do like that there isn't a huge harem situation going on. Those have become quite tedious to read. On the other hand, so far, the story has done a very poor job in resolving hao's relationships with the other girls.

One thing that continues to bug me about the whole cultivation genre in general, is that nobody in them is ever concerned with the betterment of life, society, culture, as a whole. None of them bat an eye at killing for frankly trivial reasons. Ah well.

Anyway, as I said earlier, as cultivation stories go, this is the best I've read so far, both content and quality translation-wise. <<less

Look at all the good reviews here are you still doubtful my friend? Then let this one try and guide you...

ISSTH is an er gen book I stated reading it after starting xian ni which is also equally great and like many Chinese novels the characters are well cool and all but a bit boring but sometimes a weakness can also be a strength so that's what happens here in a way and ISSTH displays it wonderfully, instead of focusing much on character it focuses on storytelling and plot making... more>> it like blade runner where you are shown not told the story well its not as confusing as blade runner don't worry its quite the simple read actually.

I believe every good story or series has a point after which it really kicks of and in ISSTH that would be till around chapter 150 or so. <<less

Frustratingly slow and boring. It isn't later until you get into the 2nd Arc (Book) that it gets better with all the conspiracy of the world. Unfortunately the conspiracy gets reveal gradually over the multiple arcs, but the author entertain you with the main focus of each arc. What each arc focus on, is on the title of the book, so no point for me in explaining it. From chapter 250 till 300 or so, the authors repeats himself with different wording which gets annoying, but later not... more>> so much.

I dropped this novel so many times, but once you reach the second book, you will start to enjoy it. It is honestly really good. I wish you luck in trying to get past the first book. <<less

The chapters are very well written, full of logic and the translation by deathblade is extraordinary. It takes a hell of a good translator to convey the deep concepts right. Its got a few (very few) ecchi moments (which I like). All in all issth is numero uno for me. <<less

I Shall Seal the Heavens is definitely a novel that is a cut above the rest. Er Gen's writing style is extremely deep and well thought out. He does a great job of foreshadowing and I love the MC's personality as well as his unique way of cultivation. Also, this novel probably has the best translator for any Chinese novel to date. I don't know how anyone can rate this less than 5 stars.

For those who have read the manga "Helck", you can more or less think of ISSTH as a longer version of Xianxia Helck.

By that, I mean ISSTH is a story that starts off fairly lighthearted and humerous and then the serious plot starts to slowly creep in (though that doesn't mean the humor goes away completely, it shows its face once in a while to make people giggle).

For those who enjpy fast-paced, non-stop slaughtering, you should turn back now. Yes, Meng Hao will kill people but the story doesn't focus... more>> on that but rather it focuses on Meng Hao's dao and how he follows his dao.

While plot armor exists (no protagonist can avoid it), it's mainly explained and shown beforehand. Which means no "nakama power" copouts and sudden powerups so if you enjoy that stuff, turn away now.

Overall, a worthy read. <<less

[Review] [5/5]

This novel is a really thrilling xianxia story, where the novel takes/introduce us readers to not-so-new but unique ideas that you can't find in other xianxia.

Examples:

... more>> Spoiler

•Infiltrate an enemy territory and learn the art of alchemy from them
•Be a Tribe leader and Fight Tribal wars
•Take over dead bodies and use them as avatar and see the past history
•Experience a whole life time inside an illusion

[/spoiler]

Things I like about this story:
1. Profound phrases that the MC say once in awhile that send chill to the readers bone
2. Good and well studied/planned character development
3. Unique plots (explained at the top)
4. Not so deep but heart warming scenes
5. Unceasing comedy that suddenly pop out in the unexpected times
6. Character Interactions
7. And finally the unorthodoxy way of cultivation that meng hao follow.

anyway for the future readers, let me make things clear, the MC is neither a Genius nor a cunning guy.. Maybe smart, yes, but The exact word to describe the guy, is the word "CRAFTY"
and that craftiness always, not once but always show itself every critical timeis. <<less

The story starts off slow as the MC would often run from powerful foes unless given no other choice. But after the first book, the plot become attractive as the MC goes deeper into the world of cultivation. Unlike most Xianxian MC Meng Heo has a calm temperament and would avoid offending other if possible.

4.25/5 (originally rated 4.75/5)

I've been reading this novel for quite some time but I never got to take the time to write a review mainly because: 1) I was too busy enjoying reading this novel and all the other novels and 2) most of the stuff I would have written before were positive things which honestly, just seeing the plethora of positive reviews for this novel, would certainly have been noted down by somebody else. That being said, I'll focus on the major negative things I've noticed, 3 of... more>> them to be precise.

1) It's getting drawn out more and more. Before I explain more, let me first state that I believe, and I also personally think that everyone believes that among all the Chinese authors, Er Gen has the best writing style. When it comes to writing details, adding depth to the world, excellent planning seen in the foreshadowing etc., Er Gen is the undisputed king. The thing though is that no matter how good you are at those things, drawn out story-telling will still be drawn out story-telling. It might work multiple times at the start because of the sheer wonder the author has with words but as you get used to wonder, it becomes a bit tiring to read. This is particularly evident in the Western Desert arc, especially during the "Great Migration". Chapter after chapter, their journey is detailed and after a good number of chapters you just begin to ask the question "are they there yet?" after each chapter. Even professional writers can have this problem and Er Gen is not an exception.

2) The repetitiveness of some plot driving events. Particularly, "X tried to beat up MH only to get beaten up badly and getting traumatized. After that event X actively tried to avoid MH but despite that, X found himself right in front of MH again." Honestly, I'm wishing this plot isn't used again in the story. I'd rather have Y somehow acquire a legacy. Hell, MH's first "rival" was supposed to get a heaven-defying legacy if it wasn't for MH snatching it from him. If someone that young / weak can have a chance of acquiring a legacy, why not have a plot where "Y tried to beat MH only to get beaten up badly. However, after that thrashing, Y was able to have a fortunate encounter and obtained power, which gave him the confidence to chase after MH in order to seek revenge." Like I said, Er Gen has the best writing style but that same style makes it harder to read the story. Thus, when things are drawn out / repeated, it's more noticeable because you spend a lot more time completely understanding the writing. A simple example can be seen using Math. If you were asked to use a simple equation again and again, it'll obviously be tiring. However, compared to being asked to repeat a complex / complicated equation again and again, it's way less tiring.

3) The questions just keep piling up. Sure, there are a number of minor questions answered but as for the major questions, most of them have remained unanswered after 548 chapters. There are clues given, but even the those clues just lead the readers to ask even more questions.

Those 3 being said, keep in mind that I still gave this novel a 4.25 / 5, which means that this novel is easily in my Top 5 web novels.

*Brief review of Deathblade*

Simple. He's (currently) the best translator. Him being able to translate this novel so well despite it's sheer detail, complicatedness and wide vocabulary while keeping up such a fast pace of release is a testament of this. Add the fact that he goes beyond simply translating. He answers questions (minor spoiler thread) and makes it a point to try to improve things (based on comments / complaints). A perfect example is how he's been trying to find the middle ground for those people who prefer not to read titles containing spoilers and those who just don't care and find it a hassle scrolling to the bottom of the page in order to find out the title of the chapter. Seriously, kudos to him. <<less

Just the right amount of humor from a few lovable, snarky sidekicks, a brilliantly executed cultivation mechanic with a dash of mystery alongside some awesome pacing, as well as the kind of sporadic epicness that most xianxia end up blowing out of proportion make ISSTH an absolute must read. Although the characteristic shallow character and world building of Chinese xianxia will be a problem for some, if you just want to let yourself go with the flow and enjoy a story that makes you want to shout at the heavens,... more>> look no further than ISSTH. Most of all, the MC isn’t a douche and the plot armor is relatively thin (or set up well enough to not seem like plot armor) <<less
