A Demon Lord’s Tale: Dungeons, Monster Girls, and Heartwarming Bliss

Description

One day, I woke up only find out that I’d become a Demon Lord, an individual responsible for protecting a dungeon. The world I’d been spirited away to was one filled with violence. Gigantic monsters wandered through it and competed with each other each and every day for the right to survive. I had no choice but to strengthen my dungeon’s defenses in hopes of living another day—or at least that was what I’d thought. For some odd reason, I instead ended up spending my days in relaxation and bliss.

This is Yuki’s story, my story. It tells the tale of how I spent my days after settling down in a dungeon with a self indulgent, “supreme” dragon girl and a young vampire.

It started out really great, eventually the characters lack of development and his incessant immaturity combined with all the foul language and creepy loli collecting that started happening (literally started to collect grade-school loli's for romance... not my thing.) and the forced random marriage to a random side character... just too much was going wrong with this all at once and I ended up dropping it.

I really liked the start though so its not necessarily a waste of time to try out, I just couldn't continue reading it, hoping for... more>> better development of MC character and more mature story development. <<less

This is a great slice of life story with a bit of action thrown in. The characters all have great interactions with each other that get better as the story progresses. There aren't pointless fanservice scenes (or pretty much any fanservice scenes unless you have a wing fetish), so characters are developed as actual people instead of objects. The TL also does a great job of fulfilling the spirit of what the characters say, so while it may not be a perfect 1:1 TL, it brings the characters more to... more>> life and makes the story more compelling. <<less

I personaly loved this LN, as it didn't feel that the story or romance was forced in anyway, even though the MC had a harem it felt as if he only had the harem because of his personality (instead of it being because he is the MC), the harem he has only exists because he is constantly saving people and caring for them. The harem also feel like they exist for a purpose and not only to be his wives (or for the s*x apeal), he fights to keep them... more>> safe and he falls back onto them when he is in need of help (mental or physical). It also didn't have any unnecessary filler (not including the side chapters which are clearly marked and even they serve the purpose of showing and advancing the relationships between the characters), every chapter felt needed, even the one that apeared to just be a drunken bar fight is necessary, as is help to show how demons are an agressive race that only think with thier muscles and how our MC doesn't understand the Demons ways. The characters were also all unique and thought out, unlike sertain LNs that just have blank sheets as thier characters and give them "Personality" (which is just something like, being good at magic or using thier fists to fight), this LN instead tries not to do this blank sheet method, but instead gives them personality, real personality that a person can relate to, even the MC has a thought out personality and not just something the reader could use as a projector screen for thier own personality, the MC is goofy and doesn't always use his head, he isn't the omniscient and omnipotent protagonist who always knows whats happening in a fight (be it physical or mental), instead he normaly doesn't think through his actions and instead uses brute force to get through his problems, as he isn't even good a fighting with his head or fighting in general, there are even parts where he falls onto friends for help and he has to fight with his life on the line, constantly allmost dying, this is what makes him a good MC he isn't afraid to ask for help and imbraces his weaknesses and improves on them. This is what truely makes a good character weaknesses and improvement. I can also see problems with this LN though such as if a person didn't like the harem genre they might not like this LN, saying that it could have just stoped at one wife or made the characters have forbiden feelings for the MC, and I can agree, but it feels beter for the characters to not hold back on that happy life they want as it feels natural as their personality matches the feelings. In conclusion yes the LN has flaws everything does, but if you look past the flaws you can realy enjoy the story. <<less

I'm really curious how all the japanese harem isekai writers with cheat systems all write in the exact same style. Start with a multi-chapter info dump that explains really obvious things to you. Then monologue constantly about every one of the protagonists decisions. Finally, rapidly start introducing harem members with the traditional Japanese harem personas. Oh, let's not forget to sexualize little girls in the first few chapters while we're at it.

I don't mind harem, but when every single one of them is written like they're coming off a template,... more>> it starts getting really annoying to read. <<less

everything is just soooooo f*ckin boring man.. SOOO BORING. Slice of life is not an excuse for the novel to have absolutely no direction at all, for the MC to be a ret*rd that has no goals and lives day to day doing f*ck all. Characters keep getting added and all they do is have 2-3 interaction and now they are suddenly family, instead of the chapters being the monologue filled drivel of the MC why not add some interactions between the characters?

It's okay. The writing is weak and the dialogue too memey, but Lefi is pretty cute. The story keeps trying so hard to sell me on Illuna's cuteness and innocence that I'm half convinced that she's actually the big bad and using mind control because I don't find her cute at all and don't get what the characters see in her.

The world building is both really simplistic and can't seem to stay on the right note. Humans are all jerks... which is why we're siding with them anyway! Huh?

I'll probably... more>> get to the most recent chapter and then just stop reading unless something super interesting happens. The protagonist is pretty obnoxious so I'm not invested in his struggles. <<less

Cringe. It's just cringe.

The author is a moron and consistently makes it an effort to show it whether it be using the MC as a mouthpiece to talk about actual IRL issues from the ignorance and arrogance of an actual Japanese teenager that he is.

Yes, a s*upid ass pedo web novel surely is a good place to talk about the turmoil in the middle east, surely our teenager Japanese writer knows enough about the issue to make a comment about this.

And I do mean pedo. Like actual pedo. Author has... more>> issues. Every girl the guy bangs ends up being the "i look 12 but im actually 2000 lmao" trope. Not only that, but holy sh*t the justifications for the harem are hilarious.

Almost every isekai treats women as some dumb object. This is no different. The "women" in this novel are again just a mouthpiece for the author to talk about s*upid sh*t like how apparently all women just seek strong men and are all willing to huddle up and be s*aves to them or whatever. Incel energy radiates from this novel at all levels.

The translation at the start especially is incredibly unprofessional, with somewhat racist undertones. You'll see what I mean. <<less

One of my favorite novels on the site. Harem isn't half-heartedly cobbled together and rushed, each love interest is actually their own character with interesting personalities. MC's personality is hilarious and never frustrates me, and absolutely does not act like your typical beta MC, without becoming a psychotic CN-like mass mu*derer. He is OP, but he's still growing so the tension still remains ... more>>

especially in the dragon fight, that was one of the first novel battles that genuinely hyped me up like a manga or anime usually does.

[collapse]
Story has remained consistently fresh and amazing so far, and even though it is slice of life, it's one of the first to genuinely keep me entertained even through the slice of life bits, which there is a good amount of, but imo it does a good job of balancing slice of life and chill arcs with action and adventure arcs. Would 100% recommend this novel to anyone

PS: The translation is one of the best things about the story, the dialogue feels natural and hilarious, and even though it is "americanized", it doesn't make me cringe at all and actually enhanced the humor and even the action/serious moments for me (ik some people didn't like it, but from reading other reviews, the general consensus was the translation was fantastic, so I'd recommend trying it out for yourself). The updates are consistent as well, really makes me wish CardboardTL did more novels instead of those people that just do half-assed MTL and call it proper "translation".

PS#2: There is also a well done manga if you want a good intro into the story. It doesn't skip much, so you could also just read right where you left off if you finish it. <<less

Don’t know why so many people above crap reviews on this site specially when from the comment they made it’s clear they read 4-5 chapters and some reason expect the whole plot, characters building and world building to already have happened it’s beyond s*upid. If your here for the normal mind numbing fantasy reincarnated story with characters who’s personality and back story is told in one or two crappy chapters and has no character development or superficial connection building with other characters then this novel isn’t for you.

This author is... more>> brilliant at slowly building up the personality of the characters so you feel more like you are slowly getting to know them instead of just being told what they are and losing interest quickly. Also the author gives each character including the MC a very unique but funny personality with both good sides and flaws. Also the relationship between characters isn’t some s*upid rushed story with, quick let’s give the MC a new woman every 5 mins who immediately fall in love with him for no reason. Though he does get new people, the friendship that become relationships are slowly built on over time.

This is a very good and rare example of an author that has mixed slice of life with fantasy action and adventure, which is hard to pull off since it’s difficult to balance the two. So my advice is if you want a novel that very well written with characters you will come to understand and enjoy. Which requires more than a 3 second attentions span to understand and become invested in then this is for you. But If you are like most of the people who rated this low, who wants your overused Op fantasy adventure novel, Who's characters and plots are explained in single chapters for those with no patients or attention span to allow characters building then this isn’t for you and I suggest the millions of other crap iseki many authors with no writing ability have been churning out lately <<less

Giving it a solid 3 star. The reason as follows:

It's a great novel as far as isekai novels with a slice of life tag can go. But, this particular novel has a weird problem. That is, the male protagonist (or the author) avoids the topic of s*x or mating in this case like a plague. The protagonist Yuki is unlike other beta JP protagonists we see in most novels, where they are too afraid to take the crucial step in their relationship and marry their harem members. Yuki did... more>> not wait for long and quickly married his harem members. But the problem starts from here, that is he entered a perpetual state of "Sage Mode". So far in the novel Yuki seems devoid of any carnal desire. He feels both attraction and love towards his wives, but so far he didn't show any feelings of lust for them. He doesn't have the male instinct of reproduction. Even when he is in the bath, alone with his beautiful naked wives; Yuki only has the feeling of attraction and love, no lust is present. It's the same for the female characters also. Some might say that Yuki is too innocent and pure, but we should remember that before his reincarnation he was an adult. He cannot be that much pure. In the end, there can be two possibilities:

Firstly, Yuki lacks a male reproductive organ. Secondly, the author himself is purposefully avoiding the topic for some reason. Maybe he has some sort of past trauma about the particular subject? Most likely we will never know, but Yuki is certainly the Beta Demon King adept in the art of the Sage Mode. <<less

2/5 - D Tier - It's not trying to be grand, and that's okay

For the type of story that it is, it does its job well. A laid back adventure while managing a dungeon, nothing overbearing nor grand.

The narration always feels a tad bit off. It's like the MC seems to know that there are readers reading his life so he tries to give information on things that only that thought would bring about. Aside from that small pet peeve, the story itself is narrated well enough that you should... more>> have little problem reading or understanding things. E.i The novel is generally written and translated well--save for some minor word flow problems.

I take minimal issue with the first three chapters having been nothing more than dumps of info. If you weren't reading with the thought that the story would start, they would be terrible as beginning chapters.

The MC has a 'personality'. That's really what he chalks up to, his personality is about as unique as the rest of the MCs of most novels like this. Of course, for a story that's doing what it does, I suppose it's perfectly fine that way. It is a 'fill in' type of story after all. Being bland is almost a must.

If you're looking for epic action, this story is obviously not for you.

If you're looking for convoluted, intrinsic, or clever plotlines, this story is not for you.

The dialogue is what you would expect from a story like this, just the same with the romance and harem. However, each character does, thankfully, have their own personality--no matter how gimmicky they may seem. [Lefy is the best character, appearance, and personality-wise. She's basically a glorified neet.]

The magic system in the story is primarily based on imagination, I wonder if one could create a nuke if they understood the science of it? I see this as the more interesting bit of the story.

The story isn't trying to be grand, it knows its strengths and faults, and that's okay. It does what it's supposed to, given the type of novel it is; it is a relaxing read, nothing more, nothing less. <<less

TL;DR at the bottom

Okay, so far I love the story. The characters are interesting, even if the main character is a bit 2D it isn’t bad. The plots rather interesting, and the translation job is done really really well. You may be asking yourself now, why did I give this series 4 stars instead of 5 if I’m so in love with it? There’s a couple of reasons as to why I did what I did. While the translator is pretty good at their job, the person who is sorely... more>> lacking is the group itself. After one of the chapters in the early teens (ie 11-14), Asian Hobbyist started to split up each chapter into different pages. Now while that might not be a huge issue, the problem is that the chapter isn’t long enough to really warrant that. Some pages are as long as an iPhone 7 screen, so it make sense it a huge hassle to keep going all the way down to the page index, and clicking on the next one. Really takes you out of a series while you’re reading it. The next issue is the fact that the group uses ads, and while again in and of itself I’m totally happy about that since how else are they supposed to cover their website’s overhead cost, the problem is the amount. Each “page” has at least 8 ads on it, 4 on the top and 4 on the bottom which makes it really irritating to go from the top of the page to the page index button. The layout could be changed so that it’s a bit less intrusive, since each time I read a page of this series I suddenly get pulled out of it because of some clickbait article that could/could not be malicious in nature.

TL;DR

Okay, so overall the story is great, the characters are great, and I’m in love with this series. What I’m not in love with however is the translating group because of their desire to split each chapter up into multiple pages as well as use a ton of ads. Great series, great translators, awful website. That’s my only complaint about it. <<less

Enjoy the novel a fair bit, but the MC coming off as an absolute idiot half the time isn't exactly entertaining. I see a tag claiming him to be a "clever protagonist", but that couldn't be any further from the truth.

I like the harem genre, but it feels so forced here with the MC making so called silly mistakes and landing himself with new wives left and right for no other reason than him causing others to misinterpret his words and actions due to his carelessness. There's also the fact... more>> that his harem mostly consists of kids and even the oldest of them looks like a kid. Moreover, the way he speaks is so off-putting. Why the use of so much slang in a JP novel? It's so out of place and the MC only comes off as an even bigger idiot. Like who tf even says "mang" and "gunna"? If the author's going to use slang, at least use it correctly. MC's childish to the extreme and his only real redeeming qualities being that he's kind, but also not naive to the extent of other JP protags to spare the life of his enemies.

Decent slice of life, but the MC leaves much to be desired. Recommend if you can look past a foolish MC. <<less

There are a number of negative reviews, but I absolutely love this story. It is a fun read in first person. Yuki is a unique and entertaining character. He can be brutal to his enemies but always puts his family before himself (as it should be). Most of the story is about his lighthearted dungeon life, but it can also show the deadly challenges that accompany making a world most ideal for his family life. It was a great enough story that I am now rereading it for the third... more>> time.

However, almost all of the chapters suddenly disappeared a few weeks ago. What happened? Was the translation discontinued and deleted? I really hope it comes back and starts updating again. <<less

Average. I honestly do not see how this novel can get such a high rating. I will not go on a thousand word emotional rant about how tr*sh the novel is and how the author should kill themselves (yes this community is toxic). Instead, I will present my opinions and facts on the matter, letting you decide for yourself whether this novel is good or not.

Firstly, there are many issues and plot holes borne of the much too fast-paced development, which I feel as though completely ignores any world-building and... more>> compromises the foundation for the characters to develop and drive the plot forward towards a meaningful goal. It seems as though the world adapts to whatever would be most convenient for the MC, rather than the characters adapting and maturing along with changing circumstances. To prove my point, immediately after starting the novel, he is conveniently able to use 'primordial magic', which supposedly only a dozen could master, while others need to chant in order to cast spells. This was expressed quite passionately by the supposedly in-awed vampire he saved, and tbh this scene made me cringe quite a bit. I cannot be bothered finding this passage again, but it honestly cannot be explained in words.

As a general note and a recurring theme across the novel, the author unnecessarily 'sucks off his ego' through the side characters and it's way too edgy. The main problem is that the characters are 2-dimensional at best. Apparently, he carries a fierce aura and bloodlust that makes people instantly paralyze with fear (insert sarcastic remark). Also, the enemies are so simple and easily hateable, with no complexity to their character at all. (He deserves to die, after all he was thinking about raping a small child, that's evil!!! Oh yeah, that apparently justifies killing thousands of other soldiers. I'm sure that they colonise and kill others for fun, and not because they have been brainwashed or etc.) This is literally just a poor attempt to justify the MC mass genociding a bunch of humans, and about how the MC is a misunderstood antihero who has great morals. This lack of complex characterisation can be seen in the female harem of his (no I will not talk about the loli aspect, or the copius amount of fan service), who greatly admire him for practically no reason. Listen, im not going to argue ethics, but if you want to talk about serious topics such as s*avery, colonisation and other nuances, at least be realistic and don't demonstrate it through a practically black and white, idealist work of fiction. There are far too many other 'unique qualities' the MC possesses to be written in this review, but I urge you to actively look for them and realise how little they make sense. I also would recommend looking at the characters and how easily loveable or hateable they are, and then at the parts where the author tries to argue ethics.

SUMMARY

. Too fast-paced

.2D characters

. No development (MC stays practically the same characteristically)

. World adapts to mc

. Biased towards the various extreme views the author holds on ethics (not that im saying s*avery is right)

. Edgy and 'ego sucking'

. Pretty dodgy woman sterotypes

. Simple and cliche <<less

Other reviews aside, I don't think it feels like a japanese novels with all those american slangs and changing the way how the MC speaks. And the monologues to dialogues are very cringe. I don't recommend this to the weak of heart despite it having a good premise. You can read the manga and then tell the difference of how horrible the translator butchered this work. Why do I say this? Cuz as a Japanese learner myself, this type of translation is extremely rude. No way in hell the author... more>> writes like this. Especially how he almost translated everything into such a rude way of speaking.

I hope someone else picks this up or the translator decides to delete the self inserts and all those poor american slangs.

I give it a 1/5. <<less

Generally speaking, I love it. At the beginning, it was a mostly heartwarming slice-of-life/romance, and even the eventual plots are somewhat episodic.

I would had rather there was no harem, and I definitely think the Hero (ine) takes too much of the plot for herself, but I still love the interactions in the family

I also absolutely love how irreverent are the speech and actions of the protagonist, and I idealize praise the translator for that god-like amazing adaptation.

Also, let's be clear, Lefi=Best Girl.

A good way to pass your time if you are bored. This novel isn't a legendary gem or something but it's more like the instant noodles that you enjoy when you're hungry and want to have something quick and easy.

This isn't a serious novel. It's a relaxed story about a demon lord living his life doing what he wants along with his family.

Thus there's a lot of things which seem too much of a convenience but it is what it is.

It's fun to read and that's what matters.

This one is the definition of niche. The first several chapters are a huge chore to get through and the writing is pretty mediocre. The big draw here is the main character. Either you enjoy him or you don't. And honestly, I think it's more fair to say either you can imagine yourself doing the things that he does or you can't. Because the MC is kind of all over the place as a character and more of a vehicle for personal wish fulfillment. If you can get that satisfaction... more>> from the story, this is a 4. If you can't then it's a 2. Hence I've rated it a 3. There are pretty annoying flaws throughout but it has a world that is pretty interesting to explore through the MC's eyes.

Edit after seeing some of the other reviews: there are plenty of noticeable flaws due to the MC's weirdness mentioned above but he at least provides a different story than most Japanese LN protags. So bear in mind that he does not have the usual fear of telling a girl that he likes her that you usually see in these stories. He also isn't hung up on morals from his old world, nor is he a cringey edge lord bent on vengeance. So even though he is weird he is at least different, which is a pretty clear positive. <<less
