This was an okay novel for me where a mortal slowly walks the path to immortality. The novel is at times interesting but at times boring. One good thing is that the MC is intelligent so you don't get some idiotic MC trying to fight everyone who looks at him the wrong way. I also like how the author will occasionally let the MC reunite with a past character he has encountered. Now to the bad things, one being there's too many exploration arcs. MC is thrust into exploring said... more>> forbidden or special place with xyz sidekicks. This will go on for over a hundred chapters and when he gets out, there will be some resting time before he his thrust into another exploration adventure. It gets so predictable that once certain people speak certain keywords, you can easily tell another exploration is coming up in the next few chapters.

The second being fights get dragged out with people revealing xyz trump cards. Even when MC fights those much weaker than him, they just happen to have an xyz trump card to drag out 3 - 5 chapters. The amount of special treasures that everyone including their mothers and their cousins pull out becomes dizzying after a few hundred chapters, let alone a thousand chapters.

The third thing is that there's too many screen time for side characters. You will see xyz chatting with abc to paint a scene, and then forever disappear into oblivion. It's fine if it's short, but the scene painting lasts for a few chapters and just drags. It's fortunate the novel has been completed but I can feel the agony of people chasing after this as it was being released in the past to having to read about side characters for a few days. Not to mention reading a fight that lasts for a week of releases.

Give this novel a try since it's completed, but just go in with low expectations as you get deeper into the chapter count. <<less

The repeated forced nerfing is plain s*upid.

The word inflation with unecesery text is sad.

Battles are lame and most of the time I skip em.

It started really good but at some point it started declining fast.

The first book felt relatively fresh. The main characters goals and aspirations were explicit and understandable. The antagonist was entertaining and the back and forth between the two kept things interesting. This tension was absolutely required because the main character has basically no personality. He's incredibly boring. I've no problems with slow plot development but you need something character, situation, setting, etc. To keep you engaged. This was fine for the first book.

Unfortunately it all fell apart in book two. The protagonist has no clear goal or motivation other than... more>> wrapping up a loose end from the first book which he goes about in an inexplicably roundabout way. With no real goal or tension to keep the readers interest we're left to rely on the characters - which are largely non-existent. Characters other than the protagonist have no depth and it feels like they don't exist beyond how they relate to the protagonist and his needs. Which brings us to the next problem. Whereas the protagonist was merely boring before in this book he becomes actively unlikeable.

He descends into the usual sociopathic hypocrisy so common to the genre. He kills both absolutely innocent people and the not so innocent but unrelated purely to make his life marginally more convenient or to satisfy his own curiosity. The unfortunately common sexist nonsense, which is a problem with the genre in general, rears its ugly head and we have the protagonist talking about he he doesnt need a woman to like him because "one she is his he'll make her like him" and other more specific references to marital r*pe. The women in the novel only exist to be adored, reviled or killed.

So with nothing to keep the reader interested, and a fair amount to drive them away, I ultimately dropped it half way through book two. If you don't care about sociopathic, sexist, r*pe apologists as main characters then stick with it. If you're in the mood for something that also has a slow build up but is significantly better written I'd strongly recommend Ze Tian Ji/Way of Choices. <<less

The first arc is amazing and hands down the best part of this novel, afterwards, it becomes a pretty bland story (I did enjoy some of the dangerous missions and arcs, but everything else became repetitive/boring to the point of dropping the story).

In the beginning, we have a good side character in MC's friend, amazing teacher Dr. Mo, mysterious technique he was given, and tension over whether the MC would survive - MC has to get stronger fast without letting ppl know or he will die.

Also, great use of mortal... more>> techniques to win battles (like positioning to have the sun in opponents eyes, blending into the surroundings, using poison and fog to hide, etc.). Really smart usage of abilities, but once MC joins the immortal world, this is useless and it turns into your standard Xianxia techniques and having OP items to use at the right time to win.

Once the first arc is over, MC hides in caves for years until he is forced to go out for resources/enlightenment/knowledge, etc. He will meet random throwaway side characters and joins a dangerous mission of sorts where a lot of people will die. Most will die to being arrogant, others to not having the right items. Fights are won through OP items.

MC becomes boring to read after some time, he just does the same sh*t and there are no interesting side characters.

The romance is one of the worst parts of this story. You will have women attack MC and he will spare them because of some s*upid sh*t whereas if it was a dude, MC woulda 100% killed them. He will keep getting involved in these situations and the same sh*t happens. <<less

Well for years I read one or two chapters per day and I enjoy it.

Protagonist is not some typical MC, who suddenly changes his character the moment he achieves power, but like the title said a "mortal" on his way of cultivation.

Means he mostly progesses slowly and carefully and usually prevails due to hard work and luck. So you can really believe he is a mortal and not some peerless superhero like in other stories.

Its more for people who like to explore the world he is in and are there... more>> for the journey, than people who prefer much character develpoment, romance or non stop action.

Doesn't mean there is no action but I would say it's more about the journey like the title says and a normal guy stumbling through a dangerous world with caution, hard work and luck. <<less

I found it refreshing that MC here starts out as a mortal commoner.

Unlike many other cultivation protagonists, he really doesn't have any grand destiny, hidden talent, dramatic past, or even noble birth.

Good journey log. The MC tries hard to be immortal. He does everything to reach the goal. As the path to the immortality is against the heaven, he does everything to be sure that he can live and advance along the path.

Killing, cowarding, life saving, stealing, running away, etc, are the must.

Feeling, emotion, social, friend, relative, lover.. All of that are not nescessary.

He has no friend. Also no foe, too. He can shake hand with his cut-throat enemy immediately if his foe offers the benefit for him to... more>> advance his next step.

FL & other females? No such thing exists in Han Li's mind. His wife is just a mere something that have name.

He likes Mr. Spock, or King Borg. There is no character relationship, no joke, no humor, no gag, no nothing..

So I drop after Ch.1246th.

IF you're eSport player and love reading xianxia too, this novel is for you. Just clear this stage, get tools, move to next stage, until the last one. That's all.

Update 04/2022

Read again until the end because of the Covid-19 isolation and there's no other good novel left to be read. He fights roboticly alone, while slowly building up his fighting power, toward the goal of being immortality.

In short, the novel is 5/5 in the 1st Mortal Arc. It drops to 3/5 in the Spirit World Arc first half, and 1/5 the second half. That 2nd half is full of word padding. You can skip 3-5 chapters without missing anything. The author also does that, too.
Spoiler

Five important people fight the obstracles together for a 100 chapters. Then, in a short 1 paragraph, all simply die except MC.

[collapse]
WTF !

The Worst of this novel.
Spoiler

While the author is able to give name to Fighting Art, secret art, equipment, etc, he can not name most of the characters. Most characters in the novel are refered to as Yellow hair old man, palace dressed woman, white suit beauty. Some important characters are called even by that over 3-400 chapters ! Also black light penetrate gray shadow, green fog explode within golden ball, blahblah destroying blowblowbo.

[collapse]

Hope you are able to enjoy that Spirit Arc. I can't. <<less

Compared to all the tr*sh, cookie cutter, stallion novels out there, this is way better. As long as you don't overthink it the plot doesn't seem forced. But personally I'd like to see the MC in a truly sorry state, utterly miserable, than just ingeniously escaping to far off distant lands.

What I disliked:

The MC is utterly plain looking with nothing really remarkable except his cultivation, but yet he still gets them girls? Seriously?!?! While the MC doesn't hunt after girls and isn't intent on forming a harem, he will always... more>> save/spare/help beautiful girls. But if a girl is plain (during the Trial of Blood and Fire), he doesn't save her. He views females with a very disgusting attitude, and just keeps getting stunned by their beauty. I mean the only emotion he feels is towards women-lust.

I really wish I could see him have a good bro he'd save or help out and have feelings other than lust towards only females.

But overall I suppose this is pretty good and no he doesn't truly r*pe anyone. I got confused by the tag, but his behaviour towards women really is disgusting. He's very scummy.

The translation is pretty good.

I'd rather give this sort of novel a try rather than read the same generic OP, stud horse MC with girls throwing themselves on him mindlessly <<less

It is good until the author forced his romance and casually made the female MC face tragedy so that the male lead can do something :v the MC doesn't even have a clear goal even in 900+ chapters and all the things he did was mostly forced because he is weak and is threatened losing his life.

damn...

I am currently halfway through volume 2. I find the MC to be ordinary with no ambition or special characteristics. The story line is average and progress rate is very slow. MC would just go with the flow and not desire anything and there is lack of romance and long standing friendships. I doubt we'd get to meet old friends of MC in future at all. There are many times where MC is forced to do others' bidding and the worst thing is he goes along with it.

Hope it gets... more>> better.. <<less

my favorite cultivation novel ever...!!

I admit, MTL-ing this novel was quite a tiring experience. I spent the whole month for this only. But it is indeed worth it.

So very really lack in romance. But I think it's okay. Main Lead is not OP. If he can get something good or above, the other characters also can. Everything in this novel is balance. So I prefer this one over other cultivation novels. A good material for binge reading indeed. Wait till the last chapter, readers will be very amaze with our... more>> Han Li <<less

If you a PERVERT (!), OR 'expecting Love & Romance'.. It's better to avoid or walk away from wasting your own time & complain here.. Lol

There's NO 'ROMANCE' or 'HAREM' mentioned on the 'GENRE/TAG' up there!!

... more>> so~no need to keep expecting for MC's love-life as we already cleared of Han Li's 'goal' frm the earlier chapter.. Heh!!

(Older post)

To begin with no understanding of such Cultivation-World-story.. Im glad to pick this novel for my very first to read.

Big applaud to their translator for their very great job.

The story plot is great and easy to understand about "path of cultivation" for newbie like me. (^^` ppl should stop comment the "comparison" of the main character here (Han Li) with those other "show- off-b tch-with-fck*ng- immediate Level up game like- tr*shY- Story Plot". :P

As I see, Han Li might not be such a-Show-Off-bad-ass as other novel ML.. But behind his low-profile-character, he's trully A Genius. He learned from below. From medicinal study of plants and to concoct his own pill for the path of his Cultivation. Also to mention his expeditions journey for serching/learning knownledges

(not like those lazy-as*hole-author who writes SHORTCUT-tr*sh plot).. Have. To say, this novel trully an exciting one! <<less

An interesting but a bit slow read however is still very interesting. not your usual OP MC, more of a normal cultivator making normal decisions while not having major luck. MC is selfish and doesn't care much about others including his family so don't really expect much close relations... or consistency since there is quite a few plot holes and plot armors

It does however picks up and gets better after 300

The part before MC joins the sect (so basically before he's a legit cultivator) was nice & interesting, I won't say more because of spoilers.

But after that MC is just a coward, in a bad way. He's incredibly paranoid and overly cautions (which would've been fine if he was actually consistent), but then at the last moment he constantly gets these reckless impulses and just go all YOLO which made his careful planning, hiding, extreme cautiousness with 0 risk taking, from before completely pointless and often enough it just comes... more>> down to plot armor in the end regardless of all that.

This makes it feel like you're reading a lot of useless text for the majority of the chapters, since the MC isn't being consistent anyway.

You could say that he's actually very human in that way, so I guess it kind of ends up being realistic in that the MC frequently f*cks up at the last moment or give himself away by careless mistakes after doing everything else perfectly etc. But I don't think that was intentional by the Author, and either way, it doesn't make it any more enjoyable or interesting to read...

I think the novel is worth giving a shot, but if you grow tired of it, I would recommend reading the Author's other novel Demon's Diary/Mo Tian Ji and Renegade Immortal/Xian Ni. Calm, calculating, and cautious MCs without being cautious to the point of cowardice/fear/hiding away in a hole for 500+ years only to come out later and do what they should've done 500 years earlier...

Considering that Demon's Diary is by the same author, I think it's pretty much just a straight up better version of A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality. You don't find out much about exactly what happened on the prison island, but you can just imagine stuff like the beginning of this novel and Renegade Immortal's to fill the blanks and get the MC's cautious and untrusting nature. <<less

The story is boring overall, or I should say that the MC has 0 personality at all. He is beyond boring. At first I was drawn in by how hard everything was for him and how he was able to barely achieve much after much effort, but meh I rather find all chapters very short and the story drawn out unnecessarily so. None of the side characters have any space for growth, nor do they last long, or are they relevant whatsoever.

A slow paced novel, the MC always think before he act and is actually low-key (not your others MCs where they say I need to stay low-key, but just does the exact opposite few paragraph later).

The MC start as a poor boy, in martial art sect (martial art and cultivation are different, an MA is still considered mortal, a cultivator is considered an immortal), and for some reasons he start his cultivating, from this point and onward all his move are calculated and his goal are doable, neither lucky nor... more>> unlucky in his hunt for the thing he needs to cultivate.

Pretty much all the conflict are related to benefits (fighting over treasure, pills and so on), and the most important part it's "FREE FOR ALL", (again it start as FFA and it's end in FFA, the people only gang the one who picked the treasure) and it's not always the MC who picks the best one.

Overall I find this novel quite relaxing. As everything in it is balanced. Tough the lack of romance may be a problem for some, but it really does suit the novel setting. <<less

Slow and the impact is not that powerful.

No hint of romance, But that is immortality about. Relieving your self of worldly affairs.
Fairly balance lucky chance. Compared to other titles, MC's lucky chance is not that OP. Which I like.
Struggle exists. Unlike other title's MC which have it real good. For example "Ow, I need Dragon's golden blood essence." and not much time after, MC will recieve Primodial Dragon's Void Enhanced Platinum Blood Heart Essence. More that what MC has wished for.

Characters are easily forgotten. I do not know... more>> what this novel is missing but, over all. It would be a fairly good read.
This one is a step by step record as the title implied.

I dropped after catching up to the latest translation, because it is really hard to endure not having to read another chapter. The anxiety builds up. Now after seeing that it reached 500 chapters, I have another 200 to read. Maybe in those 200 chapters, the true element of this novel will unravel it self. I wish you guys a fun read in this novel. I wish my self the same. HAHAHA. <<less

Here's the thing - it was gonna be a 3 star review - but thinking about it ti deserves 2 stars at most.

The MC is interesting in some ways (tho usually dull and predictable, tho therefore consistent which is a good thing). And the world building is not that bad... However - my main qualm is that pretty much everything in this novel is filler.

Let me elaborate - no real companions, no real side characters - plots are devised in a greatly descriptive manner yet their resolutions always left me... more>> baffled (spending 10-20 chapters explaining/expecting something and resolving it somewhere-in-between-chapters without us really experiencing it except in those 1-2 paragraphs about it?!) - so much is said that has no relation to the plot - characters introduced, places, sects etc etc.. - that no longer appear or appear in passing..

Had I read 10-50 chapters this would be acceptable as the novel would still be "beginning" - but after 300+ chapters I clearly saw the patter and it's not getting any better. So I cannot recommend it. <<less
