“If it’s a barbarian you want, then it’s a barbarian you’ll get!”

Reclaimed by her noble family after being swapped at birth, Qin Yining is bestowed a hellish family instead. Just as she turns her situation around and gains acceptance, her country is plunged into danger instead.

Shades of gray color the world. No side is completely good, and no side is completely evil. Refusing to be a trophy won by men, Qin Yining carves her own path instead. In this absolutely riveting and spellbinding tale, what does our MC do when an entire dynasty is at stake?

I'm 100+ chapters in of the 1200+ chapters and it's already painfully obvious the novel has bitten off more than it can chew and is going full soap opera.

Despite the problems, it has some very good points. For the most part the MC is a really well done character. Perhaps a little inhumanly calculating and competent but overall a well done character. The father is also above average. His motivations are believable, well developed and in line with the setting. The rest not so much. The fake child is a... more>> suicidal megalomaniac, s*upid is too kind a term to describe, the emperor, the grandmother and the mother. The rest are just rather flat.

Good for the first 100-200 chapter and after that just gets incredibly exhausting to read. I finished out of spite and when I saw there was 700 ch more to go I want to cry and run away.

good historical politic/intrigue novels have a mixture of scheming and resting so the reader doesn't get tired. This novel does not and just throws drama at you and retains old drama too so its just one big shitpile of drama that you're left with.

Made me all the more disappointed because it WAS really... more>> quite good 100 chapters and but just kept going downhill. <<less

I'm totally regretting reading this immediately. It's not yet completely translated at this moment and that's making my heart break. I like this novel a lot even though sometimes I think there's just so many dramas, but it was all worth reading. There are times where it really makes you nervous especially when endearing characters gets in danger. It's not a novel that shows rainbows and butterflies, most times the MC's situations seems so bleak but she manages to get through it through some clever plot. And the love between... more>> the leads are so pure, there's no smut here at all, but the conversations and relationship between Yining and Pan Xiao, and Yining's father Huaiyan is worth all the time spent reading.

<Read Completely>

What a long ride. I finally MTL'ed it coz I don't think I can wait years for droplets of updates, although it's really a shame coz I feel like a lot has been lost in machine translation. This novel has great writing, but can be very exhausting at times. Yes they had a happy ending. But the journey there is just torture, Qin Yining just can't catch a break. I would say that this is a story of how Qin Yining has helped Pang Xiao fulfill his destiny of being an emperor.
Spoiler

It's more than just supporting him from behind, but experiencing so many tragedies herself because she's always on the frontline doing things for him like looking for treasures, finding money and food to help him feed the army, getting kidnapped and tortured again and again. I honestly feel bad for her, although she's got a calm and sharp mind, I feel like even in the end, when she became a queen, I wonder if it's all worth it because it seems so vague what will happen in the future as the story kept trying to induce the part where part of keeping a stable government is to keep a harem, and even though it's not Pan Xiao's personality to take another woman, I wish it was not so vague. I wish there's some side-stories to show what will happen later. Plus, she's still stuck with that small-minded mother-in-law. Her kids looks like Pan Xiao but this bish still insist that they're not her son's children and even tells the kids these. I would chuck this lady into the cold palace where she can't make any trouble.

[collapse]

I feel regretful on how some characters ended up, esp Lu Heng. He has been a solid character from the start and I wish his ending would have been different.
Spoiler

And they broke up the whole gang after Pang Xiao became emperor. The Qin family went back to the desert to live there permanently, Ji Zeyu went to sea. I would have liked to know how this would all pan out in the future through some side stories. Haiz.

[collapse]

In the end, this is a great story, although kind of depressing a lot of times, but I feel like the ending could have been better. <<less

I was quite fed up by the continuous praising over and over by the same characters.

I mean, I know how grateful they felt and will be loyal to the MC/ML but they didn't have to repeat it every time. It's redundant.

I think by getting rid of the over praise conversations was enough to reduce 1/3 of the existing chapters.

This one is a novel with quite a strong beginning, at first our MC returns to her birth family after she is swapped due to some nefarius scheme, early on, she realizes that what expects her is not a happy family, but a tough life of political scheming, mistreatment, and the fact that, as a woman, she is only perceived by her family as a tool for marriage.

Onto happier things, in spite of our MC living a hard life in the mountains, she is fortunately very clever and literate, and... more>> early on she realizes that sometimes, simply being quiet and lowering one's head does not solve your problems, so she asserts herself, physically, a life in the mountains (that includes things like lumberjacking and wrestling with wolves) - not to mention that she excercises daily, made her very strong, strong enough to not take crap from anyone, although to be fair what worries me is that the novel states her in the beginning as very strong, but she might end up turning out to be one of those "who might be strong, but as a woman, she cannot compare with men"; she is a girl who knows when to push, when to pull and when to make use of things.

What awes me the most is definitely the side characters, most of them are written in a way that you can see that they are not simply painted in a color or the other, but are instead a complex matrix of circumstances, you can see that there are layers to them, for example in a mere 80 chapters you can go from hating her paternal grandmother, liking her, and really disliking her again, others you will simply hate, like the disgusting emperor, or the other (enemy nation) disgusting emperor (yes, both emperors are so incredibly infuriating!), and the unbeliveably short-sighted, s*upid, foster sister; other characters can be quite surprising, both in personality and bearing like the scholar uncle, or the priestess, characters that at first you don't really know what to expect and they turn out in ways that you couldn't expect.

As for the male lead, to me, that's what makes or break a romance novel, I simply cannot stomach one of those overbearing, almost rapist douchebags that the only thing they got going are their appearance and power (political or otherwise), fortunately, so far the ML is not like that, he is a man with a lot of baggage, described as ruthless and a butcher on the battlefield, he has however proved to be a respectful, kind, logical, and honourable... he is also a tsundere...

The way this novel is written is absolutely brilliant, the descriptions are vivid without being annoyingly poetical and the story often goes to the point without wasting time on senseless repetition (although there are a few slow episodes in-between the arcs or incidents). And let's not forget the fact that the story is written in such a way that it grabs you, refuses to let you go, and then takes you along in an emotional rollercoaster and you won't want to do anyhting else other than find out what comes next (as of chapter 89 I had to stop and wait to build a decent stockpile, the cliffhangers were killing me!), I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good romance with a good plot. <<less

Although this book is still fairly new compared to the other novels on my reading list, it's already moved up the ranks to be one of my top favorites. It's just that amazing.

The story is a little unique among the XianXia novels I've read so far.

Spoiler

The MC was born as the legitimate daughter of an important official but was switched at birth with another girl. While the MC grew up in harsh conditions in the countryside for most of her life, the girl who was switched with her lived as the eldest, official daughter of her household. But then the MC's father finally finds her and brings her back to the manor to reclaim her identity. Unfortunately for her, not all of the members of her family happily open their arms to her, especially the girl who had taken her place for the past fourteen years. But this is all just the beginning.

[collapse]

There is no transmigration, reincarnation, or cultivation in this; no modern knowledge or magical cheats. The MC of this book got to where she is now all on her own with just her brain and survival reflexes. Her challenges are no less difficult than any other MC out there, but she deals with these challenges just as impressively, if not even more. She's no arrogant white lotus or Mary Sue, nor is she invincible and able to get out of every single situation unscathed. In fact, I admire her even more for this. She's pretty real in her thoughts and actions, and there is room for very good character development, too.

Every chapter of the story is interesting and has a very good pace. The family drama, arguments, and dialogue are not too hard to follow. Even the main antagonists are somewhat crafty and give a real challenge to the MC. I love watching to see what she will do to turn the situation around in her favor. One of the most recent arcs was a wild roller coaster of emotion to read and I almost cried real tears because I knew that the MC's female lead halo couldn't really help her completely salvage the situation. I have never felt this way for any other Chinese novel. It was both devastating and beautiful at the same time. The Male Lead is actually not what I expected at all. The author chose to take a different route than the whole cold-black-belly-who-fell-for-the-MC-at first-sight trope. There's a deeper story between the two and it's definitely refreshing after reading the same kind of romance over and over again in other xianxia novels.

This book is so well written and developed that it could almost be passed off as an official, published, hardcover novel. It's actually known to be one of the best Chinese web novels out there. Even people who aren't really into XianXia novels might enjoy this. <<less

I surely do not understand why there are those who rated this novel with one star. It is definitely worth more than five stars. The female lead does not have any transmigration cheat with her but only her wisdom from a series of unfortunate events that made her strength grow both physically and mentally.

I am someone who yearns for a strong female lead (not necessarily physical) and a supportive male lead. I admit I am a very picky reader and would only rely on that condition plus reviews. I wouldn't... more>> read or take time to appreciate novels that satisfy the genre that I like, good reviews, but characters failing to live up to expectations (bad fl, good ML and vice versa). But novels like Return of the Swallow truly leaves good impression in my mind due to the main character's wit and resolution. The ML hasn't even been completely introduced, and doesn't have to for me to get so hooked immediately. Her presence and skills alone are enough for me to keep praising this wonderful novel.

Volarenovels truly has a skill in finding such good stories. Most importantly, the emotions and lessons equipped in the story won't completely materialize and delivered effectively without the hard work of the translators it has. Their translations are truly professionally done. Thank you so much for your hard work. Good job. I am truly looking forward to the next chapters. <<less

This series doesn't have too many reviews right now so I'll add one. It's not far in yet, but so far I really like it! I'm not generally a fan of transmigrated poison assassin in ancient China novels, so this one really strikes a chord with me because the MC is just a plain old smart, strong young woman whose only superpower is being very world-wise. I also really enjoyed how there is a contrast between the inner court politics of her immediate family and the sincerity of her maternal... more>> side's.

The translation is excellent (as expected of the Volare family), so there's really not too much to criticize at this point. Looking forward to more chapters! <<less

In the end this novel's all empty talk and an infuriating waste of time.

Though at first I was in awe of the author's way in building plot and creating characters, around chapter 250-ish I realized that this novel was just the more extremely roundabout and long-winded version of any generic ancient CN you can find here. I can't help but think that probably the author just prolonged our (and the MC) suffering just to milk this novel all of its worth.

Going about the schemes, plot and antagonists that littered around... more>> this novel, I belatedly realized that 'Oh, it's just the same old story'.

My point is, you see, although the characters were initially a thrill to read and the way that MC interacted with them was great, the further you went in the more you realized that the characters' formula was the same old. There are every choice of any generic condiments you can find here, just pick your choices of infatuated princes, evil grandma, infuriating fake daughter, lustful emperor, snide relatives, weak mother, disaster empress, scheming ministers, coward generals, etc.

This is also related to what I said that this novel's all empty talk. MC has had several bouts with the fake daughter, even to the point of successfully kicking her out due to a severe scheme that failed. But then a few chapters later she returned all because of MC's great pity for the world. Wow as expected of a holy girl Mary Sue. It got so worse that the fake daughter even got a chance to survive by pushing her good friend to die and she still blamed MC for the assassination. Since I don't have the habit of reading infuriating novels, I dropped this novel at that point.

I also found the MC unrealistic. First, can you tell me if you'd believe that a girl who lived in the wild for 6 years can quickly know the rules of aristocratic family and fight with a fake daughter who lived her whole life in the capital? Her mannerism when she first arrived didn't reflect that she has lived in the mountain for years, but more like a proper noble daughter who was merely sent out to a distant zhuangzhi. The way she cleverly refuted and attacked people verbally were inconsistent with her wild upbringing. Even her initial physical description was unrealistic with her former lifestyle, with the author merely brushing about a short-lived calloused hand. Second, she claimed that she has won and ate ferocious wolves in the mountain but her strength didn't reflect that.

See what I meant? It's an awfully generic and common story hidden behind the author's long winded writing. Although I wanted to give this a high rating, I will always think that this novel's just a more logical but roundabout version of a middle-aged housewife's favourite prime time soap opera. <<less

What I like from this novel is Qin Yining and her dad's relationship. I think that's one of the purest thing in this novel. How Qin Meng came from indifferent to the point raising her like a son (that's actually taboo as far as I know, since women belongs to the rear court and shouldn't have a hand in politics.)

The relationship between the mother-daughter, although it's teeth gritting at first, I came to love it too. The mother pretty much progress a lot imo.

And I also really like... more>> Yining and Pang Xiao's relationship. It progresses naturally, and the romance scenes are good.

What I hate tho, the Qin family is soooo hateful, especially the grandma and the imposter. And I hate why authors just didn't deal with them swiftly. Near 300 chp and the imposter and grandma still there, sigh... I understand there's a need to make their final deal satisfying but at this point I'm just gonna strangle them myself.

Also I really hate how THERE'S NO FCKING BREAK. Things always came one after another and I'm exhausted, give my baby Yining a timeout pls 😢

Considering that this is like 1.2k chapters, it's understandable that it feels drag on. I'm gonna continue when my heart is ready. I feel like a masochist reading this, really wants to strangle some useless ppl lol

Translation wise it's really good, but I really wish they keep pinyin for things untranslatable like -shi suffix for married women. It always bugging me how they called them née Sun and so on. Should just go with Sun-shi from the beginning. <<less

One of the top novels in the novel updates. Both MC and ML are likeable, kind and smart. Many characters have 3 dimensions to them. Except for all annoying female villains.

I liked the conflicts. I liked how the six emperors mentioned in the novel are unworthy in different ways. Dayan emperor was self indulgent, his son incompetent in politics, north ji emperor a dictator, dazou emperor was paranoid, siqin emperor unscrupulous, and daimyo was unreliable.

Relationship between MC and her father was a delight.

Though I liked the story, I can't help... more>> but think that it would be better if MC never returned to home. At home, father was too obedient to emperor which led to a lot of suffering for the MC then he changed for the better and became a badass character.

After MC married, ML was caring about the people and did not want to start war or kill li qitian. Which lead to so much harm. Mostly it was the MC who was in a fatal situation.

Author though knew the problem in her writing, still continued it. For eg, MC body was strong, healthy and flexible. Many times author wrote she wanted to practice martial art, MC never did. Despite having time and opportunity inorder to give MC a vulnerability.

Another is the repeated capturing of MC by enemies. Both MC and ML are aware whenever she travels alone, she got caught. They say that they are prepared enough but enemies always find the guards no. And their travel routes. This method was repetitive and frustrating.

Both MC and ML were too kind and let go of so many opportunities to beat the villain only to act when their family was threatened.

I personally felt ML doesn't deserve MC. He can't give her a secure and peaceful life, always on the verge of death by emperor. To marry each other, MC had to lose her reputation and her father had to help them. Even his own family is not good. Only ML grand ma treated MC good his mom and grand dad are disgusting. ML can't even protect his parents and children. They had to hide in a place MC found while escaping from enemies.

Still the politics, world building, many likable characters make the story a good read <<less

If you're a fan of historical novels, you definitely wouldn't want to miss out on this one! You'd love ROS if you have read The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage.

I really love the MC, Qin Yining! She captured my heart when she beat up one of the most annoying characters in the novel, Qin Huining (not that it got through any common sense into her, sadly). She plays nice if the other party does, but doesn't hesitate to strike back if they try to hurt her. If... more>> words don't go through, she doesn't hesitate to physically beat her intentions in x) Naturally, as she isn't a transmigrator who has knowledge of the plot or a reincarnator, she isn't all that omnipotent. She relies on her experience with the harsh world to figure out people's intentions and plot to keep her dear ones and herself safe.

One aspect of this novel that I enjoy is that just because QY is the MC, everything isn't going her way all the time. She can't always protect everything she holds dear. I don't feel that everything is secure, which makes me have this constant fear of danger lurking in the corner. I highly enjoy this feeling, as it makes me more and more curious to what's going to happen next and keeps my interest all-time high. I was a little skeptical when I saw that it was 1000+ chapters long, but I'm now looking forward because the story isn't bland at all!

I also love the way she interacts with her family! For once, the father isn't an as*hole as I'd thought he'd be. In fact, he is very proud of her and I love their interactions, they're endearing. Another development I enjoyed is her mother's character. She went from an ignorant naive fool to a more aware lady.

There are some recurring villainous characters, but overtime they become little pebbles and QY doesn't really bother much in dealing with them, which is pretty nice. I don't want to read a bunch of chapters dedicated to some senile fool whose greed for status has cooked up another plot over and over again (I'm looking at you, Old Dowager =_=).

The juiciest part of the whole novel is the ROMANCE. GOD, PANG XIAO, OUR ML, IS LIKE A KINDERGARTNER IN LOVE. I LOVE IT! He is so funny when he's trying to express his feelings for QY. I also love he takes the big picture into consideration and doesn't just saunter in and shower his love for QY cause he can. The times he does, there's always a reason behind it (and I also know he enjoys doing it huehue). Their romance is pretty hard, since they're from opposing nations. They aren't able to publicly display their affections to everyone, and have to do it in private.

The cherry on the top is the amazing translation! The quality is very good, and the flow in the story is smooth due to the translator's skills! I've read the translator's previous work, Doomed to Be Cannon Fodder (ANOTHER MUST READ NOVEL!!), and enjoyed her translation. Thank you so much, etvolare, for translating this gem <333

This is my first time reviewing, and there's so many things I want to say about this novel but I can't compress my thoughts! Well, what are you doing, reading this unworthy review? Go and read ROS! <<less

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much when I started reading this novel. There are too many of the same genre and I was ready to have to overlook plotholes and one-dimensional antagonists... But I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, the main character suffers setbacks. Although minor, every one of them is a catalyst that helps our main character grow, which is great. Secondly, there are no Mary Sues. There are other pursuers other than the ML, but they aren't bees and don't just like the MC... more>> because she has the MC halo. AND there is character growth !! (I know amazing) the relationship between MC and her family as well as the MC and the ML go through obstacles and change, for better or worse. Not 0nly that but it only keeps getting better and better. I recommend it to anyone who likes politics, palace intrigue as well as a good romantic sub-plot. <<less

  • Qin Yining: I like how Qin Yining, who has hardened her heart and relies totally on herself, is taking tiny baby steps in trusting, relying and opening her heart to Pang Zhixi.
  • Pang Zhixi : I 1000% like Pang Zhixi but I haven't noticed much character development on his part. He is already fully developed.
  • Qin Huaiyuan - Being a father in ancient times comes to terms with having daughter as his heir and also scoffs at other people's son when compared to his daughter. He appreciated talent. Loved it.
  • Nee Sun - From having a brain made of boiled cabbage to a loving and caring mother with some degree of common sense.
  • Old Dowager - This woman... she personifies the term GREED. I dislike her from the deepest corner of my heart - in spite of knowing that she is a fictional character. I wish I had bow and arrow; I would have used her as target practice.
  • Li Qitian - Well, he is a scumbag for using his sister as a chess piece. But, gotta admire his scheming mind. This guy is Evil with Brain. That's interesting to read. I would not like to be a target of his scheming :)
  • Yuchi Yan - He is a product of ancient times. Never uses his brain to think. His eyes send data directly to his lower half of the body instead of his brain. The nerve system in his body is defective. Not connected to his brain at all. All wires go down. This fellow should just go into reincarnation cycle and be reborn as painter. Can't hate or like or pity him.
  • Lu Heng is interesting character too; intelligent & scheming. For unknown reasons which even I cannot fathom, I LIKE HIM. Hehehehe...

I like other side characters too. Mainly Yining and Zhixi's supporters like their bodyguards, managers, friends etc... good people.

There are many characters who I believe should line up with Yuchi Yan to go into reincarnation cycle. At the top of the list is Qin Huining.

I absolutely adore this novel! The main character is a strong, witty, and of course attractive female. She's a strong MC without being overbearing and without hugging the ML's thigh. The romance is realistic and their relationship is equal.

The plot is unexpected and I really enjoy reading this novel. It's got court intrigue, action, and familial drama (which is less fun, but necessary for character growth). Overall, really great!

At first I was a bit skeptical about this novel because I was used to reading isekai novels, time traveling and whatnot. But instead of slowing down or stopping midway, I continued to read because it was so good! (To me of course).

I liked how the FL was really smart but still had her flaws. She wasn’t perfect, which made this feel more realistic. How a lot, A LOT of deaths, schemings, happened and the FL smoothly handled it with the help of her dad and sometimes ML.
