Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

I've highly enjoyed this from start to finish. It isn't really a revenge story so much as "dark side is good" story. It is deeper than most novels and the character info and descriptions at the end of each chapter are wonderful.

People are complaining usually because they are expecting standard revenge novel when MC looses all morality and common sense just because something terrible happened to him.

This is not a story with super simplistic characters whose personality comes down to EVIL. Some antagonists are them because they follow their own benefit, and some are idealistic people who due to misinformation, or trusting selfish people. The two direct antagonists are literally heroes of their own story, and if it was written from their perspective, we wouldn't bat an eye about what happened,... more>> and we would root for them to defeat the MC. That creates a much more interesting conflict than just "there is a bad person that hurt me so I'll hurt them", although there is a lot of that too.

The point of initial sequence is not to establish crime that must be paid for, but to establish wounds on MC's psyche that change him, and he struggles with. Story instead of just quenching thirst for revenge examines it, its consequences, and moral implications. <<less

"Revenge is a dish that is best served cold" so as the saying says but in this novel it is half as*ed and immature revenge. Oh and "s*upidity is incurable illness since time immeorial" or "you can't cure a s*upid person" is like the saying says just like the MC for example- he wants to be a nobleman cause there might be a chance that the so called cheaters won't attack cause he is a noblrman, f*&k that LOL. The world of lambda has little human rights and plague with... more>> war and political struggles and this MC just nonchalantly saying he wants to be one even though he has no experience in politics and no talent for it. that's why he is putting the cart before the horse. The MC has no what so ever an inkling signs of experience of being suffered, tormented, tortured a lot in his 1st and 2nd life in earth and origin (except for some s*upid random trauma the author chose to have for the MC) and just shrugs away his experience in his third life in lambda, no signs of caution and insight at all.

Cocnlusion - I personally wanted to rate it 5 stars but the japanese novels have notoriety with immature MC. I only find 5 novels where the MC is isn't immature and acting human like and thoughts like a human would. Don't get me wrong I would have not mind it if he was really only aninfant/toddler/boy but he his mental age should be an adult or at worst at young adult. This novel should have been a masterpiece if the MC isn't illogically immature despite his mental age and he awfully putting the cart before the horse a lot of times but sometimes his followers just solves it. <<less

I've waited until chapter 100 to write this review in order to be as objective as possible.

The premise of revenge to s*upid gods and 100 people with god-like power is very interesting. The MC development is also very stimulating to follow, especially with his inherent inferiority complex that thinks that he would definitely lost against a god if he's not strong enough.

I read similar novels which are Arifureta and Overlord, and have to say that unfortunately The Death Mage is a little bit behind those two in terms of story... more>> progression. But The Death Mage character development and the abundance of different personalities makes you want to follow their development closely.

All the people who review after the initial village scene... please read a bit further.... he does take revenge or get even with people directly responsible. This is a great story with balanced world building/ kingdom building, character leveling and development. Though pace is slow (mc's physical growth) the story is lightning fast. There are so many things the author focused upon. Im sad I started reading this now. I think around 100+ chapters should have been better. Now we are left with a lingering sense of suspense

A biased and disorganized review.

The description of the novel and the beginning few chapters of the novel sets the novel at a pretty dark tone, with what seems like a serious revenge plot (our MC gets f*cked over by the incompetent transmigration god and gets tortured and experimented on during his 2nd life, and during his 3rd life, his mother gets burned at the stake, pretty much right after he was born, because she had a child with a vampire). However, all that soon changes, and to be honest...I feel... more>> quite cheated.

The story soon gets pretty damn slice of life-ish when he meets the ghoul village. Once again, JP novel authors just can't seems to stray away from the theme of using like 90% of the chapters to introduce Japanese culture into a foreign world, because every transmigrated hero is Japanese for some god damn reason (personally, I have nothing against Japanese culture, but it's just irks me that 99% of transmigrated people are Japanese and 99% of the time, they always have to introduce Japanese culture into those worlds). <<less

There are a lot of interesting moments in the story, but also a lot of dumb ones. As one person wrote: I don't know whether I'm getting smarter or dumber reading this.

The beginning is interesting, lots of antagonists and events. The development of an entire nation starting with a tribe of Ghouls (not the Ghouls we are used to seeing).

But I would like to talk about the other half.

Spoiler

First of all. After all the big shots on the continent have been defeated, MC sets off for a new one, where the Demon King once dwelt. There the battles with the demigods start. After victory, he frees the Earth Goddess Botin and Peria the Water Goddess also stops pretending to be asleep.

That's it. Alda has no allies left except small gods (Botin said she won't help anyone, but she won't let them hurt Vandalieu either, what nonsense).

Anyway, at this time Rodcorte fixes Edgar's soul with parts of Guduranis, and Avalon (who became a demigod in the world of Origin) is transferred to this world by making a body out of Guduranis parts. In short, Guduranis is reborn in the Kingdom of Orbaum and a serious but brief battle ensues where Vandalia saves everyone and absorbs Guduranis.

Alda is shocked. He shackles Rodcorte with his skills and makes him just give his blessings to the heroes. He releases the sealed creatures and gods with the remaining parts of Guduranis around the world and begins the Amid Empire's crusade on Talosheim. While all of Vandaliau's allies are distracted by armies and parts of Guduranis, MC fights with Heitz's party.

The two girls who did not participate in the mu*der of his mother are forcibly teleported out of there. The dwarf girl is killed. Heinz brings both Bellwood and Alda down on himself. Alda's abilities act on the sword and begin to shackle Vandal's soul with each strike. But Vandalieu begins to be prayed to in Origen and Alda's powers cease to work. (We also learn in this battle that Vida and Zaccart's child, the first vampire, is alive. He helps MC in this battle)

Alda flees with the cracked souls of Heitz and Bellwood to the chained Rodcourt to have them repaired. But Zuruvarn carries the hero after them and bids a pathos-filled farewell to Alda. The hero destroys everyone there. Alda is simply chained up so that his power can continue to keep the world.

That is, there hasn't even been ONE DIALOGUE with the Rodcourts, the culprits of everything. The setup of the story by this time seems really dumb, I was hoping that at least the final dialogue would clarify something.

In short, peace comes after that. With Vida, they made a reincarnation system for each world. MC is a god. Makes hell for sinners to pay back after death, not just be reborn.

He also proposes to his mother. DID THEY HAVE THAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP? You practically forget the rest of the harem. Zero romantic relationships. Drinking blood is the most you can expect.

[collapse]

In general, the further you go, the worse it gets. Zero romantic interactions, the protag will not grow. The ending is flawed. <<less

I've read it until chapter 284 but in actuality i've read until the end in WN.

people who commented and give little stars surely didn't know entirely and misunderstood about the greatness of this WN.

other would deduce that Vandalieu already abandoned his revenge, but that's totally wrong. Vandalieu didn't forget his revenge, he just reduce the target out of necessity.

Vandalieu only targeted some potential enemy that threatening his happiness that he's been build in Talosheim. and in the process he's trying hard not to get others involved, but the gods and... more>> some misunderstood people keep trying to antagonize him out of fear.

The development of character named Vandalieu are quite better. at first he's going insane and develop grotesque mind due to Rodcorte's mistake and Palpapek and Heinz involvement in Darcia demise. but as time goes by, the family he build in Talosheim was able to heal him greatly, and ultimately become the reason he changed his view of the world (something that Vida deeply wished before she reincarnate Amamiya into Vandalieu)

the reason he despise Heinz rather than explainable reasons (which little reduced by the time Darcia resurrected) the potential reason is the "grotesque mind" that embedded in his soul and the fact Heinz are still using Vandalieu's mom death as their ladder to their infamy, also his involvement with Alda who's cleary in the wrong (if only Heinz would kindly leave the continent with Selen, Vandalieu would not want to kill him)

Vandalieu's journey in this WN are quite epic, and gradually make him developed into the great figure that no one ever want to ignore.

the downside of this WN... might be there's lot's of characters, and the author gradually make some of them (minor but important) mysteriously dissapear with every chapter advanced. dunno why, maybe the author forgot hehe.

as for the harem... welp, vandalieu is quite likeable character, and it's not destroying any plot whatsoever. so I accept it.

but overall it's good reads <<less

Ok so I really had to put my grain on salt on this. This novel has it's good points, as it has its bad points.

The selling point for most people is in the first few chapters (like most boring or mainstream books), but the longer you read the better it gets. I re read the novel 3 times up to the translated chapter before going to the Japanese page (the translator pace is unbearably slow and google translate is good enough to handle the entire story) to read the rest... more>> of it, and it just made me think how much the author thought ahead while writing the first chapters.

I'm not going to be very specific, but he does foreshadow a lot of the events that will happen in the future
Spoiler

a certain someone becoming a god and defeating him, to give an example.

[collapse]

The world building is magnificent, I felt I was actually reading about a world that trully exist and that includes most characters, even some that will only appear once seem to have just enough depth to make you think they are alive, to some degree.

My only complaint in that regard is the character glossary at the end of each chapter, which is an info dump. there is a difference between learning how a chimera came to X place, and getting the full report of their life expectancy, reproductive cycle and all of that. It's too much even if you can just ignore it with no consequences.

Now the characters. I'm not going in detail about every single one as there are too many, even the author has no other choice than ignore some, or most of them near the end. I'll talk about the main ones, our protagonist and his biggest enemies.

Spoiler

there is no plot armor per se. Our protagonist is literally a god of death in the making, so killing such an enemy is a chore on itself and most of his companions are undead too. Still I find there is virtually 0 deaths on the MC side.

At some point a lot of people died during a fight with a resurrected demon king, and he just reincarnated them with their memories. I get it, he has the means, but it feels... Too good and nice for him. But thats about it, no one on his side will die which is frustrating, but I prefer that over unnecessary drama or "dying because someone has to".

Now, Heinz. Yes, one single human man blessed by alda is about as inmortal as our MC. Not because he can't die, but because alda does everything in his power to keep him alive. Nurses him and his party in a place where even if he dies, he comes back alive, he gives him the most powerful weapon and god to serve. Most of the story just goes to show how much Alda believes in him, but near the end we can see how Alda himself starts going mad and all his support turns into acts an evil god would do. Fanaticism and madness are hard to convey, but the slow descent is interesting.

And last and least, Rodcorte. Most readers hated him from the beginning until the end. But I for once enjoyed seeing all his schemes go to hell and fail miserably. And oh boy, for everyone reading this, he does get what he deserves. They all do

[collapse]

Now, some of the few things I didn't like.

This one isn't on the novel but the translation. It's too slow. 2 chapters per month in a noble with 513 chapters? The manga might actually finish before the translation does.

As I said before, there is a lack of casualties on the side of the MC. I hate unnecessary drama, but the fact no one dies is a bit bothering. About 1-5 do get defeated and die (one being the MCs mom at the beginning of the story), but trully, death isn't the end for it.

And my other real complaint is the MC. He'll stay a shota until the end of the novel. It's only half an issue because it was actually a clever way to stop the classical "harem" isekai novel.

Spoiler

At the end he stays a shota, which he can change if he wanted to but for some unknown reason he doesn't.

[collapse]

That'd be it. I don't regret reading this novel at all, so anyone reading this I hope you enjoy it. Support the translator if you want, or if you don't want to wait for years go to the wikia and follow the link to the original website. Google doesn't translate everything correctly, but it's more than good enough to read (especially if you know most of the names and words used from the translated novel) <<less

What I would seek from a protagonist coming from this story.
    • Cold blooded
    • Apathethic
    • Actually antihero
    • Calculative
    • Always on guard
    • Not braindead
Now here are the reasons as to why I rated this 3 stars,

Lack of realism

If I or you were to replace our protagonist, would we have done the same?, would be have the same thoughts, reactions ?

That's one of the reasons why I had disliked the protagonist, If I were to be born just to be needlessly unlucky due to a dumb god.. (One of the reasons aswell) then I'd rather die a hundred deaths than surrender and keep my morals in one of my lives.

Power creeps.

I thought this had alot of potential due to him having over alot of experiences with magic but NO, power surge here, power surge there, plus with the vampire thing, multiple additions with the abilities of the protagonist could have naturally been added, wings, night vision, morphing, yet they all tie to due to his "Comically large mana pool"

, Absolutely Ridiculous.

Other than the multiple reincarnation jumble, this would have fit right into the category of typical Isekai.

Lots of people who rated contradict themselves too. But this is my preference, Bloody, gorey, filled with endless suffering, coupled with retribution and practice of realism.

Antihero is when theres a hero, or a character seen as a person worthy of respect from the masses, but they make it so for some reason sh*t ton of people he fights are considered chaotic evil, yeesh, antihero?..

No tension btw since the plot armor is too thick, other than you raging at the manga, contemplating whether you want to beat the divine living sh*t out of the god, that will be the only considered action so, yeah. Peace

Awesome, action packed, multi layered story. Lends itself very well to binge reading (if one skims over the lengthy status panels of characters that get quite extensive as the story progresses).

Most criticisms one could mention would be very nitpicky, one of those peeves would probably be all the abilities that many characters acquire that are scarcely or never used (kind of like gimmick abilities in videogames that get introduced in one tutorial just to get utterly forgotten later).

I can not understand any of the complaints about the revenge aspect falling... more>> by the wayside. In fact, MC seems very pragmatic about his actions and pursues revenge where possible and feasible, and avoids needless sacrifices and clashes where he has the disadvantage tactically. If the story was about a revenge-crazed maniac, it would probably have ended after he confronted the guy who
Spoiler

killed his mom.

[collapse]

When he has the opportunity to do so he usually takes excessive revenge, ensuring that those who crossed him never get the chance to do so again, and he tries to convince those who have the potential to become enemies to leave him alone, out of the practical consideration to not get overwhelmed by enemies. Which is absolutely plausible considering how many main factions were already hostile to him from the day of his birth!

So yeah, the complainers who write about how MC 'abandoned revenge' or went 'soft' probably want a story that is even more surreal and nonsensical than the average japanese cheat-reincarnation-harem-isekai.

Spoiler

also I got to the point where MC is 10yo and he still didn't lay pipe despite being pestered and surrounded by h**ny women/undead/dragons/squids and all other sorts of species who may or may not have orifices, so at least age of consent seems to be respected so far

This is seriously good and I enjoyed my time reading it. Some may say the MC had gone soft in the later chapters but the truth is just his mother stopped him and he himself doesn't want to inflict unnecessary suffering to people who aren't a target for his revenge. The world-building is also superb and side characters are getting more attention than your typical iskeai novel.

This novel has many of the shortcomings light novels tend to always have. The author rambles on about unimportant things too often; the text is extremely bloated.

I get that the MC had tough previous lifes, but bringing it up every single chapter is just annoying. It's so overdone that I just start skipping entire sections when I see the pity party start to happen. At this point it's just cringy.

Just like every other isekai/reincarnation novel, Japanese food comes up every other chapter, and it ends up just being food p*rn... more>> and about how much everyone looooves it. Which is s*upid and naive. In reality when you try to introduce foods that people have never seen before, not many will actually end up liking it.

Most cringy of all are the frequent sections where we hear all about how amazing MC is as everyone gets in a circle and jerks it off to their new god, the 3 year old child. <<less

A very good story. The world building is good, the translation is excellent (and gets better as you read further). The characters are decent at minimum, with understandable motives. It's a revenge story but not super dark and sadistic, and the MC doesn't involve unrelated people. His revenge isn't all about vengeance (though that is certainly a big part), but that he will remove those that take from him so as to reduce the chance that they will again to 0. All-in-all a good story that uses the base reincarnated-into-another-world,... more>> and uses it very well. <<less

This is one of those stories where the author assumes the readers are children with Alzheimer's disease (a pretty small group). Somebody speaks one sentence with trivial content. Then there is a full page explaining that trivial content. Then somebody else says something, another page of extremely ban*l explanations and thoughts. A fight scene in bullet time - every tenth second is interrupted by pages of completely useless thoughts and "explanations" of stuff that does not need any explaining.

I don't mind long stories with lots of stuff that don't directly... more>> drive a/the main story, not at all, in fact I quite enjoy it. However, 80% of what this writer writes can be completely ignored and you are still reading exactly the same story and you don't miss anything at all.

It is a shame really, because this _could_ be something pretty nice. Although I found the start and justification a little too made up, trying too hard to get readers to feel something. Since the start can be easily skipped though - if you read the few paragraphs of summary you know enough, none of the details of the start are of importance later - this would not be much criticism. The really bad part really is all the really s*upid and useless explanations when instead the story should just go on. It's like watching commercials every minute of a movie. Or it's like a never ending tutorial mode in an RPG where you are forced to read every single explanation, like many long pages about what goblins are and how they look like etc. Etc. Even though pretty much anyone who has ever had any contact with this genre knows that already. <<less

Spoiler

I did find it slightly disappointing that MC chooses to passively take revenge every now n then but I agree with some of it after such as, his vengeance against the town that mu*dered his mother by not killing any of them but takes away their sense of safety, food, security, fertile soil, and the Lord's own mansion away leaving them basically nothing, although he leaves his vengeance for his former classmates behind after begining his 3rd life, even though they killed him in his 2nd, I sorta got used to it as they torture themselves over fear of encountering him even though he doesn't care the least bit about them except for the few who'll choose to fight him or side with him otherwise he has zero interest in them for example, he finds dust to be more interesting than them, while they believe he still wants revenge. His lovers are all solely interested in him too except for Bilde as she wanted to have a single child before being Van partly because of his age at the time and for wanting to retain her youthful appearance for him later on when he had matured sexually.

Prediction:

He will become the Great God of Death & Resurrection by the end of the story or towards it, in my opinion since he's resurrected his mother and rules over the Death attribute, as for the "Great God" cuz 4-5 of Lambda's great gods like him n he even surprises them such as when he speaks to Vida telepathically as she tries to send him a divine message and she "eeks" in surprise (xD) plus he has tons of friends, followers, and lovers already while being only 11 years old currently not to mention gods of other world's like him and desire to help him partly because of his passive abilities affecting them sorta.

This is in my opinion the best Japanese Webnovels out.

It has everything. Good Characters, good plot, interesting villains and the most important thing, it doesn't get boring. Really, even if it looks like the MC or some other character is doing nothing, you don't get bored. Some people say it has gone astray from its original start and developed into just another Harem-Story wher the MC wants a happy life. And there is some truth to it, but the story and other characters don't allow that. That is another reason... more>> why I love this Novel. The circumstances don't allow for an easy life but the MC wants an easy life! He is doing everything to achieve his goal, even if he has to do the impossible.

What I want to say is, that I haven't expected to stumble on such a good read. (What do you expect when you read such a title?) So when you have read this far into my comment you better start reading. <<less

Amazing novel. This novel is dark and yet very positive. The protagonist is great in his own way, and you get to love him increasingly more as the story develops. The world itself is vast, and you explore it long with the protagonist, discovering new places and characters along the way. The protagonist is not simply OP from the beginning, but he utilizes the "lack of abilities" that he is given to become stronger. The side characters are all very interesting, and the author does not waste any time on... more>> redundant backstories.

Before reading this, I was really hesitant, but by volume 2 I simply fell in love with this novel. Please ignore the negative reviews, and give it a try. I assume that this novel is not for everyone due to its darker undertones, but I promise that if you give it a try, you will not regret it!

All in all: If you like character growth and dark fantasy, you will love this novel. <<less
