This novel was quite interesting for the first 300 to 400 chapters. It was a solid 4.75 till that. After that it goes downhill and pretty fast at that. After struggling and forcing myself to read till 1100+ I finally gave up and just read up spoilers. And by God that was a great decision, just one small regret, I should have saved myself a mountain load of time and read them spoilers earlier... sigh..

After balancing the interesting parts and the useless fillers that comes in the guise of... more>> comedy (mind you the comedy was great in the beginning, but after reusing the same comedy for the umpteenth time, it became stale), my final rating is 2. No wonder the author was rushing to finish the novel asap. <<less

It's decent. Good enough to be in the top 50 currently translated novels, but ultimately fails to be more than just "better than the rest", for reasons many have previously pointed out.

Spoiler

I wonder, once the translation goes into the r**e scenes, how many people here will backtrack on their praise and start hating on this novel instead. I quite look forward to this.

Up to the 4th book it was really funny and unique. The plot was unpredictable and full of suspense and also very funny at the same time, but after the 4th book the quality of it went downhill really quickly from one of the best books on NU to a low quality xianxia with a predictable plot. And according to those who read it completely, it apparently gets even more worse later on with a very half-assed ending.

Spoiler

1) The 2nd girl in his harem, Du lingfei suddenly turned from a regular member of the sect to having one of the best backgrounds around. She is the daughter of The Celestial, who's the leader of the heavenspan region and stronger than Demigods and she was sent to a sect that only has one nascent soul elder as a spy. How is it believable that the big boss has to send his own daughter to this sect and she also "coincidentally" falls for the mc? Also note that she ''coincidentally" had no guards to protect her when she fell in mortal danger during the mission that Bai saved her. The enemy only had a single foundation stage elder while her father has Demigods as subordinates.

2) The MC has too much luck. At first there was some suspense but later on you already know that no matter what sort of treasure is mentioned the MC will have it fall on his lap. (Especially with the Deva Souls)

3) The top 100 foundation stage cultivators of Sky Polarity Sect (Bai Xiaochun was forced to join the sect and managed to make it to the top ten) are sent to the border with the Wildlands (Enemies of the Heavenspan region). They are shown no respect by ordinary soldiers of the border guard of the sect even though they are the top chosen of the sect.

4) Another of Bai's girls, Chen Manyao was also the same as Du Lingfei. She was sent to Bai's original sect as a spy even though she's the disciple of the big boss of the Wildlands and she falls for the MC for no reason.

5) The way of gaining Nascent soul cultivation from Gold Core really is completely ridiculous. How is it possible that you need 5 souls of Devas to upgrade from Gold Core to Nascent Soul? (Devas are above Nascent Soul) It seems completely unbelievable and would make more sense if they needed Nascent Souls instead.

Like the others I found the novel quite funny. The MC never believes what he does is good enough even while doing ground shaking results. He's cunning and greedy and he'd do anything to live longer but he doesn't like to fight. I love how he wants to show off but is too afraid to do it. I don't like people comparing him to LLS though, LLS' MC is a dick, an excuse of a human being but this one only stole a few chicken and find a cunning way... more>> to win money. He could at worse be called a scoundrel. He's not a pe*vert, he's not a sad*st nor cruel. <<less

Yessssss! The new translations have finally caught up to the old ones. OMG I waited for so long.

This novel is definitely an underdog story where the MC manages to exceed and surpass all expectations to become one of the greatest cultivators between all sects. Though this theme is overused and overpromoted, reading it is always so satisfying! Especially when it's done in such a comical way. The main character's ability to create hijinks and disastrous unintended consequences is, dare I say, a gift. Yet he's always prevailed. I've encountered very... more>> few genuinely laugh-out-loud novels on NU (one I can recommend is My Disciple Died Yet Again), this one has made me roar with laughter over and over again.

Give it a chance especially now that we're finally moving along with new updates! <<less

The novel is pretty good. MC is a shameless and cunning individual. He's afraid of death (much like little Fatty Zhou from HJC) and wants to live forever by cultivating to become an Immortal. It's quite an hilarious and exciting read. Being Er Gen's work, it's pretty well written. Although not much character development has happened. But there is something. This is only the beginning after all. (Chapter 20 as of this review)

I have to say, that so far, this has been a wonderful read. The story has a good mix of action, comedy and drama, which is rarely seen in LN's. And as far as the MC goes, although he can be quite cowardly most of the times, I find him to be quite a character. In my opinion, he's character is really quite fleshed out and interestingly likeable. In the first 100 chapters of the story, I have found myself cracking up a bunch of times, as well as facepalming... more>> myself as well as how shameless he could be; but in contrast to that, I've also found myself teary-eyed at times, as well as applauding loudly at some of his actions.

So as of chapter 104. I have to give this a 5/5. Another classic from Er Gen. <<less

One of the most OVERRATED novels I've ever encountered so far. It tries so hard to be funny, but most of the time becomes abnormally s*upid instead.

Plot holes all over the place, World building is almost non-existent, Character building is abysmal as this MC is one of the most idiotic MC to ever exist in this genre in my opinion.

I don't get why this novel has such a high rating at all. Easily the worst novel this author has written so thus far.

Gets one chuckling within but a few chapters. The protagonist is absolutely hilarious. All his antics, the sheer shamelessness, and the mind behind it all is Just astonishingly refreshing. Why? For one, let's start with the main motivator of the story. Death. Yes, that's it death! Everyone fears the great unknown that comes afterwards, and excruciating pain it involves. If given an opportunity, who wouldn't wish to prolong it all? Or better yet avoid it completely. That's what our protagonist thinks, and so he cultivates the 'Heaven's Dao'.

Our thanatophobic protagonist... more>> skirts around the traditional realm of those simply craving power, and those concerned with prestige. He shows the world, how in a war, it is a coward that wins in the end. Being a winner is kind of subjective. In this case, what could possibly represent greater victory than survival?

With such great premise could this story possibly ever go wrong. Yet, why only three (3) stars? Sadly, the astonishingly built premise is ruined by the sporadic periods of lunacy that inflict the protagonist. Suddenly, our lovely protagonist is reborn under the ashes of heroism. Akin to a phoenix experiencing nirvana. Death no longer seems so fearsome anymore, and instead he begins to behave like a typical xianxia protagonist would. Full of self-righteousness, and egotistic confidence.

The humour and its all encompassing reality dies because of these forced acts of heroism. What's left in its place is Just an imitator, a pale shadow of what it used to be. <<less

Finished this novel 2 years ago so I don't remember the names clearly, i'll just point out some things I liked and disliked:

-Useless "special" breakthroughs (You got a gold core? Mine is ranbow! It does nothing, b-but I'm the MC so I have to be unique! Also helps pad the word count)

-Character development? What is that?

... more>> -Destiny child complex, legacies and treasures fly into his pockets

-The author struggles to give the MC a reason to be stronger, and when he gives him one the following plot becomes very predictable (seriously, Er Gen couldn't write a novel where a love interest doesn't get killed, tortured, kidnapped or sacrificed even if his life depended on it)

-Aphrodisiac pill usage (rare but still shit)

-MC blindly chasing after certain goals and upon reaching them he completely forgets next chapter

-The flame upgrade concept was nice, got tedious later on but still

-Disappointing rushed ending (literal faceslap to the reader)

-Randomly killing characters offscreen trying to impress the reader

-The comedy was pretty nice at the start, repetitive later on

-Ghost girl best girl (even though the method she used to get her body was extremely questionable)

-Interesting plot twist (THAT one)

Overall a cute little novel to waste your time on if you don't have anything else to read, but nowhere near the "masterpiece" level some Er Gen fanboys say it is. <<less

Remember how Meng Hao explained the life of a snow flake, or how Wang Lin lived as a mortal? Yeah there's nothing like that here. As generic as it gets with a plenty of plot holes to boot. Inheritances and techniques? The MC gets too many to count just for the sake of making him appear awesome, half of them of course are used once never to be seen again.

I like that he has some companions but that isn't really consistent either as Er Gen seems to separate them for... more>> ridiculous reasons and only brings them together for the sake of comedy. The novel seems very rushed without too much thought put into it. The overarching plot and world building is great as expected but so far could be condensed to 50 chapters.

Er Gen's stories seem to be getting more lighthearted by the novel, maybe his next novel will be a full blown comedy.

So far Xian Ni seems to remain Er Gen's best novel, maybe he has more constraints to be working under now or maybe that story was something he really wanted to tell. <<less

Like most Chinese novels I've read, the endings are disappointing. The ending made me sigh with disappointment, I shrugged my shoulders and closed the Chrome tab.

The were some dark moment but the author does a good job of making it more light and funny. I'd say this novel is an extreme 4.0/5.

Near the ending and the ending, it didn't feel like I was reading that same Bai Xiaochun that couldn't light an incense stick on MT. hood. It felt like the author was sitting on a hot stove with his... more>> ass burning, trying to find some way to end the story but I guess that's to be expected from a web novel. But I do like the rest of the story, except some parts that felt like out of character for the MC with him taking unnecessary risks and the author saying that the MC weighed the losses and gains but in fact the author only wanted to advance the plot in that direction forcefully. For example:

Spoiler

The Heavenspan Leader of all the sects was injured in a fight against the Gravekeeper and ended up fleeing to his base (Heavenspan island) to recover and suddenly there is news that spreads across the world, that the Heavenspan leader is looking for a disciple and all nascent soul cultivators regardless of background are invited to take a trial but at this time the MC already achieved the Deva stage so he ends up becoming the leader of this mission to take nascent souls cultivators of the eastern region to Heavenspan island. The top 5 getting a 1000 years vitality pill, the rest of the top 10 getting 500 years vitality pill, the rest of the top 100 getting 100 years vitality pill and the top nascent soul becoming a disciple of the Heavenspan leader. The author says that the MC weighed 'losses and gains' and decided to go and even let his friends come along, when the true losses and gains would be:

losses:

  • MC gets soul and body refined so that the Heavenspan leader may recover
  • MC's friends' soul and body get refined so that Heavenspan leader can recover
  • MC gets killed by Heavenspan leader for achieving heaven dao Deva
  • MC gets killed by Heavenspan leader for being related to Gravekeeper
  • MC gets captured and used by Heavenspan leader in a plot against Gravekeeper
  • MC's friends get used against him by Heavenspan leader

Gains:

  • MC's friends gain 1000 year old pill
  • One of MC's friends win the competition and becomes Heavenspan's disciple

Although in the end nothing happened other than MC's friends being taken from him by another person called 'Ghost Mother' and the whole trial being false and the MC returning without gaining anything grumbling about getting stronger. This felt out of character for the MC since he always thought deeper and even refused when real benefits were in-front of him until the author pushed him in that direction but never has he taken a risk like that Heavenspan island trip since he would powerless against anyone there. I don't understand why he would go to the home of a recently injured person for benefits when that person themselves is suffering from their injuries, of course that person would be seeking relief or some other dark plans. This type of risks happen a few more times after that in the story...

Started as a good novel, and quickly became a generic one after book 3.

The author just made poor plot choices and turned the reading experience into a chore. At some point, it had so many plot holes, that in a single chapter you could find more than one, and with that, the biggest problem is that these plot holes were the main foundation moving the plot forward. Not the MC, not side characters, but inconsistent plot logic. Also, the author used the "MC is too dumb to see what's comming"... more>> narrative logic way too often, that made the MC a complet nonfactor to the plot for almost 50 chapters.

TL; DR:there's no chinese novel that can't be destroyed by its author. <<less

Fak yas. This shizzle some gud shit.

I didn't actually like ISSTH (dropped at around 200) or Renegade Immortal (dropped at around 400-500) but I like this. Its funny, but not repeated. It has serious moments when our MC actually shows off his powers, but he only does that when he gets angered. And baby Bai doesn't get angry much, much at all tbh.

It also shows off an OP MC, only we as the audience don't think hes that OP. This is due to a critical reason that I hope... more>> every author will one day follow: the fact that the supporting cast aren't there to drool over his d*ck when he shows of his power. They keep character, as a real life person would (hopefully).

Anyway read it, you will enjoy the first 100 chapters if nothing else. That is worth it when the rest of novels are generic sh*t which is somehow further worsened due to the continuous inconsistencies. <<less

This novel seems to have some original ideas like MC who is afraid to die and cultivates because he wants to live forever, MC who is afraid to the point where he avoids any conflict/battle (at least it's the first time I read something like this). The world currently contains only humans and beasts (intelligent beasts too, but not beast race, so far).

There are quite few funny scenes so comedy is not bad (+1). MC is also alchemist and other types of professions like equipment forging, talisman forging etc are... more>> not introduced (even though there are weapons and talismans in use).

The things I don't like so far:

    • MC doesn't like to battle so he doesn't train battle techniques, but wins every fight. He trains a body cultivation technique in the same way as he trains his Qi with addition to some chicken meat at the start - doesn't make much sense. Basically there is no logic that he can fight the way he fights since he never accumulated any battle experience.
    • Cultivation is very weird. The path to upper levels seems to depend on some scarce and unique resources and some cultivation techniques described so far are also a little bit s*upid.
    • Scenes with animals are maybe the worst of all, from r*pe to the fact that MC's pet chases after human ladies
    • Some scenes what MC accomplished when practicing alchemy while in Qi refining stage are simply absurd (especially with the monkey)
    • The body refining technique that MC cultivates is described as immensely difficult to cultivate (and that's why he was the only one who cultivates it) but later when you read chapters you notice that the way MC cultivated this technique is normal, nothing difficult and there was no reason why some others would not succeed. Actually there is a lack of description how this "difficult" technique is cultivated at later stages because MC just succeeds by doing nothing additional then his standard cultivation practice (qi circulation, pils etc)

I'll be honest. I'm just a lowly novel fanatic that needs to read in order to live. I've passed this several times and honestly the title and intro sounded so serious that it already bored me. But I don't have any choices left so why not try? I thought as I grudgingly downloaded the epub but guess what. ARGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!! I REGRET IT!! WHY DID I NOT READ IT THE FIRST TIME I LAID MY EYES ON IT!!!!! MY PRECIOUS TIME WASTED ON INFERIOR BOOKS WHILE THIS WAS HERE ALL ALONG!!!... more>> DESTINED BOOK! I NEVER GOT TIRED READING THIS! The protagonist is extremely entertaining and I love how the author doesn't try to make him too smart or evil or purest kindest~! Ugh! Deym I'm really happy I took the courage to read this, thinking it was some drama type all while it's full of witty and fun stuff. <<less

Spoiler Warning!!!

Spoiler

I had a bad feeling from the first chapter of how the village was glad with Bai Xiaochun leaving. But now I understand...I have decided to drop this novel simply because the MC acts like the shitty antagonists of other novels: one who is strong but is s*upid and insanely afraid of death once confronted with someone stronger than him. I had some hope when he fought against the Luochen Clan but that was the peak of the novel for me (from what I've read). That was the only time where he showed some actual heroism and bravery. After that arc, the novel just took a complete nosedive for me. The comedy does not offset that tragedy that is the MC and only adds to his annoyance.

Anyone wanted to try reading this be warned: The MC is extremely narcissistic, accident prone, and generally weak-willed. Just someone, who if you interacted with, you would want to to beat the sh*t out of.

It was funny in beginning but got repetitive and boring. MC's main goal is to live as long as possible although it is naive, childish of him to expect everyone to harmoniously practice in cultivation. He might not understand it first time but why does he always think no one should kill him and everyone is bad for trying to kill him.

MC should grow spine really I mean he's always afraid and nervous.i get that author is trying to flesh out a unique character but even that has limits and... more>> character should atleast have some common sense. Who would shout out to his attacker to calm down when the guy is trying to kill you it's really s*upid. Author will repeatedly mention how afraid he is, how nervous he is and how his heart is pounding Man it gets so irritating. That sort of mentality will never survive in cultivation world but author somehow makes him op and he lives. Even when he becomes stronger he's always afraid and repetitive dialogues gets me irritating. I find his character really disgusting now. Although the story is good so far mc's character is a huge letdown <<less
