Honestly this novel has 4 main problems

  1. MC is given constant deus ex machina to resolve his problems (memory pills which enable him to "copy" from our world to the alternate one where he now resides or given various "skill books" which give him skill based upon name like caligraphy skill book).
  2. MC doesnt go through character development - in the beginning he both accidentally and on puprpose got into trouble. Few times in story it´s actually justified. However later he attacks Korean singer just because a bodyguard accidentaly pushed away a female fan.
  3. World building is very poor. Most of time we don´t have any clue what TV shows/popular music/books are we only get explanation that they have inferior books/poems. We don´t see any positive difference between alternate world and our world.
  4. Other characters aren´t very defined. MC´s father is given 10 lines in entire novel (no he doesn´t die). MC´s mother just boast about her son, MC´s former coworker/costudent I got no clue what she´s doing after going to TV station where MC reccomended her.

Chinese supermacy propaganda is strong with this one. I wouldn't say racist.... lets use the euphemism instead, and go with 'extreme nationalist'.

This is an absolute rinse-repeat fiesta of pretentious writing, a prime example of what a novel should not be. You find better writing in -insert generic example of terrible writing-. If you're read one or two arcs of this novel, you've read them all more or less.

The MC is a terrible human being, the author is an extremely racist Chinese 'communist nationalist'.

Don't waste your time, read something else.

I fell in love with this novel! It might sound so impossible but I have read it the second time around from chapter 1 to the current chapter that was translated. I like how thick-skinned the protagonist is. I laugh so much in every chapter. The only thing that I could probably complain about is how slow the romance in it. It is focused more on the protagonist's achievements and adventures which is great but the romance is completely gone in some chapters. The author is not giving the love... more>> interest even a time to deliver her character in the novel because of so low appearance in the novel. There are also many things that are happening that the previous chapter's topic will be gone in the next chapter.

But still, it is my recommemded novel that will definitely make you read each chapter without skipping even if it is in some thousand of chapters. <<less

I would recommend to read this when nothing else is there to read and you are hella bored, MC is completely and utterly Unprofessional arguing with everyone and what type of celeb just wants to get famous without earning the money majority of the novel this dude at home with his parents at the start I was like okay interesting but after I realized he just consistently got into argument especially with his employers and his peers plus his GF always bailing him out I was done with this novel... more>> right then and there. <<less

The main character is nicknamed in-story as Face-Smacking Zhang, this is entirely accurate.

Zhang Ye is not a character that would have risen to prominence in the general populace, both in real life or in story. He is too blunt, petty, vindictive, and lokes to boast.

Interestingly, the story acknowledges these flaws (even in the first chapter), and the main character does occassionally acknowledge that without the ring and plagiarizing the 'giants' of his past world, he would have not even break into the public's eye.

Story-wise, Zhang Ye gains the tools to... more>> convey the messages he want, but unfortunately, the goal that he has is to become famous, the end.

Pretty shallow, I know. Though Zhang Ye does have his good points, they can be buried under his unpleasantness and rudeness.

Still, his face-smacking antics are pretty interesting to read.

I would note that the plagiarized stuff getting recognition is a bit show than tell, because art is inherently subjective, so they tend to be hit and miss to the readers who won't be getting the same game effects (Poetry delivery, no script live broadcast, Voice Charm, etc.) as Zhang Ye's audience.

So, those with imagination might be able to vizualise such scenes, and gets tickled pink at the artistic face smacking, but those who don't only see Zhang Ye talking big.

The dependence on plagiarized materials hurts the story's final score.

EDIT: I should note that the author might just be sharing the things he likes... Whether poetry or songs or even math theorems. Heh. <<less

I used to really like this novel as it has a lot of interesting points about various topics (history, music and poetry). It was really satisfying to see him trump over his detractors but I feel like the MC is really annoying and a little too justified in his behaviour, as long as he believes he is in the right, he'll break laws and assault people etc

It's incredibly annoying that he is so egotistic and righteous about face-slapping his detractors when he is essentially taking credit for the work of... more>> others. This feels like plagiarism on a whole other scale. Essentially what he got wasn't so much a fame system as a plagiarism system...

He is a creep too. He essentially mol*sted his landlady and his current relationship with his girlfriend/fiancee is really off-putting to the point I can't really continue reading. She seems to just exist as a point to keep him out of trouble and she doesn't seem to have an opinion of her own at all... and that is her 'good' point according to him.

The novel makes his behaviour seem like he is doing the 'right' thing that everyone else doesn't do because they are afraid of some 'established' power etc. But he is still essentially righteously lashing out at anyone whose moral behaviour he doesn't approve of.

His morally unethical behaviour is just smoothed over or laughed off (it shouldn't be ok to feel up someone in their sleep just because they can stop you while they are conscious) While the mistakes of others are a justification to ruin them.

I mean sure there are plenty of other protagonists that are more ruthless, cruel etc but at least they recognize that in themselves instead of taking the moral high ground and not even acknowledging that they might be wrong. E.g. Reverant Insanity - ridiculously ruthless MC but he doesn't pretend he is in the right.

Honestly if this book had no excessive touchy-feely harem stuff I would have given this novel a 4.9.

That is if you ignore the “I don’t believe he can- he did- what a god- I don’t believe he can do next thing” bashing circles to fill up the word count.

If there was no lusty harem- I would have ignored the word-fillers. So if you don’t mind harem- this is a great story.

Oh some people mention racism... hmmm I don’t think it’s racism, more like the author just wants to make a... more>> point about how “godly” the MC is kind of thing. <<less

People rate IRAS very low but @ArgusYesu has really done well in giving a good reason to rate the story as a 1 star.

He states that the is repeating itself. The MC (Zhang Ye) is just finding an enemy, defeating them, and gaining more popularity. That is..... VERY TRUE!! The author repeats events but just changes the enemy from a athlete to like a poet and he calls the MC's poems low class. Then the little internet trolls (never learn their lesson) go over and side with the enemy. MC... more>> unlocks a new ability then wrecks the enemy.

ITS LITERALLY JUST A REPEAT WITH A FEW FACTS ABOUT SOME TV SHOW OR A BOOK!!

I still like to read it though........ <<less

This series starts off very interesting and entertaining compared to the typical xianxia series seen on Novelupdates. Then slowly the issues that triggerk talked about start taking over and the series starts doing repetitive arcs before really going downhill. By the time the Martial Arts arc hits the series becomes really, really awful and the end of the current arc with 'Clown' ends so badly that I just couldn't read the series anymore. Zhang Ye needs to lose and lose badly before making a comeback, this current arc would have... more>> been perfect for that but the author chickened out.

I don't mind the plagiarism because that is a key concept of the series, what will he bring from our world to his new world that will allow him to win and become a superstar. A big issue I have is that like other xianxia series the power creep becomes a big problem, his lottery power has become so OP that he will never lose and in fact he could become a god with it. It needs to be nerfed in such a way that he loses access to the low rank lottery and the criteria for points would need to be changed to something like existing fans will only produce a quarter of the points and only new fans will give full points. <<less

Definitely no.1 face slapping novel, since that's all the novel is about. Other novel has cooking or stardom or cultivation or artifact crafting as side plot, but this novel is pure face slapping & chasing skirt. Even the skirt chasing scene don't have too much screentime. Not that I complained that the novel lack romance scene, I actually hoped the author would just remove all the "sexy scene" since it was so badly written. It's all about face, ladies and gentlement. Smack all the arrogant antagonist to the ground and... more>> rise to stardom baby ~ ヽ (⌐■_■) ノ♪♬

There's a little bit too much nationalism + racism + bad romance scene, but if you don't mind those this novel is a definitely good read. <<less

I'm Really a Superstar follows a fairly average youth who gets transported to another world (basically) that's extremely similar to our world except everything popular of the previous world is different in some way, with a game ring that gives him plot armor. The story makes for a great power fantasy, but if you're not into that, this story really isn't for you. As far as in genre goes, as in the power fantasy kind of thing goes, its a 4/5 easy, but as far as overall story compared to... more>> other genre's, I'd rate it as probably a 3/5. The reasons are:

Spoiler

Everything that makes ZY popular is something stolen from our earth that they didn't have over on their earth, there are so many industries that are "good in their own way but different" that everything he pulls out that is supposedly "equally good but different" is an instant hit, which gets quite strange after around the 10th time it happens, but its the usual fare for this kind of story.

Good god the filler. I'd say a good 20%+ of the book is "oh ZY is so cool" "that was the best face-slapping ever" "holy sh*t ZY's new work is too good" "how could anyone do this" Which would be fine if it toned itself down a bit. Sometimes there are entire chapters of this and that's especially frustrating when you haven't built up a few chapters to read all at once. Especially towards the later chapters, the story gets very bogged down by this kind of thing, where in a better story, it'd be more streamlined and to the point, but to be fair this is a fairly common thing in chinese stories due to them being paid on the word count. The story, due to this, is much better read after each individual arc is finished, otherwise you'll be getting a lot of bullsh*t filler that will frustrate you to no end.

f*ck, I didn't want to like it but I was forced to like it. Damn you author for being pretty good.

I do not look kindly towards this author's view of plagiarism as portrayed in this story nor their outlook portrayed in the story in regards to s*xual advances, that aside, it is a pretty good story with lots of humor good build up and use of mob mentality. (The Sexually charged scenes are done rather well I must admit, though most of his initiations have been someone what borderline mol*station.... more>> So bad starts on s*xual content, but everything after the start is either charming, erot*c or funny.)

Grammar: 2.3/5

Writing: 4/5

Story: 2.6/5

(Update as of Chapter 1029: It has improved quite a bit. Translation quality is above average, the story is stable, and the plot seems to only be improving as things move along. Overall well done, just sad that I heard the original author was hit by the regulatory agency in China to stop writing for some reason a while back. No clue if things were cleared up.)

(Update as of Chapter 798: Lots more racism... lots... but other than that I love it. It's like Trump when he wasn't President of the U.S., he's cool when he keeps his mouth shut, but then sh*t hits the fan as soon as race is involved.)

(Update as of Chapter 567: I underestimated the power of the "Racism" Tag. It's just too stronk. I'd drop the rating a bit due to that, but honestly, I don't really give a sh*t if someone is racist or not, only if they act on it.)

Grammar use in this series is fairly standard and at times stumbles with a few instances of awkward wording/phrasing (mostly due to difficulties in Chinese-to-English translations). The writing style of the author is solid, using both rapid returns on plot devices and burying long term plot devices that reoccur. The story is about average, use of characters to satisfy the plot is rather standard for Xianxia style bad guy dumps, though they allow for recurring bad guys which is a pleasant touch.

All-in-all, I'm enjoying the series immensely, though I still don't like some aspect, it reeks of satire at the Chinese plagiarism stereotypes seen in modern day times as well as a nod to a patriotism towards its people at the same time. I'm half Korean, but I didn't feel offended in the slightest thanks to this Satirical nature of what I have read thus far. It's baselessly bashing at Koreans, it mostly just self-deprecation of China itself and people as a whole.

A good read once you get past the game elements and rather, dangerously, sexually passive-aggressive MC. <<less

Very satisfying novel to read.

Spoiler

Watching Zhang Ye progress as he comes from nothing to becoming #1 Superstar in China was a bumpy yet enjoyable road.

Things I disliked about the novel:

    • Zhang Ye values friendship maybe a little TOO much, causing him to offend people for little or no reason at all, putting himself in muddy waters for others. While that may be touching for others, I tend to like main characters that only think for himself or his loved ones.
    • Zhang Ye suddenly loses four years of his youth because he's arrested for being a hacker. This caused the novel to sort of back track from the peak of his life and entered a time where he's displayed as an old celebrity that's lost all his fire.
    • Zhang Ye just doesn't value money. He feels the ever-so lack of money yet he makes no attempt at gaining revenue. The 100 Million USD that he gains from the charity auction was also donated to the organization. Zhang Ye seems to never get his hands on any money at all.
    • From Chapter 800-900 onwards, Zhang Ye's popularity points just suddenly stopped being displayed. It was to the point where readers had to guess what stage ZY has reached. Billions? Trillions? Who knows, he's reached the world stage but his point values are no longer apparent.
    • As of Chapter 1617, the author has made no attempt to max out skills that are valuable towards ZY and doesn't make use of his abilities to the fullest. Ex. Since ZY is using singing as a way to gain popularity, why doesn't he make use of his Maxed Luck Halo to try to gain top level singing abilities? Why does he make it so that he reveals his own identity as "2" and causes himself to lose 4 years of his youth?
    • Author causes ZY to abuse the memory search waaayy too much. The whole novel was pretty much based on the very item itself. Memory search capsule, the author basically uses generic songs/novels and various pieces from real life and implements it into the novel. The memory search capsule pretty much encompasses the whole plot of the novel. There's a mention of a piece from real life at least every 3 chapters.
    • At some point later on in the story, I feel as if popularity points lost their worth. It seems as if he never makes full use of what he gains. [Note that he's now on the world rankings and his popularity points should be flowing in wave after wave] It's to the point where I feel as if the author is only mentioning his points whenever he feels like ZY needs a little upgrade. Then again, maybe he's trying to prevent ZY from being too OP, but that's kind of the point of the novel.

Things I loved:

    • The character that reaches out most to me is probably ZY's family: his wife, daughter, father, mother, etc.
    • The growth of ZY as he gains more and more abilities, though I feel as though he limits himself within China due to his nationalistic side
    • The various ways that ZY pisses people off and turns out gaining popularity and fans.
    • His daughters cause she's way too cute, I feel as though she should get a lot more lines than she does and isn't mentioned as much as others such as ZY's crew.

Overall, a great novel that I still follow from day to day. I foresee the novel ending probably 2000+ in? I'd give the novel a 4.999/5 just because of the thrill that I got from it. I found myself laughing a lot more from reading this novel just out of pure humor. The missing 0.001 is from the dissatisfaction that I have from

how ZY could be more OP than he is now.

Watch Zhang Ye conquer the entertainment world plagiarism and lots and lots of face smacking. This series has a lot of problems like randomly doing things that are out of character, its repetitive, it gets slightly racist at some points, too much patriotism at some time, in later chapter's the author just forgot about the system for a while, and I'm still waiting for a martial arts arc. To digress this isn't a series that I would suggests to anyone unless your willing to look past past its problems and... more>> enjoy the comedy. <<less

'I'm really a superstar' (IRAS) has a very slow pace and that's why I was sceptical towards this series. However, the face-smacking Zhang Ye proved me wrong and I fell in love with IRAS. I admit that I didn't like it in the beginning, but it grew on me as the story progressed. This series is great, basically just pure wish fulfilment, childish person get the power to change his life and he takes it (while stopping to step on anyone who offends him on his way up). The people who keep saying "OMG he is so racist" are just bleeding hearts. It's only on the level of jokes and descrimination that most of the world has against Americans, nothing too offensive, it's even funny at times.

The only thing is that even though it's set in modern day China people act like it's... more>> some xanxia/wuxia novel and are either good hearted simple folk or 100% self centred corrupt losers. Not much in between. If China was this overtly corrupt in reality it would have fallen appart years ago, completely unrealistic. <<less

Welp the story follow the partern of a xianxia novel (without immortals though) but happens in an alternate modern world. It's pretty funny but it still has the flaws of a typical xianxia (side-characters = filler characters) but that's still not that much of a problem because it's not that unusual in chinese web novel, but I think is the worst in this novel (though may sayit gives ZY more personality) is his ULTRA-Nationalism, it's so f*cking annoying when the author build an arc around dissing some foreigner (especially Korean,... more>> if you dislike them IRAS is for you) and shouting to everybody how great China is! So I'm going to be honest, there is a lot of racism in this novel but unfortunately many modern Chinese novels will have that so you can't avoid it. But if your able to get past all of that there's a treasure of a read here. It has a lot of comedy and satisfying moments along witch makes it a very fun novel to read. There's a little bit of harassment in the novel but its in the earlier chapters and it hasn't happen in almost 300ish chapters. WHAT A GREAT! GREAT story, especially if you like me... LOVE WORDS... BEAUTIFUL WORDS.

Legge and CKtalon did this masterpiece a superb job, their translation and editing workflow so smooth that you can see the glory of each poem & understand it so much you can't help but feeling awe. I always know that China literature is amazing but since the Chinese language is so hard not many know it's greatness. And the nationalist side of the MC, I guess it will be a put off for some readers.

But read the... more>> book first, you'll fall into it just like me (btw those poems/passages are great to overcome writers' block). If ever they make a drama version of this, only one actor in my mind can cover Zhang Ye's petty but charismatic character---side eyeing Hu Ge hard. <<less
